cat doesn't really like to cuddle or anything he's not a big cuddler so in order to like show my love for him I'll pick him up so he can look at the fish shank a little easier on my counter and I don't know that's it well I really enjoyed painting him yeah it's beautiful thank you and everyone that comes to our district office when they're waiting the lobby will be able to admire a cow say the best part is a cat and cow I was hoping we could ask [Laughter] questions questions I I I have to know how the cat ising out so my friend fostered him as a kitten and when she first got him she like invited me over immediately to come see him because I love cats and she was like trying
to pick names and I was like you know he really looks like a cow you should just name him cow it's easy and simple so it well thank you I know you have a sibling that's graduating soon across the street right so we've got a gift for you and if you wouldn't mind we typically like take pictur is that thank you [Applause] okay so um at this time I'd like to invite our high school principal Mr Steve McWilliams up and he is going to um present his Art Award winner we switch the slide so the piece of art that caught my eyes uh were from was made by Lars forsberg Lars why don't you come on up so uh he actually had a couple of pieces of Arts that were together and they were both
um architectural Urban Architectural pieces like this um I just like the the lines and the way that it kind of draws your eye into the into the the distance there I thought it was a really good use of depth of field and like photography too so really caught my eye it was like instantaneous that's nice so um I want to congratulate Lars and maybe you can explain a little bit about what your um what your motivation was me and my extended family were all out on trip to Norway and whenever I go somewhere I always like try take pictures especially urban areas and I like my thought process for this picture was I wanted like mine too congratulations this will be hanging in the main office of the U of the high school and uh

to our seats okay keep going yep all right so we have another um student uh recognition this evening um we have our student from Barbara Rose Elementary School so this year we've um this is the last stop we have now had a student student rep from every one of our schools join us this year um at our board meetings just sharing highlights and things that are going on at all of our schools we have so many amazing things but to hear it from the students perspective I think is really powerful so um please join me in welcoming Demi delig gianis so the microphone is there if you'd like to share with us some updates about Rose School hi good evening my name is Demi delis today I'm going to be sharing with you some things
about Barbara Rose School such as highlights at Rose things I'm looking forward to at Rose school what makes Rose a special place to learn and some personal success skills hope you enjoy first I'm first I'm going to be sharing with you my biggest highlight at Barbara Rose school this was tough to side after lots of thinking I have decided my biggest highlight was the fifth grade play Finding Nemo I so grateful our school Rose gets to present a play it was an amazing experience I was lucky enough to have the read the lead role of Dory the play brought all of the fifth graders together and I learned many valuable skills the play forced me to have better time manag management skills with all the after school practices homework and other extra activities I'm involved
with I learned how to collaborate with my classmates better communication skills and I got to express my create creativity side there was also a lot of critical thinking all the practicing was worth it and after the Showcase we even got to go bowling it was so much fun none of this would be possible without the amazing support of our amazing staff members and our music teacher Miss flick next I'm going I'm looking forward to the end of the year party at Rose this has been a tradition every year since kindergarten this is one of the most fun parties ever I still remember in fourth grade we got to tie-dye shirts make ice cream Sundays and play in a gaming truck this year we are going to Urban Air I'm also looking forward to field it
another yearly tradition additionally Rose is a special and unique place to learn because all the teachers and staff members are supportive kind and positive this has helped me and many others to have a strong support system at our school I feel it is very important to have positive staff that encourages students all of the row School staff members have characteristics of patients they all have passion for teaching and listen well for individual means there are also so many activities and Club clubs at rows that you can be involved in I have enjoyed I have enjoyed being part of stinger singers running club student council girls basketball and the speech tournament where I won first place two years in a row also at Rose school I have learned collaborate well with others through all the activities
and clubs I have been able to be a part of this has also help me in the classroom I feel that Rose school has definitely prepared me for Middle School in conclusion Barbra B Rose Elementary School is a great school thank [Applause] you really involved everything Sports theater so which Middle School you uh station um I have my mom and my principal my home room teacher and then one of the other teachers thank you learn well Demi just thank you for rounding out all of our school's records I I had asked I said right before we started how how you feel are you ready and the crowd behind that she just anounced said Demi was born ready for this and you you did an excellent job tonight so thank you for providing that report and
uh for middle school next year just keep swimming nice yeah all right we have a certificate for you and a little bit of barington Swag bag for you but can we do a picture together yeah all right come right up [Applause] Steve you're missing all the fun okay we still have more recognition we still have more recognition we're not done that's right um so our next agenda item we are going to recognize our um faculty and staff from throughout the district so recently um we attended the Lake County educator of the Year Awards um this is a new program that uh barington school district is part of the Lake County Regional Office of Education and they start a new program where um all of the districts throughout uh the county are able to recognize individuals
in different categories and so we've invited our nominees here this evening to be recognized also by our Board of Education you can see on uh the screen here here are some of the uh pictures we took a couple weeks ago when we gathered in at the Lake County Fairgrounds um so if we could have our um nominees come up when I read your name and be recognized um by our board and Janina is making her way we do have uh some gifts but I thought maybe we would announce each individual and if you can come up and shake hands with the board starting with Leah and working your way this way then maybe we can have a conversation after we've not recognized everyone does that sound good okay so our first uh Nomine was uh
for the category of classroom diverse learner teacher Jenny Morales if you could come up [Applause] we also had Classroom middle school teacher Mike Nelson it's Mike here tonight you guys want classroom Elementary Early Childhood teacher Sandra Chang [Applause] in the category of Educational Service Personnel we had Kelly [Applause] grunfeld I'm gonna try to be like Burker with the thin microphone that's what it's reminding me of I'm going to try to stand so um next we have early career educator Alejandra [Applause] Vasquez sure and our next uh nominee was for student support Tracy Walsh [Applause] and in the category for school administrator we had Michelle Tapia [Applause] and our final category of all the high school teachers that were nominated we nominated Tom bradm but he also was the overall winner for all of the Lake
County High School teachers so Tom please come up so we could have not we have amazing I I say this all the time you know we have amazing um teachers faculty and staff throughout District 220 um we we are so fortunate we we could have selected a number of individuals um you know this group I think really reflects just how um special and amazing our staff is I'm really um proud that Lake County came up with us to give the ability for our school districts throughout our County um to take the time to make sure that we acknowledge and recognize um all that you do uh for our students and families and parents and so on behalf of the school district thank you for all that you do each and every day for our students
does anyone questiones so awesome I I could tell a story but I think most of you but I have to to say like before my kids went to high school a very dear friend of mine said doesn't matter what he's teaching make sure your kids take a class from Mr B Meer doesn't matter with the class just make sure they take it and then come TR um I sent a note to my old well first I first I read through all about 80 comments on LinkedIn this morning just talking about your prior students about how much you've changed their life and so I sent a note to my oldest child today and they wrote me back he is the reason that I am a computer science teacher and he is the teacher that I aspire
to be [Applause] many computer scientists you know just the the number of students that came forward the people that talked about you to was just incredible would any of you like to share anything off the board I'll speak for everyone and say thank you and thank you for this recognition to our board Dr winlan we all appreciate [Laughter] it thank you how about one more round of Applause photo than you than you [Applause] I know wow you really got to change the order for me um so next up is my report um I just wow I mean what a great um we heard from Demi we heard from the um Arts the art awards for annual art Awards and um to have to be able to see all these excellent teachers is just amazing and
just a really magnifies empowering personal excellence in every learner I'm sure there'll be some talk about our new uh skirt here but um help remind all of us um thank you all for your patience especially with me as as we formerly voted um to allow Steve Wang to participate I just wanted to make sure that the board understands that that we can participate remotely but we I'm going to send everyone an email because I want to make sure we follow the our policy exactly there's four reasons why we can we can participate remotely and we need to make sure that we are and I'm not trying to point out Steve by any means all of us make sure that we follow um our policy which not everybody has a time when you've got a family
emergency or something to go and look at the policy so I'll make it easy for you and give you a email that you can pick which of the reasons and then send it to Dr wi and I make sure that we understand that you participate um remotely um Lots going on as I mentioned uh two weeks ago um I was able to um attend the culinary um Arts lab openhouse I think that was last week so thanks again to the 220 Educational Foundation for their support of the intern catering program we all were able to enjoy the Creations by the honor students um my personal favorite was the cheese fi churo was really excellent it was so good um just delicious we also that same day there was a district barbecue which is also a
delicious event and I just want to commend Lucero um for the sauce that we used on the burgers it was quite delightful um the referendum advisory committee met last night I was unable to attend so we'll hear a little bit more from Mary and Leah who were able to attend during committee reports also last week the barington area Development Council had their annual dinner Dr winlan gave the keynote speech um which included an overview of 220 happenings and a bit of 220 history that was very nice um it was well received by all um and we had a you had a fine introduction I have to say by pass board president Penny Casmir who coincidentally that evening was also named to be the new president of the barington area of go Council so that was
exciting as well so even though May is more than half over there's still lots of exciting things happening it was good to see on um senior walks started happening this week um I think we've got one graduation or or recognition ceremony going on tonight um the incubators pitch night is tomorrow night several board members are going to be there to um help serve um so please try to be there at like 350 so we can kind of get organized um those of you that are able to attend that um and graduation is this Thursday for barington high school um and board members we ask that you be there by 5:30 the ceremon is going to start at 6:30 and please also send me the students in which you would like to hand out diplomas so
we can make sure that we don't have any duplicates and that we don't have any conflicts and then another reminder June 4th um we do have our board um self- evaluation so meeting at 4:00 and um possibly even 3:30 on that day so please mark your calendars make sure that you're going to be there we have another volunteer opportunity as Leah spoke about I think at our last meeting um on June 1st um so please keep that in mind I'm not sure we have times yet though right 8 to 11 weather permitting okay I will I will get that out to you so you don't have to uh write that down um okay so just yeah excellent so I think that's all I have that is viory so next up is public comment we didn't
have anyone signed up for public comment so we're g to move right into dr's report okay thank you so as mentioned uh we have Middle School recognition ceremonies going on today tomorrow and on Thursday we will have our class of [Music] I'm going to Wisconsin Madison to major in elementary education I've taken Child Development preschool 1 preschool 2 in education and clinical education it's been a really great opportunity for me I've been able to be in the preschool level um kindergarten through fifth grade I observed I've also been in the Middle School classrooms and high school I'm really lucky I had the opportunity cuz at a lot of colleges you're not able to get into the classroom until junior year and I just have that Head Start of I know what grade I want to
teach and that I actually like being in the classroom I'm going to go to Indiana University and I will be studying business my freshman year I started off in biology and my senior year I went back to like horiculture where we learned more about like planting the plants and like all different kinds of like um landscaping design just learning about it more can kind of give me a broader like Horizons to gives me an options to like maybe explore going into agriculture with a business side in the future I'm going to be attending the University of Michigan for computer engineering so starting my sophomore year with Mr breem I took AP Computer Science a and then my junior year I took computer science data structures and right now I'm in computer science Advanced topics I
think it's pretty neat that we get these Pathways you know most schools they'll stop at like AP Computer Science a but the fact that we have like these two other classes that go beyond are really nice it allows students to explore a little more indepth something that you wouldn't really be able to do unless you were in a college environment I'm going to try and take more classes at Harper this summer I'm going to take a flun botomy class I really want to be like in the medical field I really want to help others so here at the high school we are required to do 40 hours of taking care of patients for clinical I feel like that really helped me out and it's going to like definitely help me out when I go into
nursing because I already have that experience [Music] um five of the seals um this year we have students that will be receiving it's okay we'll get there I'll just keep I'll keep filling in we'll get to the next side there we go four we have four of the seals um for students that will be receiving um in in these areas and if we go to the next slide these are the students and it's pretty impressive how this program has grown we have over a hundred students that are in our first College and Career pathway area of Agriculture food and natural resources if you skip to the next slide um we have uh nearly 40 students that are earning uh that seal in Health Sciences and technology and our last two we have two students you
saw Megan she was the first student that spoke uh about her education pathway for human public services and then we have three students um you heard Daniel he spoke about his experience in information and Technology pathway so congratulations to all of our students if we go back one slide do we have any students here tonight because we did we have over I think Dr burn 130 stud students that earned the4 how many 104 104 any students here tonight that are earning the endorsement there you go congratulations there's it is summer the seniors are done and there is a boat cruise tonight so we did invite them but I can't blame them at all that they if they didn't choose to be here but you are here is there anything you'd like to share with the
board as far as your experience in your pathway maybe a microphone we get micone Bob so um next year I'm planning on going to Michigan State and uh majoring in business and I've only been at bton high school for two years but last year I took the incubator program and that's kind of the only reason like why I want to take business now and that program really shaped my whole like understanding of business just it was such a great opportunity to like introduce students to the whole aspect of business and like how it works like creating your own uh startup company and then if you uh if you receive funding then pursuing it in accelerator it's just a great like thing that the district has for students thank you well congrats um Dr burn do
you I think you have some cookies I do have some cookies okay St get you got to get a personalized cookie from the area you're studying right all right I know this out of graduation so while we're passing you know the cookies you know thank you for for your comments um you know this is a rigorous program it it does allow our students beyond the required courses at the high school to put in that additional time and get those um clinical experiences in the pathway that they're interested and be able to um earn this designation and it will be um like I said part of their diploma and in the program uh Thursday evening so congratulations to all of our students uh continue to be impressed with how this program has really grown and provided
more opportunities to our students here in barington all right so we did the superintendent and the uh principal Art Award but we also uh last week had our students um throughout our elementary schools annually we invite our student artists U from each of the schools to help share their artistic talents and their pieces here at the district office um I think this this is one of the coolest things that we do um this place would be pretty boring with gray walls if we didn't have all the student artwork I I'd love admiring it as we're walking up and down the halls and having our art showcase uh every year it provides an opportunity for us to actually talk with the students learn a little bit about why they created the piece why they made the
decisions that they did it's just a really neat program so um displayed here is a few pictures from the event last week it's a lot of fun if we go to my next slide so tonight a little bit later in our program Dr Carpenter is going to talk and provide an update on our strategic plan the board may recall that when we were developing our strategic plan one of the important elements was to really think about a learner profile and the skills that we wanted our students to learn grow and develop in addition to studying different curricular areas right and so I think these this is one of the things that in addition to all the things we do here in barington I think this is one of the things that we provide that really
sets us apart and so uh the pictures here this is a display at Grove Avenue Elementary School and what Grove staff decided to do is to think about all the different areas of that H oops of that honeycomb as far as creativity collaboration problem solving uh advocacy and empathy all of the areas that are part of this learning profile all year long they had the students developing these skills having experiences in the area and then the students all the students at every grade level represented what they learned and what skills they developed and so for like advocacy and empathy I was reading them today some students talked about well we went and visited Feed My Starving Children that was what one of the the the girls wrote in second grade that was her experience of
how she developed skills in that area so these are murals that the staff created with all of the students and I just thought what a great way to actually take that learning and then make it into a beautiful piece of art that's decorating the school so I thought that was amazing it is amazing it really is that's a the one at every every so this is at Grove okay this was a project that Grove did but every child at Grove is represented in those color bands by grade level and then every honeycomb belongs to to an individual child and the skills that they developed in each of the Le profil I mean it's just amazing I just I stood there for a while and just kind reading and walking along and seeing what the the
children had uh you know from their eyes what what areas they developed uh throughout the grades really cool yeah got to get to Grove got to get to Grove it's up on the walls you'll if you stop by you can see it all right um so it we are concluding the school year um and so I do have a couple uh piece of information about as we head into summer vacation um annually I provide updates uh with our summer school some of our students in our district uh we offer um a robust summer school programming um at all of our grade levels as well as for those students that um would benefit from extending their school year and continuing to study throughout the summer months um so our uh enrollment continues to grow um we
actually um have a few less students at Elementary about the same at middle school and more students participating in summer school at our high school level um an update for this year that I put on the slide is not only do we offer uh ways for growth and learning uh for our students but you'll see a new box that I didn't display last year at this time um our staff both our teachers and our classified staff also participate in professional development I am very proud to report that um next uh next week when we uh exit the school year we're offering a new program for our classified staff called you first and we have over a thousand uh staff members that are signed up for different courses in that program and then throughout the summer
months a variety of professional development activities and again over a thousand uh members of our staff that are signed up for different courses so thought that was pretty cool and then lastly we are heading off uh to Summer there's a a number of activities this week as we close out the school year I think one of our um um finest Traditions that we started a number of years ago is our senior walks and so both yesterday and today mother nature sure cooperated we had beautiful sunny nice days uh to see our seniors come back to their Elementary School and and walk the school and be congratulated by their younger peers and reminisce with former staff members one of the coolest things um I I'll point out so and that top photo it feels like I'm
gushing about Grove tonight um but those are Grove students they did their walk and they actually had them gather back in the gym and played their fifth grade end of your video of them as fifth graders and I just thought that was so cute they actually sat on the floor together like they were fifth graders again and they were like nudging each other and pointing and seeing themselves as you know back in fifth grade and then that lower picture I thought that was pretty impressive that's the um Rose all of the students gathered at Rose uh from the senior class and they filled the playground for that photo which I thought was pretty cool so anyway I wish everyone um a wonderful summer break and that concludes my report awesome yeah lots of good stuff
any questions Steve I'll I'll just I don't want to be forget that you're there if you've got something you want to comment on just screen I guess yes okay so let's move on to informational reports there any comments or questions about the informational reports all right hearing none let's move to committee reports we got policy policy committee met and we're gonna have some updates today on AES not new updated and rised okay Equity committee Matt I was uh with Katie the board Representatives so May 16th was our district Equity team meeting and as a team we reflected on the April presentation by Dr Ladson billing I unfortunately couldn't be there but there was such enthusiasm from the group uh in terms of what they learned and how they felt uh you know very very uh
ver verified on what they're doing um the team members then shared their experiences and Reflections related to their Equity Action project completed during the school year each of the schools through middle school and high school um have have teams and and um so you know there were there were projects that were completed and and cohorts that that uh really had a successful year they discussed the revised Danielson framework you've heard this again and again but it's really been the the basis for this year um and how the implementation of the this revised framework has impacted educational spaces and again it was a very um positive conversation um and last we provided an update on Community engagement planning including an update on the CommunityWide book study on Breaking the code with Gabriella I passed out to
each board member um and they're having this uh translated into Spanish so we're GNA really have a kind of robust discussion um in the fall a CommunityWide kind of book study and um we're looking forward to that very much so these books were provided from by the district for everybody and just a reminder the this book was written by BHS students so it's very impressive that um you know they've come out with this and they've you know had a printer and and a publisher and we're giving them some business because the district bought how many copies did we 2500 25 200 so we're getting them started which is great believe they're alled by the educ that's right thank you to the Education Foundation that's right exactly that's great and then yesterday our referendum committee met
this is our community group who's going to be advising us as a board on you know what what they're sensing the community wants from our upcoming we're hoping for an upcoming referendum for 2024 um and um it was a phenomenal session um it's I was surprised at how quickly they came to consensus um and we'll be discussing this in much more detail at our next board meeting but just want to know thank all the community members that um were involved and of course EO Sullivan and there's going to be a very robust report at our uh June um fourth board meeting uh both with the um chair people of the committee and also eio Sullivan from the phone survey and the computer survey so we have something to look forward to and that'll keep the
board busy this summer to really hash out exactly what our plans are going to be so lots of Engagement I'm happy to be part of that yeah I mean we have 60 or 70 members of that that committee it's really excellent well they go back to their organizations and get feedback so it's representing and representing so it's it's more Community input which helps us to understand what what people are interested in and know we want to listen to everybody get a lot of going facilities met since the last meeting as well um and I were there and there was an update about solar um there's been work going on behind the scenes that we haven't heard about that will be coming to the board meeting soon um that some of the work that we saw
presented um months ago about solar panels on three of our buildings and how the process keeps going we haven't missed any opportunities with money from the state of Illinois um we're still on track if we get started by the end of 2024 um it's a little different than regular building projects you know the things we usually see are we have a project we might have an architect we might have a contractor we get bids this is a little bit different I'm gon to get the names of it wrong if you can help me design build so it's a design build so there's less steps and there's two primary actors so and they can't be the same so we've spent some time or I haven't spent time our Administration has spent some time finding providers who've
done this kind of work for school districts who know how to do this um and finding right person the right organization and then um over the summer I think we'll be looking for some bids um and then it'll come back to the board when they're successfully finding this and it'll keep moving along so it may come back this summer hopefully but no offices at this moment because there's not like endless providers we're kind of on the front end of this so it's not like oh everyone's done this it's like nope we're kind of leading the path or we're near leading the path so we're going to you know be careful about choosing our providers yeah it's new design build process we're so looking forward to the final process and and getting this done this we've
talked about this for a while so absolutely in the coming months uh there'll be more to come uh coming right back to the facilities committee work we're excited this is this is your Capstone project it is and we're we're going to see if it if the timing works for that to happen or yeah if if not it'll be right afterward excellent I had the opportunity to meet at the Ed Foundation board um since the last meeting as well and they were um talking about the grants that they give out they give out two sets of Grants and in the spring it's a pi Grant I think um you know 3.14 um and it's an opportunity for um um teachers to apply for Grants and um there was lots of lots of lots of Grants applied
for lots of kindergarten grants lots of outdoor spaces which is really exciting to hear it seems to go in waves and um Dr Burns is involved in helping you know work through the process um a few grants didn't work out but money popped up from other places or some kind of planning for the future came out of it so lots of excitement they opened it up to student organizations so if you have students who have an organization who have an idea um keep that in mind for the next BRS um that was really exciting and good to hear um and they were also very excited about the new um Fine Arts spaces that are going to come to life this summer um oh and um lots of excitement about um The Culinary Arts open house
that happened last week the business incubator pitch night tomorrow night um and The Innovation not an innovation showcase um sorry the pitch night happen already The Innovation showcase um and business incubator pitch night tomorrow so all those good things coming up again we just have to keep thanking the Educational Foundation they're so involved in everything that we do and uh it's just such a help and such a supplement to what we can do well I keep hearing that you're first business incubators we're kind of the flagship in the country and others come to look at our business incubator program and admire it and say oh we could do that to we are the first we are the first the first all right any other reports all right let's move right into our consent agenda do
we have a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented so moved all right uh make sure you see the revised Personnel report um that is in the consent agenda we also have May 7th both open and closed minutes and we have several Finance reports we have the wage report um for fiscal year 24 we have revenue and expenditures for April of 2024 Treasures report for April and the bill list for May any questions or comments all right hearing none let's go ahead and do a roll call Barry Al Schuler yes Leah collister lazari yes Katie carum yes Sandra Bradford yes Steve Wang Diana Clapton yes all right motion passes we have several um action items to go through before we get to our discussion items first up is do we have a motion to
app the bingson high school trip to the United Kingdom in 20 June of 2025 so move second right very exciting yeah um so trips within the United States do not require board approval but we have two trips tonight uh the trip to the United Kingdom is one of those trips our choir is planning to go um for our policy Bo needs to receive the request UH 60 days prior to the trip and approve it two considering Mr MC Williams anything to add for these two trips this is the choir trip this one is the choir Tri nope okay all right aoll call Leah Collis lazari yes Barry aler yes Diana Clapton yes Sandra Bradford yes Katie carum yes Steve Wang yes all right motion passes do we have a motion to approve the barington high
school trip to Canada for August of 2024 for the drama club all right very similarly same expectations this is the drama club a little sooner this would be a last year I love that they're doing this why can't we do it before school so they're not missing school I straford goes all through the summer June July August so why are we waiting till school starts just because I hate to see them missing three days of school to just Steve do you know of any conflicts that may exist no I'm excited they're doing this I just s have there ever been any conflicts with a students not being able to uh with the the day or two that they're missing that you're aware of are out I think the other challenge is it is summer break
and this is a club and so typically clubs participate during the school year right so yeah trying to balance that guess I always ask the same question I just I'm always cognizant of you know the missing school but I certainly understand it's a worthwhile endeavor Steve Wang Sandra Bradford yes Katie carum yes Diana Clapton yes Barry aler yes Leah collister lazari yes all right motion passes um do we have a motion to approve the modified bingson High School athletic program donation agreement second all right um anything you want to Rie on that yeah I think the word modified describes it uh this is an individual we've already had an athletic agreement with but changed uh organizations and so the modified agreement that's attached reflects the new reporting station so just changing the advertising the rest
of the terms remain the same how I do okay did we purchase the sign or she provided for us to hang up she provided oh I was just wondering yep okay well excuse me she paid for right this right we we took care of getting it yeah I knowed all right let's do a roll call Katie carum yes Sandra Bradford yes Steve Wang yes Leah collister lazari yes Diana Clapton yes barel Cher yes all right motion passes um one more action item do we have a motion to approve the BSO memorandum of understanding second you w to sure sure I've been trying to do short synopsis uh so you know during my superintendent report I did talk about you know in the summertime over a thousand individuals from our bco are participating in that uir
program but there also is professional development that occurs during the school year for them to continue to receive that that that training um and this memorandum U solidifies some of the ways that they're able to participate as well as the compensations are for credit TR anything to add okay yeah so just thanks also to the B for this was something that was discussed during our last negotiation so thanks for more members and Diana who participated in that um and U we knew this was coming we the time to to talk through it and out to to meet the needs so appreciate roll call Steve Wang Leah collister lazari yes Diana Clapton yes Sandra Bradford yes Barry El Schuler yes Katie carum yes all right Moes thank you board um let's move into our discussion items
okay our first discussion item uh every year we are fortunate we have uh amazing uh support from both our PTO and our Education Foundation and we alternate every year an opportunity to provide an update and highlight from those organizations tonight we have our PTO on the agenda so I'd like to invite Gwen carora one of our PTO president chairs to come up and provide some updates on the work of our PTO welcome hi thank you carora I a co-chair of the president's council with this year next year be kinging all right so who we are we're 12 separate organizations representing the unique collect culture of traditions of our individual schools um each organization is membership as made of of parents and teachers from the individual schools we work in partnership with each School's principal um
to obtain our goals for those schools so who are our schools we work with the Early Learning Center all eight of our elementary schools both station and prair campus the barington high school and then our sister School St ants so we all collectively work together how we communicate with the district and all of the students here we have monthly PTO meetings um that are at each home school we have our president's Council which is all the presidents from each SCH that meet twice a month we have e newsletters each schools have Facebook pages Instagram pages and websites we work together to collabor and share ideas so we work with the School principles and staff they help us at the calendars what their goals are for each school what we're hoping um to get out of
the PTO that year what we can do to support them and like I said we have a president's council meeting where we come together to work together to see what we can do to help each School share ideas what we're doing at each building some people may have issues that they're having we can help resolve those as a community we have Community groups to get together we do packs of Plenty where we pack all the bags of foods that so children can take home for the weekends we help support the 220 foundation and then as most of you are aware we do the candidates Forum every time there is an election here so doing that again PTO have organized and funded many things in our community so our elementary schools we have our book fair
our reading programs our parent child social events so these are our dances our ice cream socials um we have running clubs which she's so greatly talked about in her opening um green clubs and service clubs that meet every month and those are run by chairs on the PTO the middle school has a snowflake and student social events they're actually going to um re event tomorrow at Prairie and then the all School reads programs at the high school they do the health the veteran parent panel um life after BHS senior celebrations and young hearts for life so doesn't matter what level your child is in that PTO is supporting at all levels PTO dollars have helped support staff grants we have water bottle refill stations many of playgrounds have been help been funded by pto's climbing
walls new gym floors and outdoor education areas um you might see a lot of these at elementary schools there's like outdoor Gardens and space there butterfli and things around the district um that have all been funded by the so we are volunteer Force providing manpower to help staff events and student programs so like I said before we have um a lot that we've helped contribute money to but we do a lot of volunteer hours as well so all of your room parents are volunteers all the classroom celebrations te staff appreciation we do uh a whole week for our staffs at every building where they provide little treats and things that are going on major events um during conferences the PTO helps provide dinner for all of the staff at every building um like I said
the running clubs and the green clubs uh we also help the Librarians with assistance throughout the day there's manyi courses and field day which we've been running you've seen a couple of those already happen we have more this week um those are all volunteers that are running all the stations for all of those events um and then the lunch L from recycling programs which we were actually very happy most of those are all back now a little while but we're happy to thr all back and I think what we're most proud of is that we are fundraising machines so collectively um recently we have collected over $400,000 um in donations and fundraising efforts that we have put on throughout all of our schools and all of that money is reinvested so we do talk to
our principles and their staff and what they need we've bought art supplies musical instruments um with help of smartboards many things that they specifically need at different schools and so we work with them to see why we can best use those dollars and lastly we just want to thank the barington community we want to thank the administration for all of your support um I'd like to thank the board we really enjoyed this past year having rotating board members hearing from everybody that was really nice um and we do get a lot of support from the local community I do see people that don't have children in the schools anymore who are still actively participating and helping our PTO and we love to see all of that excellent questions thank you for all you do indispensable
at each of the schools knowon against teachers and administrators but tto also help building running and um we actually feel very supported by the district dep princi so we're very lucky to have that well I just encourage everybody who's listening and paying attention go to a PTO meeting get involved it's really fun you'll make lots of friends and get involved in worthwhile things that'll help our students there's something for everybody too things that require minimal time things that require lots of time so there's something for everybody I remember people would always complain that they didn't know you go Mee you will know what is and that is why we had to create an online presence too because that's just easier for some people so we try to push everything out multiple ways well thank you
and take that back please to the president's Council thank you and really help shape the personality of each one of our schools so appreciate appreciate thank you having thank you [Applause] Excell all right so next we have our framework 220 yeah like to invite Dr Carpenter up um our staff and Administration has been hard at work this past year as we've started to implement uh just to remind the board there are 28 objectives that were identified in our strategic plan uh we started with a chunk of them this year and and Dr Carpenter is going to provide an update on the progress of our work all right are we cooking well good evening and yes thank you Dr winman for um buying me some time there I was I was trying to stretch for great
job so um I'll begin with a bit of an introduction before I get into the formal presentation so most if not all school districts have a strategic plan and really at a foundation level strategic plans are built on goals and actions and metrics um however our strategic plan I would argue is different um yes we have goals and we develop action steps for each of our objectives yes we have it structured in a very deliberate approach yes we have developed measures and metrics however I believe that our strategic plan framework 220 is more aspirational it's really building on our accomplishments the priorities the objectives they also seek to push past traditional approaches to education with a high emphasis on the student experience and challenging the status world so to level set the significant community feedback
and engagement led to six high value priorities and 28 nested objectives we realized very early on um that it would clearly be difficult to address all those objectives right away uh to that end we focused on nine Focus objectives that I will speak more about the material but before I go further I want to acknowledge the Deep level of Engagement of our priority leads and the associated leaders who have committed to this work it is through their leadership and guidance that we've been able to accomplish so much this year so looking at our timeline uh after the board adopted framework 220 and that was back almost a year ago back in June we initiated a framework 220 administrative Retreat that really set the tone for the year and that was in July we have weekly
touchbased meetings at executive Council um that offer our priority leads the opportunity to share progress and also get feedback on the objectives that are being initiated we've also had a series of work sessions with the impact group this year including a meeting just last week where we onboarded the 2425 in November of 2023 we launched uh the framework 220 public facing dashboard the dashboard is a way to demonstrate the progress of each objective being addressed each stage in the process has a timeline um and as each stage is completed it is populated with a narrative overview of see where we're at so for uh 2324 as I mentioned earlier we had nine Focus objectives in personalized learning it was early childhood and Canard opportunities and also flexible learning health and wellbeing social emotional learning and
stewardship fine Visual and perform art spaces community and Community Partnerships priority we focused on internal and external Communication in inclusive education our Focus there was on hiring practices and F we focused on authentic learning and career paths we followed a four-step uh process first developing Baseline information making recommendations developing an implementation plan and then developing measures to understand the impact be able to measure the impact as the work progressed this year each objective team also developed a series of key results which I will go through momentarily as well and these are specific action related to the implementation plan you will notice um as I as I move through the key results you'll notice that each one of them are also color coded we kind of like this color coding idea and so we carry that
over to the key results I'll go through those in a moment green is completed yellow is in progress and red is not started uh but even as um a phase is completed for each objective we will certainly have measures and we are in the process of developing those measures and we'll be able to monitor the impact which will allow for adjustments and modifications of so I I will I will overview the key results that's what you see excuse are you okay what we will um I will go through each of these objectives but um but first um I want to orientate you the actual slides that you're going to be seeing across the top you see key results and actions remember those are those are our key actions within each the implementation of the objective
right below it you'll see what priority it is and then also after the colon that's actually the name of the objective and then right below it is more of a definition of of that objective so exactly what are we going to what are we in that this first one is early childhood and kindergarten opportunities you've heard a lot about that um over the course of this year um and but you'll also notice that you'll see a lot of yellow there and that means again in progress again we have several of these key results that are in progress but soon they will be completed soon they will be at at the green level once we get past once we get imp so for our early childhood and kindergarten opportunities one of the things that we are
working on this year is creating a comprehensive Early Child best practice manual or report I should say that's based upon a comprehensive review ofev research so that's that's currently in progress um by August of 20 2024 we will Implement an all day every day um kindergarten option for 100% of our students very proud of that and then the final key result there is in coordination with the Early Childhood career program which you also heard a little bit about tonight we will Implement two full day lab programs classrooms at next um next priority and objective that I will review is flexible learning uh so this was really to research best practices and flexible learning formulate recommendations they to the use of time space pace and path at all levels from preschool to postgraduation transition as you
will as I go through each of these you will also understand that each of these objectives are they're needing there's a lot to them and as we step through looking at the Baseline and starting to develop recommendations and implementation plan you'll notice that um you know there's several key results that are in progress us um but they they take time they take time and we have allowed and certainly encouraged the objective team really take time to be able to do those so under flexible learning um what we've done thus far is is conduct a comprehensive review of our current programs what are we current what are we current research on relevant research articles and studies define flexible learning and this was a big piece with authentic learning or flexible learning what does it mean how
do we Define it how do we Define it in variant in 220 so that that was happy LIF by the team to devel a and then um as we move forward into next year the next key result is to produce a varit to 220 flexible learning recommendations so I've gone through the research Define what flexible learning is and then develop a flexible learning recommendation your I'll [Music] this is another objective that you've heard a lot about this year you actually hear more about it this evening so I will still all dring this this is embed social emotional learning standard instruction this really speaks to our work around adopting our new SEO character strong again you'll notice that we have some we have one green check there that was by March 24 and then we move
into what it impation so implementing the actual curriculum will be in Aug of next year so August rolls around that Che and also Implement Universal screener um so we've heard a lot about this one as well this was to create a plan for improving the high find Visual and Performing Arts facilities this was actually um and Dave helped me was this the first one to be completed no as a matter of fact this was I recall correctly well well ahead of any others so this one got an early check green check um but as you know and as we've we've spoken about several times um there was Dr Bay created a lot more work as a result so um so this this um this actual objective was completed but then the next phas of work
um our next one next two actually are in that are in Communications um so we have we've worked on external and internal Communications really similar approaches here was a a survey done for both external and internal communication uh to really understand our effectiveness of our current commun our communication platforms that we utilize how we're communicating what's working what's not working so we asked our our community about external Communications what we how do how do they receive communication what they want more of when it comes to communication and by May um already in May but we'll call it the end of May uh we will create a20 prac be able to share that learning and then internal Communications again we did a staff survey to assess the effectiveness of internal Communications and then we are developing
and implementing a comprehensive internal district office communication plan for sharing District PRI uh you're going to hear a little bit more about this one tonight this was another objective this was area of inclusive education and hiring practices um there there are a few other key results that aren't listed here but they will be discussed this evening but the focus here for this objective was to develop an onging process to recruit hire and retain a more divers staff student demographics develop Partnerships with colleges and know one of the things that I just want to highlight here and this happens with a lot of our objectives is that even within that objective there's there's really two things okay so it's really the focus on recruiting higher and retaining and then after the semicolon is a piece around
to grow your own so going back to this idea these are needy these are needy pieces and when you really stop conversations asking what are we expected to do with we really have some great conversations so one of the areas you see with the green check mark is we developed hiring committees at H schools that and that has been implemented already and so each of those build each of those members of the hiring committee have G through training vide conversations and it's really focused on before they move into inter intervie interam and then the other piece I would like to highlight is the creation of bip Community groups for the purpose of providing feedback and recommendation regarding um the final two I believe um are future Readiness auin learning and the focus here was to
create an expand authentic learning opportunities for all Learners to provide Innovative real world experiences to initi Career Readiness career exploration album solving exp um so by February of 24 2024 identify annual process to examine resources that we would need to support next next academic Year's authoring learning opportunities and then as this objective moves forward into next year is to create elements and then our final objective for this year is also in future Readiness ISS learning opportunities the big Focus here was to resarch this and so one of the one of the pieces is really to understand what is the market telling us about type of career Pathways that are uping that would be certainly our time to invest time and money in develop programs around them so we wanted to and then also as students
that's really stud research um by August of 24 also increase our a lot ofas of are Dr um and then as also as we move into next year um we are evaluating those exp OPP stud around to really EMB those emplo employability skills heard a little bit about tonight how together allow students the opportun to really explore different Pathways that's all right so that is a overview of the that's been done within nine Focus objectives this year so then we want to do more right we want to continue to look at the other objectives that W addressed this year and what would make sense in terms of additional objetives that come so moving into next year we we've identified an additional layer of objectives that made sense to to bring on board I think um
you know as we moved into as we started this year we really looked at Mission first year objectives and then that gave us as we through this process this year what would be some natural connections that we can make work we did year connected to the work that we could do next year OB I also say that when we look at the objectives and those objectives were written a couple years ago and we think through kind of where we are in education changes that have been made things that are more important to work on I guess everything's important but what would make sense to work on for next year these are the items these are the objectives that there are seven new objectives that bring forward next year in personalized learning a learner agency in
health and wellbeing grade level and program Transitions and also social media awareness and stewardship uh infrastructure and Facilities community and Community Partnerships for going to focus support strategic priorities inclusive education professional development future Readiness Global so what does this look like so this is what this this graphically illustrates the objectives that we worked on this year and how those objectives will actually be layered on top of each other so um for example at the very top future Readiness we did um focus on two objectives for this year that's authentic Lear Pathways you'll see that that moves into 2425 because each of our objectives they do have some work still to do next year not the least being that we will continue to measure the objectives as as next year so again I spoke earlier about
identifying measures so each of the objectives will be measured forward to understand what the impact is and also allow us the opport some will be so to fur to really to further emphasize this our our model that we utilize we look at we look at continuous improvement from AAL approach beginning first with the priority looking at the objective developing action steps developing key measures key results and then measur and we just go so really when we think about continuous Improvement objectives that we're working on it's it's really never done sorry it's it's really never done um we're always going to be looking at in measuring our impact of the OB and making modications so as we move forward even if we have all checks when we have all checks on each of these objectives we'll
still be in the process of meas last month of what does this look like in in real practice I chose one of our one of our objectives and that was our early childhood OPP see at stop at the top we start with priority which was personalized learning then our objective is reallying opportunities some the action steps that we did is we up analysis kindergarten enrollment the rest of it but that was really that first understand where we're at from a baseline perspective and then developing as an example results more that we have in place just as an example and then also developing me me um so as I as I conclude 220 Place very high value on being a district that lens permeates our well a few of our objectives are more focused on particular
levels so think kindergart opport most are focus on full educational it really has been a privilege and honor to support the execution of the framewor framework 220 I'm certainly excited for current so I I have to sayos to the administration in preparation for your went to the dashboard and dove in and clicked and I'm just very impressed with the detail that you guys have uh so you know thanking everybody I don't want to leave anybody else I'll just say you know the administration I thought the dish were just phenomenal and hopefully our the public Community is looking at it also really you know watch it and you know make sure you're meeting what you say you're going to be doing so I just want to mention that um is is there going to be another
uh administrative retreat kind of dig into this year's goals or what's the plan from here yes okay yeah if we're going to try to live up to empowering personal Excellence uh for every learner you heard tonight I mean that that that's an update of a Year's worth of work so yes we're going to have a retreat again this summer especially as we start to contemplate those next seven objective areas be thoughtful about how those fit or the ability to continue the work that we're doing and as Dr Carpenter one part that he mentioned during his presentation is I really want to thank our entire cabinet our executive councel team every week the Strategic plan is a standing item and we discuss progress obstacles necessary support in order to continue the work and that's why it
looks like it doesn't that because this is front and center you know some school districts they do this exercise you did it you check the box and it sits there we're we're living it and we're really really diving into so yes we'll Contin that same process so it stays front to Center for us and just follow on that we will also be doing we have a full week of administrative professional development begin June June and June part of our agenda that have administrator together will be Rie simar and also I'll also say that we did the we did the administrator retreat in July and there was a lot of work and so when I talk about sort of logic model that we utiliz that was really all new running us so we had our strategic
plan and then we we were trying to marry it with logic how do we make this and so so that there was some there was some was some R understand how that works I will tell you that last week as I mentioned we were onboarding our new objectives so we went through sort of a mini min retreat with new objetives that were coming on and it was much more I think know I think the priority leads and our other leaders in July of last year versus this year is that it just it was much more smooth because everyone had gone through the process here really understand verbiage Le that we utilize when we talk about continu Improvement so very proud of took some time I think of all you guys um we've had Parents reach
out to us about cellones and Technology use um and uh I know that on social media awareness is coming up as one of your objectives how are parents and students and community members able to get involved in this process yeah it's it's a it's an important topic for our community right um Sandra mentioned in in her um report that I shared some information about the district at that very Development Council um I mentioned several of the items that are contained in our strategic plan and the one that actually got clapping from the audience was cell phones and social media I think it is on it's on everybody's mind it also came up as one of the questions there were a few questions that were submitted um that evening that I um responded to and one
of them was you know not only social media awareness but just devices device use cell phones in general um and so as Dr carpent mentioned when we looked at okay of the 28 what should be next this is why that one came forward we know it's an important topic some of the work that we've done this past year we've been able to um kind of do inhouse right and through either our administrators or our teachers and staff when we were looking at um I'll point to Dr lewicki with theal curriculum right that was a whole District initiative we had individuals from all levels all um certification areas and so forth when we think about social media awareness we can't do this work in house this has to be a partnership and as I've been looking
at communities and school districts throughout the nation because many are talking about this topic I think the districts that I am seeing as successful and have some um positive momentum that's going on um they're the ones that actually do this in connection it's not the community or the district they're working together on this topic um where there's been some challenges when the district says let me tell you how your kids should use cell phones that doesn't resonate well in all communities right so this is an area much like we did with our past strategic plan some of that work of vision 2020 we were able to do in house some of it we knew when we were going to be talking about optimal time for Learning and we were going to be talking about sleep
patterns and and so forth of of children and Adolescence we tapped into our um community and we had doctors and so forth participate and we did I believe it's going to be very similar so while some of it has been in house Katie specifically this one this is where we're I think this is going to be a community conversation and we're not only going to do that with our parents but I also think we have a number of Community Partners like be strong and other entities that I've been networking with that also want to be part of this conversation because we're all doing the work and trying to get our arms around um our children on this topic very long answer but I do think this is going to be one that's going to be
front and center and it's going to be a very involved process to that yeah more to come also maybe just top think about if we do engage Community like like Community engagement referendum advisory comme you know a little bit our some recommendations yeah absolutely so like this summer The Retreat one of the topics that we're going to this is going to be one of the topics and start to think about what are some ways that we could structure conversations in the community how do we engage people and I think you know people have different time and ability to give right I think we should create a plan where if you just want to provide information or you want to come for one night or if you want to be able to commit to something greater
or an ongoing or be part of a committee so for so that's going to be one of the areas that we focus on during the retreat coming up with some models and then bring that back to the Board of Education I'm excited about the grade level in the program transitions this is a unit district we've got lots of opportunities and the PTO presidents and PTO have been interested in that parents are interested in that so that's really opportunity to to do a lot of lot of good get a lot of from the community and both of those because families do that that's always a top social media and you know the transitions like coming into kindergarten you know coming into Middle School coming into high school you know all those good things that we have
an opportunity that other districts that are two tier districts don't have that's people will be happy to to get involved yeah and I think it's it's like we're ready for 2.0 on that topic like I I'll give you an example like I remember when we were bringing sixth graders into middle school and when we thought about Transitions and we started Camp sixth grade it was like an immediate impact for our children right Camp sixth grade solved some of the things that we were seeing with the struggles like get them in let them get more comfortable let them try the locker not on day one when everyone's looking at you like let's do it in the summertime right like very practical things had an immediate impact but now when I think about transitions like we have
students not only in grade levels but we have students transitioning between programs within buildings right with some of the programs we buil like so that's where I start to think about what's transitions mean for us today and it may be different than some of the things that we've implemented in the past we can build upon some of of those successes for our students one I'd love to hear about is your vision on learner agency it sounds really interesting so I'm curious what the what are you guys think about that one I was actually thinking I was actually thinking love that ageny question to providing students with opportunity to see what they do with it iect learning and Blended learning I think's beautiful thing about our framework is I love what you have laid out here
and I the only comment I had was I think you guys are grading yourselves too hardly you know what I mean like like if you're not late on things do you need to be yellow I don't know it feels like you're green until you're a check mark I just you know I just leave that with you maybe you need more colors we have big celebrations when we get completion okay all [Laughter] right t-shirts I was actually and red sometimes I wish you could come to an ex Council because we literally debate these things like are we ready is it really green have we done it all is there more that can be done I just want my t-shirt up on our you know if you're not late I don't know number in fact we did
we did talk icons we landed I'm just curious how you prioritize the career Pathways because there's so many possibilities and there's so many things that we that we do in the high school that we're already doing like woodworking or welding or so many of these things that it's you know we can't do everything obviously because then know we wouldn't have enough staff classrooms starts with our students but I'll let Dr i e starts what our students are most interested in followed by what the labor market data is telling us what does this area in terms of geography what does that say in terms of what the needs are so for example one of the reasons so many students engaged in our agricultur food and natural resources pathway is because Northern Illinois is the food processing
capital of Northern America fun fact for today so the labor market data largely drives the career pathway endorsement areas that we're able to offer in our district and as we've mentioned many times and this is very important to our district and dran myself as well it is our goal to offer all seven of Illinois career pathway endorsement areas so the two that are outstanding are arts and communication as well as manufacturing engineering technology and trades so those two are on the thank you so when is our next so we want to see the green well so like this yeah right so like this year I think we did the retreat we put some plans together and then we came like around I think it was October October gave an update um if we're able to
do something sooner maybe in September but I'd like to kind of fall into cycle we we do an update in the fall and then the spring L tonight and just kind of at least those two you certainly heard updates throughout the year we we celebrated some successes like when we had conversations around kindergart right um I've embedded the spotlights into some of my superintendent reports along the way but I think at least formally twice a year the board finds that to be a good and we've used this word Retreat a lot you guys meet right here in the administrative offices sometimes and sometimes we go offsite otherwise people get pulled into all the daily work which I I really again I complimented the team earlier this has been a team effort um part of just
figuring out our process with a new set of meaty aspirational um types of goals and objectives for our school district um we have been able to maintain all of the services and administrative work that calls our attention every day but also introduce and really make as you've seen really good progress I'm very proud of the team being able to balance that um take on a whole new set of expectations that will move our district forward in addition to making sure all the stuff during the day gets done like they always thank you so much thank you all right next up is equity did I miss one student services sorry the wrong one highlighted maybe just you know stret yeah audience can stretch too hi good evening Jordan Anderson director of learner services and I are
excited to give you an update today on our student services department um as you are aware our department is doing some tremendous work throughout the district however for tonight's presentation our primary focus is going to be um implementation of character strong our new curriculum Resource as with all the department work departmental work across the district our Department's primary focus and vision is to empal Excellence learner um as Dr Carpenter just went through in terms of our strategic priorities um when looking at our strategic priorities in alignment with framework 220 our work in the student student services department hits all six however again for this evening we're going to be discussing um health and wellbeing priority more specifically um our social emotional learning objective and as you see on the screen I'll to you our objective
embedded social emotional learning standards into daily instruction and include the development and use of language ensure multi-tier systems of support mtss processes are in place to understand the need for balance between School home and life for all staff and students the original seal steering team Dr linkman talked a little bit about it earlier we had general education teachers special education teachers related Services Personnel administrators social workers syes counselors all on this team and as the curriculum as the curriculum resource of character strong was approved we have implementation teams were formed with early with our early childhood elementary middle and high school staff and as a reminder the steering team is engaging in the curriculum review cycle um and the purpose of the review process is to develop and provide a rigorous high quality curriculum and
it's cyclical um and we are now ending stage two and we are beginning stage three with the implementation process next so as we look forward to implementing the character strong resource in the fall just a few reminders about the resource itself so character strong focuses on the castle aligned competencies of self-awareness self-management social awareness relationship skills and responsible decision- making it does provide us with tier one tier two and tier three resources while being aligned to the American school counselor Association mindset and behavior standards it is research based it provides us a resource for prek through 12 plus on social emotional learning it is focused on the whole child and the lons vertically aligned that not only teach but also character as Dr lawii mentioned uh we have worked with implementation teams at the Early
Childhood Elementary Middle School and High School levels uh to work through how this will be embedded into the school day for our students uh for our elementary students and our Early Childhood Center um this will be approximately 50 minutes per week so during that 50 minutes per week it will break down of course to approximately 10 minutes per day and all of the lessons consist of five components so there is a start uh portion of the lesson which is just an introduction and discussion um that is LED and that's typically about five minutes long there is the connect portion of the lesson and the connect portion is the relationship building uh there are a lot of games that are involved there and that typically takes about 10 minutes of of the entire uh week the
is the core part of the lesson so grow is the life skills as I mentioned core and that's really the heart of the entire lesson which is expected to take about 25 minutes per week the respond portion of the lesson is the time um to learn about emotion regulation strategies which is approximately five minutes and then the exit the wrap up of the week is approximately five minutes and that's a time for reflection and application this is very flexible which is wonderful for staff students uh and families the grow as I mentioned is the core part of the lesson that's the part that is uh the piece that really has to be addressed every week and the other pieces are pieces that can be infused as it works into the sches looks very similar but
yet different at our middle schools and our High School uh so again each lesson is composed of those five different components but of course as students get older um they're maturing uh the language changes so these components now are welcome Community content character and closure um instead of 50 minutes per week at the middle school and high school levels students will spend approximately 30 minutes and it's not necessarily per week instead it's by session so our middle schools will be implementing 25 sessions next school year and our high school will be implementing 15 sessions throughout the school year and again those are 30 minutes in length uh the welcome part of the lesson is an entry that takes only about two minutes the community portion of the lesson gives students choice and ways to connect
with one another so very similar to the community building that they will be used to from elementary that's about three minutes long the content is the core part of the lesson which takes approximately 20 minutes character is a practical real life application for taking what they've learned and turning it into practice which is approximately three minutes and then again the closure uh portion of the lesson is just reflection questions or some typ of that takes approximately two minutes there will also be a strong family engagement component to character strong so there is a family strong website which will be shared with families there is an introductory family letter that will be going out in August that will explain character strong and talk through the components and pieces for every family in the district there are
family connection newsletters that will go home monthly that directly correlate and tie to what is happening in the schools and there are also character dare challenges uh the character dare challenges are a really exciting fun way to challenge families uh staff students to put something into practice that they've learned uh from going through the character strong program it could be something as simple as uh this week I dare all of you to hold the door open for someone or to do something that was talked about in class so those will be shared with families and then also completed uh within the schools just embedded into part of the school day all family Comm communication come directly from the schools some communication may come from principls some from classroom teachers um but there will be a
very strong family and Community component embedded within the program we have already done some significant professional development with all of our administ administrators we're very excited that we're going to have the kickoff for character strong on opening day with the entire staff um so um we are very much looking forward to next have your general staff gotten PD yet or not yet some have okay some have the administration but yeah some yes have but we will opening day will be the is when they're gonna can I just ask um with I can picture Elementary School real easy because with the same teacher where will it be in the middle school and high school will it be during English class will it be during PE when you know where will they be having these sessions if
you will so at the middle school level we're looking at um most likely implementing that during their cult time of course and at the high school we're still in the process of narrowing down how that is going to exactly roll out but it most likely will be a rotating type of schedule because it's s the school year where four of those days with our professional learning days half days we can Implement that into the schedule easily and it's the 11 other sessions that we're still we haven't narrowed down specifics in terms of how that's going to roll out but we're close unfortunately in the high school not all students take the same classes so you know you got to make sure you everybody yes yes and the entire staff will be trained um even district
office St will be an opening day so everyone will be able to to implement the curriculum and use the same language and focus on the same I'm very excited about the community involvment I think that's not the best part but that's a really strong strong yes and every time we go into the um character strong website you'll find we find something new I mean it is just unbelievable unbelievable in terms of how many resources professional development that the staff can do on their own time um my favorite thing is the character gym where you can go in and do different inclusion activities that you you can choose the level in terms of grade the how big your class is what you want you want to energize you want to connect you want get to know
you and there's also a section for educators so us on cabinet on on exac have been using those for inclusion activities and we start professional development with or even when we're leading team meetings and it's super easy to just go in and say you know I need need to energize this group what can I do to get them up and moving and it's right there and you can choose if you want materials no materials however many minutes you want I mean the resources are endless you should have done one with you now in retrospect I was just think have access sometimes you know in the middle a little come meeting let's do that let's do that um I was going to ask I was going to ask like I think you just answered it but
if we find we've got a specific issue somewhere there are resources that we could say Hey you know we'd like to address this issue at school X you know um yes so within that character strong gym that was just mentioned there is an entire Bank of resources completely outside of the tier one Core Curriculum so a principal a teacher uh could go in and say this is an issue that I'm having just within my classroom or maybe within a grade level or even within the school and can pull those resources and use those uh with the students there are also um assemblies for every single month uh that come up if the schools choose to use that as well and everything is aligned and as mentioned constantly being updated with new and exciting components so
that's all included as well and even in terms of that communication piece for principles they can go right in or use the the letters and everything is done so is there a character strong lead at each school or something or how you know resource that they can get day-to-day out with yeah so they um really already is because we have oural steering team and we have representation from every school so there has been for the last two years which has been very helpful after every meeting we've created a common message together so that the same message is going back to the schools from theing representative and so that will continue the team is really looking forward to moving into year three of this sounds like then there'll be consistant messaging and language throughout the district
about certain topics or certain you know situations or things about students that that would be so and we develop that common message as a team a steering team and that's responsibility of the team members to to take it back and say the exact same thing so it's getting out exactly the same acoss because sometimes I know it's inconsistent you know different age you know kid says a bad word what's their response or how busy is the teacher how distracted is the room or how end of the year is it right and topics have to be discussed so that's really nice to give a you know framework for for making it right there is consistency across all schools and the district but that also this program gives autonomy to teachers in terms of what they feel
they to focus on with their specific students I me theour are when does it go live yeah how do we get access oh you can have access right right now yes we'll make sure you have the login so there'll be H three separate logins so there's the Early Childhood Elementary login middle school and high school since the resources look different on each level um every school has a login um but once you're logged in as one Elementary School it's the same as the other so we'll make sure you can to every every single person we will give the login so if you want if they want to look at the high school or the middle or you you know in some of our specialized programs some of the high school material like for our students
at btp maybe to high level for them so those teachers can take a look at middle or Elementary lessons and and use those to work with with our specialized populations given the family engagement por of this will families have access so no so the family strong website is not full access to the entire curriculum but what it will provide is in conjunction with the family letters and the family connection newsletters will give families a preview of exactly what the lessons cover but it won't go into the minutia of every single piece of the lesson absolutely additionally I we had Kelly the infinitech award she's also with the communication board to the low Tech assistant technology for communication she's creating all the picture boards and things for our students in our stri invest programs who need
those to be able to communicate that relate exactly to is it available it's available in Spanish notes but it is available in Spanish yes and everything that is student facing so any videos or slide decks or anything with one click that teaches directly to Spanish and then the teacher can choose to either keep teacher facing side in English or Spanish I think you kind of said this but with the family engagement with the newsletter is there a component of like here's the lesson we're going through and then here's how you can for or an activity to pull it through at home like is there a nice activity that you guys Envision so it's like reinforcing what they're learning yes so the newsletters uh do tell exactly what the topic is for you know for that
particular length of time and then also provide questions dinner conversation topics things of that nature so that the students are bringing back home what they're learning very nice thank you thank you very much thank you so much and now we'll have our without further ado oh TR are we ready yes hey good evening thank you so much for having us here this evening to provide you with an equity and inclusive education update thank you to my colleagues Nate and Teresa joining and of St St Focus Group awesome so of course tonight's presentation is aligned to our mission statement of empowering personal excellence in every learner and while tonight's presentation is also aligned to all six of our strategic priorities we will specifically hone in on our progress with inclusive education and to provide you with
an overview of the direction of our presentation for this evening it's divided into two chunks but that first being grounded in our progress that we've made this year with our district Equity team as it relates to our student focus groups Community engagement as well as progress made within the revised Danielson framework and then we'll shift to providing you all with an update as it relates to inclusive education specifically related to two objective areas of professional development and hiring price so this year with our district team we were incredibly successful as a team and one of the factors that made it a success was the implementation of a rotation of our board members so this was a new shift this year and each meeting we had two different board members represented at the meeting at each
time and it was such a benefit to have each board member engaged in the learning and the conversation and another thing that brought us success as a team this year was the revisions that we our district Equity website and after each meeting we always update the website with an update as to what we accomplished at each meeting so as a reminder you can access that website by going to the sticky tab fund terminology and then clicking on District initiatives and then Equity 220 and then it'll take you to our district so as we slide into um our uh student belonging FOC group I did want to give another shout out thank you very much Mr turot for being here for your work and uh with our pilot as well as Ismail I know this is
your um as his father will be kind enough to join us on our district Equity team next year to provide the musim of American Experience we're happy to have them here for that work as well welcome um uh but student belonging group just really simply it's a pilot that's been going on for a couple years uh currently going on at Prairie and a at barington high school so it's currently sixth through nth grade our goal is to up that Annie every year at the high school so next year will include 10th grade the following year will be 11th grade and there I say the following year 12th grade so anywh who it's a uh you know our belonging group is currently made up of a diverse group of students that have uh exhibited leadership skills
and are looking to find their voice and supporting their schools as it relates to diversity equity and inclusion um uh a couple of the groups that Mr T turot worked with this year for example um had the opportunity to go to the elino Holocaust Museum that's the picture of Mr turkot and the students uh uh at work at the Holocaust Museum uh when they went to the Holocaust Museum what they didn't know that was that they were also going to be given a opportunity to excel here in the district so they were asked to create some sort of Action project uh that they would be able to get back to their school and this group of eighth graders uh decided that what they wanted to do was to support school's missions and provided a a
a uhal lesson to sixth grade students based upon their experiences in eth grade uh I wanted to give a quick shout out to those students if they might be listening uh that's Sam Buckner Leela uh Bren fergs Jordan Gordon Nas Assan Ismail Khan in the back there Jazzy Styer and Miriam ston these students worked really really hard uh at providing these lessons and um we had a little video clip we weren't able to get that to you in time for your board report promise to make sure that we'll include that in some of our reports going forward for next year but students did a great job and really wanted to to do that and again what's so what's so great about these students is again um as we talked about they'll be socially promoted and
going to high school next year and I look forward to working with them in the high school so uh the high school students will uh will have some some ninth graders coming in that are ready to work so that's really really cool and we look forward to getting them together next up is community engagement we spent a great deal of time this year brainstorming as a team ways that we can broaden the scope of our work throughout the community and build capacity throughout the district as a whole and thanks to the very generous support of the barington Educational Foundation we are happy to share that we will be launching a CommunityWide book study with breaking the code with Gabriella which is authored by of our students and hot off the press we'll do another Flyin
transition the students have recently published a copy in Spanish which they just arrived I think it was yesterday so we'll make sure to get copies of the Spanish version to everybody so we are happy to share that because of the support of the Education Foundation we were able to purchase 2500 copies of the book that will be distributed distributed to students and families and community members in the early fall and we will have copies that are available in both Spanish and English as well as digital copy so look for additional details in the early fall as it relates to how we are going to launch not only the CommunityWide book study but other ways we are going to engage the community in this again everyone knows I love about the revised Danielson framework and the
team members on the district Equity team have pointed the deeper dive with Danielson I don't know if they I might overuse that phrase so as a team this year we have built an understanding of the revised framework as it relates to each domain and the components within those domains to unpack each component as relates to the instructional shifts from the 2013 version to the 2022 version so you can see on the screen the work that we did last year with developing some common performance indicators align to the 2022 revised framework really helped guide our work as a district Equity team this year so as you can see for example 1B that shifted from demonstrating knowledge of students to knowing and valuing students so one of the activities that we would do as a team is
break up into two groups and really come up with with questions that folks have regarding the shifts in the components as well as what are the instructional shifts that teachers and Educators need to make in their practice and their educational spaces in order to implement this framework and as we shift to inclusive education this is a great way to segue into an update where we are at with our professional development OB area which in large part even though this isn't a priority objective until the 2425 school year we did do some important work this year as relates to developing large scale professional development grounded in the revised daniels's framework so that kicked off last school year and the summer of 2023 where we Nate facilitated three very large scale professional development opportunities for our staff
that continued throughout the school year through building level professional development District level professional development as well as engage our administrators in professional development not only as it relates to the framework itself but also how we are using the revised framework to impact high quality feedback that our educators are receiving as part of the evaluation process I'll give this one more I apologize unplug like just kick it okay now I'm going to send it back to Nate to give us an update on building Equity all right so this is our uh uh uh second year that we've officially completed our building Equity cohorts I'm happy to say that within the last two years we've had over 140 faculty members that have been part of the equity cohorts engaged in uh uh professional development focused on inclusion
and support of the revised daging framework uh we to do a deeper do a deeper dive in that space as well uh and Al also the development of Equitable practices that can be leveraged in classrooms and school buildings uh a culmination of those experience are Equity action projects uh those Equity action projects so that you are aware range from uh The Grove Avenue times which is a newspaper that focuses on diversity equity and inclusion uh staff surveys that determine the type of professional development teachers need to support the the revised Danielson framework in teaching in classrooms useful inclusive language hands outs uh student belonging groups cultural celebration calendars just to name a few um as we talked about a little bit about that Community engagement that we're thinking about in that book study I think
a great way for us to uh introduce some of the equity action projects to our community is with a gallery walk so we're hoping to create some sort of gallery walk where we can combine the you know the book study as as well as the opportunity for our district Equity team members to just share out and and point out to the community and show them the exact work that we're doing we think this a really good time and uh through our work and uh I know Barry and Katie you heard a little of that work this last this past week we're really really positioned to actually start talking about that work a little bit more and we look forward to doing that through a gall gallery walk next year add and with that some next
steps as a team as we are going to continue our work as it relates to community engagement and and do some deep planning this summer in the early fall in order to launch our gallery walk as well as our CommunityWide book study as ter Teresa mentioned continue our grow your own program development and now that we have successfully launched the career pathway endorsement in the area of human and public services specifically related to education we have a fantastic foundation that we can now build from and then last but certainly not least is continue our district Equity team planning for the school year and really think big and what do we want to do with that I'm excited about the the student groups I appreciate the work that's being done and I appreciate you being here
tonight and participating in being here at the end of a very long meeting we saved the best for last Almost um but yeah because that's you know it's about our students we want our students to have um a good experience and that's not always the case so um the more we can do to help our students and support our students in in groups and focus groups um with you know Educators who really care who are there to support them I I thank all of those those people as well some who are here and some who are not here and you guys work because it really makes a difference and and I've Heard lots of stories that were difficult and not good and we don't want to have those you want to have good experiences and
we want everyone to be ined and it's really really important important work do Sor I don't you stay this whole time do you have anything like do you want to share anything about you enjoyed from um focus sorry you got um it's been a great experience overall um so's been really helpful and so as director Rouse in kind of finding a place where if you have a problem kind of being able to find a solution like um we needed a prayer room for uh students to be able to and Mr turot was able to get us one fairly fast so been a great place to express thoughts and ideas of making our school a better community and an inclusive place for everyone and you're planning on continuing in high school then you'll continue on this
cohort yeah hopefully great I was thinking Mr mcams Stay [Laughter] just it's wonderful that's I I mean I also would to just comment on the Galler I'm excited to hear about them and participate if we can at times and oh and in the video you said you didn't have one prepar this time we'll take late on that abolutely like that be great you know one thing we have heard over the last many years when we've rolled out Equity is the community wanting to be more involved so I applaud the community engagement and you you know we we it's step by step by step and hopefully our community has been patient but you know the more we can involve them and really get them you know in understanding what we're doing and why we're doing it
can only be a positive thing so yes I think it's great I think that was a big step that you made it transparent what you were even talking about I think that was a really important point for it to be like the veil to be lifted like what's happening behind the scenes for them to see it's actually meaningful work that's not divisive and to bring us together and move things forward so I appla to you all for all that you've done this year over the past couple of years I think it's great especially the student groups I think that's really powerful and I hope to see that grow hopefully you can get my uh my little one back there Mr Trott before he graduates I'm trying I'm trying it's Community effort right Community effort are
there talk of parent cohorts too or family cohorts or anything else in the big picture of great ideas well that's part of our our visioning is you know we're a big step for us was the community engagement to build the capacity of not only our district but our our families and community members so as we take those next steps into Community engagement planning and as we launch different opportunities like our our book study and like the gallery walks that will give parents more of an opportunity to engage and also expanding the membership of our district Equity team to make sure that we inclusivity represented within our parent groups as well so those are all things that we are discussing as we our thank you than you so muches yeah so it gets more exciting we
are moving to policy switch my so we have what six or seven so I think we just go through one by one y you want to give us an intro no problem all right so we have six policies tonight um I'll go through each one of them a few are from press updates and a few are from our own District updates so the first one is policy 41 90 targeted School violence prevention and we talked about this at the last meeting under first read um but we wanted to bring it back and talk with the policy committee about what does volunteer what's the definition of volunteer and so with a little digging and uh some background we just um cross reference this policy which we added in there under six 250 community resource persons and
Volunteers in the cross reference that will bring us to the um policy that explains what a volunteer is so just just know since we didn't we don't have that policy here what what's the volunteer maybe we didn't I don't have it pulled up here all right so resource persons and volunteers may be used for non-teaching duties not requiring instructional judgment or evaluation of students for supervising study halls long teach reception areas used incident to instructional programs transmitted by elect Electronic media such as computer video and audio detention and disciplinaries and school sponsored extracurricular activities to assist with academic programs under a licensed teacher immediate supervision to assist in times of violence or other traumatic incidents with the district by by providing crisis intervention services to lessen the efforts of emotional trauma on staff students and
the community provided the volunteer meets of qualifications established by the Illinois School crisis assistant team steering committee as a guest lecturer or resource person under a licensed teacher Direction and with the administration approval or as supervisor cheron or sponsors for non-academic school activities all there okay so it's not if you're coming in to help with the with the Valentine's Day program correct correct correct right um I I think we should make it a little bit more clear that that's what we're talking about my input is that we footnote or something that word volunteer instead of having just assume that we' all know to look down cross cross reference well there's a difference between the word I think require and encourage true true is that's what I was worried about last is that were require so
if you're requiring these volunteers I just want to make sure it's very clear it's not any volunteer it's a specific definition and probably I'm gonna Channel Angel here and make that a capital V and Define it which which you have done but it's just not clear in me so perhaps rather than make a footnote you know make it more clear I mean there's a footnote here right on that word have a reference to it I don't mind going to the actual one but it's just not clear to me that volunteer is person I on the word itself make sure it's clear there is a def makes yeah okay the next one 430 revenue and Investments and I might need some help from my experts here um but this is being brought to from the finance
committee to go back to the original press policy um prior the committee requested changes that were different than the Press plus and it you know it put changes in that kind of limited us on our capabilities of investment with going back to the Press um policy and what press has done it opens up a little bit more of opportunities for invest from C and just to be clear there's still really strong guard rails in yep in established question so this takes us in alignment with press correct prior we were much stricter than press comments 710 equal education opportunities legal references were updated cross references were updated and footnotes were updated and then it was also updated in the response to requiring a board to adopt a policy that prohibits discrimination and harassment based on race
race color and national origin as well as retaliation so that's adding the new board policy that we adopted questions move a second next one s20 harassment of students prohibited this is legal reference cross reference and footnotes as well the response that prohibits bullying so the protected categories of the prohibit prohibition of bullying I get it is after n and then updated the response to the title change of 2265 Title Nine grievance procedures and then requiring a board to adopt a policy that prohibits discrimination and harassment based on race color and national origin as well as retaliation are we okay to Mo to Second reading 740 this is a policy that the committee reviewed and we brought it um through press a few a few years ago but then looking at it again when we uh
reviewed it we noticed that it had he or she in it and so we brought this up as a conversation of the policy committee to make sure that it was updated to the procedures and process that we use in our district and when we did look at it we noticed that we wanted to correct um what we are moving forward with when we're looking at policy and have the correct um edits in there so getting out here or she and adding it with students in they so that's the only update we just wanted to make sure we were in alignment with the policy and procedures that we currently have home school students I was just reading another policy think it says here she two two 220 also has here she I it's the one on
Board of Education meeting procedures which I read through thoroughly today so good to as they come at students awesome okay to move uh 740 yes okay 7180 prevention of and response to bullying intimidation and harassment so with these the footnotes were updated but then it was updated in response to the protected categor that prohibit bullying bases are also reordered to align with order they listed within the Illinois State Board of Education model model bullying polic and then it also requires this to collect non identif identifiable data regarding verified allegations of bullying within the district and submitted in anual report no later August 15 of each year beginning with the 2425 school year through the 2030 31 school year we also need to add requiring notification within 24 hours to the parents or guardians of students
involved in sounds like we're good to I will work more dep in with that volunteer just make sure it's very clear it's that so so I was even thinking when I first read I was like is that us is this time all right well thank you Bor excellent so our last agenda item then is agenda items for June 4th um we have second reading of board policy we just looked at um we have our referendum phase three update from not just hearing from y but also from our yeah I think those will be two separate discussion items that's what I thought most Dr Carpenter also have a discussion that kind of Step through what kind of our next steps our next steps yeah all those colors you know green yellow red and then stickers and
cookies well we've got work to do board this summer right we all know that yes Us's question there been quite a few emails from middle scho I knowy haven't yeah so you know I wanna I want to compliment Jordan Anderson and team they were here previously they provided an update on you know our extended programming the that was done I think they've done an excellent job of sharing information with the board sharing information with parents hosting inperson and zoom meetings right and so they've really done a nice job of kind of rolling it out based on that now we're starting to hear some additional perspective and feedback from parents um I've met with them uh today we had a conversation about listening to the perspective seeing if there's opportunities for us to review and come
up with any additional adjustments based on that additional perspective but as I shared with the board today every day there are more activities and items going on that we are managing and so if everyone could give a little bit of Grace for us to close out this school year and then be able to really look at that and do um a nice job reflecting and then coming up with a plan and we will get communication back out to all those families just like we did when we daily up more more to come soon thank you yeah absolutely but we will use the feedback and we will reflect on that and then come up with some next steps course else I neglected to say in my report I wanted just remind everybody about the pr activities
graduation cery it's really a unique thing that we do in our district and I would encourage to attend you can witness the great Fine Arts performances so dress code for the board is I would I wouldn't super professional um I would say it's not our night our out so my advice to everyone is to blend in you probably don't want to wear red because there's going be a lot of photographs good helpful thank you just another Prelude um you'll hear quite a difference in the acoustical technology over at Willow Creek compared to hearing them in high school it's like they're different people they sound so amazing so my takeaways tonight uh logins for character strong for the board um I also made a note um but I don't like to over promise and underd deliver
but perhaps we could share an example of those parent newsletters in my weekly board so you kind of see a little bit what that's going to look like in the fall when we start rolling it out um you asked for it I'm going to look for an Energizer activity for our board retreat so that we actually can start to use those lessons and activities as well so you can experience it firsthand um and then the video okay do we have a motion to adjourn I'll in favor I any opposition hearing none we are adjourned
