001great thank you everyone for being here we welcome you to our work study and brief board business meeting tonight Tuesday November 14th 2023 we just finished our executive session and we are now here for the work study I've called this meeting to order and we'll go directly to presentation and discussion topics we'll begin with 3.01 Mathematics Curriculum adoption Dr McCord thank you madam president govering board members I will invite up to the square uh uh assistant superintendent Jared Ryan from teaching and learning and he's got a team of people that are coming up that will probably do the talking for is that about right yes sir all right I'll turn it over to you guys Madame President governing board Dr mccort thank you for allowing us to join you this evening um we have some
002exciting information to share with with you including the process up to this point with relation to the math curriculum adoption um this is as we spoke prior incredibly important to the future of Gilbert Public Schools feel like the education of our students and alignment of um core academics and what that looks like kindergarten through 12th grade for our students um we talked earlier today about and we continue to about the why and the why is what I hope you kind of get out of our presentation tonight along with with the facts of what the process is looking like so um this evening uh we have Crystal Udall our um our elementary expert uh next to her Robert bercher our director of um CIA on the elementary side Christa Cox secondary director of CIA and Len
003bomb who is our secondary math expert who's joined us here as a coordinator of that so um they're the ones doing all of the heavy lifting I'm here to support and so I'm going to turn it over them for the uh for the presentation moving forward with relation to where we are currently all right as we met with you before we kind of do we dove into what the whole process was going to look like um so what we've been doing since then is we sent out a call for resources Elementary received 11 resources and we spent 4 days going through with team of teachers to ensure that um resources looked okay aligned to the rigor of the Arizona State Standards um we called teachers out and we had them in grade bands we had
004K2 35 68 um and we we were able to whittle it down to two that we felt like were the best fit um secondary schools got 58 submissions um and so they were able to within 5 days get it down to multiple but they are different with secondary um and I'll let them talk a little more about that but they were able within 5 days to get most of their courses down to two then each of the larger committees that included Community uh community members principles we were able to hear vendor presentations and go through a different round of voting with the rubrics that we provided um in your blue folders and yeah so that's where we've got is tonight we're kind of presenting on what we found out once we got them to two
005uh we're looking forward to recommending um the one that we can move forward with a pilot implementation these were some of the highlights that we um tasked the Committees with looking at the various curriculums with um it was important that it absolutely has to be aligned with the Arizona State Standards we don't have a choice in that matter uh it has to have the rigor and standards of mathematical practice that are set forth in the standards and we do want to make sure that it's comprehensive and great for all of our students including um gifted honors AP uh special educations English language Learners um the whole gamut we want to make sure that this curriculum meets the needs of all of our students we want to make sure that it was comprehensive and that considers
006assessments and it's got to have an effective use of technology and supplemental resources so that it can be good for meet the needs of all of our students all right and I'm going to hand it off to Crystal to go through the process Crystal awesome thank you good evening governing board Dr mcord appreciate you having us here tonight put that a little closer to your yes I can thank you is that better that's better okay all right I just want to give a huge shout out to the committee members they have had many multiple meetings there's it's not easy pulling many people across the district into one place at one time and I am so excited to have worked with 37 in the Elementary section wonderful individuals is my pleasure my um privilege to work
007with him and have this committee work together as I stated they did have met multiple times they have also um reviewed individually as well as group interview uh reviews we have also had some of these members join and be a part of our subcommittee that was that very intensive review that first happened and many of these even though they're may be listed in a particular role many of our teachers you know are parents and they serve a multiple roles so I think consider our community members our teachers District Personnel also so that I feel like we've had many multiple roles represented we also have EV every grade level has been represented instructional coaches have been represented um different schools such as accelerated title one prek was even represented on this um committee as well our
008committee members I know it says in our district strategic operating plan that we want to provide students every opportunity to grow and be successful it's very interesting that that same conversation kept coming up over and over from our subcommittee as well as our larger committee and looking at how do we grow teachers how do we grow students for the life of this adoption and so KN that is our strategic operating plan it wasn't posted anywhere but it's interesting that that conversation did come up and how teachers and parents and community members really wanted to make sure that that was implemented for whatever resource we Ed that that was a focal point um for k6 we did receive a total of 11 submissions sixth grade had an additional three more that they reviewed with 67 and
0098 um it was a very distinct desire that k6 wanted to combine together and look we did review resources that had K5 only and resources that were 68 and above only so no we've had many Myriad of reviews looking at different um lenses of the curriculums that were submitted but it was very important that they wanted to combine and have that coherence together in the past for the last 10 years we've had two curriculums one that supported K5 and a different one that was in sixth grade so that 56 bridge if you will was very hard sixth grade never had access to fifth grade stuff fifth grade never had the access to sixth it was very hard and difficult and so um the two resources that outscored the other submissions came forward as that 4
010k6 that um the submissions that came forward accelerate learning had stem Scopes math which was a k6 product and I ready classrooms by curriculum Associates we reviewed at case six and in a few moments you'll hear about 78 ahead of review as well um from these two resources it was important to see which one would then meet GPS's needs best so we had vendor presentations back in October this rubric that they had in one night in just about an hourish amount of time to review 21 points worth of components that rubric um as you see here curriculum Associates did outscore in each band level overall curriculum Associates scored 19.8 as an average and stem scope scored a for 15.8 average from the vendor presentations that's where they get to show us everything that the bells
011and whistles and those kind of things then we got to step up and individually review in elementary we had several days of review available so teachers and committee members got to choose their date that they came in after school hours to review some came in and stayed multiple hours some came back even a different day and reviewed multiple days so I really want to commend the committee for doing very thorough work and making sure that the review they did was intentionally their deepest desire to make sure that that curriculum was the right fit for the GPS needs um on this slide here we're looking at the rubric was a 60 point review at that the overall average for curriculum Associates for if we combine K2 35 and six it was a 58.1 out of 60
012and for accelerate learning it was a 40 7 point rubric score moving forward so what were these rubrics composed of five different sections the five different sections the section one 2 four and five those sections had all nine points I know section three looks way out there but there was more um to look for and discover and so it was 24 points total for it section one and two looked at alignment to standards learning progressions coherence rigor and math practices that's kind of combining both of those together section three looked at instructional support and usability where we looked at facilitating student learning as well as teacher planning how are both aspects of those handled and so that's that large piece that we really wanted to delve into and look at how can we can grow
013teachers and grow students section four was on the assessment where assessment looks at how do we assess students prior knowledge how many multiple types of assessments are there how do we target standards for those assessments and lastly section five was on resources such as technology supplemental materials some notices that stood out from the committee you see that all five sections curriculum Associates did outscore the other so some of the notices that came forward from that were the personalization of learning for each grade level that it had an ability to for us to use um that would be available in the pilot if we choose to go forward support for families there are over 11 languages for parent letters that can support our family needs also there's a teacher toolbox where all grades so in the
014past we' bought one seat per grade per teacher this would offer one teacher one seat access to all grade levels so meeting many multiple types of needs enriching intervening and those type of components from there I read was the number one scoring leader for our vendor presentations it was also our number one scoring curriculum for the individual review both whole committee we also looked at campus members and community members it was the leader in all five sections in summary I ready had the higher score of the high of the two curriculum resources and based on this data the elementary committee would like to recommend that remove forward with a pilot ey ready of curriculum Associates would it be appropriate to ask questions right now do you think just specific to k6 okay does anybody have
015any questions thank you very much see do you're welcome so I I do have a question I I think it's very interesting that we've landed on this curriculum and I just um interested to know since we did an adoption for Neely traditional and the traditional classroom rooms that ended up with a different book what you saw in this curriculum that makes it better for our typical and collaborative classrooms sure um of the 11 submissions that curriculum was not submitted Again by that uh vendor so it was not possible during this um research time to delve into that one um this one has a an extensive use for intervention in uh in riching personalization for students I feel like it has the components that Lead Teacher growth we have a lot of different teachers and many
016different um Avenues coming in we have Pathways tis teachers need support when sometimes you find they're a little nervous about teaching upper grades this has that support built into it for building the why and learning progressions within it so I feel like this can be a very supportive curriculum for our GPS growing students teachers all right thank you you're welcome other questions go ahead you want me go ahead um thank you for that presentation so just that was one of the questions I had with was about neie we're not changing their math right this does not affect the ne campus and then the one over at Spectrum right Spectrum Canyon Rim and Neely are our three traditional camp or campuses that have traditional options and so no we we signed a contract with them um
017and unfortunately like I said math and focus didn't come forward and bid for this proposal so it wasn't an option okay thanks for that clarification then I had one more question um on the committee is there a reason why there's only one parent that was um on the committee I can see not for lack of trying okay the offer had gone out to suggests um we collected um names from principles and so in offering that to suggestions that they put out they were unable to meet I also want to distinguish so that's only for the elementary we did ask for names from principles and then we also um it was in newsletters and we did put it on our district calendar because we did have to adhere to open meeting laws you know so there
018were avenues for parents to participate during this entire process just one more final piece on that the um Crystal had kind of hit on it but just to put re emphasis uh in the group for elementary and secondary they are listed under the other positions but there were multiple parents and what I would deem community members um in that regard and so there when we realized our community/ parent uh group was maybe not what we wanted it to be um we actually had additional teachers or different roles sign up that weren't necessarily there for the lens of their expertise but because they wanted to kind of be there as a voice as a parent with students currently in our school so I do feel that there was um parent representation uh it just might not
019be under that column up there so several several of us parents that um definitely had our parent hat on while we were discussing okay thank you for that clarification well an we will have the opportunity with whatever it goes forward to have the public review so hopefully we'll have some more input from there too as well yes Mr Thompson yeah I've got a few questions uh first of all thank you for your presentation bring this over here here since I'm talking to you thank you for your presentation um you'd mentioned that previously there was an issue with one curriculum going K through five and then a totally separate curriculum for grade six how does how does this I read um curriculum what does movement look like between grades can can kids that are excelling do
020they have access to higher grade material and kids that are are struggling do they have access to lower grade material let me stop stop there for that one all right yes you are correct teachers and students have access to above and below material so teachers can intervene with on grade level below enriching if it we need the accelerated uh gifted kind of lens pieces there's an Adaptive piece to the personalization learning that goes in at grade level and adapts Accord according to how the students is working through the program and then um it's taken three times a year and then will continue to adapt to that student specific needs and skill gaps within those Concepts okay thank you um my next question is in regards to students that are struggling um we have and correct
021me if I'm wrong but we've got uh there's there's different tiers tier one tier two tier three does this curriculum include tier 2 and tier 3 material or is that are those is that is that material that is that we have to get in addition to this this is absolutely a comprehensive curriculum so it will have supplemental materials and based on our committee we were intentional in selecting both resource and self-contained teachers so we did have them um and they're going to be critical to the pilot implementation as well um so we can get feedback and Ensure it works for all of our students and teachers okay thank you and then my last area is is really it's more of an area of concern um and I I talked about this a little bit when
022we were talking about the the program going into our traditional uh uh canvases um and but this is the first time in looking at a curriculum that I saw this specific wording um and the wording that I saw on the website in it was either in the about us I think it was in the About Us section of of curriculum Associates website they one of their I guess one of their core focuses is equity of outcome and I know that You' be hard pressed to find a curriculum nowadays that doesn't incorporate social emotional learning and equity and diversity and things like that but this was the first time I ever saw this term in a curriculum or or in a company that's providing math curriculum Equity of outcome and my my concern is that if
023this if if this curriculum is if one of its goals is equity of outcome the only way to do that is to lower the bar for everyone because we know just naturally there are kids that Excel and there are kids that fall behind and so how can we and this isn't a criticism of you guys or the committee or anything um how can how can we as a district in implementing this if this is one of the the goals of curriculum Associates how can we make sure that we are still providing opportunities for kids to Excel and not be held back because of the goal of equity of outcome um yeah what are what are we doing to ensure as we implement this to make sure that that that our students that are going to
024be able to move at a quicker Pace if they want to so when I hear Equity of outcome what strikes me with that and it's all the lens right would mean highest level of academic success possible for every student it doesn't mean equal doesn't mean the same equity in that sense to me would mean I'm a self-contained student I'm a resource student or I'm A Gifted or honors or accelerated student or I'm a traditional 50 percentile right through the through the middle we're all getting everything we need for us to be the to reach the highest level of success for us right I think what we've experienced with various curriculum adoptions over the years is that it doesn't do that and that there are groups that aren't looked after whether it's your accelerated group sorry
025just do more or whether it's your group that's struggling with um needs of academic interventions and teachers aren't given the supports to be able to support the students that that are need that have that need right so when I read that Equity of outcome that's that's what I'm thinking right I'm thinking the things that we're talking about in terms of the variety and range of students we have to ensure that each of them all of us are different Learners right some of us gifted some accelerated some Advance some struggle with math maybe right so I think that what we've been striving to do is identify something that ensures every student regardless of need walks into a room supported by a teacher who feels confident and supported with materials that are aligned to State Standards to
026ensure we can push every student to be their maximum we all agree with the exact thing that you're saying that every student deserves to be um our last um thought is ever to hold anybody back to ensure everybody has has the same results okay if that's the question or con no that was a fantastic explanation of your understanding of that and I appreciate that my last question is in regards to section five I believe you said it was section five had to do with technology I'm just surprised that didn't score higher with everything today being so technologically advanced what was missing from this section that gave it that didn't prevented it from being a nine probably because they only sorry forgot to move the microphone nothing out there is perfect but everything can become what
027GPS needs are and so there's a difference in score some of that score may have gone to the other so a person may have felt like maybe stem Scopes had more of a component on that technology piece so if it's not a 100% vote but a very large percentage of our committee members felt like that was um sub substantial for the need also reviewing a curriculum in an hour or two or three or if they came back in maybe four or five and I'm going to tell you some stayed about that long to look teachers take a year to learn that whole piece and ins and outs and whatnot so every teacher is about to experience that change and that learning aptitude so a review in very short few hours is not 100% And so
028I feel just more time on task and being able to you know hear more about being trained on it would be able to allow a lot of those committee members who are in the education field to feel secure at that probably a 9po average okay they'll discover more layers yeah and then I did think of one more question one of the com complaints that I've heard from parents and most of it's come from unless I'm mistaken from um Common Core is that a lot of parents don't know how to help their kids because their kids will go to school to learn math and they'll come home and they'll say well that's not how my teacher taught me how to do it and the parents are just lost because they're like well I can't even help
029my kid figure out how to do his homework his or her homework because I don't know how the teacher is teaching it and it's different from How I Learned it how does this curriculum I'll say how does this curriculum score on in that regard in being something that parents can get involved with if they want to at home in helping their kids and helping their kids with their homework and things like that that's definitely something that I think it comes out during the pilot session right is hey we've got we're trying it out for 60 days or whatnot and hey a lot of times it'll come to light during that period um it doesn't necessarily disqualify us from moving forward with this it just knows we just means we have to build things in the
030background to make it accessible for our students um but yeah I totally get it and please know that I'm an educator and during Co and stuff my kids told me I was doing math wrong as well so I was like I've taught the same unit like um stay in your lane kid and he's still your children yes my own personal children they they said I was wrong so I get that CHR Chris actually had a great conversation related to this today if you want to share kind of your thoughts so we um and I that that was later on cuz this is something that um again those of us that have children especially um currently have gone through that and have experienced that and our parents want to be involved and they want to be
031able to help their students and um there's several things um before I move forward um as far as the communication of the curriculum when Crystal shared that there was how many languages 11 languages like that in itself like our demographic is changing and um that's more than I've ever seen with a curriculum as far as what they provide and when you look at section um not just section five but section five when it talks about the resources that are available for supplemental and the technology aspect that's where we're going to be able to connect to our parents and that is something that as a part of our implementation goes with our teachers that is a part of the training and shift that we know needs to happen with or without this um we're constantly needing
032to stay on top of ways of staying connected with our parents and making sure that they also know how at the end of the day to sit home with their child and help them to go through that and so um I think it's important to just put emphasis on that part and so um communication the resources and then with our um students right now we know that our parents have to be an instrumental part of that and so um starting from the beginning of like opening up more of that communication to and from um and having um everybody that is involved in that implementation know that that's part of the lens and so we have to make sure that um we are kind of thinking through that that lens our current students um they will
033tell us uh I I was very vulnerable today in a meeting and shared uh my son was in the cohort that Skips a year of math in fourth grade while Co was hitting and so to skip a year of math and then to be online and then to be literally was in fourth grade and I caught myself same I mean most of us at this table probably have a similar story um where I got a little competitive and was like I'm going to figure this out before you and he's a fourth grader um and we have to kind of figure out how to bridge that and so common core or not any new curriculum that you put into place with academic standards there's going to have to be conversations surrounding that but I I will
034say in the whole committee um and in the work groups there were times where this exact conversation got talked about um and so I think our teachers are realizing that they are as effective in the classroom with the support of the families and that we have to press pause like everyone is going 100 miles an hour and doing the best that they can but if we step back and press pause and evaluate what we can do to include our parents and help them better understand um and I do feel like when uh some of these presentations were happening again I'm going to put emphasis on the resources that it it allows for that it's more interactive in allowing the parents to be a part of that um I don't know if you wanted to add
035to that um hope I appreciate that and I um as I was going to the website I was reading some of the blog posts that that they that they highlight and there were um it looked like there were some experiences that other community other school districts that have implemented this have shared in regard to giving teachers ideas on how to communicate these things with parents so I thought I thought that was good Mr berer is actually oh oh I just wanted to say too that we've already been on the phone with some neighboring districts that have adopted this and gotten their like hey what we're what should we know about you know what do you wish we were just on a telephone call um actually yesterday with a district that's in their first year of
036implementation and we're like What did you wish you knew you know this time last year so that we can try to get ahead of their mistake sort of thing thank you very much that's all the questions I have go ahead Mr Jetty I I have a question about the fact that I know people on the committee probably only spent four or five hours because of the limitations of time but I know that you Crystal and probably to Robert and everybody else spent a lot more time looking at it and having been involved in curriculum adoptions I'm going to ask you are you excited about it I have been excited for this for the last seven years I have waited for this day to come but are you excited about this this I am very excited
037about this as um back in the operating strategic operating plan we want to provide student every opportunity to grow and I'm going to add and teachers not just to grow but be successful and we feel like this can help our k6 teachers it can help our k6 students everyone in every facet so EV every layer our students who are high achieving our students who are struggling our students who are accelerating we feel like this can absolutely help and support them individually as a classroom and as growing committee me community members and when the professionals are excited about it that that goes to the kids kids and everybody everybody wins absolutely I'm excited to make sure that teachers stay excited about this m Pig I just I would like to piggyback on that because it was
038we had a meeting this morning about the implementation and I I'm not sure if we'll go into that um too in depth tonight but uh it involves a lot of different stakeholders that are going to um do a lot of work over the next few years and um Miss bomb has joined our team and we she's been in the classroom a very long time and I uh we've been very excited but today was a day that I feel like collectively in this room I don't know that I've ever seen that much excitement surrounding an adoption let alone any work that I've done and um the final committee um we were at Community Ed where the room was packed full of Educators and usually in a process like this you're not going to make everybody happy
039in my experience I don't know that I've done one thing that has made 100% of the people happy and that final meeting I I have to admit genuinely there was not one person that was not like smiling from ear to ear full support and all of the questions that they had they skipped past this stuff they were like wanting to know how quick can we do this can we start now let's talk about all the stuff that we're like we're going to get there slow down and we now have teachers we can only um support piloting in so many schools and so many classrooms and we have teachers every day we're receiving emails where they are begging like everyone wants to Pilot so the hardest part we have right now is containing that excitement um
040and I'm sorry to like add that but it is when you ask that question that's not often something we get to discuss and talk about but genuinely I feel like it's extremely contagious right now so we have really good momentum going with that well that's a good problem to have absolutely Mrs Pig I just wanted to Circle back with Mr Thompson's comments because that is one of the concerns that I've heard from my friends and in my little Community is the the homework so how much homework is when with this amou adoption do you guys have can you answer that is it a heavy load of homework a light load of homework just wondering it's a quality load of it's a quality load yes we are into quality mathematics yes okay um I lean in
041for just a moment and kind of answer a little bit there are Family Resources there's a family site that's available 24/7 for parents to um access interactive tools games Family Resources the family center also provides um student materials navigation of how to help students progress and um achieve there's a communication tool with for teachers to have I let's say parent friendly language on it so that communication report can have parent friendly language on where students are at and where they're growing so there are tools within these many languages to help parents both online and in hand with the family letters and activities and online resources so I hope that may help in this in this curriculum there's not a prescribed amount of homework you know it's all going to be what the the students need
042will dictate how much practice you know they need going home thank you I just had kids that went to Neely so I knew exactly what they were coming home with every single night and what was expected so anyway but thanks for trying you know answering that question L I did have a couple more um I just wondered about what kind of materials is it a consumable book that they'll be working with hard cover digital materials what kind of materials are we talking about thank you good question um the teachers meant get their manuals of course students every grade level it's a consumable um also teach students will have access to online components as well so all those components all together so the inhan and as well as online for k6 there's also manipulatives so that
043is exciting to make sure that they were putting hands we did that last year and now we're looking at doing that again to put consumables in I'm sorry manipulatives into the hands of the students to work with mathematical understanding okay that's great cuz I my other question was are there various approaches I I don't think of students as gifted or special needs I think of students as learning differently and are there different approaches to address the different learning needs of students yes there's multiple models and instructional strategies that will help develop the standards for proficiency for the students okay great and then lastly what is it about this curriculum that you feel you've been waiting seven years so what is it that this curriculum does that we didn't have in the previous one oh my
044goodness how long do we have this this curriculum offers multiple facets for teachers to learn the wise and how's and learning progressions those were not layered in our previous curriculums that came out 10 10 years ago it was 2012 when we adopted so that being said there's been more learned so we have that in a compact Place rather than riding from behind the scenes and working on curriculum apps and documents that are supportive to material it's inclusive okay and that's exciting to have all right thank you did you want to add something no okay um two questions for me then as we finish up thank you everyone for the discussion really appreciate it just how do you feel like this Elementary curriculum addresses Basics and ability to I don't know that has to be memorization
045and factual but do you feel like I feel like math is foundational in elementary especially how do you see this curriculum helping our students gain those really foundational principles as I was stating the curriculum that we had adopted 12 years ago there's some components and pieces that we have learned more and we've made District materials to help support that instructional strategies models fact fluency understanding how do we support those strategies for growing fact fluency those pieces are embedded in this program and it's no longer here's one more thing here's one more thing which as you grow you hope to gain more knowledge so as we grow in the next years of this adoption of course the district documents will always support but it's fantastic having something that's very inclusive that builds those foundational skills and
046concepts for students that are those layers K1 to you got to have those in place because third grade brings in so many more components and adds to that that those pieces need to be in place and so we definitely want to make sure those foundational skills are strong and we feel like this curriculum very much supports that belief that's great and then my final question and you might get to this and you've kind of covered it is it looks like and I really appreciate you including the rubrics here and here just to give us an idea of what the specifics were but um it looks like both both curriculums score pretty closely so one is a little bit ahead so do you feel like as a committee the whole committee was comfortable and confident in
047recommending one one curriculum at the end of the day or is there is everyone some people hanging back and holding back when we went to the whole committee it was unanimous we didn't have to ask for anything like they was automatically it would if you were in the room it was cut and dry there was a favorite okay okay great that's wonderful wonderful if if there's not any further questions we can ask further at the end cuz I know we'll Circle back on this so great if we can keep going then did you have anything Dr okay super well it is helpful to be able to ask those questions I know thank you so much really appreciate that yeah we really appreciate that so now we're we're on to the 712 adoption committee update is
048that where we're at yes okay thank you good evening governing board members and Dr McCord it's my pleasure to up update you on the secondary portion of the adoption committee um and the results that are being recommended by the committee um I am going to go a little bit faster for for the seventh grade and eth grade I think that Crystal has done a great job of setting the the foundation of what what we did and what it entailed and so what you're going to see is a lot of the same information but based on our seventh grade and 8ighth grade committee members so our secondary adoption committee as a whole consist of 46 members um also made up of District Personnel administrators instructional coaches teachers and community members we also had many teachers or
049administrators that were also parents and with students in our school system so serving several roles um huge shout out again to them as Crystal did they they gave up a lot of time um and had a lot of extras that they needed to do to be a part of this committee but their dedication and determination to find what is best for GPS in moving mathematics forwards was out of this world I don't have a better way to explain it it was very exciting to see for our grade seven and grade eight there were 12 submissions that were reviewed um they met for 4 days as a subgroup as a workg group to review all 12 and on those workg group review results three Re resources came forward that met the criteria of the rubric and
050from those three they were able to narrow it down to the two resource that's that outscored the others and those two resources um were granted vendor presentations and a second review the finalists that came forward from our grade seven and grade eight were the curriculum Associates I ready and the middle school math solution by Carnegie Learning okay those are also the same resources that most closely align to our ma math vision and the operating we had our vendor presentations toward the end of October and out of a 21o rubric our Carnegie Learning average vendor presentation score was an 18.8 the curriculum Associates vendor presentation average was a 19.9 following the vendor presentation we also did a second review with the rubric of the adoption committee that you have and the results of that showed that
051Carnegie Learning did not score as well as curriculum Associates in both seventh grade and 8th grade so the vendor presentations um and the committee rubrics um indicated that curriculum Associates was outscoring Carnegie Learning I have a similar um information slide on the five areas and Crystal's already gone through what those five areas of the rubric were um I will say that these were a little bit closer in many of the categories which is a testament to both of those resources being quality um however we did sit and and had a conversation and not just s and eight but six seven and8 which I think that was important um and by the time we had open dialogue about both of thee um vendors and both of the resources the committee's recommendation overwhelmingly was I ready by
052curriculum Associates uh just on this section to the curriculum Associates score just a little bit lower than Carnegie Learning what was some of the things there that and how are you going to maybe address that um so the section two was the alignment to rigor and standards for mathematical practices So within the the review time there were more teachers who didn't find as much of the math practice standards that were actually listed within it however those differences out of nine points um statistically is is pretty small um and it and we also had conversations with this being K8 and so our I mean we they didn't have to choose this um but as a whole they felt that this was the better of the two resources okay all right thank you I just had a
053maybe a comment go ahead no let's do that since we're I'm assuming that since we're using the same curriculum it's just following through to the junior high that that's probably a smoother transition for our kiddos right absolutely that's definitely the hope and I know we've got sixth graders in our elementary school that are doing seventh and eighth grade math so we think that that really limits the number number of transitions through our program yeah we don't use the word hope anymore we expect yes excellent any other any other questions on this seventh and eth grade well at this time go ahead Mr Thompson oh go ahead and then I'll let Miss okay thanks so this I'm just a very curious person and this has been killing me ever since I saw this present who who
054who made this presentation who created this presentation what it's gr okay why why and again this is going to be silly why was why was curriculum Associates color blue in K through six but then switched for seven and eight because we had two different people working on the two different sets and I did notice that and should have changed it at the last moment I don't think he anything need to be changed I just I was curious and I me if I didn't ask between Elementary and secondary you would be pleased to know like at one point every bar graph on this whole presentation were all different colors so we were excited to at least make them all Gilbert colors Chad if I were your teacher I'd congratulate you for being so attentive absolutely Miss
055sunre did you add something um I just wanted to know with the junior high curriculum again what are the materials and the approaches for junior high it is it is um consecutive through the K8 and so the resources that they would have in fifth grade and sixth grade will continue into seventh grade and e8th grade so that continuity and that comfort for kids is going to be a lot smoother versus changing so again we'll have the consumable textbook and the digital and the digital absolutely um resources and I just because it was a point that got brought up and it's something I'm feel like we could hit on throughout and it's important is when you talk about our parents Mr berer referenced how it used to be split into even more bands and um honestly
056I wasn't sure that a K8 recommendation that it would go that way cuz we were trusting a lot of experts in the room um but when we talk about our parents they would then get that same experience as well K8 which has not happened we've been trying to ask people in the history of Gilbert when has that happened and we are going back 30 40 years where we have not seen seen and so I want to say never but I can't go back quite that far great anything further no okay thank you we'll move on then to the next part the algebra 1 geometry and Algebra 2 absolutely so there were three separate teams reviewing Algebra 1 geometry and Algebra 2 and over those four days they reviewed 12 submissions um I will tell you
057that curriculum Associates already did not continue into the high schools so that was not a a possibility for continuing um there were actually three resources that came forward that met the criteria of the uh rubric and those three did outscore all of the others um so those three at this level were granted vendor presentations and a second review the three resources that came forward were envisions by SAS math Nation by accelerate learning and into a by hooton Mifflin and hardcour we once again use the same rubric at all levels for the vendor presentations and the average vendor presentation scores are indicated on this slide where Savas was a 19.5 accelerate learning was an 18.8 and hooton Mifflin hardcourt was a 19.8 and that is out of a 21 point total so we had two very
058close scores following the vendor presentation ations the group sat again together and with a new lens completed the adoption committee rubric and from the three vendors and the three areas of Algebra 1 geometry and Algebra 2 what you can see that's indicated here is that the hooton Mifflin hardcourt far outscored in the second review with the rubric um their lowest score was a 53.8 their highest was a 50 7.8 and the other two vendors did not even reach the level of 50 and this is out of a 60 point scale so you were willing to go to different vendors maybe between algebra geometry and Algebra 2 if you needed to the direction that we were taking was what what is the best resource out there for all of our students okay the rubric is the
059same and so it had the five same sections um for our breakdown and again some of these areas are closer for between two vendors than others but after the vendor presentations and after the second review um our committee came together and it was unanimous that their recommendation for Algebra 1 geometry and Algebra 2 was into AA by hooton Mifflin and hardcourt and you've said that correctly every time with that I think that's you get a star okay I'll take a star are there any questions about this specifically board members what what was it about this vendor that was made it so topnotch in comparison to the other two all three resources that were presented had positives and negatives um and this one was had more positives and was more consistent with the positives than the
060other two vendors I will say that the teachers reviewing and the administrators who joined them in reviewing um felt that this resource best served our entire student population it wasn't about any subset of population it served all of our population okay all right thank you I want to add briefly also um 2005 is my first was my first principal stint in Gilbert and since 2005 and Len and I have done a lot of this um traveling together and and leading together um from a campus uh level and this is the first time that across our district unanimously all campuses selected one vendor um and that's that's important it's really important for us moving forward it's important for us from not only a training perspective and a support perspective but analyzing student data perspective student growth
061um trying to find spots that we can strengthen it's been a challenge over the course of time when you have two or three different resources being used across five or six different campuses depending on the era we were in and so this was particularly exciting for me and as I communicated with Len and she would report out what the discussions were This was um this is kind of monumental for us to get to this point in time and so I'm excited I thank her for her leadership and um the committee work for getting to the point that this is going to really enable us to drive forward both in an instructional side as well as in a data driven side um to really inform us on our decision- making moving forward so I just wanted
062to add that this is critical and this is exciting for us yes M Pig please thank you for that I absolutely believe in uniformity across our schools because if we have one student that transfers from one school to another they need to be able to go in there and have the same type of curriculum so I'm really really excited because I've been in this district for a long time and I know hasn't always been uniform so I'm really excited thank you for explaining all anything further before we go oh go ahead Mr chapson we've had our it's been I think 10 years since we've changed math curriculums right which I'm told is the on the long side um but we don't want to be in the habit of updating and changing curriculums every couple few
063years just for the sake of of doing so in your opinion is the I ready and the hmh um curricula are are these are these curricula that could if if they needed to take care of our needs for 10 plus years yes and and this is on video we're recording this so yes and that was that's that was a consideration of where are we now and where do we want to go and will this take us through that Journey so that was considered and it was a conversation we also had conversations connecting the two so will our eighth graders feed into our Algebra 1 and will that transition be smoother than it possibly has been in the past and so it was all positive thank you is that good okay let's move on then let's
064go to the upper level high school course this is when it gets fun so of the many many people that were involved in the adoption committee many of them were tasked with finding resources for our upper level math classes so starting with college algebra and pre-calculus um they reviewed for college algebra three submissions and their selection which you are looking at here which is from Sage their average rubric score was a 93 out of a 108 um and for pre-calculus um they reviewed eight submissions so that was nice and Sage's pre-calculus with limits a graphing approach average score was a 96.5 out of the 108 so these were the highest scoring um resources and the committee was did not feel they needed to see to go forward that they just wanted these okay if we
065continue we have our calculus 3 and differential equations um our calculus 3 had two submissions to review and their submission was scored an average score of 100 out of the 108 and for differential equations there was only one submission but these two courses are semester courses and so having the same vendor was a positive to our committee and their average score on the rubric was a 99 out of 108 so it there was no question in their mind that these two would go forward and and be requested sorry each of these are only a semester calculus 3 and differential equations is then the second half yes okay it's tough year yeah I was like whoa especially in high school district the last two are our AP Calculus and AP Statistics courses our AP Statistics team
066reviewed six submissions and the average score out of 108 for their selection which is the practice of Statistics was a 95 and our AP Calculus team which was reviewing for not only AP Calculus AB but also BC so two different levels they reviewed six submissions and their average score out of 108 was a 103 I will say that the calculus submissions um they did not get it to this Choice initially they had two finalists and so we did have vend presentations as we did with the other levels followed by a second review and this resource outscored the other um finalist I'll call it um in both categories of the vendor presentation and the second review so this was their final selection do we want to have any questions yeah that's say Doone have any question
067any questions about those upper level high school mths smart well I reviewed the differential equation good I was going to say if parents can't help their Elementary children with math it just prepares them for high school this is where you know your kids are smarter than you are because they are doing things that you didn't learn in school sorry for that truth but it's true so let's continue then thank you um so we were very pleased uh the fact that we were coming forward with two vendors which for uh vast majority of our students that's kindergarten through possibly junior year of high school they would be seeing two vendors um we really tried to be supportive um along the way that whatever comes forward even though we knew it maybe would not be realistic from
068our lens we would love it to be one vendor everywhere uh but with how different the different levels of math become I honestly a bunch of us were anticipating several and so the fact that this truly is what uh the committee led to um by following like our Junior High seventh and eighth grade team were not in the same room as our k6 so it's not like they were um led to believe um for any other reason then following the rubric and what they felt was going to be best for our students so with those um recommendations uh we just want to reiterate what our next steps would be can I can I ask a question before you yes of course um the AP are you limited by the AP board or whatever it is
069as to which vendors you can use College Board does give a list of recommendations that it has to fall within but it is uh pretty comprehensive and we are in compliance with college board so with our next steps um we will Robert and I are going to discuss a little bit about what we have set up for the public review that's a 60-day public review that will run from January through March in that same time frame the pilot implementation will be taking place as well so in just a moment I'll give some more details on that um both both of those pieces are pending board approval so um these ladies have done a lot of work to set up tentative uh schedules and timelines um and they are ready ready to go first thing in
070the morning um with the next step the committee will review the pilot data so we will come back and um there is there are Chromebooks set up at the um at the for the pilot and for the public review that we're constantly collecting data so for the public review they will um they can look through the manipulatives they can look through the um consumables they can click around online and then they fill out their own rubric so to speak and we will collect that data and bring it back to the board anyone can show up to the public review that can be students Community families um and again we'll go into that in just a moment and then with the pilot um we are collecting D data there as well and at that lens it
071is from the teachers on the usability of everything that they just um trained on um we also survey our students every so often um to collect student feedback it's always my favorite to look through they always have some interesting comments that you will all get when we put that together um and then the third group that we are um going to be surveying is the actual parents of the students that are sitting in the pilot classrooms um there will be a couple of surveys that are sent out um all of those parents will be made aware that their class is going to be um going through the pilot uh so that they're aware they'll receive all of the materials as if it were truly the beginning of a new um curriculum all of that data
072will go back and be compiled and disaggregated um and our hope is that in uh between April and May that we can come back to all of you with the data from the two things that I just discussed and present that for a final approval um and then you see that the next step after that would be teacher training we put to be determined uh only for the reason that our historical approach has been to do like a training in June um a little bit of training in the beginning of the year and then support is going and we have taken the approach to completely um re-evaluate the way that we have done uh curriculum um implementation training and try to learn from what we've done and do it better and so um there are
073teams that are going out to other school districts to see how this has been done um we've worked with uh vendors that um specialize in implementing curriculum to get some expertise and right now that training schedule is literally going to spand over um a good solid year but it's a two-year plan of implementation training so we want to meet all of our teachers where they're at um Mr Ryan did a nice job of already starting I mentioned a meeting earlier today um where we are trying to set up that not trying we are setting up the training to meet the needs of um all of our incoming teachers so if they're pathway teachers if they're teacher in residents if they're a student teacher if they're in their first three years years of teaching veteran teachers
074they need just as much love and support and training as well um so we want to make sure that we're thinking through that lens now and not going into it that all of our teachers can get a oneandone type training and move on from there so um we've really set the tone that it's kind of an all hands- on deck and that everybody is equally responsible for training depending on our level of expertise and um role and responsibility so that is the next steps that we plan to tackle all right for elementary we tried to be strategic geographically with regional sites that the curriculum will be on display um for parents to go and give their feedback again this is in the form of a survey on a Chromebook that will be up so we
075have selected Ashlin Ranch um Augusta Greenfield and paa Del re again we tried to get one in Mesa one on East West um and one towards the South uh it's really important too to note that we're strategic and there will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays somebody will be here from 700 am. to 6:30 p.m. um at the district office because we do have to be cognizant of parents on work schedules um so we'll be open a little later and they can come a little earlier should they want to come review the curriculum as well and similarly uh we had the same strategic approach thank you uh same approach for secondary and you can uh see within the presentation uh we felt the district office was neutral to have the full K12 everything in one spot
076uh yeah the front office is going to be packed for a while and then um Highland Jor High South Valley Junior High and then Highland High and Campo High tried to spread those out as best as possible as well will the um all of the secondary materials be available at the junior highs and the high schools or just Junior highs have Junior High curriculum and high schools have high school curriculum cor depending on the level so Elementary it will be elementary junior high will have Junior High cuz it's different vendors and then at the high school it will be the algebra geometry Algebra 2 and then the higher level okay all right thank you oh I'm Sor will there be at each of these locations will there be opportunities for folks to see um or
077interact with the online or the the the digital/electronic aspects of these and even the the what do you call them the the manipula yeah yes to all of that and there is a QR code and something that we're going to all so um try to um now you said the word and now you're making me say it and I don't use that word a lot thanks a lot Jared um we similar to what we did with our previous um adoptions there's a spot on the website that goes active and live once we have approval that will give all of this um pilot and public review information and the QR code is there as well so even if a parent was sitting at home and wanted to at least see the online stuff we figure that's
078better than there are some families that just don't have it within their schedule to make make it here so all right so we do have um a little bit on the pilot uh that I wanted to add from what I was just sharing the pilot implementation uh we're very pleased to share that it will be at all of our schools so 25 Elementary campuses seven Junior highs and seven high school campuses will be piloting uh I think it's important to um go back to something Miss bomb said earlier in this presentation within those classrooms on each of these campuses we have spread out where those Pilots will be so on grade level in our special education classrooms in our advanced placement classrooms in our e classrooms uh co- talk classrooms You Name It Whatever the
079different type of learning environments are that we offer there will be a pilot taking place within those and we are very strategic to do that um and again uh some campuses that we asked to do a couple of those areas then we're asking if they could do all um so we're having more of a problem of having to tell people not quite yet um we're not having a problem with finding where to Pilot so that's representative in the fact that all of our campuses will have something going on the proposed training there will be a training in November and December for the pilot so these teachers do need to go through training to know how to use that we will pull those teachers they will be provided a substitute teacher um in order to engage
080in that training fully and not feel like it has to come before after their contract uh that support will be ongoing again that is part of what I shared Mr Ryan already um started today we have ongoing meetings uh a huge group of us that um instructional Specialists coaches coordinators that will be out in the field supporting all of these teachers um so that we can get into all of the classrooms to make sure that they feel supported during the pilot and then I did discuss a little bit about the feedback um from our families and um students and parents and then we just across the board are really going to be pushing the um public review you so we would just love um any ideas if you get feedback on um ways that we
081can promote that um we are open to any suggestions we want to get as much feedback from our community as possible with that I just had a quick question question so did I catch that right that not every single math class will have this going in there's only going to be a select couple of maass at the elementary level we're looking at two or three teachers per campus yeah and please note that it's not at Neely I just wanted to make that distinction if you were like there's 25 there they just got a new one oh is there a reason why we're not piloting with everybody we're we're somewhat limited um and the number of seats that the company will allow us to offer oh okay thank you yeah usually um I mean there's one
082vendor that um in their contract during a pilot will only offer up to 10% of the population so there's criteria we're stuck held too yeah so then I guess the next year then everybody will be in there per the contract right corre okay thank you are there any further questions well I I have to say I I'm a little surprised that we didn't come out with like one K12 but I think that um looking at the different options I think this is a really good opportunity for our students and I know parents get frustrated that math is taught differently than they learned but part of that is to make it more understandable for students because if most of us some of us didn't enjoy math or didn't understand it we need to find new and
083different ways of teaching it to make it more accessible to all of our students and help them to understand it in a better way so I'm really excited um it's been a long time since we had a math adoption but uh I appreciate all the hard work that you've done anything further no I just want to thank this group um I know the time and effort that you put into this and I know how excited you are about moving this forward this is someone who's been here for a long time I know that this is needed and so thank you guys so much for the effort you're put into it appreciate it thank you very much we appreciate the presentation and all that you've done yep yeah if you're next okay yep great so that
084was 3.02 oh no that was 3.01 Mathematics Curriculum adoption now we're to 3.02 2024 25 course description books for high schools and Junior highs thank you madam president now to continue the teaching and learning show uh we have uh our director of curriculum instruction assessment Miss Christa Cox uh and to talk about the course description book the other fun part of her job thank you good evening Madame President members of the board and Dr McCord the course description book uh is a huge undertaking and um I'm just going to share a little bit about what that process looks like really just focus on the summary of the changes and proposals that we're making and then open it up for any question and comment for you so um each year uh there is a committee that
085is made up of our registration APS um coordinators uh from all of the different content areas um we have different directors in the room cabinet members uh principles and we go through our course description book uh offerings we make sure that they're relevant up toate um if there's revisions that need to be made uh there's a form that's sent out to the campuses and they get a couple of month window to make any type of request proposal if they want to add a new course if they feel there needs to be so it's teacher driven in the beginning all of those requests do come to the committee the committee then reviews those uh to make sure they're in alignment with our strategic operating plan our district vision and then more importantly that they are attached
086to the academic standards or the um if they are in support of a program that they align with what that program is so for example we want our AP classes to be the description that comes from college board we don't want to create that to be what we think it should be because we're teaching that curriculum same thing with our dual enrollment offerings our CTE offerings they should be aligned to whatever that program standards are so we go through that and um part of the process too is if one campus is making a request that has to go through the different department chairs that the different campuses so if a science teacher wanted to make a proposal for a different science class the different department chairs have gotten to see that before it's even come
087to the committee review to make sure that that uh we are making these changes in decisions on behalf of all of Gilbert public schools and not just a specific campus um at that point we go through and we audit all of that and based on what the committee has approved and would like to bring forward that's what you will see this evening uh I'm going to start on high school um and then do junior high separately so you'll notice that this evening there is one book for high school um I will be honest that Gilbert Classical Academy has historically had their own book when GCA started our school district did not have as many um programs and different uh programs within different schools so for example um we have now started an IB School at
088Gilbert High and so rather than get in the habit of creating different books for the different schools um we felt that it would be justified to just keep it as one comprehensive book so that our students and our families know what all of Gilbert Public Schools offers and when we did an audit of gca's book there were three pages that were separate everything else within their book was already in existence in our book so it kind of was very redundant um they will still have their own School handbook that helps their uh Community just hone in on what they offer um but for the sake of publishing a course description book we really want to have a comprehensive book that is there for our entire community so within the high school book um the first
08915 or so Pages um are meant to provide information to our families on selecting and um choosing the best classes for their future and within that we've done a lot of work to make sure that those SE that beginning section is very intentional um and supporting our counselors and having those conversations and our parents and family so over the years uh sometimes it can there can be a lot of information in there and it gets a little bit disorganized in my opin opinion and so each year we evaluate that information to make sure it's concise and that we're not sending any mixed messages to our families and that it truly does provide them the information um there are sections within the beginning of the book uh that really highlight some of the great things that
090our students can have access to that we don't um we've gotten a lot of feedback from our parents and families over the year oh if I would have known that earlier in their career and so we've tried to really listen to our families and make the beginning of the book not just for parents but through the lens of what is going to best guide our students um help parents make those decisions with their students and um allow our counselors to have those conversations so um in the beginning of the book you will notice that there's just been made revisions um to add in for example summer school information instead of having a separate addendum or book there we just wanted to get the information right into our main book because we get a lot of
091questions about summer school and it was feedback from parents that said man I wish I would have seen that in the regular book um a few years ago Gilbert Public Schools was approved to um uh with the Arizona Department of Education for the proficiency seals that they can have added as a diploma seal um a lot of our families didn't know that those were things so we put those in the front of the book so that's a lot of the information that you'll find there our graduation requirements uh and recommended Pathways in the back of the book you will find that there are some appendix pieces that support our campus um or our District's different programs so there is um a section in there for uh our online learning there is a section in there
092for um IB there's a section in there for Canyon Valley for GCA and so for all of those additional opportunities that our District offers we want to make sure that all of our families have access to that um outside of the beginning in the back of the book obviously the book the whole purpose of it is to provide our course offerings and so so um I am just tonight going to just share what the summarization of those changes being proposed are and if I'm going to kind of go Section by section if there are any questions you're welcome to let me know um the first section is the addition of new courses and in this section uh what we um mainly are proposing is there's a couple of online classes since Global has taken off
093as a um School entity um we want to make sure that we're offering um elective options for them as well and so there was the recommendation to add a couple of artificial intelligence uh classes those would be offered as elective credit uh another one would be to add IB computer science there the last 2 three years we've really been growing the IB program at Gilbert High and that is a course that they haven't quite needed and they're at the point in the development of their program that they would like to add that in the last couple of years we've really tried to focus on adding unified classes to create an inclusive uh culture on our campuses so our campuses would like to add a unified woodworking class that's something that I are uh students have
094been requesting what does that mean unified so unified is with our special education students working with our gened students as um kind of parallel Learners and so uh students that have been through a Class 1 to two years depending on what the class offering is we deem them is kind of a student expert in that area this goes back to the foundational pieces of whatever that unified class is and our students on campus then get to work with them and our partner together with those students to help them get that same life experience in class depend I mean with this one it's woodworking but you'll see Unified Dance unified culinary whatever the the elective offering is so does it create kind of a mentor mentee correct atmosphere it does absolutely thank you yes another offering
095we would like to propose uh is an officiating Sports class really excited about this one Our Community Education uh Department along with our athletics department has had a little bit of a shortage with uh efficients and getting referees and so trying to problem solve and think outside of the box this class would allow students to start the certification in that and then do some volunteer hours to go and officiate Our Youth Sports and support our um Gilbert Athletics and youth programs this is a really I really like this program and I know that one of our uh superintendent goals this year is private and Public Partnerships this may be a good opportunity there may be to may be a good opportunity to explore some private Public Partnerships through the Youth Sports programs as far as
096providing officials or having them come in and teach our kids how to officiate things like that this is excellent thank you and that's a perfect segue into the fact that we uh Mr mcdal and Mr Houston actually worked with the AIA to um work on what this curriculum should look like there's going to be an online component that um we also worked with global Academy on housing that and the AIA is working with us to basically do the certification and do the training um for free for our students and so I don't know what that will evolve or turn into but people are catching wind of this and other districts are already hitting it I'm like it's not even an approved class yet U but I have a feeling that this one's really going to
097take off in the world of Youth Athletics thank you absolutely and this and this would count for PE credit um yes it could uh you know what we put it as elective okay there was conversation because while they're officiating the sports there would be some activity there um but with it being the first year we really went back and forth and decided on elective for now and once we really feel like we have adequate evidence of what that truly is uh we weren't sure if we were quite there to add the PE credit but I'll probably back be back here in another year's time to make that proposal but I'm open to the suggestion here no I'm just thinking it might be even more attractive so maybe we incorporate the things that we would need
098to to make it qualify for a PE credit at some point and like you said I'm fine with it this year being this way it'll be interesting to see what feedback you get yeah and I think right now the idea would be targeting um students who are athletes and the assumption is most of our athletes love PE and want to be involved uh but we don't want that to become like a reason like I think it could act it could be appealing to somebody so absolutely are these all a year-long courses uh right now everything I have discussed would be a year-long class yes um then you will see that there is a proposal again Global Academy only uh English 3 and English 4 honors level classes they are not equipped to um provide the
099AP classes the same way that our comprehensive um brick and mortar campuses can and but they don't want to withhold students from being able to get honors classes and if they are truly at an academically rigorous level and they can withstand an online honors curriculum then why not and so um we will offer these only at Global because we don't want our students at our comprehensive high schools that do have the opportunity to take the AP classes uh to not be on that pathway to take the AP um exams and then the AP anatomy and physiology there is a uh new proposal that is out there through college board I will be transparent it is not officially finalized yet uh this is similar to last year when we brought AP Calculus forward uh this is
100the time that they're creating the course and so I didn't want to miss the opportunity to add it into the book and be able to offer it next year if if uh and when College Board approves it so there would be um a need for our teachers to attend the AP summer Institute and get trained um and uh go from there last year we did this with AP Calculus and teachers were very excited they jumped at it did the training and we offering it this year so I don't think that the the timeline is unreasonable but um it would be added but we would only be able to offer it next year if it ends up getting college board approval so we're just trying to be proactive there so these are all the recommendations for
101new courses and I I can keep going or I can pause if there's questions I think we're asking as we go so if you want to keep keep going that beig great so the next type of change that we are proposing is a change in credit there are only two classes here the first one is our Unified Dance class uh often times our unified classes do not receive aore approval uh because the standards are um not all hit and it's maybe not always to the same uh rigor however the Unified dance class our sped coordinator did submit an application because she felt that it did meet the rigor and the standards within that course and we did uh receive aore approval so we're very very excited about that it's huge for our students um and
102then so that's just adding that verbiage in there that it does count as an AO credit um describe that that's yes I'm trying to be better with the acronyms it it does stand for the Arizona Board of Regents um which is the accreditation that um dictates what the entrance for universities and colleges are and then the second one is the business internship and career exploration we have students that are very Advanced that get to this level their junior year and are very passionate about serving this internship with businesses out in our community and uh we would like to propose that it can be repeated for credit but this is for students that truly are on that they would have to have taken it their junior year um obviously they they're not uh eligible to take
103this any sooner so so this is kind of a small population but we do have um some campuses that have students that are falling into that category so we want to allow them to be able to do that the next category of change is um in course descriptions the uh Air Force our Roc program uh we went through an audit we have a new instructor at Gilbert High who uh brings a wealth of knowledge and our gentlemen that run the program at Camp Alie High School worked with their supervisors and looked through the updated criteria they get it annually and we went ahead and made a few recommendations to just be in alignment with the program that comes from their supervisors from the Air Force um in addition you'll notice that that program is now
104going to be underneath our CTE uh they did go through what they needed to to become CTE certified and it will now be able to be offered as a CTE program and we've worked with Mr da our um director of CTE to make sure that we're in liance with that so just another opportunity that meets that criteria the next couple you'll notice and I'm going to on this page some of these are very similar to others so I'm going to kind of just Clump them together uh the next few that fall into our engineering we are updating the description and that is coming from the pltw which is a Project Lead the Way program similar to like an AP or an IB uh we kind of follow suit of what those program descriptions are um
105we are making uh a revision to the description of the service learning class which is a GCA only class they GCA was approved to be an AP Capstone campus just this last year and so this is um they're revising this a little bit to align with supporting that AP Capstone for those students um the next one the stock market it now meets the NCAA requirements so we're just adding in that little uh statement so that students and families know that it meets the criteria uh you'll notice that there are a couple of math classes there they are our dual enrollment calculus and Apel class uh we have aligned those to cgcc dual enrollment descriptions we have revised our Sports Medicine 1 and2 course descriptions to better align to CTE standards um and be more reflective
106of what the sports medicine program actually is and then the next several are language classes and all of those are being Chang to if they're the AP language classes to align to college board and then the onlevel non-ap classes um all were change to be reflective of the Arizona academic standards the next group of changes are in course name Dr cuck real quick on that will that like the world languages specifically would you we've changed the name and we've changed the description to align to the standards would you think that there's going to be any significant change to the course content itself or it just okay no the curriculum and the content will remain the same um I I will share uh cuz I almost passed over it cuz I'm in my groove right now
107um the prerequisite you'll also notice that there's a slight change there as well uh it used to say something along the lines of like you had to complete the prior year and or teacher application uh we did an audit of that and we across the board at at all of our schools we're not actually using a teacher application and so we have changed that to say proficiency of the prior year uh which then will um be up for determination of assessment scores um a teacher could use their judgment if they wanted to still create their own teacher application that would be fine but again we did not have anything uniformed across the district so we did want to make sure that the prere for all of our languages was consistent as opposed to if our
108Spanish teachers felt one way our French teachers felt another way kind of wanted some consistency there but as far as the actual teaching in the classroom to curriculum and standards all of that will remain the same okay and then uh the changes in course name uh the choir classes um you'll notice this when I move into the junior high uh changes as well but we are working really hard the last couple years it's been to kind of um really clean up uh what is there for our high school um and then Junior High separate and this year we really took a unique approach that we wanted to see that alignment 712 um we kept getting feedback from teachers that they felt like their programs if it's that they were lower in the junior high and
109how do we the high schools like oh we wish that they could grow the program at the junior high or vice versa one of the things that we are um thinking is that better aligning the programs to be consistent 712 would be beneficial so for example um last year we did some uh brief changes to our choir classes and um I wasn't sure how that was going to go for the year and we continued to get feedback and they actually loved the changes to the treble and the advanced treble and the bass Coral but what they found was that the title choir is more relevant the students seem to react and respond and know what that means a little bit more and we're seeing that shift happening across so simply just changing Coral to choir
110and that will be 712 and then the last one on here you'll see that there's several vocational Readiness courses we had several classes in the course description book for different levels of special education um students and really in Gilbert if you ask anyone uh what those students are doing it's called GPS transition program and then we would use these codes in different classes and it was more of a scheduling thing and so what we found is it added confusion to our parents who are really the ones that are looking this up and so we are making the change would like to make the change to GPS transition program and just lump all all of those into that so it's more transparent uh up next is the changes in fees and um on this one you
111will see that um I tried in the rationale section for the board members to just include um what that was but if I were to lump all of this into one category uh basically um some of these classes haven't been offered in a couple of years and so in the years past when other courses were requesting an increase in fees due to inflation they weren't on our radar because the classes weren't maybe making and now that we're getting back into um offering all the classes uh kind of post um coid um teachers are recognizing that the inflation has really affected the cost and so um all of these are due to inflation and materials this is one that we take very seriously so with the committee um they were all tasked with homework and had
112to go back and actually bring in receipts and show cost um and show when the last time the fee was increased as well so uh tried to do my due diligence there of what maybe you guys would be um curious about um I'm open to questions and then the bottom line is a little bit different uh we did an audit of all of the fees and we're trying to find ways to remove fees that were no longer relevant uh and so the stock market class um used to charge an $18 fee because there was only one way to sign up for the competition and now there's a bunch of free opportunities online and so there's no no need to charge our families that fee so we are proposing to remove that fee from this book
113I just had a question so does this qualify for waivers if some of our students can afford the fees absolutely so this is a waiver one okay yes all right and then the final section of summarization is uh where we would like to propose the removal of courses and uh there's a list of several courses there um a few of them were added as potential elective offerings for our special education students but they've historically never made and what we found is when these classes were proposed 2 three years ago even one of them was from last year we also were adding the unified classes and what we found was that our students want to be with their peers they want to be in the unified sections and so after tracking the data on the bottom
114three classes we proposed that we would like to remove them cuz we're just in a better habit of um creating that inclusive environment and pushing them into and really the request that the students have is they want to be in the unified classes and then the first handful on there uh we for the last 3 years I've done a data audit our tech department has helped me to pull the numbers uh for every single class that we offer in the district these uh have not been offered in four or five years so if they've not been being offered um or if something has replaced it like our CTE programs what's happened is it's not that the students don't want it anymore there's been other Pathways that maybe earn them CTE credit or AP credit or
115it's a dual opportunity and so we want to push the students into those programs and the evidence shows that that's what's happening cuz students are no longer signing up or requesting these classes so that is all the recommendations for our high school course description book are there any questions before we move to the junior high okay thank you very much the junior high now now the Junior High book um I will be on that the committee looked a little bit different historically it was pushed out to campuses in the same format counselors and teachers would put together request um and then pretty much we just accepted what our Junior highs would put forth to us and it was a few of us that would look at those and unless if something really stood out uh
116then it did go to the principles and then it would come back to the governing board um what we found is that in the last few years with our strategic operating plan um a lot of our initiative with our instructional framework even though they're not receiving uh for the most part High School Credit um which I think was the justification historically we really want our Junior High book to be in alignment with our vision and our goals as well and so um our campuses have been doing a lot of work with their continuous Improvement plans and our principles are aiming to be very strategic in their offerings and so if this doesn't support that it just is something that's working against our counselors our even our students if there's a pathway that is better for
117them and going to promote uh better success than we we should be intentional about that so um I share that because what we did this year is we actually put together our very first Junior High committee that mimics exactly what I described earlier with our high school committee uh it was very eye openening for a lot of us and what I found is that I uh wanted to make everything perfect and make a lot of changes and I realized that it's going to probably be more of a two-year project um and had to finally call it quits our Junior High group we spent days eight hours in a row room um and it was a lot and so uh we kind of all were at a point where we're like okay what do we really
118need to do but I just share that because next year when we come back um where this the changes have kind of slowed down with the high school um we recognize at the junior high and we are uh Mr stro is our Dean at um Gilbert High School and um he has volunteered to help we're going to do a committee from now until the next course description book where we do a more thorough and in-depth audit of our Junior High uh we didn't feel like we had as much teacher voice and so we wanted to press pause on some of the things we thought should happen um until we had more uh feedback from different stakeholders so just wanted to share that cuz we were kind of excited about it um the new courses we
119would like to add at the junior high uh unified theater additional opportunity for inclusion uh miachi music is a very popular and upcoming music program um I wasn't expecting them to be as passionate but when I went to go ask the question they all uh answered yes they want it before I could even finish asking and proposing the question uh a lot of our Junior highs already have clubs and are very excited to take this on to the next level as a class and um I was even informed that even all the way to our universities are having um full-blown music programs that support this as well so some opportunities for them to go um already they were talking about going to ASU and and watching their miai band and things like that so kind
120of they they were very excited about it um and then this one is a little bit highlighted honors geometry was not in our book but we do have some Junior High campuses or students that are taking the honors geometry and so I felt again out of transparency it should be in the book for our families if we know that students are taking the class so not really that it's new um as an offering but it would be an addition into the book um I do have a question about that so um when students are taking honors geometry are they continuing to travel from the junior high to the high schol school or are there classes of honors geometry taught on some of the junior high campuses so what we have actually been um able to
121do with our distance learning classrooms is set up a section that is at the same time as the high school class and use those distance learning Technologies to support that okay okay thank you so the next type of change for junior high is change in credit all of these are due to language um this is similar to the honor geometry these are offerings that are happening currently that just were not in the book and then we wanted to be consistent with the verbiage that was in all of the languages so honors Latin is currently offered to seventh and eighth graders at GCA so we want to put that in the book and then it will have the same verbiage that our Spanish 1 and two currently have for junior high they are high school classes
122um and the students if it's the same curriculum and same standards and span like we're kind of putting it into that same category um Japanese 1 and 2 and and the IB Spanish one and two are the two languages that are um currently being offered at Gams to support our IB program and um our high school level classes as well that the students are taking so right now these are kind of specific to those campuses however uh wanted to make sure that our Junior High book was um reflective of that because if a family member saw that maybe that would appeal them to be interested in GCA or Gams if they knew that that is an opportunity that they could get the next uh category for junior high is the changeing course description so you'll
123see I already T talk and I'm going to skip through some of this that's relevant to the high school conversation as well so Orchestra um those descriptions have been aligned to support the 712 Pipeline and to be more accurate our digital art mini uh wanted to make sure that that was more robust and accurate to how the course is currently being taught there's been some shifts with digital art in the nature of our soet like with technology advancements and things like like that uh the leadership development class uh wanted to make sure that was more robust and accurate uh some of these were previously like a one- sentence uh the students and student council well that doesn't really describe leadership so we wanted to make sure that it was really um describing what the course
124entails then our exploration of facts program uh we are aligning that and um several others in this section to kind of the CTE Pathways to better promote so if a student is excited about these classes in junior high there's a better articulation and vertical alignment into what that high school program is and so that would affect um kind of the descriptions that are there for uh fax our theater program um some of those classes that would fall into the applied technology and mini design which feeds into three different CTE programs at the high school so we just wanted to make sure that those CTE standards were representative in those as well and I think I have on all those uh courses to remove at the Junior High um we have uh life applications class there
125was just a duplicate in there so again just trying to be transparent and then clothing has not made in 3 years but there is a unit on sewing within the fax class that we already also offer so as far as that goes students would still have an opportunity there but the class hasn't made in 3 years and then there are three other classes that we listed on there to be four four classes to be removed that have not been offered in over 5 years not by a single student and then uh the final recommendation would be to add The City of Ember to our Junior High uh novel list and that is um gone through the process of committee review uh Community review and um there's a rubric that they kind of have to follow
126and go through and that uh they did complete that in time to have that proposed to the committee Dr Cox can you explain that proceed that overall um committee process for these reading books absolutely so uh typically teachers at first will be the first to make a recommendation um that it aligns with their curriculum or whatnot and with the addition of um the My perspectives um we tried to add in several books last year that we felt based on the curriculum uh being new um and what units and what our teachers were currently using so we did add a a handful last year this is one that um when it was recommended by the teachers we immediately started on the process so it is something that we um gather teachers um because it was coming
127from a specific campus we kind of started there uh we'll get um we'll ask for uh some parents to be a part of that as well they read it there's a a rubric to make sure that they are um adhering and that it doesn't meet certain criteria um and then at that point that comes back to uh our Ela coordinator who reviews the rubric similar to what you saw the ladies do today with the math presentation um and then that recommendation comes forward with all of that material to the course description book committee so then as a committee we look through the different input feedback the data analysis of that uh before we then bring that forward and I on that I don't mind even putting something together and sharing that because we have a
128very formal process that I'm probably not doing much Justice to uh but I would gladly share that with the entire board but if you wanted to kind of read through that more closely that'd be great absolutely are are teachers allowed to use novels in their classes that are not on the approved list to teach as a part of a unit uhhuh they are not supposed to okay just curious yeah I didn't know if there was a followup no our our approved uh novel list is what is supported and approved I will share that when we approve a curriculum sometimes there are pieces of novels or excerpts that are part of that approved curriculum and sometimes there's some confusion there uh where maybe they're reading a chapter or a few pages where parents will kind of
129question or ask or teachers or administrators it doesn't necessarily have to be parents um and because it was approved through the um curriculum um you may get excerpts that way uh but as far as a full novel front to back uh in full as a part of the lesson it has to be on the approved board list okay thank you you're welcome so on the previous page these classes that and I'm assuming when you say has not made in over five years I think you has not made that just means hasn't been offered or hasn't been what is that can you students have not requested it and it has not made on a campus so they have not it's not happened okay so I I'm particularly curious about this Holocaust studies class this isn't our
130kids are still learning about these in in their in their history class absolutely they are it is still a unit and honestly um this was one that when I saw it I I don't know the history of when the class was proposed or added uh but I guarantee it was probably a very passionate social studies teacher when you see elective off offerings that's usually kind of where they come from um but again the removal process comes strictly from just looking at the data got it yeah thank you you're welcome and then I did want to just share too that at the junior high when we did an audit of the fees um there was a current calculator rental fee that has just been there for a very long time that's $35 um we have over
131the last several years purchased calculator sets for our classrooms and at the junior high often times it's the students that are taking Algebra 1 that need the graph calculators they all have classroom sets now teachers will loan those out they're not collecting fees and so we just felt like there's no point to have that there because we' kind of gotten away from charging our families for that fee so that'll be removed from the book welcome and that concludes the summary of recommendations that we would like to make to our course description book if there's any further questions are there any questions no but um I do have to say the Dr Cox was very patient with me and answered all my questions previously so that I wouldn't have to bore all of us with my
132concerns they were great questions so thank you thank you for the work that you put into that you know I was wondering do we do our parents I'm I'm I like that you're saying that you're trying to make it more and more applicable for use by our parents and I'm just wondering do they use it I'm asking myself that I would say that if you were to ask our counselors they would say absolutely our counselors are an integral part of this and honestly I would like to just publicly thank them I don't know how many of them watch the board meetings uh I hope so but um they have done a really great job we've included more counselors in this process that if you went to any of our Junior higher high schools and walked
133into a counseling office and said where's your course subcription book they would pick it up off their desk within seconds so where students and parents may not articulate that they are going to it and finding it on the website and and referencing it maybe during registration season for sure but our celor are they use this to guide all of their conversations and when they are supporting parents they will send them hey look at page 14 this is what can really help or hey I think your student really could qualify for these honors and AP classes take a look at this information so it does uh make its way there but I think that's important I think I hope that we do encourage and use and provide and find ways especially as you're making it more
134and more relevant and important you know in in their students I was even wondering if we should do a Elementary to sorry I keep I'm just saying I don't know that we should but I was just thinking if I like that they're making the high school and I thought that was a good idea to include even all the programs across the district because we're always trying to figure out how do we let families know what is actually available and so I was like I wonder if I don't know that that's the right way but where is you know again is there one place where we can just show there's many different options for families in even within our district from school to school so that was just a I don't know something to think about
135in elementary schools there aren't not courses there aren't options there's programs there's programs actually someone suggested to me years ago that you do it like a camping map you know you can look at a camping map and say okay there's a lake there's restrooms there's a river and just kind of every school and kind of saying what the programs were avail more like I'm saying the accelerated or the gied programs and the traditional or you know just different we do have a lot of options so some way of helping friend see that dual dual language or yeah dual immersion you know so okay well thank you really appreciate that and all the work yes thank you very much can we just take let's take a five minute recess is that okay everybody five minute recess
136and we'll be back for 3.03 just we still got half are we ready we're ready okay thank you very much a great job did a lot thank you I think these were all important And Timely things that we've addressed tonight so I know it's a little bit lengthy but really important yeah yeah so thank you all this is good stuff good 3.03 it's okay spring 2023 accountability accountability letter grades Dr mord thank you madam president govering board members um the letter grades were released by the Department of Education I think it was November 1st was it yeah and um we wanted toe present our findings I'm very proud of our schools I'm very proud of our uh teachers support staff and administrators um they always work extremely hard and I think our letter grades uh
137bore that out and uh big thank you to our teaching and learning Department who helped make sure everybody has everything they need in order to get that done so I will turn it over to Mr Ryan and his team thank you Madame President governing board memb ERS and Dr McCord um really excited to share with you some results this evening um as Dr mcord mentioned the letter grades were um released a few weeks back um those letter grades were were moving a little bit over the last few days before they became official and so um a bit nerve-wracking leading up until that point in time particularly where you have um campuses that are that are kind of between scores or depending on how things are going to flush out in the end or what the
138state is ultimately going to determine maybe a cut score is going to be that we're is out of our control uh what we focus on are the things that we do control we focus on tier one instruction we focus on specific processes and initiatives across our district such as mtss and our multi-tiered systems of student supports um focus on our PLC work we focus on the curriculum adoptions and what we put in the hands of our teachers and supporting our students um that being being said we also try to learn what this what the system is looking for uh we're naive if we don't pay attention to what the state is looking for asking us for or how they maybe are changing their systems um as we go through that process annually uh between Mr
139burer Dr Cox um Miss Taylor Mr Martin Dr Martin um all of us work together this isn't a teaching and learning thing this isn't an admin Services thing it starts with Dr McCord governing board and we're all charged with keeping up on on um the latest and greatest when it comes to this topic we need to make sure that our students are prepared and teachers are prepared but we also need to make sure that we're representing our entire Community to the best of our ability so we're excited tonight to share a brief overview of what the results show us at our upcoming governing board retreat will spend time really diving into what makes up each of the letter grades what what we have found at various levels um Elementary looks different than Junior High which
140looks different than high school and so it's going to take some time to really dive into it but I think it's important that we all understand uh how we're measured and um how as campuses and now as a district with a full districtwide letter grade um how we're we're judged based on that um if you go to the kind of the first page where it talks about accountability and letter grades uh we've put together a two-year comparison so you can see them um next to one another as well as then um highlighting where we've seen increases of course we always want to see increases in each of our campuses um we're excited this year that we have a large number of our campuses particularly at the elementary level where we've seen positive Trends um I'll
141let Robert jump in if he wants to highlight anything um specifically there within our elementary schools in total overall point increases in our elementaries 17 campuses moved in a positive direction from one year over the next and nine of our campuses actually experienced a change in letter grade if I can move so here's the two-year comparison 17 of our elementary schools pointwise pure points moved in a positive direction increased um and nine of our campuses actually improved their letter grade um where this becomes really important is within the entire School letter grade which is calculated honestly it's exactly like a GPA that we all experienced when we were in school an a is a 4.0 a b is a 3.0 and so on so forth um districts as a whole were measured based on did
142you meet the criteria of a 3.5 or above and you round to a 4.0 and that gives you your a that's as simple as it is and so um as we looked at each of our campuses obviously the goal is always to be an a we believe that what's going on on each campus um is reflective of of a quality work but we also uh need to open our eyes when maybe that isn't that isn't quite the result that we're experiencing and analyzing and try to understand why that's kind of the work that we'll go through during the retreat and talking about specifics that we are seeing at various levels um and what initiatives we're working toward right now to address those deficiencies if any um at this point though we're really excited to celebrate
143the 17 that have moved in a positive direction and overall volume of schools that have reached the a level I just have to give a quick shout out so we had 19 A's at the elementary level so I think that is huge and really a testament to all we're trying to build a solid foundation for the district um then I wanted to give a special shout outs for um we had Canyon Rim and Sonoma Ranch so 50% of the grade is based off and we'll go into this in the board retreat is based off student growth and those two schools maximize student growth and got 50 out of 50 points so I think that is huge so I wanted to give them a special recognition absolutely the next page goes into our secondary schools where
144we're seeing similar Trends um secondary schools are rated in a different way and the different uh calculations that go into that um are plentiful um the high school calculation is extremely complicated with a number of variables that we will into and that each of our campuses are learning a tremendous amount about they're educated on uh everything from our classroom teachers to our counselors um our site administrators and our principles are leading the way um there and we're seeing positive movement as well um four of our campuses had Point increases and two had overall grade increases um with the results that you see there Dr Cox is there anything you want to add so when we put these together overall we're excited to to celebrate 23A schools across Gilbert Public Schools 12 B's uh 92% of
145our schools who rate is an A or better with 11 schools increasing their letter grade um so moving from a b to an a um overall as a district then that comes out to over the 3.5 GPA that was needed in order to be identified as an a school district or Lea um in the case of the state during the board retreat we're going to get into specifics with regard to proficiency um you've heard a lot about subgroups we're going to talk specifically about different groups of students elll um special education um for introduced subgroups graduation rate is always a topic of conversation on our high school campuses um a number of initiatives across the board on our high school campuses that have been led by Miss Taylor and Dr Cox that are having huge
146results across the board uh where we are today is exciting but where we're going to be in the next couple years is is a whole different level and um we're excited to share with you during our time together that day um the specifics behind the planning that's going into that the instructional framework through our our professional development department curriculum training math curriculum adoption our instructional coaches everyone is part of this so I I guess the point being in in kind of celebrating this and Dr mcord did a great job and at an upcoming fam meeting we'll be celebrating with banners and and schools being recognized for their great work is to know that this isn't just by happen stance it isn't um we wake up or we cross our fingers and Hope on the day
147that those scores are revealed that we're in a good place this is year round non-stop Relentless pursuit of identifying ways to improve uh when we improve what that means is students are reading students are writing students are enjoying their their their time with us in Gilbert public schools and they're graduating with options we talk all the time about graduating with options that's really our job you walk across a stage as a senior I get to choose as an 18-year-old what it is that I want to do with my future we want to make sure that that isn't um that isn't changed as a freshman in high school because maybe we take the wrong class or as a as a junior who isn't prepared for college admissions and and now we're not prepared or ready to
