001[Music] good morning welcome to the annual Dysart spelling bee district spelling bee we're going to congratulate all of our school winners I know you're a little nervous but we are very proud of you and no matter what the outcome is today you've done a great job so you can pat yourself on the back and we can give them a round of applause again we want to welcome you I am Adria gray/silver I'm the literacy coordinator for Dysart and I want to do some quick introductions to my left here we have Donahue's she is a retired secretary here from Dysart she is one of our judges also we have Jo Steinberg who is a 21st century skill specialist and we have a so Peggy Gregory who has retired but used to run this spelling bee and
002is filling in as a judge today so we think her for being here we have our hostess for today miss Lisa Hanna moon if you can raise your hand Lisa and kiddos you want to make sure you know who Lisa is because there's gonna be some directions for you to go to her later today also and we have Emily Lopez who helped was instrumental in setting everything up today and ordering things also we want to recognize Carol Bell she couldn't be here today she's one of our secretaries that worked really hard on making sure this was all set up and ready to go for us we also need to recognize Connie Ferguson Connie is a 21st century skill specialist and Connie has taken the place of Peggy Gregory and running spelling bee so we're gonna
003thank her for all her hard work also if we have any school building administrators would you please stand up and others quite a few here today thank you for attending and also we can reduce dr. polling he is one of our assistant superintendents and he just wants to say a few words to our students and can I kick off our spelling bee so dr. Polly [Applause] I think it says I'm special to compete takes a lot to put yourselves out there and say I'm glad you're here but for students I just want to say congratulations for being here you compete at this level and now you're here at the district level and that's really exciting it's a great accomplishment so graduations on okay I have a list of rules that I'm going to read to
004our Spelling Bee participants and then we are when we get down to our last two students that are in the B on the final round I will the rules will change so I will be coming back up to read the new rules that will apply so at this point we have everyone following the same rules because we're just starting the beasts so participants I'm going to read directly to you so listen closely in competition after the pronounce er gives the contestant word the contestant will be encouraged to pronounce the word before spelling it and after spelling it however no contestant will be eliminated for failing to pronounce a word but the contestant must spell the word that is pronounced while the judges attempt to detect a spellers misunderstanding it is sometimes impossible to detect a
005misunderstanding until a speller error has been made the judges are not responsible for the spellers misunderstanding the contestant may request the pronounce er to pronounce the word again define it or use it in a sentence the contestant may ask for the language origin of a word no other information about the etymology or history of a word will be given the pronounce er will not entertain root word questions or requests for alternate definitions or requests for markedly slower pronunciation the pronounce er shall grant all such requests until the judges agree that the word has been made reasonably clear to the contestant the judges may disqualify any contestant who ignores a request to start spelling the judges may also disqualify a speller a who does not approach the microphone when it is time to receive the would
006be who does not comply with the eligibility requirements see who engages in unsportsmanlike conduct or D who in the process of spelling utters unintelligible or nonsense sounds the role of the pronounce er is to correctly pronounce the word the pronounce er will give a sentence definition and other information about the word at the spellers request the role of the judges is to determine whether the contestant has spelled the word correctly the role of the speller is a to gather as much information as possible to help spell the word correctly and B to spell the word correctly it is the spellers responsibility to understand the word is qualify a speller for asking a question a contestant studying to spell a word may stop and start over retracing the spelling from the beginning but in retracing there
007can be no change of letters or their sequence from those first pronounced if letters or their sequence are changed in the respec the speller will be eliminated the spelling bee shall be conducted in rounds each contestant remaining in the B at the start of around shall spell one word in the round except as provided when we get down to two spellers the final - upon missing the spelling of a word a contestant immediately drops out of the contest and the next word is giving given to the next contestant and for when there is when you miss the word and the bell rings we'll have a bell that will ring you will actually just step over to miss Lisa Hanneman in the pink and she will have stuck for you and then there will be seating
