Obviously, you know the drill. Yeah, that's >> You can pick it up. >> Yeah, pick it up, maybe. Please. >> go. No. >> No. Is

003there a button? Michael, can you turn on the mic for comments? Yeah. Not working. It'd be funny if that worked. It would be funny if it worked after a touchdown. Do you want to Say you want to take Windless? Thank you, Michael. Technology. Is it not going to work? Oh. Um that cord is going to work. What is it? That cord is going nowhere. All right. Okay. All right, talk loud. Thank you in advance for the Cedar Point field trip. The kids had a great time. It was awesome to see the kids like playing through it, but not meet the timelines. Uh but they're super thankful, grateful. Uh the sponsors are thankful and grateful. And that's it. I just wanted to say thank you. So, thank you for all that. Thank you. All right. Anyone

004else? Okay, moving on. Superintendent's reports, first up safety concerns. Uh yeah, I wanted to take a minute and speak to the board in regards to the safety concerns that were raised at the last meeting. Uh concern was raised our last meeting in regards to the response time of the police department to to D7, particularly to this building, O.W. Best. Um I have been in discussions with Captain Hatton from the police department in regards to our entire system, the lockdown, the smart boot alert system. Um as you know, we met with the captain on the earlier this fall and went over um how to work the device, how to use it, um watched our safety video, demonstrated the boot, locked ourselves in, and went through the whole process. So, the issue centers around the location of

005the master tablet where they have it in the department, um and that's the one that's connected to D7, connect to our system. And not only is it connected, but it's a master tablet, so they can put our buildings into lockdown if there's something going on um in a neighborhood or in an area that we're that needs to be locked down immediately that we're not aware of. So, um we want to make sure that we have an immediate response if there is an emergency. The captain assured me that he's committed to do that, and he's currently looking at a solution for location of that tablet. I told him we'll do whatever it takes, um whatever it needs, if we need um to do additional training, if we need to look at um >> [music] >> the

006way that that Excuse me. the way that that um system is configured, but whatever it takes, we're willing to work with them to ensure that we have a uh fast um response time if there is an emergency. I think you guys know this, I'm very thankful for our lockdown system, um and that we have it here. Um I've just of all the, you know, I go all the way back to the early Alice days when we uh uh uh had to practice in our classrooms of putting chairs and tables up against doors. Um, we had to put, you know, belts on doors that moved out. Just all different kinds of configurations. I'm thankful because I've seen it in action. I've seen buildings get locked down in mere under a minute. I mean, that fast. Um,

007but it does have its quirks and one of them is false poles and the other one is it happened at party just last week where student hit a boot in it, put the building in lockdown. So, those are issues that um, we need to continue to work through, but I'll always say I feel confident knowing that we've trained our staff and our students on how to use the system and that we can put people behind boots so that they can be safe. So, we're still working on it. Um, we'll be setting up additional meetings with the with the leadership at the city um, to make sure that we have rapid response for any issues that come up. But again, um, the system is designed that the master boot will alert folks immediately and that's what

008we want it to do. So, we'll continue our work on that. There's also a question raised about security guards um, in our LaGuardia contract. So, next year we're looking at two security guards, one at the middle school, one at the high school and um, but we're also looking at additional plans for um, when students are moving throughout the building and how we can um, increase student supervision during passing time. Um, possi- possibly reconfiguring our schedules of our um, folks that we have here that are already employed. So, we are working on that plan as well. So, those were two of the major issues that were brought up at last um, meeting. Any questions? Okay, thank you. Uh next is the MASB. Yep. This is This is a fun one. Okay, so I will talk loud

009so I talk to the board. So, this evening we do have MASB awards and certificates that we need to distribute. So, I'll have you folks line up here. Line up. Do you want the microphone? I'll speak up. Okay. Okay. So, this evening Derek is receiving the certificate of achievement for MASB community relations, MASB advocacy, and MASB leadership. And I know that all of this work is behind the scenes. The community doesn't see this work. Um but I certainly appreciate it. I've always said a more educated board is a better board. Congratulations. All right, Wendy, can you come on up? Good job, Derek. Look at you, all achieved. I just want to hold this. That's for Wendy. Congratulations. Wendy's is receiving the uh certificate of achievement for CBA certified. So, congratulations. Tanya, can you come on

010up? You can tell um we got a few here, so But again, uh Tanya, all the work you put in, uh certificate of achievement, award of merit, right between you, you completed level one course work, CBA certified, and MASB finance. Congratulations. >> Finally, at least one of Finally, at least So, Elise is receiving the certificate of achievement award CDA certified and award of merit for completing level one course work. So, congratulations. And again, I will just say um for the audience and folks, a lot of work at the board level goes beyond just sitting up here at the table. So, please know that on behalf of the staff and the students here at B7, we thank you for your extra commitment and kind of leading the way with course work and work that you guys

011do kind of behind the scenes. So, thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Mark. All right. Next up Superintendent's recommendations. 020Moved by trustee Baltowsky Supported Supported by trustee Stevanovic. Questions? Comments? Just a quick comment. This is non-general fund dollars, so this is money that's left It's money from the remaining building and site fund, not the not the building and site issue that was just passed. And so this is badly needed to continue the pool to operate at the level that we need to operate. So but I just want to make it clear this is not a general fund purchase. This is building and site. Trustee Walls? >> Yes. Trustee Anderson? Yes. Trustee Beltowski? Yes. Trustee Sterlini? Yes. Motion carries. Item number nine, unfinished business discussion of the official newspaper of record. This has been fun for Susan. So we continue our efforts. I think what we're going to end up doing is

022just sending our stuff to to these folks as well. We've struggled and Sue's worked tirelessly to talk to someone and they really don't have a structure that we can get our hands on about identifying it as our main. So I think we just send the information out and make sure that it gets published and if it doesn't then we'll continue to try. Yeah. Yeah, I tried reaching out to them as well and Um no, I The The one that we discussed. The one that we discussed. That Dearborn Both Dearborn ones. Is it the Arab newspaper? >> Yeah, the Arab newspaper. Yeah, I tried reaching out as well and it's it's all through Facebook messenger and nobody responds. Arab American News? >> Yeah. Okay. So, that will be our official newspaper of record. Yeah, yeah, but

023we'll put it on a Yeah, okay. Okay, next item up. Listen and learn session follow-up and roll out. So, I I watched the meeting last week or last time and I just want to say so we can as a board do a closed session meeting. We absolutely can. I've learned that if you all took the Michigan Open Meetings Act class, you can do an open meeting. Yes, there are eight points that typically fall under a closed I'm sorry, I said open meeting. I said I meant closed session. Sorry. There are eight points as Manny pointed out that typically closed sessions fall under. Not everything falls under that as in the case that was discussed for the listen and learn. We can absolutely have any closed session meeting that we would like to have for our

024board. We just have to have an attorney to you know, be a part of that. Not they don't have to sit in the meeting with us. They just have to It's like attorney-client privilege. So, you can all day go into closed meetings. We don't we don't do that as a board for transparency purposes. We don't want to do that, right? So, but for the listen and learn for the closed session, we had told our staff that we were going to do a closed session. We told them we were going to make it anonymous. And I I can't go back on that word what we so told the staff. I had staff after that meeting and I hadn't watched it at the point come and email and say, you know, they wanted to rescind what they

025said because they felt like we are going against our word. And that is we've already got, you know, a budget issue, right? And it to go back on our word as a board to staff, and I think that's just we can't do that. And I will say, I'm sorry, I'm rambling. Like I sat in a lot of those, a lot of those. I had people coming to me shaking, afraid to talk. That to I I just can't go back on the words of somebody. If either we we have a closed session or we don't. My thought is I just don't want it to it slip out that oh, so-and-so said this, or you can tell by some things who said what. So, that's anyway, I'm rambling. Go ahead. So, I agree with what you said

026about not going back on your word. Um but I also know that it was brought up um that we would make it public our findings. So, I I've been thinking about this a lot, and I think we go into closed session, we discuss it, and then we compile the points that were made Right. over and over again, and then you're just you're you're you're we're just bullet pointing them. And so, the information, this is what we heard, and this is it. Boom, boom, boom. There's nothing that would identify anybody else because it would just be a bullet point of a generalization of, you know, the points that we heard over and over again. Right. And we did say we'd share a summary. >> Yes. So, that's what I'm saying, a summary. >> so that nobody

027would have any clue Yeah, I don't think So, the staff will know, here's what was >> I don't think the way that we shared it I don't think the way that we compiled them naming, you know, saying speaker one, speaker two. We don't need to put that. We just need to do a summary. >> Right. It's not going to be longer than a page. We've got like 30 pages of notes. Right. So, that's that I mean that those those are my thoughts. I'm just I'm just saying those are my thoughts. I think that we go into closed session. We discuss everything that was discussed in closed session and then we summarize it all for transparency purposes. >> Yep. I agree. I thought that's what we were going to do. Right. The only thing I would

028suggest is take all that information, co-pilot or some type chat GPT, something that it will do it for us that can summarize it in less than one page. >> that. You've already done that. You didn't pass it along to anybody. No, because I wanted us to get together and talk, but I haven't passed it on yet. So, I've If that's the case, then the question is do we even need to go into closed session? I think we should have a session unless other people to We needed to talk to Mark. To share. So, Oh, that Okay, that's going to be another question. >> Well, so for Mark's piece. Now, there were teachers and that kind of didn't want him to be a part of that because of what was said and yeah, we can kind

029of keep things still not mention names in a closed session. Mark and I just I shared with Mark feedback when we met regarding, you know, things going on budget-wise. I shared with him feedback already. Like not full like what I was asked to do. I also talked to him about do you want to be a part of this closed session? And he said he would stay out of it just because he wants he doesn't want Well, you can say why, you know, for the teachers and that the same I just don't want to skew the results. So, you guys do your work and I think that's great. You know. Okay. And then it would set everyone at ease that he's not a part of it and maybe gets hear something, you know, we Let's I

030think that would be best for all staff. >> So, the plan would be after you have the generalized chat GPT, co-pilot, whatever it is, you're just going to hand that to Mark then, right? Right, but I didn't personally like how co-pilot summarized it all. I thought it was a little crazy. I I have to go into it more, but or we can even like everybody summarize, here's what was said and some of you kind of did. Here's a summary and then I take your summaries from your meetings and then put it in the co-pilot, you know, something to that effect. I'll figure it out. We can talk about it in closed session, but Can can we not use chat GPT and co-pilot? Can You know, I'm I'm very succinct at writing and um yeah, the

031less AI we use, the better for our >> I would actually agree with that. the better for our environment and everything else. So, um I would be more than happy to offer my services. I I'm I'm I'm I'm a pretty pretty proud of my writing, so I would agree. I will tell you that I am like an anti-AI person until I got forced to have to use it at work. But, what I found out is when you give it something to do, literally, if you say the word please on it, it makes a difference. If you tell them a certain way you want it to be done, it will do it that way. >> Yeah, it's That's not natural. >> [laughter] >> It works though. I will I will say Is it perfect? By no

032means, no. I agree with the whole chat GPT. Okay, so do we want to set up a meeting date and then I know Leslie had said whenever. >> Yeah, maybe canvas for dates. Okay, do you want to do that now or just I'll circle up with you guys and let you >> Send an email. >> people missing, so send an email, circle around. Maybe you can pick three dates Yeah. Whatever to do. Okay, that might be better. We'll see how that goes. Cuz I would like the full board there. So, this is going to be fun going into summer. Okay. All right. Good. Are we good? Discussion? Okay. Hopefully we answered and hopefully whatever it the staff's mind at ease that it's not going to be discussed for a President Let's just say one suggestion

033could have been though is also is that if everybody has the full set of everything and then if anybody like Chrissy Baltoski wants to maybe do her little summary. You know, cuz then then we can all bring in a summary, too, and see how that comes out, too. So, I did. You guys should all have an email like all the notes that were You guys should all have it. Okay. All righty, new business. Do we have any new business? Oh, okay. District points of pride, Mr. Klein. Very good. Thank you. Um have a lot here, but I'll um kind of go through it quickly. A lot of work has gone on around um the district and a lot of volunteer and a lot of showcasing and I just absolutely love it. The creek cleanup was

034a success. The family fun night was awesome. Success. We had some board members that were there that was great. The HS beautification uh day was fantastic and the student um art show that they had at the high school was awesome as well. So, just a lot going on. Our enrollment fair is part of that. I would just want to thank all the volunteers who assisted at the enrollment fair. We had 54 families attend. 60 staff members volunteered and we had four board members. Um 27 applications for enrollment or school of choice applications. Um and if you were there, the backpacks were a big hit. They were donated to D7. So, um but the kids absolutely loved them. Uh Dr. Portcheler and the enrollment fair committee did a fantastic job of planning and promoting the event.

035Um it was well attended. We did have a medical incident at the event. It's unfortunate, but I do want to thank all those who interceded to give care until EMS arrived. Cheryl Howard, Jen Blackburn, Ariel Brown jumped right in and then two of our board members went above and beyond and assisted the family with transportation to get to the hospital back. So thank you guys. So that was a very unfortunate and we hope and pray that the individual involved will make a recovery as a result of that, but overall the event was was was well. We're already planning the next meeting to make any changes, any ideas, any things that we can do to improve improve it, but the key part of it was the enrollment piece and at this time so we invited all

036of our schools of choice families to that event and that's where the school of choice in the four applications came, but we have 60 plus school choice applications that are being vetted to date that we received already, which is fantastic news. So pretty excited about that. Summer Discovery Program, we have 273 students sign up, so it's growing. The staffing so that the staffing for that is based on the number of students because that's how much money we get from the grant. We can go up to 400, but it's truly based on how many students you have. So we've got students. We got another day before the official closing. We'll have a couple of students. We're going to try to fit them in and see what happens, but on a wait list, but the assignments for

037the staffing will go out tomorrow along with the high school title one program that regular summer school that we always run for credit recovery for the high school students. So, pretty excited about that. There's a final piece that needs to be vetted and that is, you know, according to the grant we have to do four field trips and they may may be field trips away or we may be field trips here, but those the final planning and getting those hammered are currently taking place right now. And and any dollars for busting, for entry, for any of the four events, if we're bringing a zoo or a like a traveling zoo or folks that bring the animals in like they do at our elementary, any of those expenses are covered through the grant. So, this is

038non-general fund money. So, we're rolling on that. The graduation information, I've sent that out. Tomorrow there will be tears. That's all I got to say. Tomorrow's the clap out and and then the end of the day assembly for seniors. The prom's on the 28th. That's at the War Memorial facilities and if you go on and Google that facility, I've never been there, but it looks beautiful. Um, June 4th is the 2026 commencement ceremony. Begins at 6:00. I'm asking board members to be there at 5:00 that works, hopefully. And then the senior all-night party is after graduation at the senior at the Zap Zone. So, 5:00, be there. If you need anything you need, talk to Sue. Take care. That's all. Um, just then very quickly from the building, just a lot of stuff. At Madison,

039they're completely full next year, which is great because they're ahead of the game. They received seven more applicants as a result. Those weren't in these numbers of the enrollment fair. So, that was kind of cool. We had tables set up all around of all the different departments and buildings and so, that was really good. And then they're having their preschool graduation on June 10th at 10:00 a.m. Our elementaries are very busy with all the end-of-the-year activities and everything that's going on. Polk did want me to do an invitation to the board Friday, May 29th. Um, that's their field day. Um, they invite board members to come and see a fantastic event. Um, they're also hosting a Lilly's Lap-a-thon. So, I just wanted to throw that out Thursday afternoon to raise funds for Lilly Lilly Lilly's

040facility dog and both, um, Ruby and Lilly were in attendance last night and I just just changes the whole event. It really does. They're they're just really neat to have around. O.W. Best eighth graders, a great time, great trip, and Washington special thank you to Deanna Coleman, Jeff Turgeon, Kelly Knapp, and Monty, um, assistant principal. The trip was a great success in their Cedar Point uh, trip. Eighth grade formal, recognition night, band concert are all coming up, and so uh, real busy. I just left before this, the high school honors. Um, Aaron and Colette do just, um, just a fantastic job on that. Um, not Colette, I'm sorry, Colette. She does a wonderful job on that. There were 180 uh, college acceptance out of this year's graduating class, and this year's graduating class earned over

0411.6 08672. So, 1,608,672 dollars in scholarships. So, that's absolutely amazing. Now, one one person may have got two scholarships from So, but they just keep a running total of it, but absolutely amazing. I was surprised a lot of our students stay local, but I was surprised with the the MAC schools must have made a a push. Central, Eastern, um, Bowling Green, um, and then also a lot of our students are going on to trade school, which I think is absolutely awesome as well. So, it's just a wonderful wonderful event event. Um in high school high school athletics, we had three state qualifiers for track, which is awesome. And as you guys know, we tried the inaugural year of the girls flag football. They tied for first place in their league. And thank you to coach

042Stannis, McCoy, and Osmond. So, um good first try at that. That could eventually make its way to an MHSA sport down the road. So, very cool. In our EL program, a special thank you to the EL teachers for initiating and organizing a meaningful diversity celebration uh for the tremendous effort they put in into supporting our multi-uh lingual learners throughout their projects. The celebration uh beautifully reminds us of the importance of honoring and embracing every culture as represented within our schools. And then I would just like to add that um just a thank you People are traveling for Memorial Day. You know we have a long weekend coming up. Please be safe. And just very proud of the good things that are happening here in here in D7. Now, I know that we are we're still

043working on the budget issues, and we'll work our way through this. Um but there's still a lot of wonderful things that are going on in the district, and people are working hard. I was so proud of the staff members who volunteered for the event. I mean, it was clear when you walked in, it was the place to be. There were people all over the place. At one time, the enrollment tables were full. Shaheen had um we switched it all up to get away from paper and go digital. We had Chromebooks and uh stuff so people could take pictures and put that stuff in there. We had an emergent um emergency notary. Yeah, and and it was wonderful cuz Wendy stepped in to save the day. So, cuz the individual that was involved had traveled a

044ways and we needed a notary. So, um but I just was so very proud of all the work that went in and just a tremendous amount of time. Andrea Frendo, I don't know how many emails and how many spreadsheets she completed for this thing, but absolutely absolutely amazing. Pat was on site at noon that day, started set up, and worked all the way through to the end to make sure that place was in tip-top shape and looked really, really good for all of the folks that came in. So, um anything to add? I just like to give kudos to Paul Daniels. Uh his walking tacos for the food of the event last night. Everyone loved them. So, thank you for your hard work. I think he sent out the recipe or where to order the

045stuff from that. So, it was a big hit. So, yeah. But, uh so, thank you. All right. Thank you. Thank you. All right. Other business. We have um three board seats that are open for a lot open Oh my gosh. For next election. So, July is the deadline to submit your application to the city. And my understanding at least last time, you have to make an appointment and they go through your paperwork unless they've changed it from last year. But, they They didn't. They just Okay. Cool. So, we have three seats. Trustee Anderson, Trustee No, you're not. Me? Trustee Balkauskas and Trustee Windless seats are open. So, that's three. All right. Any comments, questions? What did you say, you? No. All right. Uh board committee updates. Do we have any board updates? Building and site.

046Did you have an update for it? You weren't here last time. Oh, okay. Trustee Windless has something Um I just wanted to give a great shout out to the Vision to Learn that we brought in this year. Um, sorry, I forgot. Um, they did a wonderful job with the kids and getting them all geared up for their new glasses that look awesome on them. Um, I was able to see the trucks in action and all the technology they have in there is amazing. And all the things that they got done with the kids in a quick turnaround time, they had their glasses they just delivered um this past week and all the kids being excited and wearing glasses was very cool to see. That's cool. Just wanted to give a shout out to them and

047how amazing they were. Nice. Good. That's good to know. Thank you. >> Yeah. Were you doing Building and Site? Yes. Mr. Wall. So, Building and Site we, sorry, we met on Wednesday, May 13th. Called order at 6:37 p.m. Present was myself, Trustee Favenole, I think. Oh, wait. See, I haven't seen her around. >> [laughter] >> Mr. Kleinhanz, uh Pat At- Atanazio, they say right? Close enough? And then Pat Graca was a community member. Not present, uh Trustee Beltowski, uh Mr. Armstrong and uh Virginia Morgan. So, uh is it was a shorter meeting. It was pretty much just kind of working on some of the old business, uh which with party playground was the rocking horse. Um, the repairs were to be completed by the goal of uh the next week, so I'm probably anticipating that's

048already been corrected. Uh, the water filtration project, uh Pat was able to get the breakdown what was needed for the purchase and what was needed for installation from an external resource. Um, she did provide an update which included removing 41 existing elementary classroom drinking fountains and that was going to be through the D7 engineers so there would be no additional cost to the district. Uh for the high school pool, there was uh discussion with regards to the HVAC, the ventilation, and the one pool um pump that needed to be fixed. Uh there was agreement for that to go forward which you guys already have received that. Um Bedford was uh we wanted to hear more on the warranties on the side netting for preventing the baseballs going into the neighbors and Annapolis Street. Uh more

049information um will be provided at the next meeting. The high school parking lot um similar, we wanted to hear more information on the cost and warranty of the parking lots on parking lights. So therefore uh we'll hear more of that at the next meeting. Uh there was no new business, there was no other business, and there was no public comment. The next meeting uh is to be determined and we ended same day, May 13th at 7:33 p.m. Any questions? >> All right, thank you. All right, upcoming board meetings. It looks like finance committee, there is one on Wednesday, June 3rd at 6:30 p.m. in the board office. Is that correct, Mr. Wall? Yes. Yes, that is correct. Finance committee is going to meet on Wednesday, June 3rd, 6:30 board office. The building and site, we

050had a date but it there was a conflict so it's to be determined at this time. Okay. All right, thank you. Okay. All right, next up public comment number two. Do we have any public comments? Please come up and state your name and affiliation, please. My name is Joan Pierce. I am the resource teacher at Bethel Elementary School. For one thing, let me make it perfectly clear, I love my job. I love my students. I love what I do. But at this time right now at Bethel, we are in need. Okay, we have a student here that that is I look at our situation. Okay, this child is writing, talking about guns, drawing pictures of guns, talking about killing, threatening me, talking about killing people. Um he's throwing shoes at the principal. He has pulled

051down his pants and and showing himself. I am in the hallway where we have pre-K and kindergarten students. This student is yelling all kinds of profanity, threatening to kill yourself, threatening to kill us, talking about guns, saying that his father took him to get some guns, that they can fire guns, that they can kill people. I just want I don't want to see another option. I don't want to see that. I will say this one, I am a veteran. I am also a corrections officer. I have worked with juvenile offenders and I have worked with adults. This has to be something has to be done. Something has to be done. Now, the student has been sent, he's not there now. And every time something happens, he is put out. But we don't need him coming

052back. I'm afraid. I was injured trying to prevent this child from being loaded. I am not the only person that was injured trying to stop this child from being from loaded. I do not want to see anybody else get hurt. I want you guys to really think about this because if you had children, would you want your child in that situation? And I don't think you would. So, that's all I have to say. Thank you for listening to me. And please think about what I said. I This The signs are there. They're there. I was looking at the news when this young lady that got shot by kindergarten. We can't put an age on these kids. We can't. This child is saying he has guns in his basement. He's telling us his father takes them

053out and buy guns. He's shotguns. What are they going to do? Wait for somebody to die? Thank you. I appreciate you coming to the board with this. Anyone else? All right. Next up Oh, kudos.
