school teacher at marinah high I teach 9th and 12th grade English I also uh have those two cute little humans who are enrolled at Twin Peaks in first and third grade and then I'm The Treasure of the mirand Education Association and tonight I came out to chat about some of the good things that are going on because often times uh our focus is on what what isn't going super hot I will tell you that it might sound negative at first but I promise there's a win uh so you know this school year has been challenging for a variety of reasons we had like a small tornado uh that damaged our campus significantly uh our students are definitely uh showing some challenging behaviors and we've had a a number of just really difficult uh tragedies on
campus so things have been really hard and it can be really difficult to focus on the positive uh I have a a class my last class of the day uh my sweet baby freshman who have really challenged me to see the positive in them and uh it has been a lot of a lot of work to mitigate some of the behaviors that I've been seeing and this is not something that we're just seeing in my building uh this is something that that teachers across the the state have been talking about and I I've actually started calling them my naughty noodles because like using an endearing name makes me feel less um uh intensly annoyed by some behaviors that have popped up and you might be thinking like this does not sound like a celebration at
all like why why are you telling me about your freshman being naughty well I have had the distinct pleasure of working with our new admin our new administrator at marinaa high school as well as our established um admin team and I have while I've never had a class quite this challenging not to toot my own horn but like I tend to really do well with classroom management um I have been so incredibly supported by my administrative team I have had my admin in my classroom supporting me a ton and I have found that even through some really challenging conversations ations I've completely been supported it's been fantastic and I know that a lot of that has to do with the fact that mea um our Union has a really strong relationship not only with our
Administration on our site but also with senior staff in the board so while uh it has been challenging the Silver Lining is that through our our work collectively as a union and our work with the lovely and talented Dr streer in company we have been able to deal with what has been a a challenging year so we all know I could keep talking but thank you so much and I wish everyone a smooth end of the semester thanks thank [Applause] you next item is item G superintendent comments president Lopez uh governing board members members of uh the audience we've had a lot of uh really big events uh celebrations and um just opportunities to team build over the last month and so I'm going to go back to November uh and and start this off
with uh back on November 16th we held our grand reopening of the pal program at the old Thornydale location and we dealt with a little bit of rain that night uh but overall we had a great night with a really nice turnout uh where we really got to reintroduce the pal program to our community and I really want to congratulate our pal team on putting together a great event uh there's still a few additional projects that we're that we're working on over there but I will say that the classrooms the new playgrounds uh look fantastic and uh certainly uh happy that our our pal team is able to support our littlest learners uh also I had an opportunity back on December 1st uh to do a superintendent governing board campus visit at mirand middle school
so I do want to thank the MMS team for opening their doors to Mrs marronis uh Mr Carlson and myself uh for that visit we had a day that was filled with great conversations and enjoyable classroom visits uh during our classroom visits we saw a variety of activities across the campus uh a pretty impressive character autopsy um a few uh Dynamic visible learning uh classrooms uh if you haven't seen how math is being taught at a lot of our secondary schools it's the the level of Engagement from our students is really exciting um and not to mention we did get to see some preparations for the holiday choir activities as well uh as we met with different employee groups there was a common theme that emerged around the Community Field that exists at Mar Middle
School uh some of the comments that we heard from employees were I found my dream job here everyone is nice and will help out with anything you need this feels like a family there's a lot of support here a teamwork Spirit there's camaraderie and a sense of community and then during our visit with the student leaders we heard several positive comments as well I really L the teachers I'm really comfortable with my teachers we have amazing relationships and our teachers incorporate Lear with fun activities I want to congratulate the Mirana middle team uh not just for putting together an impressive day uh but for the outstanding work that they're putting forth uh every day at that at that middle school also uh just last week uh we have the opportunity to attend the ASA and
asba so that's the Arizona School administrators and the Arizona School boards Association uh joint annual conference the annual conference is the celebratory end ofe Gathering of school board members and District leaders from across the state uh we had two great keynote speakers uh focus on current Statewide education initiatives and really just an opportunity to network and share experiences with Ed other educational leaders across Arizona I want to thank Dr Lopez Miss maconis and Mr Willard uh who were able to attend this year's conference with me uh not just an opportunity for us to learn as a team but also grow together as a team during our few days also uh special congratulations to miss maconis who received the certificate of orientation from the Arizona school boards Association and that's really a testament uh to the
work that she's done since becoming a board member of becoming oriented to the role and becoming a member of Asda so congratulations Mr MC also congratulations to Mr Holt who received his associate of in recognition of the number of professional hours that he has put forth since beginning his term on the school board so congratulations to your hold on that recognition as well uh and then finally uh earlier this week uh Miss micronus and Mrs Kaufman the principal at Morana High School uh we had the opportunity to attend our second impact Morana uh education day or I should say program day uh impact Mirana is a program of the Mirana Chamber of Commerce and Community Partners that is an immersive experience that takes a cohort of business and Community leaders through an in-depth behind the
scenes look at the many Dynamic sectors of the Mirana Community uh this is a seven Monon program that is designed to gain a comprehensive understanding of all facets of Morana and learn how to be a more impactful Community leader driving the future of our community so amongst uh just under 30 participants it's nice that there's three of us that are representing uh the morani and F School District we had a great first program day which was the public safety program day where we were able to uh learn about the the inner workings of the Mirana Police Department Northwest fire uh as well as what's happening at the Puma county level with regards to Emergency Response uh this last Tuesday uh was was really a neat day as we did the Agriculture and Agri tourism program
day and if you think about the history of Mirana we really got into the history of ranching and farming and how that uh has evolved and now what we're seeing around our community with regards to Agri tourism think about the pumpkin patch uh think about uh some of the different dude ranches in the area um really just a nice way to continue to learn about our community that concludes my report for today thank you Dr streer next item is the consent agenda can I have a motion I move I move that we approve the consent agenda as presented any questions all those in favor I I next item is item I there is no unfinished business so we'll move to item J mrowki come on up good evening Dr Lopez members of the board Dr
streer senior staff and members who have joined us from the Morana Community um I'm here to present a addition to policy EBC on emergencies um the line that will be added um is uh honoring new state statute um passed by our legislature and the line reads emergency response plans developed by the school district governing boards are required to address how the school school and emergency responders will communicate with and provide assistance to students with disabilities we actually are already in compliance with this when we passed our Emergency Operations plan part two 28 pages of details on what we do and emergency res um emergency situations um a section of that a subsection of that is dedicated to identifying specifically what who those students are and the plans we have in place we have health plans
in place for all those students who need a special attention and so we're already in compliance thank you I have a motion I move that the governing board approved the revision to policy e emergencies I second do we have any questions all those in favor I I next item is Jade two Mr contorer thank you um tonight um will bring to you the fiscal year 24 budget um District expenditure budget revision number one the State of Arizona allows governing boards to revise their expenditure budgets throughout the school year to reflect actual carry forwards prior year expenditures actual student enrollment and interest earnings these were mere estimates when we actually um adopted the budget in July if you remember we actually propos a budget develop that budget in June so um we still have three months
of activity that affects this year's budget with those numbers that we just mentioned the district will have the ability to continue to do the um revisions to the expenditure budget when when we find necessary up until May 15 um and we would definitely be bringing another revision at this time the district is making adjustments um reflecting actual student enrollment and carry forward amounts um that was the largest impact of this budget that here um is before you um the Major Impact was in maintenance and operation we had an increase of over just over $2 million and in District additional assistance which is our Capital dollars it increased by just over a million dollars um that's the presentation for thank you do I have a motion the 202 I moved that the governing board approved the
0212023 2024 School District annual expenditure budget revision number one I second any questions all those in favor I hi next item is j3 Miss Rey good evening president Lopez members of the governing board Dr streer members of senior staff and our inperson and virtual audience this evening I am bringing forward five High School courses for consideration of approval by you all this evening the first course this and all of these courses have been approved by the educational services department um in collaboration with our High School principles as well as our CTE coordinator so the first course that we're asking you to approve is piano one2 this is a class that will be taught at Morana High School it is a year-long music performance course that is that is designed for beginning and intermediate students who
are interested in learning how to play the piano or keyboard I want to let you know that no musical experience is necessary and students do not have to provide their own piano in addition to piano one two we are also at this time requesting approval of piano 34 which would be the more advanced and intermediate and advanced compo um course that would be subsequent to piano one2 the next series of courses I'm going to request you to approve is our freshman athlete training that's freshman athlete training one two this is a course that also will be piloted at Marana High School next year this year-long course is recommended for any student who has prior participation or a strong desire to participate in a Mirana High School competitive sports team it will teach and challenge athletes
to reach new levels of Fitness Nutrition coordination speed strength joint stability and flexibility so they can reach their Optimum level of success in the sport of their choice in addition to the Freshman course we're also asking approval for the varsity and junior varsity advanced athlet training course both of these courses are out of the PE department at Mirah High the final course that I'm requesting your approval for is public service leadership and life- saving elective course this is a semester long course that has been a developed over the past couple of months in a collaboration with in collaboration with Pac County Parks and Rec as well as the town of Morana we and the members of the PE department at Mirana High School participated as as well as our CTE coordinator to put together a
high school course that allows students to develop the transferable skills that they could use in order to test for lifeguarding within our community as well as develop their leadership skills along the way so we're pretty excited about this course I'm personally very excited about this course as a former town of Mirana lifeguard and Mirana High swim coach uh the need for Aquatics programming has been increasing dramatically within the Mirana Community every single summer within minutes of opening every single slot for a youth in the Moran Community is completely filled and so the town has seen this need to increase aquatic programming as so and so has the county and so the town of Mirana has recently allocated $64 million to build a community center Just Over Yonder that will house not one but two in
incredible pools and Aquatic facilities and so the opportunity for our youth to be employed in our community is going to be increasing exponentially over the next couple of years so this course would help students learn the skills to test so they could actually serve as lifeguards for either the town of Rana or Pina County as well as bring in Rich CTE workplace professional skills and uh bring in Role Models within the piranha Community to really elate and lift up students in order to see the opportunity they have to lead Youth and programs within our uh Community while being employed as lifeguards thank you I have a motion I move that the governing board approve the new high school course proposal as presented I second any questions I do so for two things we point three
um when it comes to the actual lifeguarding courses is it taught by somebody who can sign off on their class work so they can go directly to take the test or do they still have to go through actal course work to then take the test so that there are multiple program there are multiple certifications for lifeguard training that you can earn star guard American Red Cross and so because we have different intergovernmental agencies that government agencies that utilize different certifications the beautiful part about the Morana Community is we had the leadership from those organizations come together design a course that was program agnostic so it was not necessarily connected to a program but really developed the skills that students would need to master in order to earn certification with the town of mirand or with
pumac County so they will be set up success for both so they can actually choose which agency if they would like to choose to certify as well as to apply for employment from so they so just to clarify so they still would have to go through they don't have to just take the test and do their prac say so go through the course work again both the town of morand andp County have committed to like a challenge course because the students will have gone through and done all of the skills the water skills as well as the book knowledge skills and taken practice tests it would just be more of a challenge course to go ahead and uh attempt to earn the certification perfect and then my next question is this already cons the CT
course in the state of Arizona or is this is this not technically a CTE course currently it's not a CTE course one of the things Mrs libert and I are looking at is could this at some point be an entry point course for the EMT program or one of the other public service programs offered through CTE right now our commitment was to embed those workplace skills so that the students who are leaving this course not only have the greatest possible chance of earning employment but also being successful in that employment and then with that are they going to be so it says public leadership are they going to be working with the town specifically to be able to do like leers actual opportunities inside the town or is it only based at the high school
it's a great question so we're actually bringing Town leadership and leaders throughout the community to the students and so we anticipate uh we we currently have a whole host of guest leaders including uh the mayor we have um the town manager we have our chief of police who was a graduate of the of moranah high and uh we even have uh your very own Dr streer on the list of uh future guest speakers of this course you've been volen told I have one question Hunter are you finished so on the on the lifeguarding do we have existing staff who are certified to teach this do we need to come outside community in to teach this as former lifeguard as well I didn't know that about you so we are incredibly grateful for the generosity of
those of those partners that we have and in fact members of the town of Mirana staff the town is act is actually donating their employees to teach the course and so the individuals from the town of Morana who certify lifeguards for the town are going to be the primary instructors P County their instructor will be supporting as well throughout and the one of the one of the things that we're really excited about is to make sure that we bring uh members of the PE faculty at Mirana high are also excited about getting certified so our hope is that not only can we get members of the Morana High School staff certified and me other members of musd teaching Corp certified but then that one or more of them will become a trainer so we'll actually
make this a self-sufficient program moving forward thank you the town also said that admin was gonna do it because they heard you used to do that years ago I'm very excited yes all right all those in favor I next item is item four conduct executive session can I have a motion I move at the governing board can conduct the executive executive session pursuant to ARS 38-43 or3 A1 for for personnel relating to the superintendent valuation I second all those in favor hi so we will be going into executive session and then coming out and um adjourning so I just want to wish everybody happy holiday get some rest um I know everybody needs it so take care that's
