003sorry like maybe I can't see her I my okay thank you uh Terry mission and vision okay the found Public Schools Mission the found Public Schools creates world class student learning experiences our Clippers are sorry can we stop it's me I'm sorry I'm sorry [Music] it's still going sorry okay the found of public schools creates world class student learning experiences our Clippers are empowered to pursue their goals with curiosity integrity and resiliency the vision Clippers are creative inquisitive and engaged Learners who participate in their Community as socially responsible citizens Clippers effec L communicate and solve problems that impact the world around them thank you so much um so I just wanted to start meeting with two announcements um one is that our hearts are of course with mashby tonight as they grieve the loss of

004a member of their school community and injuries to four others in an overnight accident um two of our students were also involved in that accident that many of us have already heard about and from a statement earlier today that went to the high school these types of events impact all of us in unexpected Ed ways counselors will be available to meet with anyone who needs it on Friday June 28th between noon and 2 at the fouth high school library and uh students can also reach out to miss F from the high school at cfal f.k. us um so from tragedy almost tragedy we also want to take a moment to recognize a few members of our school Community who assisted in the saving of a life uh of a four-year-old child at Bruce Pond uh

005a week or so ago and we are so grateful for their awareness and the assistance that they provided that prevented a true tragedy um we had five students that assisted and were there that day lolaa lily Joyce Emma rakott Alana Perry Tatiana Rosa and her mom Melinda vandus and uh Melinda is also one of our bus drivers um so just to take a second to to honor them and say thank you they are going to tune in tonight and thank you for for your AC of heroism um moving on to public comment members of the public are welcome to speak about items that are not on the agenda comments are limited to 2 minutes in length due the open meeting while the com committee cannot comment on public comment items uh for items that are

006on the agenda the chair May accept comments from the public following the committee's discussion comments can also always be sent to the committee at school committee at . K12 ma. us do we have any public comment do we have any attendees that have public comments okay moving along to our presentation on the fth high school project Adventure come on up all right cool if you can just um tell your name yeah hi everyone uh my name is Kaitlyn dugre U most fous FY coach I teach te health and Adventure at fouth high school and have for S years now um I want to thank you all for giving me a chance to PCH our program if you will and let you know what our PE department is doing and what we're hoping to do in

007the future particularly with our adventure program so I'm appreciate of your time tonight um project Adventure not that one while way get to the front there um project Adventure has existed at F high school for over 30 years um it started in the 7s as so we project Adventure our class and then there's also a project Adventure they are a um private nonprofit that does um adventure and experiential education um workshops they facilitate they do trainings they do certifications they also build and inspect courses um so they're considered a industry vendor across the board and and they were the original creators of what we know as project Adventure um at the high school uh when I came to fouth I was task with taking a prject adventure from a unit or an activity within our

008PE curriculum and turning it into a semester long course um to give you an idea of the scope of that um our semesters are about 20 weeks long uh we have class four to five times a week so I'm seeing students about 80 times a semester um so I was able to build out that that curriculum um and get project Adventure as one of our course offerings within our PE and Health Department there yes at at F High School um what we do at the high school is all of our crushman [Applause] [Music] te all of our crushman take ninth grade health and PE um sophomores take uh 10th grade health and PE and then their Junior and Senior year they need to take two more PE courses they can always take more than that

009but they have to take at least two and we have um seven different offerings that we have for them uh independent study exploratory PE lifetime activities team games um Personal Fitness Wellness leaders and then project Adventure um of those seven project Adventure lifetime activities team games um are the main ones where we tend to offer at least four or five sections or classes of those every year so they are um the meet and Bones the most popular of our options that we offer so um if you want to go to the next slide that' be fabulous so what is this thing in prject Venture um prject Adventure uh is a is based in experiential education so that's the experiential learning cycle um I utilize the experiential learning cycle on what I'd call like a macro

010scale with every activity that we do every day throughout a semester and then I also feel like I've sort of accidentally thematically organized my entire semester to follow that cycle on a larger scale as well um the experiential learning cycle is having an experience of doing a thing and then coming together and debriefing reflecting on that what did we want what happened here and then taking that thinking and you know hypothesizing and thinking about what does this mean for us can I conceptualize this can I apply this to my life in a different way somewhere else and then we take all that learning and we apply it to the next thing or we do something else and adjust the skills that we've learned um this course is my absolute pride and joy um it's why

011I even applied to work and found with Public Schools um I have said this to Alan Harris before that the only reason I show back up for school in August is because of this class and because of what my students do and who they become and the things we do by the end of the semester um and one of those being um our culminating experience which is our fire circle ceremony I won't tell you all the details cuz I don't think it's allowed but I do it anyways and um with our fire circle ceremony um that's where they do uh sort of each class gets an opportunity to reflect on our entire semester together and then think about what that means for them moving forward and they do that by they randomly get a name

012from their class and they get a chance to speak about that classmate they don't know it ahead of time they get some time to think about it and what students have shared and that experience um and also the learning that I take away I share about them as a whole cohort every time and it's just like that brings me back that makes me believe in public education and particularly the experience of project Adventure so what a semester looks like for them um I take them through what I sort of loosely call units just because um it's a little different when we're doing experiential learning um you can go to the next one thank you L um so we start uh we start the semester with community building and making connections with our classmates um and

013typically most of the activities during that time are what we call Ground games um so those are things that you might know of as as like initiatives Cooperative games um Get to Know You activities uh and so like on the left there I know these photos aren't fantastic but on the left there that's a really um one of my favorite activities I do towards the end of our community building called blocked perspective um where students learn about perspective perception and by default we end up having conversations around empathy and what it is to make space for others and to see it from their lens and how that can inform the way that we make decisions and work together as a group um after community building we move into more problem solving and creativity um and

014that's uh if you talk to any of my former students they will tell you about all the crazy challenges and activities that coach gives and that they have to figure out together um and that's a place where we take sort of the group forming and norming we tend to see some storming when we move into that part of things but that's all part of the process for them they've created um their own group Culture and they use the accountability and the expectations that they've set as a full class to help them get through different challenges of problem solving opportunities um when I move from that into um risk uh that's when I started introducing low elements um the picture on the right it's not the best photo uh all those students are on a very

015small balance board and that particular low element um activity they are tasked with multiple levels of meeing to change their location um and do that in different ways and a lot of the low elements uh cannot be done nor can the problem be solved unless they physically engage and emotionally support everyone in class it's an Allin effort um so that's why we build up to it after Community Building um then uh we move into risk and Leadership and risk is the piece of the class that I enjoy the most um I think it's the most applicable to life for them and by the end of the semester I think based on the conversations and how I'm able to work with students I think it's really successful um we dive into the zones of proximal development

016which is like education speak for basically how we learn um so we have our comfort zone and that's the stuff that is easy second nature to us brushing our teeth and then we have our stretch Zone which is the only place for learning can take place if we're not in that zone we aren't learning anything we're either really comfortable or we're in that third Zone we're in some version of Crisis or Panic um so with our students this year I went to um the International Conference for experiential education and I took back a way to facilitate teaching about those zones and it's a really cool activity with different cards and experiences and they had a chance to place them where it was for them then they got the chance to go move stuff so you

017might not agree with everybody else in class and it was really interesting to see um in all of my classes different cards like there would be groups of kids following each other they're like that's a panic for me and they're like no it's not I'm going back and forth and you know one of the things I put on a card that I think illustrates what it's like to be in this class and the opportunities for our students you know I had put walking alone at night put it out there and one of my smaller classes this year um I had a student of color and a gender non performing student and their entire class engaged in 10 minutes of the most rich conversation about what that meant for them and I had other students in

018class who were like oh I never would have thought about that for you and it's that kind of learning that adventure learning and and experiential education lets happen naturally they were in I didn't I didn't make that conversation take place it was a card that was everybody kept moving it back and forth it was like what's the deal like why are we here with this and they had already built enough of a relationship with each other that they could have these deeper conversations and take something away that meant something um so once I get to that place and we have a strong Community they understand risk and how to navigate that with each other that's when we do what we're really here about tonight and that's the high ropes part of our class um you

019can click on if you like worry so as you can imagine um we take students that and have have admitted that they would never hang out with so and so that's in class before and by the end of the semester they literally trust that individual with their life that's a pretty substantial thing um we take some time to learn some technical skills um our students here do a lot more than other Adventure programs when I've gone to trainings and certifications of other folks like coach do you let students Bay like what do you do and I'm like yeah it was like does baffling to me that they didn't and I think that comes from one just the scope of our program and the effort that our students put into in their level of being engaged

020um this picture on the left to give you some context those feet on the bottom those are mine um I'm up in the air um I had uh our students fet us up they built up to that this is the third type of ballet that they learn how to do which is a primary ballet so I'm up in the air and then I have enough faith in my students based on how they've performed and they have enough faith in each other that then I can be 7 feed off the ground and they can safely run through the safety protocols to clip in and get their classmates ready to go safely blay them from the top you know obviously I give visual checks and you know some directions from above but in reality if something goes

021wrong it's on them right and I don't say that to scare you I say that for you to have confidence in the strength and power of this program and the impact that it has on our students um yeah looks pretty cool uh so if you want to click to the next one um this is our course right now sorry for the pencil drawing um the top right there it's a little zipline that top rightand Corner um that's just over half our course that is what failed inspection this past September um the polls that make that course um were from the 80s and 90s so it give you a sense of how long that they lasted you know I I recognize them here pitching for a pretty substantial investment from the district and the town but

022it's one that's going to pay and last for us for a really long time um so when that half of the course failed I lost um what amounted to about a month and a half worth of my curriculum so I had to figure out some different things to do this past spring we did it it was fine um and you know we foresee U project Adventure who they have the proposal that I think you all have seen um we have a really wonderful working relationship with them uh they have no and inspected our course for literally decades um so I was able to go in with them and kind of talk about the dreams we have down the road you know I know my conversations with Allan and my various department heads that we see

023project Adventure as having a larger impact on our entire School Community not just being a single course that folks take their junior or senior year um and so part of the course rebuild that we'd like to see accounts for that um it has some elements in there that would would potentially allow us to offer a second adventure-based PE class that is more advanced has some more technical skill stuff in it so that might one appeal to a slightly different student but also allows a matriculation and two different experiences on the same course um it would also it's of a size that I can have my project Ure class curriculum exist as it is and then offer in-house trainings and opportunities for our athletic teams for our clubs for um our student groups that would like

024to do that and not have that take away from them if they were taking the course as well and I think that's a pretty amazing opportunity we are the only school on Cap Cod doing this and doing it to this scale um it's a it's a pretty unique opportunity and um if you fli to the next one Lori um that picture there it's a panoramic or sorry that it's small a little bit skewed but um we for me I had applied for found education Foundation Grant last year um about project Adventure because I believe in this so much and I wanted other people to see it's potential um so uh found Education Foundation awarded us a substantial Grant to go for two days to project Adventure in Beverly which is where this picture comes from

025um that particular element is known as a quad and that is the general structure for the um course rebuild that they proposed to us and um on the quad uh there's a huge group that activity which is taking place here um Alan will talk about standing on the pizza box and falling off and and then in between each of the corners there's one to two elements on it so it's a really efficient use of space and allows us to over time add more things if we would like to um but it also keeps things kind of centrally located as well um we took 40 students and staff from all different student clubs and student government um and advisers teachers um staff members stat counselors and we went to PA and and when we came back

026um I then facilitated in-house two separate sessions with our student government and when we got back from the last day that one of the advisers for the Hope Squad came to me and she said kayn how do I get my club here and I said you don't it's too expensive and she was like what um but I said we can do it here we have the potential to do that and this course we build would not only you know sustain a program that has been in found ofic schools for a really long time and one that I think um serves our PE Department really well and is a really wonderful experience for our students it would also allow us to bring in more students than just the ones that take that particular class um I

027think that's a lot of talking for me so I'm sure you all have questions uh then please fire away uh are there any questions as you saw um probably when you looked at the capital plan there's a line for project Adventure which which is why this is so timely um so any questions about project Adventure or the expansion I don't have any questions but I have some comments sure so my freshman year was the first year of project Adventure it was required by all freshman and um it was not met with by some students I that student it wasn't met with a love and I didn't want do it it's not my jam by the end so we had to take it our first quarter and our fourth quarter of our freshman oh interesting okay

028and it was required for for our freshman year yeah and then after that you could take it as many times or never again I never take it again but I love how um people who have gone through the program since then have completely fallen in love with it my husband who is more than a few years younger than me when he was at the high school he loved it he took took it as many times as he possibly could I love knowing that our kids that selfishly our our own personal children but other children have gone through this are going to go through this and I love that you have so much passion for it and that you've really morphed it into something for today it's not just about laying with people that you talk

029to like twice a year kind of thing it's about the trust it's about um creating Partnerships with each other with you know I I see you in the hallway I don't recognize you um but now we're in this class and I know that ultimately we're going to have to work something out I love that you have uh the students think out of the box and have meaningful conversations not just and it's not just about you know doing the ropes course and doing all the fun things um but it's really about life lessons and um I also love that you came here for it because I don't know that it would have continued at least in the capacity that it is today so um personally I want to thank you for that um and I think

030I can thank you for a lot of other uh alumni as well that it you've really done a great job with it and um I guess that's it I I love that what you're doing and quite honestly should you ever think about a size hustle you could probably do it for adults too so are you signing up I see a school committee retreat in other reason to watch Melissa squir I I often have students who sign up or who ask and you know guidance calls me and they're like yeah they're afraid of heights I'm like that it doesn't matter there are so many different roles and the way that it built out the experiences I have students who never leave the ground and they have a meaningful experience they're in their stretch Zone they are

031they find a different role supporting and doing other things you know I had a student this year she tore her ACL in a game and was still able to come to class cuz we had so many things that have to happen I was like here's your chair and then you do all the harness inspections and like and everybody loaded it they were like she's the best at it and they would go over and make sure that they were good to go to time and I I think that's a piece of it is I feel like Adventure I teach a lot with metaphor and I tell them like this is life we're just doing it with play and having them move through that and figure out there are different ways for you to be a part

032of a community and figuring out how to connect with folks even if you have to function in different role than you're used to there I have a question it's not philosophical it's just technical yeah go for it Bay yes could you just demonstrate exactly what yeah do you mind going to the picture with the green rope it's two photo side by side so the group of three that are on the hand side that are super small down below um what they're engaging is what we call primary ballet so um they're wearing a harness the person that has the green climbing rope and they're using an ATC device which uses friction and rope Bend in order to hold weight and break the Rope if you will a break meaning stop it okay um so that rope

033comes up and it goes over my head and through SRD which is a sheer reduction device um in other words we don't want rope to be folded completely in half so it rounds it out nicely um and then that rope goes down to the climber and is clipped into their harness um use a climbing knot and then um uh car there so as that person climbs up the Bayer is going to pull slack out of the Rope line always keeping it Tau um and every time they do that they then end up putting that rope on break so I can hold that rope with two fingers and Sally whose climbing can jump off the element and she's not going to go anywhere okay and then um then I would lower her down by releasing some

034of that friction in the ble system so that's one so that's the so primary ble is the a student really is running the whole system um that's the last of the blets that I teach them um we do a Australian blob ble um which literally uses weight as a counterbalance so it's a minimum of three people on the ground they're all tied in to the end of the rope and the the other end of the Rope goes to the climber and they just walk back so it's pely their body weight that's keeping that individual off the ground that's the first one we do it's pretty foolproof um and then we do team ballet which takes this primary ballet and takes each part of it and makes it an individual person's job so you end up

035with like five or six people they're all equally responsible for the success of that b Sy thanks it's great to hear all the details and how deep it is because as parent of uh not the theay part but the whole not just the whole thing CU as a parent of a teenager all you hear is like zipline was awesome you know get all of the the rest of it so thank you so much ask questions yeah um I I love that you're incorporating all these other metaphorical and life lesson things into this and um it's just so meaningful it seems like a very life-changing experience I've been to the one in Beverly and it's awesome yeah it's pretty I love that you want to make it go there so I was wondering what is this

036um money set aside for is it for bringing it up to code is it for adding things so um the course that we have um is what they would call a pole course meaning that it's all built on um Power Line poles if you will not trees so you can have courses that utilize trees okay um so our pole course um half of it failed um the poles are from the 80s really old so we had over 2 in of rot like underground so we don't want to climb on that anymore um we need a new course we can't Band-Aid those poles um so the 150,000 would be to re to build an entirely new course um we're anticipating in my conversations with project Adventure um the thing that didn't fail was our Tower and

037then we have one other freestanding element um and that tower has unusually large electrical poles on it they're like this um so that's the only reason it hasn't failed is because there's just so much wood there that as the outside is not great um but I would say I think they might make it this coming year um if they didn't I wouldn't be surprised I'm just going to be frank so you know that's why you know Lor's been really wonderful as I've been kind of keeping her updated with this is hey when I got here I was like so we should probably plan for a course rebuild at some point because it's going to happen um so I think that that timeline is is coming quicker than we expected yeah and we're going to move

038this footprint yeah most likely yes thank you yeah absolutely [Music] questions can I say something now so when coach was hired project adventor was popular it was good but she you took it to a whole new level and it got much more popular with kids expanded just so much of what the course entailed so very very impressive thank you so much thanks [Music] for all right right moving right into the capital plan and it's right at the top of the list um so it's first read um for all the next three things the capital plan um handbooks and re revised policies it's our chance to to take our first look at it and um ask questions make comments and then it'll come back a second time for a vote is this different than no it's

039the same oh okay same as what we already have same what we that's okay Mak there no changes the has it done thank you all right Paul take it away good so um so here's the list of projects the total value for for the projects for uh you know ultimately that would be voed on is 1,543 um you see near the bottom of the page um the playground uh CBC fun playground being proposed that's uh not part of the vote for next week that's we're looking at Community preservation funds for that so um but it's listed as some of the capital projects that we have so um starting at the top the high school obviously 150,000 is C just explained for project Adventure uh that's a direct estimate from Project adventure to rebuild that um

040the second one down is mobile phone infrastructure so um we had a previous article for $250,000 put in mobile phone INF infrastructure for the high high school we brought in a design firm to actually tell us how to execute project and uh the original thought was that there was equipment that you could go out and buy and just place it in the high school unfortunately if you go out and spend $80,000 on equipment uh the mobile phone companies could back and say you can't use that you can't download our signals and that you'd lose that money so we had to R redesign how we were approaching this uh with Evolution RF was our a designer on this with extensive experience building this for commercial based buildings Office Buildings and so on so the biggest component

041of this is Ling Fiber Optic Cables throughout the high school uh so that's why the cost is so high we did have three build bids uh they were all in the 450 range uh within a few thousand so it gives you a sense that you know uh everybody was in there uh and you know there's no excessive bidding in this that we're looking at very close beds we have more than that there were some that were close to a million dollar so uh you know obviously that's not under consideration it's uh but this amount this 250 would have to be added on to the article uh that had been is a couple years old now so the total would be um you know Coos of [Music] $500,000 um and this is you know if you're

042in the building and you're walking down the hallways and at any different point there's virtually no mobile uh coverage in that building so I mean if Dr Harris was walking down the hallway and had to get touch an emergency and mobile phone to talk to door you're not going to be able to do it um um and so it's it's a critical gradient of safety to have that infrastructure in there uh but the wiring also it will be helpful for future technology needs to uh as well it's having fiber cables for so um uh it's an expensive item but it's a needed it the next uh uh project down is this design work for the exterior in particular there are three doors that have drainage issues some of you saw this on the tours of

043the F High School um where water sort of pulls up if you have a heavy downpour the drainage outside the doors is insufficient to move that water away from the door and so you see with the field hous is for example that entrance way that uh there's a small very thin strip of drainage uh that is meant to capture that water that's excessive it's not nearly have a capacity so it has to be torn up it has but it has to be redesigned number one torn up and then you know nrage put in uh systs put into capture the water what we experience is extensive flooding on heavy down fls I it was at this somewhere but uh this spring we had a serious downpour and it flooded all through the Fieldhouse down the hallway

044uh Etc so uh and we're redoing floors as we'll come down to later on in this list so it's we really want to get these drainage issues solved so that 26,000 is the design work um we'll come back with the what the construction cost would be uh at a later point but t so of the first step on this the next item down is the uh the phone system which is actually a phone system an intercom system and the the Bell System High School um actually two con the the actual system the computer system software that's related to that and then you have cost related to the uh to the phone system Etc so uh and this is you know all integrated so the phone system and the uh intercom and the Bell System is

045all operated within one system um and you know today for example if you go to change the bell schedule you do have to do it manually uh so and it's on an old analog device um and so the new system will allow you to say okay we have a half day today you can hit a button and that will change all the schedules but otherwise Marcel's in there changing manual all schedules every other day and it's a prequit change in your B schedules uh obviously the intercom system is critical for uh announcements especially safety announcement and each of the classrooms uh have phone systems and landlines in as well so that's roughly 105,000 we've had repeated failures of this system so where you cannot make outgoing call phone calls and you cannot make incoming you

046cannot receive incoming phone calls so the system uh and they cannot be repaired so the component parts of the system are not available to to replay so this is a critical piece of uh Safety and Security for for the high school another uh you know ongoing problem has been the uh Skylight in the Fieldhouse um the only high school that has to have rain gates for basketball games on the door uh and you know the and this this goes back to the installation of the Skylight when the when the uh when it was first installed so the what we're looking at design options here uh and that's $28,000 and that is either to replace the Skylight know to uh another option would be to repair it uh to see if there's anything to valuate repairing

047it or third option is uh potentially just building the structure around it so so the designer uh will come back and tell us here what our options are on that's kind um I have a quick question on the Skylight when you say build a structure around it do you mean get rid of it yeah that would be one option depending on the cost not that that would have to look at those three options I have no idea if you know if this is a million doll problem depending on the design or if it's something more reasonable um you're just going to have to get to that stage when the designer comes back to us and tell us what our options are okay any other questions about the F School line yeah I have the question

048about the Skylight because on the tour from what I remember it really seems like it's impossible to do anything with the Skylight the way it is because it's a problem and so I I guess I'm wondering why we're going to spend $28,000 to go over the information we already have that it's impossible I mean I know there's a commitment to the Skylight I mean I wonder that there's loads of people who want that Skylight it's fantastic it's beautiful it's wonderful however it's not workable and so I guess I'm concerned about spending $28,000 for a design when we know it's some I I'm I'm not at that point yet to say it's unworkable I I thought that's what I heard in the tour that it was like a real problem in terms of the people had

049gone over it many times and it seems like there's a consistent problem yeah no we haven't had a designer in there to actually tell us that um we've had a number of benefits to repair it we haven't had architectural and Engineering FR come in and design it if we close off that s Skylight it's not just building a you know uh uh Square structure around it we're going to have to support the beams internally and so on that you know um these options are really you know to we really need to study these options before we decide in the future it won't be inexpensive to do this work so I think you know while we've been trying to patch it in the past we really need the experts to come in and tell us what

050the uh what the solution is than um regarding the Skylight it's been a problem since 1974 and many attempts have been made to repair it as you know um we'll have difficult discussions on that line at town meeting but it finally probably needs to be done um regarding the phone the mobile phones and the phone system itself um what's the timeline once we get approved at town meeting in November and um in regards to getting these repairs done or these systems put in place because this is a big safety issue as far as I'm concerned it is especially the phone system could bar be done through the school year at some point when the school's on vacation the mobile infrastructure they're going to be need to be in that school for 3 to 4 weeks

051to label wires so it's hard to do that in while schs and in sessions so that would probably be the summer of next summer so if we get the allocation of funds in November uh at town meeting the landline system can be most likely be replaced shortly thereafter the phone system would probably have to wait to this okay without disrupting U at the very people in the building all day longay any any way we can get something from the town in regards to get getting this going before November on the M on any on either of them just to I know the time frame is short now even in the summer but I totally understand the mobile system has been issue forever I mean Mary can speak to that I certainly was when I came

052in and we have been trying to figure out you know way to make that happen the I I mean I feel like the the bone system as long as there is a bone system at least getting back in operation at least puts us back to where we've we've you know been before the problem is that the phone system is also failing yeah so um and that that can be done over one of our recess so okay yeah I think if at least we can get that and get that in then I think we can look at the other what happens when it does go down they have to manually reset it and then it comes comes back on but they they you know have to physically do that several times um the close for short

053period of time so it's not that it goes down and you're out the phone system for week the phone system includes the intercom system so is there communication capabilities between the various classrooms within the building uh I believe it's the the outgoing and incoming calls to the building that go down not the PA system as far as I'm aare aware I've not he the PA system going no that was the issue when I okay thank you all right should we move on to Lawrence okay and Lawrence um this is in the workshop the engineering shop um uh if you were to visit the engineering shop at Lawrence you notice the equipment here there is a pretty massive Unit A ventilation unit that is used to pull up all the saw dis from the ear and

054and from the tables this sort of elaborate piping that goes throughout the room that uh you know drops down to the various tables that uh the children of s sanding wood Etc uh and uh and it it's it's original to the building so it's 1950s unit and if you turn it on the thing it's it's just it's a jet engine that goes off it is just incredibly loud so uh we need to it's not as efficient uh um so you know so one it's age is a factor U and if you don't have ventilation system this thing goes you can't operate in that W wood trop that you know sawdust is very flammable um so you you need a system in there to work all the time the students are in there um and also

055we need to the the workshop design has change so the ventilation pipes don't always meet where the tables are and uh and so they have to be refitted and redesigned to the room uh and thirdly uh there are two smaller units that are insufficient for cleaning the air separate from taking up the so so you know if you can imagine a pipe coming down onto a big which block table where the the students are sing things that saus is being pulled out by the big main Dr but the stuff that's ER aerosur that's the ver uh is uh is supposed to be removed by these other ventilation room of units and it's not those units just aren't functioning correctly they have to be a different unit to do that work and they have to be

056mounted on the ceiling and so that and complete work uh is around $110,000 to do that the major component of that is the major un that has to be replaced and I'm guessing that all these items that are listed are just down the road items is that right so generator upgrade for down the road not that's right that's right they were part of the the U the 10e plan um if you drop down to Mullen Hall in this case uh the uh if you look up on the search of Mullen Hall you see two you know large chimney structures but when you go into the attic space the chimney all the ref flashing has to be redone there's significant leakage that comes in down through the chimney um and there's copper pans uh that catch

057the water uh and it's not always successful so they have literally trash cans catching water coming out of these CH chimneys so there there's immediate work that has to be done on this these chimneys but secondly these chimneys are in in in three of the four cases are really decorative but they're massive structures on the interior of the buildings so that if you can think about like a a weird uh almost an l shaped structure there's a a large piece of these chimneys that is supported by Iron rods and Lolly columns yeah and uh and uh they are just they were their original design but they that piece of the chimney serves no purpose there is nothing going through there if you have a a massive structure that is uh you know close to 100

058years old that that what we're Beyond repairing the coer uh the uh flashing and the copper P we're looking at a designer to tell us what do we do with this structure we we just I think you were talkis uh while it's being supported uh you know it's it it's just a ton of weight in that attic and um so we want to look at Alternatives potentially removing these chimneys and keeping the decorative element on the on the roof but just taking down these massive Bri brick structures in the AOC um so uh so that 44,000 includes the flashing in uh an engine in solution to that uh moving down North Falmouth uh North fouth is the last schol that needs a new fire alarm system uh so we replace the other buildings so um

059that's the $150,000 that's what uh we have estimated uh you'll be aware that we just finished the project in moris pond for a similar amount and East salou it's a small project this was on the list last year it get moved by the town uh moved off the list by the town so this is creation of an outdoor learning space uh in the back of the building um uh you know as an extension one of the classrooms it's essentially putting down a concrete pad uh and and allowing for classroom work to be done outside um and uh the funding for that is uh you'll see thetive $225,000 last year we got approval to do the some fence but the article gets approved a November we had to go ahead and build a fence around the

060playground before that because the preschool coming into uh in September so that article has funding we couldn't expense that because it was uh to the Articles cuz the article is approved afterwards uh so that money is available so we're going to add it swapped out to do the the Pao um prob just have a question the outdoor learnings B would this replace uh is this in the current Outdoor Classroom in the courtyard of east alth or is this behind the school proper where there is an existing patio is uh it's a good question it's it's behind the uh the building uh right outside the existing classroom but right outside that classroom is really a tar pathway it's there is no patio there and all that pathway is all beaten up and unlevel and so on

061so you couldn't use it for learning so this is not replacing uh the patio that's outside of what was formerly the double classroom okay this is just like up that hill a bit that's um okay thank you thanks and there was uh and and you know there is an additional area that will be part of this out through the learning space that will be done through other funding um but our responsibilities really be great thank you any other questions on any of the building stuff and then we'll move to systems I have a question not about any of this but um this says for fiscal year 2025 but we're all talking about this November's town meeting or 2025 town meeting as it says I'm just right so for these all these articles these will be

062approved in November this November this November if they're approved by the time should it say November yeah sorry yeah should 24 thank you um it's my when I switch your fiscal years to yeah to calendar years I get all confused all right hold on one second chis had a question I just had a quick question for tea ticket I see sprinkler system but I'm assuming it's not a dire no no right at the moment that is on a capital plan but not for this year but it is one of the last that does not have in uh a Sprinkle system um which is doesn't have to have one by Co it it it's a preexisting condition so uh but it's something that we want to consider of going for so it is on the capital

063plan but not for this year U that's a you know that's a significant project cuz you have to weip so and we do try to we do try to balance this off on priorities of you know safety uh and you know the amount that we think is reasonable for for the town so um any last building questions and then do systems okay thanks okay so in the systemwide uh categories is you know we started this last year and I think it really worked out successfully and that is rather than trying to go to the town for a specific project like one floor in one building uh that would create a budget for flooring creating a budget for uh doors and and uh and so on the painting um and uh you know last year we

064got 60,000 for doors uh we had put that every year on the capital plan uh to get give you an idea we used more than $60,000 in do replacement uh we if this is approved for this November we'll use more than $60,000 in replacing doors around the district you know some of these doors are original doors they are they are really wanders gaps in these doors Etc so we're we're you know we replaced uh two major doors at well fouth we also placed another major door at Morris Pond and that Aid up $60,000 so just those uh do a single door is5 to $6,000 a double door is $4,000 so they're not inexpensive um but we're trying to do this as we go along with the different schools so we have a list of doors

065uh that we're working on um for this year if this is approved in the flooring um and likewise uh we had a project uh we quickly used up this budget um we had uh down the hallways now the work is underway as we speak from all in Hall and replacing the floors that are uh in the main hallway um there was the art room at uh at Mor Park that the floor was in really terrible shape U so that was ripped up and it's been uh replaced uh we have uh floors at uh East suth and two classrooms that were replaced we had a lot of humidity issues in One Wing that building and uh that the blue has been seeping through the tiles so and what case we uh we uh we're trying out

066a new rug system one of classrooms uh which is actually made out of old plastic bottles and the the rug systems are are used in hospitals are used in other public schools now they become a very uh uh popular uh choice so we're giving test in one of the classrooms the other classroom is just replacing the tiles as normal and uh while also trying to uh prevent the humidity from seeping through in that classroom uh so that's a e f we're also uh [Music] replacing rugs in the main offices at uh at Mullen Hall and East uh and we're doing some of the floors here remaining floors here at the Adent building uh so so that that that's well I should say the biggest component of this flooring budget was as many as you have

067seen at the Fieldhouse entrance to the um to the high school uh before was B walked too flooring was B walked became the safety issue Etc uh so that's been or is in process of being replaced under that uh the also the lobby of the uh High School by the auditorium is in the process of being replaced as well under this year's allocation the main entrance Lobby of that D of floor high school will be replaced as well as will continue work and T ticket and other schools throughout the district to use up this budget so the point of this is given an allocation like this for flooring has given us a lot of flexibility to to pick projects throughout the district that we will need a repair without having to go to the town

068and ask for multiple projects or going to the town and saying okay we're going to tackle one school at a time which you would have to essentially close down that school to do so you know we need to do these uh you know in small Parts uh across the district in any given Year all right uh painting um uh is again exterior painting this is uh stuff that would be done during the summer this is stuff that our custodians are you know you forget that the summer months are the busiest months for the custodians they're stripping all the floors doing all the internal repairs the external repairs they really can't get to so so you know the schools are in need of uh painting so this is for various painting projects across um and then

069move down to Van purchases uh this is for two Vans um they have each has about 227,000 miles so we need uh time to buy those new Vans um so that's 180,000 so that's the 1.5 million in total ask question yeah um if I heard you correctly you said that um we had $50,000 for doors but you spent 60,000 last year yeah we so where did the 10,000 come from I guess uh from the budget we we had last year we had $60,000 we spent more than that indoors and we just took it out of our maintenance budget the turf field that's on there when that was initially laid there was a so many years down the road it was expected maintenance that's what that is right like that's that if you look at the

07010year plan yeah uh it it's it's in the 10-year plan but it's a replacement of it initially there was a uh you know you start to improve that replacement value that was the original and then Tom came back and said no come to us when you okay thanks so it's it's in the far future it does it's not anything a pretty good shap um I did earlier so now I have two questions if that's okay um when you talk about doors for 60 are they exterior doors or interi okay and then my second question um when you said the pl the playgrounds for CPC funds that we're hopeful for which where are you thinking this is the Mullen Hall playground out in front the Mullen Hall other pieces that need to be replaced or okay

071thank you so this is the project management design materials 106,000 the actual construction cost would be slightly higher so this number is still in process but it's being what we hope to be by the CPC great perfect thanks thanks so much so this will come back to oh did you have another one well I think was to yeah oh okay thank you Paul um I'm I'm liking this moment this planning the the allocations um I myself as with many town meeting members since I've been here I've been here through renovations to all of these but time flies when guess when you're having a good time and I'm trying to deal with coming to the realization that time has flown by and this place these things need replacement um I'm wondering regarding paint painting are we

072still able to utilize the sheriff's department in the summertime at all um it hasn't come up uh I I'd have to check but not not recently we've been looking at you know contractors but it's it's something I can check on you thank you okay and I assume the two the two Vans are not going to be electric vans uh one one will likely be an electric van one will be a normal gas van so what we think about the electric van is to try you know we have the small van here to use for small teams to travel we're going to try one to do one of our daily runs uh for the special education uh students so and there would be a possibility that in the future we'll be more much Advanced yes yeah

073we're hoping you know there's a big job the technology that we need for mileage on that yeah we're actively trying to get thank you okay it's not a question it's a comment um we always give hats off to our custodians they're wonderful and whenever you're talking about all that labor in the summer the heat of the summer those poor guys have to work intense labor like waxing the floors and all that so just another hats off to them they're just we're lucky we have a great H all over theing glad you absolutely um so this will come back for at our next meeting and then we go to town meeting thank you uh first on the school Camp books uh you get sure thanks these are pretty straightforward uh I met with the elementary principles

074and may um and Sandy I think you probably attest to this the first change was devices have made their way to the elementary schools and are becoming sort of disruptive and an interruption um so they wanted uh something in the handbook that says devices will be put away during the school day um and that the main office phone is available the second change was just strengthening the language the schools were getting bombarded with after 3 p.m. dismissal changes and it's just it's it's chaotic for the main office um and to make sure that students are getting dismiss you know in accordance with what parents and Guardians want so that was just a change in that language under discipline in the elementary handbook the principles said that the steps are already there for the you know

075restorative practices the table would was put in I'm not sure I think it was just a couple years ago but I boxed them in a little bit in terms of um the approaches that they want to take with different infaction so the steps are already there they thought the table wasn't necessary uh and I agree I don't think it is necessary because once you start listing consequences you can be prohibited from having another possible consequence so I agree with that the high school handbook um they were getting a lot of door Dash food deliveries and so that was something that was asked we had already said delivery of flowers and balloons isn't allowed so they wanted the food deliveries um included in there and then for all handbooks just some basic changes staff names contact

076information needs to be up ated um under attendance um we wanted the the elementary principles brought to attention that they wanted something talking about tardy in Spec specifically that you know becoming tardy to school can have just as much of a consequence is not coming to school at all you can miss a significant part of the school day and then uh Lori and I talked about because chronically absence students is an issue and our you know our school district um has a high level of chronically absent students as do the vast majority of schools across the the state particularly after Co we wanted a section in there about the impact of what it means to be chronically absent um and it truly is under under state law this the desie views chronically absent as any

077absence even those that are excused and even those that are for disciplinary purposes so you know parents often ask the princip wait I had an excused um you know I had a note why am I getting an attendance letter it doesn't matter excused absences are counted in that absence count um the the elementary principles this is for all handbooks but they pointed out they wanted just an emphasis on having parents and Guardians create accounts and power school there are many that just don't and that's a a major means of communication with parents um even just looking up your child's academic progress through power school and then there's just an update in the food um cost information and then finally just adding that ride Shares are not allowed which coincides with the policy that the school

078committee just approved thank you any questions or comments on the hand starting at the last on Transportation Services there's a p missing umor for please review the school district's ride share policy um after for more information please review the school district missing and then under attendance what is the consequence for missing school you get a letter is there some is there some functional consequence and should that be listed in here you know like if you miss a certain number of days you will not rest to the next grade or no it's not really retention letters the letters were very harsh and legal E when we first started on it was like we're going to file a 51a we can bring you to court we can and we can do those things and we actually often

079do but the letters really um so the handbook doesn't state but our attendance letters explain to families uh okay now you've been X absent x amount right now we'd like to have a meeting then if it continues now you've been your child has been absent ex more number of days we are going to have another meeting but we may have to file a 51a for because there is such a thing under abuse and neglect of educational neglect and unless we know I mean we're not going to do that if we know that you know someone has a chronically ill child at home and they do have excused absences we will try to work with them though maybe to do Home Hospital tutoring or something else so there's a wide array of there's so many reasons

080why a child might be absent so every case has to be dealt with individually but there are some cases where we might file what's called a child requiring assistance it used to be the old chins petition with the juvenile court and that is when we sometimes have a parent saying I can't get them out of bed in the morning they refuse I've done everything I can at home to get my child to school and if a child is willfully refusing to attend school we get the court involved it is supportive even though parents and Guardians get I have to go to court now it is scary if there's no doubt about it but it's supposed to be a supportive measure to put other wraparound services in place for a family who can't get the child

081of the school okay I wondered because it says students will not suffer consequences from excused AB to religious observations so I just wanted to know whether we should add what the consequence was um one [Music] um oh similarly with the telephone use is there a consequence if they they get their phone taken away during class the teacher keeps it they give it back there could be there could be a lunch detention there could be you know an after school detention or parent meeting parent Guardian meeting um that does say that the parents and Guardians will get notified and I think it's again it's Case by case it might even be please have your child just keep your device at home because you know it's not it's just too disruptive during the school day and they're

082not keeping it in their backpack or they're not allowing us to keep it in the main office but it doesn't say there's any consequences if I read corly um so I'm going to go back with u can I assume that food cost if food is at breakfast and lunch is free then the charge would be if they want two of them yes so it's the cost is when buying additional food items the last sentence there except for milk which is free the cost are as follow have as much mil as they want yeah okay uh for the attendance um and this is just the notion of being absent is in the middle of people kids not being here and it would seem as if that paragraph should be at the end instead of in the

083middle I mean I it's just a stylistic thing everything's about absentee but in the middle of it it's see lateness is just as a negative impact and I was wondering if that's just in the wrong place and it should be put under first short red first yeah just as being absent you know and I just was wondering if you should be instead of being in the middle of absenteeism the lateness should be at a different place minor minor um two things the restor of practices um I think it's I I personally all in favorite but I think uh is it going to be enhancement for teacher training about this because that really needs to be really important because teachers of the W are supposed to be doing it think ongoing professional development we started that

084several years ago I'm sorry excuse me we started the professional development um with all staff across the district um with C Spades uh several years ago and then we have been uh continuing that um and then uh next year we actually have um some additional trainings and some additional um like tier two a restorative practice trainings that we're going to start to enhance that okay and one last one under communication and and you mentioned that that this is not being done the um creating an account in Public School parent um directions for creating accounts I guess I'm wondering about that because I would assume that some parents are having difficulties doing that and I'm wondering what kind of um directions or or what kind of assistances the directions are actually very clear and then I

085know that principal secretaries are constantly reaching out and walking parents and Marans through the process okay thank you thanks oh oh there was one go one more I was thinking under attendance um you have uh students may not be absent from school for seven seven or more full day sessions or 14 14 half day sessions with any period of 6 months should you have six in parentheses as well good point good call all right thank you any last questions on H and one last one yeah if if a parent gives a name of someone and I I know have this policy about no R sh supposed the name it's given is the Uber driver that's okay and we even said that it has to be an authorized person so um so it can be Uber

086yes as long as it's an authorized emergency contact of the student I think Lori even gave the example she saw an Uber driver at one of the elementary schools and it was an authorized grandparent who was picking up the grandchild so it have to be authorized yes can't just be you know John Smith is going to pick up my kid well it could be I mean there's a whole section that parents have to fill out Emer Emer at least three I think emergency contacts so that could be that person it could be you know a neighbor it doesn't have to be a relative it could be any but it would already have to be no thank you okay thank you so much this will come back um at our next meeting for um approval um

087moving on to acting on sub committee appointments and assignments um I skip oh yes I did sorry on revised policy EBC emergency plans so this is just we've always had this policy emergency PL it was called and there's been a law in place since in Massachusetts in since 2012 that has required school districts to have emergency response plans just recently there was a law pass that wants school districts requires school districts to have so let me back up the emergency response plans that we were previously required to have are just addressed medical emergencies the state has now is requiring us to have response plans that address both medical and Behavioral Health emergencies which makes sense so the changes to the current policy just align with the new statute and basically just say we will have

088plans in place that address not just Medical but also Behavioral Health emergencies that's it any questions about that all right thank you now we're moving on to acting on the sub commmittee of Ms and assignments um as everyone has a copy of it as you saw um we are trying to reduce the number of assignments this year so last year some people had five and six now we're down to um almost everyone having three a couple people have four um hopefully that'll make it easier to make it to all of them is there a motion to approve the subcomittee assignment I'll make that motion thank youer a second thanks uh any comments questions discussion all right well I just have a concern having been on committees when there were two people sometimes the other person

089was on P so might there be a backup person or something so that if someone cannot come um having only one person yeah and I I understand I mean I'm hoping that with less assignments it's going to make it easier for people to make to make it to all of them and then we're also going to this year um take the extra step of having the the lead for each assignment reach out to all the members and make sure that the times are set one that is actually doable for everyone um but I think instead of having something formal if you know you're not going to make it to something just reach out to another reach you can reach out to me and I'll fill in because we're not at the position that we used

090to be where we would have a quum so if you know you're not going to be there you know reach out to me or someone else that you know might be willing to do it and we'll we'll try it that way and if it doesn't work we'll go back to doing it a different way yes because these meetings go on without us I mean we're just Lea on yes exactly you know some of them they have two like the subcommittees you need a corn but right yeah not they'll go on and we could read their minutes or whatever yeah we shouldn't be voting the aison are not voting numbers anyways really just I I was particularly looking at the Dei committee because maybe I'm a little slower than most people so it took me a

091long time to figure out all the moving Parts it took me a few months to be at those meetings and so for a new person just for jum into that I thought that was um if we have a priority I thought that was a concern um well you're certainly welcome to still go I'm sure I'm sure Henry would love it Kelly I'd like to be added to student advisory I um was sort of thinking about it uh when I saw the email come out and like to be added to that one that one only had two so that works that's great thanks student student inv okay that was good that was the short um when do we find out when these movings happen not the subs excuse me but the like you know for myself

092when do I find out when teach for learning is happening is that something that's posted and I look for um we'll make sure that everybody gets the information it's on my list I want to have a nice list of when all the meetings are so that other people can attend as well but it won't be meeting in the summer so for a little bit uh okay um all in favor of approving the subcommittee list with the one edit say oh wait we can't we got a roll call sorry it's roll call uh Terry yes Sue yes krina yes Mar uh Glenda hi yes hi yes Chris yes Melissa thank so much okay next up is acting on the school committee calendar the one that's at the seat has one change um Terry pointed out that

093we were really short on meetings in uh the fall because of a holiday scheduling so we added a meeting on November 5th we're still on an every other week's schedule though so hopefully it won't be too much of a burden um oh a motion to approve the thanks Margaret the second second thank you and could I add that this equals the amount of meetings we have this year yes it's not an additional it's not an additional somehow it got lost in cyers space or something um when a holiday falls a meeting so yeah thanks for pointing that out we figured out a way to do uh roll call vote I mean last questions great Terry yes yes K Margaret thank you slenda yes also yes next up update on the budget Paul I'll would be

094real quick I promise I know we want to meet the chef just uh just quickly same position we were in last very shape going into the end of this year uh one big note that you'll see at the bottom total n salaries 300,000 that's before the transfers we're making this month to special education reserve the end into the uh circuit breaker account so that more POS uh it is right the moment uh but the July 9th meeting will be going over year end results um so I really I think given so many moving parts that take place in June at the end of the year that's a moreful July will be a more useful conversation yeah but we're in good sh thank you Sor superintendent update all right I have a list I'm going to

095try to go through quickly because I do want to make sure we introduce the chef um so bear with me I just want to start uh just to mention uh graduation was just so beautiful um and it was the 50th year um our students uh wore uh White Souls that had the um 1974 to the 202 Ford um dates uh since they were the 50th um class at thouth high school and members of the 1974 um class the first class at the high school uh were in attendance quite a few of them and really enjoyed this ceremony so so it was a special event um the Wounded Warriors that we uh every year I just wanted to mention that um uh the admin team uh was at the start uh as we have in uh

096many years past and then we have all along The Shining uh SE Bike Path U students from our schools that uh line up and and cheer and wave and uh and then uh as always our elementary students um make cards for all our letters that um that are there so it's a really nice event uh we had our Max sa uh and family for uh the bright spots and area improvements were shared in five different areas um and the participants um through a series of activities the participants actually made recommendations of where they think that we should begin um next year um just so that we are continuing to to make steps that all of our kids belong um composting I know I've talked a a lot this year we did get up to all

097seven schools um up and running so we're very excited about that and we'll be hitting U the school year next year um running again at full capacity um all the field days were uh very successful I mean lots of fun um students participated in lots of uh games and a couple schools even had um adult inflatable races oh my gosh they were so funny the kids just loved it though it was so um CTE as I've mentioned several times that we've starting the two new um programs of medical assisting and Aviation mechanical technology uh we have six students signed up uh for each program to start next year so we're very excited um for a brand new program and and students um interested so we're we're happy about that uh juneth the school celebration uh

098once again happened um during the Arts live event it was on a Saturday uh it was June 15th um this year but um Laur students participated uh in a celebration and we had the wapella uh group that sign so very nice uh Special Olympics uh unfortunately in the capewide uh Special Olympics was ranged out and I just have to say our amazing CA Melissa Vera and PE teacher uh Susan Fishback at north bouth um pulled together a Special Olympics here here uh districtwide uh at North p with the field in the back and it was just a beautiful day lots of fun activities um for the students and so we didn't miss out on it and it really hats off to to both of them for uh putting together and lots of other people across

099the district jumping in and helping out so that was um really nice uh son you want to give a real brief update where we are on the uh Cap bird um trip sure um so Henry and I had an opportunity to to visit Bridgewater State yesterday and meet with um there are 10 uh people studying from cefer with the Pedro Pierce Institute which is the institute at Bridgewater so we went and met with them which is helping us also in part shape our experience we've also recently had a planning meeting with Z viea who's our contact uh the director of our sister School in cber and so we've begun to develop our itinerary which is going to include uh some professional development and exchanging practices with each other uh visiting working with the students and

100then running through um an abbreviated mock itinerary for what students would be able to do on a separate trip in the future really acclimating us to um the country to uh the culture and then also experiencing the university and the dorms and things where the students have a chance to stay and um working on building out the people that we're going to be visiting so we're working through the itinerary and at the same time also working to book our our travel so we're forunate to be building a team to go um with Terry and Margaret uh Henry myself um Ellen H from ff of representing the FF board and um we have four teachers all of whom have been working with [Music] their you didn't know they didn't know but I wanted to surpr know

101we didn't know did you know I got an email from Henry asking me about the dat so that's I did know because H sent me an email would I be if you checked your email I'm sure you sent you one too when this afternoon just before I got here Henry okay so excited hope we did so will be join by uh also for the four teachers whose classes have been interacting and then also U Rebecca Vieira as our principal represent so um we have a team that's coming together and yes Henry's working to try and make sure everybody is conflict free on those dates because Bridgewater is um being our amaz on to putting all our travel arrangements and accommodations together so that um it's one systematic piece instead of us try to manage all

102the the different moving parts and then maybe maybe we'll ask Paul to drop us off the electric fan but it's it's taking shape and uh so all the all the parts are happening and uh hopefully we'll have more concrete itinerary to share um soon enough awesome thank you and uh I want to talk about um very special person that has um for many years uh uh created projects with students around autism awareness and so K men um she was a parent for many years at T ticket and the last two years she's been uh she's a parent at mors Pond uh I want to um share um so this is the um tea ticket um project this year I'm going to let Sandy you want to share the Little instance sure so this is currently

103in the the front lobby so um Karen has um spent hours upon hours for the past six plus years um helping all of the students and staff create a group project and it's always a surprise so she kind of gives us a little details about what everybody's going to do and then at the end you know she displays the culmination of the effort so it's really hard to see but on the left those are little clo pin dolls oh so she provided all of the staff and students with all of the materials so you could have your unique doll so the the purpose of the activ is to um highlight everyone's uniqueness and celebrate individuality and so everybody get to create their own doll and choose the the fabric or material to make the clothing

104and um some yarn for the hair and then you could add little acement if you wanted to things that were special about you and then on the right side are the um ribbons and on the ribbons she had asked everyone to write something that's special about yourself or a positive attribute that you have and then something that you admire about people that are neurodiverse something special about them so um so it's pretty it's pretty special and it's really um it's been a great opportunity for the students to really focus on the individuality and celebrate differences um so also um so this is the uh one that uh these are all ribbons a similar type of activity um working with the students reading a book at Mor ponds and um and talking about the the individual

105differences and um so these are ribbons that the students um created to to make this um project so um so yeah it really it really is so just again we're so so happy that that um Ken continues to do this each year and I passed out a article um that Sarah Murphy uh wrote about this the project so that you have that as well all right and just a couple more things if you hang in here with me um so I want to talk about our Clipper connections um so this is a beautiful project as I'm talking I'm going to pass this around I'll start start with Melissa here and you can look through it so the Clipper connections there are 15 students uh at Lawrence and 15 students at at Mullen Hall and um

106all are part of the El uh program and they have uh the Lawrence students have walked to Mullen Hall Molen Hall students have walked to Lawrence they have uh worked on several projects like um bird feeders um a number of things um throughout the year they've had lunch together uh so just uh just really making those connections that we talk about are so important uh and then this project um about the Clipper as you will see they uh together learn about what the c means the L means the I and so forth throughout the Clipper and created um their pictures um when you see uh around the r it was um the ch um sidewalk chalk and so it's just a beautiful book that I just want to share with you um but it's about

107the connections and and the students um just one little note about the the student from Lawrence that did the front cover um we were having um trouble having getting the student to school uh multiple absences and uh through this project she started coming to school more and was so proud to be able to do that cover so we really try in all kind of ways to try to connect with students and find ways to engage them in school we'll keep it up and then um and sadly um school year does come to an end and we had to send our students home although they were wearing a lot of smiles as they were uh getting on those buses but very sad for all of us that were out waiting W the students um goodbye so

108um so end of another school year thank any questions forward um I was thinking about graduation and I don't want to um keep everyone uh because I know that we have very important um exciting opportunity to happen in just a few moments but um as a healthcare professional I recognized that graduation was painfully hot for some folks and I actually had asked if there was going to be a tent or a something so since then I've sort of been thinking it's not fair to just um you know recognize that it was super hot for some folks and um some folks didn't do very well so how what's the what's my thought for a solution so we can't very well cover our day entire field and I don't think that uh that's the intent when we

109uh may be agree with to go outside but I was thinking if Rome could cover the C the Coliseum how what can we do today and um I think a lot of people including our personally at our house we have a sale off our back uh the back of our house so perhaps we could look into some sort of sale um over the bleachers or at least the section um just I'm thinking about it because you mentioned graduation it's still fresh in my mind obviously plenty of time but um just always looking to how we can make it so all of our families can come or at least make it a little more easier thank you any has questions all right we'll move on to routine business is there motion to approve the minutes from

110May 28 2024 make a motion Mo has got that one and that's your second thank you any edits or can great roll call Terry yes s krina Margaret say yes than yes yes yes you so much uh committee reports anyone Margaret two reports one was commit on June 6 and we did the evaluation of the fly and finalized it um what I think was really interesting was the year before uh all of the three levels of Wellness were separated and never integrated and it really is integrated this year in the flyer and I believe the flyer is going on the web page correct yes we are that's summer project openag is what we stand for um and they will be including policies procedure documents and flyers learning access report is going to be a little

111bit longer um learning access because there is not a Welcome Center what they've done is begun to put protocols in place for the welcome center so that that happen um and um one of the things is the I speak cards which we can pass around so people can see um um let's see multiable Clippers I speak UN list of who to contact this going to provide list of who to contact in the community in the district there's going to be a welcome protocol uh people will get an email in the beginning of the year they'll also we also going to focus on students who are at level or advanced level because uh sometimes I think publicly and it's very important to spend a lot of time talking about special Le students making sure everyone has

112access I think sometimes family is a little concerned about what my child is advanced in what are you're doing here so that's an important part of it um em will be growing out the beginning of the school year um accelerated learning U for students professional development um yeah this professional elment for um every year teachers have have to renew their license it's paid for by title three and uh Chris is uh developing it correctly um it includes equity and diversion uh in the world in the worldness protocol okay the committee will no longer exist and the material for the committee will be moved in part the outpath the equity audit and to um um professional Lear for teachers and obviously the EI a lot I'm trying to I Tred to rush so that I would

113not I know there's something very important going to happen I want to get that thank you um is it Sue or Terry who had a committee report Terry mine isn't really a committee report it's just um I just want to take a moment of remembrance for um Deborah wner who passed away um two weeks ago she was at least 25 years at the high school in different settings one of them was in the Student Activities and she touched so many students um and bth was lucky to have her as an employee um and many of us here were lucky to have her as a friend so just to mention her name and thank [Music] you un I much rather you do okay um we negotiations met again yesterday um things seem to be going on

114track rather smoothly um um and I guess that's all I can speak to that I know right that's all you can say a good meeting yeah it was great thank you any requests for information all right great meet the shf yay I'll turn it over I am so excited um that we've come to this U moment U we have hired a wonderful uh Chef um so Chef Laura Higgins w um the chair here great thank you for being here today um so I I could kind of run down lots of things that I know about you but that we'd like to hear from you about yourself one yes um so I'm from fouth I graduated in 2014 with Tim um and actually just touch you on Miss Warner I ate lunch in her office every

115day um when I was in the high school um but yeah so I have been in Food Service my whole life um started at monus Cafe when I was of working age and um continued to find my way into kitchens um and moved out to California to go the colon Institute of America um after graduating from Bridgewater State College with operations management degree um so that I GR graduated uh from the colon Institute of America in Napa Valley California in 2011 and continued my studies in the kitchens um traveling globally went to South Africa Spain France um and also stayed a while in California in that part of the Farmland Farm to Table Alice Waters movement um and then also had the opportunity to go to Chicago and work as a susha in a kitchen

116there um with the like grit of the city so that was a really cool opportunity um and always knowing that I wanted to come back to F and bring my knowledge and um enrich the community with this love of food that I've had and when I read this article about the chef opportunity I lit like I was like melting and tearing up because it's something that called to me and it's everything I've ever done I felt came to this like Crux or you know to this culmination of like how I could come back to my community and impact it in such an amazing and like powerful way um and I have a daughter who's going to now be in third grade at East Elementary so I have this like allseeing eye I have you know

117the students telling me what food is good and what's bad and I have parents telling me friends um and then I also work currently at kesic Farm as the at the Buffalo Jump so I'm the chef owner there I run the Jamaican nights now with the help of Raymond who's been there for years um and I worked alongside his wife m in the kitchen so I've gotten those recipes under my wing and we start we pick that off tomorrow actually um good yes thank you and then we also do catering events and I do lunch Service as well so I'm very excited to take all my knowledge and slowly integrate it into the food service in the found public schools and get to know all the staff um I had the opportunity last week to

118go into all seven School kitchens and meet everyone and I feel like I'm looking at myself I know that's like but I'm a cook I don't like to say like I'm a chef or anything like I'm in there and I'm food is like my language I've said this before like it's how I this is not my way to talk to people I talk to people through food and um I can see that you know those women and that man like they that's what they do and that's what their love of um and that's how it translates and I'm excited to be able to work and collaborate with them to like enrich the food experience for students and like also create a good foundation in nutrition for them to go into the classroom and be able

119to learn better and Excel and also from the parent perspective to and I started thinking about this I'm like yes it's amazing that we'll have this opportunity to give the kids but then knowing as a parent the stress that it can be to make school lunch every morning and figure that out for the week on you know Sunday or Saturday all right we need a shop if we can create that like positive net wave of energy in the households and affects like that many that's really exciting and like an amazing thought so I'm very excited very excited where this go question no it's not the best part is a kid love it love it yeah I'm very excited and I do have some snacks outside for everyone to enjoy we're excited for you to speak

120to us in in your in your language conversation um so with that um we're going to recess and we will not be coming back to open meeting because we're going to move directly into open and to Executive session after that so I guess we sign off we don't usually recess it's [Music] unusual no not anything we're move we'll finish the recess then we'll move into executive session then
