Good morning. Welcome to the Desaert Spelling Bee. My name is Dr. Shelley Asai and I'm the assistant superintendent for educational services. We are so glad that our families could join us today and that we have students representing every school uh to battle it out in our spelling. I wanted to take a minute to uh thank our board members for being here. We have Mary Zola who is our governing board member in back who came to support and our governing board president Don Dinsmore who is judging along with Rebecca Willie who organized everything from transportation to getting the kids to the local be. So round of applause for Rebecca. [applause] and I will turn it over for her so she can review some things and then we will let the battle commence. Battle. Okay, watch how

I'm going to squeeze it. Raise it up. There we go. All right. Well, good morning. I am Rebecca Willie. I'm the K5 literacy coordinator and it is my pleasure to welcome you to our annual Daart spelling bee. Um, so today students, you're going to take part in an American tradition. The format of the competition is a traditional spelldown. That is, each of the spellers you see here will receive one word per round. Before we begin, I'm going to introduce you to all of our officials who will be presiding over our competition. First, I'm uh pleased to introduce you to our prouncer, Mr. Aaron Hicks from Willow Canyon High School. He's an art um IB English teacher. Mr. Hicks. [applause] We also have Miss Danielle Edertton. She is our lead judge. [applause] um our governing board

uh president um Miss Don Densmore, [applause] our social studies content specialist, Miss Jessica Felix, [applause] and our EP coordinator, right, uh Miss Jen Shernikov. Also, I want to um introduce you and um let you know I don't see Miss Yoast in here, but Miss Deb Isherwood [clears throat] is really the background here, like helps us get it all going here, and Miss Melody Yoast is our helper out in the hallway. So, thank you to all of our officials. So, before we begin, we're going to review the process for our spelling bee. We'll begin with speller number one and continue in order. Um, spellers, please say your word before begin spelling so the judges can verify you heard the pronouncer correctly. When it is your turn to spell, please approach the microphone and speak loudly and

clearly as you spell your word. You can ask the pronouncer to repeat the word or provide an any alternate pronunciations. And you can ask for the definition, part of speech, language of origin, or an example sentence. Remember, if you're ever not sure what your word is, ask for more information. We are here to help you understand, and there might be a clue or something to jog your memory in the additional information. The pronouncer will not answer root word questions or take requests for alternate definitions. If the word has a homonym, a word that sounds familiar but has a different meaning, the pronouncer will make an effort to share that information and provide the part of speech and definition without being asked. But remember, it's ultimately your responsibility to understand which word you're being asked. If

you suspect your word has a homonym, ask for the definition to be repeated. You can start over to spell a word, but if you change the letters or sequence of letters from what you've already said, it will count as a misspelling and you will be out of the competition. If you're going to restart spelling your word, it's helpful to let the judges know what you're doing. For example, if my word is kangaroo and I say k a n and then forget where I am in the word, I might say, "May I please start over and wait for the judges to nod, then go ahead and start spelling again." When you spell, the judges are listening for the correct letters in the correct order. That's all. We will not disqualify for indicating or failing to indicate

capitalization, hyphens, spaces, accents, or other markings. If you misspell, the head judge will ring the bell and you will sit down after you take your um certificate and your um award ribbon. Now, let's talk about what happens at the end of the B. If all spellers in a round misspell, all spellers in that round will remain in the competition and a new spelling round will begin. If only one speller spells correctly in a round, a new one-word spelling round will begin and the speller will be given an opportunity to spell the word on the list, the anticipated championship word. If the if the speller succeeds in correctly spelling the anticipated championship word in this one-word round, the speller it will be declared the champion. Now, if anyone believes there has been a mistake made when

a speller was eliminated and appeal may be filed, Miss Isherwood has those forms. Appeals must be completed and returned to Miss Isherwood by the end of the round. She will hand the appeal to the lead judge. The appeal must uh include the word in question, the name of the speller, and the reason for appeal. Um, please do not approach the judges directly. If the judges decide to reinstate a speller, they will make an announcement. Thank you for helping us keep the competition running smoothly. Finally, congratulations to all of you for reaching this point of the competition. Your dedication to learning correct spelling. Yes, [applause] your dedication to learning correct spelling and increasing your vocabularies will help you not only in this competition but throughout your life. Participation helps you build confidence, gain public speaking experience,

practice poise under pressure, and set goals. We can't wait to see all of these skills on display. Not just today, but all the amazing things that you will go on to do. Success in today's spelling be is just the beginning, and it's all about what you've learned of the words um you've had the opportunity to study. But in the end, there's a great chance it'll be all about the words that you probably have not memorized. When your moment arrive uh arrives, just do like the pros do at the national competition. Slow down, ask questions, think positively, and you'll be ready to meet that challenge. Lastly, we want to thank all of the parents and teachers who have been so supportive, our spellers during their journey. We applaud you um and thank you for all that

you've done to help them get to this place. On behalf of the Daizart Unified School District, thank you all for joining us today to celebrate the achievements of these fantastic young spellers. And we are ready to start our practice round. Um I'd like to remind each of you now spellers, we're getting ready to do our practice. What's going to happen during this round? You'll be given your word. Um um but if you misspell it during this round, you will not be out. But once we start round one, if you misspell the word, uh, one of the judges will ring the bell and then you're going to go sit down on the side over here with the rows of chairs.
