without my iPad good evening to everybody buenas noches at todos we're going to go ahead and get started we start off with our land acknowledgment the Creighton School District understands that our community of schools is located on the ancestral land of the hodem Jude and accumul Oldham people who descended from the Hohokam and have inhabited these lands since time immemorial the oatham whose name translates literally to people are a vibrant culture and Community spanning countless Generations into the past continuing to thrive in the present and carrying a powerful Legacy for Generations into the future with this acknowledgment the current School District formally recognizes that the traditional care and keeping of these lands by indigenous people as is an aspirational model of community stewardship that we are committed to honor with practices policy and human relations

and before we do the Pledge of Allegiance I would like to take a couple minutes um we did have a Community member in a really bad car accident this weekend um his partner was in the car accident as well and she's not doing very well this Community member also has worked in her schools with the youth stewardship stewardship programs so I would just like it if we just take a couple minutes and salmon our best especially to his partner who's not doing so well at these moments thank you I appreciate that and Miss Ayers can you lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance please I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic oh thank you and that brings us to roll call Miss Gibson McLean myself and

Ms Ayers are here miss mcsheffery and miss McCaleb are not present today we want to welcome everybody to tonight's meeting and remind the audience of the request to address board cards that must be completed and submitted to the board secretary if they wish to speak to an agenda item board policy provides for two cards White cards to be submitted in order to speak to an agenda item and blue cards to be submitted in order to speak during public comments due to the open meeting law board members are not allowed to address items that are not on the agenda and this is per policy b-e-d-h and that brings us to the approval of the agenda I move the governing board approved agenda as presented second all those in favor yeah go ahead sorry no it's actually

it's an action item in personnel it's not a consent it's not inconsistent before everything else sorry sure I'm sorry what are you having a question on it's a fairly short item I would I would move that we place that right before six after the 10 agendas get out of here if they need to so after um Fife yes and before six got it so I moved the governing um board approve the agenda um just moving section 7A right before 6A second all those in favor aye perfect thank you Miss Gibson all right and then miss Juarez do we have any public comments today we do awesome thank you and that brings us to Mr Mann our superintendent report thank you very much first off I'd like to it's kind of belated now because labor day's

passed but I hope everyone had a very restful holiday weekend and one of the reasons that I that I put that out there is there's been a lot of activity over the last couple of weeks and I know everyone's been working like really hard so I know everybody probably was due for a three-day weekend and a good rest we've had some learning walks underway we're seeing a lot of great opportunities to check in on learning progress checking in on kids connecting with their learning targets and the success criteria which is excellent I know Dr pombo's in the front row here and she ran an amazing workshop with the rest of the curriculum and instruction team last Thursday for all of our leadership team getting deeper into the data wise process and I have to share

just because it really touched me to see the level of Engagement of all of our leaders I don't think you know nothing saying anything negative about prior sessions but I haven't seen everyone that deeply engaged probably in my eight years here it was incredible even when folks were on their technology if I walked around behind them they were actually looking at their student data or following the slide deck for the training which was amazing like zero off task the entire day there's no way they would behave like students it was amazing so I just it made me very hopeful for what's yet to come because I think this is part of our Pathway to really powerful student outcomes so very appreciative to the entire team for their work and efforts on that and we actually

had a small section on on Equity at the end and Linda McKeever did an amazing job kind of bringing the end of the day home with that which was really powerful we have our first great kids Congress coming up in a couple weeks before our next board meeting we're still getting all of the Ducks in a row for for that but it's one of the things I'm really excited about to get an opportunity to connect with our kids Congress kids from this year speaking of our students you'll notice we actually have artwork back in the boardroom we're handling it a little bit differently this year what we've asked for is samples from all of our schools and so they have actually provided us with a few pieces to highlight the great artwork that's happening in

their schools and then um starting tomorrow with the pre-conference and Thursday and Friday this week is the Arizona school boards Association law conference very excited for this first conference with the new director there I'm looking forward to seeing what all there is that's going to be exciting and new to learn and we have quite a number of I think we have several governing board members and quite a number of our leadership team members that will be in attendance for that and I have to say and the reason I bring this up as a superintendent's report item that particular conference is one of the things that's really helped me over the years develop an understanding of school law school issues governance and so I'm something that I can't highly enough recommend the people that are working

in this field because I think it really helps prepare leaders for the types of leadership opportunities and challenges that they run into so and that's all I have for today thank you thank you Mr Man Miss air so I'll go ahead and start with you good evening I don't have too much to share I also am looking forward to the law conference that one I really enjoy that one um and then the cube conference which is my absolute favorite conference um is the week after so I know we're going to be really busy together the next couple of weeks um so I'm looking forward to that and I want to apologize for not being able to go to the community um what is it Council that you guys have on Thursday um in a cup

in a couple weeks um because my sister decided she wanted to get married all of a sudden so I gotta fly up there that night but I I love Community Council and I'm really sorry I'm gonna miss it thank you thank you Miss Harris Miss Gibson McLean um I don't have much I hope everyone had a good weekend my children were at their in-laws for two nights which is fantastic and at my in-laws sorry not there at loss um anyway so it was relaxing and I hope other people got a break too for a million the same reasons Jay said I'm excited to go to this conference next week I wish I could go to the law conference sounds like fun um yeah no and I'm excited to get this committee going also very excited

about that so anyway happy Tuesday awesome thank you I just have a couple of things so last week um NASCAR did a luncheon and a whole bunch of like School Board leaders and other people were there but what was really neat about that is that they partnered up with Phoenix Children's Hospital and Phoenix Children's Hospital we're talking about how they're growing and how they're doing all these things and how their ER wait time is super super long and usually it's because some families will use the ER as their primary care physician because they don't have access to insurance or anything then of course my mind starts rambling or you know like going in circles and I'm like well we own property in our school district and if you're trying to expand why not expand in

school districts or certain sites where we can have maybe a pop-up Phoenix Children Medical Center in the community so there's going to be some talks going on with that so that was really interesting and this is why it's so important um one of the things that I've realized being on the school board is that relationships and networking sometimes is the number thing one thing that you can do and all the knowledge just comes it's who you're meeting who you're talking to to in reality you know help you get to the overall goal which is serving our students um so that was really neat um last week I also got to attend the Creighton Academy's volunteer orientation I'm also parents in the school district I have a second grader at the Creighton Academy so I'm actively

in that school um and it was just really neat for the first time to see a lot more parents um I know that that's one of the growing schools my daughter has been there since it opened so it's been really neat to see how it's been growing and how parents are really getting involved in it being really like a community school so that was not neat to see I'm not going to mention the law conference because Mr man beat me to it but that's really a great time to connect also with other school board members there's 260-something school districts 200 of them are part of Arizona School Board Association rural districts native districts so it's really neat to come together and really talk about issues in public education and how it's in one way affecting

us but they have a whole another set of you know issues so that's in um really neat and lastly um last week I recently joined our previous state superintendent Kathy Hoffman she created a committee called project or a project called project Oasis and we're going to be targeting special education so I know special education has been something that's been warring some in our school district and who else to learn all the ins and out to then our previous superintendent so myself along with some other school board members and other school leaders across Maricopa County have signed up to be part of this project so we're going to be learning a lot more and how we can assist our special education and see what other resource we can bring to them and that's my update for

now and that brings us to 5 a and I move the governing board approved consent agenda items a through n in accordance with policy b e d b Dash e second all those in favor aye motion passes and that's going to bring us now to 7A which is 6a now and this is the approval of assistant superintendent of business and development and I'll switch it over to Mr Mann Madam president members of the board um it is my absolute pleasure to hand this off to Dr Laura and our executive director for human resources but um I do have to share that you know when we set out to fill this position um my hopes for the quality of candidate were not necessarily extremely high because there are a limited number of people with you know

the types of expertise skills and Leadership skill sets that really kind of meet our standards and I'm so appreciative of Dr Lauren and the entire team involved because I think they just you know said ah tough tough to find a great person not a problem we're going to do it and so I think the as you'll hear in a few moments the candidate being recommended is truly amazing and very excited for us to get on with sharing that information someone pass it off thank you uh president Kario doll members of the board we did conduct a comprehensive search for the assistant superintendent of business and development we in the Department of Human Resources advertise the vacancy through the typical means that we do the job boards uh through Arizona Department of Education Facebook indeed Arizona

School Personnel administrators Association Arizona Association of school business officials Etc there were seven viable applicants in the pool for the position the paper screening resulted in the top three candidates who were selected to participate in an extensive in basket activity and the interview process we had an interview panel of 12 participants made up of District directors administrators teachers support staff a member of our community as a community partner and a sixth grade student from Biltmore Preparatory Academy who asked some wonderful questions they recommended the top candidate for the fine most interview and the superintendent assistant superintendent teacher of teaching and learning Mr Dr dupin myself and Emily wasleck our director of communications and marketing held the final interview the candidate being recommended this evening is Vanessa Shapiro uh Miss Shapiro has served as Director of

Finance for Paradise Valley School District since 2017 and before that was a Financial Coordinator for Littleton Elementary School District and a data accuracy specialist again with the Paradise Valley School District her experience also includes leadership development in the Departments of Transportation food service and Technology her reputation throughout the state is one of being an expert and leader in the educational field she is known for being a strong advocate for public education and a champion for students Ms Shapiro has a master's degree in accounting with the CPA emphasis as well as a bachelor's degree from Walden University and an associate's degree in Business from University of Phoenix I don't know if she's going to share this but she started her career in education as an aide at that level and worked her way through various support

staff occupations in her time and as an educator so we're very fortunate and pleased to recommend Miss Shapiro to the board thank you Dr Lauren well we're really excited we've heard wonderful things about you so with that being said I move the governing board approve Vanessa Shapiro for the position of assistant superintendent of business and development effective September 18 2023 second all those in favor yay congratulations and it's our tradition to invite you over yes and if you have a few words for us we would love to hear from you thank you very much I appreciate it um I did want to go ahead and just introduce um I have quite a few people here with me today and they're kind of spread out uh I have my son faydon Shapiro um there he is

default uh his best friends Bryce and Aaron who have become like my son my admin assistant Leah Blankenship from Paradise Valley I just would can't look at her because I might cry um my son is also videoing right now with my two daughters who could not be here tonight oh nice um uh Rick matelski one of my very very close friends and two of my highest mentors in my career Tom Elliott and Kathy Elliott have also joined the Vanessa fan club so we have it so I just wanted to say good evening to the entire Creighton Community uh thank you very much um superintendent man governing board president uh Carrillo Dahl and governing board members thank you for giving me this opportunity to join the Creighton family I look forward to creating relationships that will

support and continue the passion that we all have for educating students I bring over 20 years of experience and success and I know deep in my heart that all of that time was preparation for me to stand here today before you the connections we build together in education are strong and enduring and I really look forward to building those connections with Creighton I'm excited to do my part to inspire adventurous thinkers collaborative Learners and kind-hearted leaders thank you for your time tonight thank you so much congratulations [Applause] all right now that brings us to six a thank you guys have a great night to 6A um which is now 7A update on access diversity equity and inclusion and approval of agreement for services and products between Corwin and Creighton Elementary School District so um I

just wanted to have a little bit of background information on this I think that the work has been going amazing I just wanted us to get a little bit of an update of where we've been what has been implemented what this new um contract I guess you say will bring into the district that hasn't been done differently and just and give the the rest of the governing board members an opportunity to ask any questions if they have any good evening thank you for inviting us to tonight's uh governing board meeting Madam president governing board members Mr Mann members of the executive team um students staff parents and community members we're happy to be here to give you an update on our Equity initiative our access diversity equity and inclusion initiative we've been doing a lot

of programming and planning I will be presenting second but I want to also introduce Billy Mann Billy Mann was previously a social studies teacher at Mackin and then he did SEL work at Mackin for a year and he was the first SEL Advocate that was hired so Billy's going to start us off and then we'll tag team in a few minutes hello everyone good evening tonight we're going to review our Equity Journey for the past few years and we are currently in year three of this journey in year one we first established working groups and after establishing these groups we had taken a moment to explore examples of historical inequities and their impacts to make sure that we don't repeat those same mistakes we also collaboratively worked as a district to build tone and Trust

amongst each other and we did this by exploring each other's perspectives and being open to hearing and learning new things about one another we also had an opportunity to see our first pilot event of Youth Equity stewardship which was done at Monte Vista School here we saw a lot of examples of student voice a lot of artwork and most of it being student created we got an opportunity to learn from not just teachers but also students at our schools here you'll see an example of community agreements that were developed by students for students words on this poster are exemplified on the words written next to it and the reason why we create these Community agreements especially with students is to make sure that we create an uh community of openness and inclusion that students can

refer back to and be sure to hold themselves and others accountable our strategic goal reflects our commitment to equity we do this through restorative practices advocacy as well as making sure to include accessibility and inclusion and all the decisions we make foreign you'll see the path forward for this goal with a strong emphasis on social emotional learning as evidenced by the bullet points down low which reflect the Washington State social emotional learning standards which we which we have adopted in this District I will now pass it back to miss McKeever so last year was year two and our goal was to establish site Equity teams at every building with the opportunity to develop professional development opportunities that can then be taken from the site Equity teams to the whole staff so the goal was to

try to deliver the monthly monthly equity-based lessons and activities and once again our students participated in yes the youth Equity stewardship piece which also integrates a lot of the the equity peace access and understanding understanding about people's perspectives their identities and who they are and what their cultures are so with the yes events they were presented at each school and we were able then to work with those students afterwards and I'll speak to you a little bit more about that so what we had done is students who participated could apply to be a steward at their building so there was an interview process a short process and students were selected so this year those students are also going to attend our yes events but they are also working at their buildings to develop lessons to

support Equity work and Equity conversations but also the culture conversations the spiritual conversations the community conversations within other grade levels so they may be pulled out for um for a a time to work with the with the um the child Justice Advocates or they may be set in an elective where they see that person regularly they'll be working on identifying their goals beginning to develop lessons and then ultimately the lessons will be teased out with two to three students presenting to different grade levels with an adult with them in short in short segments of time and and moving up to eighth grade and that is how we're looking at the sustainability for youth Equity stewardship so these are nice photographs that we have from one of the youth Equity stewardship events our students often have

these feelings whether it's about belief or fear the known the unknown the hopes and so on and so from these stages then students have more of an identity within themselves in terms of what do I believe and what do I believe about myself and sometimes we test what we believe about others what are our fears and our fears grounded do we need more information and it's all built around the potential that our students have to be able to to work within the stewardship realm of kindness and supporting others but also being able to to manage to manage difficult conversations and so we're very excited for the Youth Equity stewardship events so we over the course of time we've had challenges and when we have challenges we want to have Reflections and as you can kind

of read through some of the challenges and reflections ultimately we learn after the fact and then we we work to to provide Clarity and to provide more opportunity for difference problem solving and different solutions based opportunities so for example one of them which is the third from the bottom is responding when hurt and harm are occurred it's not something that we were really prepared for but in reflection we know how we'll Advance moving forward to repair those situations those types of relationships and some and it takes time and it takes trust and takes tone and so that's an ongoing ongoing kind of an effort so our intentions and actions for this year we're in year three include identifying where each school is in their Journey um identifying um developing and implementing anti-racist practices we're going

to continue moving forward with deep Equity strategies and framework which includes the yes alignment and will support the embedding of equity goals and all that we do so in terms of on-site coaching we're very fortunate to have two individuals who you'll see pictured here we have uh Dr Trudy Arriaga and Dr Tyrone Bates these are individuals who started in the classroom worked their way up through the system and then began doing their own Equity work and so Dr Ariaga has recently been a superintendent for 14 years in Ventura Unified School District she's also a writer and I recall the name of her book is email when leading and Dr Bates has 23 years of experience from being a teacher he has been in elementary and secondary classrooms and as a principal he was a high

school principal and an assistant principal he most recently was in the Shawnee Mission School District in Kansas City and I believe I want to say there's over 40 44 schools in the district and so the equity work going on at Shawnee Mission has been a long-term situation and Shawnee Mission is a great Community but a large breadth when you're talking about 44 different buildings so really excited about having the end of the individual calls we had a call today with um with one of our principals we did a virtual call and we were able to introduce Mr Dr Bates to one of the the principals we had conversation about next steps we also had a couple of times when we had to go off camera because there was a situation happening at the at the

building but they're already connecting and the connection is is solid it's positive and we feel like it's a meaningful opportunity to get a get a picture of the school before you actually come in to offer support and these experts will also support administrators The Advocates and site stakeholders and coaching to plan Equity into more deeper professional development so our intentions and actions for year three are abundant and I know that you've had the slide for a period of time this is what is considered to be a menu that can be explored during pod Cycles um and I'm not sure if you're clear on pod Cycles so pod Cycles require time to plan collaboratively plan lessons then deliver the the uh the instruction so the Consultants or the experts will observe and take notes and then

debrief and that's a very common practice in education if I were working with a teacher for instance who might be struggling with some instruction I can easily sit down and we can do the plans together and then I will observe the instruction and then we debrief to to look at you know what's what really went well what are some pieces that we could shine up and make a little bit more polished or maybe go to a different point but those are the types of pod cycles that are principles and our leadership are our site Equity teams will be working in with these experts foreign so additionally we will have yes events this year we will hold them for all schools and new student groups and in addition to those student groups we're inviting those stewards

to attend so that they get a second dose of Youth Equity stewardship because they will be leading that stewardship this year and the students who are in youth Equity stewardship hopefully again we will go through an application process and we'll have another crop of students who can build up the youth Equity stewardship messaging finally this is a bit of a an image that will allow you to kind of understand just in in some easy terminology the work that that we do around Equity work which intersects with social emotional learning and so that intersects also with the work that our child Justice Advocates do as well so that's the end of our slideshow do you have any questions for me I'm going to open it up to my colleagues first do we have any questions I

mean I I think maybe some of my questions I don't know if you could answer all of them just because I'm trying to like line up stuff from the PowerPoint with the proposed contract we've been given from core one um and I know you covered a few things just now in the um things you'd like to take on in year three however I'm having a hard time and I guess maybe it'd be help I understand the situation right now but it would be helpful to understand how these things that are listed out um in the contract line up with the things that you've described in your PowerPoint and I only say that um because it's quite it's quite a bit of money and each item is kind of costly and so I'm just curious you

know also I I would have loved to heard tonight from maybe uh somebody who's been on an equity team or a teacher or a student or somebody who I know I know the yes stuff is going great I just want to hear more about direct um interactions with folks from Corwin if folks feel like the trainings are effective I mean it's a lot of money to vote on and not have a ton of information in that regard is why I'm kind of trying to get my bearings here with like how what you're describing lines up with what we've been proposing a contract because the language or the semantics in their contract isn't doesn't line up with what's in your PowerPoint I'm not saying that's anyone's fault it's I'm just trying to make sense of it

so in terms of the contract do you have any specifics that I might be able to um there's just a ton of work so for example it'll say deep Equity de School leadership team training day coach day on site there's several of those with different dates that are six thousand dollars each then there's yes Workshop on-site EGS Workshop is five thousand dollars those are on different dates I see that there's two facilitators Matthew and Wade um I guess I'm curious this is for like these different events um you know what's the facilitator's role um I also was curious about the art of equity facilitation session I'm just curious how much of a a role the facilitators playing in every single yes Workshop like are those yes workshops with the students are we not at a

point yet we're we're being self-sufficient with yes stuff I guess I'm just curious so the when when the students participate and yes you have Matt and Wade and last year they were working singularly with one one building this year we're doubling them up a bit and so they are the facilitators okay so we're not in a position to be facilitating us on our own so in terms of facilitating yes on our own down the road we have to build that sustainability first and so we have our first group of yes graduates or attendees participants who are now working in in the steward position at their buildings correct and so those students are pulled either from a Class A non-core class or they're doing an elective and so during that period period of time The Advocates

the child Justice Advocates at their buildings are helping facilitate those conversations okay that's kind of what I was asking we're not at a point then to cut to not have someone from Corwin in the room for that or there still has to be someone from Corwin in the room there doesn't have to be someone from Corwin in the room however we have three child Justice Advocates that well there's myself there's Billy and we have one other Advocate at District level so we're available to go in along with them to to take some notes and kind of like pod cycle reflect and offers offer coaching to them gotcha um I'm not like I'm I'm not trying to come out of thin air with anything I know I wasn't here to originally vote on any of this

or the agreement with Corwin and I guess I'll just I like to give some background so people don't think I'm talking out of my behind but when I worked for Portland Public Schools um we adopted courageous conversations around race um while I was there I was at a beacon school it was our job to like be the sphere headers of this I was actually a facilitator on My Equity team and was in charge of like really getting people to buy into this on like a staff level before we even did the work with kids and I hear all your what you're saying about the pushback I can't imagine having to go through that again but um I guess my concern is and I know we had facilitators for certain things at the district level and

PPS is like a huge District but um some of these things where we did initial stuff it just didn't feel like it took as long to get to the point where you know like we were facilitating things ourself and I know things are different I guess my concern is this is 218 thousand dollars we each each specific thing is fairly costly um we have Sr dollars that are about to run out I think our CJs and you are very valuable and any money that I could Shore up anywhere to make sure we have CJs and you and more of them the more I would like to see that and I hear at the same time that the work you're doing is kind of in line with this my concern though is that like it just

and I'm only saying this because I don't have like a it just feels I I just still am looking at this contract and still having a a little bit of a hard time knowing if people feel like that and it's hard to say because you're not complete yet but if people feel like things have been effective yet in the way that they're supposed to be at this point in time in the process I'm not saying that we're there yet right well I think that that people will have varying degrees of understanding and feelings about it this is the opportunity to have that that instruction that support by an expert experts in their field who have done the work in public schools and have have risen to the equity work and so having that type of

coaching and it would be two rounds per building so it's not like we're doing it every single quarter so we have one round in the fall and then we'll have one round in the spring and the goal is to to look at our site Equity teams in a manner in which they can be leading um I think that for that it is new work it's very very personal and because Equity is very personal there are times that people are reluctant to engage or they just they distance themselves but when you have these types of experts that are giving you their profound and research-based feedback and the same with with the types of activities and the uh the manner in which the the information is shared and how it's modeled and how it's practiced that's why

the Pod cycle is huge so certainly so it's the planning piece and really looking for everything that you need in the planning piece and then the observation of the lesson where we have the the facilitator and we have the site Equity team who are facilitating that that particular um training and then the debris allows for more feedback I guess then my question would be what a year and year four and five look like if this is year three what does what is our plan because I I would hate to continue to like then be presented with contracts that are of the same amount that would make me feel like we're not making progress to like being more self-sufficient in the series so I'm curious I know you weren't supposed to present on that tonight but

like kind of in the general ballpark what do the folks at Corwin say about what years four five and six might look like how what does this look like in getting our training wheels off I guess so I haven't had those conversations with Corwin but my expectation would be during this period of time this year that as as the the experts are collaborating and coaching and working with our our site level admin and their Equity teams that there are Advocates that are also around not just the building level Advocate but also Advocates like um like Mr Maine like myself and like Miss Magnus so that we can capture all of that so that we are ready to move forward in the next years okay that's that that is my perspective it may not be what

Corwin's plan is okay but that's my perspective okay just being very transparent I anticipate that this is likely to be our last year working with Corwin as an entity um it is very costly to work with them directly and as Ms McKeever stated we learned a lot from where we were two years ago and we started our relationship with them to where we are now and so we I don't see us bringing another contract like this in I would be surprised if we were in a position to bring a contract like this forward in the future but what we're really trying to do is INS I don't even like the word but to institutionalize some of these practices and structures so the just the equity working group at each campus making sure that that's just

a routine practice it's part of the fabric of every campus the youth Equity stewards that are the student group like that that is is established that it thrives at each campus and that within those groups there are people who have access to these strategies that we've been learning for the last two years and they can replicate them I will say that with youth Equity stewardship as an event you know nobody does that like Wade and Benji but the guitars and the lights and I don't know that we're gonna get to the place where we can replicate that without them but the conversations the kind of writing the exploration of identity and the intersection of the of my identity with others that we absolutely are striving to be able to to sustain thank you and it

is magical if you're able to attend one of the yes events it's phenomenal 10 minutes and you'll be blown away Mrs did you have any questions or comments I'm just from clarifying questions um this training you keep talking about a team of people at the sites so is this not for like all future training or so there's a there are members of the site Equity working group and so you kind of have to recruit and you want to see who you can bring in so you have within your building you have your principal the assistant principal The Advocate and then you pull other staff members into to to raise the voice for others and to also be a participant in the process and so that's your site Equity working group or your site Equity team

and so they meet and then they start to talk about the next steps in terms of what is what is the next presentation what is the next lesson where do we need to go and how do we how do we wrap all this into the concepts that we already have and so we have those folks that are available um but with our transition with staff sometime times that may cause some hiccups in the road but I have a strong feeling that we have many new teachers and seasoned teachers who have been looking for this in a lot of different places and unfortunately it oftentimes just drops off and so we want to continue this work simply because the nature of our community the nature of our of our staff of our students requires it and

our kids are flourishing and it's really important for our adults to be open and able to have conversations and receive to the best of their ability and and it's not always easy because it's very personal so we want we want the adults to be able to be reflective around the conversations that we're having because we do have a very very um we have a very vulnerable population that needs a lot of support and I've seen Equity initiatives go away within one year and this is literally the third year with Corwin and I know that there was work done prior to that and so the the intention is clear and so the intention will push we'll we'll drive our action can I just add one more thing sure um just as you're saying that I was

just making me think um you know and then this is just my personal opinion I think one of the issues I haven't been on the Safety Committee at Phoenix Union and that there's a lot of pushback from teachers and staff about restorative justice there I don't think they did a lot of this same work on the front end and I think me personally I believe that's what caused so much problem with a buy-in was the short of Justice at Phoenix Union people weren't doing Equity work ahead of time and if you haven't done your personal work it ain't gonna work with the kids when you're trying to do it so um I think that us doing all this work on the front end I think it's going to go hand in hand hopefully with the

work that we're hopefully going to do on our uh committee to work on our policies as far as student conduct goes and I I would hope that we can pull you guys in I can't control the committee but I hope there's some way to pull you all into those conversations throughout the end of the school year to get your perspectives on what these policies should look like as well well and to speak to Phoenix Union my understanding was that there was a restorative justice um position that was created and there were a lot of plans that were made but when you share all those plans at the beginning of the year with teachers without their feedback without their input their buy-in that's that's where they kind of they lost certainly and that's not where we

are yeah so we're pretty transparent now I'm I'm hoping yeah that this can all just work cohesively together and kind of transforming how behaviors work in our district well and it's it's and not just for students right it's good for the students it's good for the adults and it change it changes our our relationships within our community in a positive way thank you yeah I have a couple of questions or comments um the first one is it's my understanding that this time around too there's going to be some kind of parent engagement in these Equity can you speak to a little bit of that so that's what the youth Equity stewardship so this year we're going to have um two buildings participating at the same time so we're we've added an intergenerational piece so the

first night we're going to have a celebration and so we're working on making sure that we have access to the gym so that the parents can see what it looks like there but also we can get them in there to have some pizza and have some some drinks and those types of things because we want them to understand what this is all about because from a child's perspective it may not necessarily Encompass all of it but I think that when when we have that opportunity to bring parents to us that's phenomenal and so is it going to cost a lot of money no is it going to take a little time yes but we also know that our parents do care deeply about their kids and I believe that when you speak about equity and

you speak about um about perspective identity culture I think that most parents might be interested if they have the ability to attend and if it's not their parents it can be the big sisters and brothers the aunties the uncles and grandparents as well awesome thank you for clarifying that I think that's a very important piece that we didn't have the last two years that I'm so glad to see this time and also I think when we first adopted this I mean I originally had voted no because I didn't know Benji or Wade um I I kind of share the same sentiment as Miss Gibson McLean I'm not into giving big corporate people all this money and they don't even know the climate of our community or schools Wade is actually a Community member I found

that out later that he lives in the district so um wait in bed G Benji's not from here he's from Seattle but seeing Wade or canned on with these kids it's truly inspirational so I'm not I'm not happy that they're under the umbrella of Corwin However the fact of the work that they've done the last two years and I still think that the pandemic had a lot of pushback you know we had kind of adopted this I believe in 2020 when we first got elected it came up to the board and then all this other stuff happened so I really think that our first year even though it's three years I think we're in year you know two right now because we basically lost that whole year of school and everything so um it's really

and and they're the ones that run it Benji and Wade do Corwin basically they just have that title under them but it's basically Benji and and Wade's thing so it's really amazing and one last question is it's my understanding that we're one of the only districts that are doing this type of work in at least in the county I believe I think it was I don't know if it was the whole state but it was my understanding that this youth Equity work and all this different type of things like ours our district is one of the first ones to do that type of work so in terms of the state I couldn't say I did have a conversation with someone who runs an equity Consortium in Chandler but we didn't get to chat about that

too much but I will say that based on where we are in our country in our neighborhoods this is the optimal time to have these lessons to really have these conversations so that our students are well equipped to to be able to engage in conversations and and collaborate with with students in the classrooms and go to the grocery store and still be able to have that sense of self but also recognize that they can be stewards as well which is being helpful and it's being respectful and it's giving people a leg up and so in a time where we're not seeing a lot of that we have the opportunity to really make such a difference in the lives of our community and most importantly in the lives of our students Madam president if I could

add of course that intergenerational component I think at this point in time is unique to Creighton I'm pretty certain that that was actually developed from the work that Wade and Benji were doing here and the recognition of the need I think in a meeting that several of us were in with Wade we talked about going vertical so you know in like school districts a lot of times we talk about vertical alignment so we're a Ka we work with Phoenix Union we want to make sure what we're doing Ka prepares kids you know for 912 right in this case this is an intergenerational vertical alignment so that way it's not just our students having these experiences these experiences and developing these understandings but that it's also bringing their families to the table with them and so

that's to me knowing this board that's powerful because that's that's the community Spirit and the community building that I've sensed from this board since kind of the beginning of this work and I don't think you can do Equity just in schools I don't think it can be in a vacuum you know you do you do this work in your community and so this extends the work I'll call it and and if there's a copyright to this in the district can earn money I'd like to make sure we capture that but it's you know this work is going from the classroom to the community right so if we can make t-shirts that say yes that would be excellent I love it awesome thank you Mr Man do we have any other questions or comments or discussion

okay hearing none thank you thank you thank you both for coming here tonight and thanks for everything you've done so far I appreciate all your work yes it's it's amazing work and and the kids love it you should see their lights their faces their lights face their faces light up when they're actually engaged in learning and seeing these things I've had an opportunity to pop in and it's it's really great work um with that being said I move the governing board approved the agreement for services and products between Corwin and Creighton Elementary School District for the 23-24 school year second all those in favor aye thank you so much thank you all right that brings us to this um 10A which is this discussion and approval on student outcomes Focus governance framework before we go

into the conversation and ask for the vote um I've been reading this book by Tupac Shakur I'm pretty sure many of you know who he is but he has this poetry book when he was 19 years old he was doing some writing circles with an English literacy teacher and this teacher kept all his poems so they created after he was murdered they created this book of all his original poems right and to think this 19 year old Tupac had some kind of sense of what till this day we're talking about and in one of the front pages I'm just going to read the short excerpt from his poems he says and he dedicates it to our children he says we must support our children in every way we can we must allow our children in

Freedom to express themselves creatively we must praise our children and thank them for their gift of inspiration we must motivate our children spiritually we must challenge our children to a higher level of achievement and we must increase our children's self-confidence and improve their overall quality of life and then after that he says so we say to our children draw pain to write learn acts Inc dance think Express and be free to dream always and then he names all the children in his family I'm assuming they're his cousins brothers sisters and to me that was beautiful right because it kind of ties in into this student outcomes governance framework because we really are putting our students first and their achievement in really believing that our children that we're serving are capable of all that and more

it's just going to take a little bit for us to as adults to change some of our behaviors so we can start seeing those student outcomes and we kind of heard that kind of same talk in lingo of the Corwin Equity work that we're just doing that's kind of embedded so it's kind of all the same language and lingo and if you have guys have an opportunity to read Tupac's poem book I highly recommend it it's called The Flower The Rose That Grew From Concrete which within itself is beautiful um it just has a whole bunch of his beautiful poems um but anyways so with that being said um I will open it up first to Mr Man or anybody else that wants to kind of lead this conversation and then we can go from

there Madam president I'm uh first off thank you for sharing that poem that you were kind enough to share with me I think last year a little bit about the Tupac book and you know um one of the things some people don't know about me is is my backgrounds in English literature and I and we actually had an interesting conversation today in in our um well you know I was like okay I think I think if I were to rap or attempt hip-hop we would clear their own okay you know but um but one of the things that I learned and this actually ties into rap and hip hop hip hop is that creative writing expression is a really powerful way not only to help students get to the core of who they are but

it's also a powerful way to help develop language skills and so you know that that application of language skills is sometimes more powerful than a lot of the rote memorization work that you know tends to be the Mainstay of a lot of language and literacy and so um I just think that's you incredible and Powerful stuff but um and it ties into the the student outcomes governance because they really do have this this critical commitment to our students I'm I'm very excited for the work I think one of the big things um that we need to figure out I'm getting a little bit ahead because I know we haven't voted yet but assuming the board decides to move in this direction as to is to get that professional development moving and so for me it's

less like I don't have any hesitancy I guess I have you know I'm kind of idling and ready to get going and so I'm eager and I just um you know I don't want too much of the year to get away from us before we're able to kind of get this work underway I do believe um deeply in my heart and some of the things I shared during the superintendent's report about the datawise work we are queuing up the work that will help support this work and so you know once we can get this framework established I think that's going to put us in a position to then start connecting some of the pieces that are already underway on their development um you know even even the equity conversation that we just had is a

component of that so there's all these pieces Parts out there being able to bring them together into a holistic whole being able to set measures to that being able to set goals and identify where our progress is um you know we talked it's come up over the years about kpis this is so much more powerful than key performance indicators because this is really ultimately about drilling down to those student outcomes and so um you know I'm happy to to be part of this and I just appreciate um having had the opportunity to become superintendent in a district where this is the direction the board wants to move so no roadblocks just excitement so I'm trying not to push too hard but I'm ready if we have to push start this car I'm ready to get

out and get behind it and start pushing awesome um Miss Gibson McLean or Miss air do you guys have any other questions or comments regarding this governance framework I guess like Jay like I'm ready to get this started like I'm really excited that um we're we're making changes um I've seen a lot of other boards that are very um they're just complacent um and I feel like we are moving in a good direction where we're going to make change and that's what we need to do and we need to be part of um helping our students achieve greater things and that's what teachers do that's what any Educators do principles and I think we need to be part of that so I'm really excited about this as well awesome thank you Miss Harrison Miss Gibson

McLean you know I'm a firm believer in um I guess just believing that the way we always do things isn't the way we have to continue to do them and um and so I'm excited not only for this but like Mr Mann said all the other things that we're doing in the hopes that they come together and that we're able to really make some serious impacts in all different aspects of our district um I guess I did have one question I know Dr Ramos mentioned um like you know this is and this is me harping on the self-sufficient thing again but he mentioned like I I'm not going to be here forever like I do this in like the first year and then you've got to figure it out kind of thing I guess I

just didn't see in in the document or on the agenda like how much does Dr Ramos cost and what are we exactly voting on we approve that tonight as far as money goes so when we approve it it's my understanding that we're just approving the framework and then once the RFQ is processed does it come back to us or how does that work actually cure it without a competitive process and there are not a lot of individuals that perform this work because it did come out of the Council of great City Schools so there's a limited number of people in our initial discussions with Dr Ramos he assured us that it's typically less than ten thousand dollars the first year and then becomes becomes even less as years move on so um my understanding um

less than ten thousand dollars total the first year okay so um so he and keep in mind he's been working with some of our neighboring districts and so last year I believe was the first year in Phoenix Elementary District or Phoenix number one as they prefer and they did not from what my understanding is they did not hit that ten thousand that is correct so our procurement folks have talked to their procurement folks don't see any problems there um and you know it's it's not it's oddly not a very expensive thing and um but I don't think it'll be a one year and done yeah I think what what if I understood correctly the first year is the Intensive portion I know he I just didn't understand I'm sorry no no and I'm I'm not

trying to be critical you know I'm just trying to be it just seemed more like there was a pretty thought out plan about that I'm here and then I'm gone it's it's a weaning process and that's his intent and he doesn't have it he's not coming to you know set up here with us for five or six years it's like most of the work will be done in the first year he'll be here to help us the second year and then by the third year I think it'll be really at a minimum at that point and I was just worried it sounded too good to be true and I was like there's nothing with money on it and I'm waiting for the ball to drop here yeah okay yeah I trust me I am um

having spent time as a CFO I'm highly skeptical of dollars all the time I probably you know Drive some of you crazy when you're like hey we came across this and I'm like what does it cost you know what's the real cost but um this from from all of our research and the conversations we've had in talking to folks have actually been through it it is it is nominal and cost and it and it complies with the requirements we would have for procurement purposes cool awesome well with that being said I mean I don't know my what much more I can say um other than I'm really excited for this this is something that I think we all kind of were thinking about we just didn't know how it looked all in one chunk um

it is going to be a lot of work um it's gonna be a lot of work for us as school board members as well but at the end of the day I I feel like we have a duty to our families their community and our students we knocked on doors told them that we would do what we could do for their best for the kids and this is one of them this is where the real work begins I know next year um we're gonna have some seats open so I'm glad that you know these are recorded So any future person that wants to come and be on our board knows that this is the work that we're going to be doing and it's going to be serious work and if they're gonna be up here

they're gonna have to live up to that expectation of our student outcomes governance framework um Whoever has to communication oh okay perfect so um I'm available that date so would it be okay if um well I'll I'll call the vote first and then I'll ask my second question um since uh there is no more discussion I'm gonna go ahead and call for the vote remove the governing board approve using the student outcomes Focus governance framework second all those in favor I yay so now that it's been approved um would it be okay if we just talk a little bit of what the next steps are yeah I think I think we need to because I think Miss Suarez is antsy because if we don't get those leads locked in we might lose them oh yeah

and I'm Nancy because November 3rd's a little further out than I wanted but it seems to be the soonest we can get to this so I'm available November 3rd and 4th said it's it's not worried about Saturday I already have something on Friday though it's cool even if you miss one of them and if you're there so I really want to be there for both of them well while she's looking at her calendar so this is I I believe this is a thoughts that we have on this is that we go into this two-day training we'll have cabinet and ourselves as a board because I believe it's important to have cabinet on the same vision of this working together and um when Once admin is getting their data we as school board members will probably

do some Community counsel or sign Council meetings and get um Community input on guard rails basically that's what they're called teaching or community on what this framework is letting them know the definitions what this looks like because one of the things that we've come to realize is that the more that you empower the community the more that you educate your community it's harder in case one of us is not here next three four years our superintendent is gone and somebody a whole new board comes up and they say start trying to do all these different things our community already knows what's expected of the governing board which is that student outcomes and the more we communicate that to our community the more they can hold us or any future superintendent or board member accountable to

the work that needs to be done so we will be having a lot of those Community meetings so our community knows what we're doing specifically with the student outcome governance framework so what do you is there literally no other time we can do it Well we'd have to get back to him because he he does he can't we gave him some October dates and the one November date and he said he could do the November date and then the next weekend we run into Veterans Day and then the next one is Thanksgiving and now we're into December was the majority of your cabinet team available for the fourth and fifth third and fourth I mean third and fourth sorry yeah fifth is my dad's birthday I keep thinking he suddenly told me otherwise okay I

have a calendar it's on their calendar I have like several trials coming up but if I have these dates I can tell yeah the trial judge that I can't do this so the sooner I get set the better because then I can have an excuse if I have to try and say it later they're gonna say no and I think we gave updates to Amy Lindsay I don't I don't know about Liz I don't know if I don't know if Lindsay's had a chance to we in but I think Amy did say that she was available if I remember correctly so I just I'm having a really hard time like I've already taken off like five days for you know I just I have such a hard time taking off like I literally amusing all

of my personal days um is he wasn't available for any of the October dates you proposed okay I mean I want to be there it's just it's really hard on I know it's hard on Lindsay and it's hard on myself because we can't take off as easily as thank you and I'm going to let a bunch of kids down if I go on the third I mean if I need to I will but I'm gonna have to make some changes I mean until what time would you be able to probably not until like three most of the day because I'm just wondering if he will need to do like evening on that Friday and then do a longer portion on Saturday rather than have a short thing on Saturday let's stick to those dates and

then we can communicate via email back and forth to see if we can shift something around like time wise but keep those dates and then we'll we'll go from there to try to accommodate Heather does that sound okay probably so we don't have to have to right maybe then do go until five on Saturday so that way it can kind of accommodate okay thank you okay yeah we'll do that and we'll try to figure something out you're welcome okay um oh and then once those site counsel sorry so once that's a council meetings in the community comes we'll come back together admin and the governing board they'll bring us the data and we'll bring what we heard from the community and we'll kind of like work together and hopefully our strategic plan people can be

there too kind of all work together and making sure that everything sounds and looks like what the community wants and it matches the data so I'm really excited all these meetings too will be recorded So if they can't come to person in the study sessions that we're going to have they'll be recorded and yeah we'll get to work so that's exciting and then next we have um our 10B agenda item which is board policy Review Committee of names recommended and discuss possible dates so Madam president members of the board I'm going to go ahead and hand down some sheets here we don't I think we set an aspiration to have all of these for today and I said I'll do my best the one that we are struggling with a little bit as a community

member and it's not because we can't we can get you a dozen community members we there's been concern in the past when those community members have also been staff members so we have a number of Staff members who are also community members that are very interested we've been we've been having a challenge finding every time we find someone we think is a Community member we find out they have a kid in our school so they really kind of fit that family category and so that's been really the biggest challenge so we haven't given up we will definitely find someone to fill that role if anyone is listening right now in your community member that is not a staff member or already a family member of a student we would we would love to have you

join us I definitely obviously know people that I can possibly strong arm into this um just depending on like you know I gotta come to them with more information about maybe once we figure out more about the frequency of meetings or what the commitment will look like because there are a lot of alums that I know that would be good for this but I just need to come with them with more information before I try to get them to do this so hopefully maybe this next conversation will get us a little bit more of that information and that'll that'll Empower a little bit but we're excited about the team that we're presenting we've had a couple of these folks have volunteered to participate we also have several folks that that were asked and the reaction

has been very positive for from those individuals and the pain I got to overhear the conversation with the parent today Dr dupin was kind enough to reach out to a parent who has had did you say four students who have come through Mackin and current one of their students is currently a sixth grader there so and there's somebody who we we're not just looking for a parent we're looking for a parent who definitely will have some opinions and will be not shy in sharing those opinions otherwise you know why put someone on the committee and it sounds like this individual definitely meets those criteria and was very open and welcoming to the participation so that's that's super powerful because that's sometimes a little bit of a a challenge to find because you you want to

make sure you've got someone who's going to be an active participant just for transparency sake it's my understanding this list isn't online right now correct I was just gonna say it out loud since it is something discussing so we have Adriana padako is a principal at Monta Vista Megan Breslin who's a teacher at Mackin James Diaz who's a teacher at Kennedy at Loma Linda and Biltmore prep Alan Hirsch who's a certified coordinator for exceptional student services at the district level Brian kindell who's the assistant principal at Gateway Claudia what about what about interesting okay that was a hard one for me parent at Mackin Adam Valadez who's a sixth grade student at Monte Vista and then Jesse Valenzuela who's a behavior support specialist at Kennedy Alum Linda and then there's just that one yeah vacancy

so those are that's who we're talking about a thank you to Mr Diaz and Mr Hirsch for volunteers yes I mean wow okay I thought we were gonna have to be like begging people so that's exciting um that happened the same night as as we decided to move forward awesome awesome so any more discussions there's a discussion it says here discuss possible dates yeah so I you know I think one of the only other pieces if there's an if we have any you know viability for what we would consider you know I know we have a time frame to backwards engineer from for this this may meeting you know we wanted to be able to not only bring it to the board in early may but then in April I think there was a uh

a Leadership Council a community council that we wanted to get feedback at and so backwards engineering from there um I'm assuming we probably want to get a meeting under our belts in September but clearly the rest of this week and next week are already off the table and we need to give some folks some lead time so I guess the big question is the frequency should it be monthly every other week um my thought was that we would at least set the first one and then and have the committee kind of come to a consensus you're obviously not going to be able to accommodate with eight or nine people everybody's schedule every time but to be able to have them to take some ownership over how frequently they're meeting and and where and when and

all that stuff especially because it's an open meeting and they're the ones having to do the work so I would hate to decide that for them but at least get the first meeting set um I would hope that we are able to communicate how much like that this is a lot going to be quite a bit of work to do and so that it I would imagine that it would likely need to be like an every other week thing for a little while maybe at the end it can be a little less frequent but it feels like that might be the most effective especially because some of those aren't going to happen because of the holidays yeah so so one thing that we might want to do with that first meeting is get it established

maybe before the month is out right because clearly the next couple of weeks are a little challenging but perhaps find a date at the last I don't know if the next the last week of September is is open or not but either that week or the last September I love the concept of consensus in the first meeting for moving forward but we may want a little more time between the first and second meeting than the two weeks just to give people time to digest the policies because I'm assuming in that initial meeting we'll probably need to do an orientation to those policies and then and then have the opportunity to give folks some time to really spend with that and process and then the only other thing I was going to mention was obviously um

if we could get someone maybe an attorney at the first meeting to do a brief overview of some open meeting law stuff but also if we want them to come to this consensus I know it's going to have to work with um maybe Russell or whoever's helping the meeting to like we want to make sure everybody's included in that consensus because I would hate yeah to do something that doesn't work with that especially because there's extra work going into this which I really appreciate yeah thank you thank you yeah because we will actually have several support staff there's someone from Russell's team to assist with the streaming we'll have somebody to be our keeper of all the notes in minutes and then um we'll also need to have someone there to assist with translation so

um it'll there'll be quite a few staff and we want to make certain it would be ideal in my mind to the best of our ability to keep those folks consistent so you know we'll definitely want them to be part I think that's why I've been part of that conversation on consensus so um so the attorney being part of our first meeting May Drive a lot of the scheduling um so perhaps what we could do is um you know hate to create more work for for Miss Suarez but perhaps have her work with Sanchez to see what um evenings that aren't already scheduled for other committee work and board meetings and and other evening activities might be available for her to be there yeah I think if we can't if it's going to be an

issue I think if we could even just request like a one-pager from Jessica that's easy to discuss with people on the committee that I'd hate to have that be the dead and maybe Jessica can send somebody else from her office yeah that's what I was thinking as well so um and you know Hilda is the person who tells me where to begin when to be there so I shouldn't be an issue if held is in charge of it but um certainly she would need to coordinate with USC other ex official members certainly okay so we'll get we'll get that first meeting scheduled and then we'll have and then I'll just say since we're doing next official thing I will make myself as flexible and available as I can if I have to zoom in or

call somebody I don't mind I'll figure it out I don't want to be in the way of anything that helps a ton all right perfect do we have any more discussion all right and that brings us to 11a which is future agenda items Miss Harris any future agenda items Miss Gibson McLean yeah actually something that I've thought about since I ran and we've discussed during the superintendent search and other times is um you know the prospects when I was a student in this District our school and I know things were different 20 30 years ago but the schools were before open enrollment the schools were the centers of our neighborhoods we only have one park in this District our schools were open after hours I was able to go play basketball play on the playground

do whatever until a certain time usually like dusker like when the sun sets and I wasn't the only like plenty of people are taking advantage of that and I feel like if we're able to even figure out how to do that at like one two or three schools I I would love to visit that and and figure out what that would look like or what resources that would take because I think that would um and we talked and I think we both talk you talked about too I think I liked what you talked about as far as like giving even more ownership to community feeling like having ownership over um our schools and so also just more and more opportunities for fellowships and connections and communities so that's something that I'd love to see on

the agenda if we could even just explore what that would look like did you get that Miss Juarez yeah and I have a future agenda item two I would like for us to discuss policy d j e d j e um lately one of my goals um for these next three years is to really learn about procurement learn about our contracts and learn about all that fun stuff and that policy um States something about our wmbe which is the woman in minority business enterprises we have a very vague policy on that so I would like for us to discuss it and have it changed no more future agenda items the only thing I'd say is I've heard my colleague mention the employee handbook many times we're still at the beginning of the school year I

would love to see that on the next or so the very next after that I don't I know the word penultimate I don't know the opposite of that but whatever this one or the next one after that would be yeah and and I'm sorry that's my fault Hilda sent me the the agenda and I didn't fill that out yet but I will do that tonight and I will make sure that that gets put on so we can actually discuss the professional agreement at some point okay all right hearing nothing else I motion I move the governing board adjourn second all those in favor thank you guys buenas noches
