Call order the board of education meeting for Monday, October 27th at 7 p.m. Please rise to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for space here anyhow. All right. Consent agenda items. Anyone want to make a motion? I'll make a motion that board of education approves agenda items agenda personel items. Any discussion? Uh just wanted to point in there is everything that you kind of teacher just after looking at the numbers and the needs of the kids busted at about 28 27 28 each kindergarten section. We know that ideally we like those numbers to be in the low 20s and so um tried to make it work. We didn't have a budget, then we got a budget, so
we were able to make a a little bit of a more of an investment in that level. So, that's uh where Sydney's on there. And she started last. >> How the transition go? >> Yeah, I I think it's gone well. I think it's gone well. Again, we're maybe talked a little bit about it in her report, but I think it's gone pretty good considering, you know, you're coming in a little bit into the school year, but um parents were very, I think, happy that we were getting some help done at that uh to spread numbers a little bit. So, um I think it's I think it's good. >> All right, supported. All those in favor say I. I any opposed? >> Yep. Um, teen health click. So, um, last time we met, uh, I told
you Mike Berninowski had come over and visited the site. Um, basically the process of having that grant transferred from uh the health department to uh community first has gone. They're going step by step with this. Um it we're getting close. They've uh told them that they can use anything that's in those rooms, which is nice because we've got, you know, some pretty nice new equipment that we had uh purchased through that grant. So, um, that's a good thing. And, um, they're just in the process right now of staffing, doing some interviews. [clears throat] Um, what I needed for you or what I needed to, um, bring to you tonight was there's a contract. It's identical to the one that we signed with the health department. Basically, just talking about our obligations and legalities. So, we
had that vetted one time already. Um, but Mike just basically used the same language just with community first on. So all I need from you guys is a not to put the signature on there. I could also bring it back to the board, but I just figured with the timing of it, um, that was something that you guys were comfortable with, we would keep pursuing the uh, arrangement with them. And it looks like um you've been talking about possibly adding some additional um social work where we had our counselor was part time and I think that we're looking for a full-time position for that. So that's that's >> what's the timeline they're thinking. >> Um I I don't know exactly. I It sounds like they um are already working on the staffing piece of it.
Um so it's rolling along pretty good. um you know, we're ready to go here at any time. One of the offices are never have been changed or touched, so they're they're ready to go. So, um I thought as soon as we could get someone in here, the better for our kids. >> All right. So, uh, the true policy update, the last update we had was only one or two, um, um, should be in your packet was set on. Not very many changes, nothing that was that one was the easiest update I've ever done because there was only one thing that we had to uh, one little alteration and it's cover right here in the update. So, nothing really new with that. The next one's a little bit more of an issue. Um, I sent you
forward you some information about 31A um last week and basically 31A is our mental health and school safety funding that we've received for the last couple years. Um, this year it'll be available. However, there's an opt-in process. part of that opt-in process um requires the district to agree to some things that we probably shouldn't be agreeing to. Um, a lot of it it there's some lines blurred in if you looked at that memo where they talk about um, attorney client privilege would not necessarily be um, honoring these things and if there was a u mass I can't remember casualty situation. >> Yeah. Um, and that's very odd the even the definition of that because there's some things in there like if there was a bus accident or you know it could potentially qualify and when
you start looking at some of the things that um we could potentially be sending the district up for it it's pretty scary. I don't know at this point we've been getting I I've got something from Trune today. I got something um from Miller Johnson who's another one of the attorney groups and they're very cautious on we have to opt in by November 16th if we're going to if we're going to opt in and I think it's starting to become such a big conversation that we're going to know a lot more in the next couple weeks about what districts are doing um and kind of how we want to proceed with that. Nobody wants to turn down money, especially as it comes to school safety and mental health. But at the same point, I think we
got [clears throat] to be very careful on what we're accepted. So, I'm going to continue to work with that. I will continue to daily probably update you on the information that I have and what my >> So, if it needs to be done for our next meeting, do we vote on it somehow or what? >> Well, I can I can do the form. I can do the optin for the on behalf of the district. Um but I'm not doing anything without some guidance from you guys. So if we had to call um a quick meeting just for that, you know, a quick 5 10 minute meeting, that's one way to do it. Or um you know, if we have some really clearcut from either shrew or you know, you could probably um do it that
way. But just it's a it's a scary situation when you start talking about your information and information of your kids that potentially could be out there as part of their investigations. And that's um I don't think any district's real comfortable with that at this point. So we'll see if they either nature and I don't think we're going to change the wording on it, but we'll see how uh how I'll let you know. What was Kawaii? I think >> um there. So I I I reached out to Bob uh McCand today and [clears throat] um actually I was talking to him for probably about a half hour. Um they seem to think that there's enough pressure right now coming that they that there's a possibility that they'll alter it or push the optin back. I don't
know if that's going to happen either. um they want to distribute the funds by the end of December, which is why they want the vote for the optin to be done sometime in November. But I think if they start to realize and maybe that's what they want is nobody to take that funding, I don't know. But it seems strange that when you're talking about two probably most important things that we're funding sources that we're dealing with when we're talking about school safety, we're talking about mental health uh health. I just find it hard to believe that, you know, they wouldn't want districts to have that funding. So, we'll see. I'll keep you guys in the loop. >> What does our number look like? Like what would we be out? Uh, it's about 140 bucks a
kid, I think, is what they told us to figure it. So, it's a chunk. I mean, it's a >> what do we have? 180 was what we figured it to be. So, yeah, it's I mean, it's >> pays for a couple positions. when you start looking at this, you know, school nurse or social worker resource office, it definitely is uh something that's needed. So, I will keep you in the loop. And I think that's it. Uh before we start administrative reports, I handed you Melissa's um she was returning from out of town, so she didn't make it down. So, I handed you her curriculum update and instruction update. So you guys have that and Ryan won't be here this evening so I will give you his update to forward it to you guys about move
on to the stage. All right. So um this month our fourth graders enjoyed the DTE energy presentation once again. They came in talked to the students about energy conservation at home. But the coolest thing is they go home with a cinch sack full of things that they're probably pressuring their parents to use right now. So they got some um door gap uh weather filling um a fiveunction shower head, [clears throat] a high performance bathroom sink airator, a kitchen sink airator, and a light sensing nightlight. So um they they go home and and they get this stuff every year. So, it's actually pretty cool and that's a lot of stuff for them to take home to their families. Um, parent teacher conferences and our book fair went really well. We had a full schedule as always.
If parents weren't able to make it, teachers made um a great effort to make sure that at least spoke to them on the phone and sent home the materials. So, we pretty much were able to get in contact with 100% of families, even if it was just forwarding some email [snorts] information to them. >> [clears throat] >> the rise of the muskrat fundraiser nor um formerly known as the glow dash that went pretty well this year. Um it's kind of petering out a little bit each year because I think the first year it was super popular and new and each year it's a little bit less but it was still well worth it. Miss Halron's class won first place at Elgquit. And Friday we had Jolina Tamino. She was our top earner at Alangquin and
she was able to do principal for a day and she was super excited. It was it was a perfect day too because we had the glow dash and leader ticket pull and the discovery kitchen also. Um which that leads me into discovery kitchen. Uh Mr. High Street and Mrs. Bracket, they came out and helped uh Chartwell staff put on a taste testing. It was like a cucumber apple salad. kind of remind me of maybe like a pasta salad. So, I thought it was pretty good. I think the older kids liked it more than the younger kids, but they all tried it cuz they got gushers if they tried. So, they all did it. Every single one. And then today, our fourth through sixth graders um were able to view uh an okay to say presentation
via Zoom. Uh what they learned was um how the safety program, what it includes, how to get in touch with it, how the tip line works, and they were also encouraged to always go to a trusted adult with anything. My favorite part was the emphasis between the difference of tattling and reporting because that's like a big thing for for the kids. Um, and they talked a little bit about cyber bullying and how to recognize techniques of predators online and just reiterated those types of information. So, and then I think Amber's going to add in all the rest of the stuff for us. >> Oh, yeah. October has been very busy. So, we kicked off with spirit week, which was enjoyed by students and staff alike. Sorry, I forgot to print mine. So, I'm my Google
Drive. Um, we celebrated student learning with our families during parent teacher conferences. Same thing. We had a lot of families show up in person. For those who weren't able to, we reached out via phone, sent materials home and really tried to make contact with everyone. Um, some classes were even above 100% because they made contact with multiple parents for the same student, too. So, we hosted during that time our Scholastic book fair. Um, and that went super well. And I wanted to say thank you to Tracy Lines for stepping up and helping out. And we had a few parent volunteers come as well, which made it super helpful when our kids were going through for preview days and buying during the day. Our first grade teachers and students have carried on their tradition of doctor
day. So that's kind of their culminating activity for their amplify knowledge unit where they're studying the body and how it works. So we had them all dressed up in scrubs and stethoscopes and all sorts of good stuff to end that unit last week. Um we were also able to welcome kindergarten teacher Sydney Luciani to our team and I know Mr. Los kind of hinted at that, but the transition has gone super super well. We did host like a mini open house a week before she came so that families that were transitioning into that room and students going into that room had the opportunity to meet her to see the new space. Um they're in our other wing. They're kind of down the first grade hallway and they've got lockers which is a huge deal for
kindergarteners. But um everyone was super excited, super receptive, and it's gone very very well. So today was the sixth day in and and things are looking really good and that's we're thankful for that opportunity. It's been it's been awesome. So, we're looking forward to continuing that. Um, last week we also had the Klay Township Fire Department come out and they met with our students from TK through 2 grade just trying to discuss fire safety and prevention. They also gave them a bag of goodies with some activities they could share at home. Things like having a meeting spot. Do you know your address? Do you know your parents' phone number? Do you know your name and your parents' name? So, really pushing those safety components that our kids need to know. We also celebrated our PTO's
Rise of the Muskrats with a fun glow dance over at Alangquin. Um, congratulations goes out to Mrs. Stanton's class. They were our top earning class. And then our top earning student was Cameron Barubi. So, he'll get his chance to be principal for a day in the next couple of weeks here. Um, looking ahead, we do have our first artifact hunt at Millside this Wednesday. So, that's a time for our ELA committee and the literacy coach and myself to go into classrooms during our small group time. and then we meet together as a team and as grade levels and as a building to kind of just celebrate, reflect, and discuss how we're going to grow our differentiated literacy instruction. Um, we're also looking forward to a visit from the Chick-fil-A leaders later this week. And then,
weather permitting, we're hoping to parade outside Elon this year with the help of the marching band. So, we'll see. That's it. So, last Wednesday we had a great turnout at our boo bash. Um, the children and families both had a lot of fun and the staff. Um, this week we have spirit week and trick-or-treating at the high school and our staff are preparing for our November conferences towards the middle of the month. >> What day do you guys do the trick-or-treating? >> We are doing it Thursday. Okay. Send candy. All right. Any board reports? >> Happy birthday, Jen. >> That's my That's my board report. >> Um, I'll say that Jen and Auntie and I attended MASB um last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. And um got a lot of stuff packed in those few days.
I know Andy focused on CPI stuff, >> right? >> And Jen was working advocacy stuff. So, um, you got a lot on it. Thank you guys for going and taking your time to do that. I appreciate it. >> There were three different sessions about the AI stuff. One one guy did three different pieces of it. And I went to all three of those. Two of them on Friday and one Saturday morning. And um, I'm coming here and I see it's the first thing on the top of Melissa's deal. when I spoke with Al a little bit about it. Um to it opened my eyes to what this thing is, what it can do, what it can be used for, what it can't be used for, how to monitor what it's being used. I mean, it's
[snorts] it's it's really something. I mean, for a long time, I was, you know, when I'd go to search for something on the internet, it would say, you know, do you want to use the such and such AI? And I'm like, no, I am perfectly capable of typing in my own questions. Thank you. But um no, it's [clears throat] um I' I've opened my eyes quite a bit about it, so it's pretty cool. So, >> oh heard that I have uh they gave us actually a plan your year ahead. So, it's everything that they're going to offer next year with dates. So, if anybody's interested in taking any class, February is all virtual. So, you take classes in your pajamas if you want to. So, I have that if anybody wants to see it. if
we can um have Jan or something scanning. Those are not online because I was looking >> Oh, you're looking. Okay. >> So, they're not online yet. So, we want to share that if you guys are interested. Um I have a couple things. So, um this Wednesday I meet with the St. County Board and then we'll discuss some things for this year. Looks like they want to have our meeting during tech week again or tech night again. So that'll be in February. I don't know the exact date. Just like February. So I'll find that out. >> Tuesday or something. >> What's that? >> Usually do it on a Tuesday, >> I think. So it's like Tuesday or Thursday night. Yeah. >> It's the night of the T open house, so they're bringing it back. >> I
thought they like were trying to get away from it. Now they're Okay. >> Well, to try to find a date that works for everybody. [clears throat] >> So So prepare to park far away. >> Yes. Yes. Um, I wanted to let anybody who is going to run in 2026, there's a couple of bills that are out that are in the House that may make us choose a party, whether Republican or Democrat. Right now, we're nonpartisan. We don't have it declared, but starting in 2026, right now, there's bills in the House that would like schoolboard members to declare their party before running. So, just want to make everyone aware in case anyone's going to run for run for reelection that they could it could happen. So, >> just run. >> So, then they have to do
the primary and all that. >> Maybe I don't know. >> I just read about it last week was the first I heard about the township. >> Yes. >> Yeah. Right now, we're the only elected officials that don't have to declare parts. So, >> anyone else reports? >> Yeah. >> Yep. Just uh a couple [clears throat] things for you. You have your binders for the evaluation. I will send you along mine. I'm finishing up some data stuff. I will send you along mine sometime. I It'll be my focus this week to get it done. So, I'm hoping to get it to you real soon. Um, just a little bit more on the budget because we really hadn't talked much about that since uh since we did we did get our budget. um after going through and
really looking at pots of money that have come in, pots of money that they're taken away. Um in essence, it it's going to come out to be a little bit that they are of course advertising it is record funding. Um and that we've got uh $400 over $400 a kid. by the time you take a look at some of the other pots of money that went away, it'll be an increase, but it's going to be a slight real slight increase this year. So, um nothing that's uh I guess about what we thought, unfortunate. Um but because it costs more now, it's hard to get by what we did, but we'll make it work. At least we know we have it now. So, um, and then the last thing I just want to share with you,
um, I I sent letters out. So, um, [clears throat] getting ready to put out letters for, uh, parent advisory group again, but, I this year, after a couple years of trying to figure out how I wanted to do it, um, I put out letters for got a list from staff and put out a letter to students for student advisory. I got list of several names and um put those out last week and um getting responses from them with the idea that um hopefully get some student voice and um you know one of the things that we've always talked about and I am I I want to know you know what things where are we missing the mark or are there things that we should be do you know maybe things that we don't even realize
we're not providing that they'd like to see so um I I always it'll be interesting because you know some of the responses are probably get pretty outrageous but um it would be good and it's good for me too um to get in there and talk to them. So >> well I what I did was I didn't want to do just all upper classroom so I started I have a few ninth graders few tth graders and try to stagger to where I got a you know pretty good voice. I wasn't brave enough to go down and start a middle school one yet but I it's something that's in my mind. I'll see how this works out first. >> We going to switch them out every year or is going to stay on? >> Yeah, I think
I think maybe uh you know I I kind of did think about that how you would want that to go. But if we've got some pretty good ones in there and they're like that younger younger grades and they maybe want to continue to see it, then might do that. But maybe it expands a little bit. You know, I'm trying to keep right now. I think I got 12 or maybe 12 to 15 that we set out. I'll see if I'll want to do it then. Yeah, we we'll see where it goes. It's probably uh probably I'm interested anyway. I'm excited about it. So, talk about some of the things, you know, like even one of the things I want to [clears throat] talk about AI. How do you use it? And you know, what's what's
your It'll be interesting to see. >> Oh, yeah. They use it for breakups. I already >> for preups. [laughter] I mean, it's going to be important for employers and start expecting them to know how to use AI, starting the workforce. So, That was >> start now. >> Well, the one presenter at the at the conference said that um he typed in scanned his resume into it and then put a few little just typed in a few little facts about himself. Said, "Write me a cover letter." >> Oh yeah. >> And bada boom, there it was. Just tuned up a couple little things on it. >> I want to hear more about the breakup. >> [laughter] [snorts] >> That's it. >> Okay. >> All right. We'll move on to Oh, well, do we have any visitors?
>> On action items. We have sixth grade camp. Anyone want to make a motion? >> Not camp. Chicago. >> Yes. I'll make a motion that the LV9 board of education approve the sixth grade overnight trip request for May 27th through 29, 2026 to Chicago. The cost of the trip will be covered by fundraising and student families. There will be no cost to this trip supported. Any discussion? >> All right. So, all in favor say I. >> Any opposed? Motion to adjourn. [clears throat] >> In favor say I. I. >> Any opposed?
