003girl was driven by her mom on her way to take on the first day of high school as she nears the corner of 39th Avenue and Cactus a tear begins to flow actually it was more like a flood of Tears negative thoughts filled her mind I don't want to go I don't want to go change a concept she had yet to completely grasp it was me I was that young girl in case you hadn't quite gotten that just yet big girl now my name is yamalika Vargas and I am your student body president as a senior that was a freshman in the year 2020 you might think that I'm going to talk your ear off about covid impacting my high school experience I am here to flip the script remember that idea of change I
004had previously touched on yeah I think we all have that down at this point Dad if you haven't been listening this is the part where I think you should tune in he gets distracted sometimes I can personally thank my heroes for the trait of perseverance my two amazing parents Ivan and Lucia Vargas are the sole reason I even have the opportunity of standing here today 27 years ago they embarked on the biggest journey of their own lives they left everything they knew in Mexico to begin their new life in the United States for us for my siblings and I a daunting task to many but with determination and endurance all things are possible and my parents are my prime example they granted us the gifts of opportunity that very gift is one I will hold
005in my heart through every single one of my own Endeavors gracias Los Amos change does not only affect family but it comes in multiple forms my senior year I was bombarded with changes I did not expect two women who helped build the program so near and dear to my heart moved on leaving me with a daunting task of keeping the Spirit Alive even if this year did not quite see the school spirit that coveted in its After Effects may have stolen from us you all still hold that Spirit deep inside of you when change comes to knock you off your feet it is your choice on whether you get back up or not you choose to come back that next season and do better you choose to switch that grade you choose to interview again
006you choose to change that perspective leading off this idea I want to give a huge shout out to my Competition Palm team we all were faced with the daunting task of a do-over without a glimpse of guaranteed success thankfully it worked in our favor and we made history by being the first competition Palm team at Moon Valley High School to not only make it to finals but placed second in nation for our division all in all that very trophy would not have been possible without my coach teacher and stucco advisor all in one the woman that kept me stabled throughout a final year of pure chaos my rock Miss Sussex thank you from the bottom of my heart finally a huge thank you to all teachers and coaches who have paved the way for our
007further Endeavors and stuck beside us when All Odds were against us it takes an army they provided us with the platform to leave our marks on Moon Valley and make an evident impact on any club extracurricular activity or sports team we chose to participate in I can confidently state that after all the late night assembly setups dance shows and Tents basketball games cheering on our boys I am fulfilled with what I have made my very own version of High School Musical I hope you all can say the same for yourselves I thank you from the bottom of my heart for granting me an opportunity to be your student body president this year we did it thank you we are most fortunate to be supported by a caring District administration and governing board governing board President
008Kennedy is with us this evening Patty Kennedy is a longtime resident of the Glendale Union High School District and was elected in November of 2010. she graduated from Moon Valley High School and her two children also attended Moon Valley High School Miss Kennedy and her business and her husband Brendan own a business valuation firm in Phoenix and are active in the rotary youth Exchange program we're very grateful for joining us tonight to this afternoon also with us this afternoon is Mr Matt Belden Mr Belden is the assistant superintendent of operations and Athletics for the Glendale Union High School District and we also thank him for being here with us Moon Valley High School confers its highest academic honors by designating the top one percent of the graduating class I am pleased to present the three
009students who hold the highest academic ranking in this class of 290 members these students will graduate tonight with the highest distinction wearing a gold medallion I asked them to please stand as I call their names Kate Inman Parker samanda Tina Nguyen I would also like to acknowledge those students who are ranked academically in the top 10 percent of their class they are wearing red cords this afternoon while I will not present them to you individually please draw your attention to their names which are marked in the commencement program and I ask you to applaud their accomplishments as honor graduates lastly please also note those students wearing a red white and blue honor cord this afternoon these students will be entering the military upon graduation would you please show your appreciation for these graduates as well
010at this time we will hear from our three members of the top one percent hello and welcome everyone my name is Kate Inman this moment has been my dream for at least four years if not longer but it still feels unsatisfying to be here it feels like I should have done more High School ending has brought up a lot of mixed feelings for me I put in multiple 16 hour days in a week pulled countless all-nighters took a total of 13 AP tests have an average daily cry count of about 2.66 cries per day probably closer to three by now and have spent the last four years feeling almost completely alone I've burned several important important bridges for the sake of achievement that wasn't okay but it was okay for me to learn from that
011it is okay for me to look at these failed friendships from the perspective that I was young and dumb and believe that people would only love me if I accomplished something it is okay to give myself Grace and it is still okay for me to find joy in achieving top one percent and more I gave up a lot to be here on this stage I didn't need to sacrifice my sanity my friends or my family my sleep or my livelihood but I did and I can't take that back I can say to all of you though that no dream or achievement is worth your identity or worth your mental and emotional stability I can tell you that the people you meet that make you feel safe that maybe make you feel loved for the first
012time in a while those are the people you need to fight to keep close I can say that hard work does pay off but there needs to be limits because you should always be your top priority because you love yourself put yourself and your healthy relationships before anything else simply because you love yourself that's no easy task I'm speaking from experience but I found that the relationships I've cultivated and the community I've formed around me at Moon Valley have been much more satisfying than my awarded successes I'm beyond grateful to the people that I've been lucky enough to spend time with for four years it's easy to feel completely alone especially when others place you on a pedestal but I don't have to isolate myself because I have wonderful people in my life that I
013assume like my personality I regret the way things ended with some of my close friends but I still adore every single person I got to know every relationship has been special and has helped to shape me into a better person and I hope that at least one person here can say the same thing about our relationship I would never wish to replace the teachers and staff that took the time to be a part of my life my teachers aren't paid nearly enough but they still go above and beyond in taking the time to help and nurture every student that they can that kind of patience and unprompted Care are things I desperately need in my life and I'm lucky to have found that in the faculty of Moon Valley it's hard to leave my home
014Moon Valley behind but I know I need to going to Oregon is something I've always wanted and I get to be sad about leaving even when I know that this is what I want It's upsetting to watch friendships dissipate before I've even left but I'm grateful that I ever had those people in my life to begin with thank you to everyone who put an effort into my life mental felices there are no words and for while there weren't I thought finishing High School is the hardest thing I do all year turns out writing this was harder greetings fellow seniors we did it you probably don't know me like I don't know many of you so hello my name is Parker and my pronouns are he him I could say it wasn't easy but I'm sure
015you've been hearing that or repeating that to yourself since March so I'll tell you it has been truly humbling and by that I mean it hasn't been humbling at all I'm half my success and would like to share that with you we made it through High School the Tartarus of well-adjusted adults covet certainly didn't make the experience any easier I look at the change and positive reception I've received on campus and I'm given a hopeful outlook on the future of equality our community is our first and foremost brick wall and it's the starting place of your own self-discovery I'm truly grateful for the changes that have been made the open mindedness open-mindedness that has been achieved that has allowed me to Branch out I hope all of our successors soon have an accepting future to
016feel as good as I do right now the experience of the past two years has changed with being the top one percent has meant for me for me this placing in the top one percent deal has always been planned out for me enter high schools good grades and to say hey might as well right I started my high school career a completely different person being the top one percent has become less about proving myself and more about actually wanting to succeed for myself I couldn't be prouder to be Parker in time for graduation but this isn't just about me I don't see my faces in all those seats I see you guys and you know why because you're graduating no one here is thinking about it first it's only our last and this this is
017a culmination of your last High School experience it's been a long time since I've experienced a real ending every show nowadays gets canceled and I can't remember the last time I sat down to read a book you should have pride in how far you've come and finished high school not everyone can say they've done it go on and shine bright like a diamond or whatever you'll make an impact on the goals on the world whether you see it or not your goals may be difficult to reach but the effort should be made even if it takes a few years to reach the heights you were hoping to rise to try the time will pass anyway and now and I say this lightly as I am very passionate about my future profession if you'll excuse me
018I'm gonna go throw away all my money learning how to draw a picture class of 2023. good afternoon friends family teachers faculty and especially class of 2023. we made it well almost hi my name is Tina and I am honored to be standing here reading all the excitement that we have all been waiting for over the past years months days now minutes as we started kindergarten together in 2010 we began to create the adult we've always learned to become little by little we dreamed big we dreamed day by day wishing that this day would come faster I remember writing a letter to myself in third grade on the outside of that purple envelope my teacher Miss Killian made us promise ourselves that we would not open it until May of 2023 the day of our
019graduation that day is now today I still remember exactly what I wrote 10 years ago my little third grade self believed that by the time I graduated high school I would have already become a doctor I have Big Dreams much like all of us here today but one thing I could definitely say is that we are stepping even closer to our Ambitions as we continue to move forward we will be able to make our dreams a reality even if they were as silly as mine from 10 years ago ten years from now I believe that we can fulfill our goals so we will be able to say we made it once again we continue to grow we grew up waiting for the bells to ring at 2 35. we grew up waiting to finally be
020able to drive and have our own cars we grew up waiting to get a job so that we could do so we so that we could spend on whatever useless things that made us so happy we grew up without realizing our parents were growing up alongside us we Groove as our parents watched us grow hoping and wishing that we would be their babies forever we grew up so that our parents didn't need to watch over us anymore from walking into high school as strangers we're growing up together and walking out as friends we grew out of high school we made it and before this moment comes to an end I would like to say to my parents [Music] finally we said our goodbyes but opened up to new hellos In This Moment we can look

022first want to take this opportunity to thank those who have helped them get to this important day to the parents families and friends of today's graduates thank you for your support your assistance your guidance and maybe most of all your patience during these high school years and I would also like to extend a huge thank you to The Faculty staff and administration of Moon Valley High School it is due in no small part to your dedication and your support that these students are well on their way to being productive well-educated and active members of our community it's been a long time since I graduated from this very school and sat where you are except it was a really hot football field yet I still remember that feeling on graduation day the feeling of accomplishment the
023feeling of Freedom the feeling that I could do anything that I knew everything and that the life plan that I had locked away in my head was absolutely perfect I've learned a few things since that day that I want to share with you most importantly know that life does not always go according to plan being adaptable is an essential skill and it is so important to utilize the critical thinking skills that I hope you have learned over the past four years now I'm sure that people have already been telling you to quote find your passion but here's the thing you guys already know in your hearts what your passion is it's what you spend your time doing it's how you choose to spend your money find a way to turn that passion into your work
024but also realize that over time your passions may change or evolve and you need to be a debt you need to be able to adapt with them make the time to know yourself to really really know yourself what makes you wake up in the morning just raring to go what are your personal set of standards what makes your stomach churn and what makes you grind your teeth what defines you separately from what anyone else thinks of or about you knowing yourself will help guide you when unexpected events both good and bad plant themselves on your path find the courage to fight with all your heart for those things that are just and right fight to make the world a better place for all of us you must be ready for my generation to constantly tell
025you everything that can't be done things like getting the money out of politics ending world hunger lowering the world's carbon emissions or ending racial tensions and my generation knows those can't things can't be done right after all we're the ones who haven't done them but I have every confidence that you guys are going to succeed where my generation failed also today it's a really popular Pastime and maybe it always has been to blame politicians for everything that's wrong in the world but here's the truth politicians are duly elected by the people that's why it is so important for you to be active in your community and to get to know your neighbors here or wherever you end up the founding fathers put the future of our Republic into our hands and the system will only
026work properly properly if all of us are active involved and if we vote I also challenge you to never stop learning whatever path you choose wherever your next adventure takes you whether it's to a university a community college a technical school the military or some other path learn all you can every day because knowledge is power I have been lucky enough to visit your classrooms and I've talked with some of you and I've talked with your teachers who know you better than I do and I'll tell you this you guys give me so much hope so on behalf of the entire governing board I want to congratulate you I want to thank you for your extraordinary efforts over the last few years some of them have been very trying whatever decisions you make whatever path
