translator in the back if anybody needs translation services they are here available for you guys and that takes us so you move the governing board approve the agenda as presented all those in favor hi hi oh sorry all right no public comments Hilda okay all right and that takes us to our superintendent report well good evening everybody good evening Madam president members of the board uh first of all I would like to say congratulations to Lindsay McCaleb who earned her international certificate for technology and education and is now an official iste certified educator congratulations secondly I would like to complement uh Dina de Milani and Jay Mann for the government Finance Officers Association award uh for a certificate of achievement in excellence and financial reporting at the national level congratulations we recently had Parents night
and they were well attended it was just nice to feel a little bit of normal a little bit of physical presence a little bit of connection and organic engagement I would also like to say we have upcoming our parent teacher conferences coming up soon in October so we're all getting ready for that and looking forward to partnering with our parents um our ASU partnership and Community engagement practice has been recognized uh by the Marylee Fulton education award so our district or department and so specifically they're highlighting the Creighton Academy is that on health hello uh Mr Campos is that you yep thank you and if you can just mute yourself until you speak that would be great thank you okay thank you so uh coming up soon at the guppy Mac meeting the greater Phoenix
metropolitan education Consortium I'll be presenting our model of creative Staffing that we use uh at the Creighton Academy so that we could maximize the teachers that we have that are Master Teachers and people who are growing in to be teachers and then teachers support who are paraprofessionals and simultaneously to that Dr Lugo and Katie Cartier will be giving a very similar presentation at the Phoenix Art Museum to the next education Workforce models for other districts around the state to learn what we're doing so we're very proud of that creative approach to Staffing and I really appreciate it speaking of Staffing the Arizona School Personnel associations report came out and just a couple of stats for you across the state we have 2577 positions still open that's about 27 percent vacancy Statewide average in Creighton we
have 4 four positions open and we're at about one percent so again a congratulations to the whole team for working diligently on that the state report said that 42 percent of the state positions for teachers are filled by those not meeting stand certificate uh requirements or having some sort of alternative and Creighton is at seven percent so 68 percent of our teachers total are um either unfilled positions or filled with alternative cert positions and it the the efforts to make this uh this crisis uh get mitigated is being worked on daily by all of you and so Dr Lugo thank you for your leadership in that area um our sign and stay stipends were received recently so everybody yay you got those good uh and then paper performance will be coming out in October so
good and then we're hoping to bring to the board October 4th a recommendation for staff stipends to continue with our vacancy savings so we look forward to another opportunity to continue to uh keep our people and and recognize them with every dollar we have available um our Junior ambassadors are working hard to prepare for a program to get to go to Costa Rica and to get to go to Washington DC and they have re-engaged with our sister partner schools in China so thank you for all that hard work as we all begin to re-engage worldwide as well and our garden programs are getting ready to gear up as the weather cools so we will have two cycles of gardening and we can even do a presentation on that soon but we're very excited to peep
out the people who have stepped up to work on a gardening curriculum and who are just waiting for mother nature to be a part of that program so thank you that's it thank you so much so we go to caberneting board reports Miss McCaleb we'll start off with you um too much because all because I'll cover things in the law conference agenda item um but just uh celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month uh this Friday Also is Native American day so I look forward to hearing how teachers and classes are celebrating all of those pieces thank you Miss Ayers welcome everyone tonight it's always good to see people I love when schools um I'm looking forward tonight to the presentation I'm looking forward to um starting up school visits again soon I hope for the feels like
the first order is speeding by so I hope we can set those up quickly I did just talk to Dr Lewis today about visiting some staff meetings just to introduce myself and any other board members that want to join me um I wasn't able to attend the kickoff or the cea luncheon at the beginning of the year so I just really would like to come to your staff meeting and meet you all and just um that we board members are here to hear from you guys so um I I met I think it was a teacher of the year last year who had um never um really she came to our chat with the board and she really didn't understand what the board did so I think that's something really important to do so look
I look forward to seeing you guys when I do that soon thank you Mr Campos do you have a board update for us no I just want to say hi to everybody and I think it's our first time that I'm on a on the phone on a meeting it's exciting well I just apologize I I was this morning or this afternoon with with the uh with a dentist and I feel like I'm talking like Daffy Duck so I'd rather use me on the phone but hi to everyone and and I hope that I can be of of help right here thank you Mr Campos um I don't really have much to say either obviously happy Hispanic Heritage Month I know that there's a video going out right now to the Creighton School District did um
with me and just to share a little bit um I am Mexican-American and first generation so our practice in our family is that on the 15th of September we do what's called el grito which I'll know a lot of you are familiarized with it because Creighton School District is actually really good at amplifying that message to the students so I do appreciate that um the gardenings yes are going amazing and my daughter goes to the Korean Academy and we actually already started our gardening group we actually meet Wednesday mornings so that's awesome that um it's going on and also it's awesome that we have staff that are coming in earlier on the days um just to open up the school for us and have that accessible to us so we're really thankful for everybody that
works with us at the crane Academy and also mostly important that nobody really mentioned we have a community council committee coming this Thursday so we would love to invite every single one of you to that that's going to be held at Monte Vista Elementary School I believe it's 5 45 it starts there will be child care for everybody um so I hope all of you guys can join us on that and um next we have the Arizona school boards Association law conference reports Miss McCaleb do you want to go ahead and get us started on that sure um definitely super excited I went to this conference um I enjoy conferences but this one was just especially informative and not just I hate to say but like not just kind of that big level informative but
okay here are things we need to put into practice um I as well as all the board members I know have been following the legislative session this earlier this year very closely um and but as much as you read and as much as you go to you know here to learn more about it um they just did a really good job of breaking things down into okay here's what finally passed um and and here are the implications it has good or bad for school districts and staff um so I went to quite a few sessions um went to one on Capital litigation update free speech and advocacy site councils and committees religion schools Supreme Court cases curriculum review and book Manning um K4 the new K4 discipline requirements Title IX um some things that I
wanted to pull out um a lot of sessions and a lot of talk about the changes to the parental rights statutes and one of the things kind of my ask for the executive team as well as the principals in the site Administration I know we're being very purposeful about this and my school district is really making sure that the teachers are educated on these changes because a lot of them are a clause a four word clause that has been changed and thrown in there um and well I absolutely advocate for parents we also know that we need to advocate for our teachers too and make sure that everyone's aware of the policies and changes and some of them are like I said very minute and some of it's very actionable I had some good conversations
with Dr dupin while we were there about the curriculum and the new requirements for that and posting School library books and notice for parents on those and some of them are very easy black and white like here's what we need to do and here's how we can post on the website and make it available um not necessarily easy there's a process but you know it's pretty clear as to what to do to make sure that we're in compliance but there are other things like they've really expanded on what counts as public records and what can be requested all the way down to notes that are handwritten by a teacher in a meeting that are you know they think for themselves that that's public record still so just really making sure that we're educating all of
our staff um and I know our staff are professional but we just need to make sure that everyone's aware of all the new policies um another one that can be problematic is um additional uh Clauses about surveying students and ensuring that every single student survey we have everybody has access to the questions at least seven days ahead of time and I know that can be cumbersome so just kind of just know staff that's watching out in in the cyber world and staff that are here there are things coming down the pipeline from the state and we absolutely never want to sit here and say let's put 57 more things on your plate but there are pieces that we have to be in compliance with and there are pieces that Dr Lewis and Dr dupin and
and everybody is going to be working to ensure that we are um the other piece some other pieces that are legal and legislative updates um One Piece that's been added we've always had the pledge now there's moment of silence they also introduced a dedicated 911 education day um so those are both good things we also talked about the esa program expansion I'm going to hold my opinions on that um uh one thing that not a lot of people know about is they did make for kindergarten early entry they've made a Statewide assessment for this previously districts have had to come up with their own ways to assess if a kindergartner who didn't turn five before September 1st was ready to start kindergarten they actually have a Statewide assessment for it which I think just in
the vein of like equity and ensuring that all of our districts are on the same page I think that can be a good thing um and it'll be a training and all of those pieces will roll out this year and then it'll be implemented for next school year I also got to participate paint in the delegate assembly which was my first time doing that with asba which was really powerful focusing on okay you know we we spent three days learning about all the legislation that was passed what are our priorities going to be to advocate for our teachers for students for families for legislative sessions next year um so it's a half a day ish long session where we go through previous meetings you heard us all discuss kind of what our priorities are is
a board for the Creighton School District all of those ideas are funneled into districts representatives from districts throughout the entire state and we nitpick all of the language and really focus on what are the messages that we want the people of the Capitol to hear and what are the changes we need to see what are we going to prioritize um and it was just a really even though some of it can be contentious to discuss I felt like it was a really positive unifying experience because you had 50 100 something people in a room and I'd say 99 of everything we were all on the same page like this is what our students need this is what our teachers need we need to be more Equitable we need to provide more Early Childhood we need
to make our schools safer and we need the legislation to back up those things um so it was just I had a really positive experience even though I don't agree with some of the laws that were passed thank you Miss Ayers glad that you spoke about and I don't have so I can speak about um so the first thing I wanted to comment on was um the guest speakers that um started both days were a lot better than last year and a lot more meaningful so judge Hatchet was there and we got to um listen to her stories about how she has advocated for students in her career um and then Robert Kim spoke the second day and um I found him interesting just because he wrote uh he talked about the 10 U.S Supreme
Court cases that like we should all know and since I'm getting my masters right now I was like oh I know that case I know that case so at least I understood that um we also got to watch um half of them half of a movie and you could watch the rest of it later which um I couldn't oh it's on peacock oh good so good I can watch the rest of it so it's called the bad kids it was a Sundance award-winning documentary and it's about um high school students and what happens when regular school just isn't for them and they kind of make their own way and they allow you know they help them but they earn credits like um just on their own pathway um so that was I really like that
one um I went to all six sessions as well I went to criminal law the first one which I think you were there right I was really um way over my head so uh they kind of spoke about stuff that probably lawyers might understand but not myself then I went to the stipends which was really interesting and they talked about um just how we give stipends legally to especially the non-exempt employees and making sure that they're um that you know that they don't work over their 40 hours or if they do then they understand that this is a separate thing so they talked um a lot about those I went to the k34 discipline and I think Lindsay went to that I think Lindsay was there at that one um so as most of you
know we don't suspend kids um now up to age seven or fourth grade um so that was a little I mean that was interesting it's just kind of hard to comprehend um people making these laws and what they what they say about these teacher shortage was one that I was really interested in um and they talked a lot about how we bring people in from other countries and they talked about the J-1 Visa system and how we um how the whole process goes through when they come they um you know have hoes that they're a Visa holder but um we get them through like an another agency and so they're in charge they're like a third party um they can work here for three years but then apply for two more years so I know
that in my district we have about 10 to 15 I think J1 Visa people and I know we do have some here I don't know how many um I went to Title Nine which mostly talked about um sexual harassment policies and the different kind of um roles that people can play and how you have to report things um also learned that we have a district Title IX coordinator because I was there with um Eric and then my favorite thing was we had an activity while we were there and I did it with Eric and by my HR person um and it was it was a really great activity and it was something I think I could do with my kids so I was excited about that to give you a scenario and you get to
talk about it but then they start throwing like wrenches in your scenario and what would you do now um I think that was probably the most engaging one that I had and something that I learned that I could take back into the classroom um besides talking about Title IX and then of course the last one I went to was influencing the outcome of an election just our role as board members and what we can and can't do in the school systems um like making paper copies or giving you know um using like District resources than money or district emails so overall I thought it was a really great day two days I should say two days thank you Dr Lewis I just am blown away by the content and the retention from the first two
reports it mirrors and ricochets everything I would hope to have shared and you did it beautifully I would add some of the most valuable time also spent was in the hallways where conversations occurred especially as it relates to our financial limitations on the aggregate expenditure limit and how it might generate some shared activity so the board will be looking at a resolution later and these are some of the benefits of informally being in person together so that ideas are generated not necessarily because of the content delivery but because of the engagement that you have informally in the hallway so that was also tremendously beneficial as I learned with and from and offered to other districts and other board members thank you um I'm not going to go much more deeper than what everybody was shared
but um I also on the Arizona School Board Association and the Maricopa County director and I'm also the vice president of the Hispanic Native American Indian caucus so at a on an asba point of view it was one of the biggest law conferences that we've had registered and it's throughout the whole state of Arizona so we have rural school districts you know all over the State of Arizona so it was really impactful and great to see empowering to see so many other school board members getting a little bit more involved on what they can bring back to their school districts and advocate for their kids and their staff every district is a little bit different especially you know the Border towns just hearing the stories of other school board members too on how you know
sometimes we say we're we're going this they have buses at four o'clock in the morning that they're busing kids from Mexico to the United States to go to school so this is why networking and and going to these places is really important too just because you get a different scope of what's going on in different districts and meet other people so um my favorite one was the criminal law one session just because I have a lot of legal background so that's why I like that one um and I ended up getting into some kind of discussion with one of the presenters on something but that's one of the things that Arizona School Board Association is an amazing Association to be a part of and that we have their relationship because they're very open to learning
as well when they're you know the main presenters of giving us of certain types of information so that was great hmm all right so now I move the governing board approved kids send agenda items a through H and J I'm pulling I I don't know if anybody else is pulling anything else okay so um I am pulling I which is out of the country trouble to attend the school superintendent senior education officials and administrators delegation to Israel um in November of this year so the only reason why I'm pulling that is that oh yeah oh I'm sorry I forgot about that yeah so I moved okay all those in favor hi yeah she seconded it hi Mr Campos I forgot to think of that okay okay I okay so now sorry about that um so
for I the only reason why I pulled this is that I do believe that um we're in a place right now where student achievement is very low and part of the superintendent's job is focusing on day-to-day operations and to me eight days being in Israel seems doesn't seem prudent at the time especially when it's District funds um 12.50 coming from the district I just don't feel like it's prudent at the moment with everything that's going on I also know that there's some hyper political stuff going on in Israel and it just doesn't seem prudent at the moment for me um I know that having a connection I think Dr Lewis said before that that's how for the junior ambassadors program that's how she was able to bring in um China and bring in Costa Rica
which is a very good opportunity for kids but again that's an opportunity that's sent to the privileged kids like mine that I can afford to send them and pay you know thousands of dollars to send them on these trips so to me um having Community Partnerships that can get our kids to do those things instead of going to Israel and thinking about how we're going to send our kids out there when we have a lot of other things going on in the district would be more impactful and Powerful for me so for now that's why I'm pulling it at and I guess I'll talk to the vote unless there's more discussion on this senior ambassadors I think we really need to ramp up our current Partnerships um and see how we can get more kids
involved in junior ambassadors period because we have a very small percentage of kids who are able to go to those so I think adding yet another one we haven't even discussed this as a word I don't think that's the direction that we we should be going so I think it's it's it's unnecessary right now and and just to clarify for me it's unnecessary that the district is paying for it I will never tell an employee what to do on their personal time with their own finances just coming at a district point of view that's my sentiment is there any other discussion um yeah I I I'm pretty pleased with the fact that uh we have had at least few of our students from our community with that opportunity of of going to those countries both
China and Costa Rica and and even as I didn't have the opportunity to send my kids for different reasons one of them very strongly is the finances but I'm happy that somebody else can do it so uh and if indeed those uh opportunities have opened before our children in in our district because of the job that Dr Luis is doing wow I my point of view and my goal will be uh for for allowing it but uh that's just my my perspective is that the mere fact that I cannot do it and and he's nobody's fault but he's just not in my possibilities will never be a reason for me to take it away from anybody else so that that's just my my opinion thank you Mr Campos go ahead Miss theirs was superintendents that
were invited to this correct yes um and so I take it it was an R to be invited to this deeply so there was not any are there any other Arizona superintendents that are going no so I think part of the job of a superintendent is to build relationships even with other places um and I think this was a great honor to be invited to this and I think 1 250 is a minimal amount um to build those relationships so that's my reason thank you Mrs um I mean I I agree with Miss mcshuffrey I do want to see us and I won't belaborate because it's not part of the agenda item but I do want to see us ramp up our efforts to fundraise or do other things so we can involve students more
um in the Pro in the junior ambassador program in general that means said I don't want to take away the possibility like I I think we can do that and continue to expand I'm part of my passion is really helping kids be Global collaborators and really experience a world outside of their small neighborhood and I I just think this is a really powerful opportunity um and because Dr Lewis is covering all of the travel expenses and we're just paying for registration um I think the amount is fine like we're not looking at tens of thousands of dollars here okay and um so I moved the governing board approved consent agenda item I I taken all those in favor uh Mr Campos hi Miss Ayers hi nay Miss McCaleb aye MS mcshephrey motion passes thank you
and I'll take all the comments so now I move the governing board approved consent agenda item a through h oh perfect so we're done got it uh that goes back to 6A Mackin School update executive team it's almost 100 day this evening she along with students share some progress and Reflections that have been gathered based on the work that occurred during those hundred days and what's been gleaned from the transition from last year I can hear nothing okay I'm on silence right now we're figuring out the computer okay foreign members I'm very excited to be here tonight to make an update about Mackin and we have some guests tonight we have some students we have leil many we have Madeline and we have Axel Lopez here they're going to help me with our presentation so
us to begin with I would like to start with our vision and Mission here alive so we welcome you to American school where we communicate effectively have positive relationships and Achieve academic success and help our students building character also I would like to share the perspective from our students and before I do that I will have um Madeline over here sharing hold on because I want to present a video but I had to do a little movement over here and she will do a brief introduction of this video hello my name is Madeline and I am in sixth grade and my homeroom teacher is as much as I have been in back and for a year and a half I like to be a student at Market because I then move stuff and I can

teachers and harassments for all night somehow they have this kind of the teachers your potential Club the club that I go to every day and it's really fun if you want to do work they help you do homework and after that we can do challenges and we go outside and at the end of it I just wait outside for our parents to come you ready I like making because we get Five Points Elementary and about communicating for an example means that we we had our differences and but yet we have some differences in blindness like Northern and took a big step sat down and talked about our interested like we both again for example and we basically got along we're not creating each other we're not fighting and I think that's really huge step out
send out the words I was gonna say [Music] everybody always get to have some fun sometime around I like doing stuff guy gaming but I shouldn't be nice to me I think I like about magic is that like they help you to understand things okay and what I would like to do now um we're gonna have some Reflections brought up to us by um Leilani many um is ready for us here here our students Reflections Leilani [Music] my name is Leilani I am sixth grade and my homeroom teaches I've been at Macon for six years and student council and I was class Sagittarian third degree Magnum School supports learning by providing safe and fun environment encouraging students to talk about their feelings and making sure students try their best thank you great job thank you
so much um Leilani and also I would like to share something else that we are starting in our school this is um week number two of our 21st century Grant and one of the clubs that we're having is a new club that is calling the mac and Morning Show which is our morning announcements and we have it azso Lopez talking about the morning announcements come over thank you for being here axel my name is also Lopez I'm in seventh grade and my homeroom teacher is Mr Cho I have been a Mackin for eight years and I like making because I have a lot of friends and awesome teachers this year I joined the morning announcements Club I think the club will help me with my confidence and communication skills so much that's all thank you
and now um well I would like to talk about um we heard our students Reflections right now I would like to share my Reflections after almost a whole quarter we have only work in there very intense work and we have only two weeks and a half left and I would like to talk about the priorities that I have identified during this time and supported by my leadership team so I would say the priority number one is being establishing a culture of safety at the school priority number two the Staffing fully and effectively priority number three has been building tissue capacity and priority number four creating Community relationships so regarding a priority number one establishing a culture of safety our area so Focus has been managing student Behavior we had been training our teachers on the
PBIS system We Gather a good group of teachers coming over during the summer we kind of restructure our PBI assistant we created a share Vision creating new agreements to support our middle school students we also started the implementation of the community circles we actually are going to have a training for um all staff tomorrow during staff meeting to for the implementation of the community circles with a with a follow-up this Saturday whereas teachers are going to see down look at all the information create materials create the dialogues and everything create those restorative conversations that have been provided by this child Justice Advocate that we have our school that he's also providing that language the restorative conversations just pulling some small group into the classroom and also having the students using that language to student to
student teacher to student student to teacher a student to the group and that has been very positive in our school but we still have some challenges and some other challenges that we have is the influx of 60 plus students experiencing some chair trauma around homelessness and they have brought to our school some challenging behaviors every day also we have the lack of common language and expectations in middle school and we're working really hard on that so so we can create that common expectation in our Middle School um priority number two is Staffing fully and effectively our area of focus has been establishing a caring adult relationship with our students from the very beginning with our teachers giving the students a structure and those building that relationship and trust and Rapport in the classroom also uh
recruiting and hiring stuff which I'm very excited to announce I received a notification today that um two of our teachers coming with work visas from Mexico were approved we're about like two more weeks and we'll have them over here and there's two more to follow so thank you back to Lugo for your great effort and support recruiting these teachers in Mexico so they're almost here and I'm very excited about it because this is part of um this is going to help us with our challenges which is the next part the part of the challenges are that we have to reorganize our staff to fill unfilled positions and also what we have recruiting and hiring qualified staff as you work you and sharing yourself is kind of it's been difficult for everyone this year our priority
or my priority number three is building teacher capacity in our area of focus has been implementation of the new math program using the new Benchmark system as I yeah diagnostic tool using the istip and student portfolios and the technology integration we um one of the challenges that we had is the the new math program and we are learning the program as we are implementing it the same with the new Benchmark system we're learning the system as we are using it so um I want to show some of the pictures of our professional development and data dialogues we had a series of teach Like A Champion trainings for our teachers that we provided in new teacher orientation and throughout the this five seven weeks that we have been working at school also just this past Wednesday
we did a deep data meeting and dialogues we had those dialogues with our teachers where they were using the data trackers to be able to situate our students regarding their needs and based on that we were able to uh plan and decide our tier one instruction in the classroom based on those data dialogues and also our smooth small targeted groups in the school in the classroom now moving into our priority number four creating Community relationships um our area of focus has been welcoming parents and volunteers to school we know the last year because of the pandemic that was not the case right and this is something new that we're doing opening up to sports events something that I wanted to share in this area is that it was sad for me to see during our
first week our first game because the parents were standing by the fence outside of the school because that was the way it was happening last year and I had to go up to the fences I said the gates are open you can come in Joe join us yes you're part of this I love that yes yes so and we also were able to held our first round of academic parent-teacher teams that was this past Thursday it was an important event that we had and we are also offering our cafecitos for parents we had held two of them where we're teaching our parents how to use and how to go to parent view we're teaching our students our parents how to submit the lunch applications and we're preparing them and guiding them on how to become
Volunteers in our school also well some of the challenges that we have been facing is finding appropriate time to meet with parents has been a little bit difficult to adjust because it used to be online after school we're trying to do it in the morning with students when parents start dropping out their students so school you know so the mass communication system um has now been working properly and it's been a little bit of a challenge for us in that area um and I would like to share some of our players um in the soccer and volleyball team that we're very excited because we won the first game the soccer game and uh very tight on the volleyball um game uh we had guest speakers to middle school and we also had our operations school
bell program bringing supplies and clothes for our students and as I said we just this pastor that we held our first title one in aptt night and this is Mac and up to today thank you um first of all students thank you very much for being here good job to each of you um you should be very proud um I just have a question about this presentation is different than what I see is is that one public or is the one I have public is different yeah there's just more pictures on that one some photographs were added since the apgt night was the day that the agenda went live okay so there's been a couple tweets okay is that on the public board docs or is that just um Miss Ramos's um presentation most likely
it's the presentation that we're viewing though tonight okay but it's not I don't I know I don't have access to it as a board member so I'm guessing the public doesn't either you can make sure that you get access to okay it would just be nice for people to follow who are trying to follow along that's all um this happens a lot so it's confusing because I'm like I I didn't see that line there so I know I know it's we're updating to the very last minute but it makes it really hard um to prepare questions when I don't you know when it's flying by um I like to look at it ahead of time anyways I'm sorry um I heard from several teachers last year that the PBIS at Mackin was broken and that
were there was no there were no Norms or systems set up for it it sounds like that is a priority that you're working on um what types of things are you doing to remedy this you know it was it was that I we there were some mac and teachers and Gateway teachers chatting together and there was obviously a very big disconnect on what the two different PBIS implementations at the two different schools were okay well I know the PBIS program followed the same template and the same expectations and I believe every school adapter to their needs in in their schools so I know I'm not exactly sure how it was last year but I know that the intent this year was to be prepared before the school um years started and that's why we met
during the summer a good group of 15 teachers got together and spent a whole day working on the PBIS system adjusting and creating the reward system and share consequences and recognitions for students creating new agreements technology use agreements uniform use expectations so we were and it was in general consensus that we created the new system or refine the systems that we had and we're working on having consistency across the all the Middle School teachers because we have also new t-shirts and everything should have different beliefs so we have been meeting almost every week going over the different even going to the granular point of creating this common language going to the definition of the behaviors what do you what do you mean when you're saying you're going to give three minutes to start the lesson
or students a three-minute transition from one class to the other this is the three minutes where they do they need to be inside do they need where do they need to be so we have in very detailed with those expectations and middle school mostly because that's one of our major focus focuses for this school year okay good um and and as far as if you are you getting the support that or what kind of supports I guess are you getting from leadership as far as um the PBIS or what kind of supports do you need like from District leadership do you feel like you're getting what you need um or do you or is there more that you need to um well Morris always welcome yeah all right I'm not gonna see no I'm not
gonna say no to that but I have been greatly supported by everyone in the district I'm actually very grateful for that Dr dupin has been there in my corner all the time ready to listen Give opinions and support with parents and students also my leadership team that is right behind me my assistant principal my instructional coaches my effective School coaches everyone has been very supportive what I have asked Dr dupin is to kind of um get like a little of introduction of something that was good we're going to be having in November is the the equities stewardship program that is scheduled to be there with sixth grade in November so we my request to Dr Luke dupen was to see if we can have like an introduction um before the end of this quarter so
we can have these conversations and discussions and having this understand standing of the expectations and being respectful using this restorative conversations um trying to think on equity and and the gaps that we have in the community uniform our students beliefs and and understanding of behaviors and culture and the school so we are we have been receiving all that support okay and I know that it's in progress thank you so much for asking that um last year also I heard a lot about students going into isolation rooms is that still a practice I know there's like students being isolated if there are disruptive right but being in isolation rooms for like an extended period of time or days and it wasn't really a suspension and parents weren't necessarily notified is that a practice that's going on
absolutely not no we don't have isolation rooms I'm sorry if that happened I never heard of anything like that in our policies to communicate with parents immediately or as soon as possible whenever any of the con of the behaviors have been observed and we are investigating we contact parents directly yeah and then you also just said um your mass communication system isn't working properly what is that the mass communication system is the robocall system in the text message system that they have been updating I think I believe because there is a new program the platform that we're using it hasn't been working properly also okay so we'll hope that remedy yeah and I know um Emmy wasseling has been working really hard on that and she's been very supportive because I always communicate with her
but it before like prior years the school could do it directly and we can do as many Robo course as we can and now we just have to going to um to Emily so she can help us but she has done that too okay great and then um what are you doing to find um appropriate or convenient times to get with parents because I know cafes you can offer them but not everyone can make them at certain times are you offering them um at different times of the day or what types of things are you trying we're trying we try refers to and we try to do it in person in the morning and the first one wasn't the best the second one was better and we're just because we this is a new change
last last year we didn't do it that way so we just want to bring the awareness to the parents and getting it out for them to email Facebook Flyers with the students and I have other ideas of things that we can do like offering prizes to the classes with parents attending uh the events and all all kind of different incentives and also try different schedule I know we're not opposed what we want to make it work great thank you for our parents in person or online whatever works best we're just trying different options right now thank you and thank you so much for going and getting the parents out from behind the gate I'm shocked that they were still behind the gate I was hoping that that we would have stopped that towards the end
of last year so thank you very much for doing that thank you Miss mcsheffery do we have any other questions or comments yes I have uh some comments uh um number one uh thank you for for everyone that presented and always especially to the kids but uh to you right now on the produce I just want to tell you that I'm I'm very uh uh pleased with everything and I have three things number one uh you're a problem solver I like it there's always uh I can see that you you find a way to to uh to face situations and and just approach them and go at them and and uh for example that uh bringing T-shirts from Mexico that that's that just amazed me and from then I just keep listening to to a
different problem being solved so I thank you for for using that secondly uh you care for the people in different ways you mentioned it but I'm one parent that uh that was used to screaming my lungs and my heart are my children when they were in the sports at school and you notice that the parents were on the other side of the fence so thank you for that thank you for caring and the last one is uh uh when I hear that in everything you've been accomplishing a victory you mentioned that you get the support from everyone and I think that's because you are a humble person and you know how to work uh on teamwork so just thank you again and and congratulations and it's all good news to me tonight thank you so
much upstairs hi hi students you guys did a great job tonight thank you for coming it's always great to see students um share with us what's going on after school so thank you for I really appreciate the videos you could see that they were really authentic um because the kids have made me crack up a lot so that's fun because you know it wasn't a show um I know it's hard I'm sure to come into a new school that already has problems so I know it's going to take some time to get in there and change things the way that you want to change them [Music] um I hope next year I'm kind of in the same situation as you being a new principal I hope that I get that um in my district and
I hope that um I can do some of the things that you are doing um it looks like you're making some really great changes um and I really appreciate seeing things that are going on well and I also do appreciate seeing places where you're struggling because sometimes we know things are going on at schools and sometimes we want to look at all the pretty pictures but we know that pretty pictures of usually what's happening in schools there's always something that we can improve upon or something we struggle with so I appreciate you bringing that to us thank you thank you so much thank you guys you guys did awesome you should be proud of yourselves and proud to the parents that have these wonderful human beings thank you I have one follow-up question I'm sorry
um are you fully staffed now then or how how many teachers are you still missing we um almost fully stuff one position but we're about to have that person is working on his certificate he um is probably going to start next week but we have yeah okay yeah thank you um and I just want to Echo a lot of what everyone else said I know like what week seven in um so I'm sure you feel like I do or it's like we're barely into the school year but oh my gosh we packed so much in um and I just I really appreciate you know it was very clear you're uh as necessary said you know there are challenges um but it's very clear that you're setting those expectations I'm pleased to hear um very critical
eye of looking at like not just we're doing PBIS but we're really embracing this and being very systematic about it and that came across very clearly um uh also you know going back to some of the basics the teach Like A Champion strategies um and and making sure that your staff had that before the school year started I think is huge too um I think we tend to put a lot of kind of like we pile a ton on teachers for the school year but it's not necessarily the what do they need day one um and it sounds like you were very intentional about providing those supports and continuing to provide them um so and I'm excited to hear again just to reiterate being active with those parents um so just thank you for all
that you're doing and thank you students you guys did a wonderful job and we love hearing from you thank you so much something I would like just to share um and because of comment on Mr campus regarding those teachers coming from Mexico I am one of them too that came to Creighton 25 years ago under the work visa in came today awesome awesome wow the Wonder thank you thank you while we transition I'd like to just point out that the student artwork on display is also from back in school this week oh okay awesome in just a brief explanation about the ER that is posted back there um our art teacher had a project to come up to bring our mission um alive and she asked the project was to reflect on the moments were
a student spell happy in the school using the silhouette technique that's awesome thank you thank you all right that brings us to review Title IX policy and regulations thank you madam president good evening thanks once again just take one moment to get transition and I'll welcome to the podium three of our experienced and Veteran and wise coach leaders and Mr Breezy who coordinates of our Athletics program good evening members of the board thank you for having us I'm coach Sims I'm coach Sims hold on just one sec you look like you're ready to Dive Right In the Jeopardy music foreign thank you for your patience all right this evening we're here to discuss Title IX and its implications here in the district relative to our policies and practices this evening we have Coach Vicki Sims
who is at Kennedy at Loma Linda coach Asher Hall from Papago School coach Tim Kanor who is at Papago School as well and Josh Breezy assistant principal at Kennedy at Loma Linda as I mentioned before he does really work heavily with the assistant principles to coordinate all the work of our Athletics program so this is the Dream Team right here and of course they're supported by a host of other coaches assistants who work to make our Athletics program what it is uh just to point out Madam president members of the board some of the slides here were added today uh we happen to be at the ASA principles and the law conference and attended a session on Title IX so we pulled in a couple of the relevant slides for clarity that just speak directly
from you know recent legislation and its impact on our work well this is one of those slides summary of the main federal statute under Title IX Title IX is extremely broad it was expanded especially in 2020 having to do a lot with sexual harassment and how sexual harassment is handled in schools both for adults and children but it also in most historically relates to women in athletics so just to summarize briefly uh no person in the United States shall on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in uh or have discrimination about academic or educational programming from any institution that receives federal assistance with regard to Athletics regulations do allow for separate teams based on sex where selection for such teams is based on competitive skills or the activities of contact sport so it
is still legal under Title IX to have that separation um as well as some other practices in Arizona there is a new law that is about to take effect we did learn about this we followed it throughout the legislative session it was heavily a conference that you all spoke about this year schools will be required to assign students to teams based on their biological sense and what that will require is that teams will have to be designated as either for boys or for girls or they can be co-ed teams that are designated as being four boys will be for boys but girls can play on boys teams if they try out and are selected girls teams will only be for people who are biologically seen this is a this is a a new state statute
I have a question so if we kept the co-ed we're not in violation of any and it doesn't go into that whole mess of a girl has to be biologically a girl correct that is correct and that was actually one of the reasons why started allowing people of any gender to participate on our sports teams this law kind of cements it but we would need one thank you for the question Madam president members of the board here in Creighton we have a number of policies that are informed by Title IX some directly some indirectly a couple of these jjia and jjib were in the packet of bursary policy updates uh that were reviewed earlier they have they've been directly revised to be in compliance with that change to the law relative to uh labeling of
Athletics teams um just a summary our our board has made commitments historically to equity in sport some of those are that we are committed to a policy of non-discrimination in relation to race color gender religion sex age national origin we believe in fostering the safe educational environment in which every student has equal access to all school programs and activities and the third one the right of students to participate in extracurricular activities shall be dependent upon only they're maintaining the minimum academic and behavioral standards established by the board and their individual abilities so our current practices as of right now we really had to kind of rebuild Creighton Athletics after the pandemic because we had a couple years where we couldn't have the kind of splits programs and participation that we would like and my perspective
is and the coaches will speak to this we're still in that rebuild um but our competitive Athletics are open to all our kids in six eight we do make occasional exceptions for fifth graders sometimes we have kids who just want to or there's enough and we try to make that possible teams have been open to both boys and girls with the exception of basketball we do have separate teams for both in that case in our current Sports include volleyball soccer basketball softball flag football and cheerleading cheerleading does exist at some of the campuses but not all just to be cleared up um there was a request to look at participation in Prior years based on gender we have not had a historical practice in the district of archiving participation data at the district level we
did start using register my athlete it is now called activate the K last year we've had some inconsistent implementation or use of register my athlete it's an online platform where parents can go to sign their kids up for sports so last year in going to the data 103 athletes were registered through to register my app that was not all the kids who played that was the 103 who used the online system most of the athletes used the paper pencil sign up of those 103 60 of them happen to be girls 43 of them happened to be boys this year we are pushing for much more consistent use of the online portal for athlete registration it helps organize all the forms and ensures that we're able to pull data like this um all our students who
registered online selected a sport that was traditionally aligned to their identified so they like all the people who signed up for boys basketball happened to be we call it boys basketball it is listed as boys basketball in the system I don't know do parents see it labeled that way when they go in to sign up but volleyball football Michael um so as I said but we don't archive the paper and pencil registrations at the district level and we're moving to more greater Fidelity of use of uh activate for the current season I have a question if we moved every other sport to co-ed why did basketball stay as boys and girls does anybody know that because it's a that's a good point so we're a member of idac which is a what's it stand for
inter-district athletic Consortium um yeah some of our Sports have been changed because of idex so um idac is a intra intra-district um basically it's four school districts that we participate with um end of season tournaments so we extend our soccer and volleyball tournament the top two teams from our district get to go and compete at that idac tournament so we changed our schedules probably about seven years ago to join idac so that our Sports align with the other districts that are also in idac but I think that's why it's because um I actually don't really have an answer for why we have separate for basketball but it's always been that way since I've been in the district and approximately how many kids are on each of those teams like how many girls basketball players on
a team how many boys basketball players on a team from our district or on from Ours from ours so what um we can go back to the other side there uh this is pretty typical of what we're seeing right now for um all the years that we have had Sports we started the co-ed which we haven't labeled it that um about seven or eight years ago and so you're seeing right there soccer this is pretty typical of what we see for a soccer season there's usually a handful of girls mostly boys right correct so um Biltmore has four girls on their team and 13 boys this year um and then our next slide there's going to be uh volleyball and typically we see a few more boys but this is pretty common we see anywhere
from one to three boys on the uh on the volleyball teams and go ahead like my question is I mean I guess so it sounds like you have more participation in basketball too well for basketball it's you're going to be anywhere from about 12 to 18 players okay and so it's going to be 12 to 18 boys on the boys right yes okay so there seem to be enough kids for participation there generally are enough students or athletes but sometimes we do struggle to get kids to play so as Dr dupin was saying um for example right now at uh TCA they're just getting started so awesome TC uh to having a new team this year is awesome and they've been uh super excited but we didn't have enough players to have a full set
so we allowed some fifth graders to play so that they could participate in the in sports this year but sometimes we do struggle to get place to play and I know like at Biltmore we had the same problem because it was a growing school so um we lost kids because we didn't have cheerleading and we didn't have football right but we're growing that program yeah we got there eventually yeah so while schools are growing it would be nice to maybe think about combining or like you said maybe fifth grade that's the answer but um a way to make it possible because these these these teams do need to grow with the school you know it's a it's a draw for parents and it's we're it's not fair to the kids who are there who can't
participate in the sport just because of that and you know because of like numbers and not having yeah right yep um I just uh another point on this slide if we look at numbers for the spring season when we're playing football and um softball you're going to see about the same numbers as you do here for the um volleyball and soccer the soccer and volleyball are are so how does that work for football and softball um there's much more many more boys on the soccer team yeah and there's many more girls on the volleyball so you're typically going to see more boys on the football team with a few girls joining and then uh on softball you're gonna see more girls and a couple boys joining so in preparation for our discussion this evening coaches
brought forward a number of the challenges and opportunities related to creating an equitable and fun and interesting sports program and got some bullets to refer to but they're just going to speak from the heart and bring forward starting with Coach Sims their ideas thank you members of the board for entrusting me with my insight and opinion on Title IX I understand the law was made not to discriminate against anyone based on their sex there are two sports in our district that are especially challenging girls volleyball and girls softball girls have always been able to try out for the football teams and the soccer teams and there have been no issues that makes sense because it is indisputable that many males are biologically faster and stronger than many females so if girls made the team they
were usually exceptional athletes we all want to talk about equality but the fact is boys and girls are not equal physically that being said let's address the pros and cons of boys playing on the girls volleyball and well we're not saying girls anymore but volleyball and softball teams in our district the first negative thing is that fewer girls will get the training and experience that they would need to continue the sport in high school and Beyond if they so choose Scholastic athletic career had the team's been co-ed half the girls I played with would not have had the opportunity to have that experience I may not have been on those teams quite frankly Sports saved my life prior to being put in foster homes in in a time at home I was very wild um
I was running around the neighborhood with no supervision and to be honest I was a little bully getting into junior high my PE teachers and coaches encouraged me to participate in after school sports has absolutely changed my life in an extremely positive way this is why this topic is very important to me my life has come full circle and I'm blessed to have that same opportunity to hopefully impact our students in that way my next concern is safety boys have a physical advantage over girls and with hits throws in softball or spikes and serves in volleyball a girl may not be able to handle the speed and strength and force behind a ball coming from a male in baseball the distance from home base to third base is 127 feet on a softball field it
is 60 feet less than half the distance the softball pitcher is 43 feet away from the home base A-line drive or solid straight hit from a male could seriously injury female there is also the concern of boys sliding into a girl infielder my concern is that girls could potentially get seriously hurt in these sports with boys playing against them lastly Equity can be a problem teams with more boys can have an unfair advantage over teams with less boys or no boys this has been a growing problem and is why this topic is very important and we should look at both sides so that brings me to the positive sides of having boys on these teams with high school offering boys volleyball and boys baseball being a middle school school uh or sorry team will get
them the training experience that they would need to continue the sport in high school we are a learning league and it is very important to me to get them that training as well secondly it gives boys more choices to play after school sports especially if they are not interested in football or soccer lastly having after school sports positively impacts Behavior gives guidance and molds young students in a positive way and I am living proof of that what can be the solutions to this problem an ideal solution would be to find funding to offer boys baseball and and boys volleyball when I was in junior high there was a baseball and softball team I know this is thinking outside of the box in a stretch but it would solve all differences the other solution is the
one that has strong opinions from both sides of the topic several coaches that I've talked to believe biological boys regardless of how they identify should not be allowed on girls teams at all I strongly feel that way for high school and college but I am Pro Sports and really want our boys to get the training and development interest to continue on with Esports in high school and possibly College here are my ideas for the board to consider if you choose to keep boys playing in in volleyball and softball we really aren't calling it girls volleyball or boys softball but we need to actually advertise it as co-ed hmm and use co-ed rules co-ed volleyball cannot have more than three boys on the court at a time so it would be three boys and three girls
in softball no boy can be a pitcher sapla is underhand pitching and baseball is overhand they are completely different skills a boy would not need that training for high school as mentioned before with a boy's physical advantage that would make it more difficult for a female to hit a pitch coming from a male it would also give a completely unfair advantage to the team with a male pitcher being co-ed in soft bothers should be no more than four boys playing at a time and only two in the infield and two in the Outfield I say this because if you have four boys on the infield you're talking first base second base third base and shortstop that would not give any girl the opportunity to be an infielder and would be more difficult for girls to
get on base with the infielders all being boys coaches that I have talked to believe there should be no more than two boys playing at a time and they shouldn't be a pitcher or a catcher but if you are going to make a co-ed it should be four boys and four girls in closing this is truly a catch-22 for me I really really want to get the boys training experience playing these Sports to possibly continue on to high school and even College I want the same for girls but going to co-ed cuts the playing field in half for them I had a full ride scholarship at NAU playing softball and can honestly tell you I wouldn't be here tonight in front of you had it not been for that thank you all that um so
I'm I'll bring just kind of a little perspective with with the current season that's happening and um it's hard for me because you know I've been such a proponent of uh the equity and females and we had a game recently where we were we were losing it was 22 to 12 and I uh looked at the bench and I subbed in a boy to serve and he ended up serving like 12 straight points and we ended up winning the game and the whole time I'm thinking oh my gosh like I just subbed in a boy to win the game and I did it um and then another game that we had this season we were playing excellencia they were losing and they ended up playing the last the remaining two games with four boys on
the court the entire time and then you're looking over at the bench and you're seeing all these girls who are not able to play so it's happening um it it happens I'm guilty of it as well where uh In the Heat of the Moment when you're losing and you're looking at your bench uh we're you know I don't think we're being as Equitable as possible so um if we're in favor of co-ed because it sort of eliminates some of the messes we just have to be really cautious about regulating and putting in um putting in those those policies so that we keep it Equitable throughout so um those are just kind of my two cents low board members my name is Asher Hall and I've been coaching at Papago School about I believe 12 Years
a coach include the angel compost is still been including his daughter who's been on my soccer team I've traditionally coached the boys team I've always had an open policy where whoever tries out is welcome to try out if you're good enough to make the team you're good enough to make the team uh one of my big issues with Title IX and with this is the equity issue if we just look at based on the um numbers of the traditional sports right now we have soccer has 11 players on the field football has nine and basketball has five that's a total of 25 I believe 25 25 starting positions four boys if you flip that around and look at the girls traditional girls Sports softball has nine volleyball has six and basketball has five so that
leads to the 20. so if we do go to a co-ed thing you're cut even even if you're just staying at that the opportunities for girls right now is already inequitable and when you go to co-ed you're cutting that number even further down at starting position if we as a district want to go to co-ed it needs to be a full co-ed we need to say for all Six Forks we're going to have co-ed rules we're going to basketball can be separate if it wants to but for the other four we need to have soccer we need to have six boys on the field but no more than six boys on the field five girls on the field football is the same thing we're having equal amount of boys equal amount of girls for volleyball
Eagle amount of girls equal amount of boys not just calling it co-ed and oh we let boys be on the team oh we let girls be on the team but truly be co-ed and again talking about passive princes I I grew up in Alaska and I was on the volleyball team in middle school and it was a true co-ed team we had three boys and three girls on the field on the on the court at all times and that's when we played against other teams that's what it was it wasn't oh we're gonna put in our four best boys and against two girls no it was always three boys three girls so if we are going to go to a truly co-ed model we need to regulate it needs to be for All Sports because
because again when we start picking and choosing which ones are co-ed that does start taking away opportunities for females and in this district with our population of kids females aren't always necessarily encouraged to do sports to do athletics and I feel that taking that away from them really discourages them thank you okay thank you coaches so we have some possible outcomes to look at so we could establish both girls and boys teams for All Sports um and that would be kind of bringing us back to where we were before um One Challenge with this funding would be a challenge but being able to offer those for All Sports um Title IX doesn't require that we do that um that would be like the dream if we could um have enough coaches and athletes and players
to do that um another possibility we could renorm around the traditional gender classifications for sports so that would look like um keeping for example soccer and football are traditionally the boys sports but then girls would also be allowed to try out for those Sports and then we would go to volleyball softball would be only girls and boys would not be able to play for the for those sports teams or another possible outcome would be formalizing the co-ed sports that you've heard about tonight with specific rules to make sure that we're maximizing competition and time on field thank you so much I'm going to start off with the question how long have we had co-ed Sports in the school district um unofficially I believe it's about seven or eight years it may even go beyond I
remember being a principal in the district when we kind of some some case where a boy wanted to play I think volleyball and was denied because it was a girl's sport and so there was a discussion about it I mean this goes back probably a decade or more and so at that time then there were some allowances made but it wasn't widespread it's just grown a lot in the last seven years okay um my sentiment behind this is that we should have I I would hate for us to go away from coed Sports um I think because of what the legislator has done to us and how our hands are tied we are going to end up discriminated against somebody a child who identifies or sees themselves as something else and because of what the
legislator has done to us there's nothing that we can do so my personal sentiment is that we do not do boy and girl sports but I do believe that if we are going to have co-ed Sports they all need to be across the board and they do need to have some kind of you know specific rules or something to give everybody a fair a fair shot and you know whoever the stronger may win in sports I played soccer for 13 years you know I'm trying to think and I've done co-ed and I've done it and when we did co-ed especially in the profession you know the most competitive leagues when I did co-ed we we did have very defined rules because we knew that sometimes you know we had stronger men on the team so
my personal sentiment is that we don't move away from the co-eds but we do need to formalize them just because um our hands are tight and our policy and ACB and JB specifically states that we would never do anything to a child that you know just because our biological is something and they're saying something else so I think that would be the most appropriate thing to do to align what the board has already decided um in the past um first of all thank you for sharing your stories and especially Miss Sims I appreciate it sounds like very emotional and I appreciate it so much you being honest with us about how important it's been for you so you know I couldn't I I couldn't follow all the recommendations you were giving as you were going
um but I think you guys are the experts here in Creighton specifically um and I think there's you know it's hard I would hate for us to give up a boys and girls basketball teams and then not be able for them to participate in the tournaments that's the only issue I have um I think for middle school as long as there are opportunities for kids to play sports um I feel like we could still have a boys and girls team for basketball um even for volleyball you know because that's such a it's that's if it's There's an opportunity for a girls volleyball team to play in a tournament that could be really great for our kids so I feel like maybe you guys can come back with some really specific recommendations again um and if
so we haven't been following the co-ed rules yeah okay so that we definitely need to be doing that for our for the teams that are co-ed you know um but I I'd hate to lose the boys and girls basketball teams and and not give them the opportunity to play in a tournament because as they go into high school there's going to be boys and girls teams you know it's Michaela I think one yes just to Echo appreciation for sharing your stories um and and sharing both sides because as um Miss Korea doll shared like and you said it's a catch-22. um I am absolutely feminist as well and I'm like yes we need more opportunities for girls we don't want our girls to get hurt um but I am also about inclusivity and I the
new legislation just I don't really have professional words about it um but I I don't want uh I see both sides but I really really really don't want us if we go to boys and girls teams only you're going to have students that don't feel like they belong and that's just how it is and and we can do everything we can with what we say and how we present it in the culture we build to ensure them that they do belong but the reality is they're going to be forced into their biological gender surrounded by kids of that biological gender when they don't identify with that um and that goes directly against our policies that we've adopted and a lot of our sentiments um not just here on the board but I know you know
our staff and who we are um and I I guess in the ideal world it would be like let's have enough coaches and players that we could have a boys basketball girls basketball and a co-ed basketball and then this wouldn't be an issue um and I know that that is probably very unrealistic um I guess following up on that just because I don't know um if we are have formalized co-ed Sports across the board does that prevent us from any type of tournaments or competitions outside of our district are there opportunities for those because they don't want to lose that either you know and we have our foot in both camps yeah we for idac we participate in the uh the fall and the winter sports so that's going to be the soccer volleyball and
basketball um all the other districts that we participate with are in alignment with what we're doing for the co-ed teams um and then uh the two districts that um in the spring Sports which would be Alhambra and Isaac um they they have a fast pitch baseball um and uh I think they do tackle football so uh Phoenix L and and Creighton don't participate with the idac tournaments for those sports but everyone else is in alignment so Phoenix L their sports program is basically the same as ours as far as how we're running the the co-ed teams um and then Alhambra and Isaac are mixed depending on the sport so we would still be in tournaments um as we stand find co-ed for all of our Sports we would still be able to have that experience
I'm going to assume so the idac tournament um that Consortium there we haven't discussed this yet with the new legislation so I don't know how that's going to affect idac but I have a feeling we're going to keep things away that they're going right now so we shouldn't if we keep things away we're we're moving we should still be able to participate with by that something to say yeah yeah as as much as I am in favor of uh protecting everybody's rights and and against anybody being discriminated uh I I also have my my children enjoy sports and I never seen in the years that I've seen them participate Chris Rebecca three Ephraim three uh David and nice like a couple of them they always seem to understand how things are going I think we're
in the level of laws and trying to win over certain things we're bringing some type of chaos into that what what it is what it is and and that gets enjoy for example soccer my uh I was listening to to uh to my friend Sophia my name can she play with the boys and she sometimes she got hit and and she would just stand up back up and say let's keep on playing and and of course when when some sometimes she got hit by a geek from from a ball from a boy and that's a big difference and and she wanted to continue playing and and I supported her now when when they go to high school is different when they go to high school they are uh aiming and focusing on on on let's
say even better players that have a not only playing because they like the sport but they have a special abilities and they're pointing towards the future in the sports so uh uh I personally uh believe that that we should abide and respect and and but more than anything more than anything if if by trying to be supportive to one side or the other we want to be obstacleizing the the kids from from from enjoying the sports which is something uh great is so much of a greatness for them to to be able to to to to uh not only go and learn about mathematics but also enjoy the the sociality of sports I I think we can fall into a mistake trying to fix something we want to make something worse so just uh uh
I'm I'm here for anything that comes up as a boat or whatever or continues discussing but uh my point of view is that sometimes trying to defend something we are doing the wrong decision and and I I really love the the the how or the causes and our schools are are leading the sports right now and if anything needs to be changed because it has to be changed well so be it but but if what we're doing is is correct so far it has worked and we haven't had any issues at all I I think we we can uh continue as we are but that's just my opinion thank you Mr Campos Mrs so I don't have a lot more to add um to the ladies but I want to thank you for just making
me think um different way like to ponder different things I'm I'm very thoughtful about things and um so you offered a different point of view um and I guess my question was do the other districts are they like looking at kind of making the same rules or would this just be rules uh thank you for the question um one of the uh I asked that question today at the law conference and as far as we know there's not any uh legislation that dictates what those co-ed rules look like um so I would think we would want to come up with some and then also check in with idac with those school districts to make sure that we're all in alignment would probably be a an outcome that we could look at I think I mean
I think that would be good I wish it in my district but um that would be amazing if we all just had like the same and then it would be understood I've been coaching the boys team for the last 12 years and we've gone to the idac tournament for basketball and all of a sudden you know we've been playing one way all season until we get to the tournament it's like oh you can't do that and it's like why have we not been playing by the same move the whole time so if whatever we go to i i whatever we decide whatever ideac of the group decides we should everybody should be playing by the same set of rules it's going to be oh this is Creighton rules and then when we get to idac
we're doing something different it should all be the same so maybe this is something that we talked with the other District in determining what we want to do with sports and and gender and you know just work together to be one big group instead of we're gonna do this because then you're right it does take away that opportunity if we make this decision that we're going the two co-ed where we go you have to have for soccer you have to have five and six on the field and we've been playing that way all season and then we get to the postseason tournament and the co-ed teams mean they have 11 started on you'll then have one or two girls on the bench that never get in like that's not fair to our kid that's why
I think like we I think we need to make this it would be just guidance is over here it's just you either stay with what we've been doing and you know oh we're working with poet but we're we'll be co-ed we just have girls on the team and and or we go to we're going to do co-ed and we're going to have happen players on the field our boys half the players on the field about girls and it's not necessarily just made up of who makes a team but who's actually playing yeah I don't like the way we've been doing it because obviously that's not getting us the equity that we desire this legislation has thrown a loop into this so I think getting guidance from idac would be a really great Next Step yeah
because everyone's in the same boat now unfortunately yeah and I think yeah like you said if we can continue what we're doing we're not actually doing co-ed and so we're not solving some of the issues that coach Sims brought up um and Mr Kenora brought up you know about our females not having those opportunities now so um I definitely agree with you I think you know we have 14 theater districts and a Phoenix Union we collaborate on just about everything else um this seems like of the utmost importance and I don't know um Dr Lewis if you can help facilitate that with other superintendents to connect all the coaches I think that's a huge party because I I agree like we want to do what's right but there are rights on all aspects of this
but we also want to make sure that we're not removing opportunities kind of going to Mr campos's point we don't want to do something with unintended consequences that are not good so um I would like to see more collaboration and be interested to hear what the other districts where they're moving I'll just say this has been such a helpful conversation thank you Miss Mick Shepherd for putting it on the agenda and thank you coaches for the layers of perspective thank you so very much I will work with the Phoenix um collaborative and see what we can do to align to the idac and the whatever uh sway of the various comments we received tonight to to listen and move forward as you direct I think you really are the team to help guide and direct
this based on the comments you heard tonight great job and I like that like to that point um like bringing it up with other superintendents but making sure they said like you send them and they send their people you know but it's not just super instead superintendents making those decisions I think these guys stories need to be the voices need to be there 100 yeah thank you guys so much and I think overall our sentiments it's that coed needs to stay it just needs to be a little bit more specified and redefined so thank you for that thank you guys thank you all all right that brings us to our next item Papago School possible renaming updated policy reference FF good evening Madam president members of the board and executive team thank you for inviting
me tonight to um examine and explore the name of our school I'm here to provide you with an update on our school name examination and exploration process and some things that have surfaced in that examination are the words that are on the screen these are the theme words I would say have that ever really come to the surface but honoring um the town of the people and who were formerly known as Papago for us to spend time learning respecting having some curiosity about where the name came from what it really meant what it what it means now and how it's perceived and then also potential harm that may have been done one other piece I'd like to add is just the map so like just give you a little frame of reference of where the
Tana Autumn nation is in Arizona it also it's in the southern part just west of Tucson but also extends into current Mexico as well so here is the update what we were able to accomplish as a school last year was to share this information with the equity team and start the conversation we brought the information to our certified staff pretty early on without a whole lot of information it was just to get it started and they brought up really good questions that pushed the next level when I went to the Native American family night and when we held the parent connection meetings uh they the information we shared there was because of the deep questioning and the um the way that the staff is really really thinking about it really brought depth to the conversation
and then in addition that was also the presentation that was shared with sixth eighth graders through our social studies teachers and had the students give some input as well but that's what we were able to accomplish between I'd say like November December of last year when this all started to on the end of last school year and then this school year the second part of that box from the examination portion I brought a follow-up to the staff because I hadn't been able to go back with them after I did the little deeper dive so I went back with that to them this year and some of the data changed based on the new information and also I have some work to do with the equity team to follow up with them as well to decide
on the remaining pieces of the examination that we'd like to continue including including our uh classified staff in the conversation uh the retired former papico staff I don't know if you know this but there is this group of retired type of good teachers who gets together every first day of school and like has the gazelle celebration will retired and they still have a deep Network when they and they're still connected and we wanted to consider a community Forum just to bring up the neighborhood associations into into the conversation and bring more student voices in the lower grades just because they're not they people think that they're not old enough they weren't old enough for the way we were approaching it last year but I couldn't expand the presentation the conversation include younger students and really
involve more parents last year we held uh the two parent connections meeting but they were um at the time on WebEx so the participation was pretty low and so I'd really like to bring it back on to the agenda I've already sent uh some newsletters with information and put out a new survey for this year to see if there's any additional voices before we have those parent meetings so I just wanted to get it out another way before those so that's my plan our plan I'd have to go for this year but we also know that that won't take all year to get through those steps last year being the year that it was it was really challenging even to get to those steps that we got to we'd like to complete that examination phase
and be able to move on to the exploration phase this year and so um we know that that's going to really require some identity development about who we are and what we want to stand for and what we want to be called if we don't want to be called Papago anymore and so um the next slide here is just kind of the thinking around exploration about the identity the range of perspectives and opinions about the topic um staying learner Center learner centered and really intentional about this exploration that we have some good guidance and criteria to follow and that we really are considering indigenous representation in this exploration because that's where where we've come from so I'd really like to um come here as to our Equity leaders as we're leading this together about your
guidance for the direction of of the naming of our school if you have some and we'd like to see um what your thoughts are and just get your input as well so that's my good night thank you so much for that presentation I do have a question I know that somewhere in the middle of the presentation you said that there was a little bit of shift in feedback that you were getting what was that shift or what does that look like so when we did the survey with the staff and the question was are you in favor of exploring a name change at the time last year um with the limited amount of information but what we were able to share increased by 10 from 84 or sorry nine percent 84 to 93 of hapaco
certified staff and last year I don't I didn't get a lot of people um responding to the survey I had 26 staff members and the reason was the way we frame the questions didn't get them another option and just said yes or no and they really didn't like that they felt cornered and so this year I opened it up and I brought the survey back same questions just gave them a place to explain a little more and so they gave more results and they answered the question differently and I had 43 Stefan which is almost every certified staff member responding so that was a difference in adding additional information um part of what I shared the second time around what I'd like to share is after the main yellow presentation there are some white pages
on your PowerPoint where I just put all the resources and the slides I had been sharing that where I learned some new things and added that in the presentation so one in particular is the kjzz uh news story with Professor Ophelia zepeda from University of Arizona her story is about six minutes long it doesn't take a long time to listen to but that really forced a little bit of a shift in just understanding it at a deeper level so bringing that resource really did help awesome um the other question that I have um is I love the fact that you're going to go back and try to do more parent engagement that's important too um I think one thing and renaming the school that I think would be awesome to see is see what the
kids feel what the school means to them and get their input of what you know they they think of their school and maybe a nice name will come up of what the kids are saying you know um so I think that even collaborating the kids and I know that we have oh I don't even think oh yeah student body representation but if we could probably maybe maximize that one in some way that would be great just to hear what they say how they feel with their schools especially the older kids like what the school means to them and maybe something will pop up out of there and I have plans I mean I didn't actually didn't put it on there to work with our student council around this issue there are other Equity issues we
wanted to bring forth with the student council as well but this is one that we wanted to have them be leaders of yeah awesome I think you guys are doing everything in the right direction you're taking the time that you need you're getting the voices that you need so I think it's moving forward in the right direction and I appreciate all the work that you're doing behind it I had a follow-up question for you for last year that I thought of the next day that I don't think ever made it to you but you said that um someone had said by changing the name of Papago we would be erasing them or they would feel like they were being erased was that a staff member it was at the Native American family night I have
the quote right here um argued that when we did the exploring the change the comment was changing the name is erasing us so that was that a native person okay yeah so the context was around in this community if you take away the name Papago well the name of an indigenous group still be alive and well here in this community so that's what that one voice was sharing and I think that's really valuable comment um I would love and this is really challenging I would love to somehow honor um the Tohono Autumn or Native American people in the new name somehow um I don't have um an idea of how to do that I mean Tona Autumn means desert people right so um uh I would love to to Sophia's point well or people you
know I mean I love I think asking the kids that but also trying to keep keep it in context um and you've got indigenous representation down here maybe um you know that could help just bring in the brainstorming I would love to see if there's a way we can still honor that because the point is not to um just americanize the name you know we can call it Creighton Academy number two but that doesn't really I think I don't want to necessarily erase what the sentiment was when it was originally called Papago whenever that was decades and decades ago um so I would just love to see a name somebody you know that keep that in mind as names are going I actually have a guy I was going to email who is um tone
Autumn and is he's not very familiar with his own story but he's doing a lot of research on it and so um he's the husband of a friend of mine so I haven't done it yet but I thought he might have some ideas um and I'll have that conversation with him if I have any if he's got any ideas but I think in involving indigenous representation is probably the key to getting some of those ideas or answers yeah I think I want to just emphasize and Echo Miss Mitchell for you saying you know I think it kind of goes back to the conversation we just had their unintended consequences right you know and and as you've shared there are multiple perspectives um I also want to just um share appreciation that I think you know
the process you're going through and the time you're taking and you're being very intentional and very purposeful and I really appreciate that um I love the acknowledging the retired former staff because you know and the community because you know that those are going to be the people that have the strongest emotional reaction good or bad right um and it's important to hear their voices I think along those lines you know really making sure that we have that indigenous representation um and you know finding that balance and we we don't want to erase any representation we don't want to unacknowledge you know if that makes sense um and and it doesn't mean that it has to be to home Odom you know we have a lot of Native American families you know is there I'm like
Miss Jeffrey I don't have a perfect answer but I think asking those families in those communities how can we continue to honor um if the name changes the direction you know I know we're still in the process of deciding as a community if that's the way we want to go but if we do it would be good to to continue that incorporation and be very purposeful when if we choose a new name for saying that because I hadn't come back on there to go back to the Native American family I think that would be another step I can I think it's huge you know and it could be something and and bringing in the kids you know I we have very high Native American population of kids and especially I know you know students that
I've had in the past and and students I serve in both next door you know similar demographics a lot of their families still you know live on the Navajo reservation up north of the Hopi reservation or they live south and and there is a feeling of you know when I go home I belong and I and I see my culture and and I feel that and that recognition and then when I'm in the city I'm kind of lost you know and we want to make sure that we're we're not losing that and we are honoring and recognizing so um I think that kind of going back to miss creodol's Point like the kids do they're gonna come up with ideas that no adult is going to think of so thank you Mr compost do you
have anything yeah I know people not only much 50s even more and and they are so proud of uh mentioning that they have been that they went to Papago and now uh for for us as uh didn't know that it could mean to someone from from the uh tribe some somewhat offensive we felt proud to be identified with the school that has a name that relates to them uh so so uh for for that I I I I appreciate what what uh uh Mrs Arrow mentioned about someone saying hey for trying to not offend don't ignore us and and and and I'm pretty sure that everyone that has been to Papago I mean I didn't go to the school but uh my kids did it I'm so proud of of having that name on a
T-shirt and if I go anywhere I I remember going to the to this uh uh uh it's it's a it's a chicken place on South Phoenix for for a Black Culture people that they they serve these uh chicken with some uh taste from from Alabama all those places and I was wearing this uh Panthers black uh uh sweater and they wanted to buy it from me and and because of the panther because it was black and then there was another person in a table and said I'll buy you because of Papago because I went to that school and and so uh I don't know uh again let's just be careful uh uh maybe we can we can have someone from that drive hey if it was up to you what would you give us some
ideas or some names that will still incorporate and honor you guys and and then bring those ideas and then if we need to make that decision to change but but don't forget about them if we're trying to defend them and maybe they don't want to be defended maybe they want to be uh acknowledged I don't know Mr Campos was he done yeah sorry yeah and thank you Miss Ayers um I don't think I'm sure we have four Native American families that attend all of our schools maybe it would be prudent to have a meeting at least so maybe they don't belong I mean maybe they don't go to that school if their children don't go to that school but maybe you could get a bigger wider audience that actually is the Native American family united
the district hosts with the Native American program but only two came no no no only I was the first in-person event they'd ever had since the pandemic there were more than two I want to see there were like 11 family oh okay maybe sorry nine families but they I would love to be able to go back to um because to that or to that group and follow up as well maybe even making phone calls and just having a conversation with them I'm sure there's not a huge amount of them but because we're getting some more opinions but thank you for your work absolutely thank you for the idea all right thank you so much it looks like you're doing great and we hope to hear on how this will unfold thank you um now we
go to 10A which is governing board asba policy advisories number 716-736 first reading typically presented to us by asva and immediately following any statutory changes mostly their tweaks and additions from State changes nothing jumped off the page at me but if the board would like us to look into any of these from the first week before we bring them back to you for a second read we would certainly be willing to do it I didn't the only one that I do have a question about is policy advisory 716 which talks about um referring Children's Services to Behavioral Health Services through access is that something that we do is that something that we have implemented because it says here that not every school district has to have it or has to comply with it students through
Southwest Behavioral Health Services and also through care Solace right and organizations work to connect people to access or Medicaid related services as well as their own insurance if they have it and then we also provide funding through the Creighton Title One program to families who need that assistance as well okay other than that I didn't have any other ones does anybody have any discussion on any of the other items no and they've all um I think what asba released is very much in line with everything that we thought at the conference and everything we've been following this entire year um so you know just to reiterate kind of what I said earlier is just this is a lot of policy changes and I just really want to emphasize that every staff member needs to have
training on these thank you anything else from anybody Mr Campos anything no I'm fine okay thank you um if we have no other information on that Dr Lewis can we pres we'll proceed to the next one out who can okay all right next we have the discussion and consideration of a governing board resolution supporting the 2023 aggregate expenditure limit override um I just want to say that whoever wrote this did an amazing job writing it it's very well written and it's important that as school district and as elected officials we're actually um sending out these resolutions and sending them at all to our largest leaders just because um we're calling on for something a special session to happen November 8th I'm gonna do my civic duty spill is very important that we all get registered
to vote and go out to vote because those people who are on your legislator and senators are the ones that are screwing with us on this public school fund stuff so it's highly important to go out there that's why we still go out there and knock doors and collecting signatures for the override so I don't have any input more than it's beautifully written and let's get this sent off as long as nobody else has any other input oh I moved the governing board approval resolution supporting a fiscal year 2023 aggregate aggregate expenditure limit override please all those in favor Mr Campos hi Miss Ayers hi I am from myself Miss McCaleb hi I'm Miss McCaffrey all right that brings us to okay motion passes you wouldn't be surprised how it's a contentious issue in other
boards um 11a future agenda items does anybody have a future agenda item Mr Campos do you have any no okay it looks like every yeah go ahead I'm sorry I don't have a future agenda item but I had a comment on one of the future agenda items sure um can we I will not be here on the 18th but I would really like to be present for the boundary and attendance update if we could do that on the fourth if not I get it but that's tight for us staff wise we could move it to November all right did you just ask it to be on the fourth well it's fourth or 18th I won't be present sometimes it's on the fourth okay if you look oh at the end okay are we okay yeah
yeah it says it's on our fourth yeah I think I may have done that because I heard you were going and we are okay yeah I believe we are we um we've had a couple of hiccups with some staff members being out so um I will double check but I believe wrong track for the field okay and if we're not I don't think any of us opposed pushing it to November okay just in case you guys can't great get it I don't think we yeah it can be done in November that's fine I hate to ask those kind of things but I think that's such a huge huge yes piece that I I want to make sure that everyone nope okay and all right that brings us to our last item and I move the
governing board adjourn all those in favor aye I thank you guys have a great night
