Um, for those who I haven't met yet, my name is Eric Twiddell and I have the honor and privilege and blessing of serving as a superintendent here at Stevenson High School. And I am so fortunate to be the first one to welcome you tonight to the graduation ceremony for the Adai Stevenson High School graduating class
of 2026. Let's give them a round of applause. [applause] So, would our graduates continue to stand and would everybody else stand and join us for the national anthem, please? Heat up >> [music] [music] >> here. [music] >> [music] >> Heat. [music] Heat. [music] Heat. [music] Heat. [music] >> [music] [cheering] [applause] >> and welcome graduates, family and friends. My name is Amy No, and it is Oh, you guys can see. Sorry. [laughter] My name is Amy No and it is my privilege to serve as president of the district 125 board of education. Everyone up here shares your joy as we celebrate the class of 2026. All of us have watched our own graduates walk across the stage or soon will. To say we are proud of you feels like a tremendous understatement, but it is still
very true. I think we can all agree how talented, smart, kind, curious, and ambitious Stevenson students are. Class of 2026 is no exception. As board members, our best moments are spent interacting with students where we see firsthand how incredible you are. Whether it's hearing from our student council board representative, shout out to Logan, listening to students concerns, handing out awards, or fielding questions from statesman reporters, I always leave those interactions feeling better about the future. Right now, as the world feels overwhelming and a bit out of control, the thing that gives me hope is walking through the building and feeling the positive energy of the campus. You embody our portrait of a graduate by demonstrating your commitment to self, commitment to others, and commitment to learning every day. Now more than ever, the world needs
your grit, resilience, empathy, and leadership. Take those skills and carry them with you as you embark on your next steps. They will serve you well and someday we will look to you to lead. I can say with certainty you will do so with great success and we should feel confident in the future. Just let us know when you're ready so we can get out of the way. Congratulations class of 2026. [applause] Good evening, class of 2026. And we also good evening to the family and friends who have come here to celebrate tonight with these absolutely incredible students. Uh my name is Troy Gobble and it is my honor to be the principal here at Stevenson High School and I get to uh introduce some of the most important people here today, our student speakers. Our
student speaker addresses are named for the two great passions of Adli Stevenson's life, writing and politics. And so our first student speech today will be the scriptor address which looks back at our four years together. Our speaker is Nissa Ralph who will be attending Indiana University. Let's hear for Nissa. [cheering] [applause] Good evening to all families and friends, teachers and peers, and of course, the graduating class of 2026. Yeah, let's give a round of applause. Come on. [applause] Standing here today, it's hard to believe how fast the past few years have flown by. From our very first days of school to this incredible milestone we now share. My first graduation was from preschool to kindergarten. During the ceremony, every kid was asked the same question, and I'm pretty sure you can guess it. What do
you want to be when you grow up? I was 5 years old, standing on stage in pigtails and bows, but I already knew what I was going to say. I leaned into the microphone and I said, "I want to be a bus driver when I grow up." I know that sounds completely random, maybe even made up, but my mom has video proof. I promise. And at 5 years old, it was my proudest answer. All because of my first friend. I think we all know that feeling when you're too scared to sit down at a table with people you don't know. That feeling when you're nervous and you're new to a school. I remember it was hard to make friends when I was little. But despite all that, I happily skipped the big yellow school bus
so I could talk to the person sitting behind those doors. My bus driver was the first person that made me feel included every single day. As we grew up, our lives became filled with the bigger moments. The exams, the grades, the sports games, the performances. Through it all, there were the people in the background shaping our lives when we didn't even realize it. The custodians who stayed after long days so we could return to a welcoming space. The cafeteria workers who made our days better with great food. the traffic directors that stood outside on the coldest days so we could reach school safely. I know for a fact there are people sitting here right now that would get excited to tell the security guards the crazy moments of their week. Me included. At Stevenson, I
was heavily involved in the theater program. In September, I remember there was a rehearsal that was so mentally draining I was aching to go home. I walked down the stairs to the sports center to head out to my car and I saw none other than Steven the security guard, the king himself, waving at me. [laughter] I stayed to chat with him and in just 5 minutes, my spirits were lifted. I even invited him to come see the show and he didn't hesitate to say yes. People like Steven are the heart and soul of what it means to be a patriot. And maybe that's one of the most important things we've learned without even recognizing it. That the value of a high school like Stevenson is higher because of the individuals who show up without always
being noticed. Looking back, I don't think that preschool answer was really about becoming a bus driver. I think it was about recognizing the people that matter every day and make up our community. Community to me, it means the beauty of two things. Empathy and human connection. It's what we do when no one is watching. At a soccer game, it's that moment you look out into the stands and you see your loved ones hyping you up in the crowd. It's about a genuine thank you. The habit of noticing. It could even just be addressing someone by their name. My friend Joyce is one of the West Jasmine's baristas, and she always lights up with a smile when I shout out her name. Community is what Stephvenson is best at and what I encourage all of you
to take away from your experience here. As we leave for places that are unfamiliar, I know we will all benefit from the perspective we didn't even know we gained, to notice people, to appreciate them, to continue being good community members ourselves. Because while things like the burrito bowl prices kept changing and putting me in debt, there was a constant in our school, the selfless individuals that contribute to our community. So, thank you all for being a part of my community and thank you for listening. [cheering] [applause] Now, we're going to invite our senior choir members to please come forward and perform our alma mater. While they're getting set, I would like to remind everyone that as of right now, this is our 60th anniversary as a school and we have had approximately 40,000 students graduate
from Stevenson High School. All of those alumni exist all across the nation and some of them are here tonight. So, as we prepare to sing our alma mater, is it possible to have all the alumni in the crowd, all of you that have come, but please stand up. If you are a former Patriot, stand up. Let's get a big round of applause to our alumni. [applause] Stay standing for the alma mater. Class of 2026, will you please stand up for the alma mater? Class of 2026, please stand. And now Rand Hatcher will lead the choir in singing our alma mater. and strong to be with your heart. We raise [singing and music] our swelling [singing] to heaven. [singing] Oh h [music] our [singing] [music] praise for your heart we praise. Praise [singing] our song [music]
[singing] to our voice is [music and singing] full. Oh, [music] [singing] our dream and [singing] [music] >> [applause] >> Thank you very much, choir. That was outstanding. Please have a seat, class of 2026. And thank you very much, alumni, for participating. We're always proud to have you back. And for the class of 2026, anytime you want to come back and participate, we'd love to have you. Next up, we're going to hear our gubernator address which will look towards our future. Today's speaker, Sanji Despande, will be attending Cornell University in the fall. Let's give it up for Sanji. [cheering] [applause] Thank you, Mr. Gobble, for that kind introduction. Good evening, everyone. How's it going class of 2026? [cheering] [applause] Once again, my name is Sanji Desh Pande and I'm beyond honored to be speaking to all
of you today. Before I begin, I'd like to extend some thank yous. Thank you to all our faculty, friends, and family who have helped shape us and to become who we are today. And also, I'd like to especially thank my mom and dad who have always been there for me. On the topic of parents, that's where I'd like to start my speech. So, every time my dad and I sit down to watch a movie, we're getting ready for battle. Who can predict the next plot twist first? Unfortunately, I usually lose. And every single time without fail, my dad goes, "I told you so." And nonchalantly walks away. But he walks away because he's already guessed the next scene. And in that, he misses the entire story. So over time, I found a thrill in losing
to my dad, waiting to see what actually happens instead of predicting it right away. For the last few years, fellow graduates, we've all been trying to predict what comes next. What will we get on that lame rhetorical analysis that we just took? Is Mr. Aira about to crack another 67 joke? We've truly been through it all. Recall how your plans changed since you first entered through that point your freshman year of high school. That unexpected friend group breakup that led you to explore new friends and that random extracurricular that you got invited to where you found some of your most success. Some of our most unexpected moments have turned into our most unforgettable memories. So now as we navigate this new stage of life, you can guest the next scene, but you won't be able
to predict your whole story. Even my dad can't predict that for you. Let's take that feeling of uncertainty to embrace the opportunities that we never expected to seize. Go to that party where you know absolutely nobody. Take that class with the professor who has a 2.2 on ratemyprofessor.com and cold email that person you've been stalking on LinkedIn for ages. Regardless of whether it's a terrible or terrific experience, you'll end up learning something new, something valuable. I'm not telling you to not have a plan. I'm telling you to also have a bucket list. No predicting game, just possibilities for your future. The greatest joys in our life aren't planned. They're the surprises we take on the detours along the way. So, if you want your life to be filled with the action, drama, comedy, and romance
of a movie, then stop chasing what's next and start living in what's here. And when a villain enters or a plot twist appears out of nowhere, face it head on. There will be days when you feel as if the world is crashing down on you. When doubt creeps in and whispers in your ear that you are not enough. But don't forget, the plot doesn't move without you in it. So don't just walk away because you predict something bad will happen next. Stay. Stay for the risks you never saw coming. Stay for the version of yourself that you've never met before. Graduates of the many, many things that we have learned at Stevenson, take this with you. We patriots do not skip to the ending. We live the journey because if we knew the ending, then
it wouldn't be worth a watch. Class of 2026, you have no idea what happens next, but make it worth watching. And for once, sorry, Dad, nobody gets to say, "I told you so." Thank you. [applause] How about one more round of applause for both of our student speakers? They're amazing. [applause] I want to echo Miss No's welcome and extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of our students and families as we celebrate the class of 2026. I have the distinct honor and privilege of presenting the class to our board of education who is with us this evening. Before I do, however, I think it's important to recognize that since that little kurfuffle 6 years ago, what you've accomplished over the past four years is nothing short of extraordinary. What you've done as a class these past
four years sets a high bar for all future Patriots to follow. This year alone, you led Stevenson to one of the most successful seasons in all of our uh successful seasons in all of our co-curricular and athletic programs. Just for a minute, consider the list of state champions. And as I read off these teams, would the students please stand uh and be recognized? We had state championships with our wit and soul publications. So, would those students please stand? Congratulations to these teams. [applause] Our chess team, we're state champions. So, our chess team, please stand. [applause] Table tennis, we're state champions as well. The debate team won state championships. The history bowl won state championships. The Latin Club, HOSA, FBLA students, please stand and be recognized. Our architecture and engineering teams won state championships. FCCLA won
a state championship. The science Olympiad team won a state championship. The math team won a state championship. Statesmen, the science reach team, BPA. And in our athletic programs, the girls swim team and the girls bad mitten teams won state championships. [applause] Unbelievable. Congratulations to all of them. And those are just the state championships. To have a full list of all of our uh amazing students and all of their accomplishments would take us well into the evening. But it wasn't just trophies and titles. You also set new academic benchmarks across the board. You achieved some of our highest ACT and SAT scores in our school's history. Collectively, you earned college credit through our AP program, more so than any graduating class in our school's history. And perhaps more inspiring in all, you've w you've raised well
over $100,000 for local, state, national, and global charities. You didn't just grow, you also gave, and you gave generously. So, thank you. [applause] Over these four years, you've embodied our portrait of a graduate, as Miss No remarked, but not just in skill, in spirit, and we're beyond proud. Before we celebrate you each individually tonight, however, it's important to recognize that no one is is on this journey alone. First and foremost, you've had the love, wisdom, and unwavering support of your first and most important teachers. So, with the parents, grandparents, guardian, families of our graduates, please stand in the audience. Please stand if you're able. And students, let's thank all of your parents, grandparents, guardians for everything that they've done for you these last four years. >> [applause] >> Thank you parents, grandparents, guardians. And of
course, no Stephvenson education would be complete without the passion and expertise of our amazing faculty and staff, some of whom are with us this evening. This is a group of folks who've taught you everything from how to write a DBQ to running a mile in PE to screwing a wing nut in engineering class to how to make a claim and support it to ev with evidence. Would all the members of our faculty and staff please stand? Let us students recognize you as well for all your hard work. [applause] >> [cheering] >> To our guests tonight, we ask that you help us honor every graduate by holding your loudest celebrations until the very end of the ceremony so each student's name can be clearly heard and properly acknowledged. It's a small courtesy that will mean a
great deal to all of our families. And finally, to members of our board of education, by the authority vested in me, I hereby certify that each student that we are presenting tonight has fulfilled the graduation requirements of Adlife Stevenson High School, District 125, and the Illinois State Board of Education, and are entitled to receive the diploma we're granting this evening. It is my privilege, my joy to present to you the Adai Stevenson graduating class of 2026. Congratulations students. [applause] Thank you very much, Dr. Twiddell. Um, we really appreciate that. He and I have been lucky enough to be together for 15 years. He's an amazing partner and mentor and um thrilled to be with him today. So, uh I think in days like this, it is important for us to recognize Adai Edie Stevenson who's
part of our namesake. Um he he spoke a lot and wrote a lot and I think one of the most powerful things that he ever spoke about was when speaking to a graduating class at Princeton University. Uh this is the quote from that speech. Don't be afraid to learn, to read, to study, to work, to try to know because at the very best you can know very little. And don't above all things be afraid to think for yourself. Nothing has been in my judgment more disheartening about the contemporary scene the last several years in America than the growth of the unpopular of the popularity of unreason. To my way of thinking, it is not the years in your life, but the life in your years that count in the long run. You'll have more fun.
You'll do more. And you'll get more. You'll get more satisfaction the more you know and the more you have worked and the more you have lived for yours is a great adventure at a stirring time in the annals of men. That was from 1954 an address to Princeton University and I think it speaks to uh the work that we do very much today. There are a couple uh two other groups of students that I want to recognize before we start reading names. First of all, uh you just heard a long list of accolades. There are actually 14 of your fellow classmates who could not be here today because they were competing in state competition. The members of our water polo team, our lacrosse team, and our tennis team. Big round of applause. [applause] We will
have a special graduation ceremony for them next week which is always a lot of fun. And the last group that I want to particularly recognize, it's a group of our students who have chosen to serve our country uh for the next four years of time in many different ways. the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Air Force, the National Guard, and a student who will be attending the Naval Academy. If your plans for the future are to go to the military, can you please stand up for us? Let's recognize [cheering] Let's recognize these kids. We're so proud of them. [applause] Thank you very much.
