opportunity that is presented to you um go above and beyond and and just just do it just don't let anything hold you back let your dreams be bigger than you and let in there if you're afraid of them that's good just so just just keep pushing just do do you so I wasn't ready well you're always good no matter what tonight our Fiscal Court judges scholar congratulations to Grace Lawson for being a judge's scholar Grace was recognized for her academic achievements citizenship and Leadership at Niagara Miss holzmeyer if you and Grace can come forward at this time to be recognized congratulations thank you so when at Niagara when we choose our judges scholar we are looking for students who have who have a we have a high bar of expectations when we choose our student

for judges scholar and so um when we chose Grace we were looking at those very things that Miss Morris was saying so for leadership Grace leads by example she always aims to do the right thing in all situations she's taken advantage like Danelle was saying she's taken advantage of a lot of the leadership opportunities at her school so she's part of our live news crew every morning she's participated in Rotary Field cross-country basketball academic team National Honor Society and principals Council it's a big list um and then in principles counsel she's absolutely absolutely blossomed in her role because she gets the opportunity to teach other students how to be a leader and then she's also really grabbed on to technology and I've watched her make so much progress and amazing things that she's doing so

we're very proud of her for the leadership for academic achievement she has all A's on her report card and that can only be achieved through lots of hard work and dedication she always gives her best effort and she sets high goals for herself so here in may we have our Kentucky summative assessment coming up and she has set some goals for herself that are very high but we know she can do it she can absolutely achieve those goals and then citizenship Grace has a huge heart and she is respectful and kind to everyone she has a smile for everyone she encourages everyone to um be kind to their friends and to people that may not even be their friends but to be kind but as part of the National Honor Society part of their work

is to give back to the community and so Grace and some of the members of the Honor Society have been volunteering at home place and I was able to to watch her she's developed a connection with with one of the individuals there and she's I can see how she makes him feel important listened to and she's making a difference in his life even as an elementary student which is very amazing when I talked to Miss Nalley about um Grace receiving this honor she said that Grace has a great attitude regardless of the circumstances she's a great team player she listens to others perspectives and ideas and she will not settle for anything less than her very best in whatever she does and so we were in total agreement that we couldn't think of a better

student to represent Niagara than Grace Lawson [Applause] so I'm gonna Grace has a very supportive mother and she emulates her mother so if I could ask Sarah and the kids to come on up we'll get a picture act like you love your dad just quickly I'd like to say on behalf of Henderson County Schools thank you to all of those beginning board members principals teachers parents that support our students like this obviously this one's personal to Sarah and I and so we a personal uh thank you and gratitude and Grace we're so proud of you and then I'd also like to ask Grace I know how you love being put on the spot a chance to hold the microphone what were the special moments or your favorite parts of your day as a judge's scholar

I think my part of being a devious scholar was getting to hear what all the magistrate magistrates had to um did the advice they had to give me and who's watching how the whole like court process works and hearing everybody speak s we kind of had a prepper for that one all right great job give her a hand thank you all right to recognize is Aaliyah Craddock from South Heights Elementary School congratulations Aaliyah for being a judge's scholar on your academic achievements citizenship and Leadership you were recognized Mr Black if you and Ali would like to come forward at this time to be recognized you guys hear me all right yeah hi hi guys real quick Grace oh Grace is awesome too Aaliyah Cradock she represents the 1199 South Heights Elementary School to the full

uh she's not only a great athlete she's a great student she's an excellent Community member so I can think of anyone else uh fifth grade teachers it was quick when I when I asked it was no thinking that a lyric proud I'd represents Southeast Elementary School as our judges scholar so great job Alia thank you Mr Black and Aaliyah do you have family here did we ask your family to come up please behind all of our students and beside of all our students are these supportive families I know you all are proud let's get in here and take a quick picture together okay and just quickly thank you to Mr Black and thank you to this family for supporting the student and all those the board included all of our people who support you and

help you succeed and I know you're thankful for those but what about your days of Judges scholar what was your favorite part my favorite part and represents it he said her favorite part was being recognized as someone who represents the school the right way and represents it so that's right the 11.99 great job give her a hand congratulations to the Henderson County High School choir students who were selected for All State Choir if you can come forward this time Diamond McGuire Emily Hayes Janet mashindy Audra Nalley Amani Owens Kevin Hein and Cooper Vinson Beck Miss Heather Eaves if you could also come forward at this time [Applause] thank you congratulations and congratulations come on Joe okay hold it or just hold it for now okay let's let's all kind of scrunch in here see if

we can get a picture together congratulations on being named All-State choir we appreciate the way you represent the brand of Henderson County Schools when you are going to these competitions and Miss Eaves would you mind telling us a little bit about this group so in order to be selected for this choir students had to prepare a really difficult piece of choral music One on a part and then go into a room and sing it for some judges then they went into a room with one person sitting in a chair and they turned over a piece of music they'd never seen before and sang it with no help with a piano so that's really hard to do and these students are all amazing musicians and really just smart people and I'm proud of them and thankful

that they got this opportunity [Applause] congratulations to Kyler Hazelwood who won the local Elks hoop shoot on January 7th the district hoop shoot January 21st the state who shoot February 11th and the central region 9 hoop shoot on March 11th at the regional level he competed against a 12 and 13 year old state level winners from Arkansas Missouri and Tennessee he won the contest making 21 out of 25 free throws you will go on to compete at the national level in Chicago Kyler is in the sixth grade at North Middle School Kyler if you would like to come forward at this time foreign [Applause] ER I'm wondering if you're going to play division one basketball I'm watching the NCAA tournament I see how important these free throws are and I think I want this guy

and we have a couple seniors not with us due to prom sickness and work that's what on those it's a national champion problems that had we would take their medals for him so congratulations young ladies congratulations great job [Applause] for our staff recognition Dr Lawson if you'd like to come forward for this part for the recognition um I think we all know by now but we wanted to formally recognize a National Blue Ribbon School from Cairo Elementary we had such a an exciting celebration of them when they become a national Blue Ribbon school and then to have a chance to know the work that's gone into that and to uh and to see them realize that dream has truly been awe-inspiring on everybody's part in Henderson County schools and so we wanted to formally recognize

them at the board meeting and Miss Chappelle would you mind just you saying a few words about your team uh I like how you started that with just a few words no I'll summarize um so um it is definitely an honor to be here this evening to get to recognize team Cairo for all of their hard work um and just to give you kind of a picture of how uh our Blue Ribbon School status came to be we were nominated last February of 2022 by the U.S Department of Education as an exemplary High performing School based off of our state assessment data from two years ago so when you get a nomination the next part of the process is that you write narratives explaining your school Culture Your Community your practices and your processes within

your school that gets submitted to a team of people that review all of the applications one of the criteria also is that the next year's State assessment data also has to be exemplary as well so we filled out all of that back February of 2022 took the state assessment last spring and then we waited until September 16th I believe it was when we got word um that we became a National Blue Ribbon school so again lots and lots of hard work went into that and the bottom line uh for me was I I call it a Relentless pursuit of excellence in all that our team does each and every day I know that you guys experienced covid and what that was like within the school setting and I will tell you that I'm so proud

of all that they do but extra extra proud of how they persevered I found that grit during those covid days they taught live every single day no matter what and I believe that all of that hard work definitely definitely paid off I'm so so proud of Team Cairo also so proud of our students um that have determination and grit that is second to none as well we're grateful for the community our district leadership and our board members as well for all that you all do because without your love and support we would not be able to do what we do at Cairo so hats off to team Cairo I'm so very proud of you you all know that from the bottom of my heart and just grateful for each and every one of you so

[Applause] I'm going to ask our board members I wonder if we can file this group kind of can we go let's file this group kind of up front Miss Wilson when you lead the charge we're going to go all the way up front I'm going to ask the board members to come or come around Showtime are you ma'am yeah there you go there you go it's like sort of like Halloween you know thank you ma'am my pleasure my pleasure let's see have you gotten one there you go a pleasure I ran out Joel Joel take care of the rest got one more for you we get all of them over to your left over here is everybody got a pen we have congratulations thank you everybody foreign just quickly before you move on on behalf

of all the district you made us proud the Relentless pursuit of Excellence is the best way to describe it and that means a day after day after day after day effort that you gave and you continue to give we couldn't be more grateful for your continued effort and services and always want to tell you too it begins with leadership and Ms Chappelle had a vision and she inspired you and coached you along and that's how it started and you all put in the work in the whole District this whole Community is so proud thank you very much give him a hand [Applause] foreign Chrissy said it was going to get warmer Ryan Rush did you turn the air on Dr Lawson we appreciate all of that recognition and uh it bids well for our school

district and Leadership that begins with you and works its way all the way down to our schools and every individual at the school and this is without a doubt the best part of this school board meeting that I that I look forward to and I appreciate what you do and the recognition that these folks bring to our our school district as well as our community throughout Kentucky thank you very much the next item on there is public participation and recognition of guests right now I have four people that would like to address the board and uh the first one and I'm gonna read these in order if you got them I suspect would be a Cooper Benson Beck with regards to Senate Bill 150 concerns so Mr Beck if you come on up here when

you start I'll give you three minutes okay I'm not going to time you coming up here you get ready when you get ready to talk that's when you're three minutes as soon as you're ready all right my name is Cooper I'm a senior at Henderson County High School I am here on behalf of a formed Coalition of students at Henderson County High School we a formed Coalition of students from Henderson County High School are here to express our deep concerns over a recent Bill introduced and passed into the 2023 Kentucky legislative session this bill will have significant impacts on our education and our well-being as students as a coalition of students from Henderson County High School and we believe that it is our responsibility to speak out against these bills and to call for your

support in protecting our rights and well-being as students these bills if passed can have serious and far-reaching consequences on our educational experiences and our future prospects the building question is Kentucky Senate Bill 150 this is a bill that compiles several concerning matters into one for starter this bill seeks to prevent the Kentucky Board of Education from requiring teachers to use certain pronouns that don't adhere to a student's biological sex or birth certificate this bill also states that trans youth will not be allowed to use School restrooms lockers or shower rooms used by students of the opposite sex while students of the opposite sex are present this bill also requires parental notification of issues regarding contraceptives Family Planning and human sexuality and aims to ensure the right appearance to respond to books and other school materials

containing explicit sexual content which is defined as topics of sex education gender and sexual orientation on top of this Senate Bill 150 um will require parents to be notified if their child starts dressing um outside of their biological sex using a different preferred name or pronouns we as a coalition of students agree that parents should have a role in their child's education but we also believe that this bill will lead to the censorship and the Restriction of academic freedom it could prevent students from accessing important educational resources that could prepare them for the world Beyond High School Senate Bill 150 has been considered one of the most extreme anti-lgbtqia bills in the nation this bill erodes the basic human dignity of trans and non-binary identifying students and sends a very clear and harmful message that

they are not valued or respected in the Commonwealth of Kentucky we as a coalition of students call on you to publicly oppose these bills and to use your positions of authority to stand up for students and protect our rights we will We believe that it is our right to receive a well-rounded and inclusive education that prepares us for the diverse world that we live in we as a coalition of students urge you to support policies and practices that promote inclusivity diversity and Equity within our schools we also ask that you prioritize the safety and the well-being of all students regardless of their gender identity sexual orientation or family background we as a coalition of students I believe it's important to call awareness and urgency to potential threats on our education we as we as a

coalition of students understand that that the legislative process and is complex but we urge you to take a public stance against these bills and to use your platform to raise awareness about the harmful impact they will have on our education and our lives we encourage you to engage in dialogue with students and communities and pivotal community members to better understand our concerns and to work together to find solutions that benefit us all I appreciate you giving me the platform to speak on this as it holds very near and dear to my heart as an openly clear identifying student in Henderson County Schools I now have folders for each of you if I'm allowed to hand them out this has a signatures of 489 students at Henderson County High School who agree with what I just

said and and also urge you to oppose these bills thank you we appreciate you taking the time to address this board well said well next person we want to address the board would be Ava Benson that has the same Senate Bill 150 concern Ava thank you so all right your time doesn't start till you start talking all right hello um my name is Ava Benson and I am a student at Henderson County High School I am here also as a part of this Coalition of students taking a stance against the recent legislation in the state of Kentucky as previously mentioned by my peer Senate Bill 150 poses a direct danger to students like myself and will only further perpetuate the Discrimination that lgbtq plus students experience on the day today on a recent study done

by UCLA researchers in 2020 there are almost 30 000 students in the state of Kentucky who identify as a part of the lgbtq plus Community this is a pretty significant number considering that there are over 000 students across our state this means that at least one in every 20 students in our state identify as a part of this community to put this into perspective this means that theoretically at least one student in every classroom is being directly targeted by Senate bill 150. I am one of these students I am a queer identifying student at hchs and school has always been a safe space for me I came out to my own friends at school before I even came out to my parents school has always been a place where I could be myself my real

self without fear of judgment and I'm not alone in this way of thinking school is a safe place for thousands of students across our state and County and of Senate Bill 150 becomes a reality that safe space will be eliminated so members of The Board District administrators teachers students and all members of the community that are here tonight I'm asking you for your support support against this legislation this is not a political matter this is a matter of thirty thousand students across our state and throughout our County having a space to be themselves and feel safe thank you thank you very much Emmy wolf and you're addressing Senate Bill 150 concerned also yes thank you good evening my name is Emmy wolf and I'm a junior at Henderson County High School I am not a

member of the lgbtq plus Community but I am speaking today as an ally to my friends and family members who are I would like to warn you that I'm briefly going to discuss suicide 1.8 million according to the Trevor Project which is an organization that helps young queer and trans youth 1.8 million lgbtq plus youth seriously consider suicide every year at least one child will attempt suicide every 45 seconds and 82 percent of transgender individuals have considered killing themselves as a person who has struggled my entire life with clinical depression this idea terrifies me the idea that anyone who could feel so alone so helpless that they would consider taking their own life it's disgusting this is something that we can stop we can help these children if Senate Bill 150 is passed it will

effectively eradicate any hope of support that transgender teens have transgender teens are two 7.2 times more likely to commit suicide than their peers this bill will forcefully out them to their parents which can put their lives in significant danger I am scared for the future of my friends the future of my family and for my own future I urge you to consider what my peers have said thank you thank you very much for taking the time to address this board the last one is Jocelyn Adrian sorry one second all right dear members of Henderson County School Board of Education my name is Jocelyn Adrian and I am a sophomore at Henderson County High School thank you for allowing us to speak to you tonight I'm here with my peers to address the Kentucky Senate Bill

036150. I'm standing in front of you today as a scared student advocate for the students who don't have a voice there's a concern sorry if this Bill gets signed school will not be a safe and accepting place for gender identity and sexual orientation for many students school is a safe haven if the bill passes it will hurt many kids who don't have supporting families many will be abused targeted kicked out and even be so depressed they may even move to Suicide multiple students have expressed concern to me about their parents or Guardians finding out and I fear for my friends and my generation this bill will change our entire system not just the safety of the students but will dehumanize lgbtq plus students this would make it so that the schools couldn't discuss orientation or

gender identity with students of any age what would it means schools wouldn't be able to talk about sexually transmitted diseases or human sexuality the schools will also need parental permission to talk to students that are in sixth grade and above many parents will not agree due to personal views and homophobia parents might fear that if their teens learn more than straight sex it will turn kids gay which couldn't be further from the truth it's important for teens to learn about safe sex in order to protect themselves and others many teens won't learn how to protect themselves because there needs to be a parental signature to learn this will pick many kids at high risk of getting sdis or STDs this is targeting people's physical health and mental health we are the future this is about

freedom and human rights many will argue it's too controversial it can't be controversial when it's our human rights as a school and state we should feel United and inclusive of everyone Embrace differences this isn't about political parties this is about our lives thank you for your time thank you very much for taking the time to address this forward the next item on the agenda would be to approve the minutes from prior meetings which would be the March 6 special meeting of this board of education so I'll entertain the motion that we address or accept the minutes as presented so moved and motion Mr Alves second second Mr Smith all those in favor signify by saying I please all right I vote unanimous excuse me next item would be to address capital projects Thompson yes sir

appreciate it the first item on a capital project um is we have sent out a request for letters of interest uh for replacement at the Pod um the two schools with the pods that'd be Ben gate in East Heights we only received one letter of interest and we would ask for your consideration uh for RBS Design Group to be the architect on the Pod replacement at bengate and the East Heights I'd request the board approved rbs's Design Group for the Pod replacement project at bingate and East Heights as presented by Mr Thompson I heard superintendent's recommendation any questions entertain a motion yeah I do have a question just for my clarification will you make a motion get this on the table and get a second and then we'll go through the discovery okay you have

emotions second Miss Williams go ahead okay we're going to approve RBS I understand they're the only ones that that expressed an interest then will that precipitate a uh requests for proposal requests for quote what what's the next step the next step is we would work with RBS through the through the design project through the pre-bid and the bid process is there time and money associated with that only upon the completion of the designs and through the project but not for the actual there's an architect fee that that is attached with that compensator after the fact that is correct what I wanted to find out yes thank you good question any other questions I have a motion in a second all those in favor signify by saying aye please all right all right vote unanimous all

right for the next two pieces number two and three I would like to call Mr Craig Thomas from RBS um up to the microphone to discuss the change orders on those two projects thank you I appreciate you all giving us opportunity to continue to work with you your staff has been awesome to work with and we do appreciate it you've got two change orders one for each project one being the softball facility one being the north bleacher project uh the softball project there was a overhead cooling door that I think the end user wanted to change to a pair of man doors and to do that you got to credit back for a 90 a little over ninety seven hundred dollars they also wanted to change the bad insulation of spray foam insulation and that

is an ad of um 3 800 so a total ad I think would be 2860 dollars excuse me two thousand eight hundred sixty dollars not a square foot um any questions go ahead you have another change order yes the other change order is to the north bleacher project and it has to do with fencing when they were doing the project we had them put in the bids to take down fencing to be able to remove that product which was the old concrete bleacher system and they were supposed to reinstall that fence and they can still do that but I think the administration wanted to look at doing a new fence and then doing a new fence back to the tech building and uh you got a credit for the original work of 3 528 dollars

in the uh an ad to do a new fence versus replacing reinstalling the fence was 13 6 and then to put the fence back to the tech building was an additional 4 472 dollars so your total ad would be 14 584 dollars so we have two change orders one for bg21 353 where we're going to change the door and then change some Insulation at a softball facility and then uh BG 21077 where we're gonna look at putting new fencing material in at the Middle School Stadium bleacher is that correct yes Dr Lawson I'd request the board approved those change orders as presented as we moved the motion Mr Alvis second Mr mcgarr any questions comments all those in favor signify by saying aye please all right all right votes unanimous thank you very much thank
