001it's on now there's green y i to leave as battery's okay on now it's screen all right cool all right I call this meeting to order at 5:35 um thank you everyone for being here first item on our agenda is agenda adjustments does anybody want to move anything around on the agenda all right do we need to approve it the agenda like make a motion no I motion to approve or modify the agenda as presented is the recommended action I move we approve the agenda as recommended I second you can say all those in favor all those in favor I hi all right we're all on the same page that was unanimous so we'll go on to approval of the minutes from last time September 26th does anybody move to approve the minutes before we
002approve the minutes I do want to point out that my my last name is inconsistently misspelled throughout the document I tried and I went back because I mean Elizabeth is kind of no that's okay I just want to make sure before we approve it that we acknowledge it that no that's okay I just want to make sure we acknowledge the spelling Corrections my last name before we approve as presented I have a question um what are we looking through in order to approve like am I just am I looking for CH post like that am I looking for like yeah or if there's anything you remember differently and it was recorded differently in here like oh that's not how that went down you know okay so does anyone else does anyone have any changes to
003the agenda we did no changes I'm sorry to the minutes excuse me the only changes recommended to the minutes is spelling alen parish's last name so was that the only correct one do that how you spell your name okay I am yes the places I'm seeing it yes that is the correct spelling you made me stop and look because it was very commonly misspelled how was it spelled r h i RS H you can also do the motion yourself Brian I move to approve the minutes with the adjustment for Allen's last name I second all in favor hi it's unanimous all right and I'll just say this so everybody knows if you haven't seen me in a board meaning or anywhere else my tone is very unenthusiastic regardless of what we're discussing for the most
004part so please take no don't read into whether I'm annoyed or whatever okay thank you actually that is fair enough usually I chuckle after things so if I'm mad I probably wouldn't do that so the next one is policies on Rules of Order and voting method and we actually have the policies written out so this is a policy that the board has um in general for its meetings um as an actual body governing yourselves you could choose to adopt this or adopt this with amendments or adopt something completely different eventually so it's up to you all does anybody have any comments on the existing rules my thoughts are because F says the Rules of Order may be subject to suspension upon a majority vote if we're in the middle of discussing something and need to
005just set aside those rules for a moment we can always vote to function in a different way for that portion and then continue on with the rules so to me it makes sense everybody else all right my only question is because item a indicates that we will meet at least once a month and I know we haven't talked about the actual calendar so if that's our intention then great but if it's not necessarily Our intention then I don't know that we want to bind ourselves to a policy statement that we are Co we may we already know we may not be specifically doing that's a good point and this is just B right yeah B so then I move that we change the meeting schedule to as her needed with at least one per quarter
006I'm not sure where that is which one is that one sorry a a is the intention to is there a timeline that we need to be cons about so we do have to be done by April yeah there's a community council meeting on April 11th that the propo we would hope that you're taking the proposed recommendations to that community council meeting on April 11th and then make any changes between that date and the following board meeting um and then make the I think the proposed changes at what date in April Hilda I'm sorry it was um for commun Council no for the the May board meeting that we would was May 7 May 7th board meeting so April 11th Community Council final recommendations to the board on May 7th I just don't my only concern
007is I'm not completely confident of the scope of work um so I don't it it would be easier to to make a a choice about that in terms of the a if I had like a firm understanding of that so I don't know I'm not saying yes or no to it I just and my thought is because it says sh if we give ourselves like a bigger no matter I think likely we're probably gonna meet even more than once a month at times right but I feel like because it has a sh we're better off just making it easy for ourself because I'm wondering like December for instance it's a very hard month for us to do something spring break is also a difficult month but if it says quarterly like we will have definitely
008met the shall portion of that and we will likely end up meeting more um because it talks about as often as called could I suggest just changing shall to May that way it kind of leaves it open leaves it flexible and we can set meetings as needed knowing that the scope of work needs to be finished by a certain time period just a suggest I'm fine with whatever wording Chang as we want as long as it doesn't lock us into something that we might not exactly be able to live up to especially if we're taking this the board meeting in May 7th we may not even have necessarily have a May meeting I don't know yeah do we have to include a at all I don't you don't necessarily have to no you could we
009could figure out the me you guys can figure out the meeting things separate from the rules of order for sure if you adopted this excluding subsection and that's on the agenda for tonight too right figuring out our so our meeting schedule is already on the agenda for tonight so let's hold on that one what if we adopt the rules of order as policy B minus section A and just acknowledge that our meeting schedule will be determined separate from our Rules of Order and then that way we're guaranteeing we're not locking ourselves into something that may or may not be actually accomplishable within the scope of the work is that make sense okay I move that we um approve the Rules of Order B through G and take out a i second all in favor I
010and it is unanimous um on a side note does that ever stop feeling awkward no okay I am a terrible timekeeper but I feel really confident about just randomly doing that for us so you guys are doing great it's just weird you'll get the hang of it okay um to that yeah Robert's Rules so the next step is guidelines to address the advisory committee to review policies um right address the advisory committee guidelines to address the advisory committee to review policies I put the emphasis in the wrong place apologize on that one um as of right now our public comments policy is public comments for the meeting will be accepted in written form only all public comments are due to the budget advisory committee no later than 12m on the day of the committee meeting
011members of the public who wish to address the advisory committee submit their WR WR comments via email to Hilda in the subject line of the email please indicate call to the audience and include the topic of the comment and public comments will be read into record by either the committee chair or vice chair is there anything we might want to do a little bit differently on this one I I just want to ask about if we can see them in advance because it says that we could respond which seems different than other board meetings but I'd like to process through what the comment is so um I think you can only respond if there's criticism like made directly to you right yeah so that makes sense um as far as yeah I think getting it
012ahead of time that would obviously be up to Hilda the only other thing I was going to suggest is like if you guys want to be as inclusive as possible you know you could open it up to if people if someone comes here in person and wants to make a public comment I feel like it would be a little awkward to be like sorry you had to have submitted it even though they came here in person to the meeting that's up to you guys I'm not a member of the committee but I'm just putting that out there um because this would limit it like if somebody took the time to come here and then they realize they couldn't comment that would be feel weird do you guys you don't me have like a rule like
013they have to submit that comment within like like 30 minutes prior to the meeting or something like that isn't there uh no well obviously before the agenda item like they can't come in after the agenda of items passed and like come and do a public comment but as long as the agenda item hasn't passed yet okay but with this they couldn't just come here and give a public comment they would have had to submit a written comment and so if they come here to our meeting in person they wouldn't be able to do a public comment according to what's proposed here because it says all public comments will be accepted in written form only before 12:00 yeah before and it'd be like these limitations so if you guys want anything outside of this where somebody
014could come in person and give public comment you'd have to amend these recommendations because these I think Hilda you can correct me um she pulled from an advisory committee that Tucson unified had that's why it says b budget advisory committee so it's okay um but that's so these are suggestions from them so you know these are obviously Up For Debate and change as as you all wish for them to be it's up to you guys yeah that was going to be my comment that I saw the the difference in wording the budget advisory and then they dropped the budget part too so that was GNA be the uh so I mean for me I I I kind of feel the same way that if there's somebody here um I would I I would feel bad
015if they showed up and didn't have an opportunity to speak um I do like the idea that's similar to governing board meetings where if somebody goes and speaks that my understanding is that the board can't comment on those things so rather than address the criticism don't and make that the a part of the uh of the wording saying we can't address but thank you very much for your comments because I know that's a similar practice with a Gover board meeting um and just to clarify like we can in board meetings address criticism that's directly at us it's a fine line though and that's where it like gets weird because it's like essentially they would need to be like naming you individually for you to then respond to it um to like stand up for yourself
016essentially but if they're just vaguely talking about things you can't you know it's up for interpretation obviously but I think the the thing that is wanting to be avoided here is that you're not talking about things that aren't agendized right and so that's basically it we're hearing them out just saying yeah but they don't want us to respond in ways that would be like discussing the substance of what they're addressing just whatever they're saying about you basically yeah because those things can easily derail they become like a de facto member of the committee because they're trying especially if they're upset about something yeah that's true now are these things on a time limit are we like on a schedul time so are we going to limit the amount of comments that come in yeah that's
017up to you everything's up to you guys I'm a little nervous about the idea of limiting the number of comments just because of the policies that we're going to be reviewing um or have been asked to review and some that will'll probably want to add definitely I feel like if we don't have if there are voices out there that want to be heard and we're not hearing them I'm worried we're going to steer in a direction that maybe is not the right one um having said that I also see like like we're trying to limit these to an hour and a half especially because most of the time we have a student or will have a student with us and we don't want him here school to all hourss to be back at school next
018what if we said something like we did time limits so you get two minutes to speak for a total of 20 minutes of public comments because that's 10 people I feel like past 10 we're going to be kind of drowning in their feedback a little bit Yeah and then you could always um if becomes an issue you can always ask to agendize this issue and revisit it although I doubt it will be an issue my understanding is like in Gover board meetings it's up to the board president in terms of limiting time so like if there's one person you the standard is usually five minutes if there's a lot of people they'll cut it down to two minutes or three minutes yeah I like the idea of limiting it to two minutes and a set
019amount of time two minutes in a total set amount of time because if somebody takes less than two minutes yeah get more in to give you guys some perspective I don't want to like keep referring back to this but on the Phoenix Union Safety Committee we always did three minutes and a total of 30 minutes and never did we ever go over that so and that's for Phoenix Union so I'm I'm not anticipating very many things that we discussed coming up against those limits yeah yeah but if you did you could figure it out but so I I also think we want we would want to make sure that we're talking about the procedures behind that in person I think we' probably want to follow the same procedures that the governing board does in terms
020of indicating and desire to to speak to the prior to the committee meeting starting so that we have a sense of like those kinds of procedures I don't know if we want to talk about blue and white cart all that fun stuff stuff but yeah I think it would it'd be easiest for like public comments if it stayed the same as it would on any other every other Tuesday um I like I bet three is probably a lot but that's like a third of the entire meeting so I I I think either three minutes total of 20 minutes or two minutes total of 20 but I think we should stick to about 20 220 I agree so two minutes for a total of 20 minutes um we are accepting public comments motion I'm starting to
021write it down because I'm trying to figure out this isn't an action item just giving direction okay you know so um so it'll just be fixed for the next one two minutes but this is not a motion okay okay okay so you so we are saying people can come in to the meeting to do public comments because we didn't officially say that right but we're all okay with people coming in we're g to follow the board meeting there was one other one so do we want to ask for them in advance or do you guys want to just kind of I can't imagine it being like a ton but in terms of if they if somebody does send any in at 12 she could send them to us at like how does that work for
022you just to get the comments to everybody before well if they get emailed if they get emailed I mean I mean as you guys all know guys email me and I'm immediately email you guys back you know computer all day long um so unless I'm in a meeting I can usually you know forward them to you guys um do you forward them for the board like Bo doesn't get them in advance then there's probably no reason they don't they don't get them in advance so you know just because mostly public comments mostly public comments are stuff that you really can't talk about on the agenda for the regular board meeting you know now obviously for you guys if people are going to submit a public comment it's because it's directly about Pol some policy that
023you guys are talking about I mean they're not going to come and complain to you guys about stuff that they come and complain to the Govern you know so um so it's a little it'll be a little different okay you know in that aspect so I would say we can probably go do we want to ask Hilda to try to forward them to us before the meeting starts I thought she was asking about a deadline though right weren't you I was asking about forwarding them but if I get any emailed ones I will if I can I will forward them to you guys um you know if I happen to you know be unavailable or whatever then and obviously you guys won't get them but um I have a question so the reason I was
024thinking that besides if somebody was going to complain I'd want to know um but like if they're like hey I hear that they can wear biker shorts at this school and when you're doing the dress code policy I want to make sure you know if like he and I were to get that because we're with the APS and the principles could we then like gather that information in advance or is that considered like us doing this work outside of the right spots well I mean you can go in I mean if it's two of you guys well how many did we say with a quum oh even we if if we did it separate if I went and talked to everybody was like came and talked about it here then you were fine okay you
025know so you guys can definitely go research it on your own and then come back and discuss it here which is where you're supposed to discuss things okay I would like Dan because if I can come informed I want to so the idea is as Hilda is able to she can she'll let us know what public comments she's received via email I think it's going to be important for us to keep the ability for people to make public comments through email because let's be honest coming and sitting in the room with all of us sitting around a table is not most people's idea of a fun evening um so we're nice people they do have to stand right here though oh my gosh so and then we talked about two minutes max 20 minutes total
026um and [Music] then anything else that I'm missing just to make sure oh I guess what Allan said that we'll follow the blue yellow card system whatever system they use for public comments we would we're going to follow and you know what I'll probably just come up with some other little card because the blue and white ones are specific for the governing board okay you know so I'll probably just have them you know fill out a little paper that says their name so that we you know Bri call them up whatever is easiest for you and also not confusing like not a totally new system for everybody else I think that's kind of what we were getting at yeah I think so but if somebody comes in for public comments obviously they're going to come
027looking for somebody to let them know so you know we'll give them something to allow just their name so that way they can be called up okay is there anything else on this discussion item that we want to talk about and we want to remove budget advisary commit budget so all right moving on to the next agenda item discuss discussion on policies j i j i a r jicf jih JK JK d a and JK e and finalize procedure in reviewing policies sorry did we skip over the voting method she said it wasn't an action item it was a dire so we didn't have thank you sry um I guess I could just address um a few things here so um at the last board meeting I asked for some feedback um about measurable like
028objectives for the committee right um You can correct me if I'm wrong it sounds like you're still Mr Diaz you're still a little bit um hazy on that even though you were at the board meeting so I hope I have good enough information for us today what what I took from what my colleague said was our focus is on these specific policies however right we can cross reference other policies that might be cross referenced and the objective would be to be able to review every single one of these policies and um bring them into um not compliance I don't know what other word to use but bring them to be consistent um with the uh like I would don't want to say strategic plan but like you know get basically the goals and objectives of
029the district as adopted through the Strategic plan and to be more in line with the actual practical things that are being implemented in the district right now as far as restorative practices and that sort of thing so basically bringing these policies to match what's actually happening in the district and the vision of the district while at the same time still having to comply with state law and so that that will be like a little puzzle thing to put together for each one obviously and then um it sounded like I know you know we had talked discussed Sophia's kind of suggestions as a starting point or as something to reference um and I know for this meeting in particular particular she had originally crossed out this entire policy um I don't know if that's feasible we
030can have that conversation in just a minute but we did discuss um potentially having you know creating a policy that would precede these things that would be like a set of District Norms or District cultural norms that like everybody like agreements basically um that would go hand inand with these policies and whatever staff conduct policies there are as well so like everybody body's on the same page culturally speaking um I hope that makes sense and I hope that's good enough um does anyone still have any questions so what I hear you saying is that we're going to take the recommendations from Sophia what we have currently the mission and vision of the district and then like current practices and we're basically like cross eliminating crosswalking until we have one very coherent um thing or policy
031and the possibility of creating almost like um a code of not honor like a code of conduct that would be like laying out more of the restorative practices intentions but they'd probably be two different things I think that makes the most sense thank you for putting that more eloquently um the other thing I I would suggest but again this is up to you because this comes down to the procedures and how you guys end up doing this um you know we have the community council that we're going to get to at the end point but if there is you know you can be creative and if there's a way that you want to elicit feedback as we go and there's some way to do that whether that be through um you know survey or like
032um going to a PTA meeting or something like that if there's any of that I just want to keep your minds open to like getting feedback during the process before the community council meeting if there's any issues that you feel like you want more voices on because we do only have one parent on this committee but she also hasn't come to the last meeting or this one and so I definitely and there's only one student on this committee so I feel like there's some voices that we probably need to engage especially if attendance isn't working out you know in the long run for some of those voices so I'm just putting that out there because I would hate for us to get to community council and be way off from what like families parents and
033kids are thinking and then we're like and then you guys are like well crap we only have like two weeks to figure this out so just putting that out there um obviously just to remind everybody and I know um you weren't here last time but I'm just like a me and Jay serve as ex officio members of this committee so I don't vote on anything um I just kind of give you guys commentary or suggestions but I can't do anything in this committee so everything's up to you all you J yes even though because I'm on the board yeah so yeah so it would be weird for me to vote on these things and then vote on them again so can you uh can you describe uh how the role of this committee compliments or
034influences or fits in with uh other committees in the district because my understanding is there's two two other committees that are somehow or another centered I a set of slides that I could share because I had I I did this to explain to one of those committees um that would be good to know because I'll say this right um the board doesn't have like a list of standing District committees if they're created by the superintendent then we have no idea about them unless they're presenting about them at the board meeting right because we aren't privy to things that aren't provided to us by the superintendent or by the district uh unless so what the unknown unknowns we can't request right so I don't know what committees exist at the district level because I don't just
035get a standing list of those um I do know that there are district committees because I hear about them every now and then like oh this committee for this but usually it's because there's a presentation but other than that I don't know what exists so it' be great to know and I'm glad you have that information because I'm sure that would have maybe also informed some of the thinking behind this but I didn't you know know about it so and then let me just go grab one of these things too we have it I me I'm sure you guys are like totally this but when I was saying that this is kind of what I was referring to as far as like the beliefs and you know the vision is going is concerned on these
036things that's our current vision and beliefs right yes yes yeah I I think it for me anyway especially since we're not so not I think it would be important so we're not Reinventing the wheel or if there's something else that that is taking place that it's not that excuse me that it is in alignment or that one committee supersedes another I I mean because there's there's Dynamics there right and I don't know with this committee like if we make a decision I can answer that sorry yeah if we make a decision in this committee and it somehow affects the work in one of the other two committees that could create confusion yeah so any decisions that are made in this committee will then be proposed to the board at that May 7th meeting the board
037then has the decision we would then the five of us have the decision do we adopt these recommendations like C Blanc do we make our own changes to them are we we're goingon to have first reads on the policy changes and then the second read and then we're going to adopt whatever it is we're adopting um any superintendent committee at the district level has does not have the power to change these policies the board has the power to amend those policies no District official has the power to amend these policies only the board so it's more likely that our work will sued supersede their work yes and it would guide their work if they were to continue it any superintendent committee is mainly enforcing these policies as written they can't change them at all and
038so once these policies are changed then obviously the work of any committees that are impacted by those would change as well gotta and one of the things is um Allan and I believe Adriana are both members of one of those committees correct I think I actually am on two of them got confused on titles um and are those committees because I didn't know they existed so if it's appropriate for me to go ahead and share these slides and yeah maybe just I don't know who can pick you up so if you can move the microwave mic microphone do you want does that they can see I mean my my air parrot's working guess I'm gonna Apple play it up here that's that's my only concern at this point can you turn on the TV it
039does say we're going to be finalizing the procedures on reviewing the policies yeah that's why I also brought up the feedback thing because it could be part of how you review the policies so I'm thinking like this is going to be like it could be all the things that you consider before you make recommendations is what I interpret it to be procedures but that was not can you say that one more time what you interpreting the agenda item says we'll be finalizing the procedures on reviewing these policies and so in my mind you could say procedures means what you're considering or how you decide what the recommendations will be but whatever you decide tonight would need to be like consistent keep switching it up obviously so like if you're going to consider feedback from the
040community outside of public comment the community council meeting or if you're going to consider Knowledge from these other things or if there's guiding documents or if um are you open to let's say you want to request information from the district are you open to considering information that then gets requested possibly in the future like statistics or data or something like that those are all possibilities as well go ahead what you're going to share is that pertaining to our policies right now because if it's not then you cannot share it because it's not what weos well I'm it's in response to James's question about where does this this work fit into the bigger picture of what's happening in the district related to these policies so I don't know if that's why I was asking I have
041these slides but I don't I didn't know if it was if it was within the agendized item or not we could potentially I could see this turning into a bigger agenda item maybe we could agendize this for the next meeting could be the first like thing too so it kind of sets the work first the agenda for the next meeting and then you and then I'll create its own actual slide deex and we'll move for we'll move for that when we do for meeting schu no he gets to just set the agenda oh perfect which is and as long as he gets it to hild time next agenda item will be that's one of his powers as the chair review of District committees air play of committees yes um so coming back then to kind
042of the procedures that we want to use to review um there have been a couple things pointed out that I think are going to be important one is the feedback loops all of us represent different positions different group groups within the district different subsets of people that we can go out and we can communicate with freely without violating the open meeting laws um I think it would be in our best interest to just say part of our reviewing procedure is to take one we'll know what uh what policy we want to maybe talk about next and we can get feedback before we get there but then also taking what we discuss out to them so that we're not waiting because if we wait until April 11th and then we come back and everybody's like hey
043wait a minute this doesn't make then we've only got a few weeks to make a lot of changes and that doesn't sound so much fun um especially not if it represents a lot of work on our part so I think one of the procedures that we should follow is in the meeting we'll set what policy we want to review for or policies for the next meeting that gives all of us a chance to go out and talk to the different people we're interacting with and get some feedback from them of hey when you're looking at this policy what makes sense what doesn't make sense so like in my mind I'm going to be meeting with the applc group pretty frequently um we meet about once a month sometimes more often I could reach out to
044and be like okay what's this look like right I can talk to some of my staff on my campus I can talk to some of the parents that are coming in and talking to me I can get some feedback on what they're thinking and then when I come back to this table it's not just what Brian thinks it's what does the community think that's being boiled through my brain yeah right I I think I agree I think that there is like a lot of connection here um one of the things that maybe we can make as like an agenda item is like homework or feedback because I think that we want to be thoughtful too about not bringing back the feedback of every community group for work you know what I mean so it might
045be like we're gonna focus on teacher feedback these are the like questions you might want to ask so just kind of focusing in on like when we're getting the feedback and who we're getting it from or even what to ask because I'm sure like I'd ask a very different question I might ask a random question that like Allan didn't read my brain and also asked somebody and then we were like oh we wish we would have gotten that from them so if we had like a time set in our meeting about who do we need to get feedback from before the next meeting and what should that feedback look like I think would be helpful and I don't know if we want to decide this if it has to be like official but when we
046did the strategic planning like years ago I felt like they did it in a certain pattern like it went to like leadership then teachers then like we came you know it wasn't like we got it from everybody they had like a flow to it so it's like we'll get leadership and teachers feedback before we give it to parents or maybe we did the opposite I don't remember to be honest I feel like that makes sense if you have stuff that you're like presenting to them you know what I mean I guess my concern there is that you're getting like peace meal feedback as you're still reviewing other you know other policies and I would hate to miss out out on a voice because we only address this with like teachers time or versus parents or
047you know what I mean like a final product thing then yeah is it um I don't know how this would look but I know sometimes work will do if there's something that we're looking for feedback on uh one person one designated person would sort of come up with a little mini notice email or something or whatever because the other thing is I think it's important to have it be consistent uh because we all kind of put our own twist on things and sometimes one person will remember some part one person will remember another part and then the message becomes a little blurred um so maybe like a you know a little uh cron Communicator type of announcement it can go out to the whole world um and then people can uh ask for feet that
048we can go and and talk to the people that we know of and say hey did you see the cron Communicator um you know we're looking for some feedback on that stuff so you have that first level of it hits everybody all over the place with a consistent message and then we can go and say be that second more personalized approach and say hey did you read this what do you think one of the things that that could also help with is it could guide so that the public comments that we're getting would be more relevant to the meeting that we're entering into um so like we're GNA talk about jic the public comment for jica R may not be the most appropriate one for that meeting but if we can do it that way
049where it's going out through like the Craton Communications um of hey here's a statement of what this board advisory committee is going to be reviewing at the next meeting um and then kind of go from there I mean I always felt there was a time when every District committee was required to have like a report that went out to everybody um well I hesitate to use the word required because that implies that it's still going on that that was a practice that was happening no matter what the district committee was it would go out I think it was a paper version at the time not the not the digital uh but just a like a it was a website type of thing where all the district committees are on there so anybody could go in
050and see these are the notes for the committee this is the feedback and stuff that they were looking for I mean it may not be necessary to do something like that but I mean I think it's a lot easier to do something like that for this because there's going to be this will be on YouTube like people can watch the entire meeting after the fact our um agendas and minutes are accessible online already so it'd be pretty simple to put something like that in the Katon communicator and easily access so and I think the difference between this committee and District committees are that these are open meetings that are more transparent than District committee meetings which are seemingly like behind closed doors um and so obviously it'd be a lot easier for this to be
051shared they just need to know that it exists is the only thing yeah I would I mean I don't mean to sound grandio but I I feel like this committee is far reaching in terms of its effect on several aspects of the district from employees to parents to students yes I don't think people realize how important these discussions are yeah so if we go with the feedback loop which they think it sounds like most of us are on board with at this point that answers one part of the procedures for for how we review policies um what i' like to recommend is that we set up kind of a schedule where especially keeping in mind this is a lot of dense reading um incredibly dense reading especially when we start trying to look at what's
052law or what's statute what's not statute all those different pieces um what if we in each meeting establish what policy we would be looking at in the following meeting one hopefully that would give us time to get some of the information with enough time to really dig into it and look at it allows us to go with the feedback loop gives um especially because a lot of it I'm thinking we've got the student on our committee um and on top of homework and sports and everything else we asking him to do this which is significant amount um and so gives him time to fit that in with everything else that he's doing like being a kid and having fun homework and class work and all of that um and so we could set just as
053the procedure hey at this meeting we're going to set for the next meeting what policy are we going to discuss and then the next meeting we have to ex set for the following meeting what policy are we going to discuss so that also helps with the feedback loop it helps with everything else kind of sets it up and then what I'm thinking is let's say at this point probably in the next meeting we discuss jic in depth then we come back the meeting after that and we review and say okay so after the discussion after kind of some of the proposed recommendations after people have had a chance to hear our discussion let's look at it one more time and then get into the next one and so we kind of set that pattern of
054we say okay we're going to meet on this one we meet on that one and then the following time we go back to the discussion not as in-depth and then we start the next discussion and then we come back to it the following time so that every policy we're discussing we're meeting on technically twice one in depth and one just to follow up on to see okay so we had this great discussion we've all had x amount of time to let it just sit in the back of our brains did anybody think of something that wasn't brought up did anybody have somebody come up to them and be like hey this doesn't make sense to me any of those types of things that sounds good I do have one other suggestion and I can talk
055to you about um to kind of go back to Mr Diaz's suggestion as well is um there is a parent um Carrie Samson from I believe her daughter goes to kraton Virtual Academy or goes no I'm sorry the kraton academy not Virtual Academy anymore um she is a professor at ASU and um is a parent in the district but has offered her support in if we wanted to do like an ongoing survey and help craft those questions in a way that would be you know yeah how you were saying obviously like academic or I don't know what word to use it I don't have my Master's folks okay lawyers don't know how to ask survey questions that are like not biased or whatever um so anyway um you know what I mean so anyway she's
056offered help with that and so if that's something that we would like want to have something that we could send out like here's all our meeting information you can view it here or click this link and provide us your feedback so we can incorporate that as we go and that can go out with the Craton Communicator as well but it's something that I can talk to to you about putting on the next agenda so that we could talk more in depth about what that could look like so okay putting that out there question yeah in terms of what he was suggesting does that fulfill the scope of what the board is asking because it sounded to me like there was other pieces that the board wanted to consider other than just this and or not
057other than this but more expansive than I think the one expansive piece would be if we did you know develop kind of like a Norms policy or suggestions for what the district Norms policy would look like or culture in alignment with these beliefs and stuff or we just decide that we don't need to reinvent the wheel whatever you guys all decide but I think that you know the student if you look at jic which I don't have it printed out here but if you look at jic that's like basically L it's like almost like a table of contents for the following policies right um and so it feels to me like you're reading this in like a you know you are a student here you will abide by these rules not like you're a student
058here you're part of this community what does being a part of this community look like in mean and in like a more positive rather than like a deficit kind of approach this just feels like a punitive approach to being a kid in this District versus if we're all members of this community how do we treat each other what do we show up like every day what are the things that we're agreeing to behave like why what are the ways we behave how do we treat those kinds of things right I think that's what we were talking about in terms of like some sort of norms or cultural agreements that are separate from always talking about what does discipline look like you know and and I'm also wondering in having listened to some of that discussion
059from the board that are we then also needing to look at some of the some of the staff ethics and behavior because that environment doesn't exist if we don't have aligned expectations of Staff like so so like that's where I agree this could become very expansive uh very quickly depending on how much do we want the policy to be holistic in its approach and not just here's how we're dealing with students and here's how we're dealing with staff so what I could suggest too is like let's say your F let's say the focus now is on students and we realize that those norms and things could apply to staff and there's a whole section of policies that deal with staff conduct obviously separate from these student conduct um you know if there's need for this
060committee to like continue in to the next school year to like let's say we get all our recommendations for the student conduct those are sent to the board but you're like obviously we need to bring the staff ones into alignment with whatever we've recommended you know when you when we when y'all come to the board with the final recommendations that could be a recommendation that this committee continue its work into the next school year to look at student or to look at staff conduct policies to bring those into alignment because I would obviously you've been given your kind of parameters for this committee it's really dealing with student conduct but I hear what you're saying and if we really want to do the work correctly I think that could be a potential recommendation to the
061board again like getting the the logistics of that figured out would be like a future thing does everybody stay on this committee it does a change all that but like if that's a thing that needs to happen it could be part of the recommendations that you make obviously too um okay I throw a wrench in it but follow me on this so I went to go look at these policies um and there's two additional policies that aren't part of this and it's the students rights and responsibilities ji see is that a copyright or is that ji I think and then jir is student rights and responsibilities but um it's like a little bit more like hashed out I think and I'm wondering if we keep talking about like it's needs to be more of like
062what we're doing but if we first start with like well what are we saying are our kids rights and responsibilities and what are we saying um are like uh what what are what are our goals for them and also what are our responsibilities to them like if we started with that like kind of aligning this to our guiding principles then we could always cross check the actual discipline policies to that certainly I if I'm talking too much taking up to too much space tell me to be quiet but at first glance on ji it looks word for word almost like one of these statutes and I obviously can't recall the statute off the top of my head because I just looked at them but the ji looks like exactly like one of the statutes like
063maybe it is word for word I think it is and then I and then the J I see how it has like the rights one meaningful education right to physical saf let's go down and see what statute they list sorry they don't oh it's not scrolling all the way where you find the where you find the ji oh we don't have it she's looking on that's the extra one you said second extra one it's ji and that's the statutes all it but the other one doesn't have any cross references okay J maybe it ends at G hey Hilda can you tell if this actually Scrolls anymore or if it's just done it's a j i does it go past the letter G okay I never know responsibilities yeah looks like okay ji kind of looks
064like the legal and then J is like and J is more like this is this is what our district is embodying in our beliefs and our vision yeah so maybe it is and then there ex could be exhibits in there maybe we we all make sure we probably need to remember because there's a distinction between what's actual policy and what's regulation because they function differently in terms of right okay oh yeah it does say regulation at the top I was going to say I feel like this is part of a something in statute but then there's no cross reference or anything at the bottom well but everything in jir should be connected to ji that's what I yeah and the and there there's six different in ji yeah ji all of which except for maybe
065844 I've provided to you today in those legal at least in the statute references I think 844 is the only one that's not included in what I sent for you today let me look up 844 844 has to do with suspension expion of proceedings for children's with children with disab disabilities okay yeah so circling back toh what Brian was talking about in terms of procedures and stuff I just for me I if I I don't have a problem with it it's just I I feel like what you're suggesting will take up all our meetings and if that's the scope of the committee then great um if that if the scope of the committee goes beyond that I worry about things falling off the table and I think you know that goes to how many meetings
066are you guys going to have how often are you meeting Etc no no idea search and like what you were describing before about like norms and agreements and stuff like that it it reminds me in if I'm wrong but it reminds me of like um some of the work that's being done and I don't know if every school has this but I know several schools have um what do they call them Equity committees each school has their own Equity committees where they're going and trying to develop Equity within the district or Equity within the site what that looks like what their goals are things like that and um I'm just curious okay does that align should that be a part of it should that not be a part of it because it kind of reminds
067me of that same process certainly and I think one of the other things that the board is looking for that I didn't mention obviously was some sort of Baseline continuity across the district for student conduct for like basically to where if you transferred jobs from one school to the other it's not going to be like you're operating in a different Universe about the you know how how discipline is or conduct is dealt with at that school or how anything is really you know it doesn't obvious ly things can't be exactly the same but it doesn't you shouldn't feel like you're starting from scratch and have no idea or like completely out a left field like I haven't dealt with this before that sounds to me like a code of conduct yeah yeah and I I
068you know code of conduct feels cold to me the title of it but that's just me um especially because I um I know this is just like I guess as the person who suggested this committee and given my job obviously and given having reviewed all these um policies um and I think I mentioned this at the board meeting before but um for me these policies are so much aligned with uh title 13 which is what my job deals with every day which is the criminal code um there's so much of this that mirrors the criminal code and is pulled from the criminal code that for me personally it's a the B most basic example we have of like how things tie into the school to prison pipeline is that we literally have policies that are
069from the criminal code a lot of that is statutory but at the same time whatever we can do to try to get away from that I think is also what our hope would be to like make as many things our own as a district as possible um and not have language that's like you know are already starting from this place of like punitiveness with with kids you know and I think and at the basic level that's kind of where we're coming from having something that feels more warm for our community you know what I mean I I know and then so when you're saying that it's making me think like you know maybe this is something that's not shouldn't live in policy maybe it's something like that grander thing is something that maybe belongs at
070like the district or superintendent or admin level as like a a committee that already exists you know maybe it's not a policy thing but I think maybe having that in that's something that we should definitely have in mind if we're making these policies to have them be I guess um permissive of something like that if it were to be created after this you know what I mean um to have that in mind as as we go through these policies it's so hard because everything has to be done in such Ridiculous Ways and uh there's so many obviously pieces that work together and there's you know the board's role is this and the superintendent and admin's role is this and the principal's roles are this and everybody has a role and it's hard to get everybody
071on the same page it's kind it feels like it's like a catch 22 right because you're you're you're trying to I want to use the word warm and fuzzy but you're you're trying to have something that's more inclusive more Community oriented but the flip side of that the legal side of it as I understand it is that you want it as black and white as you possibly can because you I mean that's what laws are created for right laws are created for the 2% or the 1% that try to find that little crack in the system or that court case where one word makes a difference between someone going to jail for 20 years or getting off for six months right so that cold language which I agree um definitely sets a tone that is
072not inviting at all um and I feel like policy is based on that yeah I I would find it especially if there was a a a legal problem where like a kid was supposed to be suspended for X Y or Z reason they need my understanding is that people need specific documentation to be able to say Hey you know we followed this step we followed that step that kind of thing certainly so someone can't say well you know I'm GNA bring my lawyer and go challenge this and you don't have the proper language in place to be able to do something like this um I worry about situations like that where you where that that language would be there for a reason you know I'm saying yeah yeah and so that's why I for example
073provided those documents my goal would be you know whenever we're meeting and going in depth to a policy to say this is something that is non-negotiable it has to stay because of stat stat this is something we have the freedom to change because here we have a shall but the law actually says may and we can make this whatever we want you know what I mean and there are places in our policies where we have gone to be more strict than the statute um and so I think there's room for a lot of growth in some of those places and then also for example at the beginning of jic um you know it said the superintendent will establish regulations right so some of these policies have like little intros to them and I think where
074we can we can set tones by like adding to or amending those paragraphs there's nothing that says we have to adopt the exact wording of that intro to the policy right and you can I think set the tone for a policy based on like how you begin the wording there right like as a district We Believe X Y and Z and you know what I mean some sort of guiding language for the beginning of the policy that maybe isn't as what the heck is this like you know what I mean that then leads into okay as I'm looking at this policy if I'm a district administrator or School administrator I need to have this in mind as I'm going through this policy rather than okay let me just go through the checklist of like the
075law but like you can still you like the law is up for interpretation there are shells but like okay I'm gonna have this lens on while I'm reading this policy rather than let me just jump right into this like cold punitive stuff I think there's a way to impact how somebody's reading and looking at these policies in gu in guiding language at the beginning do you think that some of this may lie in training um because oftentimes I've seen some situations where there is gray and if depending on the training of the person who is making that decision it could go one way or or another and I I mean because we've had this conversation before about how especially within HR um my understanding is the only training we receive as staff is training on
076sexual harassment and basic like legally required things um I I I I don't know if that would involve like you know sensitivity training or because I can tell you especially oftentimes with things like this you have stuff that is uh where people they just they don't they don't know how to interact right teacher to student administrator to student am I am I going the leads here so I think one of the important things to remember is what we've been tasked to do is to review the student policies if at the end of that we need to make a recommendation to the governing board that hey in our work doing this there are other things that we believe need to be reviewed we can always do that in our final recommendation I think in terms of
077the question of how do we get this idea of our policies currently are written as you don't do this you don't do this you don't do this you don't do this you don't do this how how do we lighten that while still meeting the legal requirements of guys you're not allowed to do this this this or this like and regardless of what human is in whatever position it's going to hopefully be interpreted and consistently corre so I think one of the things we could do is rather than write a new policy ji and then the regulation jir look and read a lot like what that piece anyways um and I think it would be important for us to review those as part of our work here because that's going to be the positive like okay
078if we can get this portion set with some wording that we can all agree on in here then that can be part of our lens moving forward of students have rights and responsibilities right and that that's that's part of what we do is policy is in place to protect the rights of the students yeah all the students all the time and so if we can clearly identify what we as kraton school district believe to be the fundamental rights not just the legally required ones but are there additional rights that we believe are students are entitled to not just the legally required responsibilities but are there additional responsibilities that we believe fitting with our beliefs and our vision and our mission yeah and all the work that our district has done if we can kind of
079take that approach to ji and jir then that should be enough to set kind of that side of our lens because ultimately when we're thinking through the procedures I'm thinking we need to have that statutory lens because because if something is required by Statute then we can't violate state law that's pretty important but there's nothing that prohibits us as a district from saying we want to provide a better experience than the statutory minimum right yeah like can I give an example um j i i students shall not be subjected to unreasonable or excessive punishment that's a perfect opportunity where we could have said they also have the opportunity to have a restorative element component to it and then even then we've like established there's a restoration element to our discipline and our conduct and like
080it talks about there like the responsibilties doesn't say anything about like um your responsibility to your community but it does say to keep it clean so so I feel like that is going to be really helpful even if we just even if we're just like reviewing and tweaking and or just reviewing um would be really helpful I think I also think if we start trying to if we start trying to move away from we've been asked to review the policies through some of these lenses and if we move away from reviewing policies into just discussions I'm worried we would never get to something actionable at the end of it whereas we can all say okay we're going to review these and even though there will be more work to be done and in the discussion
081we may come across and say hey in doing ji and jir there's some stuff that we feel maybe staff needs to be updated on there there are some other components here that we feel probably need to be done that can all be put into the final recommendations because the recommend you could have like the recommended policy changes and then also a list of Miss ellaneous recommendations came up along the way you know like what you're saying and so what given your perspectives given the feedback given everything you've looked at we are also recommending these things because of what we discussed or what we came across while doing these policy reviews so what exactly is the lens then so what I would recommend is we do a few different lenses the first lens is what is
082statute because if it's not statuto or if it is statutory we're required like that's the bare minimum requirement right um second lens that I would recommend is one that we would actually build through ji and jir by going backing adding to those with our vision our beliefs our mission and all the work that kraton has done around diversity equity and inclusion around restorative practices around understanding that children are children around all these different things loving the whole child all these things that we espouse as a district that this is who we are and what we do we're going to build that second lens by looking at ji and jir and saying is what we're saying our students have the right and responsibilities for is it matching who we believe we are right now and ultimately
083it's going to come down to who we all believe we are right um and then kind of the third one that I would want to look through is in our feedback loop what do other people think is going on right and then i' I'd recommend a fourth one too and I know it's a lot but at the same time I'm liting it to four okay my fourth recommended lens would be is this something that we can actually do because as an assistant principal I can tell you if we come out with a set of policies that are pie in the sky and I look at it and I go okay that's great but I don't know how to do that and it's not I don't know how to do that it's I can't see this
084working because of this this this I can't see teachers being on board with this because what happens when this occurs and now in policy this is our only option and the teacher now frustrated with what we're doing there are things I think that has to be kind of that last lens is what's the practicalities behind the policies we're recommending and all the good things that are happening at the schools like there have been a lot of like changes and improvements and just a focus towards those things so like what are the current practices and so that it's not like a tossing the baby out with the bath water but taking the best of everything we're seeing and creating something solid so maybe at the next meeting um we could even just have it up to
085remind us even if it's on a posted paper to but like it what is the statutory requirement how does does this how does this align with our vision what are we missing and how does this work in practice basically like those sound like the four questions we're asking every time we're looking at a p is what you're saying or that you guys are looking at a poliy what were you gon to say Alan no I was I was just going to say I I I like how Brian how you described those four lines is because at the end of the day policy is not meant to be our vision statement yeah no right that it's it's meant to be um actionable guidance so that the superintendent and everybody else in the district has a sense
086of what are the parameters we're supposed to be functioning under to make the day-to-day life of school work so yeah so go ahead I agree I feel like I have I've done a lot of listening these past two meetings and not a lot of talking I'm just like absorbing and learning um but that I think is helpful like those four things like are helpful in like me as the teacher thinking like what is the purpose of all of this like every single thing has those four purposes so that is helpful and I love talking so you can always just be like stop talking because I won't I do love talking I just don't quite know what I'm talking about yet closer you're also coming here having talked a lot all day I'm sure yeah all
087day long hours but yeah I'm listeners right I'm just listening to everything we're talking about um I like the way all the division was was defined that way I think it's going to work if we can figure all that out I think we can we can have it working pretty good I'm going back to the agenda items if that's okay yep um so I feel like I have a question too yes just a clarifying question so you keep mentioning ji and jir r are you using that as a guideline or are you guys talking about changing that because ji and jir is not one of the tasked policies that you guys are tasked to change we are talking about maybe adding it in as a because we are allowed to um you are allowed to
088to talk about others that interact with those policies that you guys were tked to change so I'm just concerned that you guys are going to start changing other policies that you guys that are not the ones you guys were tasked to change and those are going to kind of be you guys are going to just make it too big to be done on time what are the policies they're here listed on the agenda right here in the agenda jic jca all so the next board meeting is um we just had it last Tuesday but it it definitely says we we can also make changes to other policies that are it just saysed says might be disussed other policies that might cross reference right might be discussed and talk about ji J as a guideline but
089then if you guys are talking about changing that's not one of the policies and I'm like I said I'm just scared that you guys are gonna start bring other policies that it's going to get too big to where you guys will not complete on time yeah fair enough we can I can at the Tuesday November 14 board meeting get put on the agenda and try to get approval yeah for us to make additions or changes to ji and J if that's something you guys are interested in I think that'd be really helpful because I I almost feel like if if we're not changing that or making edits at the very least and even if we started with all of these we'd have to go back and fix those anyway so it feels like I don't
090know the analogy but it feels like what we want for kids should come first and then like how we ensure that happens comes next so what you're saying is we we're trying we're gonna next meeting want see we can add ji and Jr at the next board meeting I'll ask to be put on the agenda kind of like I did this last one just to have an action item where I'm requesting that the board I would move that we request the board allow this Comm committee to um include in the policies that they are re reviewing um recommendations for ji and J to be added to that list because then you wouldn't have this issue where you would only have to discuss it and not be able to recommend changes and then it's kind of
091tangental to that and going back to this um I've been going back and forth in my head is it do we feel like it would be better for us to do kind of like the easier ones and get them out of the way so that things are covered or do we want to do maybe like the meteor heavier ones um like JK student discipline I think will likely be a lot harder and like more discussion and work than thank thankfully jicf the secret societies and gang activity but God willing all the schools but if it's like a matter of like you got to have something produced then maybe yeah let's look at secret societies first and then we know we've covered that so I feel like we kind of need to decide the order in
092which these are going to happen and help Focus us and I I love tring stuff off the list but I also like doing important things so I don't care um I think it'll partly depend on if we get permission to look at ji and jir um because without that it it's going to become very nebulous that ji and jir could provide us that lens of as a district this is kind of how we've been working and this is what we find important this is what we find to be a value um and so if we can get permission to review those ones in the same way I would recommend that we would start with those because that would then be part of the lens for everything else moving forward my only concern is that the
093board meeting is not till November corre I was goingon to say meanwhile I don't think we have time to wait another meeting before we start our so maybe you could however in secet society or student interrogation searches and arrests is going to be a lot of statutes it's a lot yeah and it's not there's not going to be a ton of room for which I'll be honest with you is why I think we should start with jic C I think we should start with the heavy lift work we have a s we I mean we kind of have a sense of what that philosophical pieces are and while we may not yet have permission to change ji jir to reflect that um hopefully that will still be a part of our conversations but I if
094we don't start the heavy lifting where it needs to happen then the rest of it you know because my concern is we do we do all the statutory stuff which is fast and then we have to come back to that after we've changed these things to then make sure that they're aligned and I that's also true so start with jic at the next meeting than um come up with we still have a half an hour right yeah well that was s oh it's seven sorry oh gosh we didn't to get to the meeting schedule I don't think we agendized no yeah we didn't mean I'm not trying to keep us here I just could remember what time we got done I did want to touch on some things if you guys are gonna come back
095just to prepare if anybody had any quick questions about the documents I provided since we're here and that's agendized for the jic policy um I know it was a lot to look at um and some of the highlighting should be self-explanatory but some of it may not and so I just wanted to give a quick just a quick information some quick information really quick I'll hold this up so um what I try to do is if you notice at the end of jic there is um a list of corrupt legal references and so what I did was went through and gave you all cop I of each of these statutes okay on each of those statutes I then highlighted what I thought was either going to be important language to pay attention to which is
096the shs right or the maze or something that corresponds with something that you might take a look at because I already had in mind you know kind of this Vision idea right so um if anybody wants copies of them they copies of everything color up here um so everything would either would look like a statute now the one that you may like what is this stat were these so there's this fun thing um called notes of decisions okay so there might be things that aren't defined in a statute I did include one of the statutes was like a definition statute 13105 that's like the general criminal definition statute and some of the statutes they Define their own terms within the statute other things that aren't defined where a court has made a decision about that
097and I thought it might have been important for you guys to know that's what these notes of decision are and so I highlighted a couple cases where I was like oh this might answer a question if you still have a question mark about what that means for the statute and so for 15507 and 15843 like for example here it says um like these are examples where they're saying you know expressing anger and merely calling a teacher a degrading name were not unprotected speech so um meaning like you can't you can't that doesn't count as abuse of a teacher basically so for you to read the statute you might think that this could be abuse of a teacher but if you go and see what the case law says while the J the court is saying
098um no telling a teacher to f off doesn't is not AB does not constitute abuse okay so like that just gives you a little bit I've highlighted where my you a little more clarification on what that looks like and in this one I believe this is pupil disciplinary proceedings so I highlighted like this is an attorney general op opinion that says like a student may not be suspended or expelled because of Habitual absences from school so like even though it doesn't say that in the statute it had to be said by somebody um although there is a caveat which we don't have to deal with if they're over the age of 16 then they could be Exel for habitual absences from school we don't have to deal with that um and then for example here's
099another attorney general opinion that's like School District governing boards must prescribe rules relating to the discipline suspension expulsion after consultation with teachers and parents of the district and those rules must Encompass excessive acente as and penal penalties that would include failure in a subject or failure to pass grade so these are all just things I included to give you a little more um Fe a little more background on what they probably um mean or could be interpreted as or have been interpreted as by the courts um and I only included those on two of the statutes but I did look at them for all the statutes today but these were the only ones where I saw there was anything important that might be worth looking at for you all if and I'll continue to do
100that um because I'm not a member of the committee you're always welcome to email me or text me with questions about legal things I will answer your questions as fast as I can I'm putting I'm making myself available for that so if you're like what the hell does this mean I'm happy to talk to you on the phone send you a text message send you an audio message of me talking I'm sure that'd be a pleasure to listen to and um anything that works for you in your time frame um I'm ready to meet yall where you are at and again everything I'm telling you is my opinion and not necessarily legal advice right um yes so I'm trying to help in the best way possible without also providing any liability for myself but hopefully
101as we go through you guys can also provide me feedback and what uh else you're looking for but I intend to do this for every policy we look at and so like I put this together this past weekend I try to get them to f as fast as possible so that you guys have time to look at them um ahead of time because I know it is a lot for me I was like easy easy I think I did this in like 30 minutes but then I forget like people aren't reading statutes all day so I need to keep that in mind so um again any questions I'm so happy to answer um what anything means anything like that like statute speaking would love to help in any way um and I can give everyone
102I can have Hilda send out you should have my email address it's K Gibson mlan Atron schools.org I can also have to send out my phone number everyone in this universe seems to have my phone number so I don't mind if you text or call me it's fine um whatever I can do to help you all that's what I'm here for so awesome thank you that's super helpful by the way I appreciate it so there's that if you have any qu so then I guess we're going to move on you guys are going to move on to jic at the next meeting in more in depth but I just wanted to say that because I imagine y'all take a look at these before the next meeting again yes um so kind of looking at it
103I would say jic is the meest one that we currently have permission to do I would say the next meest one if we get permission to it would be ji and jir yes in terms of like there there's a lot to unpack in both of those um all three of those technically um after that I I ordered them I want to hear he your list we matched um I'm thinking the next one that is likely to cause the most discussion would be student dress oh I did that three but yes um JK seems a little meaty is All I'm gonna say JK also seems very me I had read that far down most controversial what is K discipline JK student discipline so student conduct the student responsibilities student student dress and student discipline got some
104um differents that's what are we're going to try to go I think we're just kind of naming them off right are you you've numbered them yeah I'm hearing you guys say you guys we match numbers I ordered them I was just putting them on the spot so what if we plan jic for the next meeting that's a Jr oh Ji a ji Jr is only if we get the approval to do it is only if we get the approval so put it out there I think it you don't shouldn't have a problem there um since it pretty closely aligns with one of the things that we were asked to do I'm not anticipating that either uh JK would be the next meest one medius whatever it's late I apologize um I agree I think student
105dress is it's going to have the most discussion outside of this room yes yeah um hands down student dress will have the most discussion outside of this room would be my guess and it's going to be the one that the most students and parent like yeah I'm an assistant principal I feel a lot of questions about student dress all the time um so I'm anticipating that one needing some time do we have maybe you could so how many is that's jic J ji and j i r and then J K and then you said j i a r a so that would be like four meetings worse so maybe you could potentially just schedule dates for the next four or five meetings which would probably take us through break at least yeah so so next
106week next week I no I'm going to say nobody wants to meet on a Tuesday next week with it being Halloween um today can we meet November 7th yeah so that's election day today is election day if anybody has a concern it's also parent engagement at mon Vista okay is there another day that we week that would make more sense and it doesn't have to be a Tuesday could it be Thursday whatever you guys decide what about Thursday Thursday is the fall Championship sports games we're definitely gonna be there so for the district um 8th and is Wednesday a bad day for everybody is that like a answer or like a honestly Wednesdays might be easier because we all get out of our meetings Wednesdays actually would be awesome because Thurs w't be here late
107yeah we don't usually do IEPs either and kids aren't as late so Wednesday the 8th I I already see committee meetings on there right so yeah so Wednesdays are when all the district committee meetings are happening so what time do those usually run 4:30 to 6:30 oh okay yeah we don't want to run after that no what time do you all get out on Wednesdays though who's on what committees well Allan's on groups of committees that rotate Wednesday yeah but there's only five of us I was just wondering I'm on two of the four so how about you what time does do you all do school get out on Wednesdays one sorry 120 we just have PD what's the latest start school because we get out at 2:40 what time you guys get out at
1082:40 too right Wednesday no just any day 2:40 we get out at 315 at Ma can I a suggestion as a parent yes uh what about a little bit earlier since there's a student that has to be present I mean it becomes a little late that's student for the next day okay thank you for that I appreci what if we do Thursday the second does anyone have any dealto conflict that day on the second yeah so that's the Craton Education Foundation fundraiser event and so Jay and I will be there what day do you have open let's go that way I don't have court in the afternoons and I can Flex my schedule because I'm salaried so I will be here whenever y'all tell me to be here as long as I'm not at a
109jail or something which I can plan around let's let's do Thursday the 9th it is the fall championship games but we work around that if we need to um and what if we move the meeting up to five what time are the fall Championship things actually if we do it at 5:30 that would give time for the games to conclude okay 5:30 as I'm thinking because the games will start at 4:30 so the Championships should be done by 5:30 because no game runs longer than an hour the upside is the next day is a is a holiday so so none of us have to wake up early either oh there you go and then it looks like the next me the next week after that is the board meeting and then the week after that
110is Thanksgiving so potentially we could look at something that final week of November for a second meeting or okay throwing that out there I don't make any decisions here second week of or the week of the 27th can we get another meeting in the week of November 27th so is itna stay uh that the only day for me that I wouldn't be able to move around is I have my youth Equity Summit parent night that night um with on the 28th which night oh no the 30th we're on the 30th yeah okay you telling about November right yes either the 28th or the 30th would work for either the 28th so so is there another meeting already existing on the 28th no awesome does that work for Tech folks I was like how do I
111rever to you collectively okay 5:30 or do you want five on the 28th I'm okay with trying to move it up to five on that one because there's nothing else going on that night yeah and then sorry y'all I don't have I'm guessing your Winter break starts on the 18th no it actually starts on the 21st 22nd 22 wow okay sound really good I'm she's giving you per I don't have the [Music] AC um okay so then I was like trying to figure out all right would we have a time to meet one additional time before winter break I know we all have a lot going on so I just what other date did you guys throw we haven't yet so far November 9th and November 28th okay those are the two I have yes
112we're trying to see if we can fit one more in before break week of the 12th the week of the 11th yeah they off 5:37 change one was five we have a board meeting on December 12th is the only other one is intended to be 5 to 630 okay I'll just wait till we get that what about December 14th to the 9th right I I have it open December 14th would work for me December 14th December 14th that'll work for me meeting but okay December 14 I woulding on the date 14 at 5 or 5:30 I can do five if that I would like to do them at five as much as sure possible one for our student and two because I've got little kids at home so we'd go 5 to 6:30 ideally 5
113to 6:30 okay then I would just in the future I think five's early or is the earliest we should probably go just because of the public comment situation if somebody or got it that makes sense so is it gonna stay 5 to 6:30 well in the reality handful of us ever being called into special ed meetings to serve as District Representatives those all H happen after school constantly so well I can see three of us very easily being called in on the same day at the same time um and not being able to get here before five so then that's three and we said we wanted five meetings I think we said let's try to at least get four see if we can get the last one after break the eth we start again the
114eth okay I would we have a board meeting on the 9th just putting that out there I would actually like if we could ease into the load and maybe look at the week of the 15 okay so there's MLK Day on the 15th oh shoot so we're in January now yes the 18th at this point we're far enough out that I don't have anything I know that's I was thinking it's like we're far enough out that it's like if we get it scheduled now then nothing can replace it and I'll send out the cites tomorrow I thank you yes so which I'm sorry which date were we talking about then Brian January 18th at 5 can we do that at 5:30 I'm sorry monov Vista has a parent night at Peter Piper Pizza would the
11516th be better would the 16th be better the 16th actually is open for me but4 the 16th is better for me the 16th I just I know um there's been you know it's the day after holiday so I don't know if that poses any issues for Hilda OR tech people okay you good okay well I'll be at work so it's a work I know I know I got some Flack when I said we should have a board meeting the day after Labor Day so I'm just making sure I'm not pissing anyone off again oh for teachers it's the day before a vacation mentality is if we start half an hour earlier let's do it the day after pretty much so January 16th did yall say five or 530 five five five on the 16th of
116January okay okay we did it all right now sorry there's meetings scheduled yay so we have the next five meetings scheduled we will come or four me next four meetings I can't count it is okay so the next four meetings scheduled will come on November 9th ready to discuss jic okay um so that's no 9th J we technically ordered five but we made four meetings I ordered yeah but like it sounded like ji and Jr were going to be addressed in conjunction yeah they I would say probably because ji just looks like the statute and jir looks like the part we could actually discuss and then just to keep in mind that's that leaves four policies left after that January 16th meeting and we know like for example a couple of a couple of these
117are going to be heavily relying on statutes like the expulsion of students um and the interrogation and then the other two might be easier to also men just because of their content and maybe a little bit outdated um so anyway I I feel like this is a good pacing situation as far as the meetings go does any y'all feel good about that I know we want to go home but what what so I'm gonna review jic what should I come with I'm coming with like I was concerned about this can I finish a calendaring can we I I just I want to make sure that we that we're capturing that no later than our December meeting that we're calendaring out the rest of our meetings because we know what our calendars start looking like farther
118ahead that we can be getting on top of that the easier it'll be for us to find dates yeah okay I've got that noted to add to the agenda for the December 14th meeting to calendar out the second semester of everything that we need to do and then for that could we just have maybe Hilda send out an email that reminds us of those four questions you posed basically so that those are the four questions you're kind of coming with like your your personal answers to what you think those questions are for what you've I will email the four questions we discuss to Hilda and Hilda will email them out to everybody until then it would be everybody on the committee's looking at jic and in your mind answering those four questions as you look
119at jic as an individual and then coming to discuss your thoughts right correct okay anything else before I move our meeting I second all in favor unanimous 32 top of the seventh Diamond Becks three
