001e e e all right welcome back everybody uh like to welcome everybody to tonight's uh work study and and brief board business meeting like to thank everybody that's here in attendance and the millions and millions of people that are watching uh remotely throughout the world um let's go ahead and call this meeting to order and we'll ask uh oh no we won't take roll call or do we take roll call not yet okay so we're going to start out with agenda item 3.01 artificial intelligence Dr record thank you Mr Thompson governing board members uh today we have for you uh Sean and John from technology Services uh they're going to talk to you tonight about artificial intelligence kind of what it means in education and and really what it isn't but that's about as far

002as I get to go with this subject because you guys are the experts so I'll turn it over to you thank you guys for being here yeah thank you thank you for having us uh Mr Thompson members of the board Dr McCord um yeah we're excited to be here um you know ai's been such a buzzword for almost two years now and um we wanted to just get in front of you and let you kind of know what we're doing and the steps that we're taking and um how we're going to kind of tackle this uh this new technology fund um as always I want to thank the technology staff um when I have this opportunity to we really we pulled a lot of data and we had over 26,000 uh help Des tickets last

003school year um and that's not to mention all the phone calls and the emails and all so um we were busy um so it's great to be able to go back and look at that data through our help desk and really know where we can improve and how we can help people better so just want to give a shout out to them um when I was sitting down trying to figure out how to um open tonight um I obviously wrote wrote some stuff up and I used to kind of think I was a decent writer um but you know when you run stuff through AI to see how they suggest you write it um it always makes you kind of stop for a second and and it humbles you a little bit because usually it

004sounds a whole lot better um so I did that tonight I'm sure you already read on the on the slideshow but um this was a much much better opening about AI right um so I'm not going to read this but um one of the the beautiful things of of of of Google Gemini is it tells you what it changed right and and how it changed it and and you don't have to agree with it or not but um I like that aspect of it so um as we go through the present ation tonight most of this uh majority of the presentation was put together using AI obviously our content um but we use the resources that we have as well so I think that'll be kind of fun to to point out to all of

005you uh as well as we go through this um I'm going to turn it over to Sean we're just gonna uh back and forth on these slides so um Sean introduce yourself first please sorry hi I'm Sean ay I'm the instructional technology coordinator um so AI has been around for longer than chat gbt AI is part of Netflix um I'm sure your news feed is not showing Detroit Lions stuff that's AI um it's in uh learning platforms it's been in a lot of things and it hasn't been until the open AI in cat gbt that it became so incredibly popular and newsworthy so it's in a lot of the things already what it's not is a replacement for humans and human thinking um it does a lot of things for us but you still that

006human aspect in order for it to work properly so um the this list was generated through AI I just asked AI what it is and what it isn't and these are the things that it came up with but it isn't all of the things that um you're currently using the little chat bot and almost every platform that you go to is AI um the social media advertising AI so AI is everywhere AI is everywhere it's a great C so are we we have the infrastructure AI needs and now the breath of data AI craves we'll use AI to help the world see more do more and we'll secure it like never [Music] before you've all heard the AI [Music] hype now you want ai's [Music] help that's exactly what we'll give you Cisco making AI

007work for [Music] you so I actually took that at the end of maybe beginning of June I went with the network team to Cisco live um and obviously AI was a large part of the conference and the CEO from Cisco you know basically said if we don't do this someone else will and so there's no stopping this whether it's from a business perspective um it will be embedded in every piece of software um that is released um because it does help with uh do many things within the software itself so that was the whole point of that um it will be embedded it will be embedded in our micro oft platform and our Google platform whatever piece of software I guarantee you they are working on if not already have implemented AI because they have

008to right if they don't others will and if they see uh that it's makes it that much better then from a business perspective that's where you're going to gravitate to so it it's not it's not uh it's not going away was really uh the point in that now just so you know at this point um AI platforms are blocked to our students uh districtwide except for very small um number of students at the high school and we'll explain that later more at the end of the presentation um but it is wide open for staff so just so kind of lay that ground right there so you know uh that so you know what what what what do we do I mean like I said it's been a couple years now that um we've been talking

009and and working and trying to figure out what direction to go and purposely you know we've said in the tech services bar we want to take a slowburn approach to this like let let's watch things develop let's see what happens let's wait for state and National guidance to start to emerge and we'll talk a little bit about that because it has observe what our TI team that's Sean's team uh what they're doing with AI you know see how the different companies start to integrate it um and then engage with our uh curriculum and instruction Department which we have and we've been to some events with them at the end of the day this is affecting what goes on in the classroom so it most certainly is a curriculum thing right it's just not this Tech

010thing that's shiny and sits out there this will be embedded in the software that we're using uh and in the classroom so we work well with them we've engaged them and we've been working with them and then we wanted to pull together our Tech advisory committee and kind of go to work on this and that's what we've done so we're going to walk you through what we've done with them feel free to jump in and ask questions uh at any time so our our technology advisory committee it is made up of Administrators teachers um tech people uh uh Tech staff um we got a pretty good group group that's been together for over a year now and so we wanted to bring them together but we just didn't want to bring them together and just

011throw at AI what do we do it had to be more structured in that so tji is a group out there and all those organizations um worked with tji and they put out a guidance AI guidance schools toolkit basically all that toolkit is just guidance right they had different categories um different um perspectives on AA different hey this is what you should do you should have guidelines you you have professional development Etc and so we we looked closely at that and then we wanted to break it down when we brought the T the TAC team in we didn't want to just again throw out there and see where it goes so we broke it down into four different areas and those are the bullet points you see there so data privacy and ethical use teaching

012and learning organizational learning and academic integrity and so we brought those four groups in we used papers and markers split up into four groups and we tackled each of those areas and then let them kind of go to town with very little guidance on what they thought that they would like to see for guidelines underneath each of those four categories so that's what we did we did that uh back in January um the whole group got to um provide feedback on all the different areas not just their own and then we took that and uh I had Donna Le back at the office took all those pieces of butcher paper we put it all uh into a document um ran it through AI multiple multiple times to try to come up with a basic set

013of guidelines that then we could send back to the TAC for feedback and and we're going to share those with you um but that's what we did in the meantime um the Arizona Institute for Ed and the economy and na um they got a group of people together and they used six different schools from around um the state um and they put together AI guidance for Arizona School so similar to the tji but a little more specific um um to the state and they released that it's been at least four or so months ago that they released that so we went to the kickoff of that we looked at that then we sent that back to the T committee and say hey this guidance is out take a look at it see where we need

014to adjust if if we do it all on the guidelines that we've put together um and so that's what we did so we put all that together with all their feedback and now we kind of started talking about w okay action steps because we didn't want to just bring guidelines out with nothing behind it to do and so that's that's what we've done so we're going to go through these we're not going to read these for verbatim we um we bolded um some different areas um but this is basically all the content here was generated by the TAC and then put together um using Ai and then tweaked as we went so there's some pieces in here if you have questions you can ask about but we bolded some of the some of the big

015areas obviously data privacy is is Big with this right if we're putting data into something where is that data going what are they doing with it Etc just like we do with any piece of software in the school district um Sean jump in at any time if you want to point out anything on these um but we just want to be we have to be transparent with the use of AI right if we were just to open this up all to the students just you know here you go that that won't work we have to work with our staff first so teaching and learning area obviously that's that's huge um we we don't just want to open up all resources we need to be um we need to take the time to talk about what

016the best tool might be for students and teachers to use um and have vetted resources to put out there uh and it obviously has to keep the Integrity of the district to proove curriculum right because again with AI you can take anything and throw it in there and see what it says about it right but we can't lose that that Integrity of our curriculum that we have now we worked very hard and the curriculum department has worked very hard too um to maintain that we have to continually review this obviously you know with technology things change continually so nothing will stay the same it'll keep evolving our other area of guidance organizational learning um we're going to talk to you a little bit Sean's going to talk to you about what uh We've started to

017do already with our staff um but but that's huge right if if we're going to have guidance out there we want to be able to support it and remember it's just it's a guideline right but we want to be able to help with that and keep it obviously aligned always with our educational goals standards and our in our sh that's in place academic Integrity obviously this comes up but this has come up since the beginning of time right they have the internet and Google and search and and you know and what what are we what are we doing with what are our students doing with it so we can't forget that um if we do Implement AI in the classroom we can't forget the student piece like how are we going to talk to the

018students about AI how are the teachers going to know how to guide them in their use how can we possibly control parts of it in the classroom so you know what tool are we going to use um but we have to integrate it in into our existing digital citizenship type uh program and we we'll show you how we plan to do that but we need clear guidance right it can't be the Wild Wild West um I think the reason that um we saw so many groups kind of jump to to action on AI because before I don't know that we really did that right so with social media with with everything technology and it seems like people want to get ahead of AI a little bit to provide this guidance and so that's that's refreshing

019as well can I just ask a question especially because that was one of the questions I had in my mind was um academic integrity and plagiarism and um avoiding I mean we want we want to teach students how to think and how to write because writing is communicating um but as you said sometimes you can use AI to help with the writing so can you address that issue a little bit how we're going to um deal with that talk so um it's no different than our students using Google for research or any of the other tools that they currently have available or back in my day just copying it from the encyclopedia right yes I remember that it the the kids are going to do what they do regardless of the tools that they have

020available to them so it what we are doing is vetting the the resources that are available to see how we can use those to stop some of those things so some of them that we've seen will give a complete um transcript of everything that the student has put into AI so more so than like Google it'll give a complete transcript of the things that they've asked and all of the response that AI gave so if I if a teacher were to feel like this feels like it might be plagiarized then they can look at this and look directly at the stuff that came out of the AI search engine to be able to see those the similarities or to find out that wow this kid really does know how to write well so there's some

021things in place and we're looking at all those things while we're vetting the the applications but is that only if they're we have that information only if they're connected to our correct uh well through some of the systems are just through ours okay the ones that we would that we are looking at mostly and and hoping to recommend in the future um but the kids that are using things at home there's absolutely no way to stop them from using them on their phones or their personal devices or their Xbox or whatever it is that they use to search the internet that's why we want to teach them how to use it responsibly right our students are already using it what devic is you know their choice but it's not our school devices what current software

022do we have for plagiarism like turn it in like what do we have yeah so some some schools use turn it in um there's a Google product that some schools have used as well oh so we're not it's not the same across the board in the district no and to be honest those tools aren't always that good um there's tools that claim that they you can run text through they'll tell you if they're a or not but they're not uh they're not there quite honestly and they don't get it right is there software coming down the pipeline that's going to to be better than a turn aan in your opinion I I doubt that they'll ever be able to find something that can keep up with AI to find out if it's if it's a

023plagiarized document like even the turn it inss can't find all of the information that students find even on Google or whatever it is to find out if it's completely plagiarized or not so so some of them are effective but nothing is 100% foolproof that's when it's up to the teachers that that's that human aspect right where you can't get rid of the humans in any situation because it's up to the teachers to be able to know those students and know like you can really write better than this and then find out that you know that it was copied and pasted or I don't feel like you write this well so and then having those conversations with the kids so there's nothing that's going to completely stop it that's where that human element comes in right

024and I understand that I know even students who have written in their own you know without any assistance from Google still get flagged for plagiarism so you just never know but I was just curious what our schools had and if anybody any schools were using or any like turn it in can I just take a moment we're getting a lot of feedback those that aren't speaking make sure that their microphones are off that might help thank you any other yeah it got really silent there um so so what are we doing so we we'll we'll kind of talk through now um um those steps and and again I'm going to let Sean keep talking about this one she's really been uh key to making this happen so obviously when you're talking about Ai and bringing

025it into classrooms we want our staff to be educated first um so what we've done is we first looked at some of the guidance that that other um other districts have done to be able to present those to students to show them and we'll show you us we'll show you that to you in just a second but that acceptable use of AI in the classroom so when is it acceptable and what does that look like for students um my team is currently in the process of creating professional development that will go to all um teaching staff throughout the district so that they can be better prepared to um use it personally effectively and in the right way and then also be able to teach our students in the future because I mean obviously this is

026something that is definitely not going away and we want to be able to teach the kids how to use it effectively and appropriately and they're not necessarily learning that just on their phones so the um professional development the initial one will cover things like what is AI um the appropriate tools and some of those those issues that we didn't think about when we first started using AI that came about as we started to learn more and more about um platforms and what they do so we want to be able to give the teachers that Insight before that they're doing things inappropriately and inappropriately meaning like copying and pasting complete texts into um an AI thing like that's a copyright violation which you don't think about when you're like look at this cool tool the first

027time so we want to be able to educate our staff before we turn this over to students and then lastly we will um go through the vetted tools and share those with our staff through newsletters through um oneon-one at plc's um through additional professional development as the sites uh request or we see the need so as far as students um we want each grade level to have a a small lesson in Ai and I know that it starts in sixth grade and goes through 12th um again we're not it's not open to our students now but we need to educate them so that when the Tool are available to them they're prepared and know how to use them um so each of these are like 15 to 20 minute lessons that can be delivered right

028in the classrooms and it's one lesson in the year and it goes from sixth grade through 12th uh because younger than that they're using they're learning to use Tech tools individually and then um these lessons from Common Sense started from 6 through 12 so every school um has a different model on how they deliver those Common Sense lessons yeah so some is classroom some is the um certain times at the high school in their day and but they all have the autonomy to yeah schedule that on their own so this is an example of the visual that uh we created with um we we modeled it after another one and you can see on the bottom that we credited them um and this is something that teachers could have in their classrooms or give to

029students that lets them know that the red light is it's absolutely not approved on this assignment you can't use AI yellow light you can use it for these purposes and then the green light is go ahead and use it for everything that has to do with this assignment but it's just a nice way to be able to have that visual for teachers to provide that information to students on the appropriate use of it in the classroom last spring um we had had a teacher from one of our high schools reach out um and they let us know that the new descriptor of the AP research and seminar Capstone actually had AI for the first time written in it so and that's a that's a small piece of it there on that slide um so they

030were just inquiring you know what should we use what should we do um so we we spent quite a bit of time figuring out well how how are we going to do this do we have to open this up to the whole District or just the high school like how can we do this and still keep it um controlled for now um so um our our our Network and S admin team they were able to work with our content filter and our student information system and figure out how we could do that um so just right now um those um students in those classes in this research and Capstone do have access to the tool that was chosen and then um Sean's team reached out and she reached out and we've worked with that small

031group of teachers and there's some more we still need to work with on the tool for them to use with the students so it's a very controlled pilot if you will if you want to call it that um and then obviously a curriculum and our department is going to keep close track of that and just see how it how it works and how it goes and get their feedback um because teachers are already asking for this because they want to use it in their classroom with students and that's a that's a good thing I think it's going to grow very quickly though and so we want to be ready for that and decide how to do that um the the the tool that we're using now it's free for now but it is not going

032to be it's that typical you know I mean Google was free for years and there's not anym to us but that was a lot of years this is not going to be that they will monetize all this that's just how it works right um so so I I don't know how long that will be free but what Sean was talking about earlier though it's very controlled it you want to talk a little bit to some of those features so the program has a teacher console that you set up a classroom so as a teacher I would set up a classroom and I invite the students into it using a code either a link or a QR code it can be put in their Google Classroom so the students um join it by clicking on the

033link or going to the um or entering the code and the only information that they provide is their name so as a teacher I would just indicate to them to just put in your first name um everyone's question then is well what if they put in funny names well then you kick them out and tell them you can use this when you want to put your name in appropriately so um one once they're in there you can control when they can actually use this tool so what we've done in the AP research and seminar classes is they're only allowed to use it during that class while under teacher supervision so you can pause the class so when a kid goes to that um that link again to utilize the tools then it says this this

034is paused for now you can't use it or you can completely lock it so that they can't access they know that it's done um so it it's only able to be used during those classes and the other thing with with this particular application is you can choose the tools that you want the students to use so there's some fun things in there like it'll create um it'll create uh song lyrics so you could have a rap battle that's how they like they introduced it in one of the classes um but it has like the chatbot it has uh feedback forms but as the instructor I can assign only the ones that I want them to to use and you can assign different ones for different class periods and you can pause this one and have

035kids come into a different one and use different tools as you see um effective for the lessons that you're teaching them so it's a pretty powerful tool and um and and really gives the the teacher a lot of control so that students aren't able to access that from outside of on our devices anyways from outside of um those hours that the teachers allow it yeah so it's we have options um I know you don't are not all familiar but with our content filter system you know we're grouped High School junior high you know 46 and and primary so so we do have options there if we do ever decide okay it's time let's open up this tool then we can do it that way so that does give us some good options there so I

036feel like we have a good system a solid system in place again the guidelines you guys are seeing them for the first time and then we will get those out there as well as Sean's team starts working with the schools and then kind of just see how it goes that's kind of where we're at and kind of what we have to do with this there's nothing um set in stone with this it's ever evolving as you know and and we're going to be here to support the students and and the teachers with this so it's all we have unless you have other questions for us about um bias um I know that that's been part of the challenge you know it's it's a tool and our human bies are built into this tool so can

037you address that issue of um dealing with the bias that also can be an AI so uh than you we're our job is to educate people again let them know that these things do exist and um again like Wikipedia if you were to use Wikipedia you look at it for the information and the resource and where you're going to go from there so when you find these when you find these um the the information back from chat gbt or any of these generative AIS you have to go back and use your human brain to go through that information so that's why we want to be able to teach the kids that they need to know these things going into it so that they're not taking this all as fact okay all right thank you um

038I I appreciate this and looking forward to seeing how this rolls out and how we can be effective in using this with our students and staff like you know I always ask for uh getting parent feedback I don't know what would be the best way maybe maybe the parent superintendent Council maybe if you gave a presentation like this just to say what are like some you know just a few things that we should be looking at as well just to so that we're not so that we're involving as many as we can and then giving you know I can't I know that we're kind of some of us are parents too in the schools and so like I know the board is also a source of that and I'm trying to think of offand I

039don't have any I don't have anything that I'm that I'm going to give to you right now I'll be thinking about it but yeah we need to we had um two parents on our on our T committee did okay we need to get more on there though because they're know they dropped off right so that has been so we do need to do that so we have ongoing parents on there so um but but yes that would be a great Forum to to present this to as well just to get some initial things of just cuz parents are trying to figure this out too and see how does this how can we help how can we be educated and help our students how are how is the district trying to do it so I think

040it only helps us if we have that feedback so thank you this is great yeah for sure thank you that was the main thing I was going to follow up on and I was even going to suggest that I think this is very confusing to parents um what AI is and how it's being integrated into the schools um I still don't know if I have a clear wrapping my head around all of this because it is so rapidly changing all the time um so just a suggestion we might need some type of a presentation email online presentation for any parent in the district to access what exactly this AI um and how it's going to be uh regulated in our district so I think the more information we get out to parents the better it

041would be thank and thank you for your presentation and thank you for your ongoing work cuz it is ongoing I mean just changes every day so I've got a couple questions one of them has to do with with uh parental input so I'll start there um would we need parental approval for kids since this is such a new technology and in some circles a controversial technology would we would it be smart of us to get parental approval or is that just opening a can of worms that that we don't necessarily want to open I wouldn't necessarily say that it's it's a can of worms I think it's it's a piece of technology and I think it's an extension of the internet I guess the best way to put it and so we already allow that

042we could probably in our user agreement put something in there letting them know that AI is is in use and you know by them signing off on that they understand that there are fences around it but yet they have to work with inside those those fences so that would be my thought yeah I agree there there is ver we don't call AI out specifically there is verbage in in the in the user agreement that Tech so yeah but but yeah I I I think the term AI just scares people and and if you've been on the internet and you see what people write about AI one way or the other I I think it as a parent I could be a little intimidated by that I could be a little upset but I think you

043guys said it like it's the unknown like my thought of AI right now is chat GPT right write me a speech about AI you know and it'll crank something out and it'll look great and it sounds great but it's so so much more as John likes to point out to me and I didn't realize and I don't realize that that it's integrated into so many things already that we probably don't realize or take for granted and so I think what really scares people is what it can what it can do on a grand scale and so you know we're pairing it down to what it can do for us for education and that's where we want to work within but it's like anything else right um if if you if you don't put up those

044fences again people will just walk through um but we have to as an educational system put uh safeguards in place for students but also like Sean said educate them educate the teachers about what it is and how useful it can be but yet the pitfalls that are related to it so so my next question is kind of a continuation of a question that Miss Humphrey's asked in regard to bias um and Sean you'd said that uh it would be I think and I'm paraphrasing and please correct me if I get this wrong but um almost the responsibility of the student to know if they're being if something is generated that that is affected by human bias that it would be up to the student to be able to figure that out and in in a

045lot of cases I don't think students would have the ability to know if they were being influenced by someone's personal bias through this tool and so it seems like there would need to be a safeguard on a on a on a teacher level so that the students aren't being uh aren't being taught things that aren't necessarily historically or factually accurate uh because of that human bias so what what would you say I guess how would you if you could maybe expand your answer a little bit that would be helpful so I apologize I maybe I wasn't clear um I would never leave this up to students to figure out they're teenagers they're not going to figure it out I think that that's part of the reason why it's very important that we educate our teaching

046staff first so that they're able to identify these bias in in the responses that they get because it really has to do with the prompts that you put in right so if we're teaching our teachers how to put in effective prompts then they can effectively teach our students how to do that as well if we're teaching our teachers how to identify bias in the responses then they can teach their students how to do that as well but that's why it's got to all start with us educating the teachers and all of these things thank you um my next question is with integration is this something that can be let me back up so as many students have and parents noticed on the first day back at school their signs all over all of our campuses

047you know no cell Bell to Bell so we're encouraging students to put the phones away we're encouraging teachers not to uh not to uh well I don't know if we're requiring but we're or encouraging but um I think teachers are are cognizant of the fact that the district wants there to be no cell no cell phones in the classroom um can our current infrastructure can we integrate this with our current infrastructure or will there need to be an infrastructure upgrade in order to implement this no we won't need to upgrade anything I think a lot about what you hear about um you know on the news or in the business World it takes more compute to make AI happen meaning more Prof processing on the back end of things right so on those servers where

048the the stuff is happening takes more power more electricity more higher and processors right and that's of course you've been probably reading about in the tech World everyone racing to create those processors to to do that and to handle that our infrastructure itself no it's our internet connection right is is what so we just have to watch that um and we have watched it this year we've spiked a couple times and come close to our our capacity so we always watch that though and then we see what's going going on that day I don't think AI is going to push us that to push that it's more you know well the holders was testing one day or what's going on so we look at those anomalies but uh right now no we may we may

049have to have a bigger pipe to the internet eventually down the road but I wouldn't say it's because of AI thank you uh again on implementation is this something that uh that the district's it group um can train teachers and staff on or will we need to hire um outside experts to come in and facilitate training no um the technology integration Educators a taii team best on the planet and they'll be the ones they'll be the ones that would uh deliver those trainings at the schools so we'll do professional development for full staff and then follow up with the individual groups and plc's or one-on-one as those needs arise and then do additional trainings as the um campus's request I'm glad to hear you say that about our Tha group and I'm sure they're they

050appreciate that as well I know that they work hard we know that they work hard I think that might [Music] be uh all but one of my questions um do you see this tool or tools being being used predominantly in the classroom uh or will students be asked to access these tools from home and then in that case uh what concessions may need to be made for students that perhaps don't have access to high-speed internet at home yeah so um for our students that have um possibly had internet at home we we've worked with them for years now our schools have worked with them there's some different programs there's a Cox Connect compete programs um there's hotspots if we needed to um allow student to use we've been able to do that so um we've

051been able to help students with connectivity at home if needed um so that's how we've dealt with it now as far as again it's a website right that that they're accessing so as far as NE a resources their student issued Chromebook at least for our Wonder one grade levels um have been fine so far and there's been no issues with that so but again who knows if something changes but it's all internet based traffic so and it will remain that way yeah thank you very much that's all the questions I have is there anything else from the board thank you both all right so much thank you for having us appreciate it well done all right we're going to move on to uh agenda item 3.02 asba 2025 political agenda Dr McCord thank you Mr

052Thompson governing board members um you have before you uh the 2025 asba political agenda I think this is something that uh that has been submitted and then this is like the final version of where they're at Jill yeah so there was a legislative committee which I actually participated in this time and they took everything that was submitted and we worked through it and the the final document we just went through the changes so the red lettering is is the things that are different from the previous year and then um this is what will be brought to the delegate assembly so if you have thoughts about any items on here that you would like to share with me um um or I'm in January we chose that I would be the delegate um it's the Saturday

053after the law conference I believe that's September 7th but if someone else is interested in doing that I mean I love going I mean I think it's very fun and exciting but if someone else wants a chance to go I'm happy to I think the main purpose for this being here is that we wanted to make sure you guys saw the final version if there were any discussions that you needed to have um before this event happened that we wanted to make sure you guys had your voice yeah is there any discussion between the [Applause] board I think a lot of it um it's just um there was quite a lot of uh different opinions the legislative committee was about maybe 20 people so it was bringing those 20 people together to to um work

054on the document to make sure that it reflected Statewide the views of Schoolboard members and um so if there's something you see and you want to call me and share your thoughts on a particular item I'd be happy to to take that in consideration actually do have a quick question you know as we've gone through this over the years I'm I'm interested to know that like from the asba side and this legislative uh agenda that they have do they ever come back or and and maybe I just haven't seen it but like off this list what have they actually accomplished do we know that um yes they actually do take things off off the list no not not just off the list but I'm I mean so like so here's here's the list of everything

055that you know we're asking for yes here's what we actually got at the end of the day you see what I'm saying yes they um I don't that's a good question that they should probably report on more there's usually a wrap-up session um after the legislature ends and they go through the bills that are passed this um the political agenda allows the um government relations to know our positions as they go into work with legislators on specific legisl so um so for example if the if a legislator brings a bill forward um I I can speak specifically there were a couple of bills about suicide and suicide training and mental health then they look at what we've put here and then they can um kind of gauge whether um we would be as a asba

056organization be supportive of those um and maybe work to to um work with the person who is sponsoring the bill to make changes so that it's more uh manageable at the administrative or District level or School level um well I would be interested in and and maybe you can help um voice this is I would love to see like here's the 2024 legislative agenda that we just completed give me a copy of that and highlight or call out the the things that were accomplished and and what statutes or bills were those attached to so I think I think it would help everybody involved just to say okay okay I understand where this is it might not be written the same or it might not be expressed the same but the idea is the same I

057think that would be interesting to see if well a lot of that is um I don't I don't know if this one is still in here but there is one about uh there's so many uh unfunded mandates to be careful not to to to put more of that on the districts and the schools than are absolutely necessary so for example that that suicide bill that passed it was uh Shan Bowie that got that passed a few years ago and they worked to make it less bsome I mean I think we were already doing the things that got passed in the bill like we were having our Suicide Prevention and training our staff about suicide but for other districts that was a new thing usually the thing is that we're already doing it like Ai and

058other districts are behind us so um then then so I think what they did with that bill was they made it you know instead of having an annual training for every staff member it was like every three years so it didn't become such a administrative B burden just keeping track of who's been trained or what's happened um along the way so that's just one example example but um I will take that um I think that's a good suggestion to know where cuz I think there are things that there are things that stay on these Pages like changing the name of override to something more friendly um like local tax or local funding for schools um that have stayed on here for years but there are definitely ways that asba has been able to have impacts

059and and help make bills better by using the political agenda to to um because you know they're down there they don't have time to call us all and say what do you want so this is kind of their way of knowing what we're behind as an organization and how to implement it but I will take that feedback I just had a couple of questions and I don't know if to direct them to Dr McCord or to Jill um did you say there were only 20 people that are well so there's that's just the legislative committee and I it was a a room full of people it was probably as big as the the conference room in there and so I'm I'm guessing 20 but it might have been more like 25 or 30 the delegate

060assembly um that will be on September 7th it's it's first every every district is encouraged to send a delegate so that if everyone sent a delegate it would be like 225 people I think it's around I don't know 80 to 150 is my guess but it's it's held at the um believe it's the camo back in and in a very large room and it's quite full so there's a lot of people there and there's a mechanism for voting um we now do it on our phones uh but there's a mechanism for voting and also there are uh microphones there so people can you know the the um changes it's mostly the changes that are put forward and then people can vote to accept those changes they can amend those changes um and and there's definitely

061discussion that's why it's kind of interesting to go to see how the discussion goes and then it's voted on and the majority carries so if I'm still confused as to why we're even discussing this tonight to be honest with you because we have political agenda are we not all nonpartisan boards here why are we discussing a political agenda well it's called the political agenda because we're using our consensus to of 20 people no no of the of the whole of all of asba this isn't even finalized until September 7th this is this is a draft okay so let me go back to some you talked about unfunded unfunded mandates this entire list is unfunded mandates the basic needs the basic life needs of children must be met for them to succeed well that okay this

062so are we is this something that we're voting on or we just sending somebody from our district to like approve this well no I'm voting on so this is the core beliefs it's not this isn't a part of the political agenda this is the the first page is the core beliefs of the Arizona School Board Association so it's just just some statements of belief that in order for children to learn we feel like you know their basic life needs need to be met they need to be um you know taken care so where does the district's responsibility start and stop with that that could go on and on this is like has maso's hierarchy of need and and so I'm confused as to why we're talking about this tonight so um so this is the

063core beliefs of asba and it's just saying that as a community we want to support children and there's a family responsibility obviously and if there are circumstances where a family needs supported we're interested in seeing those children supported so they can come to school ready to learn what whatever that might be I mean it might mean that so we're talking about this CU we're members of ASB that be correct members of ASP and I think it's important that you're informed of what is currently this is like the fin fin draft and then I think at the delegate assembly they will approve or maybe they make some changes I don't know there are sometimes some quite interesting and and people can bring forward something new as well if they I think it's the process I mean

064I haven't done it but I think if you want to bring something in addition you have to go around the room with a form and get at least 10 other people to buy into that um but it's it's if you want to come down and see it Ronda it's pretty interesting it's I would say it's democracy and action so um just it just provides an interesting represent represented democracy though EXA I don't think it to me my biggest concern is always that I don't feel like it does a very good job of representing Gilbert it's exactly what I was just going say we have one vote if one person goes down one vot and we've tried before to make comments I know Mr car did and different things and it's a very interesting process if

065you have any concerns with this so this this is hard for me so okay I agree with Miss Wood those my biggest concern I don't think that these core beliefs are probably the majority of what Gilbert Public Schools parents we make up here so to have a organization represent what they would want as a political agenda I don't even like saying the word political because this is a nonpar the whole entire State we run definely nonpartisan because we want good education for every child but I would never write this down as somebody like looking I could barely get through this first page with the asba I just think that I'm not sure why we're talking about it tonight well if you if you want to call me and address any specific concerns I'll definitely well

066nothing's going to change I just don't think this represents I just want to go on record that says I oppose this I don't think it represents the majority of the Gilbert Public Schools voters and what political agenda is this which side of the aisle are we talking about should we bring in the Goldwater Institute and have them do a political agenda and have it presented here I'm just I just don't I don't understand why we're talking about this again I would say that um I strongly believe that we as an organization need to be there advocating for our public schools and our students because it is a it is the legis advocating your own opinion well advocating on a consensus of what we come to after we're going to agree to disagree with this conversation

067okay but again if if anyone wants to call me I'm I'm happy to you can go down and observe as an alternate if you'd want or or if someone wants to no and I appreciate Miss Humphrey's your work on this I just sometimes I think this is just not a place for it to to be within Gilbert public schools and again this is something that we discussed back I think was it January or when they first came out right and so this is you you've asked a couple times why this is brought here to you well I think it's important to see you see where that ended up and so as a board we discussed it to begin with and I think it's important to discuss it again at the end and I think that's

068why that answer your question related to that I I do understand the the the purpose of this of this statement but I also sympathize with uh miss paig and miss wood on the um appropriateness of of of this being discussed at a nonpartisan board meeting and I just want to um always got to for the laugh I find it ironic that number 10 is oppos any legislation that seeks to make Schoolboard elections partisan is included in the political agenda a the political agenda summary um for this number 10 on page it's I guess a different section okay I was I'm sorry section two uh number 10 so that's just ironic to me um but we uh Miss humph very much appreciate your willing to to to speak to any of us here and and uh

069off the Record so thank you it I mean getting the new political agenda ready for the next session is pretty much a year-long process because I think we had to have it in before may I met with the and I I've only been on the legislative committee once but that was in June um and then the legislative then we have the delegate assembly in September the legislative session doesn't start till January so it is it is you know a a process when we have 1,400 board members weighing in on what their thoughts on it on what we should again you use the word political maybe I would I just we're just not supposed to be political well supposed to be nonpartisan well it is definitely nonpartisan I will guarantee that it's not politicals right in

070the name no but I I think there's a member of asba that is part of their organization right and so it does get political yeah I mean any other discussion on this agenda item thank you uh thank you very much we're going to go ahead and uh end our work study we'll adjourn uh and we will move on to our agenda item item number five our brief board business meeting we'll call the meeting to order and ask Miss Wilson to do roll call please Mr Chad Thompson here Miss Lori wood here Miss Sheila ug jetti is not present Miss Jill humph here miss Ronda pige here Mr Thompson you have a quorum thank you very much Miss Wilson uh agenda item six uh is our consent agenda I will ask for a motion to approve

071the consent agenda items as uh represented on this uh on this agenda this evening so moved thank you Miss paig is there a second second thank you Miss humph I'll call for a vote all those in favor of the consent agend of agenda item number six consent agenda items uh please vote uh to approve by saying I I I any opposed thank you and that passes we're going to move on to our action items agenda item number seven uh do I hire a motion for uh agenda item 7.01 superintendent employment agreement for Dr Shane McCord uh I move that we approve the superintendent employment agreement for Dr shame mord for September 1 2024 through December 31st 2027 is that correct June June oh sorry June 1st 2027 Jun 30th June 30th sorry thank you June

07230th 2027 I was trying to remember it off the top of my head my my apologies a lot of dates thank you Miss Hum is there a second a second thank you Miss Wood uh we'll open it up for discussion would anybody like to is there any discussion or would anybody like to comment on this agenda item I'll start out just thank you Dr mcord thank you for coming back oh go um I really appreciate Dr McCord's service I think it's really important to have continuity um and I think that helps us to move forward in the things that we're doing for students and for staff and I think that in the eight years he's already is it eight years now eight years he's already served that we've been able to accomplish a lot and

073I look forward to what we will accomplish with a new strategic plan and going forward in the next few years just add my appreciation for your leadership for the people that you attract and Empower around you the good stuff that we have all the great work that's done and especially for your heart the way that you care about the students the families your staff and teachers here it's evident in all that you do so thank you and I'll just Echo what's already been said thank you very much for your service and I know for me personally uh one of the things that I appreciate the most and am excited about moving forward with you in your current position is um the transparency that uh transparency in a and availability that we receive as board members

074and I know that doesn't just extend to us that extends to everyone uh staff members parents uh anybody in the community um Dr McCord does an excellent job of making himself available to anyone uh that has anything that uh is of concern uh and also of uh noteworthiness so thank you very much all right anything else all right then I'll call for a vote on 7.01 to approve the superintendent employment agreement for Dr Shane McCord uh on the dates that we' have established uh all those in favor say I I I any opposed thank you that passes and Well Done Dr McCord thank you guys thank you very much uh agenda item 7.02 appoint governing board member to represent Gilbert Public Schools as the district delegate to the Arizona school boards Association delegate assembly is

075there a motion well I actually think we've already done this in January okay so we can we can do it though I'll move that I I be the Delegate for okay the delegate assembly thank you Miss humre is there a second I'll second thank you Miss Wood and we'll go ahead and open it up for discussion um I want to thank Miss humph for her service and uh being the leaz on between our district and the asba um but at the invitation of Miss Humphries for somebody else to uh to go and see how this process is done I would like to um I don't know if nominate is the right word but I would like to be uh have the opport Unity to be our school district's uh Delegate for this upcoming meeting on

076September uh September 7th the only thing I don't know is I don't this this won't uh replace Miss Humphries as the uh as the uh leaon the asba liaison for our district it's just for uh this delegate assembly is that correct that is correct yes that would be correct okay so if the invitation is still open I would like to uh to be this uh the Delegate for uh the upcoming delegate assembly that's that's fine I don't think we even have to vote on it we just okay if you want to go do it then please go do it I think it's a very exciting opportunity okay do we I mean made a motion so yeah so I think we should vote so uh would would anybody else like to nominate anyone else okay do

077I need to is this something where we need to you know why don't we do it this way we don't need to do it three times we just need to decide and if I've made a motion for myself because I didn't know there was other interest so I'll just withdraw my motion and you will just be the the delegate and we don't have to vote on it it's just something we can decide among ourselves okay I'm I'm fine with that if that's agreeable to everyone should we vote if that's agreeable I I would vote since it's just an agenda item I would I would just so anybody then I'll make a motion that uh Mr Thompson be the Delegate for the September 7th isba delegate assembly okay and I will second that am I allowed

078to Second myself I will second that uh call for a vote to uh uh nominate uh myself Chad Thompson board member uh as the uh Gilbert Public School uh schools district delegate to the Arizona School boards Association delegate assembly this September uh all those in favor say I I I any opposed all right it passes thank you very much um if if you don't mind I may still be an alternate so I can come and watch all right but thank you see thanks all right that brings us to the end of our board meeting tonight our brief board business meeting uh do I have a motion to adjourn still moved thank you Miss Paige second second thank you miss humph all those in favor say I I I and any opposed and and that's it
