here we go good evening everyone and welcome to the school committee of November 2nd 2022 I'd like to call this meeting to order and first thing on our agenda is to approve the agenda any comments suggestions or changes hearing none we will move along uh let's see what's the next thing on our agenda hold on uh next thing on our agenda is superintendent's update uh turn it over to Acting Superintendent Janice Sheehan thank you chair Rosemary Aaron thank you as always we ask families to check the superintendent's blog and the individual school calendars for upcoming events but um just to highlight some of our events and talk about some past events first the annual Monster Dash last Sunday was a huge success with more than a thousand adults and children signing up to run a

walk this event is organized and sponsored by the Milton foundation for education and we want to thank our families for their support for this event and we also of course thank the MFE for their fundraising and their continued support of our schools this week Milton Educators participated in some very engaging professional development experiences this was on Tuesday November 1st topics for professional growth on that day included Universal Design for Learning com classroom data analysis and trauma-sensitive classrooms we are looking forward to welcoming parents and Guardians to an informative school committee Forum on November 9th at 7 pm at the Council on Aging and the topic the discussion is personalized learning we hope parents and Guardians will join us to hear personalized learning experts Cindy taymor as well as Milton Educators who will be available to

answer questions after the Forum on November 9th let's see our next school committee meeting will be on November 16th and uh if families have not already done so make sure to get your tickets to the Milton High School presentation of Beauty and the Beast on November 10th 12th and 13th we have a link on the main page of our Milton Public School website for more details on times and purchasing tickets and please finally be reminded to sign up for the annual Cardinal Cushing 5K run it's a run and walk to be held on Saturday November 19th at the Cunningham school the race starts at 9 00 a.m please see our website for more information thank you next we would like to introduce our Tucker Elementary School site Council they are going to present tonight on

their school Improvement plan I would like to introduce principal cat deroche and she will introduce members of her site Council who are with us tonight principal deroche if Milton Access TV could make me co-host I could admit them from the attendee pool or I can't get them in at the moment Mr bablichek you've been upgraded thank you Dr palacek thank you I think superintendent Sheehan I see that our site council is being admitted now um so thank you for letting us come to this school committee meeting to share all of the good work we're doing so far and some plans that we have to go forward um before I begin and introduce some members of our School site Council I wanted to take a moment and just thank the entire Milton Community and in particular

the Tepper Community when Dr Elaine McNeil gurmeye decided to take her year leave I think we all were very disappointed um such a member of our community making a huge impact and very hard shoes to fill but I have been welcomed with warmth and with encouragement and excitement and I couldn't be happier to be leading this great community of families students and staff so I wanted to start with that um so first I want to introduce assistant principal and curriculum coordinator Kirsten Driscoll we also are joined by um Justine Novak who's a grade five teacher at Tucker brother Dennis Slaughter who's our community member representative miss Emily Speck who is a parent in our community of a fifth grade student and had a son that went through Tucker elementary as well we may be joined

by Latifah Frank later but um she wasn't sure that she'd be able to make it so thank you all for being here we're going to go through some slides that we've shared previously and will be available to answer any questions so I'm not sure who's coordinating the slides but I can just kind of get started in talking about what you're about to see um unless someone needs help do you want me to share my screen um or I'm under Dr pavlichek do you have the um presentation by any chance I hate to put you on the spot actually I don't if uh might be easier if captures the screen I can probably find it and bring it up or Garth has it want me to share it and that way I can tell you guys

is already on it there you go great thank you guys one more one more comment our school committee rep from the high school is a participant right now um she should be elevated her name is Julia Mangum she has been thank you former Tucker tiger I might add okay all right so that is our beautiful School building um and the next slide will show the members of our school committee the ones I've introduced we're only missing a few um Latifah Frank as I mentioned is a parent of two fourth graders this year get to add on more years to these kiddos um Lisa Gilbert Smith has two students one in second grade one in third grade and veronique vendett who is unable to join us is one of our teachers in third grade and she

teaches in the French immersion program okay so as you may or may not know Dr Elaine McNeil grimai um former principal used to identify a theme for each Academic Year in keeping with this well-lived tradition this year's theme is connections the on the nose reason has to do with the last three years of interrupted learning and living but the deeper way we are looking at this theme as a faculty and Community is to really examine the importance and role that connection has in the school we know we all know that relationships with students families each other and the content is really important and examining and reflecting on how we can make these the most make the most of these connections is how we feel we will see the most academic and social emotional growth as

a school each faculty meeting we use time together to really Center our work around connections whether it's with our students with our families with the content or with each other so you'll see that as a working theme as we go through these slides I'm going to hand it over to Kirsten hi everybody good night um I'm Kirsten Driscoll I'm the assistant principal and curriculum coordinator at Tucker and I've actually just started my journey as a Milton parent with a kindergartner who just began at Tucker school so I feel really lucky to now be a parent of Tucker as well do you mind flipping to the next slide thanks so I will apologize oh it looks like it was fixed great um I thought that the math was wrong here I did this on entire day

but it has been corrected so great um so this is kind of who we are as a Tucker School so as you can see the Sierra Tucker we have 459 students so we are a pre-k through five school as you know we house a full day preschool program um and a half day integrated preschool program um we pride ourselves on our diversity our community and our achievement and we're really a collaborative Community who work really hard to remove barriers to Student Success so we are the smallest Elementary School in Milton but like you've heard in many of these presentations we are growing rapidly I actually can't believe that we have 459 students here when I started at Tucker um the number was nowhere near that so we are growing fast um in most of our

grade levels you'll see that we have one strand of French immersion and two strands of the English Innovation pathway for most of our classes in one through five this year we actually have two strands of a French immersion in third grade and two strands of the English Innovation pathway so that's only in our third grade um but if you come visit Tucker which I hope that all of you will do you will see like you've heard in all these other presentations that we are busting at the seams and using every single space in our school building flip the slide please so tonight we are not exactly going to walk you through our school Improvement plan because our Improvement plan is still under development um that will be a major point of work for our site

Council going forward this year however we will um use our district strategic plan which is really a shared Vision we have as a district um to walk you through the themes of personalized learning safe and supportive schools and equity in learning and as you can see from this infographic those three themes really overlap um and for the purpose of this presentation we're not going to go through every single example but rather a major Focus area um for these three major themes at Tucker school so we're going to talk to you now about how we've been connecting with personalized learning at Tucker and I'll turn it back over to Kat thanks Kirsten so as we think about connecting with personalized learning and I know that there's a a forum that's going to be happening soon and

I would encourage everyone to to go there I think and hear from Dr Cindy taymor she really we've had the chance to go to Melrose as a group of adult Learners through this process and what she's done in that District continues to live on in a really um deep way with student learning and so she'll have a lot she has had a lot to share with us and will with the family community as well um so the way that we're really seeing personalized learning continue to come to life at Tucker School are in the following ways um peer observation Cycles so obviously this looked different during covid um but we had started years ago a peer observation cycle and we're we're bringing that back into practice and is something that we're looking to grow this

Academic Year um really allowing teachers to not only go and see colleagues but to volunteer their class and to really make an open door policy as to when they're teaching certain things that they feel really either really great about or they want some feedback on and so we've started that process and we'll continue to grow that throughout the year dedicating common planning and PD time um to really break down what we're seeing what's challenging what's working and what's needed um we also our our dedicating common planning time to build capacity around data use and focus not just collecting charts and graphs but really thinking about what that means for student learning and how to Leverage The Curriculum that we are implementing in a tier one capacity and what that looks like in a tier two

capacity um we are utilizing student playlists and choice boards in classrooms again we're we're at the beginning of this process and we're trying to grow that through some of these systematic um these systems that we're trying to put into place really working um with teachers around how to make this sustainable which can often be you know the the challenge with some of these um these practices um we are also identifying ways to incorporate personalized learning into the new curricula that we're adopting through our math and social studies and even in the curricula we've already had with reach for reading and the Foss science system one thing that's really we're feeling is really going to leverage this into um an internalized practice for students not only staff is to have student-owned Data Tracking and what we're

what we mean by that is to really help students to build the skills to identify a goal based on an assessment they took how they feel about a certain content area identify a specific goal create an action plan and then monitor that progress in a student-centered way so not just not the way an adult would do it but they might fill out a reflection sheet or notice that you know they they mastered a certain standard or they're not quite there yet and what they need to do to get there um Justine I would ask for you to share just a little bit about what you're doing in your classroom um that connects with this idea of personalized learning if you would yes absolutely um well thank you for having me on today and I'm really

excited tomorrow actually I'm going to be rolling out exactly what Kat had mentioned um my students are each going to get a folder and in the folder they're going to have formal and informal assessments that they have taken and we are going to look at that together and we're going to talk about what it means and then they are going to make some goals um in language arts based on the data that is in their folder and in addition in science I find that science is a really great time to have um group work where there is some creativity they get to move their body and they get to do something different um and so the first term at Tucker the fifth graders are studying Earth and the Sun and we had a focused question

in one of our investigations that was what causes day and night and so while we were doing this investigation I decided that instead of a formal assessment I was going to have the students create their own um their own way that they were going to explain what happened between what what causes day and night excuse me and so the standard for Massachusetts says that they need to communicate this pattern and so I had the students interpret what they want what communicate meant to them so I put them in positive working groups they had groups of three and within that group I told them two things one you had to be creative two you had to be able to communicate in your own way what causes day and night and so we had about three days

for students to work on this they were 100 engaged on the third day actually um Kat and Kirsten came in and um observed our student presentations and I am so thrilled to say that not there wasn't one that was the same we had one that was a clay model with a flashlight to explain what causes day and night we had a comic we had a skit we had different types of posters and we had different types of Google Slides so one takeaway that I I had from that experience teaching it and watching the students is engagement is that when you use personalized learning the students are 100 engaged with their own work and making sure that they are meeting the standard um that they are working on thank you Christine it really helps to put

in context when you hear from what's happening with the students and after watching those presentations it was really clear that the engagement was up um completely next slide please these are some pictures um of the bottom left shows what uh Justine was talking about the students used a flashlight and a clay model and they demonstrated um day and night and how the Earth is relational to the Sun and what that means for the rotation on the axes and all of that um you'll see upper upper left is our our youngest Learners um really working together in our pre-school classroom in our integrated half day over to the right at the top right that's our third graders exploring area and perimeter they were tasked with um designing their own way to demonstrate area and perimeter and

they were given a variety of tools and could demonstrate however they wanted to their understanding of the difference and the definition of each and then the lower right are our first grade friends um and they were working with math as well and I will hand it back over to Kirsten um so connecting with safe and supportive schools has really been something that's been at the Forefront of our work at Tucker for years now so we created a teacher leadership team many years ago um and this was really their focus because we always were rooted in understanding that if our kids um are looking forward to coming to school and happy to coming to school and have the things that they need to be prepared and ready to come to school and enjoy learning um it

would make learning more successful for them so our teacher leadership team years ago they created their own um surveys that they we uh handed out to all students to kind of get a gauge on how they were feeling at Tucker school if they had an adult that they trusted in the building kind of their preferences for their learning style and things like that so we've been doing this work for a bit now and I'm happy to now say that we have um a district survey that we are pushing out currently in teluspark that's helping us kind of continue that work of creating safe and supportive schools for our students and that survey is really helpful for us when we are working in our behavioral health support team and our student support team to kind of

identify areas and places and students that we need to focus on and provide supports to so that's just something that we've really been working on as a school and something that we're pushing out currently in the next week to kind of help us focus our work around safe and supportive schools we're also implementing calm classroom training and we have identified SEL leads at each of the schools who are currently taking the com classroom training and the hope is that they will get that training and they can then kind of push that out um to our schools individually so they've been involved in that over the past few PD days both on the late start last Friday and even yesterday they were involved in some of that work we had an amazing professional development experience yesterday

around trauma-informed practices and what was great is that the presenter really gave strategies for teachers that they could put into place today in their classrooms um so it just really felt like it was something that our teachers could learn yesterday and today go into their classrooms and really feel like they had strategies um to meet the needs of all the kids in front of them I'm going to come back to community outreach because I will turn it to brother Dennis Slaughter to kind of give us a little bit more on that but another way that we're really working to create safe and supportive schools is through our positive behavior interventions and systems so we work hard at Tucker school to have four guiding principles which are be safe be respectful be responsible and be good

friends and when we see our Tucker Tigers exhibiting those guiding principles we hand out orange tiger tickets and each of those earn your class a stripe on a tiger and when you get that filled in it's a reward for your class whether it's like partner read with another class A Buddy read day bring in a stuffed animal a pajama day or an extra recess so it's just another way for us to kind of encourage students to be meeting those guiding principles but also get excited about you know their accomplishments in school we use the Second Step curriculum for our social emotional learning curriculum in Milton and this year we've really tailored our morning announcements to focus on those Second Step themes so that our students are hearing that common language um from Mr OSH when

she makes those announcements in the morning in their classrooms that way our recess staff um our lunch staff our Specialists they all also can hear that language and we can be using it everywhere we're really working hard to create those enrichment opportunities so this fall we've offered gardening club yoga mindfulness running club box um we've partnered with a parent who is doing a program called growing young minds and we've really looked at those enrichment sign ups to identify which students have signed up are there other students that we think would benefit from any of those enrichment opportunities um could we reach out to those families are there ways that we could get them connected to either another adult in the building other students in the building other ways for them to kind of explore opportunities

and things that are interesting to them outside of the school day we also have a Tucker cares program and that's run through our PTO and it's a way for our students to really partner with the community community in a meaningful way so it's usually some sort of community service that gives back to Milton and on the half day on November 17th we will have students staying behind at school that day to work in our cafeteria to make pies for the Milton food pantry for Thanksgiving so it's just a Hands-On way for our students to really see how their efforts can give back to Milton we use our grade 5 team as our grade five students rather many opportunities for them to show leadership throughout the school so they have a lot of extracurriculars like Ace

which is an art enrichment program we get them involved with band strings we have a fifth grade book club and a safety patrol to really give them that feeling of leadership and use their kind of knowledge as the oldest at Tucker school to give back to our Tucker community and just another way that we're really working to create safe and supportive schools is partnering very closely with Adina Schechter who's our restorative justice coach so she has been wonderful in providing PD to many of our teachers but she also is working very closely in our school to model and show what restorative justice circles look like in classrooms particularly in our fourth grade this year to help our students understand how they can come together as a community to work through harmful or difficult events with

each other in a constructive way so she's really helping them kind of uh work through those struggles together and teach them ways to do that um in meaningful ways but also modeling that for our teachers so they can continue their work that work in their classrooms as well so I'll have you turn to the next slide which just shows some pictures um of our enrichment clubs in action that's our running club down there at Kelly field where they stopped after one of their running sessions up in the top left are our Milton High School uh volunteers on that day of service and I think the fact that we had so many high school seniors come back to Tucker really does exemplify that we are creating a safe and supportive environment where many of our students

are asking to come back and volunteer and even from that experience we had many of them say like we will come back and we'll help during your enrichment clubs if you ever need that so we're kind of tapping into that we have a student here who's holding up um like a good news note from their teachers he got to do a lap around the school kind of like to brag about his great work and just another way that we're really building our students up and making them feel success in our building and then that's Madame vendett down there in the bottom left corner and she invited her students to come with her to Ponca POG um on a Sunday morning because they were learning about carnivorous plants in their science unit and she knew there

were carnivorous plants at Ponca POG and students could see those in real time so she spent time on her weekend inviting the whole class and that really does show what our Tucker teachers do which is try to make meaningful connections to our students I can't say enough about how wonderful the Tucker teaching team is and how much they go beyond the school day to help provide these opportunities for our students to always feel safe supported and welcome here you see it from when you pull up in our car line just like the amazing greeting that students get in the morning it really is a wonderful environment to walk into so I'm grateful to them so I'll go back to kind of community outreach because we really want to make sure too that our our community

feels and our students and our families feel like they understand all the opportunities available to them so we partner really closely with Milton Youth Sports um we'll be bringing back our Tucker Basketball League this year which is great and we try to provide lots of opportunities for our families to know all the things that they can sign up for in the town whether that's through um Youth Sports whether it's through group lessons with Rebecca Damiano which we've had for our students to participate in those and we're now really trying to partner with the parkway Methodist church across the street which Dr McNeil Gourmet really had a close relationship with and we're really lucky that um brother Dennis Slaughter has decided to serve as our community member on our site Council this year to really help

us partner with them particularly when we think about particularly sorry when we think about our space issues um and as we will talk about and everyone knows a little bit we're lacking outdoor space at Tucker just given its geographical location um so being able to have that space across the parkway as a usable space for us is great um so brother Dennis Slaughter I'm gonna turn it over to you if you could kind of talk about some of the ways that we plan to partner with you all um this year absolutely thank you very much uh for that uh introduction uh I'd like to start out with the real estate adage of location location location because we are so delighted to be located across the street from Tucker school and the three projects that we're

looking at right now are of course the outdoor space we do have some space that we are currently getting ready um and that space will be used to for for gardening and we're going to be building some raised beds and so forth and make it an outdoor classroom basically so that students are able to come over and do gardening and that should really uh be an exciting project uh the next one is we're looking at uh being pen pals to a grade uh where we will have members who will actually do can you believe it writing and they we will be writing and expecting the students to write back to us so that is uh something else that we're looking forward to and gearing up for and finally because uh some of you may know

that I am uh the minister of Music at the church and uh as a musician I do quite a bit with young people and music and we're looking to see if we can't do something with music uh working already there is a music team at Tucker but some of the things that I might be able to bring we're going to be looking to do specifically as we look at various diverse music from across the world and we are excited about the possibility of all of that coming together so while the partnership is still developing we just want you to know that it is indeed developing so uh once again we just say location look location location and we're just very lucky to be across the street from the Tucker school thank you thank you Father

Dennis that is well said um and we look forward to these partnership opportunities and thank the church for you know availing us of these spaces and important work all right next slide please so as we think about the third um piece of the Strategic plan and how we connect with equity and learning we think about data as we do in all of these um all of these themes and using a variety of Assessments and data students are grouped using a similar metric and are able we're able to measure growth using those assessments and student groups remain Dynamic and change based on instruction and assessment so data really is a huge leverage point in when we talk about equity and making sure that we're looking at where the needs are and not where we we think

they are um accessibility so curriculum really provides us with a lot of accessibility and selecting and implementing new curricula over content areas we ensure that students are all receiving high quality standards aligned curricula and that is in and of itself a huge hugely Equitable practice giving all students that opportunity is not only Equitable but also our responsibility as Educators for all students diverse reads book club so we partner with Glover school to bring diverse authors into our schools and also to expose students to diverse authors from a variety of backgrounds most recently we had Raul III come and visit us and do a whole school assembly he talked about his um his process as a writer his background and how that impacts his writing he talked about his time growing up in Texas and even

did an on-demand illustration for us in front of the students and it was really great our grade five book club meets on Fridays with Mrs Driscoll and I and we're reading growing pains and it's about sort of the trials and tribulations of growing up and friend group shifts and things like that and we need to talk about what that's like and how students connect with that we'll be meeting virtually with that author on November 17th and the kids are really excited about that Family Outreach liaison so this is something that Tucker has done now for a couple of years it was born out of the pandemic however it has a lot of benefit no matter what type of learning delivery where we're using but the this the whole idea behind a Family Outreach liaison um

and this isn't uh Marty McKenna who is amazing this is more based around curriculum and grade level expectations we have um staff members who are designated K to two and then three to five and what they do is they try to bridge the the Gap that can often exist between the curriculum that's being used in school and family is understanding of what that looks like um we've all seen those jokes and and heard the you know new math or new curriculum or things like that and it's really just new ways of presenting um traditional or or long-standing practices of of standards and so I think this has really helped um to support families and supporting their students at home when that sometimes feels daunting s'mores newsletters you probably are all very familiar with this as

a district we are using s'mores newsletters to consistently share information and so you know something we think about when we think about Equity is access and knowing where to go for the information and having an opportunity to get that information is hugely important our Title One um through our title on funding we are beginning a tutoring pilot that just started up this week um in grades three four and five identifying students with our District Diagnostic and academic screening data in order to close some of those gaps that do exist from the impact of um of our learning environment over the last few years we're really looking to Target three times a week for a number of weeks with with teachers after school it's going to be something that we feel is going to make a

huge impact in students academic growth and achievement and we can't wait to be able to share that data with this group once we are able to comment on it all right what else family engagement so we have a hugely involved family population like most schools in Milton our PTO is highly energetic they are amazing um and they have Kirsten and I got to meet with them over the summer we were invited to their summer Retreat um their focus this year is on supporting families on creating social connections as lots of families were unable to connect with one another in person if they're in grade three or below it's been a really different family experience for them um and then there are other focus is strategic so strategically thinking about how are we using our funding

how are we using our time and how are we using people's involvement to make the biggest impact at Tucker diversity committee we have an enormous diversity committee uh we meet virtually um on Wednesday evenings once a month and we also have three themes or three subgroups focused on community community outreach how can we connect with our Community Education so an educative part of our work will be around having conversations formally and informally with one another as adults in order to build a strong Community for our kids and then Outreach so um you know cultural programming we're going to bring back Unity night we're doing a lot of trying to re-ground ourselves in what makes Tucker unique um and we're doing a lot of that through these Family Partnership organizations and then the site Council who

joins me tonight um looking at three different buckets of work the first uh being sustainability so brother Dennis was talking a little bit about you know the outdoor Garden we have an outdoor classroom veronique vendett Mary Beth Callahan really lead that work for our faculty I mean we have a strong family group that also participates in that family connection we're focused on really shepherding in those families that come to us um in the middle of their students matriculation so if they're coming in not traditionally as like a new kindergarten family or preschool family but if they're joining us in some of those other years we want to make sure we're connecting them to the community um and then as I mentioned before the Outdoor Classroom next slide please questions on the upper left those are

our preschool friends um during World Peace Day um with full day preschool over to the right is our uh book club our fifth grade book club they were super excited um all these kiddos choose to have lunch with Mrs Driscoll and I on Friday so that we can talk about the book that we are reading and then in the lower left hand corner you'll see Claire Galloway Jones our director of equity and inclusion and she came and spoke with our entire school on our first Community Circle so we gather monthly as a community all together in the gym focused around a social emotional practice but also around responding to what's been going on in school and we were noticing that um you know the words students weren't always understanding the power of their words and

that was something we wanted to make sure that especially at the outset of a school year that we all understood the expectation and impact that words can have on one another um and so she joined us and really focused in on how words can be used to hurt and words can be used to heal and we use that as a major Touchstone as we go through the Academic Year next slide and Kirsten um yeah so when we we talk about the Strategic plan and we talk about our school Improvement plan we really are talking about a shared vision and that means with everyone um and I know I'm preaching to the choir when I talk about the last few years being difficult and one of the things I love about Tucker is how close-knit our

staff is I mean our entire Community is but our staff really is in the past few years have made that really challenging um and we know if we want our students to feel safe and supported at school we need our staff to feel that way we want them to be happy and excited and feel supported to come to school so that they can kind of you know show those feelings towards their students um so we're working really hard this year to get back to connecting with one another and making that a priority um so that being things like our Tucker Unity night has always been a really special event for all of us and it has changed its form a little bit in the past few years because we haven't been able to gather but

this year we're going to bring our Unity night back and I would love to invite you all to be there um pending any major issues it should be around February 16th um we usually try to go to Milton high school and every single grade level puts on a little performance um to a different song that might celebrate a different culture or um our overarching theme for what Unity night will be that night we'll have our fifth graders read some writing samples about what unity means to them why Tucker is special um so we're looking forward to bringing that back like Kat mentioned our community Circle we're trying to do that monthly to bring our entire school back together to have that shared vision of what we want to work on this year um and then

we're really focusing on getting our staff together um and spending time with each other both outside of school and in school in meaningful ways so we're doing monthly faculty outings where we meet up and we get to connect with one another um on a personal level Beyond kind of discussing students in our class and the work that we do every day we're hosting staff breakfast on Friday which Elaine Coughlin who's always been a really really important part of our Tucker Community who retired this year um with someone who hosted and Justine has kindly taken that on this year to bring back because it's really special for our staff to get together on um payday Fridays to just have breakfast in the staff room and start off that day together and collaborating and and laughing before

the day starts um we're lucky to have our ongoing PTO support so they're providing snacks in our our staff room which again those mood lifters that just really make the staff feel supported and um the PTO offers opportunities for our our students to go on field trips um and they're just really great in kind of giving us whatever it is that we're looking for that we need we're really trying to make more time for collaboration um so Kat and I looked closely kind of at schedules this summer before planning this year so that we could find times that grade levels could really have together to meet more often we're being very thoughtful about common planning time and what that looks like and it being structured but giving teachers also that time to collaborate with one

another um our faculty meetings I will say Kat has done a great job of making sure that we're really incorporating all our staff Mrs keaney who sits in our front office who's an integral part of um everyone's school day it's important for her to be at those staff meetings and hearing the work that we're doing in classrooms and our shared vision and our focus our custodian team we're making sure that they are part of all of that with us our lunch staff um so just making sure that we all feel supported and celebrated and that we're all in this together which I will tell you at Tucker you do feel that again like I said you'll see Mr bacon out on that sidewalk welcoming students in the morning which is amazing um that he kind

of does that you know our students really see all of our staff as um people that are in their corner and want what's best for them and are supporting them and are their teachers and that's kind of the culture that we want to keep growing and we're working hard to do this year so cat turn it back to you all right we're wrapping it up everybody don't worry um next slide please so what do we need to get there um you know we we have plenty of data to suggest that we do have some growth to make up we do have some places to go we have some achievement to to encourage um and we're doing that but next slide will show us um just a couple of things we're thinking about and what we're

working towards we have a Relentless focus on data and that doesn't just mean graphs and charts that means we are sitting with teachers we are looking at individual student profiles and we are determining what is needed for next steps for that child we're looking at attendance engagement um what's going to lead what's going to make the difference for that student um we're looking at the implementation of our new curricula as mentioned before we have ongoing professional development and implementation of highly rated curricula that is standards aligned and that's definitely something that's going to contribute to what we are going to consider a very successful year um we are looking at what personalized learning looks like in the classroom Universal Design for Learning professional development um no matter what the curriculum or content how we as

Educators plan and present material makes all the difference to our students we're looking at strong implementation of this new tier one curricula that will lead to the ability to discern what targeted instruction is needed um we're also looking as part of our ongoing pursuit of personalized learning bringing students into the conversation around data as we talked about before really having data conversations with students so that they can own that in a developmentally appropriate way and measure progress towards the given goal we reinforce positive behaviors interventions and supports and second step curricula so really bringing that social emotional curriculum into practice and into real life situations which leads to this last one um increasing supports for all students and so district-wide there are special education programs uh that are housed at various buildings we have collaborative

program at Cunningham the neck program at Calicut Glover houses a variety of of therapeutic programs as well Tucker school does not house any special education programming a big reason for that right now is space we do not have space to house any um individualized programs or special education programs and this is the broken record that you will hear at the end or beginning or all throughout all of the presentations um it is no surprise we are busting at the seams so we're always looking creatively to figure out how we can best utilize the space that we have um in order to support all of our students um and that concludes our formal presentation thank you all for your time if you have any questions we are more than willing to answer what we can great

thank you remember wait we just lost the memory well while we're waiting for her to get back on let's go to Dr Carroll foreign thank you all so much for your presentation um hopefully maybe you saw Julia interrupted even more than usual tonight probably because she knew that you all were on the screen um so listen I you know everyone knows or anyone who knows me knows that um I am a parent of Tucker tigers it's it's just it's just the best I I don't want to play favorites among the Milton Public Schools obviously we know all of us know that all of the schools are amazing um but so much of what you just shared really does resonate from that personal perspective of a parrot who does drop my two precious kids off to

Tucker every day um you know who experienced how you all sort of persisted through the past couple of years um and I think the connection piece that you've uplifted here is so vital but also it's really there so um just for anyone listening I know we didn't have the opportunity to hear from the parents but thank you parents for being here from the site council members like I really feel that um and you know we've had a pajama day this week in my house we've had the farm field trip last week for kindergarten like I got to go on that punk a pug field trip with my mom vendett um you know my older child doing after school does does her homework every day with one her first grade teacher Monsieur Leo who stays after

school to do homework with kids I mean it's just it's just really awesome and I I know you're and you shared the data with us and we know you know um we know that there is work to do and I just really appreciate your detailing sort of the process you're taking to go student by student I mean that really is what personalized learning is after all is to just drill down and understand like what is required to help every kid move from wherever they are you know forward and um I just I so appreciate you and you can't be said enough um everything that you all are doing um and miss deroche the way you've stepped in this year and you know been a leader for our community has just been awesome so thank you

so much for that um I loved I just wanted to call out a couple of the things you shared that I didn't know about that I just so thrilled to learn about um for one the idea of the faculty outings and like the staff breakfast I knew happened sometimes I didn't know they happened with that regularity I really love especially thinking as a former teacher that emphasis on support and connection among the faculty and staff so that's that's just really cool and um I love that you shared that um brother Dennis thank you so much for what you shared I haven't gotten to meet you yet but I've heard so much about you um I do have kids who love the gardening club and they've done they've both done that and so everything you're here

you're talking about is just really exciting and heartwarming and the way you spoke of like your church Community feeling lucky to be across the street from Tucker and vice versa and I just really love that um kind of synergy with the community um and how Tucker is so connected within so I'll just wrap up by saying like I think that theme of connection is so perfect um for this year and so needed as we're all looking to reconnect and connect in in new ways um and you know I just can't say enough about how you the PTO like everybody is working so hard and really um doing so much and we're all benefiting from it so thank you sorry to take all my time I can keep going but I'll stop thank you to Carol

remember wait I'm back um I just wanted to say thank you to the Tucker site Council for this wonderful presentation I really enjoyed your slides and particularly the pictures of the students and I think it speaks volumes to see um the class that came to meet with their teacher at Ponca Fargo to Sunday to see all of them there and to see the um the number of high school students that return to lend a hand that day that was a huge group of students to return to Tucker so you know I've always known that techra's a wonderful place to be a student but it's also a wonderful place to work and I know that people who have to leave there because they get transferred for the district needs I always feel very sad to have

to leave Tucker and always hope that for the opportunity to return if possible someday um your question about your your comments about um Family Outreach I was just wondering you talked a little bit about Outreach to new residents and new families and at Tucker Do you have a sense of given our population growth in our town all over do you have a sense of how many new families there are at Checker like this year compared to previous years so and I I'm looking at Glenn and in the past he would have been the person who could like tell you exactly how many and I realized he just came back to us so he likely doesn't have that number at the ready um you know we've had a good number I would say somewhere in the

ballpark of 15 um to 20. again not Pre-K or k um and we used to do something and I'm going back probably four years or so but a family mentoring program where kindergarten families and any new families to Tucker would be matched with a family that opted in to serve as a mentor family and they would work with them to connect them to like Community programs um just like athletic signups you know drop off and pick up like you know explain Kirsten could probably talk about this but like explaining this year to people all the nuances of of how a school Works kind of reminds you how complicated it really is so we're looking to potentially reinstate that um as we go through the year but somewhere in that in that ballpark okay thank you

Dr Miranda uh yes thank you um so I just wanted to say um Echo sort of what's been said thank you so much for the presentation um thank you for highlighting I think the unique uh aspects of the work that you're doing um that uh gives me great great joy to to hear of the many things and I just wanted to highlight sort of this focus on connections but also um the focus of sort of the comprehensive approach you're taking and that it's really a high-touch approach to creating um connections but not only for students or just families but I think the staff piece is so critical because I know sort of coming out of uh covid and sort of the just the challenging times that we've been in without that dedicated focus and attention

intentionality I think it can really sort of you you can really go down a path that you don't want to go down and so I think the intentionality behind it yeah that is fantastic and that you're taking the time to connect as adults outside of the day-to-day work that you do I think that is important great um way to take care of yourselves and support one another so thank you for the wonderful work that you're doing it's amazing I am just I can't wait to come visit um so thank you so much thank you you're welcome to come any anytime we can make that plan thank you member ask Danny so I promised I will do my best not to repeat what other people have said but I do want to express my appreciation for

both Kirsten and Kat who um cat who joined right before Summer started and seamlessly reintegrated herself into the Tucker community and Kirsten for keeping it going without knowing what was going to happen this school year and I think your partnership is reflected in what you've been able to accomplish in just a few months together I do hope that if your needs do change as you finalize your plan that you do raise those um raise those needs with the school committee so that we can see what we can do in partnership with Glenn who is a seasoned reviewer of all funds but also just to say just the importance of establishing those relationships amongst all of your stakeholder groups is what's going to make Tucker have a very smooth transition into your leadership and brother Dennis

I only spoken to you over the phone but thank you for re-engaging the Tucker community in a thoughtful way the students really do enjoy participating in activities with people who they don't get to see every day and establishing new relationships because then they get the idea that they live in a community that loves and appreciates them for who they are and what they bring and you don't look at our students in a deficit way you recognize the greatness and their aspirations and I appreciate the fact that all the Tucker faculty seem to get that and you're willing to invest the time to make sure that whether you're a new family or a family who's been in the community but you know for whatever reason needs a little more that we now have a team that

is prepared and is resourced at least so far so good to get the work done that our kids need so thank you so much thank you member um I just want to Echo what the other members have already said um and I also want to thank you for the beautiful presentation I thought it was very moving the photos The Smiling kids like all the initiatives that you have put into place in such a short time coming out of covid connections and just connecting with the community and spending that time with individual students it's like really going above and beyond and I am grateful for the staff and I've talked to you know a couple of Staff members I definitely want to come over and visit um and I've definitely talked to a lot of parents

at Tucker and they speak volumes about the great work that is happening in Tucker so I look forward to visiting thank you so much [Music] foreign thank you and I just will chime in as well um thank you thank you all the Tucker team and um principal derosh your first presentation as a principal and we're just so happy to have you here and thank you so much for all that we've done to bring Tucker school to where it is and and with their wonderful team um and to hear about all of the work find work that you've all been doing I was a particularly excited to hear about the student-owned Data Tracking I thought that that something that I think that students tracking their own work and making their own goals and following their own

progress is a very powerful motivator and and involvement in taking a step back and looking at their own work and I'm just wondering when to start that what grade does that begin great question um and I do want to be clear we are just embarking on this piece of the work um Justine is like ahead of the curve here where we're kind of Dipping our toe so I don't want to like paint the picture that we're fully operational in this way however um there are ways to do this with your youngest Learners um we have seen examples of you know kindergarten students Pre-K students in a developmentally appropriate way looking at something they've done and saying you know I really want to like work on my I think they're called dirt letters where they like

scoop below the below the line and I think they could make that there you know whatever the metric is that they use in that classroom they could have a board where they color in a star each time they feel they've mastered that um and so it really it's it's gonna look different and in particular it might even look different within a fifth grade classroom right so we might have students that are tracking data on a Google slide or some that need to do you know the handwritten so I think a lot of this work you know is Shifting our own adult understanding of what it means to track data it's not and I'm doing this like to myself too it's not always looking at a spreadsheet and seeing that upward trajectory it might be you

know a binder portfolio or some slides that students are reflecting on um bi-weekly and so it's a good question and I think we're going to learn a lot in this process but I think that really the bottom line is that metacognitive process of students internalizing reflection and growth and pers persevering towards um you know something they're not doing it like we all do all the time so you know I think it's a large undertaking and we're just this piece we're just beginning so I'm excited to see what it looks like um and like I said Justine's a real Trailblazer so we'll check in with her soon yeah wonderful thank you thank you for sharing that and good luck with that work it's wonderful so thank you very much team uh superintendent chin I'm gonna turn

it back to you thank you chair Rosemary and I I too would like to uh thank um principal deroche and her team for a very comprehensive presentation um and thank you for highlighting so many wonderful learning experiences not only for students but for staff as well it was really really wonderful thank you or at this time I would like to introduce Dr fish and Jake Smith who will be presenting on their trip their field trip to Washington DC Dr fish thank you thank you superintendent good evening everybody um we appreciate having the opportunity to bring this proposal to our school committee uh as superintendo mentioned I'm fortunate to be enjoined tonight by Jake Smith Jake is an 8th grade social studies teacher at Pearson Jake has done a tremendous amount of work to prepare the

proposal to put forth for your consideration just to provide a little bit of I know that you all have the the request materials but to provide some an introduction a little bit of context the eighth grade trip to Washington DC had been in the annual tradition it appears up through 2019. and back in the fall of 2019 so three years ago the trip was proposed as usual but there was a revision that our students and faculty would fly rather than take the bus from Milton to Washington and back that request was approved by the school committee but the trip was later canceled due to the onset of the pandemic in the spring of 2020. so we come here tonight um with a request for your consideration uh in which we're proposing the reinstatement of the

eighth grade class trip to Washington DC the proposed dates are May 24th to May 26 2023. the proposed itinerary is similar I know that there was an inclusion in the packet but quite similar to what has been done in the past um like the 2020 trip proposal this request includes flying as our method of transportation and as we suggested back when the 2020 trip proposal was made flying versus driving with one of the major values added to the trip for families because it is a significant investment one of the major values added was that by flying it would provide students with significantly more time in the city because of reduced travel time rather than an 11 or 12 hour trip each way um spread out over if you know a three day two night trip

we'll be spending a lot much more time in the city by not having to have such uh extraordinary travel time we talk about the costs um when the trip was proposed three years ago the cost of fly was about a 200 increase over previous years when ground transportation was the method so it had previously been about 850 and at the time a couple three years ago it moved up to a little over a thousand dollars like everything else the cost of Transportation has increased over the past three years so the cost of the 2020 free trip is uh 1199 which is an increase of about 160 dollars from from three years ago it's worth noting that we did solicit a price for bus transportation just for a comparison's sake uh and even traveling by bus

would have been about a thousand dollars so again ultimately the additional cost to fly adds significant value to the trip by the way if more time spent in DC and not traveling so our goal is for every student who wishes to participate in the trip to be able to do so and we don't want cost to be a barrier um so we've already begun brainstorming in exploring Partnerships for opportunities to mitigate costs for families who may need some financial assistance nation's classroom who is the travel vendor we've been working with will provide one scholarship one full scholarship for every 50 paying students and they give they give me they give us the opportunity to um handle those scholarships however we like weekly it could be one full scholarship for a student one scholarship could be

divided among two or three students depending on what student families students families needs are there's a variety of fundraising opportunities I know that Jake has has been in touch with the vendor there's been some ideas sort of put forth that we were waiting we're hoping to get your approval on before moving forward but I can also tell you that the Pierce PTO is highly motivated to support this trip I think that a lot of our May um parents in our PTO in broader Community have recognized that this is would be a wonderful opportunity to bring back to our kids who have have missed out on a lot of the field trips especially um so sort of these Rites of Passage and coming of age opportunities like a DC trip for 8th graders would be so

um there are I think that we expect there will be a lot of opportunities a lot of support um financially to help mitigate costs especially particularly for families who um who need to look might need some help um families who are interested in inquiring for financial assistance will be able to do so discreetly we've taken on a couple different strategies over the course the past couple years whether that is um you know soliciting information beyond the free reduced lunch uh list when families if they need help rather than saying they need to come to the principal's office and ask for help we have ways we put out uh survey of families if they like to be contacted to learn more about financial assistance and scholarships which we've seen uh significant um it's initially more families

respond to that and we work with families and giving them different options for what for what is um what's manageable for them and our goal whether it's been welcome to Middle School camp or field trips or just this much bigger class trip on the table um our goal continues to be that any student who wishes to participate is able to do so with cost not being a barrier so should the just moving forward should the committee support this trip requests um next steps would be to invite our eighth grade families to an informational meeting later this month with the travel vendor to begin to share information Logistics around cost itinerary um into begin to get families students and family signed up for the drug so that is I know you have a lot of Logistics

in the packet um Jake and I thought it would be helpful to provide that that background and context uh and if there's any questions that the committee has rejecting we'd be happy to answer them uh member Ross Denny I have more of a comment than a question so when I was in sixth grade my DC trip was canceled both of my sons missed the Pierce DC trip and it was something I very much look forward to look forward to so thank you for not letting this fall by the wayside and even though my children will not be able to go I very much think that being able to fly will make the experience so much more pleasant for anybody whether you're an adult or a child so thank you for your diligence I think it's

a thoughtful plan and I appreciate the fact that you're finding creative ways to meet the financial needs of families because not everyone is in a position to drop eleven hundred dollars so good work and I wish you the best and you have my support thank you Dr Miranda uh yes uh so one question that comes to mind is how do you go about making the trip culturally um accessible to families who you know the idea of letting their child be uh you know leave the house overnight maybe as an immigrant you know in a child of immigrants I can tell you there was no way my parents would have allowed me to go anywhere um and so just wondering how how do you go about socializing the idea with parents um who this might be

just a very foreign concept foreign asking but I think that a lot of this like anything goes back to relationships and connections we heard a lot about Connections tonight and through doctor's presentation I think knowing students well like I think we do and when we look at the students who who sign up and more important looking at students who didn't start asking questions around why maybe they haven't um and whether they are um I think it's it's natural in a situation like this where there's a significant cost involved that if there's a potentially a financial barrier but but when there's not asking questions about what why that might be and whether it be talking with the student or outreaching to families I think that leveraging those relationships and building what we we know and having

the connections that we have with with kids and families would be um maybe another entry point that we could use to um to remove barriers and to to if if a parent or a family is on the fence about sending their child um to help to give them the information or the Insight that they want or need to make a decision that feels good for them foreign good thank you Miss Smith yeah and if I could just add to that I think thank you for having us um by the way and um to add to that I just think that it's also important to provide the students with um an opportunity to make it worthwhile themselves um uh we're hoping that uh we're with working with Nations classroom they're providing kind of a um one

of the days they're looking to do like an option um so there's going to be like um a stem option or um you know people that are interested students that are interested in the arts for example there's going to be portions of the trip that they can kind of cater um to to their interests and so I think that that uh making it so that it's it's it's geared towards you know students and what they're interested in I think that that also provides the opportunity to make it um as worthwhile as possible um you know I I as an eighth grade teacher I hear you know all the time I teach Civics and I hear a lot of kids say like why should I care about this you know and and that's part of it

you know like make it interesting make it relevant to you um and so I'm hoping that that um you know if students aren't interested in the government I'm hoping that going to Washington DC is going to get them a little bit interested and if they're they love it already I hope it's going to grow that even more so I think that providing those options and those choices um for the kids I'm hoping that that generates um some interest in all of them in some way terrific thank you any other questions from school committee members um hearing a member of our keys um I just wanted to um uh just touch on what Dr Miranda said earlier like are parents allowed to go if they felt like they wanted to go with their students and with

their children on the trip is that an option or is it strictly School chaperones the way it's set up is for it to be school chaperones but we've worked I I had different experiences and um with other trips whether they be domestic or abroad where for different reasons whether the family's Comfort or maybe a child's students medical needs or fragility where um you know we work with families and well they they may even if they we don't necessarily require additional parent chaperones you know being able to work with families so that they could stay connected and shield and be um sort of associate or affiliated with the trip even if it's not directly part of it in your Capital capacity great thank you very good thank you well thank you for this presentation um and

it sounds like an exciting a trip and it's wonderful to be able to get back to doing doing activities like this um I like to make a motion to approve the final reading of the Pierce Middle School trip to Washington DC on May 24th to 26th 2023 in a second second thank you uh we'll do a roll call vote unless there's any discussion there's hearing none we'll do roll call vote a member Vargis yes Dr Miranda yes remember us Denny yes Dr Carol yes number White yes chair Rosemary and yes that is unanimous so thank you and good luck everyone yeah appreciate it very much appreciate it thank you very good so the superintendent Sheen is that do it for a superintendent's report yes it does thank you and thank you committee members for um

voting to uh to approve the field trip on the agenda is citizen speak uh this is an opportunity for members of the community to share their thoughts with us we have uh 15 minutes set aside for anyone who wishes to speak um and um if you are joining us um as a community member you can raise your hand and we will promote you to um join us and share your thoughts so if you are interested in speaking please raise your hand I do not see any hands Dr pebblecheck do you see any no no hands raised okay very good well we will move on then thank you very much um so I'm going to move on to the chairs report and I want to um talk tonight about um beginning our superintendent search and we're

going to talk about the timeline and the process and there's quite a bit to tell you about but before I do that I'd like to just make a note that with the resignation of of Mr Jett that is effective on November 4th uh Ms Janet Sheehan will stay on as our interim superintendent while we search for a new superintendent and we are very grateful for her being with us and for her leadership and look forward to continuing our work with her during the the remaining time that she is with us um so thank you very much thank you um our so our um we've been working um busily um in the last week or so to put together a superintendent's search and there are a number of things that we'd like to go through with

you today to um um explain to you and sort of walk you through the the process in particular we'd like to talk about uh the group that we'd like to work with to help assist us with our search we'd like to talk about the draft posting that you've all received and see if if you have any input or suggestions to that posting that is still in draft form and in additionally to talk about the expedited timeline that that will be will be following so first I'd like to just start uh talking about the um the search organization that we're going to be working with we spoke with folks who were involved in um and the town of Milton did the search for a New Town Administrator Nick Milano and just so happens that our very

own Glenn pavlichek chaired that search so it was very nice to have him close by to be able to ask him how how that worked and we were particularly interested in learning about their experience with the Collins Center which is based at UMass that assisted with with that search and the other organization that was brought to our attention was mass Association of school Committees of which Milton Public Schools is a member and and therefore all of our school committee members Our member and um they they both organizations provide assistance for doing searches but when I spoke with Dr pavlichek about the Collins Center his feedback was that they are much more oriented towards municipal government rather than schools School leadership whereas the mass Association of school committees is very much all about public schools and

school committees and superintendents and they have provided a great deal of um guidance to many school districts around the state of Massachusetts in fact they assisted Milton public schools in leading our last search for superintendent which was actually back in 2003 um and so I reached out to Glenn Kutcher who is the executive director of masc and Dr Carol and I met with him and spoke with him about the the possibility of of their working with us and it was very helpful and informative I then met with with um uh uh Mr Kutcher along with Dr pavlacek and Charlene roach from central office to discuss some more of the logistics of of the possibility of working with masc and it and it became clear quite quickly to us that really masc is the preferred organization

to help us with this search and um and the cost of working with them is covered by our membership in mmsc so it incurs no additional cost so so as a result we've been working continued to work with masc to he is um Mr Kutcher has provided a lot of resources already uh he gave us a proposed expedited timeline which met our needs because we are interested in trying to pursue an expedited timeline which means that we will be carrying out all of the same steps of a search as we would that might take longer but in a more con condensed period of time as we walk through the timeline you'll hear more about that but he was able to provide us with a sample timeline he's also been able to provide us with sample

surveys online surveys that they've helped other school districts do and other materials that have been very helpful in in helping us sort of pull our materials together um so um what I think we'll do is start by just walking you through the um draft um posting for the superintendent's position which Dr Carroll took the lead on and um putting together the materials uh for that and again this uh came was wonderful that we were able to send this along um that with the text that Dr Carroll had put together for this posting and send it to masc and they were able to they have an on staff graphic artist who was able to mock it up along with a number of pictures that we sent along with them um and be able to put it

in um a format that will be close to what will go out but we really want to have an opportunity for you to give us any feedback that you might have for um the content of the posting so Dr Carol if I might ask you to kind of walk people through the components of the posting that would be great sure thanks so um you know at as you can see um it is pretty detailed but we were able to one of the other things that Mr Kutcher provided was some examples from other districts that have recently um launched superintendent searches um and so that was actually quite helpful to be able to see um the kinds of things that districts are um you know including in brochures like this and to make sure that we

were going to be able to incorporate all the relevant and like necessary information that a candidate would be looking for when they see a posting and consider whether or not they want to apply so um I don't want to walk through in too much detail what's here because you've been able to read it um you know we we first obviously list out the qualifications which are I think are pretty standard um and um then we really talk about the selection criteria and this is where I'm interested to get feedback from you all around you know making sure that these selection criteria do reflect the priorities that we have in our strategic plan um and that you know we've um or that our our leadership team has set forward um so that's obviously important I think

something we need to confirm together tonight um that part feels a little bit more like tailored to Milton whereas some of the other pieces I think are a little bit um more standard if that makes sense obviously our mission statement is there uh the great pictures um the vision statement is something that I basically tried to Inc include from the Strategic plan so I use language the vision statement of course is you know what we have on our website the vision is coming out of a strategic plan um the core values are also as stated on our website so there are ways in which you know um you know a lot of this we probably can't get into wordsmithing um because that would be a bigger conversation about you know which I'm ready and you

know definitely open to having um at some point but probably not for tonight around the brochure as far as those three pieces the mission statement the vision and the core values that's why I kind of point to the selection criteria is the key place that we should um weigh in on here um I want to thank Charlene for I think it was her who um sort of helped with filling out this list of the administration and staff I think it's common uh practice that these postings list out all of the individual roles within the district that the superintendent would ultimately be responsible for overseeing and leading so that's their uh you see our student enrollment of course and our budget um to point out actually I did make sure in the criteria um let's see

or um or was it down I guess sorry it's in the um Community profile where we want to um address the situation with our our enrollment Challenge and make sure the person coming in knows that this is something that's being you know discussed and worked on but there's our enrollment um over 4 300 students 54 million dollars budget um here here are school buildings there you see engage in seeking options for additional space to accommodate our growing student population our schools by enrollment our demographics um our school committee members and then the community profile um was included from the brochure that uh Ada mentioned the search for the Town Administrator so we were able to basically um use that I did make some changes um or some some additions like making sure to include our

recent designation as the 17th best place to live according to Money Magazine so um little things like that um and there's the timeline which we'll talk about the process I'm really thankful that by working with masc we're able to have someone on their staff actually receive the application so that takes a a large um kind of burden of the paperwork off of what would otherwise perhaps be a member of our central office staff so that's really great that they collect the applications they then kind of get them um prepared to share with the search committee to review the application so any applicants would be applying directly to this individual at masc um and yeah any questions or comments on anything that you see here the search will be as Ada said expedited but people will

still have um you know a good three weeks to submit applications yes remember geese oh questions um I think this is this looks great um I would like um I know and and thank you so much for putting all this work into it it looks beautiful and I'm glad um being a designer I'm glad I'm glad it's laid out so beautifully so um I appreciate all of that I do have I just wanted to know is this posting going to be public to for the community to see because I think that would also be helpful to see what type of you know I think it's a great start to get as many applicants as we can in a short amount of time and I I think it would really come down and I know we'll

talk this talk about this a little bit later on in terms of like you know what going through the applications and people can look good on paper but we want to make sure that you know that we are finding a superintendent who's great for our district too so um just really like you know so but this is I think overall this is a good start but it would be great um I don't know if there's a way to like you you know like post it out there so so people also in the community know what we're looking for the type of candidate um I think it would be a great way for people to get excited about this and bring the community together and I think you know that as we've talked about Connections I

think that's a that's a it seems to be the theme tonight so I you know I and I really would like to kind of encourage that in this process as well thanks yeah thank you that's a great suggestion a member of our gaze and and yeah I don't see any reason why we shouldn't um share that publicly and and you know we'll be we'll be sharing uh quite a bit of information with our community and and be providing various ways for community members to um participate in in the process and um but getting this posting out there I think will give everyone a very clear idea of what it is that we're looking for so that's a great suggestion and we'll we'll figure out where to fit that in with with all the things we're

sending out I think it might be helpful to share with the public um what might happen in the event that any new candidate selected is unable to start until the subsequent school year just so people have a little more context yeah I'll I'll talk about that a little bit more when we go through the timeline um because uh because of the timeline being what it is um we would you know love to have someone begin February 1st but we do we are providing flexibility up until July 1st and um in the timeline itself we have something more clearly stated that I can I can tell you the exact language but but really with the goal that what we want is the best candidate and if that person is available February 1st fabulous if not if

they're not available until July 1st then we will appoint another interim superintendent after um in turn superintendent Sheehan finishes up to fill that Gap in time because what we really want is is the best person that that for the job no um Dr Miranda yes thank you um you know in terms of the selection criteria it looks like it's on point um what I'm wondering is if in the application requirements we can ask for a Dei statement uh we make a point to say that there needs to be a commitment to di right and show that they have done some of that work already but I think I've seen it more and more in terms of requirements particularly for leaders at this level for them to submit a statement that really tells how they will

um how they approach have approached the work and how they will bring that to the district hmm thank you Dr Miranda can I ask a quick um clarifying question on that indeed so do you think where it talks about a personal statement so that that bullet um of what must be submitted does not mention Dei would you suggest that we would just sort of name um that along with accomplishments leadership organizational skills as something they need to directly speak to in their personal statement or in which case it could be I don't know would it be longer than 500 words but also or are you thinking it should be a separate statement a separate statement okay um that's how I've seen them be required for folks to really speak to how they approach uh Dei

and how they have um you know begin to implement strategies into the work I think that um you know given sort of our strategic plan and our focus and really thinking about equity and learning I would be interested in in a separate statement okay thank you Dr Miranda member of Vargis um the only section I was would love a little bit of clarification on is under selection criteria where it says evidence of accomplishment as a central office administrator in improving student achievement for all students through strategic and Innovative leadership I I know we've had a lot of you know and I've seen it in slides where we talk about academic Excellence like I don't know if there's a way to kind of stress that like we also want to kind of you know I and

I know a lot of factors go into like rankings and all of those things but like how can we kind of elevate our district you know like through all of these things that we're talking about but really like I would love to see like a plan in place like I'd love to see like their idea for you know what they've done what has been successful you know I'd like to see more of that um and I don't know if there's a way to like word it a little bit or like maybe you know out of another bullet point just to kind of show because I'd love to see that I think that would be very reassuring to the community as well thank you very good these are some great great suggestions and and we'll take

them under advisement and and look at the um with rather than do wordsmithing now um and uh but but thank you these are these are great suggestions any other comments on the posting okay well thank you thank you Dr Carol for walking us through that and all the work that that um that you put into that um for us um and now I'd like to uh walk you through the expedited timeline um and um you know so some of the the um the bones of that or in the posting in terms of the deadlines and and and the expectations about when we might actually be hiring but the timeline that that we sent out provides more detail about um exactly what what we'll be doing um and when um we will be um soliciting members

to have a total of 10 members uh on the um what we're calling a screening committee which which um is the role of this committee is to screen applicants interview them and identify that their top two or three um uh um um applicants to be passed along to the school committee and then the school committee will then interview each of those finalists publicly um and um later in January and so of that um of those 10 we will include three school committee members and we have three volunteers already that includes myself Dr Carroll and member Vargis will have one principle and these will be um appointed or solicited and and recommended by uh superintendent Sheehan one principal one central office administrator one teacher and one representative from Unity B um this is our directors and

coordinators um and for a total of ten and three parents and we are sending out a request to our the general public school public school Community for parent Guardian Representatives who might be interested in participating in this screening committee and that notice will come out tomorrow with the blog and along with I believe a follow-up individual email Standalone email with information [Music] about being a member of the screening committee and what folks need to do to apply there's a small Google form that people need to fill out but one of the things that we're very clear about is that people who are volunteering must be available for all of the dates that have been identified for the search this selection committee meetings and I'll walk you through what those dates are but but um we

we really have been working hard to identify um what the dates of those meetings will be in advance because it's it's just so critical to making this group work and and so we were asking people to really consider those dates and times and really only volunteer if they can make themselves available for all of those dates and times um we're also going to be doing um a number of focus groups um that will be led largely by Glenn Kucher Mr Glenn Kucher from masc um um and on November 14th and 16th and those will be will be sending information out about about those in the coming days those will be for different groups within the Milton Public Schools staff Community central office principals department heads coordinators and and and faculty and staff and then we'll

have two sessions for parents and Guardians and community members and we'll also offer both virtual and in-person options for those last two groups the the all all staff and community members um um forums so those those will be scheduled for um November 14th and November 16th and that information will be coming out um uh tomorrow as well and with links to follow for those virtual virtual sessions then the screening committee will will meet I think it's a total of five times let me begin first on November 17th in the evening to do orientation and reviewed topics for interview questions um and um the the um posting will go out as soon as possible after we are able to revise the posting based on the comments that we've gotten tonight and we will get that out

um in in the just in the coming days one thing that that we're we're dealing with also is that masc is also running their annual conference right now this week Wednesday Thursday Friday this week um so we're they're juggling quite a number of things but um I did speak with Glenn Kutcher this morning from the conference and and they he's very making himself very available to us given what our timeline is I see a couple hands up so why don't we move to those Dr Miranda yes um yes thank you for presenting uh you know what is a very detailed um plan and then expedited one so um I think we have a big a big task ahead of us um but wondering um if we had thought about student voice and how will we

integrate student voice in this process that's a very good question and I don't exactly know unless unless you know we do if we could do a focus group with students um that might be something or um we can look at our online survey as well um we'll have to um take a look at that in the schedule yeah no definitely I think especially at the higher grades it might be important for us to hear from them yeah that's a great suggestion thank you sure thank you remember Vargis um yes so I had a question um are the I know we are sending requests to parent and parents and guardian Representatives within the school community of guessing of just current students what about you know community members are they able to participate by any chance as

a volunteer um you know having like people who have kids who have graduated from the Melton Public Schools who have gone through who kind of understand like hey what has worked in the past what hasn't I know things are changing have changed since then but it might be nice to have that perspective just just as an option so it might you know if people wanted to I know we're we're limited to 10 people in total but might be just to give them the option if they wanted to apply um might be a good thing so just okay yeah I mean one of the things that that we um were advised was to try to keep the the size of the committee down so that it was a workable size group in terms of scheduling and

and participation and also but I but I I hear your suggestion and and I I think um one one thing that that um we have talked about um is that um fortunately we've got two volunteers who have agreed to um help us sort through the um the volunteer names that have been submitted from our parent Guardian Community um to make a recommendation as to um to be sure that we have the representation of of all the different levels in our schools and different backgrounds and different groups that folks are involved with and like I mean you know bear in mind that there are only three seats for for parents and Guardians um but um but to have um and that's member white and member Ross Stanley have agreed to um take take on that role

to to review those um who had submitted their names and make the recommendations for that and and that's also following the procedure that was followed back in our last um um search back in 2003 where the school committee at the time did the same thing so it was it was two school committee members who were not on the um screening committee um who would participate in in helping by by helping uh to identify and make recommendations of those parents who volunteered uh member White um just a question about the the timing I'm glad to see that you're asking for all of the members of the screening committee to make the commitment of time to be available to do the um interviews but in case of an emergency or someone's situation suddenly changes and they're not

available prior to the interviews getting going is there a thought to having like an alternate like teacher or administrator or an alternate parent for in case something changes and that particular individual is no longer available a good idea um hadn't I hadn't considered that but um yeah let's let's let's think about how how we might make that work um it is it is true things come up um and uh we want to be sure to have a full complement of folks involved Dr Carroll I was just gonna um respond to member of our geese's you know good question about um who might be eligible or what have you for the three parent Guardian spots so whomever gets selected for those just to underscore that the focus groups my understanding is those definitely are open to

members of the community who are not current parents or guardians of mountain Public Schools so just we will we will really need to focus on our Outreach for those to make sure that you know everybody in Milton basically feels welcome to attend those and share if they have perspectives um that they want the screening committee to consider in this you know in the screening process that that's um a really good opportunity for people to make sure that their perspectives are included um so I'm glad that we're you know going to try to do those in a way that hopefully can reach as many people as possible to be able to participate um but I do just think we need to think outside the box and how we get the word out about those opportunities to

make sure that people know that that they're welcomed right right thank you for thank you for bringing that up good afternoon Carol member Vargis um I just wanted to make a point about that like in terms of Outreach I wonder if we can put you know put something in the Milton times I know a lot of like you know the older community members read that you know and they're very you know having a great school system is very very important to them even even though they don't have kids they could potentially have grandkids in the school system so I think that might be a good Avenue to um get the word out the other thing I wanted to ask I I haven't seen the um the form that um the potential uh volunteers would be

filling out is there enough where they can is are the questions pretty open-ended where they can kind of you know say okay yeah yeah they can talk about you know what their strengths are in terms of what they could bring to the volunteer committee okay great yes yes background and groups are involved with in community and and why they want to be on um the committee yeah the one thing is a good point we we had talked about the possibility of putting something in the mountain times and um we just have to think about deadlines but I think I think we could do that um if if the Milton times would be so kind as to publish it for us um because our our focus groups excuse me are on November 14th and 16th and

um so and this is since this is only November 2nd we could um technically get it in by deadline on Friday to be in next Thursday's paper which would be prior to I don't have a calendar in front of me but I think it would be in time um so I think that's a great idea and we'll see if sometimes would be willing to help us with that it's a great suggestion um so so I think you you've gotten hopefully the gist of the of the their um as um uh after the screening committee has had an opportunity to to meet and become oriented and and discuss uh question possible questions um and then re and our second meeting reviewing the actual um candidates to be interviewed um and selecting them then there will be

we have three dates set aside for actual interviews um December 10th which is a Saturday it would be all day on December 10th and then we have two subsequent evening set aside we don't know if for sure we'll need both of them but we've blocked them out so December 12th and 13th in the evenings um and um so those will be um when the the interviews will take place and then um at the conclusion of that um the um screening committee will bring forward their recommendations to school committee at our December 21st meeting and then um in January and January 11th um we will do our live interviews and we'll we'll obviously that point someone else they will then ask um if they are okay with um us sharing their information that their their candidacy

publicly um because um you know that until that time the all their information will be confidential but um for this highly visible position we we feel it's very important to have these live interviews um and there will be site visits um uh mid-January and by um January 18th we hope to be able to appoint a new superintendent and um having a new person who may be able to start as early as February 1st and and and and on this uh timeline we have here this is the language of the strongest candidate identified by the school committee is unavailable to start on or be around February 1st the school committee May appoint another interim superintendent following Insurance interim superintendent Sheehan's departure until this start date of the new superintendent so it gives us that flexibility um

so that if if we find someone who is available um that is our Top Choice who is available February 1st they will begin then and otherwise we are willing to work with during that time between February 1st and July first for someone to start remember Greg is I just had a question I mean um you know I know with like hiring process like lately it's hard to find good candidates in all Fields I mean I'm experiencing that myself so if you know I I know we have an expedited schedule so if for instance we don't find the best candidate and we do our interviews and do all of these things is there some sort of backup plan where we might have to you know like take longer and if if there is would you mind

like explaining it a little bit more yeah yeah thank you for bringing that up um and and it's one of the advantages of having this expedited timeline well number one is that we're getting out of in front of other school districts that are looking for superintendents and it's a competitive market um um but we we are told that there are a lot of good candidates out there um and this will get our our posting out early and get interviewing early which I think um is a is a great place to be but if we don't find someone in this first round that by the by the end of this process we don't feel like there's someone who really we feel comfortable um appointing that we would go out for a second round of of um

advertising and and um do it again um and um yeah we have a timeline set for that but thank you yeah thank you thanks for bringing that up so any other questions or comments about the timeline um so um hearing none um we just need to take a vote tonight on the formation of um the screening committee and the appointment of our um members and I'm just trying to find my chair Rosemary and we have in the Motions It also says emotion made to work with yeah that's yeah Association yeah yeah so is that two separate votes yeah that's it we're actually going to use a slightly revised um motion let me just okay yeah yeah I know that that was something that that was sent out earlier today but um um we discussed this

with um attorney Emerson this morning um for his advice about what what we need to to do in this regard and um he felt that this would be um appropriate so um this is uh um this is the most made to form into a Elizabeth Carroll committee along with seven other members to be determined to the screening committee you have a second um you were sort of breaking up at the beginning of when you were reading that oh I'm sorry I'm sorry yeah my connection may not be so good can you hear me now all right so let me try it again motion is made to form a superintendent screening committee and to appoint Dr Elizabeth Carroll member Anna varghese and chair Ada Rosemary to represent the school committee along with seven other members to

be determined to the screening committee thank you any discussion okay we'll go through roll call vote and member Vargis yes Dr Miranda yes remember us Denny yes Dr Carol yes remember wait yes chair Rosemary very good thank you um so well thank you for for um for us to consider and we will we will go back and um look at the the plans and the materials and do our best to incorporate your suggestions I really appreciate your thoughts on on all these um so that moves us on to our next item on the agenda which is the curriculum and instruction advisory committee report um member Ross Denny well good evening everyone we had and I'm going to my notes right now uh the curriculum instruction advisory committee met on the morning of October 21st with

Dr Carroll um member White assistant superintendent McKinney as well as math director Brian selig and social studies K-5 director Aaron don't have her last name um but I trust Garth want to help me out here it's a chaplain is it Kim Kaplan Kim Kaplan call to the Roman and Xena Yamada and Xena Hamada and we had a very robust agenda but we ended up only making it through two agenda items one getting an update on the social studies curriculum implementation as well as the math curriculum implementation so I'm just going to briefly walk you through a summary of what we covered toggle back to my notes so Kim shared that MPS adopted a social studies curriculum developed by Savas and our teachers are trans in the process of translating those materials so that they can

be printed in French Kim kaplan's overseeing the implementation and she's been attending the common planning times across each one of the elementary grade levels so the one piece of context I should have highlighted here is that the new social studies curriculum review that we're discussing is for the Elementary grades um she sent out a survey to our teachers essentially to monitor the quality implementation and also to get their feedback and she's working with the social studies curriculum committee to support the implementation um just for the general public you should know that each grade level team meets to talk about content areas at each school at each grade level so it's a very Hands-On and robust implementation plan so far the feedback that Kim has received is that things are great so far people are pleased

with the quality of the materials the curriculum came last spring with some of the sample lessons already in it so our teachers had the opportunity many of our teachers had the opportunity to start becoming familiar with the content before the full implementation this year and so far teachers have shared that they're comfortable with the content and they're also impressed with the multiple Opera options to to differentiate instruction so there's no one way that you can teach particular content the materials are adaptable so a teacher can pick from maybe one of several lessons that cover the same content but teach it in a slightly different way to meet the needs of that classroom teacher and there's also a variety of built-in assessments so they can determine whether or not students are understanding and retaining the content

that's being delivered before I move on to the math update I'm going to toggle back to zoom are there any questions about what I shared and we also had Brian Selleck join us who's the K-12 math director and he walked us through the adoption of the new K5 math curriculum which is published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt called into math it's a more rigorous and standards aligned curriculum than Everyday Math every lesson has an exit ticket that can be submitted in different ways so once again providing an opportunity to provide easy ways to determine whether or not students are learning the new content and this year we've seen that what works and what doesn't work and then they're collecting some feedback um through at the committee level so each one of our schools once again is

using that grade level team model Brian is also established a math curriculum council with representatives from each grade level and each school that meets monthly to monitor the curriculum implementation he's also meeting weekly with the curriculum coordinators at each Elementary School to talk about how the transition is going and last but most certainly not least the materials initially did not come in French but the publisher gave Milton access to the text files so essentially Milton has been able to translate the two required French grades for math which are first and second grade and we also have the capacity to custom print the materials so they look in their native form they're going to get the paper workbooks in French so it doesn't look like they're getting one-off copies so really appreciate the attention to detail

on this and Xena Hamada did chime in on both the quality of the engagement with the French teachers for both the social studies and math adoption we did end up running out of time Brian said he was more than happy to come back and finish but I'm very pleased with what I've heard there's some um more information that I would love to be able to gather from both Dr McKinney as well as Brian Sally but I'm I'm glad to be able to share with all of you that we've went through rigorous process to identify more standard aligned curriculum and the district came up with an implementation plan that reflects many of the best practices I'm sorry research based practices that we know about for curriculum adoption so any questions all right I guess it's getting

late all right thank you so much thank you very much remember us Danny appreciate it um next on the agenda is the update from the strategic planning advisory committee Dr Miranda yes thank you chair Rosemary um I am just looking for my notes um I'd like to begin the update just by sharing some overall comments and then getting to the specifics of what the committee covered so the committee did meet on October the morning of Tuesday October 25th and I apologize that I don't have the roster of who attended in front of me perhaps Dr McKinney can help me fill in that Gap in a little bit but um in terms of I like to set up first just begin with some context you know one of the dangers of strategic planning is that you

end up with a beautiful presentation or perhaps a report that can sit on a shelf I can tell you that this is not the case with our most recent strategic plan our plan is alive and well just as a reminder to the public that the Milton Public Schools we have identified three strategic initiatives as part of our current strategic plan which runs from 20 22 through 2027 and while it has been said many times that this plan is Evergreen meaning that adjustments can be made in response to unanticipated circumstances or other information We Gather along the way between now and 2027 what I think it's important to put in to keep in mind is that the plan sets a North star to guide our actions as a district over the next five years as a

reminder there are three strategic initiatives guiding our actions over the next five years and they are as follows personalized learning safe and supportive schools and equity and learning we believe and we heard a lot about this last week which is that there's a theory of action here and we believe that when these three interconnected initiatives are realized we will see the following students will experience a robust and kind of an academically reached Rich School experience the district will experience growth in high stakes testing outcomes and performance outcomes such as achievement and opportunity govs will be reduced and or eliminated as we have seen over the last couple of meetings that we've held as a school committee our strategic plan is in full motion and is showing up in the work and priorities at each of

our schools this has been evident in the site Council presentations we have heard up to this point Pierce Middle School Calicut Elementary and tonight's presentation from the Tucker team we also saw this in last week's metrics team update how our focus and tracking of data is aligned well with our plan so now to more specific updates under personalized learning there has been a lot of great movement that has happened mostly around professional development specifically around personalized learning the MPS leadership team has been has began training on data analysis the training has been provided by data wise project which we also heard about last week the MPS leadership has conducted a learning walk at Cunningham focused on key aspects of teaching and learning Equity SEL student engagement and personalized learning we are looking and this is

also something we heard last week we are looking at PowerSchool as an integrated system to monitor student achievement in standard Mastery going forward Universal learning design training has has started and again we heard that mentioned today that are at the school level administrators and also teachers are learning all about uld and how to begin to implement that in the classrooms um we also talked about the fact that we're currently working on a personalized learning website not only for staff but also for families as a resource for them for there to be better understanding across not only the schools in terms of staff and teachers but also families on how they can support their students through personalized learning now under safe and schools and safe and supportive schools we talked about Safety and Security procedures and

training that happened actually in late summer um also under um SEL social emotional learning um there have been and we actually heard about it today again in today's presentation that there have been leads that have been identified at each of the schools it's actually two per schools and their responsibilities are many um you know part of it is completing the comp classroom training which again we heard today and then bringing that back into the schools it's a train the trainer model um we also talked about the updated online Second Step curriculum that's going to be utilized you know Pre-K to five classrooms um you know there's there's so much that actually has happened and I don't want to go Point by point but I think in this particular area it's good to note that there's

still a lot of training that's happening in fact yesterday there was a training on strategies for creating a trauma-sensitive classroom which again we heard about today and this is my point exactly that really um the Strategic plan is being implemented uh not only you know at the district level but at the school level and you hear the excitement I think and how the these three uh pillars are really guiding the work on the ground now in terms of equity and learning uh you know we continue to work with mass ready which was a new group to to me actually I didn't know much about this group this Mass racial Equity diversity and inclusion strategy which is an organization-wide long-term strategy of the Massachusetts Association of school superintendents and it's designed to ensure that every school

in the in the Commonwealth learns to be anti-racist and use inclusive practices forever every adult and every student to learn and Thrive so we continue working with them closely we also continue our relationship with mass partnership for diversity in education and thinking about teacher diversification we were told that we recently applied for a grant to focus on low-income students and bypoc students who are interested in pursuing education as a as a career path and how could we can support them to be tomorrow's teachers um there have been also been meetings with the policy subcommittee which we have also heard in our meetings to take a look at our policies through an equity lens director Claire Galloway Jones has been very busy working with our restorative justice coach and in leading some professional development sessions she's

also been going to specific schools spending time there and working with teachers and administrators uh there soon we will begin some Equity walks and uh we will we didn't get a chance to discuss exactly uh more on those specifics of those Equity walks but I know that there's some framing going around that um I I guess uh I would end by saying that we ended our conversations with um almost a somber uh point which is how do we make sure that all the games that have been made all the great work around the strategic planning up to date continue given that some of the funds that have been used to support some of those initiatives some of the exciting movement that we're seeing uh were actually connected to uh pandemic relief so how do we

make sure that these become institutionalized going forward and that we can continue to support the good work that's happening [Music] and Dr McKinney I don't know if you would add anything else uh no thank you Dr Miranda I think we covered everything wonderful thank you very much and any questions or comments well having having been involved with uh strategic plan planning advisory committee for last really since I've been on school committee it's just it is it's wonderful to hear each of the school site councils come and talk about how it is really alive and well and in action in The District and I'm also really looking forward to our public forums that we have scheduled during the year that that highlight each of the pillars of the Strategic plan with our our next one coming

up next week um a first one coming up next week on personalized learning so um it's very exciting to see the progress and look forward to hearing hearing more about it as the year goes on Dr Carroll thanks I was just gonna say I mean thanks to both of you I remember rostani and Dr Miranda because in hearing your back-to-back reports is just sort of a reminder to me um what a great opportunity these advisory committees are for those of us on school committee to partner with books in the district and the community around like the important work that's happening kind of day in and day out and um you know I know those are just two of the many advisory committees not to mention subcommittees that we're all serving on so it's kind of

nice to um get the updates because we can't all be in all places um so thank you both for the comprehensive reports thank you absolutely thank you um we will move on next on the agenda we have approval a vendor warrant [Music] um let's see that's me all right yeah that you have that one and then boy yeah I have one so I'm asking for you to approve vendor warrant number 16 dated November 3rd 2022 in the amount of 386 000 81.33 can I get a second on that second thank you okay I'm gonna do a roll call vote uh member of our geese yes Dr Carroll yes remember Ross daddy yes Dr Miranda yes chair Rosemary yes and myself yes all right that's it for this evening very good thank you um uh meeting

a um I believe we have uh budget related items for our next meeting which is November 16th um so we'll look forward to diving more into to that and now I'd like to uh uh make a motion to move into executive session to discuss strategy for negotiations with non-union Personnel pursuant to mess General Law chapter 30A section 21 A2 [Music] and not turn to open session and a second thank you and roll call vote uh uh Dr Carroll yes Dr Miranda yes remember uh Danny yes remember varghese yes remember White yes and Cheryl is married yes very good we'll see you in executive session good night everyone [Music]
