004me in welcoming our student body president [Music] [Applause] cello there we are there we are hello everyone my name is cah fow and I'm your 2023 2024 student body president when asking around what my graduation speech should be nearly everyone told me to reflect on my high school experience what high school gave me so today I wanted to take this moment to appreciate three of the gifts mirand high school has given me first is the gift of a failed test I received this gift in AP Psychology where I failed a unit exam worth 70% of my grade no option for a retake to ensure I never failed again I studied hard for the next next exam with flashcards and everything and still I failed this pattern continued with the next test and the one after
005that I thought that this grade defined who I am that I was a failure I've now learned our worth goes beyond any of the grades we' received here at Mara High School having great grades is an accomplishment to be proud of but it doesn't Define us we are defined instead by the quality of our character by the bonds we share with each other with this gift I also learned learned that you that failure is important to our journey during this next step in life you are going to fail you are going to fall down so many times that the ground is going to become your best friend but that failure is important to your journey without failure we would never learn never improve never succeed because I failed and learned and improved I got an
006A on my next AP psychology test next is the gift of teachers teachers of any kind the good and the great the ones that have in their class and the ones that didn't all advisers coaches tutors parents and Guardians these people are the gifts we don't seem to appreciate enough the amount of struggles teachers have helped us work through the amount of patience they've had the amount of missing assignments they've accepted last minute throughout it all they never gave up on us they continued to teach us to push us and watch us grow into better people all of my teachers taught me the lessons I needed to be standing here today and just in case I haven't said it before thank you lastly the gift of a friendship bracelet adults always tell me how they
007no longer talk to their high school friends they tell me how those friendships started to fade due to time and distance apart now I'm not going to be naive and say me and my friends won't be like that we'll be this close forever I understand that probably won't be the case so instead I have this gift of a friendship bracelet this physical reminder of all the people who were important to me these strings and Beads bound with the love I hold for all of them being able to look at every single one and have a memory attached to it a reminder of someone I love is a gift and knowing they all have a reminder of me even if that reminder ends up in a Dusty old box or heaven forbid the trash can knowing
008that we're all still connected no matter how far apart we are is the best gift I could have asked for so you may be thinking Cella why should I care about any of the gifts you were given well we all have our own gifts yours could be your after school club or your sophomore year English class or one you're not even aware of yet but whatever they are all of them taught you something all of them got you here to this moment take a second to reflect on that reflect on what your gifts might be thank you Miranda high school for all the gifts I mentioned and all the ones I didn't those I promise you I will never forget and now introducing our senior speaker Broden [Applause] Williams good evening everyone my name is
009BR Williams and I was selected to be the class of 2024 senior class speaker everything I've ever done in my life has led up to this moment every test every dance every raised hand every missed question every final every lunchroom joke everything I've done everything we've done and in this moment I am euphoric and this Euphoria stems not only from pride in myself but pride in my peers we wrote the papers took the tests did the exams and we succeeded we did it we're graduating but that's not what counts us all of us we are what counts as I look at the faces of my peers this field full of hundreds of you I see something reassuring resilience I feel it together we've weathered the storms of adolescence navigating the Maze of expectations and aspirations
010of act tests homecomings Pi Day prom cafeteria renovation micro bursts and mask mandates we are resilient and we are graduating this journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support and guidance we've received from each and every one of you as such I would like to express some gratitude I have just a few specific thank yous to impart to those members of our community who made my high school Journey as meaningful as possible firstly I would like to thank my aunt VA who taught me the importance of hard work and dedication and without whom none of this would have ever been possible thank you I would also like to thank Mrs Edmonds and Mr Calton the best possible Academic Decathlon coaches around your dedication to our program has been truly inspiring but not only

012meaningful for some it was coach doer for others Senor eing Mrs Nomo or Mr Grandy and it's possible to forget our admin team our janitors our counselors and the countless others who work to make this place function day in and day out thank you to every member of the Mirana Community who has played a part in our educational experience I thank you wholly and sincerely and for my final and maybe most important thank you of the night I look to my classmates together we shared countless Unforgettable moments and made memories that will last forever thank you for the laughter the camaraderie and the bonds that have defined our high school experience your your friendship and support have made even the toughest days brighter I'm grateful for each and every one of you and I'm proud

014the Morana High School class of 2024 salutatorian kale [Applause] olssen well I'm a little embarrassed to admit this but up until about a month ago I thought it was pronounced salad dictorian so I don't know maybe I'm not the best pick for salutatorian um there's this Theory called nominative determinism which is the idea that people gravitate towards positions or areas of work that fit their names for example uh coach ball and Coach sweat both teach PE here and it's hard to imagine them with names like that being anywhere else Usain Bolt is the fastest man on Earth and I would be too if I had a last name like that one night a a few months ago I was at work when I was hit with a horrible thought oh no I kale am on
015track to be the solad itorian I was scared about what this meant for my future so I delved into the topic one possible explanation of nominative determinism is that one's self-expectations are directly affected by the name by which he or she is called we become the very persons we expect ourselves to become to this end if there's just one thing you take away from me standing up here like an idiot I want to be this see yourself for who you can become I'm not talking about income or influence or intellect no this means more than anything the world has to offer I'm talking about your potential to be a better person to be kinder and to be more charitable treat everyday as an opportunity to help those around you even when it's inconvenient or hard
016if you can so much as improve by 1% each day by the end of the year you'll be more than 37 times better than man or woman than you are now always remember to be kind and to be forgiving and when you fall short don't give up but see yourself for who you can eventually become and work a little bit harder to become that person you guys are the best one day we're going to bump into each other down the road and I kale CEO of Whole Foods will be so proud to have known the most kind-hearted charitable and impactful people the world has to offer while I'm up here I'd like to thank my mom and dad who have always been eager to help and support me I'd also like to say thank you
017thank you to all of the teachers and coaches at the school for putting so much time and effort into helping us graduates get to where we are today I'd like to thank that one big storm that came by at the beginning of this year um I used to eat lunch under this big tree that was home to these birds that would regularly poop on my head but now the tree is gone and the birds have no home thank you storm I'd like to thank uh Mrs Kaufman she's truly an amazing and sincere person one of the first things she did when she became principal was start an initiative to clean up and beauy our campus and let me tell you it has worked wonders it's been three whole years since I've last been chased by
018a school lunch cheeseburger attached to a remote control car and I really appreciate it really we couldn't have asked for a better and more caring principal it's been an honored to have grown up with all of you guys and I look forward to seeing not so much what uh not so much what each of you become but who you grow to be thank you I'd now like to introduce our valid Victorian Aden schols [Applause] not that tall um good evening it is a great honor to be the valedictorian of the class of 2024 when I was younger I never dreamt of being here and speaking in front of such a large audience who unlike those I talk to in my day-to-day life can't just get up and leave when they get bored I always wanted
019to be a professional basketball player I practiced day and night until I was trampled by all of the taller and frankly much better kids on the court I always pictured myself playing competitively for a large portion of my life but now years later life has taken me down a different path I still love the game but my skill set is much better suited for the business side side of things maybe as an agent or a general manager I don't have my life completely figured out though but I'm going to enjoy the process of figuring it out and I encourage you all to do the same as graduating high schoolers we cannot let ourselves get so caught up with goals goals that others expect us to fulfill goals that we expect of ourselves that we fail
020to enjoy our day-to-day lives and pass up opportunities that present themselves I'm not saying that we shouldn't have lofty aspirations or plan our futures we definitely should and I still genuinely believe we can become anything we want if we put our minds to it but let's not allow a goal of attaining one specific thing to prevent us from truly living and finding our skill sets and adjusting course when necessary when I think back to my time in high school I think about all the time I spent having fun with my friends at lunch or goofing off in the middle of class I don't think about my lost dream of being a basketball player I don't think about all the things I didn't accomplish I think of all the things things I did accomplish I think
021of the moments of friendship and support that have allowed me to get to this moment standing here speaking to you I'd like to conclude by thanking some of the most influential people in my own life thank you to my family who taught me that sometimes going with the flow is the right choice and you don't have to plan every little detail of everything thank you to my teachers who taught me that I could accomplish more than I ever thought thank you to my friends who taught me that no matter how hard I tried I'm not always right and finally I'd like to thank my sister for teaching me how to write a speech as a wise woman once alluded to even if we think we know everything at 18 we might not know anything at

035would be the first of several disruptions to our educational experience in the spring semester of 8th grade we went home for spring break not knowing that we would never return to our middle schools people would be fighting over toilet paper or that we wouldn't be able to be in the same room as our families for a while nothing has been the same since and it was pretty hectic we started High School online with zoom meetings then hybrid then back to zoom meetings to our teachers doing both at the same time that was our transition into high school but we've persevered you have that piece of paper in your hand and that is the beginning of your whole future we have made it through hectic times and struggles together but right now I want you to
