001All [Applause] [Music] right, we'll go ahead and call the meeting to order. >> I'm assuming >> here. Sarah, >> Doug >> here, >> Lori. Carrie >> here, >> Jeff >> here. All right. And if everyone will stand for the pledge of allegiance and then we'll remain standing for a moment of silence for armed services personnel. >> I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Thank you. Are there any items to be added or changed to the agenda? There is not. >> Move on to correspondence and commendation. We have a thank you letter from Gaylord Community Schools to Neil Javetsky and the Mimic Agency for their donation of caramel apples. Now we
002will move on to building updates. Mr. Kek will update us on the sex education advisory board. >> I'm going to pull this over here if you don't mind. just because um so I apologize I was going to update you on Monday during the workshop but again we had a a wonderful professional development that day and I was not able to so I said I would do it tonight so Brian let you know that um couple updates we had a sex advisory board meeting two weeks ago and I want to update you on the progress there and then give you some um additional updates. Um, before I update, I want to uh review the lenses that the sex advisory board established a couple years ago that everything has to run through these lenses. Every curriculum adoption,
003anything that we do in our classes, they don't match the lenses. They don't move on for consideration. So, let me review those briefly. At GIS, the lenses start with its abstinence only. So, if there's curriculum or anything updates, if it's not absinence only, it does not move on. It correlates with the Michigan AK correlation document. Um you all have a copy of that. If you don't, I will resend that to you. But that's basically um a set of rules that are established by the legislature that we have to follow um as far as sex ed meaning we have to have a sex ed advisory board. We have to you know certain things like that. Um we teach HIV health healthy relationship consent and puberty. So that's GIS. Gaylord Middle School and Gaylord High School. Um,
004one difference is they're both absencebased. So, it's not absence only, it's absencebased. Michigan AK correlation, um, healthy relationship, consent, HIV, and puberty. The only difference between the high school and middle school is we do teach condom use at the high school. Um, those those are the differences there. So with that being said, um you know that we adopted new curriculum at GIS and we overwhelmingly um positive support from the community and families. We had a couple students that uh the parents opted out not because of the curriculum. They did not come to theformational meeting. They just said we just choose not to do it. Um so the next step that we decided we're going to do this year is they were going to review the high school and middle school. We reviewed that curriculum through
005the committees and the sex advisory board um unanimously decided that the current curriculums align with our lenses align we were doing and are not recommending a new adoption at this time. So we're set there for another two or three years uh till we have to meet again. Any questions about that or curriculum? Okay, moving on. One more update. So, um I know that you've heard about and you've read about and you've seen on on um the news and media and certain things the department of ed is looking at updating their sex ed and health at standards. The last time they did that update was in 2007. Um I have gotten um I've been in contact with our health consultant um Helen and you you've met Helen in these meetings. She has talked to state legislators,
006department of ed, the state superintendent, and she drafted, well, she didn't draft, all of the health consultants in the state of Michigan drafted some talking points that, um, I just I thought would be a good idea to share with the board at this time. Um, so, um, I'm just going to kind of go through these talking points. Changes of standards are voted on by members of the Michigan Board of Education. These changes so far in draft form, and we can expect revisions based on public feedback. So, that's from the Department of Ed. So, right now, they're in draft form. There is a meeting on Thursday. I don't know if they're going to vote on it or not, but that's the latest update as of October 30th. This is a big one. Changes to the standards
007do not change Michigan law policy and school district policy around the approval process for sexed health curriculum. Eleas, which is us, determine what content with sexual health instruction they will include in their health education program. So that's why we have our SAB. We still have the right to do that. And parents will still have the right to review sex ed curriculum prior to instruction and can opt their child out from all or some of the sex ed education HIV AIDS instruction. So they wanted us to know that that if they update the standards we can still approve and disapprove what we use. Um they make this statement standards are not curriculum. Districts have control over the materials and methods they use to cover health education content. So, back to our SAB. If they update the
008standards, it's still up to the school board ultimately what we do and do not teach. Um, again, this is from uh their talking points was provided us um addressing LGBTQ plus and concerns in the new draft of the standards. These topics are limited to sexual health, making them subject to the parent out opt- out process. These topics do not begin until the sixth or eighth grade standards. So, if you've heard that they're in the lower elementary, they're not. I've reviewed the standards myself. They they begin in sixth through eight, and we can still opt out of them if we choose as a board. The state board of education has not set a date to vote on the new standards. Um, and they will not be implementing new health standards in the 2526 school year. So,
009there will no be not be any updates to them this year. Um, and also, uh, they added this. Our district does not have any currently approved curriculum that covers the topics of gender identity and expression and sexual orientation. News and updates. As of October 28th, the Michigan House Oversight Committee passed a resolution 1047 against on party lines, House Resolution 195 to oppose a proposed Michigan Health Education Standards Framework and urge the Michigan Department of Ed to reddraft or the Michigan State Board of Education to reject these standards that happened on October 28th. Here was their response. Um, a resolution is a document that expresses the will of the House or the Senate. House resolutions are not binding law but rather express the collective sent sentiment of the house on particular issues. Resolutions are urged uh
010are used to urge state agencies or the congress to take certain actions to formally approve certain plans of government agencies to conduct certain legislative business or to establish study committees to examine these issues. The responsibility of voting on the standards falls within the Michigan Board of Education, not the House of Representatives or Senate. So, if these standards are adopted, it is the board of education that chooses to do those. Um, and again, on October 30th, the Michigan School Health Coordinators Association released these statements on the framework. We understand the perspective of parents and caregivers who do not want their children to receive sexual health education in the school setting. Importantly, as clarified with the Michigan Department of Ed, the proposed standards do not change the law. Parents and caregivers will continue to have the right
011to opt their child out of any sex instruction. Local school boards and districts retain the full authority over if, when, and how sex education is offered. And districts must continue to provide notification, transpar transparency, and access to review materials and curriculum. And again, they're meeting this Thursday. So, that's the latest and greatest. That's what I know about it. I've read all the standards. Um, I'm not putting my opinion on anything. I'm just stating that we as a a district and a school board and a sex ed advisory board will still have full control over what's taught to our our children and when. Any questions on that? Okay. I will probably get more information after the meeting on the 13th and I will update in December. >> Thank you. >> You're welcome. Thank you. >> All
012right. Preschool. Carla, you have the floor. >> Thank you. >> Good evening. Preschool has been busy like usual. This last month we had our preschool family fun night on October 21st and that was a lot of fun. The children got to paint pumpkins and it was just a group. We had a really great turnout. Had a lot of fun with that. This Friday we start parent teacher conferences. So our preschool teachers do meet with parents starting in preschool to go over what they're learning and uh see the classrooms and setting the tone for the rest of the year. as far as their academics go. Um, following up on attendance from last month, I know we had everybody talking about the importance of attendance. I really liked what our district did this year and sending out
013um the notice about, you know, the importance of attending, you know, how absences affect children. And so I included that um it was like a flyer. I included that in my preschool um newsletter in September. And I'm happy to report that we've really had very very few absences and tardies this year compared to other years. And I think that helped set the tone. So now most of any absences are because of illness and everything. So I commend the district for sending that out right at the beginning of the year because I feel like that really helped set the tone for the rest of the year. Thank you. >> Thank you. >> Diane South Maple. >> Hi. Good evening. So, to continue on with the attendance theme, at South Maple, we have 75% of our students
014who are in good standing with their attendance, which means they have between zero and four absences to this point in the year. Um, of that 75%, we have 54 students, which equates to 15% of our population that have perfect attendance. So, they have attended every day. We had an attendance assembly on Friday where the the class in each grade level that had the highest number of perfect attendance. So those yellow stars um last Friday was our first assembly where a class got to in each grade level got to win like a special prize or an activity. Some selected they had to spin this fun wheel and a prize wheel and um there was um a class movie day. They got to choose pajamas for the day and lots of other fun things. So that created
015a lot of excitement around attendance. So, we're hoping to see a continued trend in the positive with our attendance. Um, coming up in a couple weeks right before Thanksgiving, we've partnered with the high school medock program and they're going to do a teddy bear clinic with our first grade students where students can bring a teddy bear to school. Um, they'll let students go through a variety of medical tools that maybe they might not be so friendly about um going to an appointment. They get to look at and use a stethoscope. They get to look at and use um a blood pressure cough um a pulse tool. um and then just tried to create some le lessen the anxiety for students about going to the doctor. So the high school had partnered with us. They're coming.
016There's the students from the med program are going to run four stations with um every first grade class in our building. So that's super exciting. And then um something else that we're really excited about is our therapy dog Frankie will start coming to South Maple. So, this is Frankie and he is um a burn doodle and he's going to start coming on Friday afternoons and he's going to be hanging out in our counseling department with the counselor to start. We're taking it nice and easy. Um he'll be there for a couple hours, a couple of every other Friday um to start and then we'll go from there. I know that he's been visiting the hospital and it's been um pretty awesome. So, we're pretty excited to have Frankie at South Maple to love and support
017our kids and our staff. So, yeah. Any questions? Have a great Monday. >> Thank you. >> Have like a school of kids. >> All right. North Ohio Celeste. So I'll approach and just share with you if you want to just pass them down. Um this is uh Seth McNamera does a artist of the month. And so the kids get their picture taken. And so I'm just sharing with you our September and our October artist of the month. Um and then obviously we'll have one for November and so on. Um, and just so you can see that it's a fun thing. The kids get very excited about it. Um, and the artwork in the background is really interesting. Some of it is like coming off the P 3D. Uh, so it's it's just a a great
018thing. It's a great board in our our building for people to see. Um, we following the same same theme on attendance. Um, we had 74% of our students have that zero to four days absent up to this point in the year. Um, so we would say they're in the green and uh of that 74% 14% of those students in North Ohio have perfect attendance. So no ties and have been here every day. Um, another positive kind of theme along that attendance and maybe you saw the post about it, but we had a really well-attended family game night last Wednesday. Uh, staff volunteer their time and their space and uh, students and families come. They had pizza and were able to play educational games. Um, and it was just a like you could close your eyes
019and walk through the building and the kids are laughing. Families are laughing. They're playing games with their teachers. Some of them brought older siblings and so the older sibling might have been playing a game with a former teacher. Um, it was just really a lot of fun. So, if you haven't had a chance, I think Caitlyn got those pictures posted today. So, you'll see lots of smiling faces. and that um we hosted over 250 people um 76 students and so it was about 20% of our our student population came u but there were far more students than just those 76 North Ohio kids because there were lots of other other kids that came with so good >> thank you >> Carla with GIS >> hello thanks for having me tonight um I'm just going to
020give you a quick um couple of papers that kind of show the updates First, I'd like to recognize Lincoln Tobbert as our student of the month. He is a fourth grader. We have our uh Blades and Blue Devils, Leila Lemon, Iris Brown, and Conrad Klein, one in fifth, one in fourth, fifth, and sixth. We like to celebrate that those amazing behaviors and kids just making excellent choices all the time. Um jumping to attendance you will see that we have um 78% of our students with very good attendance and um of 120 with a per perfect attendance which is just under 21%. So 20% of our students have perfect attendance up to this point. So really um the attendance program that we have set in place is really working well and we're excited to see what
021the data looks like on that. And then we also have a brand new PTO. We've always had a PTO, but now we have a parent board. So, you'll see in that um the bo the elected board members who are really pushing forward and doing some great things for the staff and for the kids alike. So, I'm excited to see the positive things that happen with that as well. And then I have Riker Hicks with me. You'll see on the um last page. Do you want to come up? Riker Rker approached me early, I would say, early in the school year and said he was a boy scout and he wanted to do a service project and take the lead on it. So he got his troop together, troop 122, with the help of his, um,
022father, Robert Picks, and his brothers, um, Parker and EMTT, and his whole troop. And they, on November 5th, in the cold built a new Gaga ball pit for our crew at our school. Everybody was cheering for him at our assembly on Friday. They were very excited, but his leadership is um top top-notch, and we're so proud of that work you put together. So, thank you for doing that for our students and for our school. and he's definitely a leader. >> All right, >> Riker, could you come up? We'd like to shake your hand and thank you in person. Please start over. >> She's like, "Oh, man. >> What a great idea. Good job." >> Yeah. >> Awesome job, buddy. >> Thank you very much. >> Great job. Hey, Reker, if you got you you're welcome
023to stay, but if you want to go home and do your homework, you're you're welcome to go leave now. >> Build practice building your next project. >> Yeah. >> All right. Next up, middle school. Corey. >> Yeah. All right. Uh well, so we'll continue the theme, excuse me, with uh with attendance. Um so when we're looking at attendance for the quarter, um we looked at absences four or less. Um and we have 81% of our students have four or less and a whopping 29% have uh perfect attendance which is huge for us. Um I also want to highlight uh some excellence in academics. So I ran some reports for grades. Um we have 75 students with all A's or A minuses. That's uh 17% of our school has all A's or A minuses. And then
024I also ran um all A's and B's and that's 37% of our school have all A's and B's which is huge. Um, so for those students that have all A's and A minuses, we're going to do an academic lunchon on Thursday, uh, where during fourth hour, they'll be able to go to the cafeteria and celebrate their academic success and we'll bring in some food for them. Um, some other highlights that have happened over the last month. Um, eighth grade band had their annual Halloween parade. That went really well. They sounded awesome. Um, and then we did uh Halloween as a spirit day, too. And it was really cool because all the kids were dressed up and then the band was dressed up. It was awesome to see. Um, we have our Veterans Day assembly tomorrow.
025So, we've been busting our butts to try to get ready for that and we're excited. So, we should have uh the whole thing going tomorrow. And so, everybody's welcome to come if you want to check it out. It's going to be awesome. Um, October students of the month. So, the theme for October was integrity. Uh, integrity means that your choices reflect your values even when the choices are difficult. It means you're honest. You keep your promises and present your uh present yourself genuinely. And so we had two eighth graders and two seventh graders. And those students were Barry, Noah Maer, Zoe Smith, and Rowan Hart. Um we also recognize a staff member every month. Um so usually pick a staff member or a teacher and then we have some students say some nice things about
026how they're doing. Um and so our staff member of the month for October was u Mr. Alan Daw. Um, and here's what some students had to say about Mr. Daw. Um, Jaylen Seal said, "Mr. Dah is a great teacher because he'll help you again if you don't understand something. He makes sure that we're on task, but also makes sure that we're learning uh, and what we're learning is as fun as it can be." Um, Aniston Holmes said, "Mr. Dah is a great teacher. He always helps you with whatever you need and whenever you need it. He always puts students first and actually cares about our grades and make making all lessons fun. Overall, he's a great teacher and even better person. And then Nolan Kek said, I think Mr. Dah is a very great teacher
027and he always comes up with fun ideas for experiments. Um, and then my last update is over the last month too, uh, we kind of restructured our student council. Um, so it's got 18 members on it now. Um and within those members they elected their uh officers. And so those officers are president is Weston Bolter, vice president Lydia Bellow, secretary Rowan Jacobs, and Treasurer Jet Mcnite. Um and they're they've worked together super hard. They're basically running the show tomorrow for Veterans Day. Um so they've pretty much taken complete control of that whole situation and we've been rehearsing over the last couple weeks and it's going to be awesome. So, I'm excited to see them kind of take that show on and and really show the ownership of that and it's been huge and they've been
028really good to it u coordinating all the spirit days and I mean it's been incredible to see how they brought the school together and and really included everybody. So, that's what I got for middle school. >> Thank you. >> All right. Last but not least, Mr. Byer, the high school. >> He's kind of least. >> All right. a lot of stats today, but um I'll start with kind of the unmeasurables uh athletics and our drama and theater programs and band programs. I'm a big believer that our extracurricular activities bring our students in. More importantly, it builds pride um in our school. And so the more students we have involved, the better our school uh is. So, we uh athletically in the fall, we had a number of our programs either have already competed outside of
029our standard regular schedule. Um and we have a few that are bound to be competing um you know at the at the state level here coming up. So, football team obviously made it to the playoffs. Uh we got knocked out just uh on Friday, but anytime you can extend your season a little bit longer is great for the kids. Um, so I would imagine there's going to be a lot of uh individual accolades coming when we have a a season that successful. Um, our swim team is continuing to to break records. Um, and we anticipate a very good showing at the state tournament. Um, this is probably the one of the best seasons that they've done um, in conference play in in a while. Our soccer team um, you know, had a winning season uh,
030first time in a number of years. Um, volleyball is in a a rebuilding stage, but I think that they have a great uh plan moving forward. Um, and then one uh individual uh that we wanted to recognize is Katie Birkshshire. She had a tremendous uh senior year. She just committed to Central. Um she had a lot of options, but um we we're glad that she chose Central and closer to home and probably exactly what she needs at the time. but she got second at the the state level, but she is um has one of the best times like top 10 ever for that that running. So, it's huge. And and she lost to a a young lady that set the state record. So, I guess if you're going to lose, that's that's the right way
031to do it. Um she's clearly faster than me. No problem about that. Um, other things that we had, uh, we had, uh, let's see, roughly 450 folks pay for tickets to come to our, uh, performance, uh, over the week. We had show week last week for drama. Um, if you didn't get to see it, it was a a good story about a family that had separated. Um, and then they were competing with the same recipes in a restaurant and lots of chaos ensues. Um, so it was a good show. I think the weather kind of put a little damper on our Sunday. uh matinea that's usually very very well attended and I don't think we had the numbers due to the snow. Um and then in band uh we had a number of students that
032had tried out for the the the state level. Um and we had eight out of our 11 um honors kids. Uh they try out they have to do sheet music and a bunch of other things. Um well outside of my understanding, but eight out of our 11 were able to secure those spots. and um the flute section, we have the top three chairs um which is a very big deal at the the band level. So that's that's kind of what's going on the outside of stuff, but I wanted to share some attendance numbers and some academic numbers with you as well. Um when we're looking at attendance, we got roughly um kind of the same thing in that zero to four uh absences. We have 77% of our population fits under that and within that
03327% of our population. So roughly 235 students still have perfect attendance right now at the high school which that's significant at the high school because we know that there's jobs and there's lots of other things that kind of take them away at the high school level. So 235 is a great number to share. Um academically we uh you know now that quarter one's done we're able to kind of look at the impact of uh is ARC helping but more importantly is our attendance helping and I think that we can get an emphatic yes it is. Um when we looked at our passing rates um we actually decreased um our failing classes by 17%. So to give you a number, that's 74 less classes that were failed quarter 1 this semester compared to numbers in the
034fall last year. I wasn't anticipating it being that big, but it's huge. Um 14% um decrease in failing students. So that represents roughly 27 less students that are failing classes this year compared to last year's data. And then a big whopping number is we had a 21% decrease in students that are failing three or more classes. And to give you an idea, that's 14 less students that are failing multiple classes. So it's working. Um when we get to the litmus test from students, a lot of them are taking advantage of that arc time. Um and so those numbers are benefiting. So that's what I got for you today. >> Awesome. >> Thank you. Thank you to all our administrators. Now up is our first public input and we have Susan Lubbert. >> You have the
035podium. >> As a reminder, you have three minutes. We won't address you unless we'll at a later time. >> Right. Okay. Two things. First thing is how come you guys don't have a microphone? The speakers that everybody can hear. public meetings with Americans Disability Act is requirement. The library uses for their meetings for the commissioners. You can do like a karaoke thing, a portable mic or something. So, we need to hear a lot of people cannot hear what you're saying with the board. And also what we are saying because we're talking to you so the people back here are not going to hear us. Second one is referring to what is it? Dennis K. >> It is. >> Yeah. when he was talking about the education, it is not going to change the sex education
036which is the law with the sex education advisory board that will stay intact. What this does their health standards is changing the health curriculum so which we all know is mandatory for graduation for all students in the state of Michigan. What they are putting in here basically anything they can't pass in the sex ed which could be having them to being activists for groups other groups of different genders and so on. Also takes the parental rights out because it's required mandate. You don't take it you don't graduate. So that's what they're putting. It's in the health education standards is what they're changing. And they're putting a lot of the different things. They're training that the kids to make decisions without parents approval. That's 8.4 SAS section 4 page 34. Training the kids to become LGBTQ
037plus advocates and employs critical theory language to that teachu children about health equity, sexbased stigma, LGBTQ injustices. That's 5.6 6 C page 27 and 8.1 CH page 30 promotes personal family and community health well-being through fostering empathy inclus inclusivity and respect around issues related to gender and sexuality teaching children to support school and community programs that affirm LGBTQ plus behavior and develop a plan for making changes in a community advocacy and health protection 12.6 6H and 12.6 6 C page 51 also it also affects teachers parents who don't have these religious you know because of religious concerns who don't agree with that teachers are going to have the same situation they will be forced to teach this also what will be happening if the teachers do not want to p to teach this they will
038be leaving which will create a problem for you you will have teachers lose these you'll have people leaving the area and another school board does not have authority to make this. These standards were based on Massachusetts standards. We are not Massachusetts. We are Michigan. That's where they came from. These standards. >> Thank you. >> That is all the public input we have for tonight. So now we'll move on to consent agenda. We have board minutes from November 3rd uh committee of the whole board meeting minutes. We have treasurers fund, general fund and athletic fund bills in the amount of 3.1 million, cafeteria fund bills in the amount of 129,000. Sinking fund bills in the amount of 140,000 and prior period adjustments of uh $1,200. And we have new hires. We have Christina Pudvan and Nadine
039Beam will be our new uh hires. And we'll um recognize them at the uh end of towards the end of our meeting for uh introductions is so that is the end of our consent agenda. I'll make a motion to approve the consent agenda. >> I'll second it. >> Does anybody have any questions on the consent agenda? >> Rachel, >> yes. >> Katie, >> yes. >> Doug, >> yes. >> Carrie, >> yes. >> Jack, >> yes. >> Carry 5. >> Thank you. New and unfinished business. Part that everybody's uh would probably like to hear. Now, we will have uh staff introductions. I know I saw Miss Kalper here. So, who's going to introduce her? >> Please come forward. >>
043Oh, yeah. You go through the spiel. You're on the hot seat for just a little bit. >> Okay. >> We are excited to bring Constants uh to the central office. She's not a stranger to the district. She's been at the middle school as a secretary for the past year and we're not ashamed to say we're stealing her and taking her over. Uh an administrative um degree in business Oh, I'm sorry. an associates degree in business administration and 12 plus years experience in that area. >> And one thing we're going to try to improve with her is her modesty. I'll say um I'm surprising her right now, but actions speak louder than words. So part of the interview process, we administer a test, actually a written test, and she interviewed very well. But I'll say the
044interview committee was quite surprised by her performance on the test. Um I think she was quite modest in her interview as to her abilities. So we are excited to bring her on board and put her to use at the central office and see what she can do for us. So thank you. >> Thank you. >> Congratulations. >> Thank you.
