Class of 2026 and guests, it has been a pleasure to be your principal this year and to have the opportunity to stand here tonight with our families,
friends, and faculty. I'd like to introduce the following guests in attendance in attendance with us today. MUSD Governing Board President, Ms. Katherine McCronous, Governing Board Vice President, Ms. Kathy Raymond, Governing Board Members, Mr. Tom Carlson, Mr. Roy Alexander, and Mr. Hunter Holt. Superintendent of the Marana Unified School District, Dr. Dan Streeter, Senior Staff Members, Mr. Joshua Bain, Mr. Thomas Bogart, Mr. Mark Gallegosky, Ms. Denise Linsalata, and Ms. Kristen Reedy. I also want to recognize our Mountain View associate principals, Ms. Christina Coleman, Ms. Megan Montanaro, and Mr. David Romero. Special thanks as well to all the Mountain View staff and students who worked behind the scenes to bring this ceremony to life. In particular, I'd like to thank Ms. Patricia La Pruda, Ms. Jessica Hassler, Ms. Cecil Reyes, Ms. Cheryl Prosser, and our incredible student council
led by Ms. Heather Anderson, and our National Honor Society volunteers led by Ms. Maria Longo. To our teachers, both past and present, and to every parent, coach, grandparent, family member, friend, and supporter who helped guide our students along the way, thank you. Your encouragement, sacrifices, and belief in them helped make this moment possible. Now, we'll hear from four accomplished members of the class of 2026. Our student body president, Cassandra Aviles, will begin today's celebration with our opening remarks. Good evening, family, friends, faculty, and most importantly, the class of 2026. My name is Cassandra Aviles, and I am honored to stand before you as your student body president. First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to the amazing teachers, staff, friends, and family here to support your graduates. Lastly, I would like to
congratulate all my classmates for pushing through these four unforgettable years. If someone had told 10-year-old Cassie that one day she would be speaking in front of her graduating class, she probably would have had a panic attack. Standing here in front of you all, I could not feel more grateful for this opportunity. It has been said that the average person complains between 15 and 30 times a day. We complain about being tired, having homework, going to practice, or waking up early for school. But what I've come to realize is that there are people all around the world who would give anything to have the opportunities that we sometimes take for granted. The opportunity to learn, to receive an education, to build a future, or even to simply to walk into a classroom each day. Especially during
these dark and difficult times in the world, I've learned the importance of stepping back and appreciating what we do have. Because the truth is life moves fast. It feels like just yesterday we were nervous freshmen trying to figure out where our classes were. And now, somehow, we're sitting here in our caps and gowns preparing to take our next steps into adulthood. Of course, high school was not always easy. There were moments of stress, uncertainty, and failure. But even through those difficult moments, we continued moving forward, and that is something to be proud of. As we enter this next chapter of our lives, I hope we carry gratitude with us. Gratitude for the people who stood beside us. Gratitude for the lessons we learned, even the hard ones. Gratitude for even the people who doubted us
or tried to bring us down because because they gave us the strength to rise even taller. And gratitude for the opportunities ahead of us. I would like to give my own gratitude to my sister, Clarissa, for being my built-in best friend and the best role model any girl can ask for. And to my best friend, Emsley, who has stuck by my side through all the ups and downs. I could not have done this high school journey without you. And to all my family, thank you for being there through it all. And to the two people who sacrificed everything to give me everything, my mom and dad. Thank you for your endless love, hard work, and the countless sacrifices you made so I could have the opportunities you may not have had yourselves. No words could
ever express how grateful I am to have parents as strong, selfless, and loving as you. The world we are stepping into is far from perfect. There will be setbacks and moments that test us. But I truly believe that our generation is capable of creating meaningful change. We are passionate, resilient, determined, and have voices that deserve to be heard. I want to recognize the generations of immigrants and hardworking families who helped build this com- community we grew up in. Many came to this country searching for opportunity, stability, and a better future for their children. Their sacrifices and determination helped shape the schools we attend, the neighborhoods we call home, and the opportunities we have today. So, whatever your next step is, remember this. Success is not measured by how quickly you have everything figured out. It
is measured by your willingness to keep growing and moving forward. So, as we step into the future, let us do so with grateful hearts and passion for what you believe in. As Mr. Worldwide says, "Every day above ground is a great day." Congratulations, class of 2026. Thank you. And now, to your senior class president, my best friend, Emsley Hudacheck. Good evening, everyone. I'm Emsley Hudacheck, and I'm honored to be your class president. Most of us were born in 2007 or 2008. That makes it sound like a lifetime ago, but in reality, it wasn't. Yet, in that short time, the world has changed dramatically. We, as the class of 2026 are the new generation. We are all growing up in a time where technology has advanced from when our parents were right here in our position
turning their tassels from right to left. We are surrounded by artificial intelligence, self-driving cars, and a future that presents excitement mixed with unease at times. Our generation is consumed by social media, thus we could be out of touch with the outside world. It has distorted the way we see ourselves and each other. We are consumed with appearances, streaks, followers, and approval from people who often don't truly know us. And in all that noise, it becomes easy to lose sight of who we really are. Comparison truly is the biggest thief of joy. This year, I decided to block out the world's voices so I could focus on God's word. I set a goal for myself to fast social media. When you're used to constant entertainment, silence feels uncomfortable. So, the first few days were challenging. By
the end of that fast, I was a better version of myself and I had my priorities a lot more aligned. I became more present, more grounded in my faith, and more aligned with the person I truly wanted to become. This is how I want our class to be living, in a world filled with peace and security in ourselves and not in security and isolation. I hope all of us learn to use technology as a tool, not as a source of identity or validation. That we learn how to disconnect from the digital world long enough fully to live in the real one. People sometimes label our generation as screenagers, saying technology has raised us. Technology did not raise us. Our lives did. Our experiences, our struggles, and the lessons we've learned along the way did. Our
parents raised us staying up late worrying about us. Grandparents taught us resilience. Teachers and coaches pushed us. Friends stood by us. They all showed us how to be compassionate, empathetic, and nurturing. Our parents have taught us stay to say I love you to one another or te amo or like my dad says, "Mid wiche." Which means I love you in Czech Republic. That is what shaped us. When I think about the people who stood stood by me through my anxiety, my darkest days, and my greatest accomplishments, I think of my parents, my siblings, my grandparents, my cousin Rosie, and my best friend Cassandra. The list goes on because I'm fortunate enough to be surrounded by love every day and I couldn't be more grateful. All of our different walks of life is what developed us
into the independent, strong, resilient young adults we are today. That is the real human connection that has formed our groundbreaking generation. Not fake artificial intelligence that doesn't even know the difference between a hand or fingers. You know, when I was told I had to write this graduation speech, almost everyone gave me the same advice. Just use chat GPT. And honestly, I could have. But after the last 12 years of hard work, failure, growth, heartbreak, memories, and perseverance, every person sitting here deserves something real, something human. A speech written not by AI, but by someone who lived these experiences alongside you. As we step into this next chapter of our lives, we must remember that AI and technology may be powerful and can imitate knowledge, but they can never replace the authenti- authenticity of human emotion,
human struggle, and human art. So, as we leave here today, I'll leave you with this final thought. Don't just chase success in the digital world and lose sight of what got us to this place today. Chase meaning, chase truth, be present, be kind, be fearless. Be fearless enough to think for yourself and most importantly, never let the digital version of yourself become more important than the real one. Congratulations, class of 2026. Thank you. It is my pleasure to introduce our salutatorian, Rhiannon Plunkett. I want you all to close your eyes and imagine a hiking trail. It can be as clear as you want with perfect weather and all the stamina you need to make it up the hill. The sun will shine bright, but it won't burn. The breeze will be soothing, not blowing pollen
in your face. No cuts, no scrapes, no bruises, no falls, just a clear path up to the top of the mountain or whatever destination you imagine. That image sounds nice, doesn't it? But that's really all it is, an image from your imagination. The real paths that we take aren't easy or perfect. They're difficult and tricky. And by the end of the hike, you're not the same as you were before it. We all imagined a perfect path when we entered high school. We thought we'd keep the same friends, be interested in the same things, but none of us realized how pivotal those years would be in shaping who we are today. Our paths are all different. Some of us had more greenery while others had rain and sharp rocks. Ultimately, all of us here in this
room have reached the end of this path. Our diplomas are the same, we're wearing the same caps and gowns, and we're here in this space sharing this incredible moment together. I really am proud of everyone who pushed through this hike when your legs got tired, when you ran out of water, when it started to rain, or when the sun got too hot. Your hard work and perseverance got you to this point, and it is your privilege to feel emotions and hardships because it means you're alive, and it means that you got through hard things and still reached the top. Some don't. Not all hikers stay the course. Not all students graduate. Some get tired halfway through. Some stop to care for others. Some aren't fortunate enough to get the resources they need. And some never
get the chance to finish. There have been 1,680 school shootings just in the past 5 years. Children who cannot comprehend such violence are taught how to hide along the wall away from doors and windows until it's automatic. Parents worried if their kids will come home from school every day put bulletproof linings in their backpacks. Teachers decide in life or death situations to give their lives for your children, leaving behind their own family and future. This is not okay. All should be able to learn without fear. Education is essential to developing and bettering society. Even if we had to be afraid along the way, we made it to the top of the mountain, fortunate to never have met this terrible fate. Remember this fear, so that we can be a part of the solution. Create a
world where kids don't have to worry about not coming home from school, where their classes don't go silent for a second after a loud noise in the hallway, where they don't have to think about where their classroom is relative to the exits or where their seats in a classroom are relative to the doors and windows. We need to create a world where high school graduates can look back without memories of hiding under desks, anxious and terrified, waiting to know if they walk away. We did walk away. Thus, it is us to make the path greener, provide shelter from the rain, and remove the sharp rocks where we can, so that after this, they have a better, safer, and easier experience. My favorite hikes were with other people. I'd like to thank everyone who walked this
trail with me. My family who supported me, especially my parents and those who can make it here today. My friends who always helped who were always there for me, like Daphne, Rebecca, and Sophia who helped me write this speech. And Sam, my competition for salutatorian. And my teachers who never gave up hope for their students' success, like Holly and Longo. So, think of the people who walked with you. Please take a moment to thank them. Remember, keep moving forward on your path, even if the road gets bumpy. Even if you're hiking solo, others have traveled this path before you, and you will not be the last. So, along your way, keep paving the path for those who come behind you. Congratulations to the class of 2026. I can't wait to see all that you do.
It's truly been a privilege to be a part of this with you all. Thank you. It is now my privilege to introduce our valedictorian, Amin Barakat Abduljawad. Hello Ameen, here is your 3-minute valedictorian speech with no m dashes. Um No, I didn't mean to say that. Sorry Amsley, only a little AI was used. No, um but seriously, tonight is a celebration of hard work, growth, and opportunity, and I'd like to commemorate it by looking at our past and future from a more personal lens. We, as Americans, often like to think of ourselves as extremely unique. And I can tell you, as a Palestinian-American, in many ways that is true. America is truly a unique and exceptional country. In America, I don't have to worry about the tap water giving me diarrhea. I don't have to
worry about my home being bombed or accidentally stepping into enemy territory. And growing up between these two very different realities forced me to question how. How does America get to enjoy all of these luxuries? And to answer this, I just began thinking critically every time I bought something. So, when I went to Chipotle and I ordered my regular burrito, extra chicken, brown rice, pico de gallo, I started wondering, where do all of these tomatoes and onions actually come from? And I learned that most of it is tied to immigrants who work under dangerous conditions with little pay. Then, I thought about my phone, and I read about how the cobalt used in batteries is often linked to mining operations in the Congo. Operations while where workers labor in conditions so dangerous and exploitative that is
often called modern-day slavery. And how much can even be said about gasoline? I've seen the news. I know what we've done to Iraq and Venezuela when it comes to oil reserves. And like many people, when I heard about all of these horrible things committed in the name of my comfort, my first thought was okay, this is terrible, but what am I supposed to do about it? I I my own problems. I don't have free health care, like much of my generation, I don't think I'll ever own a home, and it cost me $30 just in gas to get to this venue. And for a while and I realized that in many ways our lives are paradoxical. We are both the exploiters and the exploited. The wolf and the sheep. And for a while that realization
was crushing. Because how do you confront a system you are both benefiting from and trapped inside of? But eventually I realized something important. If it truly is one system, then it is not made up of separate struggles. It is made up of connected ones. That means the exploitation overseas, the struggle here at home, the poverty, the soul-crushing feeling that you are trapped no matter what you do, they are just different expressions of the same oppression. That means that my plea to you tonight is not about self-sacrifice. It is about alignment. Because there is no real difference between a worker in Arizona and a worker in the Congo. The immigrant harvesting crops and the student drowning in debt are not enemies. They are people trapped in different levels of the same system. And if we're all
trapped in the same system, then we're all equally capable of changing it. Because the moment we stop believing these struggles are separate is the moment we start to see where pressure can actually be applied. So apply pressure. Join a union. Go to a protest. Start boycotting. And as former Congressman John Lewis once said, get in good trouble, necessary trouble. And help redeem the soul of America. Because it is our blind following of unjust laws and our inability to rebel against political systems that got us into this mess, but it is our fearlessness, our empathy, and our community that will get us out of it. And remember, none of us got here alone, and none of us will leave here alone. Thank you to our truly exceptional teachers and staff, our families, our friends, and everyone
who supported us. Special shout out to my wonderful mom and teta who I could not have gotten here without. So, wherever life takes us after tonight, I hope we do more than build careers. I hope we build solidarity with one another, and I hope we leave this school understanding that the world we inherited is not the world we are required to preserve. So, free Palestine, free Sudan, free the Congo, and free all the workers of the world. I believe in us. We can do it. We are the class of 2026, and we will change the world. I mean, would you like to make this speech less political to appeal to a wider audience? No, ChatGPT. No, I would not. Have a great night, everybody. Thank you so much. Well, thank you so much, speakers. To
the class of 2026, growth often begins in the moments we did not plan for. And class of 2026, over the last 4 years, I have watched you grow, and I've had the opportunity to grow alongside you. You will always hold a special place to me as your freshman year and my first year as principal began together. I have watched you grow alongside a campus that has quite literally changed around you. Buildings have changed colors, office spaces have moved, and you've excelled while at the same time we built a new roof over our heads. At times, it may have felt unfinished, uncertain, or inconvenient. And in many ways, that mirrors high school itself. I have watched this class achieve in remarkable ways this year. From our boys tennis team bringing home a state championship to a
historic run for softball to a creation of an e-sports program with amazing success. And much like this year's yearbook theme, blueprints, your class helped design what Mountain View became. You helped shape the culture of this school. You brought ideas forward. You challenged us to think differently. You stretched yourselves, your teachers, and each other. And through it all, you brought joy. What stands out most about this class is its integrity. It's not perfect, but you have such a high level of integrity in the way you support one another, how you carried yourselves, and continue moving forward even when things didn't go as planned. Because the truth is plans change. Growth happens when you adapt, when you rebuild, and when you keep going anyway. And that is what I will remember most about you. Not just what
you accomplished, but who you became in the process. So, as you leave Mountain View, continue building. Build lives that reflect your values. Build relationships that matter. Build communities that make people feel seen. And build futures that make you proud. On behalf of the entire Mountain View High School staff and administration, congratulations, Class of 2026. It is now time to present our graduates. As we begin announcing names, I ask that we honor each graduate by allowing their name to be heard clearly. Please celebrate with respectful applause so every student has their moment to shine. The students' names will be read by the Mountain View staff members selected by the senior class. We will begin with the top 10 graduates read by Ms. Maria Longo. Followed by the full list of graduating seniors read by Mr. Stephen
