001yes okay one minute warning this is normal yeah they're always excited to be here you kidding me i love it they want to see me [Laughter] okay we're getting ready i'm gonna call this meeting can you guys hear me check check all right i'm gonna call the meeting to order at six o'clock i needed adoption of the agenda i moved to adopt the agenda um favor hi motion carries five to zero i want you guys to know do you guys see all five of us here in person [Music] we would like the marketing department to take a picture of this we need you have your camera kayla yeah okay the pledge all right approval um of the meeting minutes is there any questions about the meeting minutes are we good all right i'll need an
002approval of the meeting minute uh i move to approve the governing board special meeting minutes from june the 20th second all in favor motion carries five to zero did we just oh we need two of them right all right and the regular meeting minute so i moved to approve the minutes of the governing board proposed budget hearing regular meeting on june the 20th second all in favor aye aye aye motion game is five to zero hey i'm listening i'm trying to count all five yeah all right okay uh superintendent report thank you madam president uh just a couple of different things we want to get into obviously we're getting ready to start up the school year i did want to let you know that for all the uh excitement that's generated the lg electric plant
003is currently on hold um there have been several newspaper articles that's gone back and forth and several newspaper articles uh confirmed that uh lg electric are is debating what they're gonna do with their next steps and there's three primary reasons for that and uh the notion of many grants for teachers and so if we can raise enough money we would look to see how do we bring back so many grants for teachers the other piece that we are looking at that many foundations are starting to do and if you look at foundational work it's really about your growth pattern and so foundations tend to go like this and then when you build out so you see a place like chandler is basically built out you tend to see this happen only because business partners don't
004partner quite as much if there's not growth taking place because they don't have business and since we're down here at the bottom getting ready for some growth we would like to create an endowment that would ensure that when we get to that top part there's enough million enough money in the endowment no yeah no seriously our our goal over the long term would be that we'd have at least a million dollar endowment um so that as you peak and go down then there's at least forty thousand dollars annually that you could use in the area that we wanted to use without having to tap into the principal so it's it's a it's a very aggressive goal but i would anticipate given the size of our district and with the 24 eventually going through to the
00560 and the north-south freeway coming in which is going to be through our tennis zones i would not be surprised that we see some sort of sustained growth once it starts over the next 20 25 years so i think it's possible to do that um so we're just starting but we do don't recognize our business partners and we will get plenty of stuff out but but they've stepped up in a very big way and we're pleased with that in terms of our schools we've got a couple different things going on and this is in one case working with one of our business partners we know ironwood banner does a lot with student of the month but they also started uh what's called uh camp scrubs i think i put it on this report it's actually
006camp scrubs and it involves students down at cms where they get a chance to see what the health care industry is all about both in terms of possible jobs and just experience what it's like in healthcare situations we have six students that participated this year and we were able to use the combs educational foundation to help with their there was a cost associated with to help with that cost we'd like to expand there was some issues in some cases because banner still requires masking and therefore some some families chose not to participate on that issue which is fine but so we would hope in future years we would see that program grow also the high school trap clubs trap and skeet club uh became a third straight conference title and the first ever arizona state
007championship that was won again it is still one of those situations where the kids shoot over casa grande and they compete against other schools around the country actually and they just do the the shoot the shoots at their places and then they send in the scores and so we had a junior varsity for female high score for jade green we had junior varsity male high score was warren lamb and then we also had a third place with a steer a smith we had varsity female all three kids uh haley lindstroth alexis fernand and lily van de griff were the top three females for the males it was the same situation with hayden de carlo christopher reese and elle angel and high gun overall was hayden the carlow and then we won the total winning and
008we also had um the all trap team uh those students were on the all trap game as was gary hargis so it's been a really good program for the kids um it's kind of the first one in the in the state but it's been just remarkable the work that's been done and the kids it's it's really a great outlet for a group of kids we do have some kids from other schools that join us just the way the thing is set up and we've talked about it before maybe not everybody in the audience knows it may be the first one in this state but there's the state of minnesota which is where you started there's like 200 000 kids that participate so it's in some states it's tremendous tremendously big other states is just getting
009started but but carl hill runs that program has done a tremendous job and then we have a bunch of the upcoming events that are happening over the next couple weeks real busy as we get ready to start for school and we have some employees here we invited all new employees but many have different schedules and don't live close by um but it is that time of year the last two days we've had new um new teacher orientation and they've been in training all day long um and uh i would say this a thank you to dorsey and the coach team uh they did phenomenal both are instructional owner content coaches um i've said this you can do that i've said this before and i know we heard it from several people but i've said this
010before if if you're not from here um uh when you come here and you see and you're from somewhere else you are impressed by the level of training that takes place it doesn't happen in every single district and that's a testament to to the efforts that they put in we're excited with all of our our new employees coming on board and being part of our family um i'm gonna have them all come up here and introduce themselves they don't know that surprise but that's just because we have so many and i don't know who's going to be here to try to go through a list of of 70 people and have people here not here uh would take a while but if they could come up and stand up here we'll get your picture and
011then just introduce themselves uh where they are i'm going to be teaching at what they're going to be teaching we would appreciate that it's just our way to say welcome um we appreciate you coming to work for us so don't be shy don't don't all run at once yeah come on down it's like the price is right get excited [Applause] just form a line that's all that's all employees certified and classified would have been me [Applause] bye [Applause] very nice thank you guys guys appreciation oh wait if you're from comes middle school i think you're supposed to dance [Laughter] pretty sure i don't know you're gonna get listens for miss ridge if you don't know how miss ridge will demonstrate [Music] oh there you go all right all right so then we have staff recognition
012and what we do this every month we do a staff recognition at uh different school different schools or different departments and since it's the beginning of the year what we start off the new year with is the district office and so we would like to go ahead i'm going to have julie cook come up with one and then i'll have dorsey come up after the second one all right i was gonna let you do it in your last board meeting i brought notes just in case okay i'm in business so we talk numbers i'm gonna throw a few numbers out at you 575 days ago tonight's recipient joined the j.o homes team whoever hired her thank you very much i debated on telling you who i was going to talk about but i really want
013you to know who i'm speaking of so it is my honor tonight to present sofia garcia our payroll supervisor okay so for those of you that don't know sophia started with the district and she has started as an administrative assistant she worked at homes elementary she has worked at home's middle and she has worked at clems high school she did that from 2004 to 2013. wow that's a lot of schools and a lot of people to help she worked for about five months as the grants management administrative assistant here at the do and they thought she was so wonderful that she has spent the last 423 weeks making sure all of us get paid and the reason i point out weeks is because we are paid every other week by one person that's over six
014hundred sure a lot of money yes i'm glad you said that 600 certified and classified staff for their contracts and extra duties are paid every other week she also makes sure that our benefits are paid for blue cross blue shield delta dental vision arizona state retirement she takes care of all of those too she may also make sure that everybody's paid out of the correct funding source that is no small task and when people look at me they think oh well she runs all the money this lady in eight years has distributed million dollars all by herself all by herself she works long hours i can tell you i've been in her office going sofia go home she says no i just gotta check this one last thing she takes it very personally she's very
015dedicated i can't i can't imagine not having her here for 18 years and one day today um she brings all of that knowledge to us she helps my department she's helped other departments she will help with interviews she will help anybody with their paycheck in fact i love the ones when the teachers call up and say hey can you tell me what option i paid to get paid so i know when i'm going to get paid she'll help him with that she helps him with tax forms she helps them with understanding their lead plans anything and everything that deals with somebody's check she's right there and i can tell you i have witnessed firsthand if she doesn't have a piece of information and somebody's paycheck is impacted she is personally upset she wants to make
016sure that everybody gets paid correctly and on time because she realized it's impacting everybody's lives not just their bank account so by granting of the board dr wyman and every person in this district that get the check i want to thank you for everything you do for all of us and i'd like to present you with the blue apple award [Applause] thank you veterans means wise madam president dr wyman and members of the board i am also here to celebrate one of our people um this person is one of our instructional content coaches and i would like to have cindy andrew come up to the podium please as her family comes in as well [Applause] you've even met with them off hours in conversation so she's a leader in our district she's a quiet humble
017leader that takes on her job and responsibilities with grace and i really want to celebrate cindy if you'll join me in that [Applause] i did tell a white lie that they may not let me in the pearly gates for but i did don't i was like can you guys just come because the the teachers the new teachers are coming they really need another familiar face there meanwhile i'm contacting her wonderful family via social media saying hey shh come on in thank you for the new teachers just so you know we don't lie that much they're just little fibs okay we we work with honor here there's just a little something to celebrate congratulations all right you guys ready um do you have any board any any uh board members have a uh update what now
018this is after i don't know well wait hey are you ready do you have anything no okay are we supposed to have something no it's if you guys went to a conference or what i don't know this is just your update i'm just wondering okay all right so we're going to move on before but we go to public comments do we have any public comments okay um if you i'm gonna go ahead because now it's all business and um i know some of them i know this little boy back there said it was boring and i agreed with him um but you guys um are more than welcome to leave now and i'll let you go so that you don't have to like sneak out like and try not to be rude so if you
019want to do it do it you got like two minutes get on it was uh was mr strogam that little boy in the back yeah so boring you are welcome you're well deserved hun thanks for coming everybody all right well we'll move on to oh action items um so do we have any anything in consent agenda that uh i don't know what happened you lost no um it didn't taste hold on um okay does anybody have any questions on the consent agenda no is it not oh wait a minute not working should we put in the minutes that you're talking to yourself okay all right all right um okay can i get a i move um approve the consent agenda as presented hi second all in favor aye aye aye aye motion carries five pro
020all right um 8.1 uh decision and and cons discussion and consideration of approval of adoption of the f u f y 22 23 district expended expenditure budget good evening madam president members of the board dr wyman members of the audience okay apparently they want to start with the last screen there we go okay we are here tonight to talk about the adopted budget arizona revised statute 15 905 says that we have to adopt our expenditure budget no later than july 15th so we were meeting that deadline we proposed and did a hearing notice on june 20th utilizing the preliminary forms however the legislator was still in session at that time or when they closed they added an amendment that allows us to adopt a budget that is higher than what we originally presented based under
021laws 2022 house bill 2866 section 23. that's what we are bringing forward to you tonight upon approval of the adopted budget we will go ahead and get this uploaded into ade by our den by our standard deadline when we did the adopted budget we had specific parameters that were given to us the base level increased 384.62 our transportation support level increased six cents we also received some daa increases for preschool through eighth grade 51.57 9 through 12 56.39 and our high school textbooks we got an additional seven dollars and ninety seven cents all going up that's always good on our group b weighted averages one was for dded miid sld sli and ohi that particular one increased 0.199 and then we received a new one this year and it's for .018 and it's for frpl
022and it's free and reduced poverty level this is an impact from our free and reduced students we don't have any data in the current budget under this category we are still waiting more information from the state and guidance on how we will be funded for that but know that it is coming with the parameters under house bill 2866 section 23 we have to be very specific in what we changed in the pre proposed budget versus the adopted budget that we are bringing here tonight so the next two slides um represent the changes that are on the excel spreadsheet that was attached to the agenda item tonight on page one of eight salaries and benefit columns were increased on page two of eight our special education program types were updated um that was just online one
023unrestricted capital outlay was on page four of eight and we updated the property values on lines two four and six other capital revenue which is displayed on page five of eight we increased the budget columns that were noted on pages four through eight above and lines four through sixteen reflect the changes the next page is seven of eight it's the calculation of the 2023 general ledger budget and almost all of those lines were updated based on the new calculations presented on the first few slides the calculation of the unrestricted capital budget on page eight of eight same thing we had some similar changes based on the new daa that was allocated to us the summary of school adopted expenditure budget it says page one of two and there's also two of two those two pages
024take all of the other pages in the required expenditure budget and summarize them so all of the lines that we mentioned above and the numbers we mentioned in the first slides are all reflected on these all those changes are just summarized on these pages are there any questions about the new adopted budget do you remember when we had to do all this on 13 columnar pads and i'll do it manually i didn't have to do it manually but i will tell you doing some of these excel spreadsheets it is it's tedious yes it is people don't understand you actually have to take every function every indicator and put it in one little cell and then you have to go look for a new number and um yes it's quite tedious i i'm glad that i
025don't have to do it manually any other question the other comment i would make is uh in in passing the state budget they still have not addressed the ael issues so the aggregate expenditure limit so the aggregate expenditure limit is still on the table um it's being reported uh going back to the initial negotiations with the governor's office that there is going to be most likely a special session sometime after the uh primary but before the end of the year so with the current years legislators not the newly elected legislators which is a which is a positive thing it's most likely going to be a one-year fix so there's still going to be issues that are going to have to come with a more long-term fix whether that's a uh goes as a constitutional initiative
026or uh legislature changes that we'll see but you may hear some conversation about the ael and and we can't spend all this money and all that stuff but know that there has been uh discussion and quote unquote promise from the governor that there would be a special session we'll see if that happens but i believe it will and so that ael issue will most likely be solved in the fall but we'll have to wait and see how it goes if there's no questions i'll take a motion i move to approve the adoption of the fiscal year 2022-2023 district expenditure expenditure budget as presented second all 8.2 discussion consideration to authorize expenditure of monies in excess of mno fund the subsection for f1223 this is the item that i bring to you each year or when
027we do a revision and unfortunately i have to read statute language so bear with me per ars 1595 governing board policy dbj and the governing board's approval were requesting that the adopted budget be subject to the authorization of the expenditures of monies budgeted within the m o section of the budget for any subsection within the section in excess of amounts specified in the budget however total expenditures of the m o budget may not exceed the total budgeted amount for the physical year what it's saying is if we've put something in regular education but we need more in special education you're allowing us to take that action throughout the year any question all right make a motion um i move that the governing board authorized the expenditure of monies budgeted within the m o section of
028the budget or any subsection within the section in excess of amounts specified in the budget for fiscal year 20 22 23 as presented what the hey a second that was a long favor hi hi all right motion carries five to zero and the recommendation i did wow okay discussion 8.3 discussion and consideration of approval of qualified evaluators for the j.o combs unified school district for the 22-23 school year this is just an annual uh agenda item that we need to bring to the board and so the names are listed so i would recommend approval as presented i moved to approve the 2022-23 geocomms unified school district qualified evaluators that presented okay a second all in favor aye aye aye motion carries five to zero i was just looking at the list that's what i was
029doing so steven already read those so he was ready to go um discussion 8.4 discussion consideration of approval of 2223 school year board meeting dates so again just an annual thing we bring i know we some sometimes we brought it at january but i try to i try to roll it into this time so that the principals have an idea of what what date i bring it in january just runs january december december by bringing it now we can put in the dates that the schools are going to make their presentation so principals and administration can be prepared for it so so it's the date says as noted the only exception is march which because of spring break we move up one week and then you'll also note that we do have the monday meeting
030for the board retreat in june and so i would recommend approval as presented i don't have any i'll take a motion i move to approve the 2022-2023 governing board meeting schedule as presented a second all in favor aye aye aye motion carries five zero 8.5 discussion consideration of approval of increase to meal prices for 22.23 i didn't think that we had a choice we don't have a choice what was happening in the past the past two years um the meals were free from congress through congress as part of the pandemic that's not uh passed it it's passed in a small section that doesn't apply to us there's some there's some free portions of it to uh uh communities that are in more of need than ours and so therefore we have to go back to
031uh meals uh the meals are set not arbitrarily they're set through a programming section through ade and so this has been run and so we're making recommendation of uh of what the new meal prices would be we have put some communication out to our community already but we have let them know in that communication that is pending your approval if you were to say no we don't like these prices it's too much then we would adjust and resend it back out again they follow the formula so there's no reason it shouldn't be uh within these prices it falls within the range of different school districts well one price might be a little higher but another price might be a little bit lower and and there is inconsistencies in pricing only because again of some of
032the the factors associated with pricing on meals the other issue that is playing a role in here is just uh inflation and the impact on on pricing so the recommendation is to increase breakfast uh paid breakfast again paid versus reduced versus free free there's obviously no change and actually there's no change to the reduced prices either so for the paid prices we would increase by 50 cents for breakfast when we go to lunch we would increase by 30 cents at the elementary level 30 cents at the middle school level and 10 cents at the high school level currently at the uh for lunch there is a different pricing structure so even though it's 30 cents for the elementary and the middle school you can see that elementary goes at 295 a meal and and middle
033school goes at 3 20 a meal so this has been presented through food service so i'd recommend approval as presented there's no questions i'll take a motion i'll move to approve the increase to breakfast and lunch prices as presented all in favor aye aye aye motion carries five to zero okay 8.6 discussion consideration or approval of something meraki switches what is that how do you think redcoat's going to come down and tell you what it's all about we're seeing some guys who are going to work on our wellness plan this year and they're going to get exercise walking up here to present some all the different ideas is that how you say it okay all right i was right then madam president members of the board esteemed colleague um we're looking to um through e-rate
034we're trying to upgrade our our switches right now many of our switches will either be going out of warranty uh this year or next year and the meraki switches give us the ability to manage them a lot easier um instead of having to go behind the scenes and do coding and those types of things it's like a website that we can go to easier to manage my team is small so this will help us um manage the the network going forward so i asked for your approval so i'm going to be draw a picture what is the switch when you say switches i look like a light switch it's how our network is connected between all the sites and getting okay you know to the internet so that's what the switches do that they handle
035all the network capabilities i'm familiar with cisco but i've not heard of meraki how long have they been around and what kind of a track record do they have so meraki is a brand of cisco they're part of cisco so yes about 15 years or so and they have a very good track record sure like i said it makes it managing our network much easier because you're going into like it looks just like a website a web page and then you do all that work that usually is done behind the scenes and you have to know how to program the steps that you need to do to make changes to the network so it makes it easier like even i can do it that's pretty surprising i think yeah i know and um should we
036run into difficulties what kind of support do they offer it's 10-year support for the switches so we'll have that support plus we have consultants that we use throughout the year that can help us as well is so is the amount we're proving the amount on the agenda or the amount submission that the the amount that we're approving is two the 209 five dollars ninety one cents the total amount for the project is six ninety seven forty six thirty seven but e rate picks up the difference so what we put out on a po is just 209 and then the e-rate picks up the remainder if i'm correct no that's correct yes our portion is only the 209 000. i i placed that number in there just so people could see the the benefits of e-rate
037given how much this really cost and if we didn't have any rate what we would be looking at which which would create some sort of issues okay if there's no more questions i'll take a motion i move to approve the purchase of meraki switches through the e-rate program as presented a second 8.7 discussion consideration of approval of the purchase of replacements of replacement student computers for 22.23 so if you remember back in april we came to the board because ecf was going to have another filing window the third window which we did we haven't received a formal approval whether we're going to get approved or not but talking with our e-rate consultants nicely it looks like based on the number of districts that apply during this window exceeds the amount of money they have so
038the fcc is focusing on the needier districts we come in at a 70 discount and the they're stopping it those districts that get an 80 discount so it doesn't look like we're going to get approved for these but the need is still there for us to get new these additional devices because their enrollment's up because we have about 700 chromebooks that are out of warranty and support this year so we want to follow through and have you approve that now there's still always that chance that we could get approved and if that happens then we'll get reimbursed through the fcc but we want to move forward you know if even if we don't get approved we still need to move forward with getting some more devices and this the funding source for this replacement is
039essers dollars if you remember we had talked about using essa's dollars over the next couple years to keep the one-to-one initiative going so this this is not out of daa or anything like that it's coming out of the essex dollars and how much do we still have available to us um we're working on that right now but i'm gonna suggest four million four four four to five million it's significant we've tried to spread it out over four over four or five years i know some some places people are bashing school districts we're not spending all the money but if you're smart you have until september 24 and there's actually a push at washington right now that possibly extend that beyond september 24 and it might go into uh it might go into 25 so we've
040tried to space it out over over time because there's no point in getting total replacement of all the computers this year because then they're all going to go out at the same time so we're trying to phase it in so it may be extended but right now it goes to 24 so we've tried to space out the the 6 million out over out over the full the full time frame what do we do with the 700 chromebook that are no longer supporting we'll probably uh we'll keep some as spares not to use in the classrooms obviously but um because they're out of warranty and then when it comes to testing if they can't because when it means that they're out of warranty and support google won't update them any longer so then it's a security
041risk and then our testing programs and extensions that we use on the chromebooks won't work so we'll have an asparagus in case we need like a staff member needs something temporarily but we'll probably end up disposing most of those that we can't use any longer and when we dispose them we would dispose them through vendors there's a number of vendors out there that would take them for a variety of different reasons and so we'd have to go through procurement and and do a normal uh process on that disposal all right if there's not any more questions i will take a motion i move to approve the purchase of 700 student replacement chromebooks for the 2022-2023 school year from esther's funds as presented a second on favor hi aye motion five to zero all right um
0428.8 discussion consideration of approval changes change orders for the for is that symington elementary and harman elementary drainage project i'm making mr anderson walk up here with the boot on hey you're the one that's that way back there i don't care [Laughter] are you wearing that to get some sympathy or did you really hurt yourself we'll know in a second uh madam president members of the board colleague esteemed colleague paul craig's there so [Laughter] when we entered into this project there was a lot of conditions that from the surface looked like there was a drainage system but but as we started digging doing destructive measures to get down that we found a lot of crushed um piping uh there was transitions or code those type of things that we found we needed to once we
043opened it up not do it the right way um so that's what the reflection is we did armington or harman uh we didn't have any prints to go off of a lot more i've seen conditions that were anticipated that their allowances remember we had allowances on both of them and that one was bigger so it covered some of it it opened any other question any questions i'm just curious if we're fighting this at two of our schools what about the rest of them are there issues with drainage at them we don't know we we chose these two schools were chosen because they had significant uh issues drainage problems during the summer the other schools we have not seen that um i think any time you talk about construction that's 10 years old um you start
044to run into more and more there's there's some possibilities on what took place when the construction took place be careful how i say this but do understand that most of the construction that took place between 2005 and 2010 was uh sfb funding and in that particular cycle they were they did not spend quite as much money as they're probably spending now some of these and so therefore uh the amount of money that was used to build some of the schools that time frame was not as great as it should be and that was our primary funding source so there there may be some other issues that we deal with as we move forward some shortcuts may have been taking this kind of i don't know that it's sure i don't know what a shortcuts but
045but they did not fund the full cost of what it would take to build a school so if you go into um i can remember when homes high school was built this was going on um you didn't get at that time they weren't funding lighting or parking lot they weren't funding as much parking lot space as they were they were not funding uh the necessary gym space so there was just less funding available and so therefore the architects builders were forced to make do with budget that was there uh to provide that that information you know that was there so there's more money available nowadays uh than there was in those days but but it was the the budget budgets were a lot tighter back then so i would not be surprised as we age
046that we might not be smothered hey there's no walk there's no other questions i'll take a motion i moved to approve the change order for simon elementary and harman elementary drainage projects as presented a second all in favor aye aye aye motion carries 5-0 8.9 discussion consideration for approval of agreement with the international alliance group iago so besides the fact that we save money on health we don't have to contribute to the retirement are these teachers that when they get hired put on our regular salary schedule so for example if they have continuing education or years of experience they will get those benefits when they come to work for us what about um i assume you you interview them so hopefully there won't be a language barrier then good question i'm not sure if i
047missed it but if it's the same process then their contract is just for a year that's what i wasn't sure about right i mean it's an individual one-year contract but with their j-1 visas right for three years multiple years that's what i thought okay yeah just a comment and i've been i've become very familiar with this program because i spent a lot of time in school districts uh particularly in new mexico they've been using this program for a very long time now to fill teacher shortages that they've had there in that state and um in their case uh most of the j-1 visas teachers have come from the philippines uh or from india and um my experience with that has been that most of those teachers that come over are usually master's degree um they've
048had many many years of teaching experience they're latching on to this opportunity to come to america and to kind of experience america too but the reason it's a cultural exchange is because after a certain number of years then they're required to go back to their home country for at least two years to share back with their own people what they've learned from america before they are allowed any other visas to come back to the united states for any reason and many of them do that and then come back to united states to continue teaching at schools here in the united states because they found they enjoyed living here in the united states but um it is one way to to fill teacher shortage needs and it would be teach and it would definitely be there
049there are teachers who have a lot of experience generally speaking and and um they're very well qualified there's many times that the teaching style or the the in other countries is sometimes a little different so many of the teachers from the philippines for example that i've worked with students in the philippines honor and respect their teachers they actually bow to their teachers every day every morning before they come in and as they leave they um and they have classrooms of up to 50 to 60 students who all sit quietly and listen and just follow all directions so um when they come to the united states it's a little bit of a culture shock for them yeah uh the idea of you know cooperative learning and things like that but they but every all the teachers
050that i've worked with my experience is that very intelligent very easily adaptable and um it's a good opportunity it could be a very very good opportunity to fill holes that we have and then that's the real reason why we're moving forward now where we have in the past uh the the formation of the uh having to sponsor someone from overseas is onerous on a school district therefore we're we're not interested in that because this is a cultural exchange and it's through the state department and the the iag they're the sponsor they pick up the responsibility the sponsorship and then it's just an agreement with us so the reason we're looking into this is because we're not responsible for sponsorship had we been responsible for spartan sponsorship i wouldn't be bringing this to the other um
051a lot of the districts where i've seen this happen they have not had anywhere near the support they don't have dorsey's they don't have um it just it's just not the same and which is part of the reason why they hire people like me to come help train them um but uh that's but because of what you said i mean it's i think because of the support structure we have here that this program could be since i've been thinking about it i mean quite very successful my question would be though in regards to his in my experience with um the same scenario is there is definitely a cultural challenge especially when it comes to classroom management or instructional strategies and that becomes very taxing often on the administration on the on the coaching team and
052i guess my question is as you explore this and how you want to move forward with it is what are we doing as a district to help because just i think that when we're having individuals come from other countries and we do have that cultural shift when they're here in our district what are we doing to help them prepare to make that transition giving them those supports that they need because them just participating in just a regular new teacher orientation i don't know if that would necessarily be enough and i just hope that we would be able to provide dorsey with the support for her team whether it's additional days or whatever it is to help their team be successful in supporting these new teachers okay i would anticipate that the soonest we would see
053any of one of these teachers through would be a month but it could be upwards of two to four months uh if it's from mexico or latin america it's sooner if it's from the philippines it'll be three to five months so in some cases we're even anticipating that we might be looking at people that would start january so we could um be hiring people through this program anytime during the academic year not just at the beginning of the year okay so if we have an opening and someone qualifies we could put them in as opposed to a long term i feel like if we move forward with this i would like to have um i would like to have dorsey's input on how this is gonna work like how what like how it's working what
054she's gonna need that sort of thing i mean i'd like to hear from her about that yeah because i mean if this is something i mean if if we do this for a year and it doesn't look like it's working out yeah we're not bound we're not bound the agreement allows us to get out as we need i i think the pieces you have to remember irrespective of where people are from the reality the situation is you get good and bad teachers whether they're overseas or out of asu not not u of a but out of asu and so therefore you run you run the the the risk of a young teacher coming out of one of the colleges with struggles in in uh classroom management just as you would potentially here so i think
055the piece is as they come in as we work with them we'll make the necessary adjustments uh based on what we get we have to get them in first i think but mark looked at the number of districts in the state that are using these guys and it's significant so so it's not like we're the only guys in town they may have multiple people that are going after them and so um we may end up getting one or two of these and that's all we get or we may end up getting a half a dozen but so just because we're moving forward with this depending they have a finite number i think they have 5 400 but if you have uh 50 districts going after 400 in the state of arizona this same company is
056probably working across the country so so it just gives us a potential option but it doesn't suggest that we will or will not have them but we want to at least explore this because we know we don't have applicants in many of the jobs right now as we speak questions promotion i moved to approve the agreement with international alliance group known as iag as presented second all in favor um and discussion consideration of approval agreement with the metro fire and security for 22-23 school year under one gpa contract bob it worked i'll take care of it no it's okay i saw you struggling walking up here see it worked for him it doesn't work this is not rural metro it's different companies see that i just make sure you know i thought metro and you
057wanted to be sure no i knew that i just want to make sure you guys knew any other questions comments all right i'll take a motion um i move to approve the agreement with metro fire and security for annual fire safety inspections under 1p or one gpa contract number 21-0 as presented second all in favor aye aye motion carries okay so now we're at any future agenda items anything anyone all right i'm gonna make a motion to adjourn at 705. a second all in favor she carries five to zero that that screamed you must have won a bet going on which one who won all right oh you need to dance then [Laughter] that's right i guess what's
