want to take this time also to thank our B staff our judges our AGL grease saver denee Marinelli and Holly Johnson which are right up here and our be assistant who greeted you at the door Deb isherwood and Melody Yost so thank you to them thanks Deb it takes a lot to put this together but we are so glad we do and we're so excited for all of you before I re review all of the rules I want to take this time to turn this over to our amazing superintendent Dr Jim Dean good morning to each of you I typically don't need a microphone but since we're live streaming today um the microphone it is we want to thank you for coming out to support your children and the students in your school for the

principals that are in the room and assistant principals as well congratulations to all of you we look forward to your opportunity to compete today and we celebrate your success at the school level as well parents I'm sure that in the last couple of days last couple of weeks you may have heard a lot of words being spelled by your kids as they have practice for this day and we look forward to this as somebody who still can't spell to this day I envy everybody up here I Rely solely on spell check to get me through the through the world and these are like the human spell checks right here so congratulations to each and every one of you good luck today it's going to be a great day the most important thing is that you

enjoy the opportunity and that you get the cookies at the end and by the way that's c-o-o-k-i-e-s cookies all right again congratulations and without further Ado let's get this thing going Dana thank you thank you appreciate it I did leave off one important person and that is our pronouncer who none of us wanted this job and she loves this so thank you Jen shernikoff for um doing the pronouncer job so thank you so just relax now I have quite a few rules so students you're going to need to listen to the rules I will read them as uh slowly and carefully so you hear them all and parents so that you're aware of all the rules as well there's a lot so just relax rule one in competition after the pronouncer gives the contestant a

word the contestant will be encouraged to pronounce the word before spelling it and after spelling it however no contestant will be eliminated for failing to pronounce a word but the contestant must spell the word that is pronounced while the judges attempt to detect a speller's misunderstanding it is sometimes impossible to detect a misunderstanding until a spelling error has been made the judges are not responsible for the spellers misunderstanding the contestant May request the pronouncer to pronounce the word again Define it or use it in a sentence the contestant may ask for the language origin of a word no other information about the etymology of the history of a word will be be given the pronouncer will not entertain root word questions requests for alternate definitions or requests for markedly slower pronunciation the pronouncer shall Grant

all such requests until the judges agree that the word has been made reasonably clear to the contestant the judges May disqualify any contestant who ignores a request to start spelling the judges may also disqualify a speller a who does not approach the microphone when it is time to receive the word b who engages in unsportsmanlike conduct or C who it who in the process of spelling utters unintelligible or nonsense words rule three the role of the pronouncer is to correctly pronounce the word the pronouncer will give a sentence a definition and other information about the word at the speller's request if the contestant thinks the word may be pronounced differently the contestant must provide the alternate pronunciation and ask if the dictionary list of the pronunciation provided by the contestant the role of the judges

is to determine whether the contestant has spelled the word correctly the role of the speller is to gather as much information as possible to help spell the word correctly and to spell the word correctly if it is the speller's responsibility to understand the word the judges may not disqualify speller for asking a question four a contestant starting to spell a word must stop and start over rechasing the spelling from the beginning but in retracing there can be no change of letters or their sequence from those first pronounced if letters are a change or the sequence is changed in the respelling the speller will be eliminated rule five the spelling bee shall be conducted in rounds each contestant remaining in the B at the start of the round shall spell one word in the round until

we get down to the last two contestants rule six upon missing the spelling of a word a bell will be wrong and a consistent contestant immediately drops out of the contest until we get down to the last two contestants then the rules will change and I will come back and read those rules if a word has one or more homonyms the pronouncer will indicate which of these is to be spelled if the listed word is not properly identify either by defining it or by distinguishing the homonyms any correct spelling word of the homonym will be accepted the speller not shall not be disqualified for failing to note that a word is capitalized any question relating to the spelling of the word will be referred to miss ish Miss isherword in appeal form must be submitted

to her by the end of that round the deadline for filling an appeal is before the speller affected would have received his or her next word and he or she stayed in the competition when only two spellers remain an appeal must be made immediately that is before a misspelled word is given to another contestant an appeal would state that the word in question the name of the speller and the reason for the protest the judges are in complete control of the bee their decision shall be final on all questions when the number of spellers is reduced to two the elimination procedure changes and I will come up to the podium to read that again remember to please turn off your cell phones thank you and Miss chernikoff will get us started good luck thank you
