Second at 7 p.m. Please rise for the pledge of allegiance and moment of silence to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. Roll call, please. >> Amber Bracket >> here. >> Andrew Le >> here. >> Emry here. >> John M >> here. >> Heather Ariel Roberts >> here. >> Baker here. William, >> Mr. President, we have a >> Okay. So, um, with conditions and presentation. Yep. Um just wanted to Yeah. superstar uh superstars of the month our superstar student uh Carly Helensky not not able to attend tonight or um was wasn't sure if she was going to make it or not. Um but uh definitely some very uh cool things she's done. She was uh

finished first at the as uh in the area of mixed media at the Congressional Art Competition. That's the first time anybody in Alanak has finished first in that competition. Uh, which is a pretty big honor. We also have another student uh that we're going to that was going to be here tonight and we're going to honor in August. So, I might see if Carly could stop back down here. It was for the same competition. So, maybe we'll see if we can um get them in there. But, yeah, pretty cool stuff. And uh Mrs. gooseex moving them along and challenging them to do uh you know some of these competitions that maybe in the past we hadn't done. So that's a pretty cool accomplishment. Um our superstar employee did decide to join us tonight which is

wonderful. um Jill Martin and I and I'm just um thinking back of all the years of working with Jill and having her uh over at Alan Cal and all the work she did as a pair professional before becoming secretary and um some of the things that Jill's uh fellow employee said about her. Uh 30 years in education. This is from Mr. Mrose. Uh, I can state without reservation that I have not had the privilege of working with a secretary who exemplifies excellent more than Jill Martz. Smart and consistently provides outstanding support to students, parents, and staff, carrying out her responsibility with professionalism, efficiency, and a positive demeanor. She is proactive, highly skilled, and exceptionally dependable in all aspects of her work. Her dedication and commitment make her an essential member of our school community and

a driving force in the daily operation of our build of our building. I am deeply appreciative of her service and contributions as we all. So Jill, we really do appreciate all you do. Joe's become a very welcoming face here at the high school and certainly um a state really a staple in our whole prosec >> I have to agree because I've worked with Jill for things I've needed and and she's always there, always helpful, always with a smile, and I was very excited to see your name on here. So, congratulations. Much appreciated. >> Thanks, Jill. >> You too. >> Okay. Um, so we'll move on to our consent agenda items. Anyone motion? I'll make a motion the board of education approves all consent agenda items including agenda minutes, personnel items, treasures report, and bills listed

items A through C. >> Support any discussion? >> Um, just wanted to point out in case you got confused, uh, Kelly Beas is on as a layoff and on as a recall. uh she was on our layoff list and due to some other staffing changes, she was uh the first on the recall in the area of high school English. So, we were able to retain her and so she before she really could get used to being laid off. She was back working again. So, we'll have Kelly a board next year. >> And then are we still looking for a math teacher then at the high school to >> res to fill that? >> She was she was not a math teacher. I talk to >> I Yeah, I Yeah, Jamie is English and that was

Yeah, just Whoops. There. Yep. Jamie Stewart was English. Yeah. Sorry about that. >> Yeah, I was just curious. >> Heather did point that out to me earlier as she waiting for that. >> Okay, great. >> Any more discussion? >> All in favor say I. I. >> Any opposed? Okay, motion carries. Um information items. The first thing in the agenda is the grant 6 to8 ELA one-year renewal. >> Yep. I'm going to turn over to Melissa for A and B. That's kind of both in her her run there. >> So, this is just that one-year renewal for think circa. Um, we piloted last year and we piloted the full year and after the end of the full year, we decided, you know what, we instead of expanding it further, we want to do another year and

still collect the data in grades six through eight. We're going to add in some nth grade classes as well to get that high school feel before we do a huge adoption of 6 through 12. So, we're just looking for a one-year renewal on that and that's why um really wanting to make sure it's fitting our mark. It is very rigorous. So, um which is good, but we're trying to make sure that it's exactly what we need and where we're moving next. So, it's just a a one year to be cautious before we take on curriculum adoptions are so expensive that >> making sure it's the right one for us. And B, the professional development advisory committee, the state of Michigan allows us to use um three professional development days as student days. In order to

do that though, you have to have a professional, what do they call it? the professional development advisory committee consisting mostly of teaching staff where we sit and we discuss what that professional development is going to be um and also some parents on there administration. So it's a committee where we sit and discuss what are those three. So currently we have three district days set aside. One before school starts August 27th, one on election day and one on Martin Luther King Day. And so those are the three days we're hoping to count as student days, but um this is it has to be a board approved committee and then it goes from there. So there's a bunch of other pieces that go to with it, but the first step is a board approved committee. So you

should have the names in within your package. >> Okay, thank you. Um the next one is the MASB award of distinction. Nicole has received the level three award of distinction from MASB. The level three award is uh to a member who's completed all the levels one and two total of four advanced 200300 level classes and a minimum of 28 educational credits. >> Very good. Thank you. >> And then two administrative reports. Mr. >> Yes. So, uh some uh spring recognitions from uh from our sports team. First of all, from track, uh Jenna Dobson up fourth in the state in the 400 meter and also set the school record. So, congrats to to Jenna. Michael Kennel was all state in softball. uh baseball won district that they were district champs. Uh Zach Witherspoon and Colin Grove

were all state academic for baseball. Uh Jackson Schaefer and Cole Thaylor were all state baseball honorable mention. And uh Emma Josephoski was all state honorable mention for soccer. Uh so congratulations to all the our athletes on a great job this spring. And then just a lot of things at the end when you get to the end of the year, there's a lot of stuff going on. Um and and I thought all of it went really well. We had a couple new things at the middle school level. We had a field day for the first time. Had out there. Uh Mrs. Matthew put a lot into that with a lot of parent support and it ended up being a really nice day out there and the kids had a good time. Um and then this year

the first time we did an honors program honoring all the grade levels and we thought that went really well. We did discuss afterwards there are some kinks we want to work out for next year and some ways we want to improve it. But we thought it was a good start and we again we thought it was good that we're recognizing all students. And then finally was graduation. Again, we thought it went really well. Uh um again, it's it's about a half an hour. It's quick. It's the parents love it and and again, I I cannot thank enough uh the secretaries, Jill, Melinda, Pam, so all the custodians, all the maintenance, uh everybody jumping in and doing their part to make sure everything works out right. So, again, they did a fantastic job with everything at

the end of the year. Um and then we're just kind of back at it and get ready for the fall. Thank you. come to the stage. >> So, we had a great end of the year. A lot of field trips, educational ones. Um, the kids enjoyed it a lot. And we had our second grade students hosted first grade students on a tour of Algangquin um classroom visit and then they were able to show them the ropes on the playground for quite some time. So, that's always like fun and cute to see the kids over there getting ready. Um, we had a field day. We did it a little bit different this year. We did a full day field day just to get in all the things because the students were only getting about like seven

or eight minutes per station if we did it on one of the half days. So, we did a trial run. It went really well. Um, our second graders still participated with Millside though. And we also had a buy one get one book fair bear right at the end of the year. So, the kids are able to load up on some books for their summer vacation. And just a big huge thank you to PTO still for paying. They're a very small group, but they still paid for all of our field trips, um, busing, field day stuff, and anytime we ask them for anything, they're always more than willing to help us. So, we really appreciate them. Our sixth graders had a great sixth grade recognition put on by the sixth grade staff. There were a couple

special awards. The Shamansky award was presented to Harlo Luke and Blake Hunt. And also the Fraternal Order of Police award was went to Emma Ranger this year. Um, summer school starts Tuesday, July 7th. It will be uh K through 5 at Alonquinn. We're going to go for four weeks, so it'll conclude right at the end of July. And the custodians are already working super hard. They have all the rooms ready for summer school cleaned down and then they come back and do another sweep of those rooms again right before school starts. And looking ahead, Elangquin uh and Millside are going to host our open houses on August 26 from 5 to 6:30. That's it. >> Thank you, Mrs. Belly. >> So, we had lots of extended learning beyond the classroom as well. Our first grade

visited Upland Hills kindergarten was exploring Pine River Nature Center. TK checked out a new spot in Port Heron this year, Discovery City, and they had some pretty rave reviews. And then ECSC also went to a new spot. They were at Flames Gymnastics and really enjoyed that as well. During our final PLC meeting of the year, our staff came together to review our ELA data and celebrate growth. We also took some time to reflect and start setting goals for areas of focus for the upcoming school year. Um, early in June, our students enjoyed a special barbecue lunch. It was kind of a nice change of pace. Miss Jeie had us all set up to eat outside for a perfect picnic. She was also manning the grill for us. And then Miss Tracy and her kitchen team

did a great job preparing a nice meal for us. We had those opportunities to support our upcoming transitions. Like Mrs. stage said the second graders hosted our first graders at Algangquin, but our kindergarten students also had the chance to be leaders for our GSRP students when they came over to visit as well. Cool. >> Um yeah, kind of a nice annual tradition to give them that kindergarten readiness perspective. Um our field day was a huge success. We had a variety of activities to encourage cooperation and problem solving and competition. Miss Tracy was a huge support for that, making sure everything was organized. She took care of all of our parent volunteers. The PTO was very supportive as well. Um, and we had a really large number of parent volunteers this year more than usual, which

was really, really nice to see. And I think everybody coming together really kind of played a vital role in making it fun and positive for all of our students. So, we're hoping to keep that momentum going even in the fall and welcoming families in for a variety of reasons, not just the big fun day at the end of the school year. Um, we also had our classroom celebration. So, each class had families in so they could highlight student learning, their growth, their achievements, look back at fun memories, and funny pictures. And everybody had a really nice time with that. Um, and then last but not least, we've kind of started a new tradition. We did this last year, and again this year, our first grade teacher, Miss Bernal, has an ice cream cart, like the

oldfashioned pedal cart with the umbrella, and she was gracious enough to bring it out, and she pedled around the loop, and all the kids got a chance to get it from the ice cream cart. She had the music going and everything. So, just kind of a nice sweet ending to the school year. Um, and that's it. We're looking forward to open house in August and already planning for the fall ahead. >> Great. Thank you, Sanders. >> Well, it's been a busy end of the year. Um, the portrait of a graduate committee and group, um, they're excited to share that the portrait of a graduate roll out and district branding are ready to launch this fall. So, we started with an end of the year training for just our staff to make sure that they were

up to speed um, on that. And we're also looking at getting t-shirts with the branding and stuff for all of the staff to have for that first day of school and that launch. Um so be ready to see a lot more information coming out to the community on that initiative. We talked about the professional development advisory committee. Um we did a first start like beginning ideas thrown out there. So the committee has met once just to kind of get some ideas and we'll continue that throughout the time as well. the district wellness committee met. Um so this was a group of members from Chartwell, from our physical education staff, our nurse um administration. So we all and our health teachers, we met to take a look at and begin review our old plan and begin

planning for the upcoming school year, including several fresh ideas to continue supporting our student and staff wellness. So that was exciting to hear from them. They have some great ideas. The administrators took a day last week and really met to start planning for the upcoming school year as well. Key focus areas include professional development priorities, the growing role of um AI and schools and what that might look like. Michigan just adopted the guidelines. You'll see that come come out the state of Michigan. And um improving title one and at risk documentation and compliance. So really just going over some of those federal things as well that we need to make sure that we're keeping track of the dyslexia law. Um we begin training on that next year. We have several K through3 teachers willing to

pilot the state approved screener. Um it's only for K through three. So, we have, I think, 2, four, six, seven teachers that are willing to take a look at the three um screening tools and give some feedback and see how that goes. So, we make sure we're going to go with the right one. So, I'm excited about that. We're going to do that the fall semester next year. Resa collaboration. We continue to partner with our RHA consultants to plan and strengthen our professional development initiatives. So, Minotaurel will be coming next um year to help us with some thinking classroom student engagement ideas districtwide, as well as Miranda um coming down for ELA to help us with those dyslexia law requirements as well. As a district, the district's transitioning to a new online learning and credit

recovery platform. So, we're moving to subject.com. Several neighboring districts are already using this platform and report that the content is more engaging for students and offers stronger safeguards against cheating compared to previous systems. So, we're really looking forward to um giving that a fresh new look. And this is a busy time for me just with the curriculum. Um we finalized curriculum purchases, instructional resources, and preparations to sure everybody's ready for a successful year. I want to give a shout out to Evan Humphrey. Him and I have been working together quite a bit to make sure that we have a really good back-end rostering system for everything that we're doing. So, we're looking at using Clevver um to make sure that all of our stuff is rostered correctly and that students and staff have access to

things easily. So, thank you. um board reports. I have um a few things then um Alan I met with our MASB regional person uh and we talked about um some needs of our board and with how MASB can come and help um whatever. So they we are looking for them to come out before our July meeting. It's not set in stone yet, but uh we talked about because July is a really short meeting. So it would we're going to have like a workshop. It's going to be on like governance. Um and uh so that would be like from 6:00 to 7:00 and then we'll have our 7:00 meeting. Um so look for that to come out and um make plans for that. That would be before our July board meeting. Um and also just a

reminder that the MASB summer institute is going on from August 7th through 9th. That's in Kalamazoo. If you're interested, talk to Janna as soon as possible because those tend to fill up. Um, so that's something I got reported for us. Anyone else? >> All right. Now, >> um, just a few things for you. Um, summer projects, if you on your way out, take a walk down toward the end. They have started our floors. They are It's going to be bright in here. I can tell you that it's like a crazy difference. And um, but they just started ideas um, hitting the hallways where we'll be doing some summer school stuff. And um I think once they get rolling, they're you know they figure a week or so kind of what we're hearing a week or

two in each building and they'll go right from here right on to Millside and right over to Elangwood. So they're they're going to be moving pretty quick. But pretty exciting because I think it's going to um really you'll see the difference. I mean these like I said these floors are supposed to be white. So um see how they look when they're all said and done. Um they've already started some uh some of the seal cracks for the uh resurfacing of the lots and then those will be done. They're kind of generally if we give them about 3 days they're able to get through and go section by section and do all the repainting that comes along with that. So that'll be taking place in chunks throughout the summer. uh roof over at Millside and then

of course over in the back here on the auxiliary gym are two projects that are also getting underway soon here. So quite a bit going on. Uh Evan and I met with Chip Hendrick this uh past week just to touch base with Chip and he's you know pretty supportive of uh probably everything you want in the construction manager. He's here enough when you need him and then if you don't need him, he doesn't waste, you know, funding and come and do stuff just to do it. So, we really appreciate that uh having that relationship with him. So, good stuff there. Um, I talked a little bit about the budget already, but um, again, I I don't have any any real I'm very pessimistic, let's say, when it comes to uh having this thing done by

July 1st. That's we've been pretty much told that's not going to happen. Uh what's a little scarier about that is again um my guess is that once July 4th vacation hits, we're going to lose a lot of a lot of our people and Lancing won't be moving very fast. And so, you know, I I just in some ways kind of see maybe a repeat of last year. Hopefully, not to the extent to where I went into October, but um again, just not real optimistic about the uh prospects of getting that done soon. what that means for us. Um, you know, we do have some projections, you know, based on what we've seen from the House and Senate in terms of their budget. And the nice part is they're not they're not real far off. A

lot of stuff's language things. And so I I I suppose that's at least a little bit of a um, you know, guiding light, I guess. But until I see it set in stone, I don't, especially after what happened last year, I just don't feel real good about any of it. So, we'll keep banging on them. I'll be in Lancing actually tomorrow and Wednesday and we'll just keeping hope that maybe they'll get some stuff done for us. So, I've been, you know, like I with our with our locals, I've been on the phone and texting and calling and just letting them know that this is a real important thing because we opened school in September. So, >> um, >> yeah, Dorothy, Melissa, and I met with, uh, Jared and Debbie from Chartwells. Uh, just kind of

had our annual closeout meeting. And, uh, you know, with Jared being new this year, just talked about some of the things that, you know, he obviously questions about what he could do different, what he could do to improve services, which is really nice to hear. Um, he's got some ideas. We had some ideas. It was good. just good open dialogue talking about, you know, things that we thought worked well and, you know, things that we have to adjust for the following year. But, um, you know, I I I think that's going in the right direction. They're very interested in what we have to say as a district, which is, um, you know, very helpful because it's I I feel like we're doing more collaborating now than we, uh, we have in quite some time with

that group. So, uh, pretty positive meeting. Melissa's going to do some training with their noon aids um sometime later in the summer, August I think. Yeah. And >> just to give them some tools to use when they're out dealing, interacting with kids and that kind of stuff. Sometime we just assume that those are traits everybody has and sometimes they can use a few extra things to help them out. So she'll be working with some of the ones that go out on the playground there. Um, true policy updates came in. Uh, they send them, as you recall, twice a year. This one's pretty thick. So, I'll bring them to you for a first uh first look over in July and then we'll take action in August on them. I got to get through them. I haven't

even I just saw the stack of them and I decided to put that on. They got moved to a different portion of my desk for the time being. >> Procrastinating. >> Yeah, it looked like something that was had next week on it. So, Um, yeah. And so our big push obviously in the next month is going to be uh the syncing fund. The pamphlets you have in front of you, we had how many printed, Jana? Total? >> Total about 3500. >> 3500. They will go uh they're getting mailed out to every absentee voter, which will land at their house right about the same time as their absentee ballot. Uh we've gone through and updated all of our stuff in terms of lists of things that we've accomplished. We've updated our frequently asked questions. All that

information is in this packet. We'll hit it very heavy with pushouts from the school to our parent groups to our community groups. Facebook, I've got meetings uh with Elgenac Little League. I'm going to meet with uh Taffle people, get over to the Lions Club. got some dropins on some places, but just really want to make sure that really what it comes down to is if people have questions, I want to make sure that we have answers for them or a place that we could direct them to. Um, you know, I I think our our past um, you know, the questions that people had the last time when we ran this was, you know, they had talked about issues with trusting where that money went. And if you certainly look at our list of things that

have been accomplished, we have done everything that we said we were going to do with that money. We took care of our most, you know, biggest needs with uh our roofing and with some of our other issues. Our technology has been upgraded, >> gotten the buckets out of the hallways. We we've we've done the things that we told people we were going to do. And I think um being good stewards of that money is is going to go a long way. And hopefully people understand that you know we do have buildings that are aging and in order to keep them looking good and keep uh you know keep a quality education for our kids. Our kids deserve to have nice stuff and we're going to make sure do our darnest to make sure that they

get it. And so uh hopefully people see that need and um you know support when they're out there at the uh at the polls in August there. So, if anybody along the way, if you have any questions yourself or if people hit you with some things you don't have answers to, please let them know. They can email, call, stop by. I'll be more than happy to sit down with anybody that needs some things answered. So, >> I think the pickle ball courts are a good >> position. Yeah, I go >> they be out back by the um tennis courts. Is that my idea on that? So >> those things are packed in clay. >> Yeah. >> Um that's that's in the realm, John. I like that. Talk to basketball courts. We're talking about a good

outdoor outdoor. >> We don't have one. There's not one in Alan. A good basketball court. >> No. >> Clay is awful. Elan is awful. >> Yep. >> Have a lift this high cuz you're on the bottom line. >> Just doesn't make any sense to me. >> True. >> I agree. So, no, I I I think it's when I look at um the needs and and what we're asking for, this is this is really to me student and teacher centered. >> You know, a lot of this stuff, I mean, it was all in essence student centered, but you know, it was more about keeping them dry and fixing. And now we're talking about some things that actually kids can really get behind and teachers too with some renovations to classrooms. you start looking at renovating, you

know, locker rooms and things that have have been in need for quite some time, but we really did take care of what I thought were the >> Yeah. the need >> meat and potatoes. And now I think we're getting to things that I think really'll just enhance their experience here. So, >> um, >> what tech upgrades are we looking at? >> What's that? >> What tech upgrades are we looking at? Um, so we'll continue with right now, um, Chromebooks have been the devices that because we could do state testing on them and kind of have been the things that we work with. Our interactive TVs are still very current technology and they'll have some upgrades to those I'm sure along the way, but at least in the here and now, that's kind of the thing

that, you know, and again, our teachers use them. I mean, they they all do. You go by and they're they're getting their use. So, um, right now that would be, you know, keeping up on those. And I'm sure, you know, I mean, like anything, 5, 6, 7 years down the road, there's going to be something different. Our needs are our technology is going to need some upgrades and we'll probably have to do that. But, we've done a pretty good job with like at least with Chromebooks and things like that. Um, to where we don't have to, but we're doing them in cycles, so it's not as pain. You can see every year we bring you X amount just to replace and upgrade. We're kind of shifting out some of the old ones and replace them,

but there's not that one time hit of 1,200 that we have to do in a year. So, um yeah, that that's kind of what we have for that. >> What is what is the construction of baseball multi-purpose facility? Is that part of that thing? The Little League had brought it to us and it's something that we talked to them about how that might look and um >> Oh, over there. Yeah. We revamped kind of what that behind that was. Yep. And and talked a little bit about but but in those conversations too started talking about you know >> does that have to be just a baseball you know can the football kids get in there and throw it around in the in the offse. Yeah. >> So maybe more of a you know more of

a multi-purpose kind of thing. So, >> yeah. So, it's been it's led to some really good conversation and um you know, I I definitely think it's again that's one of those things that would be cool for our kids to have something like that to go and uh you know, things that maybe some of our neighboring communities have that we could put together and have it for them. I think >> maybe it could be even nice for some of those travel teams like volleyball teams or something to rent it out, you know, like >> they're always looking for places to practice and like camps in the winter or something. >> So, so anyway, like I said, if anyone has questions, please point them my way. And if not, just get out there and tell people the

importance of what we can do and that we've done what we've said and we're going to continue to do what we say. So, >> sounds good. >> That's it. Thank you. Assuming no visitor. >> No. Okay. >> All right. So, moving on to our action items. First thing uh on there is for our administrative contracts. I'll make a motion that the board approve the one-year extension of the current two-year contract for districts district administrators Tiffany Dawson, Darthy Gazelle, Melissa Hanners, Mitch Landram, Brooklyn Lastage, Brian Melrose, Joseph Oglvy, and Amber Palaki for the period of July 126 to June 30th, 28. >> Support and supported. Any discussion? I just wanted uh just for the record to put on there. Um one of the things that I think's kind of maybe gotten overlooked in the you know

difficult times when we were starting to look at budget cuts. Um I went to this group, this very group that you're approving and um asked them about a pay freeze for the this year and all of them were in agreement on that. And I know it doesn't generate huge amounts of dollars when you're not taking raise, but I think it was uh true show of leadership that, you know, we're identifying that we have needs and they're willing to do their part and kind of lead by example. So, I appreciate that of the administrative team and certainly uh you know, no one likes taking a pay, right? But, but uh they're certainly willing to do that and to uh you know, probably save the job somewhere out there. So, >> appreciate it. Thank you. Roll call

vote open, please. >> Sure. >> Heather Arnell Roberts, >> yes. >> Nicole Emory, >> yes. >> Amber Bracket, >> yes. >> John Baker, yes. Andy Boule, >> yes. >> John High Street, >> yes. >> Pass. Motion passes. Um, next on our item is the MHSA membership resolution for 26. I'll move the board of education approves the resolution as presented for membership in the Michigan High School Athletic Association for the 2026 2027 school year. A complete copy of the resolution shall be attached to the original of these minutes. >> Support moved and supported in discussion. >> Don't like them, but we need them. >> All right. So, all in favor say I. >> I. >> Any opposed? Okay. Motion carries. Uh, next up is a resolution for the approval of the final budget amendment for the

0432526. I move that the board of education approve the resolution for budget amendment act number two as presented as the final budget amendment for the general fund school service fund and special revenue fund for the 202526 school year. A complete copy of this resolution shall be attached to the original of these minutes. >> Support moved in support. Any discussion? And then thank you and Dorothy.
