[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Well, good evening and welcome to the AdLai Stevenson High School graduation for the class of 2025. Congratulations students. I'm going to ask you to stand back up. Uh, and with friends and family, if you could please rise and join us for the national anthem. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Yeah. Graduates, please be seated. Welcome. My name is Amy No, and it is my honor and privilege to be the president of the District 125 Board of Education. It is also my honor and privilege to be the parent of two Stevenson High School graduates. I welcome all the parents, siblings, grandparents, friends, and other special guests. Thank you for joining us on this special day in 2024. My message to graduates was
Stephvenson students are amazing. Class of 2025 is no less amazing, but you're unique and deserve your own word. So, I did what many of you may have done in the last four years when you needed an answer. I asked chat GPT. Many options came up, but the top suggestion was astounding, which according to Chat GPT means something that is so surprising and impressive that it leaves you in awe. What a perfect description for all of you as leaders, athletes, artists, and scholars. More than 1,000 of you participated in clubs, activities, and events. More than 600 of you participated in a varsity club or intramural sport. More than 1,000 of you participated in fine arts classes or performances. And more than 1100 of you participated in a college level experience. Astounding. As board members, graduation is
our favorite event. We know firsthand how incredibly proud your family and friends are of each and every one of you. Tonight, two of our board members, Don Tyer and Grace Sao, will have the tremendous honor of handing their own children their diplomas right here on stage. It's a special day for all of us. Tonight, we celebrate the Stevenson portrait of a graduate come to life and we celebrate our astounding students and all your accomplishments. As you graduate and leave Stevenson to begin your next journey, I ask you to please remember the foundations you learned here. commitment to self, commitment to others, and commitment to learning. Wherever you go and whatever you do next, please remember as a community, we will always be here holding you up and cheering you on so you never forget. You
are astounding. Thank you and congratulations. [Music] Good evening families and good evening graduates. My name is Troy Gobble and it is my high honor to be the principal here at Stevenson High School and we are so excited to have the opportunity to celebrate tonight with all of you. At this point, it is my pleasure to introduce the first of our student speakers who will be giving the scriptor address which looks back at our four years together. Please, a great round of applause for our speaker, Ryan Dong. Thank you so much for that kind introduction, Mr. Gobble. Fellow graduates, esteemed teachers, parents who honestly deserve diplomas themselves for their patience. Good evening. My name is Ryan Dong, and I'm so beyond honored to be here with you all tonight. We, the class of 2025, have spent
over a decade writing our epic novel, a literary masterpiece that first began in kindergarten in 2012, the year of stubby crayons, Velcro sneakers, and backpacks bigger than our backs. For years, we've written the story together, and now we meet here today, ready to close that book and each start our own. But before we sign off, let's take a nostalgic flip through the highlights of our educational journey. After kindergarten came first and second grade, where we would assert our dominance at recess gaga ball. Then came third and fourth grade where we all became masters of that future Olympic sport, water bottle flipping. Then finally fifth grade, where we had believed that we had experienced the pinnacle of education, our first graduation. We walked across that stage in paper caps, certain that we had conquered the academic
world. And then all of a sudden, we were in middle school with a plot twist that no one saw coming. At one moment, we were figuring out locker combinations. And the next, we were attending school from our bedrooms. Seventh and eighth grade weren't just awkward, they were historically awkward. We endured virtual PE, which let's be honest, we were not doing jumping jacks behind those cameras. We turned our bedrooms into makeshift classrooms. And we became masters of the phrase, "Oh, sorry, my Wi-Fi is lagging," and maybe even the occasional, "Am I muted?" We experimented with questionable quarantine haircuts, tried to sync together our orchestra instruments over Zoom, and despite all odds, learned math through a screen. But if those years taught us anything, it was adaptability. We learned that school was less about where we were
and more about the people that we experienced it with, whether it was in person or in glitchy Zoom breakout rooms. And when we couldn't be together, we still found ways to connect. Whether it was FaceTime marathons between classes, oh, sorry, during classes, Google Docs that turned into group chats, or even sussing out the imposttor in Among Us together. Though we were editing our shared history online, we never stopped turning the page. We came back stronger, if not slightly feral, and ready to face high school, the final chapter of this book. Four years that felt like both a lifetime and a lunch break. At first, we were overwhelmed by the endless hallways and the maze of parking lots. And what do you mean? There are two whole buildings that you have to travel between. We lost
track of where our classes were, lost hours to procrastination, and lost collective dignity to those group projects where one person did all the work. And if you don't know who that was, then it probably wasn't you. Even then, we persevered together. We bonded over midnight cramming facetimes, slamming through chapters that we definitely should have read a week earlier. We shivered together in the ice box that was the fieldhouse on SAT day. We yelled ourselves horse at the bleachers of the homecoming game. We traded snacks and stories on bus routes that always seemed to change. We met characters who added spice to our lives. The peer tutor who showed up like a superhero to help you with your English essay. That one classmate who turned a group presentation into a stand-up routine. And of course, our
favorite substitute teacher. See if you guys can guess. Hello everyone. My name is Rob Miller. I'm a laidback sub. You guys are good. And now here we are at the final sentence of this final chapter. Bookmarks in hand. As you walk across this stage, remember that we're not just closing a book. We're starting the sequel. Some of us may go on to college, others to the military, others to the workforce. all of us to realize that we really took the PWC for granted. But no matter where life takes us, we carry these moments, each other, and the wisdom we've gathered along the way. So, congratulations, Stevenson class of 2025. As we sign off from this chapter, let's remember every ending is a new beginning because the future is yours to write. Thank you everyone. Thank
you very much, Ryan. And now we'd like to call our senior choir members to come forward to perform our Stevenson alma mater. Uh while they're coming forward, I would like to uh like to remind all the graduates, you are about to become part of a group of alumni that are over 40,000 strong and are across the nation and the world doing amazing things. We probably have very many alumni in the arena today. If you are a Stevenson alumni and you are in the crowd, could you please stand up so we can recognize you and welcome you back? Yeah. Fellow patriots, class of 2025, can you please stand for the alma mater? Uh alumni stay standing. Graduates, please stand for the alma mater. Our choir is led by Rand Hatcher and Kirsten Snelton. Hello and strong
to thee with loyal hearts we Praise our soul to heaven. Our voice is [Music] bold to the se are green and gold and strong. To thee with loyal hearts we raise our swelling to [Music] heaven to the [Music] Green and [Applause] gold. You may be seated. Thank you, choir. That was absolutely beautiful. So much appreciated. And next up, uh, our second student speaker tonight will give the gubernator address, which looks forward to your future and imagines what your what your lives and experiences will be. We couldn't have a better way to celebrate that than with today's speaker, Maya Heler. Last semester, while drowning in applications and school stress, I visited my grandparents house where we ordered Chinese takeout. The next morning, I told my grandfather I was nervous about leaving home and the general uncertainty
of the year. He grabbed a leftover fortune cookie, handed it to me, and said, "Open it. Whatever it says is what you need to hear right now. I laughed but did it anyway. Ever since that day, I keep this fortune everywhere I go, tucked inside my phone case. It reads, "Trust in the process. Your future is unfolding perfectly." The future is both a terrifying and exhilarating phrase for us. It feels like something we have been waiting for. From the first time we logged into Navviance to Senior Sunrise. As we make plans for the future, it's natural to have doubts. Did we commit to the right school? What will that first job be like? And how much money will we donate to the Stevenson Foundation each year? The thing is, most of us don't know what
we want yet. This is where that fortune cookie and its advice to trust in the process comes into play. But the fortune is incomplete. Trusting in the process does not mean that we can put our feet up and hope for the best. Stephvenson has taught us that trusting in the process requires grit and resilience to work towards challenging goals. Trusting in the process means taking action and taking after our school's namesake, Adeli E. Stevenson. We are hardworking in the face of adversity. Because of our intense drive, now is the time we can be proud of our accomplishments, trust in the process, and look forward to our futures. The second part of the fortune tells us that our future is unfolding perfectly. At college, in our careers, in life, some things are bound to go differently
than we hope. We may end up transferring schools, training for a different career, or realizing we really regret not giving more money to the Stevenson Foundation. Right now, it may be hard to believe that these setbacks are all part of a successful future. However, the grit and resilience we have cultivated at Stevenson will be what pushes us through these obstacles. Not towards a perfect future, but one in which we constantly become better versions of ourselves. I'm already nostalgic for sports games, club meetings, and school traditions. But I know some of us are also excited for dorm life and new friends. Some of us for choosing classes, and some of us for that satisfying moment when we get that first paycheck. We don't know what comes next, but I look forward to our 10-year reunion when
we will look at each other and know that everything is working out. Until then, trust in the process. Our futures are unfolding perfectly. Thank you. How about one final round of applause for Ryan and Maya? They are amazing. Thank [Music] you. Our students are always a tough act to follow. Good evening. For those who I haven't had a chance to meet yet, my name is Eric Twedell and I have the honor of serving as the superintendent here at Stevenson. And I would like to echo Mrs. No's welcome and extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of our students and families. And let me begin with the simple truth and Ryan alluded to this that no class in the history of Stevenson has gotten off to a more inospicious start. Uh you've had a dynamic, fast-moving, successful
high school experience. From your very first year, you hit the ground running with a return to full in-person learning, a rapid reawakening of our campus life, and a whirlwind of academic, athletic, and artistic opportunities compared to the two years prior. You didn't just you didn't adjust to high school, as one of our students said to me out in the hallway, "We owned it." And another student said, "No, no, no. We crushed it." And another student said, "It was funsies." and and I'm not sure what that meant, but it was all good. Uh what you accomplished over these four years is nothing short of extraordinary, and your legacy will set a high bar for future patriots to follow. There's been a host of achievements achievements, but I would like to recognize just a few. Do we
have any members of our cheer team uh here in the audience tonight? Our cheer team placed fourth at the state meet. So, congratulations to our cheer team. Our chess team was second in state. So shout out to our chess team. Girls bad mitten continues their dominance. They were second in state this year. So shout out to girls bad mitten. Our girls swim and dive team was fourth in state. Our girls tennis was second in state. Our hosa team had 19 individual state champions. Patriots were second in state. And the Scholastic Bull and ACES team were also second. And finally, our FCCLA team were state champions. So, round of applause to all those groups. Those, however, are just a few of the highlights. Uh the list would take us well past sunset. But it wasn't all
just trophies and titles. Academically, you set new benchmarks across the board. This class in particular achieved some of our highest ACT and SAT scores and collectively earned more college credit through our AP program than any graduating class before you. Yeah, it's impressive. And I find this particularly inspiring. As a class, you led fundraising efforts that raised well over $100,000 for local, national, and global causes. You didn't just grow, you gave. and you gave generously. So, thank you. As Mrs. No said, over these four years, you've embodied what we call the portrait of a graduate, not just in skill, but in spirit. But before we celebrate each of you individually, as we'll do here in a minute, I think it's important that we take a moment to recognize that you've not been on this journey alone.
First and foremost, you've had the love, wisdom, and unwavering support of your most important teachers, your parents, grandparents, guardians, relatives, friends, and family. And many of them are here in the audience tonight. So, would our friends and family members who are in the audience of our graduates please stand? And students, can you find them, point to them, give them a round of applause, and thank them for everything that they've done for you. Thank you. Thank you, parents. [Applause] students. In addition to amazing family and friends, no Stephvenson education would be complete without the passion and expertise of the incredible faculty and staff here at Stevenson High School. Some of us uh who are here this evening. So would the Stevenson faculty and staff and administrative team members please stand? Students, would you join me in
giving them a round of applause as well? This is an amazing group of educators. Thank you to our guests tonight. We ask that you help us honor each of our graduates equally. We're going to ask respectfully that you hold your loudest celebrations until the end of the ceremony so that each student's name can be clearly heard and properly acknowledged. It's a small courtesy that, as you will see in a minute, makes a great deal. And finally, to the members of the board of education who are here tonight. By the authority vested in me, I hereby certify that each of the students presented tonight has fulfilled all of the graduation requirements of Adli Stevenson High School and the state of Illinois Board of Education and is entitled to the diplomas they are about to receive. It
is my privilege to present to you the Adlife Stevenson class of 2025. Congratulations students. [Music] Before we get started today, I think it's important to recognize the namesake of our great institution, Adli Stevenson, uh, III. Uh he was um a governor of Illinois, ambassador to the United Nations, and two-time failed presidential candidate. He actually lost spectacularly only winning one state and it was not his home state of Illinois. Um which I think is a great message for all of you. You can still go on to do great things even if there is a failure in your life. Um, Adli Stevenson was asked to speak to the graduating class at Princeton University and he shared this important bit of wisdom and I think it's important for us to consider that today. Don't be afraid to learn,
to read, to study, to work, to try to know because at the very best you can know very little. And don't above all things be afraid to think for yourself. Nothing has been, in my judgment, more disheartening about the contemporary scene the last several years in America than the growth of the popularity of unreason. To my way of thinking, it is not the years in your life, but the life in your years that count in the long run. You'll have more fun, you'll do more, and you'll get more. You'll give more satisfaction the more you know, the more you have worked, and the more you have lived. For yours is a great adventure at a stirring time in the annals of men. With that, we've got the board ready to begin to present um our
diplomas, and we're going to turn it over to the council. 041bits of business to take care of. The first thing that I need to do, hopefully your tassels are currently on the right side of your hat. Tradition says when you move it from the left, from the right to the left, that is the moment that you become an alumni of Stevenson High School. Let's move those tassels to the left. Congratulations. And the last thing that we need to do, we'd like to conclude today's celebration with a chance for that great everybody throws their hat up moment. So, if you want to keep your tassel, here's your chance to grab it. Families in the crowd, get your cameras ready. I'm going to countd down from three. I'm going to count down two, three. One, two, three. In a minute. Hold on. Ready? One, two, three. Congratulations, class
