Henderson County Board of Education. Uh to get started, Mr. Joe Maggar will lead us in the pledge of allegiance. If you'll all stand and join us in the pledge of allegiance. Appreciate it. >> I pledge algiance >> to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Thank you, sir. Appreciate everybody being here tonight, especially during the summer when most folks are on vacation or moving or going or doing something. First item or the next item that we want to address is to uh approve the agenda. I'd like to add a change to this uh meeting. At the end of the meeting, Dr. Lawson will add a change for the date of our July board meeting.

So, uh Robin, if you'll put that in these on this agenda to be dealt with at the end, I'd appreciate it. Next item would be student and staff recognition. You're up first, Chris. >> Thank you, ma'am. KET is pleased to announce the winners of the 2026 Young Writers Contest. The annual contest encourages creative expression and literacy development by inviting students in grades preK through 12 um to submit original works in the following categories: graphic novel, illustrated story, poetry, short story, and persuasive writing. Prizes were also awarded in a special persuasive writing subcate subcategory focused on civics. Congratulations to South Middle School student Caroline Fish who received third place for her short story Never Enough. Also to Miss Jennifer Pritchette, South Middle School um library media specialist for encouraging her students to participate. Caroline, if you

would like to come forward and join Dr. Lawson at this time to be recognized. So quickly. Caroline, if I could uh kind of put you on the spot here, would you mind? So, it's quite an honor to be recognized at our board meeting. So, congratulations on that accomplishment. And would you mind telling us a little bit about the contest and your achievement? >> I was not as serious as I was supposed to be for this contest and it was just a little fun thing I was entering. But my story is about self-worth and not like having to have approval of someone else and to like be enough and you should be yourself. So yeah, >> we can all agree with that. >> Well, I'm so glad to hear you say those things. Um, that is

absolutely true and I'm glad to hear that you even though maybe you said you weren't as serious as you should have been, you approached a very serious topic and did it in a very I mean obviously in a state recognition kind of way to accomplish something like that. You worked very hard but also you're supported by your parents and your teachers probably. Is that correct? And are they here for you? Can we get your folks to come up here? I think I saw your teacher as well, Miss Gracie. We'll get a let's get uh get everybody here for a picture. Oh, we've got all the family here. Let's bring them all. >> Come on, guys. Come on. Can't wait. Congratulations, Caroline. Give her one more hand. >> Hey, quick quick little story about Caroline. So,

Miss Fish and I worked very closely together when uh we were in the digital learning coach role. And I don't know if Caroline notices this or not, but she is like a just a teacher in the making. We She used to we would be her students and she would just whip us right into shape. So, I don't know if you're going to major in teaching or not, but when she does, if she does, she should come back to Henderson campus. >> She's natural. I'm telling you. Uh, next we would like to recognize Henderson County FFA. Henderson County FFA chapter earned a gold chapter rating, placing it among the top 10% of FFA chapters in Kentucky. The chapter also selected was selected as one of the only 19 chapters in the state, advancing to national recognition.

Several students were awarded the Kentucky FFA state degree, the highest degree offered by the state, recognizing outstanding achievement and leadership. Recipients include Emma Mosley, Anna Lee Richard, and Bailey Moore. In competitive events, Austin Thomas earned second place in the state in social science division five of the Agra Science Fair. Overall, a highly successful year for the Henderson County FFA, marked by elite chapter recognition, multiple state level honors, and top tier student competition performance. If the FFA members here tonight and our teachers could come forward to be recognized at this time. >> Oh yeah, we got him up here. A little bit more. All right. So, just quickly here, I want to start with our sponsors, Miss Duckworth and Miss Wilson. if you guys would tell us a little bit about these students, their accomplishments. And

before we get started with that, I'll tell you these are the students this year. We're always so proud of our students and Future Farmers of America and this program. It seems like every year we're recognizing not only your state accomplishments, but the recognition nationally that our Future Farmers of America program has. So, congratulations on being the next group who's continuing to pursue excellence in FFA. Miss Wilson, can I start with you? All right. So, um I've always said to the kids, you know, it takes some of the best to be one of the best. So, these guys, they are some of the best. And that's why we are so highly ranked in the state. Uh the effort that they put in, the late nights, the extra planning, the after school, um I think there was

probably two weeks straight that we were there almost every night. So, that's a lot of time for kids to put in to a program. So, these kids show their dedication and that's why we are what we are. So, Um I can talk a little bit about um kind of what what they're doing um in FFA. Annalie just graduated high school. She got her state degree um through Kentucky FFA. Um now she's eligible eligible to get her American degree which is given to a select few of um students after one year that they graduate high school. Um Austin is going to do another aggra science fair. Here's our aggra science fair guy. um he has so much love and passion for science and anything um that he can research and do and he's actually roped Carter

into it next year. Um so he gets to do that as well. And then Carter is a rising what grade you junior um that will be serving on our officer team next year which is awesome. So just just quickly here, I wanted to give each of these students an opportunity uh to kind of talk about um you can talk about your roles and our accomplishments here or I know that um Annalie is our graduating president or maybe just what this program has meant to you in general and pass the mic after that if you don't mind. So for the chapter rating form, it takes a lot of rigorous filling out paperwork, doing a lot of things, making sure everyone's accomplishments are written into the form. And so it's taken a lot of work from me

and vice president Bailey Moore that's not here and our adviserss and all these people here today. So it takes a lot of work to be recognized for what we do, but I'm so glad that our chapter is being recognized for the hard work that we put into everything that we do. Um we've definitely reached out to a lot of different things such as middle school and elementary school. So we're trying to impact the next generation of agriculture and we hope to see that grow um in the coming years. So let's just like Miss Wilson, Miss Duckworth said, I'm the lucky one who gets to do the aggra science fair projects. So every year my science fair projects has to grow Kentucky agriculture or find a find a problem and then make a solution to it.

So this year my problem was farmers perception of climate change and my goal was to address that problem and show that farmers are not the pro the sole problem of climate change in Kentucky. My name is Carter Onan. Um all the work that they talked about I didn't necessarily participate fully in that last year but this year is my turn to do all the work and paperwork and sit there on a Chromebook for four hours. That's about all I got. But this is my turn. >> Well, before so before I let you go to uh so just as you're kind of saying, Carter, your time is next year. And so you can kind of see the fantastic program we have that it's year after year after year. Thank you for your leadership to our sponsors.

Um to be this successful you need the support of teachers obviously and staff but you also need the support of your families. Do we have any of your family members here if we could ask the family members to come up and we'll uh we'll get here in the picture. We may have to do uh like maybe you all step forward and let your family kind of stack in there. We'll put Carter in the back. >> Come on, Miss Robin. Miss Robin, you'll be in the front. >> Congratulations. Please give him one more hand, please. >> Thanks, Mr. Grace. >> Yes, sir. Um Henderson County High School and the athletic department is uh proud to uh the Henderson County Lady Colonels captured their sixth consecutive second region championship, continuing a dominant run in success in the

regional play. Uh the team went on to compete at the 2026 KHSAA state tournament held in Lexington. Uh they were uh they finished as quarterfinalist representing Henderson County with a strong postseason showing. Congratulations on your season, ladies. That this team would come up. Uh Dr. Lawson would like to present you with some uh hardware. Mr. Smith All right, before we let you all get out of here, I wanted to take a second to um so here's also I want you to notice just how appreciative I am. I have for the past six years I planned my summer around the softball state tournament because we're going and it's been so much fun to watch all of our teams compete. I think one of the things I loved about as I see one of our past Colonel

greats here who hopefully maybe one day be one of our teachers here as well. uh this this team uh really it's hard to be as good as we are as consistently as we are and the commitment to teamwork and playing together and wearing the Colonel jersey just always u so much appreciate the way you all represent our school district our community and so ladies great job always proud of you but I also want to make sure I mention that uh and for our sponsors I appreciate all you mentioned those nights that you all were there those adults who invest time in our children and put in the extra work. We're so appreciative of that, the folks who do that. Uh, and these coaches put in so much time and effort to these kids and I

just appreciate what these coaches do. Uh, they're men of character, uh, men and women of character and they put that first and the way they invest in our kids. Um, I'm just always so grateful. It takes a lot of time and energy to coach and a lot of sacrifice. Always appreciate that. I don't think anybody does it better than our coaches. And that begins with our head coach, uh, Coach Shannon Troutman. Coach, I wonder if you tell us a little bit about this year's team. >> Well, um, had two seniors. All right. And, uh, thing unique about them is, uh, you mentioned that we've been six times. Um, of course, they're the only kids that have been all six. So, uh, they've got to make this, uh, trip six times. And been good leaders for

me. And I've had a I've had a strong upper class group. Um, bunch of great kids. And I mean, I'm I'm just blessed with very good people as well as players. I mean, I've got great kids. Um, I never get complaints. I mean, and I'm talking about like on the field. I never hear the complaints from the kids. I never hear anything about working hard. It's easy to be good when you've got great kids with great class. We know much of that starts at home. We appreciate the way the parents support um the kids and set good examples. And then also coach at the state tournament this year. I had a chance to spend the night there in the hotel one night with the team. And it made me think at to about the great

lengths our athletic director goes to and our high school administration goes to to make sure that you all are supported and that you have a great experience and all the details are covered how they pursue excellence to take care of you too. >> Absolutely. >> You always brag on those guys and I appreciate you doing that. So it takes a team. If we have some of our softball parents, let's bring all our softball parents up here. I'd like for Mr. Grace, uh, Miss O'Daniel Evans, uh, all our high school folks. Mr. Clauss, come on up here. We'll get a group picture here together. We may have to step Hey, there you are, too. >> We may have to step forward. Yeah. in there. Sure. I feel like I feel like >> Congrat Congratulations. Give him

a hand. >> Yep. Do it. Y >> got it. Sounds good. >> Have a good night. You all congrats. Have a good night. >> We really appreciate all y'all being here tonight. This is the best part of the meetings that uh we have each month. And uh thank you so so very much. >> Next item on our agenda would be the uh public participation. If there's anybody here that's uh wanting to address this board for any matter that is not on the agenda. If you had filled out a piece of paper and given it to Miss Robin up here, we'll give you time to do that. >> Moving right along then. want to approve the uh minutes from our capstone meeting and our regular board meeting from May 19th. We've received those minutes prior to

the meeting. Any questions, changes, or concerns about the minutes presented? Not I'd entertain a motion that we accept the minutes as presented. Have a motion from Mr. Smith. >> Second from M. Williams. All those in favor signify by saying I please. I vote unanimous. Next one. >> Yes, I know he says virtual. That scares me to death every time we go virtual. Aaron said he's got it under control back there. >> You be on you be on deck. I can roll with it. >> Colton. >> Yes. Can you hear me? >> Can't see you, but we can hear you. >> Oh, man. You're looking good now. Do >> I'm sorry. >> Yes, please. football field. East area. And I'll give you a I'll give them a quick update on culinary and then Colton will go

into the change order. Uh currently at the culinary uh and the high school and the parking lot areas, all the stainless steel has been installed, ceiling has been installed, grid um and ceiling tiles been dropped, cabinetry is installed. Um slowly getting equipment in. Uh contractors installing that as we get that. All uh fire suppression hoods uh are installed. Currently, they are demoing the front piece of the parking lot. The back piece of the parking lot has been demoed. Uh, but we are having to look at some soil conditions. So, we've got engineers looking at soil condition back there, but they should start rolling pavement here in the next two weeks. Uh, with a goal to have all of that done by mid July. Any questions about culinary or pavement? >> Anybody have any questions with

regards to what's been presented? >> Just a comment about the culinary. I really think it should be tried out before. >> So, so you're you're going to volunteer to come in? >> I can cook. Okay. I mean, what I mean, how many you want to cook for? It's going to be like hook. So, you can cook for one whole board meeting one night. >> We could. >> Okay, perfect. We'll set it up for July then. >> So, Chad, when's the product be done? >> The parking lot we're hoping is going to be done by the end of dead period. Right now, our big our big hold up in the back is is making sure the soil is stable because when they pulled the um pavement off, there was a lot of moisture underneath. So, we

had our engineer and soil I forget their name general contractor and there's a company that did our testing. solid ground testing uh came out there and they're looking at where is that water coming from? Um do we have to install a French drain? Do we have to French drain the whole thing? Do we have to just French drain the bottom and vent it out? So, we're hoping to have an answer this week and so we can proceed. The goal is to have that section done by the end of that period and but we're just waiting on engineers and solid ground to give us an answer. Any other questions? >> Yeah, I'm gonna ask I'm gonna ask him to explain. Go ahead. Yes, sir. It's basically long story short. last summer in this project. So that's

kind of system water. That's the first area. Second area of that in the wholeor is two temporary corridor. requirements. Everything else on top of that what's called basically roof area. Yeah. No, sir. That's pretty comprehensive and would open to any question that you have. Okay, you all given schematic drawing with regards to what's going to be done and it's pretty obvious that this has to be done or it's going to be a lot of a mess out there. And again, anytime you're renovating building, adding it with the renovation. There's some things that you come up with that have to be done as you get into construction. You have any comments or does anybody else have any questions? >> No, I think you got that right. >> Type of change order uh isn't desired, then one

of this magnitude obviously wouldn't be what we set out for. However, after visiting there and having been walked through this, this really is our only option uh for the functionality of our school at this stage in the process and we are still well within budget and we have money in the contingency as you say for things like this. So, with that said, I'll recommend uh a motion to approve change order number 2-4 with an increase in the amount of $118,458 for the East Heights Elementary Renovations project as presented. >> So, Colton, I appreciate you did a good job explaining what we need to have there. Dr. Lawson, I appreciate your recommendation. So you heard superintendent's recommendation. >> I'll make a motion. >> Thank you. >> I'm sorry. Okay. Like I've been set up for long

time. >> Good to go. >> Thank you so much. Appreciate y'all being here. Thank you. >> Get myself set up now. >> Yes, sir. Go ahead. >> Dr. Lawson and the board, you have the report for the Henderson County Athletic Department. Uh, do you have any question? Make this one a little shorter. There's a game one tonight that I want to get to. >> No doubt. Game three. >> College baseball World Series. What else? Sorry. >> I only knew that because I talked to someone yesterday that was interested in that game. So, >> it's in your blood. It's in your blood. >> But seriously though, um it's a short report. It is the summertime, but uh I did give a little more information at the end that that was probably things that are not normal.

I gave some just some some data information and our Title N uh report there. So again, if you have any questions, always feel free to email or call and I'll be glad to walk through any of it with you guys. >> Anybody have any questions with regards to the report submit? >> Can I take a moment to add all the time you want? >> Well, I want I've got a lot on DVR, >> the one that makes me look the best. So I have Shauna Evans. So uh Shauna is uh is our lead uh athletic uh I guess I would say AD. So she makes me look good. So without her I can't. But we have a little surprise for you guys. We want to give you guys something for all the support that you

show us at the high school. So >> So we know that some of you are are not Henderson County graduates. Some of our city high graduates. Some of you from North Laurel and some others are from other places. Um so what we done. We had some surplus jerseys that uh we were uh needing to do away with. And so what we have done is >> there's a few numbers that we don't have in our in our roster. So I didn't go out and create these. So if you didn't have a number in the roster rotation, which was Mr. Tom uh Alice, his his was 64, I think, was his graduation year. Um and we didn't have 99, right? But we did have 54 and 54 was the year of Henderson County High School. So we

went with 54 as a as the number that represents the Henderson County High School. We did 98 North Laurel graduates. So I had a student aid that was from USI. And so again, a little piece of Henderson for the year that represents the year you would have graduated high school. And then we have two more. I know we have 73. >> I was getting this one right. >> That's right. that >> I didn't have any city high any city high gear. We'll definitely uh honor you with that. >> And it was tough because I know you all have children that also played. So, I went back and forth, but but we did just wanted to really just thank you guys. And you're an 81 graduate. I am. >> So, thank you to Miss Robin for

helping us with this project. Uh and again, thank you so much for everything you guys do for us at the high school. We just wanted something that you could uh take with you. Get a quick picture of you guys over here. >> Mr. Mr. Grace's mom helped Making sure those look good. >> Let's get center. Oh god, >> that That was a very appreciated gesture. Thank you so very much. >> Hey, Mike, would you mind if I uh I just want to elaborate on what Mr. Grace said. Go ahead. >> Uh obviously, aren't those nice? >> Yes. >> And uh he and Miss Evans have been working on that for quite a while. And um we see many of our teams recognized and we talk about the long hours that it is to be athletic

director or assistant athletic director. Uh, and uh, but not just the long hours, it's the quality. It's the quality of Henderson County athletics. And that does trace back to Nathan Grace and Shauna O'Daniel Evans. And, uh, he's right. She does make him look better. That is true. Uh, and she's been making a lot of folks look better for a long time. But we're really blessed to have these folks just uh, it's going out of their way to pursue excellence to absolutely make our sports program the best it can be. It's often a thankless job. We have Matt Grace's son, Rick O'Daniel, and Helen O'Daniel's daughter. Um, and just we've got quality people. So, so proud of them and the and I know your mother too is so proud. So, we just have great people that

are absolutely going out of their way to make Henderson County athletic, Henderson County Schools great. Uh, this is just another example of excellence in all we do. So, really appreciate them. again. Thank you. Next item would be student overnight trip information. Dr. Lawson. >> So th these trips listed here are those that are within the 250 mile limit that we have on those trips. So, those really are just for your viewing. You can see many of those are our teams or our clubs that are competing. Mr. Robin, should I go ahead and turn the page? Okay. If you'll go ahead and move to the next one, though, I I do need you I would like uh to ask you to approve u these next ones here for uh Henderson County High School Skills USA students.

And they're going uh they competed in Atlanta, Georgia. As you all know, we we really do well at these competitions and and so many times it's hard to get all this paperwork in prior to going or if you know you're going to be able to go those kinds of things. Uh the Colonel Creations and then the dance team there. Um theirs is upcoming. So I really appreciate our people trying to some of two of those are retroactive and one of them looks like it's coming up here in July. So I'd ask the board to make a motion to approve the student overnight overnight trips that are presented here. Super have a motion, Miss Williams. We to accept the superintendent's recommendation. Second from Mr. McGar. All those in favor signify by saying I, please. >> I

vote unanimous. Thank you, Dr. Lawson. >> Thank you, Mike. Could I have one more? >> Go ahead. >> Just quickly here. Uh, in the audience tonight is the new Henderson County High School principal, Mr. Christian Clauss. If you want to give him a hand. >> Mr. Mr. Claus has been at the high school now for 5 years. Done a fantastic job. Uh he well knows uh what goes into that job and we're a high school that um it's that constantly pursues excellence in all we do and he uh he is he embodies all those things. We're lucky to have him and that is such a big job for really our whole community and so we're so thankful to have Christian Clauss captaining the ship at Henderson County High. >> Thank you, sir. We appreciate that.

A lot of communities have several different schools that kids migrate to over time. One, two, three, four, five. Henderson County is fortunate enough to have one local school that everybody can get behind and we appreciate you taking that challenge on to uh lead that school. Thank you. Next item. You still on the deck? got a new business here at the policy update. Is that where we are? >> Policy updates and uh student code of conduct. I think that we can deal with all that in one motion. >> Okay. >> Great. Then so uh as you all know this time of year we um we get the policy updates from the Kentucky Schoolboard Association. and our oversight team has combed through those um and we are are learning more and more on those and uh so

then uh next uh this is all and again I want to mention this is our first reading but this helps us to move in our communication process uh so then the next part there is our student code of conduct book Mr. Rush heads up the committee for that. We feel like we have a good plan there. We have meetings each summer around uh what's working well and what we can improve in those areas as well. So with that said, I would ask for a motion to approve the first reading of the KSBA policy update number 49 as presented and then a motion to approve the first reading of the 2026 2022 student code of conduct handbook as presented. heard superintendent's recommendation. >> Have a motion, Miss Williams. >> And student code of conduct. >> Okay.

Are you going to put them together? >> Yeah. >> So, the procedures also and as I left out there on B, the the board, if you wouldn't mind those procedures, Miss Bird, am I covering this correctly? Review and accept the procedures update number 29 as well. >> That's what our motion was. >> That's what it was. Go. Have a second. >> Second, >> Mr. Smith. All those in favor signify by saying I, please. >> I votes unanimous. Thank you so much. Next item is consent agenda. I think we have amounts to eight different items on the consent agenda. salary schedules. Uh, one year certification for the media librarian, transportation request in the summertime, bid renewal recommendations, the holy name students and busing business and uh shortened day for some students as well as some surplus

inventory. Y'all have seen this consent agenda. If there's any item needs to be pulled, we can pull it for discussion. If not, I'd entertain a motion to accept the consent agenda as presented. >> Make a motion. >> Have a motion. Mr. McGar. >> Second, Mr. Smith. All those in favor signify by saying I, please. >> I votes unanimous. Consent agenda is approved as presented. Treasury report. Dr. Los. >> Yes, sir. >> I'll be I'll be handling that. Uh, also just uh wanted to take a second to brag on our board on the salary schedule this year that will include a 1% raise for all staff. I think that's over the past five or six years. It's about 13% for all staff. Uh so appreciate that we know that's a combination of our uh state and

local funds. Appreciate our board supporting our staff and supporting us in a way that we can attract, retain, and develop the best staff. Also included in that, uh, Mr. Waller, uh, thank you. And, uh, the board mentioned that you would like to continue the $500 at Christmas and, uh, that's also included there. I want to say thank you to our board for continuing to do that for our staff when it u when they need it. So, I'm excited to uh, we're blessed to get to do that again. Also, I want to commend this board that uh four years ago, we started a four-year rotational pay study to help make sure we are at the market levels uh for all our positions. Uh we don't have that thing worked out completely, but we we are in

year four and it's beginning to really turn. And so each each of those four years, we kind of we have groups and we study those. And this year, the folks in that group in addition to the 1% overall raise will get on average around eight or nine% raise. So, it's going to be around eight or nine% for those market study groups. But commending this board on um having something like that in place helps us again to make sure that we're taking care of our people as best we possibly can and building our organization to last as well. So, thank you all for that. All of those. Uh on the treasures report for the month of May 2026, Henderson County Schools had receipts of 9 million157,26 and expenditures of 10,195,347 for net decrease for the month

in the amount of 1,38,321. And that's typical for this time of year. Well, if you look at the general funds of where it's coming, the majority of that is due mainly to moving money to pay for the construction projects that that we've got out there. So, the general fund increased by $564,000. So, we're we're in good shape. We're doing the things we want to do and our general fund's in good shape. So, we're going well. So, there's any questions with regards to the uh treasury report been presented? So I'd entertain a motion we accept superintendent's recommendation. >> Have a motion, Miss Williams. Second, >> second, Mr. Smith. All those in favor signify by saying I. Please. >> Thank you for that. The paid warrant report. The paid warrant report for payments made between May 20th,

0412026 and June 22nd, 2026. Total 7,590,471.91. >> Any questions on any of the bills that in there? >> If there are no questions, I'd request a motion to approve the paid warrant report as presented. >> Heard the superintendent's recommendation. >> Have a motion, Mr. Smith. Second, Mr. McGar. All those in favor signify by saying I. I. Vote unanimous. Before we move into the personnel, uh you going to we need put in the record that we're going to change our meeting in July. >> Yes, sir. Um so, uh in July for the past uh years, we have done a departmental review with our oversight team. And so to accommodate that, I would request the board change the meeting time for our July 20th meeting. Would you could we uh change the time from 6 o'clock p.m.

to 5:00 pm on July 20th? Any questions or concerns with regards to that? So, I'll make a motion we change the meeting in July to 5:00 p.m. and it'll be located right here. >> Second, Miss Williams. All those in favor signify by saying I please. I vote unanimous. Next item. Would you let the record reflect that we've received personnel actions, Robin, since the last meeting? And the last thing I want to comment is that uh prior to this meeting, we did the superintendence evaluation for the 2526 school year. And uh it's uh was done individually and then we put a cumulative evaluation together for the Western Kentucky Economic Council's Board Superintendent of the Year, which is Dr. Bob Lawson. I'm sure you all know about that. Uh it's pretty easy to evaluate a superintendent of

the year, but I want everybody to understand we're fortunate to have Dr. Lawson here. He does say he calls this home, but uh each of us evaluated him under seven different items.
