to the results and thank you again for showing interest that's all I have I also participated in the Veterans Day Parade I want to say thank you also to councilman Hastings for inviting us and I doubt they're listening but thank you to Lorenzo and Michelle who are driving the very cool McLaren Camaro 1988 convertible that I got to write in was awesome um you know we don't necessarily think about the volunteers who volunteer their vehicles so anyways I just like to thank all them too and as this is my penultimate board meeting for non-musicians that is next to last I would like to ask Dr croo if we could get that raise I've been asking for for four years you know if if we could just get it for the last meeting it'd be great

just kidding thank you Dr Coto for all your hard work it's been a pleasure being working with you and your phenomenal team um I attended the West Point School visit on October 23rd and just want to say thank you um for a great visit and great discussions um I attended the veterans assembly at Freedom traditional um their orchest ra and choir did a fantastic job outstanding they also had a couple speakers um from Vietnam and then we had a speaker from the VFW from Poria um which he presented a memorial American flag to um principal Wolford and that was very touching it was a wonderful day so thank you um I attended the surprise veterans parade I wasn't in it I was standing on the sidelines with my family and my father-in-law who is a

veteran so I just want to say thank you um to surprise and our veterans it was a great experience and I also want to say Happy Thanksgiving to everybody um I know it's in a couple weeks and we just want to just sit and say thanks and and reflect on what we're thankful for I'm very thankful for my family friends and um this opportunity to be on the board and I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving and then also for the bond I am very grateful for everyone that participated in voting um I'm sad that it didn't pass but I know that this district will do great things going forward um without the bond and thank you to the candidates who are running to come up here and and experience erence this great opportunity with

this team this Administration the district the teachers the staff our students um I'm excited to see what's to come so I hope everyone has a good evening thank you thank you everyone and just I just want to also point out that Miss Drake gave up her seat in the veteran Day parade for a veteran to ride so so thank you so much for that M Drake okay moving to consent agenda items I move to approve consent agenda items as presented second motion carries thank you moving to information item number one Dr croo thank you madam president uh tonight have a quick presentation on the stop it program um Arizona's Department of Education has introduced an initiative aimed at tackling the growing threat of fentanyl in our schools uh the school training training overdose preparedness and

intelligence task force known as stop it is educating students and School staff and working to prevent fentel related incidents Statewide um daer is proud to announce that we had three people uh that sat on that task force on the stop at task force Mr Kevin kashat um our governing board president um Miss Don denmore and myself um fentol overdoses unfortunately have become a critical issue in Arizona particular among young people uh with Rising concerns from parents Educators and students about the threat of fentanyl the stop it task force is stepping in to provide schools uh with proactive measures such as nxone to address overdoses as well as pamplets and assemblies to educate students uh nxone if you're not familiar is a medicine to reverse opioid opioid overdoses commonly used by First Responders and can be

purchased over the counter at uh many of our local pharmacies the task force is supplying our schools um with the medication um and informing teachers and nurses at schools how to ad administer it uh tonight we are joined by Sergeant Mike Gunderson of the Air National Guard also a stop at uh Task Force member and he will present the governing board and administration with 70 doses of uh n lockone for our daer Unified School District to administer to their campuses so we'd like i' like to thank the stopic task force uh Sergeant Gunderson and all their hard work and for the life-saving supplies that they are providing our schools this evening if I could get the governing board down here to receive that and we'll take a picture and we appreciate that e e although

I think it's so sad we're in a day and age where we actually need that on our campuses I'm very thankful I have it thank you thank you thank you Sergeant Gunderson you okay moving to item G2 School C CIP report Dr croo thank you Madame President tonight we have two CIP reports and Dr asai will introduce for us good evening Madam president members of the board it is my honor and privilege to introduce Mr Jack Chang the newly or the new principal of derer [Applause] high good evening Madame President governing board members Dr Coto members of the cabinet as a new Proud member and principal of daar high school it is my absolute privilege to be able to repres at daar high school tonight at daar high school there's a saying that once a

demon always a demon and I am extremely humbled and proud to be part of that Legacy and joining the ranks of the dedicated teachers and staff at desar high school tonight I have this privilege to present to you um the daar high school CIP and share with you how we strive to continue to build bond that tradition and to uplift every student that walks through that door DHS was able to retain their a Lael this year and thanks to the hard work of the previous principle and the Legacy that she's leaving us um but we did see a dip in EA and mass scores from previous year as you can see however we did see a increase in our science scores comparatively to previous years however I do want to point out also our aspire

to act growth data um in growth data a one equals one years of growth so EA is just a little bit shy of a full year of growth but our students gain over a year growth in math uh from aspire to act growth as you know that DHS has the privilege of hosting a quite a good number of el students English language learn students and they have a special place in my heart um when I first arrived in the United States I too was a monolingual student without any English skills and I spoke no English I remember not knowing how to get to class I remember not getting lunch for two weeks because I didn't know how to get lunch um and I would have done anything to be able to be in a loving

environment that DHS has provided um and I was telling the parents last night I would have been so lucky to be in DHS when I was in that stage of my life not knowing English and be able to go through that as you can see that on the left are students placed in various Z levels where their proficiency is but I want to point out that our teachers work extremely hard to grow our e students um and you can see that we have grown those students well beyond the state averages and from year to year so I also want to make sure that they get those recognition of the hard work they're doing and speaking personally I know how big of impact that those El language Learners um are having in our schools and their

experiences that daar high school is such a positive one and um I just can't uh how thankful I am for them to be able to do that college credit it has been said um that your imagination is a preview of life's Coming Attractions so I'm asking the board to play along imagine with me that students when they graduate telling their parents that hey higher education is possible for me and you can see here that at daar high school that's not just an imagination over 78% of our students is is able to earn college credits and know that college is possible while they're in high school at the HS and not only that it goes beyond just high school credits imagine that they're telling their parents that hey right out of high school we can go

into Workforce and half Workforce skills you can see that daar high school students are showing large number of growth in earning industry credentials and getting internships getting them ready for their life After High School all that contribute to a growth in our college and career career Readiness indicator points um from a data point of view from year to year with that said to continue the DHS Legacy we aim to maintain the a label for our school focusing on academics safety and the culture to reach this target whether it is through boosting or proficiency scores creating a safer more inclusive environment for our students or plans on ground ing this vision and priting our Student Success at every single level however we know that every Journey comes with it hurdles increasing the number of students earning

college credits achieving that oneyear growth for our EA score and capturing our students during before and after school to support them is a challenge that at DHS would Contin continuously face however the dedicated growth and the teachers and staff at DHS has able to turn these challenges already into opportunity this year just to highlight a couple we're able through the work of our teachers and Mr burn Ardine um student service student discipline we're able to lower our discipline events in quarter one drastically in terms of referral numbers last year 944 to this year 244 every single fall Sports through the hard work of Miss Matas and the sports coaches every single fall sports are filled and every single fall sport had a winning season and of course our football footb team went to the state

playoffs we found ways to capture our students even though they are having a hard time to come before after school we found ways to capture them and do intervention during school and we call that during the advisory and thank you to the fellow principal that guided me along to giving me that idea and of course with all that leading to a all-time high school spirit um if you are able to experience some of the football games we have more people that show up to our football game than their stands we had to bring out extra bleachers in order to fill the people people that are showing up so our school spirit and culture is at alltime high thank you so much for taking the time to hear about that our high school and I can't

wait to see what the future holds for the demons thank you and now um of course I will stand for questions thank you so much I don't have a question I just want to make a comment of this is awesome I mean to see how much students how many more students have earned college credit and the internship and all the positive things that are going on at that campus so congratulations to you and your team that's awesome thank you and you're right there's a lot more to happen at Dart High I just want to say I heard so many amazing things about you before we approved your contract and I'm just blown away at what you've accomplished in the short time that you've been there congratulations on all you reported on as I mean the

the science and the the math scores going up as high but then also you liter nearly double the percent of students earning college credit like from the previous year correct yeah a lot of that is based on the foundation that Miss Sunny Rush has laed for us as well so a lot of that credit goes for her and of course I wouldn't be able to do what I do without the amazing team that I have um they're literally in the trenches every day with me um you know we're picking up trash lines time we're in the stands we're yelling on top of our lungs at the sidelines for our football team um I don't know if I'm supposed to say this but I got a warning from the referee because I was too close to

the sidelines um it says I'll get a flag if I get do it again so you're very gracious to to to reference the previous administration but I'm I'm telling you like I I like what you are doing I think you had a lot to do with where you're at and I hope that you you're mindful of that that you you're definitely having an impact you did a lot of hard work and I don't want you to feel like that's not recognized or that doesn't have anything to do with what you've done in that building in the short time you've been there so please accept that um and then congratul ation on your fall Sports as well um no surprise with Coach matus leading the charge you're obviously excelling at all your sports um but again

just another another great thing having at daart um congratulations it's exciting time for you guys thank you very much I would also like to say this is just awesome daart has such an awesome Community you have such amazing students they work so so hard they're they're just phenomenal so I just I just say great job thank you for all your hard work because our students are getting the best so thank you thank you I appreciate it and I stand correct I apologize athletic director matus habit I'm sorry no longer a coach probably always a coach but anyway I apologize and I also want to just piggyback on what they have to say out standing numbers just phenomenal and did you mention that last year was it the tardies and the discipline was 944 and this

year it's 244 correct so um quarter 1 um we Implement some some different uh programs in such as Behavior tracking and restroom tracking and see how we can um do interventions before they get to a referral um and a lot of it came from the mind of U Mr burn right there working with our SRO um and so it has starting to pay dividends in the hard work that they've laid you know from the beginning of the year I don't know how many versions of Google forms we went through um so a lot of the hard work has is show showing to pay off and um we're really grateful for for everybody's hard workare to to make that happen phenomenal congratulations you guys great job keep up the good work thank you I also want

to say congratulations and as as M Miss Pritchard said I mean please take this feedback to heart um not only are are you newer you know to the district and to dier high but your team is is new as well and they have done a phenomenal job um I also wanted to point out the discipline um and you know referral the the huge decrease I mean that is clearly just great relationship building you know with the school resource officer with the students outstanding job and to see just just how far you've come um in such a short time it it really is remarkable and it it is definitely appreciated by this board thank you madam president thank you good job thank you guys and our next presentation will be by Caris SAR the principal at

Luke Elementary also a purple stars I'm just going to adjust this a little bit good evening Madame President uh denmore governing board members and Community I am the very proud and humble principal of Luke Elementary and I'm here to present our continuous Improvement plan very similar to DHS and um Mr what Mr chain just presented in looking at our data um we saw a very um like a stagnant um proficiency for for ELA where we stayed at 44% for our proficiency we did see a dip in math this last year in looking two years previous to that we did see an increase in 4% and then we saw a decrease in math but just like DHS we did see an increase in science um and I'm proud to Shar and you're going to learn right

after this presentation that for the third year in a row we maintained our a label um and we've increased from 2022 from 85.8 to 9011 points for State label so while we look at proficiencies there's so many different pieces of that um of the label and I wanted to highlight that growth overall and we're going to look at growth in a moment um some of the things we're doing to address some of our dips in math we have a math coach this year and we are working very strategically to um deconstruct standards and go kid by Kid standard by standard to determine the essential standards exactly what pieces every single child needs to meet their needs so that we continue to grow in the math area we are excited that we saw the growth in

science um and I'm excited to share that we are also growing in our student population so when I first came to Luke we were about 500 kids we are 650 or so and we are growing like you wouldn't believe um to the point that I call Mr madingley often and I'm like we're at theou we're very high and it's wonderful It's a Wonderful problem to have um but in doing that we were able to be very strategic with our um content teams in previous years fourth through sixth grade had two team teachers where teachers were teaching math and science or Ela and social studies we were able to departmentalize them so that they could focus on Ela Math and Science specifically to ensure that everybody is becoming an expert in those contents um and again

we go every single content standard by standard deconstructing standards looking at every single piece um of the standard to determine our next steps um for instruction for every single student as you can see our growth um for ELA and math according to the state average of 1.0 we were just shy underneath of that at 096 for ELA and 093 for math um in terms of our points for our state letter grade we did increase in that area and we earned 48 out of 50 points Al together in our growth um proficiency rating for our state label very similarly to DHS we do serve um several of our of of our students have an El need um currently we are about 8% of our current population last year we were about 10% um in that last

year we were able to have an 18% proficiency rating while the state average when we look I know it's pending up there when I do look on ad connect and I know that that's forthcoming State average was about 14% um and I really do attribute that to our teachers ability to look at every single student and their need according to both El and content um in terms of growth for elel um what you don't see there are our shifts in our student population um interestingly enough in 3rd through 8th grade we generally get about 70 new students who come to us um new every single year and our grade levels are about 70 so over the core over at the whole that whole grade level span um we have varying needs where they're not the

consistent cohorts if you will or the same students that we're comparing in terms of growth 21 out of 48 students last year grew one proficiency level on aella and we had four grow two levels and nobody went backwards which I attribute to we're just constantly trying to raise that bar and grow them individually speaking of our goals um overall our goal is to increase our proficiency by 3% not only overall so our all of our student population for ELA Math and Science but then also for our subgroup so looking specifically at our El Learners and increasing their proficiency along with ESS students this year our theme is jet fueled and Mission ready and what that means to us at Luke is that our Jets our students they're the ones that fuel us and we are

always ready for our mission which is to ensure Mastery of grade level standards for all and that might look different and so we have to go and be very very very strategic and specific on what every single learner needs um and it is a collaborative effort it is not you know it's a full team um my team is here with me and we collaborate all the time um we we use a walkthrough protocol um that we go in and we diagnose a lesson and we talk about what are the strengths and what do we want to see replicated throughout our campus and what what's an area where we can grow this teacher um and then we do In-N-Out coaching where we'll cover the classroom we'll talk with the teacher really quick give them some tips

and they usually run with our ideas right away um today Taylor Who's in the audience um rtls took a group of our new teachers to Mountain View for learning walks where they're learning from one another and that's something that we've established inhouse as well with our leadership team um um so that every single month they visit one another to take away an instructional strategy and put it into practice in their own classroom um we also um as you can see our last goal is specific to our ESS population um and we do learning walks every single month um with our ESS coordinator and then weekly with with our ESS specialist um and we deconstruct the standards just alongside of them so that we know that our students who have an ESS need um their IEP

goals can be in relation to an essential standard to fill the gaps our second goal is surrounding school safety and it is to decrease disruptive referrals from 75 to 67 as of today we send a weekly update out and as of today we had 16 disruptive referrals um for the year thus far and we're about I think we're officially through halfway through quarter two right now um so we are on track to meet that goal but we're doing that by increasing engagement and increase engagement at the do level so we know that dok1 is recall and it doesn't demand a whole lot of cognitive demand from our students but if we increase rigor we're going to increase engagement thus decreasing disruption um and we also have a task force that focuses on SE expectations which

are safety ownership A+ attitude and respect and then our diar core values where we celebrate students for meeting those different expect our last goal is surrounding our community and maintaining um a growing at least 3% in our satisfaction or our likelihood to recommend Luke um and over the past three years I remember a couple of years ago Dr Coto gave us a challenge to become the star of your community um and Luke Elementary took that to heart um and through Partnerships with Luke Air Force Base um I know you're aware last year we were the first purple star school candidate um which has been an honor and a privilege to be part of that legislation and really putting the supports in place for students in transition um and then this year we were named the

first purple star school um in Arizona after legislation passed in April so that was a gigantic win um and something that we have worked incredibly hard with the school liaison at Luke Air Force Base to make Luke Elementary a place where everybody coming to Luke Air Force wants to come um so again our successes it kind of piggybacks on what I was just talking about but our successes um being that purple star school and developing our school leaders we have a student ambassador program that supports our students in transition and not just students in military but any students that are transitioning in and out of Luke Elementary so what is it about Luke not to make sure that not every not a student doesn't come to school and eat lunch by themselves or play alone

at recess our second grade team um brought a project to us that is in alignment with their social studies content right now to Bringing buddy benches um to schools and they're designing those and they're talking about the importance of inclusion for all and making that transition to our community a positive one um last year um one of our community members nominated us for best of the desert um as a public school and it was because of the culture and the feel that they feel that support on our campus um and we were named The Best of the Desert School in June for the West Valley um and that was a huge just honor and privilege and and again just a a testament to the community and the staff and the students um that are at

Luke some of the challenges um that we um run into that are we we look at them as their opportunities for learning or opportunities for growth um we have had an increase in enrollment and which means an increase in Staffing and it's bringing staff on that understand the military um community and the military specific needs so what does it look like when we have students who are transitioning in and out how do we support them um we have a strategic plan for student attendance so we are increased our daily rate by about 2% so far this year um and that is through attendance calendars and just incentivizing students and parent conversations and conferences and and talking about how important school is but then also making it a safe place where students want to be um

and then our last challenge is increasing our growth to be at 1.0 we were just shy underneath of that for our growth so that is is my presentation for tonight any questions I think that was an amazing presentation I appreciate that that was a hard one to follow well the the one I was just you you're so um enthusiastic and your energy behind your words is just captivating in a lot of ways and I'm sure that spreads out throughout your campus and so I think that's a lot of the reason too why you're doing so well over there so I appreciate I appreciate your enthusiasm for all the learning and everything that's going on on your on your campus and I just want wanted to say too I appreciate you making um one of your

academic goals about ESS students I feel like so so many times um our ESS students aren't always I don't want to say for remembered forgotten prioritized you know as often um and the fact that you've included that population in your academic goals just really speaks to my heart so I appreciate that but yeah congratulations on everything you're doing it sounds wonderful thank you so much thank you I will also say thank you real quick sorry before you go um I just appreciate the lot Community the school really taking care of our military families it just they serve our country and it's it's you don't understand if you haven't actually lived it firsthand so I just want to say thank you to you and your staff for really really trying to take care of our students

absolutely absolutely it's it is the most humbling privilege I've had um and it's it's an honor thank you ditto to everything everyone else has said um I wondered a little bit though on your challenges slide when you say onboarding teachers who understand the loot uh military Community um what does that look like are are you able to do like recruiting efforts you know through like a liaison on base I mean yes what does that look like well um right now I have a sixth grade science teacher who retired in June um after 23 years of service his wife is a Kinder teacher and he said to me about a year ago um well yeah about a year ago if I ever am deployed or if they ever moove me I'm going to punch the button

and I'm going to come teach for you and I was like let me know Mr Loop um and he in May is was like hey I'm getting into a program um and so we work really closely with Stacy Holland she is an honor to work with um and we recruit I have a lot of military spouses that that are Paras right now they want to they want to work while they're here um and so we onboard them they start off as like volunteering and then they're like hey I really like it here I love that so one just started on Tuesday that's amazing it's a great opportunity yeah and I I I just so appreciate you giving us an update on the purple star school too I'm glad so glad to see that that's going

well yes okay thank you you good job okay thank you [Applause] okay next up we have item G3 Dr Coto thank you madam president uh as you heard from our two schools tonight uh we have uh some a through F letter grades to share with you and we have some great news and and some more excitement for our district and Dr Longoria is going to come up and present this for us good evening Madame President members of the board and cabinet I don't know how I'm shorter than Caris but apparently I am um I get the great job of presenting to you our final official labels for the 23 24 school year so up first here are our K8 School letter grades for the past 5 years and as you can see for the first

time we have zero C schools 100% of our schools are A's or B's 14 of our schools are A's and um six of our schools received a b looking at our high schools um continued good news so here are our past eight years or eight years five years of um School letter grades in our high schools and for two years in a row 100% of our high schools are a-rated here are letter grades by school for the past two years in our k8s three of our schools went from an A to a B 12 maintained their label and four have improved their label one even increased two letter grades no surprise here all four of our high schools for the past two years are all A's which means our district remains an A and then

finally how we compare to districts around us uh five of our surrounding districts are also a-rated and five are b-rated and with that I'll stand for any questions I think it's amazing news my goodness especially to to not have any any SE schools that's just so exciting to to see that we're here um amazing that diart middle I mean they came a long way coming up to that a um and would also just like to thank Scott Kerr and all the work he's doing at Thompson Ranch um you know he volun told or actually volunteered to go over there um and it there were some challenges you know at that school and and and now they're a b so I mean all of our schools have done so much work whether you're just maintaining your

a or you've done what you've needed to do to get your gr up um I just I'm just really thankful to um Dr croo and our Administration and our teachers and everyone who I mean everyone has had a hand in this you know we all get there together but definitely um just your leadership and your just No Nonsense approach to doing what's right by kids and continuing to just aim high I just I'm very proud to be a part of this district and thankful to everybody who who helped um shape this to what it is today so exciting news yes thank you for sharing this is definitely something to celebrate you know I feel like there's always growth there's always still more room room to grow and there's always still things we can get better

at but it just we've also got to celebrate the winds right and this is a very huge win looking at that first slide going from 3 A's in the 1718 school year 14 BS and 2 C's now we've got it's like we we swapped them almost you know now we've got 14a and 6bs and we've got all our high schools are a schools and we've got a Blue Ribbon School like it's just it takes everybody's hard work students teachers administrators support staff it's it's it's really great to see and it's just so it's just so cool to see all the growth that we've had and to it it feels really good to celebrate these successes so and thank you for pulling this data for us absolutely I also want to say thank you to everyone

the entire District staff teachers students even the parents you know our community this is wonderful just thank you to everybody and the administration the board you know it takes everybody so thank you if I could Madam president um obviously we have an amazing faculty staff students as everybody saying a lot of that goes to them we have amazing Administration our principles um what they do each and every day in our schools um but we're we'd be remissed too without thanking this governing board for backing us in our professional development and everything we're doing to make this happen we've promised that we will get 24 A's and we're on our way and so um it's the five of you that believed in where we're going and what we do and the things and backing us and

all that professional development get there so it you're right it does take a team and that is all of us um and I just thank you to everybody everybody is doing an amazing job and they continue they won't stop so 24 is our goal and that's where we're going to be so thank you thank you I also just want to add sorry I do this every time I always leave to early I agree that this is a huge celebration I thank you Dr Cotto for thanking the board for this but I I know that a lot of the work you know has been done by our staff um but it's as far as the the the concept the the professional development I mean you that was all you who brought that um to life so

I Believe in Your Vision and I thank you for your leadership as you've LED this change for dice art um all for the better and I you know I look forward to seeing how far we can go um hopefully we'll get you know to all A's pretty soon I know I know we will so thank you okay uh moving on to item H1 Dr croo thank you madam president um tonight Administration is bringing to the governing board um an item um to move um our governing board meeting schedule um back to Wednesday nights um currently in in Thursday oh no today today is yes that's okay um from Thursday to Wednesday um and uh there's rationale why we're asking and we're we're asking to do this in January um to go back to the Wednesday

night uh we've gone to Thursdays we've made that work it has been very difficult um to conduct business on Thursdays for for a few reasons um a lot of our Sports and performances and and we have conflicts with them um when we're on Thursday nights so a lot of those things happen on Thursday nights in our schools um and pulling some of our administrators and doing that um as you know in the summer we go to 410 so that really is um the end of the work week so anything we need to do from the board meeting um and get done that has to wait all the way until Monday um I think sometimes we have communication challenges um when to push out necessary uh uh communication when we're late on the Thursday night and

get to Friday and things are happening Friday and typically may not happen um a lot of us are trying to catch things up on Friday so emails may go unread till Monday so just that flow of business um able to do things um if we need a direction or something done from our Administration from the governing board or we have tasks that makes it very difficult with just Friday and Fridays can be hectic you know that on our campus um another big piece is uh by law that our meeting minutes have to be done um 72 hours afterwards so that really pushes that up for for Jenna who does an amazing job with it but that leaves a Friday afternoon for her to get that done often going into the weekends she gets it done

she doesn't complain but um it is a difficult piece for her to do and and um you know it gives just an extra day gives an extra day get that done and make that happen without having to take up her weekends and then the last piece I'll just highlight and stand for any questions or comments um is at our awesome PR department you know we ask them to come and live stream and do all that um and that pulls them away from that first bullet of trying to go out and highlight our performances and our our conflicts and our Sports because they're here to do the important piece of streamlining uh these board meetings so with that in mind um we just ask that we could go back starting in January to Wednesday governing board
