Good evening everyone. It is Wednesday, August 13th at 6:30. I call this meeting to order. Lisa, can you please call the role? Robert Downey, present. Patty Catra, present. Carolyn Lopez, present. Ben Owens, present. Shante Rothschild. Thank you. We now move on to N1C pledge of allegiance and the vast principal suchor the leaders in the pledge maybe with Ramy although they may not say that much support to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Thank you. Now move on item 1 D. Adoption of the agenda. Motion. Second. There we go. Lisa, can we have a motion second to adopt the agenda? Ben Owens. Hi. Caramel Lopez. Hi. Patty Catra. Hi. Robert Downey. I. So moved. We
now move on to item two, superintendence report. Dr. Lupman. Thank you, President Downey. Through the vision of Principal Miller and the teamwork of the facilities, maintenance, business, and ESS departments, a courtyard at Maricopa Wells Middle School has been transformed into a safe, inviting learning space with synthetic turf and other upgrades. Extend this project. It extends learning opportunities beyond the classroom. This school year, MUSD introduced Wellable, a free health and wellness platform for benefit eligible employees. Well links the popular smartphone and smartwatch apps, making it simple to track activity, join wellness challenges, and earn rewards. Our first district-wide challenge, the Hydrate for Health Challenge, kicked off on August 1, motivating participants to boost daily water intake with a splash of friendly competition. We look forward to seeing how Wellable inspires healthy habits and active lifestyles across
the district in pursuit of our goal to be the healthiest district in the state. One of the metrics in the MUSD strategic plan is is to have 100% of teachers be appropriately certified for the position they hold. In pursuit of that goal, our human resources department recently hosted a certification fair with 30 attendees and representatives from six partner institutions. The event sparked interest from promising prospective hires and helped current staff take the next steps towards their appropriate certification. I had the pleasure of joining assistant superintendent of administrative services, that's Tracy Pastor, to surprise Santa Cruz Elementary and Maricopa Virtual Academy as the winners of our MUSD friendliest school awards based on a secret shopper visit at the end of last school year at MVA. The registar Melissa Alvarado demonstrated excellence by personally guiding a prospective
parent through the online enrollment process. At Santa Cruz, receptionist Sarah Armstrong's warmth came shining through in every phone call. Both schools set the gold standard for exceptional customer service. Well done. Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation, Butterfield Elementary School is growing its garden program into a plant-filled inclusive learning space for all students. Plans include a sensory garden with raised beds, aromatic herbs, textured plants, and pollinator friendly flowers designed with special attention to inclusivity. A new edible garden will offer vegetables, fruits, and herbs for nutrition education and gardento lessons. With shaded seating, irrigation, composting, and curriculum connections, students will enjoy hands-on learning all year long. And that's my report. Thank you, Dr. Lutman. We now move on to M3 governing board members report. Member Owens. Thank you, President Downey. Uh, as
we start school, fall is always late summer, always an extremely busy time getting back in the swing of school and everything and, uh, sports starting up, fall sports starting up, um, that kind of thing. So, um, as a I haven't done much as a board member the past few weeks, but as a parent, um, lots of stuff going on. Um, I've been helping our, uh, high school swim coaches put together, uh, the first invite, Sonorin swim invite in, uh, late October. So, we're just working on some final details on that. So, um, we talk about the gold standard, uh, across the district and that's one of those things that, um, uh, I'm super excited about and, um, that we can, um, support our support our, uh, athletes there. So, um, that's probably the biggest thing
taking up my time at this time. Thank you. Thank you, Member Lopez. I don't have Thank you, President Downey. I don't have any um activities to report this this time around, but there are two things that one, as a reminder, as now school has started, um please be mindful of the school zones and you're driving through them. I found people passing in the middle lane and um it's it's 15 miles an hour, so we don't need to be running over little ones. Just be mindful, please. Um, and then I'm so happy I watched Maricopa's Wells um, turf like from beginning to end. I I live right around that area. I drove by it every day as they were doing it over the summer. It is magnificent. I am I want to go and just chill
out there. It's wonderful. So, good job. Good job. And that's it. Thank you, Vice President Crochet. Thank you, President Downey. Um, like Mr. Owen said, you know, the beginning of the school year is the beginning of all of the meetings resuming. Um, I did it, um, the Rotary has resumed their meetings, so I do that every other Tuesday. Um, and, uh, for those parents who are still wondering what to do for the before and after school care of their children, the Boys and Girls Club of the Sunord are still accepting registrations and you can get that information directly from your school office. Um, I think it's awesome how the Maropa Wells, how that laid out. Um, it looks amazing. Um, I love the grant for the gardens and I hope for an invitation for a
tour and participation soon. I'm excited to be a part of that. And also, you know, I just want to remind all of our staff because I see them out there every morning and every afternoon um, you know, with the parent pickup just making sure that they're staying hydrated. It's awfully hot out there and I see them out there just, you know, the students are kept inside where it's nice and cool, but our staff is out there um in the heat. So, thank you for everything that you do. Um and please stay hydrated. Thank you. I'll just say dto and all the positive points save some time. Um now move on to item four, call to the public. And we do have two cards, so I need to read this. Members of the board may not
discuss any item that is not specifically identified on the agenda. Therefore, pursuant to ARS 38431.01 I. Action taken as a result of public comment will be limited to directing directing staff to study the matter responding to any criticism or scheduling the matter for a future agenda. The board requests that all comments be limited three minutes or less and the public refrain from use of speech or language that is offensive or inappropriate pursuant to board policy 3-203. Please state your name for the record. And first up we have Hazel, Chloe, Gabrielle, and Ramy. Sir, good evening fellow board members. My name is Hazel Lee. This is my name is Chloe A. My name is Gabriel Mas. And we also have Ramy with us today. We are students of Maricopa High School. And we would like to
formally invite you all to our 70th year anniversary celebration at Maricopa High School. It'll be on September 5th from 5 to 7:00 p.m. We will have entertainment and we will have food. This event will be sponsored by two clubs that are at our high school, DECA and Meta. A little bit about DECA is we are a national organization that creates young entrepreneurs and teaches them leadership and business skills. Now, Chloe will tell you a little bit about Meta. Meta is a studentrun organization and it is building leaders for uh the for America and it is run by Hispanic children, Latin Latin American and Hispanic children and we are learning leadership skills and what we do in the club is we volunteer in our community and we try to make our community safer and more active
than before. So, we'd like to thank you all for your time and listening to us, and we hope to see you guys there. Thank you. I move on. Priscilla and Brandy. Good evening members of the board and Dr. Lopeman. I'm Brandy Hman from Be a Awesome and on behalf of the Be Awesome team, I want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for another year of partnership and your generosity of inind donation of office and facility space. This support helps us keep overhead low, maximize the funds we can dedicate to the programs, and then extend our impact into the community. Thanks to this partnership, last year we served 219 fourth and fifth graders in our afterchool life skills-based space camp program across multiple elementary schools. Local teens and young adults gained work experience as trained mentors delivering
evidence-based curriculum and approximately 250 family members attended graduation ceremonies throughout the year. A third party evaluation showed that participants increased their perception of harm regarding substances 6.6% 6% for marijuana, 10% for underage drinking, and 7% for ecigarettes. Most notably, there was a 33% increase in students talking with their parents about these substances. We also partnered with MEES, Maricopa Elementary School, to provide the seven habits of highly effective families along with them workshop. Um, this workshop was given to 31 parents with half attending every single session that they were signed up for. 85 um% strongly agreed that these workshops would improve communication with their children and support healthier family relationships. This program was offered in both English and Spanish-sp speakaking families. We tabled at both middle schools and at one high school throughout the year, reaching
approximately 3,000 students with age appropriate drug trivia and information about substances most commonly used by teens. Through our community survey, we were able to evaluate that by the fourth quarter, we found that 76 to 80% of residents reported seeing messages about harmful effects of underage drinking, marijuana, and ecigarette use. And we're pretty sure that the tableing helped with that. Um, by increasing awareness of the risks of these substances, we aim to shift a culture around teen substance use and ultimately decrease youth ab substance abuse altogether. None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of community partners like MUSD. We are honored by this partnership and look forward to another year of programs, strategies, and opportunities that strengthen youth and families here in Maricopa. There's much more, but we only got 40 seconds. But
if your campus was not involved and you want them involved this year, I'll be right over there. Thank you. Thank you. And I move on to item five, consent agenda. Motion to approve as written. Second, Lacy, we have a motion to second. Ben Owens. Hi. Carol Lopez. Hi. Patty Catra. Hi. Robert Downey. I so moved. We now move on to item six, action items, specifically six 6A, discussion and possible approval of the personnel schedule. Mr. Beckett. Thank you, President Downey, members of the governing board and Dr. Lman. You have our personnel schedule for tonight. Open to take any questions you have at this point. And he always looks at me. Mr. Beckett, I only have a couple and they're going to be really easy. Okay. Thank you. Um, just item number 17. Is that a
full-time or a part-time position? I believe it's a full-time position. Is it a It is. Okay. And then on the stipen schedule number 43 to 45, was that from summer or is that ongoing throughout the school year? It was for curriculum planning. And I'm going to have to get back to you on that unless Dr. Scott can answer that. So, it looks like it's curriculum planning for the high schools. I was just curious if that was just left over from the summer or if that's moving forward all year long. Thank you. Um, and then you know my last two questions that I always ask at this time of this school year, how many certified positions do we have currently open? Two. Two. That is fantastic. Um, we're very very happy about that. And are they
specialized positions? They are. And so my next question is I I'm assuming we have long-term subs in those positions. How is that affecting the class if these are specialized classes? It's a great question. Uh, thank you, member Catra. Anytime that we have a substitute in the classroom, they're not appropriately certified for the for the class, obviously. offer as much support and help as we can to the to that substitute teacher to help them make that class successful. But it's a challenge. There's there's no substitute for a good teacher is the tagline we always hear and that's the accuracy. So again, our our efforts are trying to secure an appropriately certified staff member. And again, we appreciate our substitutes work, but it's not the same. Okay. All right. Thank you. You're welcome. There no other questions.
I make a motion that we approve the HR schedule. Second. Lee, we have a motion to second. Ben Owens. Hi. Cameron Lopez. Hi. Patty Catra. I. Robert Downey. I so moved. We now move on 6B. Discussion and possible approval of the superintendence K8 school number one boundary committee. Miss Pastor. Thank you. Good evening, President Downey, Dr. Lman, board members and guests. Tonight I'm bringing forward the scope of work for the superintendent's uh K8 number one boundary committee. This committee will uh exist will um be made up of administrators, staff, parents, community members and students. And our task will be to review demographic reports and uh study our current attendance boundaries and ultimately recommend boundaries for our first KA. The work will follow all statutory requirements in board policies 5101 and 5101A and that will include
public meetings, advanced notifications, posted maps, and then ultimately formal board adoption. The committee will meet through uh September and October. What we will do is establish guiding principles, review those demographic reports, and then draft boundary scenarios. In November, we will then hold public meeting where we will present the upgra updated demographic data and proposed boundaries and gather community input. Final recommendations will be brought back to the board um in January for action with the approved boundaries communicated then widely and posted on our our website. The process is designed to be transparent, inclusive, datadriven, and to ultimately ensure that our new K8 opens with boundaries that serve our students and community as it should. Any questions? Actually, I do. Um, I love the fact that we engage all of our stakeholders when we have the opportunity
to form these committees. Just a couple of concerns is to make sure that when we do that makeup of stakeholders that it's not the same people from the different committees that we allow more participation from different people because I know we're going to have various committees um going into the next processes especially going forward with the next K through8 school. So my question regarding the boundary committee is I understand they're going to be taking in not only the boundaries with our demographics for the new K through8 school and also our minor boundary adjustment but then we're going to do this again the following year when we have another K through8 school. Is there any way that they will be able to like incorporate like going forward? We're always futureminded and uh keep uh our eyes
on the fact that this is disruptive. So um one of the things that the boundary committee will uh define are some guiding principles and one of the guiding principles will be when possible um let's not move the same students twice because we have a vision for the next opening and this is something that Miss Pastor assured me you know that along with other guiding principles we would keep in mind Well, and I know we haven't chosen the site for the next school either, so that's that's that does not help you either. So, but I was just curious. Yeah. Thank you. When um when does the boundary need to be done by or when will it be done by? So, um if everything goes as proposed, we'll be bringing the final recommendation to the board at
the first board meeting in January. It will be ineffective though as of next the following school year. So when we open school, right? Yes. Okay. Thank you. So that should give us sufficient time to communicate to the families that are impacted and um make sure that everyone has an opportunity to um ask questions that they're understandably going to have. Can I ask one more question? Of course. So this it's my first time. Hang on. Um, when you have a boundary committee, does that include figuring out transportation and all of that? Right. Okay. I just wanted to Yeah. Okay. Perfect. Okay. He's he's perfect guy to has those dates on his calendar already. Okay. Thank you. So, uh, my question for you is surrounding the demographic study, and I don't remember right off hand that the
the gentleman that does that for us. What's that? Applied economics. Yeah, there you go. Applied economics. Yep. So, when was the last study done? So, he finishes his studies for us. uh uh typically after 40th day. Um so the same thing will happen this year. Um we will have another annual report uh that looks at the 40th day but um we've uh we've had conversations with him that are ongoing and to a degree they study demographics and changes throughout the entire school year. Gotcha. Okay. I wasn't I couldn't remember if it was a study that was done three years ago, you know, when when when we did desert sunrise because obviously things change um even in six months. So yes, we have had um applied economics complete a pretty comprehensive report annually for some time.
Okay, great. Thank you. There's no other questions. I'll make a motion to approve. Second. Lisa, we have a motion to second. Ben Owens. Hi. Carolyn Lopez. Hi. Patty Coutrey. Hi. Robert Downey. I. So moved. We now move on to M6C. Discussion and possible approval adopt resolution to commit local funds for the purpose of construction K8 number one. Mr. Harmon. Good evening. President Downey, members of the board, and Dr. Lopeman. We have an action item to approve a resolution to the school facilities uh oversight board. This is related to um construction of Kate number one. Now that we have our finalized GMP, um this resolution um explains to the state the local funds that we're committing and that the uh the overall balance of our local funds and the state grant will equal the the guaranteed
maximum price to show the state that we can successfully construct this project. Any questions you may have, I'm happy to answer. Mr. Herman, I have a question. And um I I've always worked on the motto of say what you do and do what you say. We made a commitment as part of the bond and I'm not looking for the odd variance, but in general, how is what you're proposing here relate to what was in the proposal for the bond election last year? Yeah, we're very much in line to construct these the four committed projects within the the budget parameters of the bond and with appropriate I said it doesn't have to be exactly to the dollar but the generally the same amount of money is going to those projects that were um suggested or recommended
or whatever 18 months ago. Yes, sir. Okay. If there's no other questions, I make a motion that we approve this to adopt the resolution. Second. At least we have a motion to second. Ben Owens. Hi. Carolyn Lopez. Hi. Patty Catra. Hi. Robert Downey. I so moved. We now move on to item seven. Ajourn. Motion to adjurnn. Second. At least we have a motion to second. Ben Owens. Hi. Carolyn Lopez. Hi. Patty Catra. I. Robert Downey. I so move. We are now adjourned. Thank you everyone for turning up tonight. Thank you. Appreciate
