007um our meeting now and the next item on the agenda uh next item is visitor statements do we have any visitor statements okay um so the normal rules for our visitor statements is if you um would uh please give your comments and please limit your comments to three minutes your name and uh where you live please i think yeah yeah i think he's gonna go first and then that's okay sorry about that go ahead okay all right hi everyone so hi i'm chris salaturo i teach sociology here at stevenson i live in arlington heights um i sent you all my letter of resignation about a month ago and uh that letter is scheduled to be approved later tonight so i came here tonight to kind of provide some closure for my time here at shs
008and leave you all with some direction for the future first i want to say thank you to the board for the tremendous opportunity that i've had working here it has been a tremendous opportunity and one that i could only have dreamed of so many years ago and working here district 125 has allowed me to grow as a teacher and rise to the top of my profession and especially my subject area i'm so grateful and proud of what i've been able to accomplish for more than 15 years i was selected for senior awards night as a teacher who made a difference in students lives i've earned three ambassador awards from the board my student voice survey data has been higher than stevenson's average uh consistently i've appreciated the ways that the district has helped me thrive
009in my discipline i became the um assistant high school uh representative for the american sociological association one of only two teachers in the country to be on that advisory board i was a co-author on the national standards i co-authored the c3 common core standards for sociology and i was a pioneer of the loyola dual credit program i even got my justice of the peace license and married two of my students who had met in my class 10 years later they ended up getting married and they asked me to be the officiant so needless to say it's been an amazing time and i really appreciate all that however the last several years have been incredibly stressful and so much so that i've decided to resign and the reason that it's been so stressful is this proficiency
010grace baiting system known as ebr that stevenson has implemented and i think it's incredibly dysfunctional and i wanted to speak to you all tonight quickly and let you all know that dozens of my colleagues and students all feel the same as my letter indicates to you and i know i submitted a letter this morning and i i pared it down so that i would just be hopefully under three minutes i'll be quick i'm not going to read the whole letter but so you have details but as my letter indicates i've tried over the years to address this dysfunction right and there's just a few things i would like to highlight so first this evidence-based grading is confusing and contradictory because students don't know what the expectations are so for example some teachers grade on trend
011and other teachers grade on the overall mode and those who use trend define trend differently a trend could be one for most recent a trend could be the one most recent grade or it could be two or three most recent grades it varies some teachers grade skills like reading and writing other teachers use categories like homework and and tests some teachers are told that they can grade homework and other teachers are told that they can't grade homework that it shouldn't be part of the student's grade some teachers allow students to make up work at any time during the semester while other teachers set dates limiting when work can be made up and they use that to affect the student's grade some teachers have a grading system that moves with the most recent grades so like
012you have so many grades at the beginning and then as the semester goes the grade moves but other teachers use the entire semester body of work in short it's a dizzying array of practices and what it does is it creates confusion among students as they move from class to class students will thrive with predictability and stability and this grading system is anything but that ebr is also frustratingly opaque in the end what students really care about is what they need to go to college and that's grades but ebr sort of keeps their grade mysterious until the end of the semester one student said she turned in one thing towards the end of the semester and her grade went from an a to a d and she was like you know shocked and surprised and and
013it's difficult and i've developed a rapport with students so they come to me and they say help me i don't know how to do this and this is another class it might be math or it might be physics or it might be whatever it is um and so i promised students i would speak out i promised i would tell their story because many of them said they feel afraid um students feel that um ebr sometimes is unfair for the kids that do turn things in on time and that do their best they're competing with the same kids to go to the same colleges and some kids will turn things in two weeks later and get the same grade even though it's two weeks late or some kids will try multiple three four attempts on something
014finally get an a and they're all getting a's but the students that did it right the first time feel like it's it's not fair that that they're all getting the same grade and then lastly the last thing is just that ebr is an obstacle to helping kids because parents have trouble figuring out what it is if i ask students do your parents look at your grades they say yes but they don't know they can't make sense of it they don't know how it's graded and then student services has trouble looking at grades like counselors and social workers and targeted tutors all look at the gradebook to try and help kids and they can't figure out like the array of things i mentioned earlier each teacher has but you can't tell that from looking at a
015grade book so they don't know how to help kids so um i just want to close i want to say thank you again for i appreciate so much the opportunity you've given me i've thrived i hope you appreciate everything i've given to you guys but please don't let this issue fall by the wayside um if you have an honest and safe conversation with teachers students and parents i think you'll find dozens and dozens if not hundreds that that all agree that like this is stressful and confusing and they would like to see some type of change but thank you all very much thank you appreciate it thank you thank you so chris let me just say a couple of things first of all thank you for your comments um we do appreciate them and we'll
016talk about them i also want to thank you for your time here at stevenson i know that you've worked real hard and we appreciate everything that you've done for the school so i want to thank you for the board thank you thank you i think that's funny i'm actually here because of that man and i never met him before my name is melanie gorrell i live in buffalo grove g-u-r-e-l thank you um this issue of mr salaturo's resignation is kind of being discussed and shattered a lot on several facebook groups twitter this is how it came to my attention and i'd like to read the following over time the social construction of white people have changed spelled c-h-n-a-g-e-d back then t-h-a-n the definition of who they considered white was the colonists that came to american
017and started a life here the people who immigrated here even though they have the same colored skin they weren't considered white still because they weren't from american now the definition of white is so much broad in comparison with asian people spelled incorrectly a while ago we would just refer to them as one big ethnicity but over time they have gotten broader and now we call them asian or japanese not capitalized about j-a-p-a-n-e-s period lower case and there's also so s-o-o-o many more races to be referred to in china just like being white the diffident i think they mean definition of it was very specific and not a lot of people was considering them as white but now a lot more people even people that lived in other countries called themselves white for white people we
018never got discriminated against i think they actually spelled that one right but for example african a-f-e-r-i-c-a-n american people just because they don't look like us we have stenotypes that they are always in the wrong and always doing something bad like crimes or drugs i have no idea what this is about according to mr salaturu this is in a college credit honors class at this school but because it's social studies it can't be graded on punctuation grammar spelling only on content and i can't even figure out what the content is that i'm supposed to be reading i don't know why this isn't a problem to some people but i think it's really a problem and this evidence-based grading that he's talking about i want a teacher like this to stay at stevenson i'm a tax paying
019parent i have a freshman in the school now he's got a few more years here this this piece of garbage that was turned in two weeks late and he can't grade it based on punctuality is is an example of failure i'm sorry my third grader knows better grammar than this person who wrote this besides the issue of this which is infuriating i wanted to ask the board and know if the public will have some transparency as you appoint two board members one of which was elected in the last election it was a very difficult campaign for the two ladies who fought to get in here the results were pretty close i'm not sure but maybe one of those ladies has put in an application i know a couple of other people have and i just
020want to know if there's going to be some transparency that when you do make the appointments the public will be told how many candidates applied and how you reached your decision to pick them thank you thank you very much thank you okay thank you for your comments uh we and you probably know this if you've seen other board meetings we don't respond to comments and meetings but someone will get back to you and talk to you okay any other public comments okay now we get to nicholas's last right um i'm i'm sorry i didn't hear you said her name so quickly okay i um to stevenson and i was like this is completely different um [Music] [Applause] so as most of you probably know this is the first year um okay so the first thing
021um um so the first two events i wanted to talk about was senior carnival as well as the senior sunrise so both of these were sponsored by our lovely ppa and i think the senior sunrise was super sentimental for everyone i was kind of sad a little bit late um but it was definitely great to see all my friends you might have to explain the dogs a little more because i don't know why signing a dog seems like a very strange thing to don't know just for do but um they gave us a little toy dog um and everyone had to record sharpies and just write your name whatever else kids loved it is awesome yeah it's every year i signed some seniors last um and then i think my favorite part of senior sunrise
022was there was a little bulletin with a map on it yes i unfortunately was on bus 18 so i was stuck at the prom table until about 10 but that's all good i think it was really great the food was really good um um culture and i've been really close with all the underclassmen this year so it's really great to kind of recap since we're moving on to the postseason right now the section was this weekend so it would be a great tip to have this season with my coaches as well and then spring fling uh that's coming up this friday and i know the springtime teams have been working really really hard i think the rest of student council's really kind of slowed down but for the assembly and spring fling team they've been
023working really hard every single day to get that ready for a bunch of students and i know we have um lots of teams lots of teams signed up really early this year which is kind of different from last year because last year springfield was our first in-person event um except for freshmen i guess um it was really nice to have these last couple of two weeks to decompress when you're not taking the testing i actually really liked the schedule hours and um chilling for four periods afterwards was nice and i like to say it went off without a hitch but um full disclosure on several occasions mr gobble saw me walk into the sports center at 8 30 stroll in with starbucks in my hand without my apid labels it was all good for micro
024or macro actually sign up for micro that's another story i found on sunday the tesla's this is it's a round of applause tournament for allied soccer between warren brown stevenson and london and there will be an after party in the sports center with carnival games house food and his free countries for allied soccer and the next thing was polish fest so my friend izzy is actually president and polish club so she got all of our friends to go it was really fun but when i went to pick up my car from then last um is homework for heroes so this is um the third time the students helping soldiers has collaborated with the athletic department this year they did one with football which was touchdowns for troops i think and then military appreciation day and
025also some like and stuff like that so that was really great to see um yep and we really enjoyed having this past year it's been really great i know i gave my speech a little bit last time because i wasn't sure so much thank you so much alex you've got she's got big shoes to fill yeah i remember you said that after kayla walked out for the last time it was true and you did it we really do appreciate you did it well professionally with a sense of humor that that was really pleasant and made it really enjoyable but it was incredibly informative and gave us a very good sense of what was going on in school from a student's perspective so we definitely appreciate what you've done this past year um and so we
026wish you all the best in the future stop by anytime you want and make sure you tell alex all your secrets so that she can continue i'll be here okay see you in two weeks graduation graduation well then we'll see you in two weeks in three days take care of you guys thank thank you playing well this weekend thanks guys all right so much fun to recognize our students um always a fun meeting um and next month uh although we'll be back in the little house uh we have our math team won a state championship badminton won a state championship and who knows okay um moving right along um mark um i'm not sure if you have anything to share but we're presenting tonight um the board of education our letters of intent for the
02723-24 school year you reviewed these last month as a first reading we talked about them briefly tonight we're presenting them to you for your approval can you have a motion first and second any uh discussion or questions for dr twaddell would you pull the board please no i agua all right gorson aye moons i shang no iceberg all right frost hi carrie's six to nothing okay the next item is our approval of an intergovernmental agreement for the sharing of student data for educational study um if if you recall right i think literally the month before the pandemic uh we were tying up some of our loose ends regarding our intergovernmental agreements with our feeder districts trying to make sure that we can pass data between the districts um in a way that meets all of
028our legal requirements so carol's been working really hard to finish that project up uh district 79 and district 103 signed those intergovernmental agreements had those boards approve them tonight they're being presented to you for your approval again with district 79 in district 103. is this because we didn't get them done because of covenant yeah things kind of got sideways with the whole pandemic thing um and i think this buttons it up right district oh 96. they've already signed so we just need 102. so we'll get that we'll work on that but we were doing them literally february march and april of 2020 and things got sideways so got it yeah okay any further questions uh can you pull the board please certainly arguable grayson aye moon's eye weisberg all right russ hi no hi here's
029six to nothing okay and then tonight we're also presenting uh to you our summer curriculum proposals for the summer of 2022. we'd share these last month as a first reading but mark has worked with all the directors on these projects making sure that they're aligned to our goals projects and initiatives specifically our formative assessment practices sel literacy tech and our curricular alignment to common core and then in addition financially sean were right in line with where we've been in the past in terms of the overall budget for summer curriculum so tonight we're presenting you the 2022 summer curriculum projects for your approval can i have a motion so much second any questions on the proposals uh pull the board please grierson all right wounds oh i forgot uh whitesburg for us no hi all right
030well carry six to nothing okay and then two first readings for tonight uh the first is a first reading of our student guide book uh for the 22-23 school year so again this is just a first reading we're going to give you a chance to look it over this is a redline version troy and ken has worked with the deans on this um there's new most of these changes are editing there's some new sections on health and wellness and student mental health so you can take a chance take a look at those over the course of the next month we'll answer any questions that you might have in june and then in addition um we're bringing forward our approval of the final 2021-2022 school calendar um there are no modifications if you remember each year
031in may and june carol we have the board approve the calendar from the current year and then carol submits that with isb before june 30th so can i ask you a question um can you talk a little bit i looked at the changes in the student guide book and the changes for mental health i thought were really interesting can you just explain a little bit what was trying to give us a little overview i'm so sorry just the work that you and ken did on the mental health pieces of the guidebook yeah so we're just working hard to make sure that we're clear with where uh students can get assistance and how the student support team works for students and so which person is like what's a different job so if a student doesn't happen
032to know the definition of the difference between a social worker a site they'll know if i want to go to someone where might they go and then all the a full update now that we've built and we changed the um east side a full update of where everyone is so where they can find people so in some respects you're codifying for lack of a better word kind of the practices so that they're clear in the in the handbook exactly any other questions for the admin team the first reads okay so personnel section um we have our program approvals the human resources report and we will not need an executive session following the meeting and that takes us to the business section and sean we begin with the adoption of the 2021 2022 amended budget and
033establishing a public hearing that's correct at this point in time we need to open a public hearing for the proposed 2021-22 amended budget and before we do that just want to remind um the board back in march we um put the amended budget on display and there were two major items that we needed to amend the budget for one was the bond sale that we had conducted back in february at the time we weren't sure the exact dollar amount so we didn't budget for it and then we also decreased many of our expenditures we had you know done a good job of kind of tightening the belt if you will um so we wanted to recognize that as well so if the board would be so kind as to open a public hearing on the
034proposed 2021-22 amended district 125 budget can we have a motion to open for public hearings so first and second voice vote all in favor opposed passes uh any discussion this discussion in public comment if there's any okay can i have a motion to close the public hearing on the human budget again a voice photo in favor opposed it passes um now that the public hearing is closed we have a motion to approve or adopt the amended budget is presented any other questions for sean on the budget which has been on uh display since march sean did you get any questions between when it was open from the public no no i had no emails or questions or phone calls okay no other questions would you please pull the board westberg hi frost hi no hi
035all right well i carries six to nothing okay and then sean uh we need a notice uh authorization to public to publicize um the adoption of the 2022-2023 budget correct and earlier uh this uh this evening at our finance committee meeting we did talk about the highlights of the 23 fiscal year 23 budget which were in line with the cost of living or the inflation from year to year which regulates um how much revenue we can receive um we are trying to and we've kept our expenditures in line um with that cpi so there there are two motions tonight one is to actually put the budget on display and then the second would be to set a public hearing for our next board meeting in june on the 21st of 2022. so first can i
036have the motion uh to put the tentative budget on display for public hearing he knew that i said it amy seconded uh would you pull the board please first hi no i argue gorson aye moon's eye whisper all right it carries six to nothing okay and then i need a motion to set the public hearing for reviewing the 2022-23 budget in june first and second any questions about that would you please pull the board certainly no hi artwell gorson aye moon's eye whisperer all right hi here is six to nothing okay thank you um the next item is uh an item that doesn't typically happen but we do have are asking for emergency approval on our stadium lighting we have earlier this spring had a situation where on the two north banks of our lights
037in the stadium went dark we still had the two south lights on so they were very functional we were able to get one of the banks of lights on the north end to turn back on after investigation we did find that the electrical wire which is installed at a time that code didn't require the electrical cables to be buried in conduit and we also found that those wires are actually buried underneath the stadium turf so what we are recommending is uh to fix um the situation is a couple of things first we want to go ahead and re-route the electrical outside of the field stadium outside of the stadium turf so that it if there's ever in a situation in the future we don't have to worry about digging up the turf for the repairs
038secondly we want to go ahead and encase that electrical wiring in conduit and then the third part is really an energy savings and carbon footprint model is where we want to switch out the actual lamps and fixtures that are on the poles from high pressure sodium to [Music] an led light that operational savings the good news for that operational savings is that we'll save approximately fifteen thousand dollars just on the lighting um and then i was able to find out um late uh earlier this afternoon actually we submitted the um when we submitted the grant to comed they actually have um two new grants where we can save up to 40 of the cost of not just the lamp fixtures but also of the installation of the wiring um so we're hoping to um take
039advantage of that i won't know the exact dollar amount until comet approves the um the grant but we didn't go ahead and um uh submit that application so all in all when you factor in the the trenching the pulling of the wire on the capping of the old wire removal of the old wire and the new lamps we are asking that the board of education approve that emergency replacement of the stadium lights at a cost of nazi to not exceed 540 000 can you have a motion uh questions for sean sean to say these lights were end of life would be an understatement right that would be correct these are the original lamps and fixtures that were installed when the lights came into play back in the 80s 80s correct when the lights i remember
040when we installed it i know from the old lady in the board but um there was no turf correct that was grass at the time they just trenched across the field yep one to the other and so be it now we have turf that's correct life has changed uh i'm sure diane hoda would be pleased to know that we're not taking them now but we are replacing them for something better because she was the the spearhead of that fundraising to put stadium lights in correct and one of the other benefits too is um because they're led lights we can get the same amount of output with a little with less energy but we can also turn on one or two banks and not have to turn on all four banks at the same time which
041when we have early or late practices depending on what the practice is we might not have to turn them on and be kind of create that light pollution if you will for our neighborhood there's four banks of lights and um what's that four yeah so each pole has um my goodness i think we're have to go back and look but i think there's uh something like 30 lights on each bank right now and we're going to be able to replace it with less lights because we won't because of the led output that's coming from them and this cost is before before any rebates correct and we also um sean and i had a conversation earlier about whether there's any alternatives and because of the the way this is laid where the correct the wires are
042the conduit the end of life with the lights there's really nowhere else no real alternative no and even if we didn't even if we decided to trench it through the field and directional bore the cost is the same actually it would be a little bit more the direction or underneath the turf and the problem again boring underneath the turf is now if there's an issue you actually have to dig up the turf which in itself is an expensive proposition and then utilizes our outdoor classroom and the turf that we use for the athletic programs inoperable for a period of time will this be all completed before next fall and we start using it again so the safety issues we'll have it up and ready before august and we have backups in case in the in
043the meantime but and this will you put out the bed i'm sorry say that again no this is already been um we used the emergency action where we didn't bid this but what we did do is purchase it on a co-op so that we knew we were getting the best price that has already been competitively bid on our behalf by the government so that part was in fact bid and the um installation we're actually using one of the electricians that's currently on site for one of our other projects and got quotes from three different electricians to make sure that the quotes were in line with industry averages if you will okay any other questions on the motion would you please pull the board erwin grayson hi moon's eye weisberg hi frost no hi motion care
044is six to nothing cake shawn adoption of resolution of points uh i am an imrf authorized agent correct so um imrf is the illinois municipal retirement fund that is the pension fund that um covers all of our non-certified employees um every year we need to appoint our authorized agent uh in for the last 20 years it has been maureen owens maureen owens is graduating or retiring depending on how you want to look at it this june um lorena garcia is replacing her and so tonight we are asking that the board of education approved the resolution to appoint lorena garcia as the authorized agent for imrf reporting purposes uh any questions for sean and just to be clear she's not replacing murray maureen's irreplaceable but she will be filming that transitioning into that role she is
045that's correct we're going to miss marie she's special most definitely lorraine is pretty amazing she's lorraine is amazing too but martin's special yeah absolutely uh would you please pull the board certainly corson aye moon's eye whisper frost hi no hi all right well carrie's six to nine okay you have two um first readings there the first is the approval of the 2022-2023 non-union administrative salary pools we'll share more information on that at our may board meeting where we review administrative team performance and then the second first reading is approval of the detention center and governmental agreement uh renewal um and we'll bring that to the board um as we do every three years sean in june correct correct yeah we're just waiting for the um lake county judicial consultant to basically give us that new
046agreement okay and then there are no foias this month and that brings us to the consent can you have a motion for the consent agenda any questions for eric on the items on the consent agenda uh would you please pull the board yes wounds all right voice work for us no approved six to nothing all right and uh the only item i had for tonight were all of those ambassador awards uh that was pretty special so troy thank you for being our mc you did a great job and mark thank you for uh coordinating you were fantastic um we appreciate your guys help and it's really great to see so many kids get recognized that was a lot of fun and a lot more to come and let's do it again in june how about
047that uh the june board meeting will be in the little house uh we have a couple meetings before then and graduation coming up uh at the now center is it then now what is it no it's the uh so um looking forward to seeing everybody there for the athletes yes the monday uh sorry tuesday 9 a.m right here the 31st first yeah that's correct right and we'll do a special graduation for our all of our kids who are in competition that friday night who can't attend and so um we'll do a mini graduation we think there'll be about 10 or 12 kids that day so it was really nice we've done it before every year every year breakfast at 8 30 and graduation at nine and it'll be the shortest graduation ten kids but so
048still congratulations for that and then we have the um the dates would include uh we've got the retirement all right if you're coming to that um and there's a number of events obviously there in the board book that are coming up may is full of meetings that we've got if we're keeping if we're keeping the athletes here should we keep our ropes no no i don't think we've worn them i don't think we know yes typically not excuse them you know one quick question um i heard a rumor that we set a record try not to believe in rumors yeah that we had eight kids accepted to harvard out of this year's class how many dates i cannot i cannot confirm that rumor i don't know but i can find out for you what i
049what i'm curious about which is generally how the class how the class did i know that the other class was generally speaking they got into more of their first choice colleges than any other class before them because i know that the performance of the tests and everything which has been skyrocketed so all the student achievement score you'll see in august in our retreat all the student achievement scores are up um and what's really amazing about that is that's in the middle of the pandemic you know so kids managed to really um do well not that they weren't stressed we know the kids were stressed and it was a hard you know two years um but they still managed to do really well and and again some of that data is self-reported too right so again
050you can't you have to take it as self-reported data but yeah the kids were reporting they were getting into more of their first choice colleges than ever before any other questions for the team then can i have a motion to adjourn so second first and second uh all in favor opposed uh we are adjourned thank you thank you
