been to a football game you know that it's in desperate need um and provid a great space for fans this spring for our spring Sports and they're going to everything will be installed in time for uh graduation this may at Desert Sunrise High School good attendance is essential to success tonight we're celebrating two schools whose extra efforts have paid off and you know it was a pretty rough winter with the flu and all of the other Gunk going around so we're really excited about the two schools we get to celebrate tonight each school will receive a certificate and $250 that we hope will support the strategies that work best to promote good attendance so Mr Downey get ready to hand out some funds they're here somewhere I think well if nothing else we'll give you

and a unique perspective to our governing board congratulations to each of you [Applause] and thank you for accepting the awesome privilege and responsibility of governing board membership and with the leadership of President Downey and vice president coute and the entire governing board our community can trust that the district remains in good hands and that's my report Dr you Dr lukan move on to item three governing board members report remember rth child I have nothing to report at this time thank you welcome member Owens thank you president Downey uh glad to be back um the uh before I even uh got sworn in here um back in I think it was December 19th Dr lman and I uh toured Santa Cruz um my first time uh being in the school so that was uh uh that

was kind of fun um we toured specifically uh kindergarten um first grade and then down to third I don't remember where else we went but um there there was a lot to see big school um but it was kind of fun to see specifically how um our kids are um learning words and pronunciations and how letters fit together and then how they build on those letters to um you know with with the diagrams and the uh flea Maps I think was one of the things that if I remember right and all that stuff that was not around when I was in school um so kind of seeing how how that kind of has progressed and how that helps helps them to create a um a solid uh argument or or writing uh that we saw

as we got down into to into the fourth and fifth grade um area and just seeing that progression uh was uh was great so uh that's all I have for this evening thank you remember Lopez hi guys everybody have a good holiday we're back back to business back to learning I got to learn a couple things um first I went and I don't know that it was a tour of Santa Rosa but I toward Spalding and it was something that I really enjoyed as a parent I have struggled to help my children learn what Spalding is help them with their homework help them read I didn't learn how to read the Spalding Way um so there was a big disconnect and I feel a lot better now and the um oh it just went blank

with the name what is the name of our web the te uh Academy no what is it that we're doing my mind went blank it's the academy or the thank you parent University sorry um has been really informative with spaldi so I'm just reach out if you're a parent and you need to help with that I really enjoyed it um it was very eye openening and it makes so much sense that I'm like oh yeah okay we could do this now so that I enjoyed I also um judged a debate at Desert sunrise and that was awesome to see these kids and the viewpoints that they take on different subjects was amazing um I got all kinds of tickled with that and very proud of our students for doing that so that's it thank you

member vice president crre thank you president Downey well um welcome to all of our sworn in board members and I'm so excited that you guys um chose to be part of this and I look forward to serving with you to make an awesome board uh welcome back to all the staff and students I know you guys couldn't wait to come back to school on Monday I'm sure you were just waiting at that bus stop 15 minutes early um so uh before the break um I was able to attend um the fifth grade gifted Invention Convention that was here um in the boardroom and it was amazing uh the ideas the uh mockup models um and just asked talking to the students and asking them why did you come up with this and hearing their thought

process was just amazing we have a lot of very brilliant um and out of the box thinking students it's it's so inspiring uh I also attended the uh Santa uh Santa Cruz Elementary uh Nutcracker performance I was not able to go last year so I was able to go this year um we had uh dancing mice that were just adorable um and then um right before the break I did attend uh the Santa Cruz Elementary the fifth grade wax museum uh it's a project that they do um they were outside and everybody they did a poster board they had a speech and I went to each one of them and just again just asking them why they chose that individual and what they learned about that individual it's just so refreshing to hear it from

their point of view uh we teach it from the from the curriculum but just to hear their take on it is really an interesting thing to do so if you ever get an opportunity to to come to any of these school events try to do it it's really amazing and that's all I have thank you um I just want to take the opportunity of welcoming um member Rothchild to the board and returning members Owen and Lopez to the board um thank you for stepping up to the plate hopefully it's a good year or in your case two or four years that um you can serve on the board but welcome welcome back to the board and back for the board the only thing I I'll mention that I did do over the break was um

I did attend a half day seminar on um new board members orientation um it's surprising what you can learn even after a couple of years on the board of um the tricks and the things to do and the tricks and those I just encourage people to continually be educated and learn again and um visit those types of um seminars they are very useful and each person has a different tack a different view of how to run the board even down to um when people can speak and how they speak and that type of thing so it's it's interesting um that's all I have I'll move on to item four information item specifically 4 a classroom spot Spotlight all back SB Elementary School Dr Hassan [Applause] good evening to president Downing Dr lopan and governing board

members tonight I will be presenting our classroom Spotlight I will be highlighting the depth and complexity framework being used to help our students think more critically the information I will be sharing with you tonight aligns to goal one and goal two of our strategic plan the core relation to goal one is a focus on 100% of our students at or above grade level and our gold standard signature programs for goal two this presentation will focus on elevating student Voice by implementing strategies that will help our students be critical thinkers my topic tonight connects to a portrait of a graduate it is in alignment with all of the attributes slec Elementary is the home to the gold standard signature program called the Maricopa accelerated program the accelerated program is currently in year three of implementation there

will be an accelerated class for each grade level by the time we get to the 2728 school year while this program is only offered in one class per grade level up to second grade currently it was important for me as a leader to make sure that we find a way to bring High Lev of learning and thinking to all of our students every student can learn at high levels depth and complexity helps to increase the level of challenge for our students not only will our accelerated students be challenged cognitively but so will all of our students staff are currently being provided professional development on the depths and complexity framework we have currently had three PD sessions with an additional two trainings coming later this year The Depths and complexity framework provides teachers with tools to

empower Learners to be independent thinkers and creative problem solvers it aims to promote deeper thinking and more complex ways for students by providing them ways to explore a topic from various perspectives the most recognizable part of the depths and complexity framework are the 11 elements represented by a set of icons or pictures that are used to guide student inquiry to my left you can see the 11 icons used to explore topics the 11 icons are divided into two types depth and complexity to look at something in depth we are thinking more deeply we think about the language being used questions we have Trends ethics details Big Ideas and rules when we think of something in more complex ways we think about topics with more than one point of view how things have changed over time

and how things are connected the icons of depth and complexity are used to initiate a more advanced and extensive understanding of the subject matter for all of our Learners the icons are looked as a lens of learning that will help activate higher level thinking skills these iconic prompts for depths and complexity challenge Learners of all ages and are applicable to every subject area tonight with me I have Mrs gilam a fourth grade teacher at our school site who will be assisting me tonight you will observe students using the depth and complexity prompts to think more in depth about a non-fiction story that they have read called kids and business from our district adopted wonders curriculum with that I will go ahead and turn it over to Mrs gilam [Applause] good evening my name is Miss

Gilliam today I'm going to show you how my students use depth and complexity icons to answer essential questions our class read a story about a girl named Haley Scott Haley had been wearing herin a since she was 18 months old Haley used to be embarrassed to wear her hearing aids but decided she wanted to be proud of them she started a business making hearing age harms my students read Haley story earlier and now we'll pair up to analyze the story an essential question using the depth and complexity icons okay Super Stallions are you ready let's start with our learning Target all right learning Target all right the first icon we're going to look at is language of the discipline so language of the discipline helps students understand vocabulary there could be phrases or terms that

they're not familiar with so we always start with the language or vocabulary of our discipline we've already reviewed those in class so you'll see them here in our depth and complexity frame the next thing we're going to do is our essential question how did starting a business help Haley Scott okay students please stand up hand up pair up partner a begin so you'll notice that my um students share with their partner and then we always thank our partners for sharing B based on what the students shareed with each other I have some students that identified some details from the story I have some unanswered questions so these are things that they want to know more about and then I have some students here who have picked ethical points so this has to do with right

and wrong being just and unjust fair and unfair Hale Haley Scott started a business making charms Haley has been wearing her hearing G since she was 18 months old Haley thought that other people thought that her hearing aids were weird Okay so those students just shared the details so I would have the details icon added to my frame and they would add those notes there I have one question I wonder who buys the charms and on answer question is are kids allowed to wear them to school are they against dress code I have an unanswered question I wonder how she comes up with her designs okay so those students had unanswered questions those are things that they want to know more about so I can add that to my depth and complexity frame and they

could add those Det details there Haley wanted to be proud of your hearing how can Haley's charms help others so those are the ethical points that I was talking about I could add that to my frame and my students could list those there all right thank you so you guys can have a seat the big idea or central theme is our essential question so you can see all of the different icons that my students were able to use just from one question so now we're going to answer that question how did starting a business help Haley Scott everybody's ready to answer I'm going to call on Kora starting a business helped Haley Scott be proud of her hearing it so from there um students would then do some type of writing it could be a

paragraph it could be a partner writing but they would use the frame to then answer the question these students chose these icons but somebody could have chose multiple perspectives they could have looked at it from different perspectives we could have looked at trends um how are the sales going do they sell more right before school starts or is it around the holiday times we could look at patterns we read a number of stories about kids who started businesses so what were the different patterns that we saw in those stories so at that time I'm going to hand it back over to Dr Hassan thank you for your timeing section [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you Miss Gillum gillium and our fourth grade students for that demonstration well this was just a snippet of how it could

be used although this was U modeling the thinking that comes with using the icons students could take this topic as well and produce a thinking map such as a tree map to continue to write down their key ideas and details it's important for us to also use our non-fiction text so that we are preparing our students for high school and Beyond while we are in the beginning stages of implementation teachers and students are noticing positive results so some of the comments that we have received one example is from a second grade teacher who has said using depths and complexity has positively impacted my students since implementing it my students have been able to better identify uh patterns Big Ideas multip perspectives in a variety of subject areas it is also helping with their collaboration and

being able to do that more efficiently in the words of a Fourth Grade Student unanswered questions is my all-time favorite because you get to ask questions about the story that hasn't been talked about yet teachers will continue their professional development on depths and complex and complexities as mentioned earlier we have two more sessions for this school year teachers have been asked to use the framework in two lessons prior to our next training they were asked to prepare a lesson connecting that to a grade level standard and using the depth and complexity framework in addition to bringing in uh doing their lesson they needed to bring in those samples as well as reflect on three questions the first question was how did they connect the depths and complexity prompts to the standards that they taught for

the lesson the second question was how did the depths and complexity icons deepen their understanding of the standard and three what changes did they notice in their students ability to analyze compare and evaluate information in conclusion The Depths and complexity framework benefits students by promoting deeper knowledge retention creating problem solving and the ability to apply Concepts across different contexts depth is Simplicity is not a program but a way of teaching students how to think for themselves I look forward to elevating The Learning Experience of our students throughout the remainder of this school year using the tools that this framework offers and with that I'll take any questions Dr isan I have a couple um first off I do want to guys did great um that was really awesome to see um and I love the

questions that you ask those are great questions I'd like to know the answers to those um so you said we have the accelerated program at s at Saddleback and it goes to second grade is this framework only being used in The Accelerated classrooms or is it being used throughout all grades in all classrooms through all grades and all classes um I wanted to provide that connection so that accelerat it wasn't just in one class per grade level but how can we bring those experience es to all of our students across the building and this is a way to do that that's awesome um what is the future plans uh for um continuing that accelerated learning learning classrooms um to the different grades so you said we go to second grade right now yes right now

it's in second grade and then each year until the 27 28 school year then we add in additional grade level so next year we'll do third grade and then we continue on to fourth and fifth until it's across the building awesome thank you so much for sharing you're welcome good job [Applause] guys I'm just going to um probably reflect my age and say it's so nice to see um critical analytical thinking being applied um again show my age it's good to see group and teamwork being used and especially to show my age it's good to hear please and thank you been taught to the kids so thank you very much really good well done kids really good job thank [Applause] you did oh sorry um more of a um comment than a question so as

someone who's in the workforce seen your students in the manner in which they were interacting on such a professional um level um literally just brought joy to my heart having actual conversations and engaging with each other complimenting each other for the questions and being able to say hey I had that same question found it very interesting and just a reminder that uh education never stops so congratulations to you Mrs gum and the [Applause] students I apologize member stick your thumb up or weave at me or something to say hey I got something to say I always try to speak last okay we might move on to 4B addressing growth and classroom needs for fiscal year 2025 to 2026 Mr Harmon all right thank you good evening president Downey members of the governing board and Dr

lman the purpose of this presentation is is to consider plans to address growth and classroom needs for the 2526 fiscal year Strate strategic planning for growth and additional space aligns with all four goals of the marope Unified School District strategic plan when we review our projected growth from our latest demographic study we're expecting over 4% enrollment growth at just under 400 additional students overall we're positioned very well to handle the incoming enrollment with our current classroom inventory with a couple of exceptions this presentation will focus on the two elementary schools that may require additional space for next year uh first is Santa Cruz Elementary requires five new positions for growing enrollment in the 2526 school year we have worked with principal Reinhardt to evaluate and review her current classroom inventory and have identified three classrooms

not assigned to home rooms that can be available for new positions next year that leaves us with a need for two additional classrooms at Santa Cruz we're currently reviewing all options including program placement classroom modifications and additional portable classrooms um the second is Santa Rosa Elementary um requires two new positions for growing enrollment again we've worked with principal Sanic to evaluate and review her current classroom inventory and have determined that all classrooms are assigned to home rooms and we have a need for two additional classrooms at Santa Rosa next year we're currently reviewing all options again including uh program placements campus modifications and additional portable classrooms um sorry the addition of portable classrooms we're confident in our ability to address these needs uh for classrooms for the 26 25 26 school year as a reminder

next year is our last year before we open the sarento school and opening that school will provide some wiggle room as we wait for State funding for our next school short and sweet I'll be happy to entertain any questions you may have Mr Harmon does Santa Rosa already have a a portable building Santa Rosa does not so that would be new that's correct um and then we utilize two at Santa Cruz we currently have two buildings or four classrooms at Santa Cruz yes by putting in said will that affect our funding for the next school that we build like as far as the amount of kids will we still show that growth for that next amount of funding to come in in like two two years right two more years uh yes okay yeah two

or three years um it will not affect our funding okay um the state's formula includes what they call a leeway of locally funded space so they do allow a certain number of square footage that we can construct before it impacts our formula that qualifies us for additional space or way below that formula so none of these uh proposed potential increases in portable classrooms will will impact that uh that qualifying of additional space for State funding and then what the what's the feedback been from the two sites and and the principles and the staff what's the feedback been when we talk about bringing in two portables next you know Port the the Portables that we um purchase and install are they brand new facilities and they're equipped to the same degree as um as our regular

classrooms are with technology air conditioning Etc um they're they meet all the the minimum requirements uh and then some they have windows they're they're nice facilities um we um allow you know we we place we give principles that ownership of the programs that go in there the kind of the the traffic management that kind of stuff uh our facilities and uh team and our contractor that we work with with Mr Harmon um we partner very closely with the school principal so that they're in on the ground floor contributing to the location the proximity to bathrooms all you know they are the they are the ones who best know about all of those logistical features um we they do consume space you know that that's the other side of the coin is they consume space that

is we we you know it it's just space that could have been previously playground or basketball courts um there's also the imposition of construction we living in Maricopa nobody knows that better than us you know that's an imposition as well um so it's it is a it is an example of a growing pain we have great staff great leadership who uh work with it and and um you know it it turns out to be a good situation because we can prioritize class size this way um this is is really what drives this conversation is our commitment to our Elementary class sizes what is our Target date to have a plan in place so that we're we're starting the school year with all of this uh for for the portable conversation that timeline is is tight

um I've already had lots of meetings getting uh getting numbers to be ready for a board approval when and if we've satisfied all the options that we're identifying one of the options is portable so I need to be prepared for that if that is the decision that we that we make so I've already engaged with Core Construction who did the the previous Portables and an architect um a portable vendor so we're already um that Ball's already rolling so so uh they're confident that if that's the direction we need to go we'll we'll be able to hit our deadlines the start of the school year we're also in the process of looking at campus modifications or um you know other programs to see if there's other options so but we're we're working on that every day

thank you Mr Haron first of all thank you Mr Harman for presenting um that presentation question regarding safety so with that can you explain a little bit about the location of the Portables and how students can remain safe even though it's a separate section um on on the grounds yeah that's a great question our Portables are placed within the envelope of the uh the perimeter fencing so so they it is uh is within the fence envelope and all the Portables are outfitted with a um a secure um with with secure doors and a electronic access um so the the kids can can come and go if a kid needs to use a restroom the the Portables are located right near a restroom Hub of the of the main building so you know many times they're

closer of a walk than kids that might be further on in the internal hallways but they can take their bathroom pass Buzz themselves in and out and get into their buildings but that building is then locked for any anyone that was not authorized to enter the the Portables that that answer your question yes so just to restate for myself so in short no one can enter the Portables without first going through the secure front office that's correct okay thank you Mr Harmon is um I've been in uh when when I did my tour at Santa Cruz um I was in the gifted uh portable there very very nice I I was I was surprised uh at how how bright it is in there um how nice it was um and that was something that was

started uh as I was exiting the board previously so seeing that kind of come full was was kind of kind of nice but um is um if we put Portables in um is there uh enough uh I'm trying to trying to phrase this correctly um we've done done it before obviously um Can can we get it done in in the city partner with us and getting uh getting those done on time so that's not going to be a a hindrance have you started engaging some of those conversations as well we're we're doing projects on a regular basis to require City permanating and approval we work closely with those teams starting this early um will give us uh plenty of lead time to work through the city were permitted Portables also require permitting through the state

Housing Authority so we have kind of two levels of of Permitting approvals and that's that's really the critical timeline outside of constructing a new building um that that the team is well aware of so starting early just make sure that you know one week delay could mean you know a make or break on on a early July um deadline so we're we're looking closely at permitting and we're we have great Partners at the city and great relationships to to mitigate that gotcha um and then the other question is so we uh if we put Portables in let's say at um uh Santa Cruz which is very close to the sarento uh site um does that become kind of a a a one-year Band-Aid so to speak to to kind of that you know in two

years now hey we've got open classrooms that now what are we do with do you follow me I do um we wouldn't propose to build a portable that was a a temporary one-year solution and we would if that was the case we may consider a lease a portable for for a year because it you know it would be much cheaper to to lease for for a year than to buy forever so that is a factor that we're looking at at both of those sites also because of our our long-term projections of growth even if it's temporary for now you know two or three years from now we're going to be in another cycle where we're waiting for approval for from the state so we're kind of always going to be two or three years away

from a similar situation um that being said we don't want to build Portables if we don't have to and so we're we're looking at at all of our options gotcha my questions were asked an answer so thank you Mr Harmon thank you now move on to item five call call to the public uh least I don't have any cards so we'll skip item five I move on to item six consent agenda motion to approve second Lisa we have a motion to Second Shante Rothchild I Ben Owens I Karen Lopez I Patty kraay I Robert Downey I so moved we now move on to item seven action item specifically 7A discussion and possible approval of the Personnel schedule Mr Becket thank you president Downey members of the governing board Dr lman have the Personnel schedule in

experience of the M musd District at large and specifically with the musd governing board we have several very large projects initiatives that started last year 2024 and those those need to move forward quickly in 2025 I feel that continuity and consistency would be appropriate at this time for this year to that end I'm willing to serve as president for another year but just for one more year um and that's me um and I open it up to comments questions or a motion a second uh I would motion uh to nominate uh president Downey for another year another year I second that motion half to since I volunteer to do it um Le to have a motion in a second Shante [Music] Rothchild I Ben Owens I Carolyn Lopez no Patty crae Robert Downey I it's
