005the best in the state of illinois we have built a team of academic athletes who strive to do their best while remaining humble and being thankful for the intellectual gifts that they have been given i knew halfway through the 21 22 season that prairie campus had a special team our two young lady members began an online group for all the female scholastic bowl athletes they met and they played against throughout the season they forged friendships that they will continue to have as they join their respective high school scholastic bowl teams our captain colin starnes he led the team brilliantly i cannot say that enough the strategies he used he was amazing prairie campus classical team continued to grow throughout the year they strategized they looked at the strengths and weaknesses of the teams and they
006knew exactly how to play they knew when they had to shut a team down when they couldn't allow them time to look at questions together they knew how to play and they did a great job our season record was 24 and two along the way at the regional level we had our best and toughest competition it was barrington middle school station campus okay the only two losses of the year were to station campus now we had two wins against them also and we are the state champions so just saying okay after winning regionals we moved on to sectionals and then we continued to the state tournament our postseason record 12 and zero at state we were placed in the toughest pool which included springfield franklin and daniel wright junior high two schools that walk away
007with a lot of state trophies we won both matches and then we played champagne edison for our state championship all of the players that are here tonight and the ones that are away from us all played during the state championship matches they made our school district very proud very proud we won the state championship with a score of 315 to 135. i am so so proud of this wonderful academic athletes and that's what they are they practice as hard as our sports teams they are illinois's top scholastic bowl double-a team with more than 400 schools competing they are number one so since this is the last time i'm going to get to see some of you guys because some of them are off to high schools like the illinois math and science academy i just
008want to say you made this year very special and thank you [Applause] can i ask the team to maybe go stand over here we're going to do a couple recognitions and then we're going to bring the board out for pictures so we don't have to bring the board over the table one time tonight i i would like to just congratulate you on an amazing performance i'll call mr offs and ask him what's going on with the team over there [Laughter] just to help out with that little uh rivalry it's just an amazing display of not only uh academic you know aptitude but commitment hard work and dedication not only by the students but you as well thank you for the time and energy and parents you know it takes a commitment any extracurricular activity uh

012um graduation occurred last weekend and it was a great success um our fantastic prelude the efficiency and calling each name and excellent speeches were all mentioned to me as as continued great attributes as our of our graduation this is one of my favorite nights of the year i wasn't able to make it this year because of a family wedding um so thank you to board members for representing and to you dr hunt and to mr williams for the continued excellence in that area another good night for barrington high school graduation we also completed our coffee and conversations so thanks to the board member the community and staff for participation and we're going to hear more about that in our discussion later this evening i still have no ideas or concepts for the isab resolutions which
013will be due june 22nd so if anybody has anything we would have to really get on the ball now so board members if you've got something please get them to me and also with respect to that triple a conference in november please get to janine um if you're planning to attend so we can get your reservations in next um on august 16th is our august board meeting and it does look like we can have an isb rep there um in the afternoon we would start at 1 or 1 30 to do our board our annual board workshop to do our board reflections so let us know if that doesn't work for you what time uh let's just say we start at one on august 16th um and then we would have um a bit of
014a break probably between our between our meetings we could have a dinner break so let us know if that doesn't work for you if it would help to have lunch brought in let me know if you guys heard that let us know if you need lunch brought in as well um and then also um dr hunt sent out in his um report on may 26th um please get us your thoughts on the board and community community engagement options um and then last um it would be remiss if i didn't recognize the tragedies that occurred in texas since we were last together please community know that the safety and security of 220 students and staff is at the highest priority for this board and thank you again to the community for passing the referendum which will
015address the physical safety and security at each of our school buildings the tragedy also gives us time to remind us of the importance of the social emotional learning and providing school connections for every student so with that we will move into public comment um we value your thoughts and opinions in accordance with board policy 2 230 we ask that you state your name elementary attendance area in relationship to the district before beginning your comments um we will have a timer i think that will limit us to 2-3 minutes because we've got less than 20 speakers we've got the countdown timer on the screen we will ensure that all voices are respected and heard in accordance with our board equity statement where we recognize embrace and defend all identities abilities and voices of our diverse school
016community for our board policy we expect mutual respect civility and orderly conduct among all people we are committed to addressing issues and not attacking people and we ask the community to do as this likewise if someone else has represented your views please feel free to stand and show your support there's no need to repeat their comments we ask that these actions do not delay or impede the public comment or the work of the board and as a reminder to the public public comment is not a conversation and does not necessarily reflect the views of the board if any comments require further attention we will ask dr hunt to follow up and report back to the board so with that um aaron shuckman hello my name is erin shuckman i have three kids in the district
01717 14 and 11 years old i would like to address the honors class discussion from the last board meeting so basically we have had a regular track an honors track and an ap track and when you take away the honors track you are removing essentially the student in the middle and you're creating more of a divide the term equitable is used frequently but when you remove the middle learner i don't understand how that is equitable a student in the regular track will very rarely be able to make the huge leap to ap and so they're going to be stuck in the regular track for the rest of their high school career i heard you say at the last board meeting that if a student is in the honors then they most likely can do ap
018but that is not always true some kids are truly at their max in the honors class and an ap track would not be an appropriate fit consequently some high level students that could do all ap classes but that is so so so stressful i've seen it and i actually overheard some of the families that were here being recognized tonight that they were upset and i didn't start the conversation but i heard them talking about it and i said oh my gosh and they were really really upset because it's going to be so stressful but those students that you saw tonight will have no other option none they will have to take those ap classes they will not be able to balance their schedule and have some honors in some ap for those classes that were
019removed at the last board meeting you also said that honors in ap are the same curriculum but that is not true ap moves much faster and covers way more content i have heard a reason for these actions may be that other districts are doing it and if so should we lower our standards just because other districts are doing it principal mcwilliams at the last board meeting stated that the physics honors class was only a test study the goal was to get more students into the ap track it was a test study for the last five years two of those which were coveted so i really don't think that they should be used as a metric however he said that the test study failed it didn't propel enough students into ap so right there we have
020proved the point that not every student who can who does honors can do ap honors is important the teachers don't want this i've talked to them the teacher the kids don't want this i've talked to them i've heard them crying the parents don't want this yet yet it's happening if it's if this is happening is it a money issue is it a staffing issue if you take away honors you can save a lot of money on staff and if this is the case shouldn't this be transparent and something that the board should vote on who's making these decisions changes that are not in the best interest of the students and if it's a money thing then let's call a spade a spade let's do some cutting in other areas but let's not take away opportunities
021for students to learn let's not create a bigger learning divide give students back these opportunities the classes are important they make a difference the teachers know it the kids know it and it's going to hurt the kids so please please please let's bring them back thank you aaron joshua robo [Applause] good afternoon um i have three kids in the district that i homeschooled last year so far i did hit the submit register button today and just have few concerns so pretty much nothing planned as far as um as far as shirt locker rooms coeds is this something that you guys are planning to introduce because this would be very inappropriate and my kids are afraid of that one it's social media kids take videos so i mean if this is something you will be considering
022think of social media and how fast videos spread and how you know the effect of that video getting out somewhere and have critical consequences as far as the kit that got exposed and you know videotaped changing or etc um another question is district 220 a gender affirming school district or are we heading into that direction because this is another dangerous zone that we are entering as far as grades another question are we planning to keep grades great kids based on performance and not skin color as you know some districts are planning to introduce and i think that would be it so these are just few things that were bothering me before the kids do return to school next year and hopefully they will thank you mitch hopkins uh hello thank you for allowing me to
023speak briefly tonight my name is mitch hopkins and i work with state representative martin mclaughlin your current representative of the 52nd district i'm here tonight as a civil servant not in a political capacity to provide information to you on specific services provided by our legislative office located at 2862 west northwest highway barrington just west of kelsey roadhouse the representative regrets being unable to attend tonight's meeting we have been visiting local municipal county board meetings over the past few months my goal tonight is to make you aware of the services available to your constituents our office acts as a liaison between constituents and all state agencies including ides void concealed carry licenses secretary of state issues veterans benefits and senior citizen resources our office also holds an annual prescription drug drop-off event representative martin mclaughlin is
024interested in knowing any current issues or topics you might want to address in springfield including any local projects which might require state funding assistance these issues can be forwarded to mclaughlin at islehousegop.org and if possible they may be addressed in committee hearings or during the fall veto session the representative also asked me to reinforce his full support of your elective board's local authority which should have priority over state agencies which are 212 miles away or federal agencies over a thousand miles away he also asked me to give a brief summary update on the recent legislative session budget the state passed a budget that increased spending in part due to significant federal arpa dollars and higher tax revenues from dramatic increases in inflation mandates unfortunately emergency executive orders are still being issued monthly from the governor's
025office however the courts have determined in many instances that local authority can be asserted public safety regarding public safety during the last session there are a number of significant structural changes voted in which will take effect in january of 2023 these changes may negatively impact our communities as similar new laws in chicago did particularly the institution of cashless bail inflation regarding inflation representative mclaughlin is strongly advocating for opening regional and national energy production to drive down the cost of energy and lessen the burden on working families tax relief on a positive note representative mclaughlin proposed and passed hb 4772 which will lower costs for counties with construction and engineering fees this should have a positive impact on the county's portion of our property tax bills representative mclaughlin myself and our staff are honored to serve
026please reach out to us at mclaughlin at isle ilhousegop.org or phone number at 224-634-8300 thank you for your attention and consideration thank you on the sheet we can pull you to the top of the list and have you speak first i'm sure mr mclaughlin would want to know that that we are supportive of that um ann wardway thank you for having me my name's ann ordway and also thank you for recommending that we watch the equity presentation from the may 17 2022 school board meeting which starts around the two-hour mark in the meeting many of us have watched it on youtube and are looking for some clarity from the board on equity efforts with students one of the equity presenters on may 17th spoke about a staff book study they had done at grove street
027school they said it led to work they are doing with students the book she referred to is called being the change by sarah ahmed here it is she said they used this book to help students share their name stories create identity wheels and to create i am statements she said that the i am statements are part of affirming students identities and helping them create their own identities and establishing who they are as a person here are some questions in regard to what you said is district 220 policy to affirm identities or is this something you are thinking about introducing and this was just a test done with a few students is this district is the district affirming all identities and a child is and if a child decides they are an object or an animal
028say a cat or a car will that identity be affirmed and what does that look like in the classroom would identity affirmation also include gender affirmation the equity speaker said they are working with second and fourth grade students if the student was born a girl and decides in class to identify as a boy does district 220 affirm their new gender and would a girl or boy who says she wants to be a boy or a girl be affirmed without parental knowledge clarity from the board on identity and gender affirmation is important to parents and to the barrington community as a whole my hope is that these questions can be easily answered by you the board thank you heather ewald heather [Applause] hi i'm heather ewald north barrington and countryside i have participated in the framework
029workshop coffees and many other d220 related zooms from my perspective as a conservative i have found that my voice and my values are often not heard not respected and certainly not represented in d220 planning in d220 culture or curriculum d220 does not teach creation theory d220 does not have an abstinence-only curriculum d220 does not teach marriages between a man and a woman public schools must not force a way of life or a belief system on their students they must try to be objective and non-biased to focus on what schools are created to do teach our children math science reading writing the core subjects likewise i ask you not to incorporate liberal bias in our curriculum and our mission statements i ask that you try to see the perspective of a conservative using polarizing and political
030words such as equity or inclusion in our mission statements and our curriculum is offensive and not inclusive to me and my beliefs inclusion through incorporating lgbtq plus and sexual content throughout our curriculum is offensive to me my child was shown a movie by a teacher that taught him lesbian sex so don't tell me this is not happening in d220 i have lgbtq plus friends and family who i love dearly they respect my beliefs but don't want them taught to their children as i understand as they understand i don't want theirs pushed on my children concerning equity you may not know this but if you are liberal but most conservatives feel equity is where it is the word equity is synonymous with socialism and communism having equal outcomes cannot possibly happen without lowering the bar for
031some and or not accommodating others this can be seen in school districts that have adopted similarly worded mission statements where they have gradually laid it labeled gifted curriculum truancy and grading systems as inequitable and racist we need to allow all students to achieve their own personal greatest potential with the same standards regardless of skin color belief system or political leaning d220 needs to stop interjecting liberal bias throughout core subjects we already lost around 500 families many of them i know personally who left because of the far liberal bias in d220 if you can continue down this political liberal path you will lose more conservative families and you will create a liberal non-diverse echo chamber maybe that's your goal a kind of 1984 like district where diversity of thought is not allowed where being born white
032or yellow is shamed where only a certain type of chosen diversity is celebrated i ask you today to allow a safe place for conservative families for those of us who believe every child regardless of the color of their skin their beliefs or economic level should be given the opportunity to rise above and fulfill their potential if they so choose thank you cassie olson cassidy marsha mccleary i have five kids in d220 and we've been in countryside station and bm our bhs schools um i combined d220 and the excellent graduation ceremonies and the joy and the children we've seen in students the last season and i appreciate that very much a few quick comments i attended strat plan coffee and look forward to changes being incorporated really appreciate you guys having those sessions i know it's
033a lot of work to engage in that way um at our session many commented on the difficulty in defining the word equity um equity of opportunity is wonderful equity of outcome is not a realistic goal as inevitably the results in relaxing rigor changing grading policies and removing classes potentially in order to equalize outcomes exactly is not achievable and not something that would be best for the vast majority of our students i think we can agree on that um so the definition of the word equity is difficult so in our session our feedback was that we should look to explain what we're trying to accomplish and probably stay away from that word that's very politically charged obviously even in this room today actually in our summits talked about requesting leadership planning and student accountability to be
034stated clearly in the strategic priorities and profiles whether that student is an entrepreneur mechanic member of the military or goes off to college they should leave d20 having received top-tier robust education and that should be clearly stated in our mission statement that's why families move to barrington and they pay all the money to live here and sacrifice so much for their families for the robust education so that needs to be there many also commented the movements towards a higher concentration of grading on a few tests versus progress along the way in many classes parents feel this is causing students to skip assignments ditch class space out missed projects and in turn struggle on important tests at the last minute demand to retake but um and are allowed sometimes but this is not a good habit
035that we've created here for k-8 grades i especially feel and some folks commented at the coffees to a more progress-based assignments and grading system for our younger learners to learn along the way and learn through experiences visual learning and the other ways not just to be studying written words at the end of the semester for a test um so that's something that i think has come out in some of the coffees that might not be at the strategy level but it's something that we should consider um and then a few other things many parents have also been talking about how the fifth graders were put together by biological gender for sexual education discussion and even though my children were not affected by this i feel it's very strange i was told there was a presentation
036by someone from blurries i'd like to see that presentation and what caused this because it does seem to be that a lot of people are talking about in the community and it stressed out a lot of children and parents that didn't maybe know about the opt-out process and ahead and you know quite frankly i i think the majority of families would be more comfortable with kids experiencing sexual topics at that age with the genders not being together in the same room thank you [Applause] okay that concludes our public comment as well i called your name three times i won't be long my name is cassie olson i am a parent at roslyn um i also have a student going into sixth grade at prairie next year as a product of 220 firm k through 12
037and a lifelong barrington resident i was excited to put my children through the same district that i attended based on what i've observed the strategic planning i did take part in the two-day summit i'm concerned the district priorities are shifting away from what they should be focused on first and foremost we should be providing our children with a high level rigorous education i do not believe this can just be assumed without being articulated as a goal i do see a lot of soft targets that are kind of hard to define of measure of success in so i just don't want us to get away from like we said barrington's a 220 district for a high level education i think that needs to be articulated and spelt out thank you very much for your time thank
038you all right so that concludes our public comments thank you for identifying yourself um so next up is dr hunt your report um but you know what i guess one two things to follow up on um aaron scheckman the first speaker talked a lot about the honors classes and i can we like schedule some time with her and mr williams i know he's not here tonight but i don't think some of the things that were said were accurate to what was said at our last meeting get that corrected i can do that and also for the board i think one of the uh requests was to kind of take a look back on courses we're working on that you should have that by i would think the 21st at the latest so that is being
039created for you and maybe get go show the answers to her questions sure yeah um and i would just address a couple other some some of the comments had a laundry list of questions so if you want to forward those over to me i'd be happy to to respond um appreciate that uh and i think uh jumping into um the honors discussion i will get you more information and follow up with the board directly as we had that conversation at the last meeting as well so uh jumping into my report yeah i think it's great that we're going to address aaron's request as well as um gauche's but i do think there's a lot more here um and i don't know for the position where we want to start taking a position on some of
040these or if we want to promise a date on a forward basis to talk through some of these issues but i know aaron ordway put up some good questions i think there's so can we talk about that during our during our um our new our next agenda topics or something because public comment is not a discussion right i understand i guess what i want to do is you know since folks are in the room if there's anything that we can instantly say to address some of these i think that would be great but otherwise you know there's a lot of questions here yeah i guess that we need that's where i'm at so if you forward them i'll get those answers if the board would like those answers as well i can i can certainly
041provide those i would love to see a lot of these answers yeah and yeah um i want to jump into my report uh this evening obviously this is a busy time of the year in the hr department as we um look to staff up for next year uh tonight on the agenda there'll be two recommendations for employment that we want to bring to your attention uh first is ann cignar and will be is is being recommended as director of student services for elementary um and we'll work with uh dr whiskey as well ann comes with a bachelor of science in special education from illinois state university endorsement from aurora university masters of education as well she's worked in district 15 for quite some time we're very excited about her experience and i would just say
042her student-centeredness really came through and her true commitment to helping appreciating the needs of children in my opportunity to talk to her so although not official yet you'll be recommended here in a few minutes why don't you stand up and i would just like to say hello to anne thank you for being here tonight [Applause] and also in the back we have stephanie spiwak stephanie is being recommended as an assistant principal barrington high school specifically to the coordinator of secondary counseling this is a position that was kind of realigned in terms of a recent retirement by jill faraday as we look at counseling from a a high school perspective we really understand the importance of the continuity between our middle school and high school so we're excited about her work as she looks at kind
043of the continuum services from the counseling department and especially as we kind of reopen these student services areas in the high school with a referendum she's going to be key in in leading some of that work so please join me in welcoming and thank you for being here stephanie [Applause] i just wanted to talk a little bit about the year in review i had the opportunity yesterday to have our final meeting with our district leadership team and uh you know it's an opportunity as we get towards the end of the year to reflect upon uh all the work that was accomplished during the year and obviously this continued to be a challenging year as we opened under the you know the continuation of covet 19 on the pandemic and i think some of that overshadowed
044a lot of the work that's going on in the district so i just wanted to hit some highlights for the board of education as we we think about and reflect upon this school year from a finance perspective perspective we plan on ending the year with a surplus an ongoing product of the pandemic we understand the budget to be a little tighter as we talked about in the committee the whole next year and we've done what is necessary to bring that in line we did issue dr biden led the initiative to issue the final 22 million dollars in referendum bonds which leads to the amount of construction and work that's going on throughout the district we've got three schools grove barrington middle school bearing and prairie as well where uh additions are moving forward on time
045and we look to open those additions for our students coming into the new year design work for five additional schools as you know because we bust you all over the uh all over the uh district to open up and kind of formally break ground on barrington high school countryside huff rosalind road and sunny hill so we're very very excited about the referendum work i want to take the opportunity to thank and recognize the community for their support as we transform space throughout the district and moving forward also hopefully this evening uh we're recommending that the board approve the ratification of a contract with uh bseo or classified staff uh we just appreciate all of their efforts and their work and their dedication uh our our students i i always talk about every role in our
046school district uh has an impact on the student experience and these individuals are critically important uh to all that they do all that we are able to offer kids from a climate and culture as well as relationship building perspective so more on that later but that's a just a major accomplishment obviously with kovid and and you see this you know nationally staffing is tough and again i look over to hr and you know on any given day there were calls and scrambling to get subs in place and i just commend their efforts and and thank our teaching staff that often had to step up and work through planning periods or lunch times to make sure that we were covered throughout the district and you know people don't realize that you know we we opened for
047school but some days it was you know on a band-aid uh as we went through so just commend that all involved for for their efforts in you know throughout the year um from from an operations stan standpoint uh we we did uh complete the training diversity equity uh training with the entire district leadership team uh the board will receive kind of an articulation of the goal and how that will go down to the building levels with outcomes kind of coming into next year highlights include receiving the competency-based education waiver so we could launch into better understanding that work and what it could look like or mean here in barrington 220. that advisory team served a variety of capacities in terms of not only research and trying to understand competency-based education but they also helped vet
048a lot of the work that you're going to review later tonight with the learner profile and strategic priority so we appreciate all of those involved in that and that work led by dr byrne also really renewed our e-learning plan and you had the opportunity to recognize 45 of our teachers that were the first group of teachers to go through micro credentialing which is quite a quite an accomplishment as well i am not allowed to give you iar data uh at this time but i can tell you a preliminary look we we feel very good about the results and we will certainly report out when that that data is finalized from a technology standpoint obviously going through the pandemic the the success and what the district was able to offer was really due to the hard
049work and dedication of the one to world program having devices accessible in the hands of students and we spent a lot of time this spring trying to understand the big takeaways and what we learned about education from covid and how to better leverage that going forward i think that's going to inform the next steps of our school district and how we integrate technology into the district we did have the opportunity to have an executive uh briefing down in chicago with apple and talk about kind of the future of education which really spurred some uh some of our thinking as well and you all saw a very thorough device study where we took a look at what was the best device uh to offer to our students uh and and reaffirmed with moving forward with the
050lease so uh we're in the process now of swapping out what's the number matt ten thousand nine thousand thousand six hundred approximately nine thousand six hundred ipads um i had the pleasure of having my superintendent of the day uh go to the secret place where all those were stored and showed them to her but it's quite uh you know you take for granted i i certainly do when the ipad just shows up at my house and my daughter is all set up but it takes a tremendous amount of work and effort from a lot of people so those are just a couple of the highlights and i wanted to take a step back as we reflect upon the year um to recognize that uh the work is certainly been meaningful and it has led us
051to this conversation about our future which tonight we'll talk through and get some board feedback on framework 220 in terms of our strategic plan and where we go next and we've and you'll see in that we've engaged tremendous amount of our our community heard very good feedback and we've continued to incorporate that as you'll see the latest iteration that tonight we look forward to hearing from the board as well so the last uh last congratulations for the year um i will tell you it has been a long time since i've gotten to a microphone and i felt queasy but when you go to willow creek and you stand in front of our graduating class it is a pretty impressive place to be and this class just was an exceptional class and if you i had
052an opportunity to talk to them earlier in the day before my formal speech and if you think about the experience that they went through while in high school the things that they had to endure we've heard in in in our learner profile about perseverance and and they're like the definition of perseverance so i just want to again congratulate the class of 2022. um it certainly is a special class and made left quite a set up quite a hard high bar for those uh that will follow in in our school district and then lastly i would just like to thank the school board uh it's i don't think anyone uh fully understands uh what this role and responsibility takes when you when you decide to head down this path and your ability to support our team
053and work through the issues that we face not only locally but nationally with education is certainly appreciated and i hope you all get to take a step back and and reflect upon the success uh that we have had as we continue to improve the educational experience for kids so thank you [Applause] okay and that concludes my report excellent so next up is informational reports any questions or comments on hearing none how about board committee reports finance met today go ahead barry i have two reports um one is the referendum committee to echo on what uh dr hunter said um i want to alert families that are north barrington rose lines in the early learning center that we are now in the design phase and over the course of the summer and early fall we're going
054to be involving you in you know what our next steps are going to be so those are the schools that haven't had any work done through the referendum so now we have eight out of the eight out of the other 12 buildings that are going to have lots of work happening this summer so construction summer 22 this is the big one at the middle schools we're going to be tying into existing buildings finishing the finishes so to speak site work and getting ready to welcome students to the new new additions by next week the grove mobile should be gone so that's very exciting they're still working on it but we're we're getting there and of course grove will then have four additional classrooms also at the high school we're doing a multi-purpose field and the
055tennis courts so we're doing external work uh getting ready for the big work probably uh through um next spring and summer where the big stuff is going to be happening and keep your ears and eyes open because we'll be having ribbon cuttings at all of the construction the buildings that will be done by the um beginning of the school this next school year we'll be having ribbon cuttings in in august so and again echo what dr hunt said we still have four more projects to to price out but right now we are on budget and on time so we're very excited about that and we're hoping that these last four um projects will come in exactly where we want them to be and we can deliver to our community what we promise them so that's
056a referendum can i add late breaking news for you yes there is a gravel operator strike that affects all of the quarries in illinois that has a potential impact on some of our field work this just is late breaking as of today so that may have some impact it also may affect the prairie parking lot which is not referendum construction but uh so more to come but just want to give the board a heads up on something that sadly was a little less exciting so let's hope for a settlement goes like that sorry okay thank you i'm sorry microphone no thank you seriously thank you davey downer again today you know it's good to let us know these things as well as we hear about them so we know when community knows that we're doing
057the best we can on our end so and then we have facilities committee um so let's start with the kind of what dr hunt presented um when we talked about covid and different people learned different ways we found out that there were some individuals that actually did much much better with the blended approach so the district is looking into specifically at the high school a flexible learning space or a flexible learning option and to give some choice to our students to have kind of a different kind of study structure and and pace and that would entail creating some new space at the high school so we want to kind of alert the board that we may be needing some capital improvement dollars to do that renovations will be needed and this is just kind of
058a teaser because we have nothing to present at this time other than that this is something that they're seriously looking into and will be working on this summer we are looking into demolition of the woodland school and we have bids out and that may be the best option for that space at this point because it's it's kind of fallen into disarray so that is something also to kind of keep our eyes on um and then we're gonna have two two um motions coming a little bit later in this meeting um the first is the administration building roof bid uh the estimate or we're hoping to stay under 440 000 and actually the bid we're going to be um hopefully approving is for 460 000 um this was not necessarily the lowest bid but the lowest
059bidder was disqualified he they i shouldn't say he but but they they pulled out because they couldn't give us what we needed and the bidder that we are going going to be going with they actually gave us a 12 reduction so originally their original bid was 472 when they came down to 460. so um that is something that we can talk about when we come to that motion um another motion we're going to have is going to be for the uh architecture and engineering fees for the 2023 summer projects remember 2022 we're already actively we've we've allocated and they're happening but the 2023 summer projects um we wanted to kind of get a ahead of the the eight ball so to speak and we were hoping we were going to be able to save some
060dollars by trying to do this in the fall so the committee is we're asking you for 299 thousand dollars um specifically for architecture and engineering um and contingencies just to kind of get started on looking at 2023. even if all of the things we want to do we choose not to do we're still going to ultimately do some of these projects so we're not wasting money by doing some of the planning ahead we're estimated about 3 million dollars worth of work uh recommended for completion uh coming like i say in 2023 much of this is normal maintenance again not referendum this is just maintenance we want to just keep you know do the upkeep on our buildings um there will also be updates to grove and north barrington playgrounds um and i should add in
061addition to that three million were planning on an additional 1.2 million anticipated to work on um out of capital projects to do the um signal right out front here so we'll have a signal going into the administration building and across to the high school um that's going to be yeoman's work because it we have to work with idot and village of barrington and the railroad so we're going through piece by piece and we also have to work with pepsi because to make the signal work we need a piece of their property whether we get an easement or a donation of the property um so actually next summer we can look forward to about 4.2 million dollars worth of work um and hopefully this all kind of falls into budget so anyways two two proposals you'll
062be seeing a little bit later in the meeting and i hope you'll find favorably to vote for them thank you thanks barry finance committee met today and we talked about a number of things we had an update on the trs the supplemental savings plan that was adopted as a law in illinois but the law passed several years ago but we're they're still working out the details of this this is about a deferred compensation plan and our we already have one in our district but this is something that the state is saying we have to do it this specific way so that we're getting more news on this and we should get something in july or august as an update and eventually we'll have a resolution and something to pass when the kinks get worked out
063of it by others and then it's coming to us so sum up you want to add but by the end of september the board has to adopt that resolution right so it's been a long time coming and i will keep updating you but we're not right ready to approve it yet and we're not being not missing any deadlines yet we're good um so we also had a spending and revenue to date update we've done this a number of times throughout the year where we look at compared to last year in this month how is our spending how is our revenue and we're at 82 percent on uh of spending and our revenue as you know because we're in different uh counties it comes in in bits so we're on track on that but it's hard
064to measure today's date because some came in a month ago some coming in in a future month so basically we're in a good position and there's some things that have been different this year just you know substitute teaching was dif was you know sought after so there's a few things that are a little higher a little lower but overall we're in very good shape and nothing to be concerned about um so you know dr byne had a few things in his pocket for our committee as well just a little talk about how there's a shortage of paper so don't use a lot of paper and we're planning for next year and that'll be coming in the future there's another one of those little secrets he's telling and then something something good that's going on is
065our business office is working on a few projects that will come forward in the future to make our business office a destination employment opportunity we have that for teachers we have that for students the business office is saying hey we're we're jumping on board so more to come on that and um it was a good committee meeting so there you go and i think it's worthwhile to add too that this this presentation uh the final thing that leah mentioned is gonna it's gonna address a lot of the issues that i think that parents have brought up in the past about how we do the budget what's included in the budget where information is housed i i will just say personally i think it's a fantastic document that the teams put together of the template that
066we saw where it's all housed in one place so now we're not gonna have to click around on the website although there's new website coming out but we're not going to click around the website to find all the information it's going to be very well consolidated in one document it's gonna be a big document and but i think it's gonna be a good addition to the district and i think it's to enhance how we as a as a community can view the information available to us excellent so policy in uh in that meet uh we had a lot of busy school year but i did want to mention it's day two of summer school and uh i just wanted to commend our staff and our teachers it's like they didn't get a break and they're
067right back into it and um i know i griped a little bit about waiting 50 minutes in the rose parking lot to pick up my kids um less of a weight at vhs but i think the upside to that is that that means their significant enrollment compared with last year in our summer classes and it's really cool to see our kids and our teachers be able to engage in things like mythology and culinary arts and different science experiments um symbolic logic over the summer things they wouldn't normally get to take during the school year so thank you to staff and teachers for that it seems like everything's going well and then i think barrington online summer school boss i think that we can that starts in july and there's still time right dr vern to
068sign up for that so to the community if you need something for your kids to do in july check that out on our website for summer school and a parent and i were talking yesterday and we think that it is the best bargain in the district for summer care and for enrichment for our kids so yeah so thank you for for all the best investment in our kids in the summer thanks aaron okay next up is the consent agenda do we have a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented and i will read through all the contents okay um first i'll just remind everybody there is a revised personnel report so you might want to make sure if you didn't see that that that was put out there today we also have on the
069consent agenda um open and closed minutes from may 17th meeting under our finance reports we have um our assignment or approved we'll be approving our school treasurer and the bond for that so that's something that we do on an annual basis so i'll make sure that you noted that also our hazardous crossing resolution which is another thing we do annually there's no changes to the crossings that we've had in the past no no additional hazardous areas also the student discipline committee report which is another annual review of our student discipline committee and last on the approval for the school calendar for this year so if you read through the memo you'll note that that going forward we'll be doing that not after the end of the school year but um um that's what we had
070to do in in this this is the school year that just ended yes proving that it ended on the last day of school should have been or was it was yes so any questions or comments excellent dr blind you have to get bonded each year i mean it's it's not a law it's a yes you're always have to be bonded for you well i i don't even got it i didn't know how to be every year the the way you know historically on the the or the appointment of the treasurer i think barrington has done every year i've worked at other districts as the the treasurer where it's appointed until somebody else is appointed so it's it's entirely up to the board you can switch that around in case we always behind the scenes make
071sure that i'm bonded on your behalf all right roll call sandra bradford yes steve wang yes erin chanding yes leah callister lazari yes katie carram yes barry alt-schuler yes angela wilcox yes all right motion passes all right let's move on to our action items the first action name do we have a motion to approve the negotiated agreement between the board of education and the bseo for years 2022-2026 oh i'm sorry are the two administrators my apologies i gotta slow [Laughter] and do you want to say anything to the board yeah please i'd love to thank you very much for this uh wonderful once you come a little bit closer to the measurements we can hear you here you want me to sit down thank you very much for the wonderful opportunity for me to share
072my passion for special education here in district 220 i'm looking forward to supporting students and staff and families um all while being a part of the excellent work that is done here in district 220 so thank you again very much for this opportunity i'm excited i've done a great deal of research on this whenever you present to high school faculty or staff they always sit in the last row in the back verifying my study no i can't echo enough um what was said but just very excited for this opportunity thank you very much i'm so excited to serve the community here at barrington um and to you know work with the counseling departments to really create a robust program to really help support our students so thank you very much welcome welcome [Applause] thank you
073teresa i will make sure i glance over that way so now do we have a motion to approve the negotiated agreement between the board of education and the bseo for years 2022-2026 second any summaries that anyone wants to provide i can a little bit yeah i would just say that uh this is a culmination of four months of work uh dr bine teresa we had two board members aaron and katie uh represent the board of education uh it's a significant time commitment to prepare and go through this process uh it's always better when you have a collaborative partner on the other side and we appreciate uh bseo we think this is a very fair agreement for the district and our employees that we value very much yeah i would just add that you know this
074agreement benefits in the employees as well as i'm staying within the financial means of the district and i again want to echo the thanks to aaron and katie for all of their hard work and to dave and teresa for your team's hard work as well and throughout chelsea too in chelsea it was a very respectful and constructive approach and we appreciate your time and energies yeah it was i think it was mine and katie's first time serving on a bargaining team definitely for the district and uh we i know i learned a lot and it couldn't have been a more pleasant experience i think it was very fair and and dave and teresa and our team and the bseo team uh certainly just wonderful to work with yes we had a lot of fun katie
075and i have more inside jokes now right excellent all right let's do a roll call barry all children yes mr lazari yes katie carram yes erin chanding yes sandra bradford yes steve wang angela wilcox yes motion passes congratulations bseo thank you again for your commitment to this negotiation session right next up do we have a motion for to approve the revised um barrington high school athletic program donation agreements there are two agreements that we are that we will be revising we have a motion okay we are bringing these uh agreements back around we received some feedback from the donors after the board action uh i don't we reviewed this it's not substantive in terms of changes but we felt it appropriate to bring if we were going to modify the agreement to bring it back
076to the to the board um and there was a revision made just today so to add an exhibit to one of the agreements so if you didn't if you noticed there was an exhibit missing it's there now so um any questions or comments on these two generous agreements all right let's do a roll call steve wang yes leah callister lazari yes angela wilcox yes sandra bradford yes aaron chanding yes barry altschuler yes katie carram yes all right motion passes do we have a motion to approve the district administrative center roof bid so moved soccer i don't feel like i need to say a whole lot after barry's report kind of covers everything we've been foreign lots of problems so yeah so we have challenged uh our maintenance folks with buckets and hoses uh to direct
077water as you have known over the last couple of months i believe this was actually on schedule for a year from now but obviously the condition and additional damage and costs that we would probably experience made sense to move this up so recommending that we move forward with this project all right let's do a roll call aaron chanding yes sandra bradford yes leah callister lazari yes katie carram yes angela wilcox barry altschuler yes steve wang yes motion passes do we have a motion to approve appropriating up to 299 752 for the initial uh 2023 summer capital project engineering and architectural preparation so moved second okay good discussion on that already too yeah so as barry had mentioned this is a approval or recommendation to approve the a e costs uh for those projects i think
078it is important to point out uh that uh those costs even if the projects we decide not to do those projects uh they're not wasted costs as those are we we value that we know we need to complete these projects and it will be money well spent down the road so this is all money that gets spent this summer so in the next fiscal year right this will be funds spent in summer 23 which primarily will come out of the 23-24 school year but some of which will happen from the end of school until the end of june as well as some of the the work in advance so the bulk of the funds are actually out of the 23-24 school year so the work that's happening this summer primarily comes out of when we
079budget for it out of next week this next year's budget quite a couple of questions so for the playgrounds um i know that we're looking at uh at two playgrounds this year can someone refresh my memory i know that we i don't know if there was a board vote on this a board direction that we took or something but it was a number of years ago where we talked about providing a kind of a baseline for um you know rehabbing some of the older playground facilities and then you know the if the pto wanted to pitch in for additional whatever they could but i thought it was on a yearly basis we would take one playground i just i can't remember could someone refresh my memory on this it was not a commitment on any
080particular quantity per year but it was based on an annual assessment of the facilities so uh we have uh uh which schools we have on here nicole yeah and north barrington was one where actually it pushed a year by request of the pto so they could actually have a little more time to do some fundraising so we we did that assessment determined yes we could go one more one more year without it becoming unsafe where we'd have to be closing it off so we worked with them to push that out one more year to allow some fundraising for that which is more likely the reason that we have two on the same year than anything else given the number of schools and playgrounds we have it wouldn't be typical that we would expect that we
081would be seeing more than one each year all right what is our budget um all in for each school so the the dollar amount that is on here is the district commitment for the playground so when the board agreed to you know this process that we were doing i had solicited multiple proposals on redoing playgrounds we by and large have a large playground in in the small playground at our schools and so at the time we set up an estimated cost to do a a basic playground it was not a you know taj mahal kind of playground it was an appropriate playground for our students and we agreed that we would adjust that by cpi knowing that as years go by the cost will rise on doing that so each year i go through a
082process with our buildings and grounds team most specifically with nicole cetera our director of facilities where we do an assessment of the playgrounds we review that playground assessment in the facilities committee i also update what is the what is the going rate for a playground and so that we look at that each year and if there's a playground that falls in the poor category then we provide our lead time out to our schools to be able to consider doing fundraising and some may do some choose to do fundraising if they don't that then we design work with the principal to design a playground within the budget that is consistent with those inflation-adjusted estimates that we developed a few years ago so is this for big and little we have separate dollar amounts for big and
083little but is this so this is uh i think we've just got the big on here for for both of those uh we did do an exception for lines because they really have one a very large playground that's really the equivalent of a small and a large so when they did theirs we actually combined those amounts knowing that they're not going to have another playground that's going to come up it's going to be another 20 years before you consider doing something with the lions playground again and there's not a second playground there based on the geography you know the geography of the site sorry how many years so life of a playground is typically around we expect around 20 around 20. right and what we do is maintain our playgrounds so that we can get
084the maximum amount of life but based on conditions the equipment the wear and tear environmental conditions all that affects the life of the playground but on the playground report we actually have the age of the playgrounds and the condition on there so we don't it's not oh 20 years we automatically replace it it's when the playground is in poor condition we seek to replace it so but this is a stupid question but so this is just for the architecture and engineering this does not include the cost well this is all in all right so the what you're considering right now is is approving a e cost so that we can now spec out and design these projects but if you look at this list the dollar amount that's there is is the commitment on the
085project so for those playgrounds that's what the district will do and so we will work with a playground design that all in falls within that budget for those playgrounds got it so then my other question was uh regarding the admin building um for the windows i thought that we replaced all the windows when we purchased the property you did not we did not um what's the reception desk so there's a right now in the event of an emergency at the front for example an active shooter we do not have an opportunity for escape that is outside of that room other than going through the public area so this would actually be adding in a door that would allow escape back into this room and back into the secure area of the building oh for the
086reception for the receptionist okay got it angela was asking about playground i have another question about it just because i'm not sure how it works so i know that countryside i think we worked with the countryside pto to a few years ago they fundraised very hard and successfully for a universally designed playground and i think maybe because foundations is there and there's a playground that right every kid can access even kids with mobility issues or whatnot how is that decided and how is funding allocated so for example sunny hill gets a new playground as we put more playgrounds in how did how is that decision made like are we going to have it universally designed and are we going to allocate the money to or is it largely up to pto i mean i just
087don't know how that works typically the playground design process happens at the school level with the principal working with pto students to design a playground of interest so we provide some resources typically early on in the process i will meet with the principal along with mrs cetera she then is the the director of facilities he has some more day-to-day routine interactions around the development of the playground design but that's largely left to the building to decide so if there are if there are concerns around the design that we don't believe that it's appropriate we interject in that but if someone wants one piece of equipment versus another piece of equipment we're not going to say no that's the wrong piece of equipment from a universal design perspective i think really what we're talking about primarily
088is the the type of ground surface that's there and in the equipment like can a wheelchair get up to you know a slide for instance right sure so you know we we certainly look at that uh you know again we do have a budget that you know that that we work within um if you fundraise an extra two hundred thousand dollars beyond what the district provides you have the opportunity to do more things including for example uh a port and place surface now we make it very clear with with our schools our ptos that port and place surfaces are are great but they also wear out faster typically they've got about a 10-year life and actually we're seeing some significant wear and tear already at the countryside playground which is far less than that we're
089having some con conversations with the installer around that but we make it clear that if that fails the district is not going to replace it with a port and place surface because our budget that we're providing does not do that but the wood chips that are there i i believe called craig vemron they are consistent with universal design principles um so that would be that's the district standard for something like that so other equipment is certainly you know we have conversations but by and large that's left at the building level to be able to consider what you know what might fit with their community thank you so much it's great to know sandra bradford yes aaron chanding yes steve wang yes leah callister lazari yes angela wilcox yes barry aldschuler yes we have a motion
090to approve the resolution to transfer funds to capital projects so moved second as you know at the committee of the whole meeting we had a conversation about dseb and borrowing and this is the actual transfer which we would put and transfer those funds into the capital project budget to fund those projects we also talked about that transfer looking a little bit differently next year as we we look at putting that in the operational sides and that is what is forecasted in the budget so we're recommending the approval to make the transfer for this year any questions or comments from the board not really this it's something that we've we talked about almost every year um i think it's important but it is uh something that we would definitely have to plan for that's a 2.3
091million dollar number that we would have to find you know what goes away to offset that okay welcome leah callister yes barry alt-shuler yes erin chan ding yes sandra bradford yes katie carram steve wang yes angela wilcox yes all right motion passes let's get to our discussion items um first up is framework 220. um it looks like we have a document here that we can refer to as well you're given a hard copy as well there's a present the copy the presentation uh is in there well they're coming up does anybody have a score of the softball game five nothing okay at the end of five all right okay we're up for the first world all right go philly thank you you know what inning good night [Applause] okay okay um we are uh very
092excited to share with you uh the culmination of a tremendous amount of engagement uh with our community with our staff uh around the kind of initial foundational pieces of our strategic plan moving forward i think before i jump into this plan as we you know we talked coming into the year whether we try to do this and start this process in the fall or whether we wait till the spring you know the decision was made to to launch this in the spring at that time we knew with time constraints we were not going to get through the entire strategic planning process that we would look at this kind of foundational the foundational pieces of establishing the strategic direction of the district and get those in place get those to a point hopefully that the board
093could feel comfortable and approve with the remaining work to come as we open next year tonight you're going to see again the culmination of a lot of effort and work but i don't want to i don't want to mislead you to think this is done first of all we need to hear from you and get your input into it and second of all uh if i think of mission kind of that broad statement of where we want to go and and what we do that may be about at a hundred thousand feet foot level right if we look at learner profile that's vision that's you know what we aspire to for our students to attain and what we develop in our learners as they proceed through and strategic priorities that's about 50 000 square feet
094or 50 000 feet up in the air and our work you know after we do this is really to define what actual action steps what action what actions will we take on as an administrative team as a staff and as a community that define the work underneath these priorities that is measurable that you can monitor as we go forward for the next two to three years so i want to be really clear what we're bringing forward to you is a draft opportunity for you to give some feedback but it's just really uh the first phase of this as we move forward uh just to go back and and this is actually a slide that i think we included early on when reviewing the strategic plan process that it would have four phases first phase being
095you know community engagement and data collection that really started when i arrived here and started with the listening session tour that i went on and the report that i provided back to the board of education then we engaged with hya to conduct focus groups to obtain data and information from the community input form and bring all of that together to a team of about 50 individuals made up of parents and staff administrative staff teaching staff business leaders in our community as well as we had you know dr proctor from uh harper college there uh helping us as well talking about the skills and competencies we want to develop in in our students and then that work was handed off to the strategic summit participants where we had about 100 individuals that took a look at
096the learner profile provided additional feedback they worked on belief statements they worked on mission and they worked on a draft of strategic priorities we then took those i say took them on the road to nine or ten different coffees throughout our community and within our school district with our staff to hear from our community and tonight you're seeing the result of the the latest iteration of bringing that all together but that really only gets us you know as we kind of finalize this piece only gets us to kind of stage three and the next stage would be launching into the action planning uh next year so by the time we present this as a final strategic plan probably january of next year you will not only have these large foundational pieces but you'll have very
097specific work that is measurable and and what we will work on moving forward so just wanted to kind of do a reset with you on where we were and then jump into the presentation so we talked about all those different uh ways in which we uh gathered information uh if you count up all the meetings that we had we had 693 face-to-face meetings where we talked about strengths of our districts opportunities for improvement and and and really started gathering that data we had over uh 3 500 uh participants uh give input into the community input form uh which we broke down we shared those results with the board of education and they really served as you know the foundation these these meetings and this information served as the foundation uh for the working group so
098the learner profile as well as the uh strategic summit so if you look at this in totality uh and i you know i appreciate somebody jumping in and saying i was involved so i can get it off of this number but 4 44 stakeholders have been engaged thus far and we're not done you know this work will continue as we go through action planning and develop plans where we reach back out and we continue to get feedback so tried to make this very inclusive and i think you'll see tonight as you've seen various iterations of this move over the last couple of months you will see changes and modifications based on feedback that we've even recently received just a reminder the elements that we are looking to prove are going to be the mission statement
099core beliefs learner profile and strategic priorities i'll be talking a bit tonight about the mission statement and its development each of the elements will be preceded by a bulleted list of all the different opportunities we had to hear from stakeholders and how these were developed and the opportunities they were developed in so the mission statement we started at the framework 220 summit where table groups were asked to look at our current mission statement and react to it and we learned a lot about what people thought about our current mission statement which i'll show on the next page just to remind you if you have forgotten the leadership work group was the next group that this went to so leader administrators from the district we a small group of us looked at that we then decided
100to do some formal mission statement research we did identify one scholarly work that was written on school mission statements and we did use that in our in our development of what we're you're going to see as a draft of our new of a possible new mission statement and then the exec council subcommittee was the last group to look at this so now we're bringing it to the board for your input as well so the draft mission statement we're going to be discussing tonight pulled together from all of those different sources is this empower personal excellence in every learner and that is there are a lot of similarities between that and our current mission statement which is inspiring all learners to achieve excellence so the first part of it is just the word empower why did
101we choose the word empower there are a lot there was quite a bit of discussion on the word inspiring and some of it was isn't is just inspiring enough we wanted a stronger word so that's where we came up with in power after we had a lot of discussion on what other possible words for empower we also had the idea of there was a lot of discussion especially at the summit and in some of the coffees about the achieve the concept of achieving excellence a lot of a lot of the feedback we got what sounded like well we're only interested in high grades what about students who who don't want to just get high grades and want to do other things so we decided to come up with a concept of personal excellence where there
102are different versions of excellence so that's that's where that term came from and then finally in every learner the current the current statement says all learners we like the idea of being inclusive so of course we talked about should it be all learners should it be each learner should it be every learner we just we like the way that this sounded and to be as inclusive as possible as far as who we're talking about for the mission so with all that information in mind this is where we we came this is what we came up with for a current draft of a mission statement and we'll be looking for feedback from the board all right so i'm going to talk about the core belief statements that we came up with so as you guys know
103at the framework 220 summit the two days summit there were a lot of good so after the summit hya provided us with sort of themes that emerged from all of those discussions at each of the tables and from those themes as an exec council we were able to take a look at them and review them and then draft our core belief statements we reviewed those together made revisions and then we brought those revisions to our district leadership team just yesterday who also provided feedback to us and if we go to the next slide you will see the eight core belief statements that we came up with you'll notice that there are they incorporate many different themes such as safety and security communication community partnerships of course academics a sense of belonging diversity global awareness and
104social emotional well-being um and all of these are reflections of the conversations that were had both at the summit as well as conversations we had as an exec council team and with the district leadership team okay now moving on to the learner profile as a reminder the community and different stakeholder groups had about six different opportunities to provide input and feedback on the development of our learner profile starting with the learner profile committee in april and then transitioning through our nine community coffees and ending with feedback from our district leadership team so when we think about all of the different components of a learner profile we think of the skills and the mindset so both the academic success skills as well as personal success skills along with rigorous academic content is what we're really wanting
105to equal that deeper learning so based off the feedback that we've received from the board and the community and staff members as well we did make a few revisions to the actual learner profile so you'll see in the middle we have that academic excellence piece represented by calling out rigorous academics so that's what's at the core the students and what they're learning on a day-to-day basis as it relates to our curriculum content whether it's core or electives and then what surrounds that are these personal success skills so what you'll notice as the main difference between the last time you saw the learner profile and now we did receive some feedback from both the board and the community that practices advocacy or it was advocates for self and others prior to this revision and empathy were
106very connected so we did decide to combine them together which you'll see there and did some word smithing with the definition and we also got a lot of feedback that this idea of perseverance resiliency grit leadership there's a lot of collaborative aspects from the beginning to this profile but what was really missing was that individual piece so that you'll see represented and exhibits initiative and self-drive and another component that we like about this particular skill is it's also one of the illinois essential employability skills that came out of the post-secondary workforce readiness act so we're glad that it was aligned with the feedback as well so the last bit of work that we'll share tonight is around strategic priorities and uh again uh just to give you an idea of where where these priorities came
107from uh obviously the data gathering pieces uh brought to uh 11 different focus groups and the community survey brought that information together we started this work at the 220 strategic summit we brought it to executive council hya gave us some recommendations but we kind of looked back a layer at all of the group's work at the summit and tried to pull a draft of this together we took it to our elementary and secondary leadership teams uh to work through and bring drast forward and then we took these out to the nine community coffees as well to give additional feedback and i think uh some of what you are have already heard uh that that was brought forward by our stakeholders is incorporated in in this uh latest version and then yesterday we did work through
108this with uh our district leadership leadership team as well if you look at a couple of the changes that uh have evolved since the last time that we we presented this to the board of education you'll see uh right at the header of this uh this idea of achieving academic excellence uh by innovating and optimizing kind of kind of putting that and pushing that forefront as the major driver of what we do here uh in our schools and that was based on the feedback that we received and and i know you know give board an advanced copy of this to take a look at it but i'm not going to read all of these to you but this is really just a culmination of all of the feedback um that we we you know received
109along the way and and i will remind you once again these are not meant to be you know smart goals where we we give them to the board and uh they're measurable this is this is really to help us form the strategic direction of the district and we will then move into the next phase of strategic planning where we really articulate what those action plans are we'll work with the board get input we'll bring them out to the community and get additional thoughts as well so i think at this time you have a hard copy in front of you i think maybe we will we will talk about you know your feedback first and i'll finish with next steps maybe we could leave the strategic priorities up there and i know board this is a
110lot of information hopefully you've had you've had time to see it kind of as it has evolved over the last couple of months we tried to highlight some of the changes and modifications that have been made based on feedback i know some of you were able to attend coffees and conversations so maybe you would be able to you know speak to some of the feedback that you heard and did we captured or not so i'd like to open it up to you to your thoughts as we move into kind of the next iteration of this i'm happy to launch and i want to start out by saying dr fuller you do the most amazing job running these things i love it when you are running a group because you just i don't know how you
111do it but you make everyone feel important you keep things moving forward and you let everyone talk but you still you're very on time and i love that so i'm aside from all this we gotta agree and graphics in the graphics so um i mean i just had i had a couple of comments on a few things not a lot there was one area where i had more do you just want to start by topic strategic priorities so i think it's great um i think one of the i don't know who it was it one of the uh coffees suggested that under future readiness if we use the verb prepare instead of engage i don't know i mean i i thought that was kind of it was like more assertive um i kind of liked
112that but you know again not to part a lot of stuff here um we might have had that but we have prepared later on we have repairs later yeah so did we yeah to prepare them for okay so maybe that's it um and then i do like to see the word like globally at some point you know used within this and i don't know if globally inclusive education or something like that like even beyond the walls of 220 like exposing kids to you know i mean there there are so many different things that you see when you leave this town and these structures and um you know and the preparedness needs to be not just beyond understanding you know these perspectives but you know globally so that was a suggestion i had but i think
113that belongs in future readiness too okay like prepare them for these yeah i mean it was it was rich in our last it was and i just didn't see it i mean i'm sure it's in here somewhere but it just wasn't as highlighted and that's what kind of stuck out to me i like it anybody else it's in the core beliefs the global awareness yeah well and it is and so you know with core beliefs i had different comments but that was just for strategic priorities and future readiness yeah i think that's where it's been there yeah um does everyone just want to talk about priorities first yeah sure do priorities for sure um i have a i have a couple of comments and questions um first of all thank you i mean this is
114so much work and um i know that we tried to include a lot of voices uh and thank you for putting this together and the honeycombs the beehives are very memorable um a couple of questions i'm wondering uh you know i'm wondering under health and well-being if maybe we should have some more emphasis on mental health especially because it is such a priority i mean it should be a priority period but um you know with all that we've lived through um with this pandemic we know what an impact it's been having on kids and students especially um so i'm wondering if we can maybe emphasize that as well and i know we talk about physical safety in our core beliefs but i'm wondering if maybe we should also talk about you know a physic a
115physical a physically safe and secure environment in addition to mental health and i imagine this is where a lot of our social and emotional learning work would fall as well the the inclusive education i have a little i you know i understand embrace and celebrate diversity i understand all learners have equitable access to a high quality education to achieve their potential i'm wondering i'm a little bit fuzzy it seems a little vague when we say refine and build educational systems from pre-kindergarten through post-high school transition could you elaborate a little bit more on what we mean by that yeah i think it's being able to look at both education and school and the structures and the programmings that we have within each of those so sometimes when we look at some of our educational programming
116we have to look at what school looks like in conjunction with how the educational program looks like like with the flexible learning space that would be a a system because they are having the access to their education and the curriculum but the space in which they learn it is physically different so that looking being able to look at school and education we did hear you know quite a bit and you know survey and focus group there were certain programs that individual you know thought we needed to revisit and look at and that's why we wanted to include that refine you know educational systems programs being able to take a step back and say okay this is what we have been doing it served us very well however there's these concerns let's let's take a step
117back and reflect upon that and make any adjustments that we need to i'm wondering if just for clarity's sake we can maybe be you know more specific maybe in addition to systems include you know talk about programming or curriculum or something if if it's appropriate because it just seems kind of vague to me um it's something to consider and i wonder if i got a little bit thrown by stewardship like i know that it seems like here we're talking about fiscal stewardship uh like climate and ecology i wonder the recruit hire and maintain a diverse high quality staff to me that seems like it would fall more under an inclusive education or an inclusive and equitable education more than it doesn't really make sense to me under stewardship um so i think that's something that
118i was a little bit thrown by and i i guess i i unders i just wonder if you know if we need yeah i guess when i think about stewardship i immediately think about financial stewardship and our referendum in our buildings and i wonder if i need to shift the term or if i'm getting i just wonder why we it seems to be more of a catch-all of things that are really good and admirable but i i got a little bit thrown by that i didn't and i just the this staffing um like hiring and retaining quality staff right from from diverse backgrounds all backgrounds to to reflect our district that seems to me like it could fall it could make more sense under the inclusive education part uh so i that's some feedback but
119you know i think i okay so i'm gonna explain pause because you you threw out three things i don't know we're all okay so let's go to the the um the stewardship one it doesn't bother me that it's there because it's how we're spending our money is i'm assuming where where are you where you guys came to him i think there's going to be overlap across several of these things there's going to be things in that future readiness that that are going to cost money too so there's going to be overlap i wear so i don't know about everybody else but is everybody comfortable with um the staffing staying under stewardship i kind of feel like it belongs in the inclusive learning as well but i can see where it could go in stewardship as
120well but it's you know it's a little bit of both it's equitable and it's teachers our staff is 75 of our budget and you know the goal is to hire you know we are always looking for the best candidate as well so i don't i think that it's where it should be i wonder should we specify them and say like fiscal stewardship do you think it does talk about maintaining fiscal responsibility but also ecological i mean so now we're it's broad we can't do fiscal studies yeah remember where we remind us where we are you're way up but that ecological sustainability was a big piece of the summit in multiple groups oh and i agree it should be a priority i just i'm getting a little bit thrilled by the by my stewardship as i
121catch off for that i wouldn't say it's a catch-all well i guess i'll let you guys get started could we add buildings too because then it's all the big ticket items you know perhaps it says a physical environment yeah it talks about physical therapy yeah we've been through these words so many different times i think we went with physical environment to capture you know actual facility and also culture i would sit within a while so we're okay to keep it weird i think there's a couple people that might like to move but everybody else is okay leave where it is okay let's find where it is okay which way are we talking about there's the drafting part of the stewardship the staff yeah your company staffing under stewardship yep now um you brought up inclusive
122education um oh i had suggested because in addition to systems maybe you know adding something about programming or curriculum if just to refine it a little bit be so it's not as vague systems is broader i mean does that incorporate curriculum i mean i suppose i think it would be helpful moving forward to could we say systems and programs or i think we're talking about choosing i think we're talking about programs and we're talking about equitable programs and i and i don't think that it covers both unless i'm misunderstanding the systems part to promote equitable and inclusive systems under the inclusive education part i don't know that that covers that it's so can you please explain what the systems include i think you've answered this once i think the system is the umbrella right the
123entire educational system which includes what a student experiences as it relates to their programming their grade level the particular standards the content area the curriculum the instructional resources and then you have the physical school building and the structures of a student's school day all of that is part of the system so i guess if it's called inclusive education like what you just said we do already we evaluate our programs we evaluate things continuously but if the focus is on an inclusive education do we make that more clear underneath the thing with the definition where the inclusive piece comes in it's ensuring all students have access which that's what we mean by the all learners have equitable access to a high quality education to achieve their potential but to me that doesn't maybe i'm not understanding
124it right but i don't connect that to it's like two sentences so it's two ideas sort of the way i'm looking at it it doesn't connect as tightly as i as i would hope the priority is inclusive education and it talks about embracing and celebrating diversity refining and building educational systems as a large umbrella and having access revised and then the next piece was once you have all of that you have to make sure that all students have access to that so one small example could be that we offer internship right now at our high school but right now our internships are off campus and the only way a student can access an internship right now is if they physically have a car so that work would be where the inclusive piece and the access
125piece comes in to being able to have to get to that high quality educational program that we offer well and i like how this brings in i i feel like sometimes a lot of the focus ends up being in the heist you know more in the high school and i like that this goes like we're a unit district like this needs to start and pre-kindergarten and move through and that i think when we we talked about systems that point came out quite a bit one make sure you're marketing us as unit district because it's something differentiates us and two the transition piece came up a lot from elementary to middle middle to high and area focused and we look at scaling this down i would imagine you would see work in the in that regard
126so the word systems doesn't bother me but it also wouldn't bother me if it said systems and programming if that helps clarify things it would help yeah curriculum programming i guess i'm looking at you guys to see if it will bother you those are to me those are clearer i don't know when you write it just seems like if it was programs curriculum um it's redundant or do you feel like it's it's yeah you're just trying to be sustainable right exactly yeah because system is that overarching umbrella and everything falls into that because a program is part of a system i think we could put systems including programs and resources or we could be very specific in our action plan so that it's clear so a different way to look at it maybe just suggestion
127is to make the title of the category stronger so that we know what it is and make it something that's you know provide equitable diverse and inclusive education and that's a bigger umbrella and more clear and stronger language you know when i was looking at other strategic plans for other districts that were comparable to us or our neighbors there were many that that had those words in them that were strong and were obvious and clear and you know things like stevenson lake zurich gray's lake our neighbors schools we we usually you know we want to be the leaders in these things who other schools that we respect and look up to too so that's another way to look at it since we're going top down and details so at the bottom so you wanted to
128change the header and put in an action word is what i heard i don't know what the action word was but what i look when i see this you've got kind of a title and then the actions underneath the priority right and i wouldn't want to change that structure and diversity and equity or equitable access are included correct in this description let's be honest we had a lot of pushback over i don't know it was a lot but it was um emails on one side and not the other you know about we can't ignore one side there's a louder group of people saying that than the people at the beginning on the listening tours that were liking the word equity and liking equity work for our district so i'm not saying that there's more of
129one or more of the other but there's been louder ones more recently but i think what's written here defines it defines clearly what what the words mean we're going to embrace and celebrate diversity to me that's pretty clear and then refine and build and then ensuring we've got the equitable access i agree with you sandra i think that you know part of the the pushback is questions regarding definitions and this is responsive to to those comments it does provide definitions and it tries to provide them broadly enough so that they can be further defined as we start to narrow in on what exactly this work is yeah i agree i think it's responded to that feedback although i guess here's a question for you katie do you think it still makes sense if we just
130said all learners have access no i think i think it has to be equitable access you got to put that in there you got to leave it in there we didn't have opposition to equitable access i think people some people oppose equitable outcomes but totally great at that point but i guess i don't want to you know confuse the confuse the message here which is that you know everyone has access um and then as far as diversity goes you know i think you know just kind of judging from today's public comments judging from the emails we've gone judging from the coffee and conversations that i attended i mean i think the biggest thing about diversity that we need to take into account is we need to remove any sort of politics from class or from
131school you know i don't i've heard that multiple times um and i think you know it goes to kind of a core so let me give you just a couple of things that i observed it's we need to focus on a core which i think we're now acknowledging but i don't see anything definitively saying that we're gonna remove that from school and maybe the answer here is that it's not there but it's definitely there on some level in pockets because i do feel like you know if in order for us to truly be diverse and inclusive shouldn't we allow and welcome all positions not just certain positions um i'm trying to think there's anything else in here that i took notes on what you're referring to what are you doing what are you recommending yeah
132i think what i'm saying is we fold that in here somehow if it's if you guys are with me that that's not necessarily brought up and i don't think it is i'm sorry fold what in folding the concept of diversity of all ideas and then kind of along those lines is the concept of safety i don't see that in here either and i'm not sure where to place it but to me and based on again what i've been hearing and based on so many different avenues safety should also include that ability to express yourself and not be censored because you do have a conservative view or a liberal view i mean regardless what it is you should be able to put that out put that forth and i don't necessarily see that in here either
133doesn't embrace and celebrate diversity include that though i mean you talk about diversity of race versus diverse ideas diversity of ideas i mean it includes all kinds of diversity diversity of ability diversity right like it doesn't specify well i guess that's honestly healthy you have foster a safe and healthy and supportive environment that's the first line there we threw around we did put out do we need security there that was an item well i guess steve's point if you i think if you were to add that it would be under number one which the latter part of it bullet one would be to ensure experiences are relevant to students and i guess that's not even where it would be yeah i'm not i'm not saying i know words which thing are you trying to add
134and i'm one of them to to to feel like you're in a safe place to say your opinion okay i know we're only talking about the strategic priorities at the moment but understanding diverse perspectives and elevating diverse perspective is in the learner profile oh yeah circle back i'm i'm okay with systems as long as we're specific in our action plans like what that includes like so if we talk about those programs and we talk about the resourcing and we talk about like i think i think if this is the area of you i'm okay with that i just need a little clarification because samia's like what does systems encompass what do we mean so as long as we define it in the future i'm i'm fine with it are what we are do or are
135you or are we okay to add and programming does that perturbate things or is that okay to say systems and programming if that helps you that would help i just think you then have you you're going to list curriculum are you going to how much are you going to list there well there's an understanding we'll we'll specify that in the future right with with our action plannings like we'll define what the systems encompass exactly right okay are you good well i would like the header to be stronger with with more words it does i don't it doesn't need to be an action word and not match the others but um you know inclusive and equitable education um it would make it stronger you know because even though in the wording it talks about equitable access
136well well i think equitable education is broader than equitable access right i think right it's a bigger umbrella define equitable education just so i mean i think it's ensuring that every student has the resources that that student needs to reach that student's full potential but it literally it's exactly what it is what it says you just read it i mean i i don't i feel like it's redundant i mean we're trying to keep the wording you know succinct and not too broad here you know we we can define better later that's the idea yeah would you rather have and now we're going to get more details would it help to have equitable education instead of inclusive education and accepting others i mean that's they're two different concepts that i think it is all covered under
137inclusive i i disagree respectfully that i think it's not it's more clear if it's diverse equitable and inclusive we're stating what we're already doing we have a we have a board equity statement we have a director of equity racing cultural sensitivity i mean why not have it in a strategic priority heading you know like just because we don't put special education as a strategic priority we don't have to list every single right element of our district respectfully what you said is already there right but if it's in the header it's it's the header is even broader it is and don't you think that this includes special education yeah education yes i mean doesn't that fall under inclusive education and if you limit that by putting diversity equity and inclusion then i think the suggestion was
138inclusive and equitable education right you're making it a bigger definition not smaller if you add two more words by adding words you make it bigger and you make it stronger and a lot of times inc like inclusion is used a lot in the disability community right so it's used to to to embrace you know everyone's abilities and so i think equitable ads you know it encompasses more neurodivergence race gender socioeconomic more than assuring all learners have equitable access to high quality education to achieve their potential like we literally say well i think it's important to have the bullets be important right i mean i think that's refining it even more ideas but if we have inclusive and edu and equitable education and then we later define it to that specific you know they can reach
139their potential so that they can reach their potential [Applause] agree to disagree on whether or not it's a large or vocal or whatever group of our community i think this group has done a really good job at listening to feedback and trying to avoid words that were inflammatory and caused angst in our community and i think that they have done a really good job of doing that with this with the way they've done it i guess i disagree a little bit and i think it's a little watered down when you take away the stronger language that's really saying what we what we believe as a community and i think the majority of the community believes that and when we talked about equitable education in the last presentation we did talk about i mean there was
140a large question presentation on staffing and leadership and hiring and retention and so if we're just going to say inclusive education then i i really do think we need to move that part up because that was so so core to how we practice you know equitable education what part the recruit hire maintain a diverse and high quality staff i mean that was you know that was like of the presentation we had from fair it is there under stewardship it's so core to an equitable education i don't think when you talk about recruiting hiring and retaining staff of high quality staff of all backgrounds it almost always comes under we're going to be here all night if we keep revisiting so we already agreed that that was a stewardship it's trying to keep some order well
141i agree with leah with inclusive and equitable education if we're going to keep that down there okay did two other people agree with you guys i mean if we don't have four we don't have four but do you guys have any other ideas but we could i mean i i think we we we have been all of these places okay all right we we did this to capture both the the diversity celebration of diversity and then the equitable piece and it it is i mean these are definitions for the headers so this is what the header means okay um and then i look at you know and we we worked through this nate was involved in these conversations we look at what is the actual work we're doing and we feel like it aligns well
142with with the definition i mean i think the most important thing is to define the work well i mean like we could just hustle back and forth over language but really it's about the work right like it's about creating this sense of belonging exactly you know encouraging our students to achieve their potential so as long as we're specific on that you know we don't i don't really i don't really want to fight too hard over specific words but i think it's and i could understand it if you didn't see a place where that work would fall but it's really overt and clear this is where this work falls right yeah i mean i think if we define our actions action plans well okay so we're are are you okay we're not all gonna agree on
143these things yeah that's just i mean i don't think there's seven of us we're not all gonna agree on these things so i've said what i feel and what i believe is a good idea and if others agree that's great and if others don't then that's where that is so so i feel like we're keeping the the header then of inclusive education i'm just looking to see if anybody disagrees beside leah i can support either but i you know i'm happy with the way it is but if if we have four that want to include you know something in there i i'll be happy to support that so i'm not i'm not against it but i think inclusive the way it is especially with everything underneath it you know gives the superintendent the kind of
144the the edict from us that we're going to now get some details to figure out you know the details of exactly how this is going to be carried out i like inclusive and equitable education like leah said but i i don't yeah i don't know if we have four so if we don't then inclusive education is fine yes but i want to make sure i get through everything sorry one other thing and then steve brought up two things that we didn't address the mental health sorry yeah so under health and well-being mental health too what if we just added the words after personal wellness and and mental health does that cover it is that have you guys already been there or do it yeah we haven't used personal wellness because we thought it captured both
145did we say that i kept that after i read it again but i don't think there's any harm in highlighting it i think it's fine to add it personal wellness and mental health under that sense that's where we'll add it yep okay that works for me does sel fall in there yeah yeah i think so is it okay as long as it's very clear to me it's clear um okay so then we say foster can we take healthy out of that can we just say foster a safe and supportive environment while promoting and creating conditions for balance and support of personal wellness and mental health that way we're not staying healthy and healthy in the same way you could replace healthy with secure if you wanted to bring oh three s's oh i like it
146so it would read like this foster a safe secure and supportive environment while promoting and creating conditions for balance in support of personal wellness and mental health yes if only the other one was this easy it is it says in the page before and the core beliefs like emotionally safe and physically safe is there a way to make it say that in this sentence to where the security part is somehow to say where are you i'm in health and well-being and we just said we wanted to have a safe secure healthy and supportive environment no we crossed that healthy yeah we said teachers we haven't seen the safety and the environment is the physical okay it can be the physical uh-huh emotional too and we've covered mental health okay okay all right i'm good okay
147did you need to read it one more time yes please foster a safe secure and supportive environment while promoting and creating conditions for balance and support of personal wellness and mental health yes okay it sounds good good and then we're just we're keeping inclusive education yes is that we're keeping inclusive education okay um but other changes just a summer angel well actually steve you had two things that you want diversity of ideas did you want to add that into priorities somehow or where were you or do we think that's already covered under the learner profile you know um i do think it's a priority that we need to list out separately because i have heard that on multiple occasions in multiple venues um as far as where let me think about this a little bit
148more you think it should be a seventh priority i think it should be a priority but i think we can enhance one of the sex here and i'm just so thinking under under the inclusive education it talks about embracing and celebrating diversity i think that's all diversity isn't the definition of diversity like everything again we're the broad part now we'll come down and talk about details well and i guess maybe this ties in the idea of safety that i was getting to where you know i guess what i don't want to see happen is that you know some are censured for their ideas provided that they're you know in accordance with what i'll just call moral standards and so again i'm not sure i have a necessary recommendation on where but i don't think that's
149necessarily clear in here either so i i guess i'd be fine secure and does the safe secure and supportive environment capture that stuff well tonight it comes over and awesome supportive environment two conversations i want to make sure stephen i personally feel like it's covered in what we just changed to foster well i think when you say secure i think that makes it better i guess it just comes down to you know something that was said earlier today too in regards to um you know kind of how certain parents are viewing what how things are done in our district i i don't know what i don't know and i don't know what we are doing as far as you know parental involvement so to me that's another safety issue we took there's concepts in here
150about gender affirmation and you know some of these what i'll call growth and family life classes that we've read about i i don't know how maybe this goes under community partnerships and communication i almost feel like we need to have a better process of so that's an action plan item but but yeah i think that that process will come out like just what we were talking about this inclusive education i think that we we have to be able to trust that you know dr hunt and everyone when they start to put together these next steps are going to look at you know this does clearly say cultivate and maintain strong partnerships amongst the district and community stakeholders which that's parents you know i mean it's it's including [Music] all stakeholders sure then maybe maybe what
151i'll do is i'll share maybe rather than adjustments to this maybe the feedback i should share now for the development of the action plan is that how this should manifest itself as far as communication and partnership goes is clear very i would say actually very clear guidelines on how to opt out of things and have that maybe not even be an option maybe it should be opting into certain things because again there are things discussed today things that we've got over email where parents are just not in agreement with what we're pushing out to our students and in a lot of instances it sounds like they didn't have the option to opt out or didn't have the wherewithal to know how to opt out and personally i think if we're if we have a system
152to opt out why can't we have a system to opt in for some of these well i think this is uh but i think we're getting in the weeds yeah we all but i'm just that's just the comment but i think that that that transparent communication is part of that right so that's in here here it says seeks to understand be sensitive and elevate others diverse perspectives to ensure everyone has well equitable access versus sex but diverse perspectives is right in there as they pointed out yeah they did a great job okay yeah i mean that's in the learner okay but i agree with you that i do think we need to revisit that when we can talk about it i think that can be clear in action plans as well like that that seems
153like more of a specific item sandra my one thing was should we should we note anything about learning loss in this or very good point i know that you can probably fold it into something but under personalized learning i don't know i don't know what you guys guys talk about that at all yeah and so really what we want to be doing for all students is accelerating their their learning and the progression of the standards so we want the strategic plan to outlive any pandemic and so while we are always going to meet students where we're at and move them along the learning continuum we are are showing that our students are where we want them to be and we've intervened appropriately so i would hesitate to put learning loss in something like a strategic
154priority because that's something that we're always going to do when planning for instruction analyzing our data identifying students for tier two and tier three interventions that's just what is at the core of what we do that goes with the educational systems the mtss process and yeah okay i just wanted to make sure that that was you know and i understand like it's not you you want your priorities to look forward not backwards but you also don't want to lose those kids that you know maybe are you know have fallen behind and you know still need additional support i think it's kind of the same way with the scl like we're not saying double check every child because of covin we're saying social emotional learning and pay attention every child all the time i mean what
155the exact words are in here but like we're paying attention to that i think it parallels maybe angela a little bit that we don't and it's a core belief right a strong academic foundation yeah so for priorities i i have uh a few changes adding global globally to the future readiness i'm just going to check our check you guys have the same um the health and well-being what i read before i can read it again where would you add the global we're going to add it in the future readiness they're going to answer oh okay so future readiness and global something something exactly i thought it was going to be in the in the sentence oh i see okay um and then change health and well-being that i've read before and the word secure and
156end with mental health got it and those are the two changes i have we talked about a lot of other things but we agreed to keep them all the same correct no can you say your second change again the second change is to change health and well-being to what i read before foster a safe secure and supportive environment while promoting and creating conditions for balance in support of personal wellness and mental health right but we're keeping health and well-being for the heading yes okay okay we've talked a little bit about the learner profile and the core beliefs is there any other um changes that anybody wanted to see there i would suggest one change under and this i mean again i don't know how you guys did this but i really think you listened so
157i mean i think it's awesome but the the one suggestion that i have as far as just word smithing is under exhibits initiative and self-drive um because it's action like it's practicing so practicing leadership personal responsibility and goal setting is how i would phrase it instead of like it should either be three verbs or one verb and then three but i also wonder if we want to add um the word accountability in there as well i mean i know that accountability and personal responsibility could be synonymous but i think there's also some distinctions so i would just throw that out for discussion to the group see if there are any thoughts i was also going to have the word resiliency in there i liked i was going to say i'm going to say well you're
158thinking about that word i had i had the word resiliency yeah i like that too i like resiliency adding it to the self-drive part yes yes there was a lot of conversation around resiliency did you guys not like that term or i mean there's a lot of conversation around what are you resilient to and so i think we need to be careful as we step through the words that we're choosing to put on this piece of paper because we're going to build it out pre-k 12 plus to so students know and understand what the expectations are at each grade level so what resilience looks like for you know a kindergartner might look different than an 11th grader and as we're programming in our systems i i don't know if resiliency is the right word for
159a learner profile what was the word angela you wanted to add accountability accountability thank you you said goal setting as opposed to setting goals right yeah goal setting i think that's i got that i agree i agree with that goal setting you guys good with that yes okay and then adding accountability well i want to hear um dr byrne did you guys talk about accountability at all yeah we actually talked about it in alignment with reliability and accountability as it relates to the some of the employability skills that are out there i definitely think it could work take it back so you would add it here yeah we can yeah so read something like demonstrates commitment accountability you guys going to take that back smith yeah and we'll look at the verbs too but you
160wouldn't practice accountability right it would probably be somewhere else than that okay could be demonstrates commitment it demonstrates commitment accountability and personally through something and then the next step to this is this is the main definition but as we build it out there'll eventually be like sub-bill sub-bullets that teachers could use so maybe it falls under a sub-bullet this is such an errand comment but under advocacy and empathy you um we need an apostrophe after others elevate others diverse perspectives because it's on my screen oh is it on yours yeah uh i just don't have it on the printer okay he already corrected it all right okay so the two changes under exhibits and initiative add the word accountability and swap that around a goal setting got it anything else you know again i just
161want to echo what angelo said you guys listen to the crowds and you know people ask for the academics in the middle because that's the main thing and everything kind of revolves around it so i'm glad you heard that and added it that's great and i like that you chose rigorous academics too as opposed to academic excellence because of the because everyone's personal definition of excellence could be really different right but rigorous academics that's core right that's a given well and academic excellence is something that you reach through rigorous academics because we want this to be a student-facing document yep like that anything here we said no at a resilience we said no to resilience okay i was we were shot down i'm actually i don't like brazilians so i'm actually happy that that triggered
162me through the trouble the doctor shot us down or we weren't strong enough to fight back um what about corbin is i'm trying to look at this and see is there a place where strong social emotional skills would come forth which which box i think that's kind of the the practices advocacy and empathy box and in rigorous academics social emotional learning is part of our curriculum okay okay thank you i mean this is just and i know you guys already condensed this so i'm not asking you to do more than that but i will say so practices advocacy and things critically they both repeat the consider taking multiple perspectives diverse perspectives i mean i guess perhaps it's worth repeating um but so steve it's really in there we really do want to take a diversified
163okay things critically and solve its problems while considering multiple perspectives practice practices advocacy and then okay to elevate others diverse perspectives so i do feel like they're just again but we're just really emphasizing it i think the context is a little bit different so when i think of the advocacy and empathy i think more of the human side of a student whereas when i think of things critically and solves problems you might be writing a paper and having to access different resources that have opposing viewpoints so that you can make an argument and a counter argument i agree we're even debating in the classroom to students with different perspectives yeah well and even like i think under things critically and solves problems it also probably would relate to considering the source of your you know
164perspectives that you're gathering to support your arguments as well how about core beliefs we didn't talk about anything in core beliefs i really like them i like them too i had some alterations suggested let's hear it well what we have on this is different than what we have on our print it's just a different order i think i was trying to double check that it's just a different order yeah we we wanted to try to alphabetize them and uh all the same stuff there though i think they're all the same flipped respect and appreciation yes i did the same thing earlier and then i was quickly trying to four five six seven eight yeah i think they're all there they are yeah so i i felt like i appreciate that and maybe i'm wrong but
165i to me i think that part of 220 there are two beliefs that are kind of lacking in this and one is um you know facilitating leadership or you know the ability to to build strong leaders and the other is character um because i think that a lot of these you know these these learner profile things really are about developing someone who you know it's body soul mind you know and what that means as far as your character um and and to me there was some duplication as far as a few of these um options so to me foster a safe a sense of belonging and ensure that all feel valued and respected and create learning environments where all feel physically and emotionally safe i think that we could put that as foster a sense
166of belonging ensure that all feel physically and emotionally valued respected and safe i mean to me they they almost say the exact same thing except physically is included in this bottom one and emotionally is duplicated i i don't know correct me if i'm wrong but i with the create learning environments i think of facilities yeah i i did too that's what i was thinking for that one so i felt like one was facilities and one was more the social emotional the environment the social emotional oh i see that okay all right i stand corrected okay then i those look good um my other two that i thought were you know kind of restating similar values are appreciate and respect diversity and value multiple perspectives to develop global awareness i mean i would i feel like
167you can again i feel like that goes back to and maybe that's when i was saying global awareness when i was talking about inclusive education and maybe you guys don't agree with me but i i felt like those two could be you know appreciate in respective respect diversity and develop i don't know i see the first one is more about identity the appreciate and respect diversity and then the multiple perspectives is more about um like insight right and thought so one is more humanity right and one and the other is more how you're thinking that so i see them in the world outside of 220 is the the yeah yeah right right and the first one is more like you're like seeing you and your full humanity interpersonal inside 220. okay all right um okay
168well then i would still i would um reassert the character and leadership core beliefs as potential add-ons not to have too many bulbs do we think that's part of the academic foundation a little bit or no that's not strong enough well you know i guess with core beliefs what do we build off of our core beliefs what is our what are our action items based on our definition of our core beliefs is it just something we put on a website or is it something that we actually for me these are like you're non-negotiables these are the things we value at our core that um set the standard for what we do how we treat kids how we treat each other and it's committing to those things in writing when you say it like that then
169i definitely think that developing students with strong character is i would think at the core of what we do i don't have an issue i'm sure we could we could draft somebody yeah i don't i'm more concerned about the word leadership what does it mean there's a lot of different ways are we are we trying to crank out ceos are we are we no i think that's legitimate that's a good question i think to me a leader is someone who is not just fearless in you know they can they can bring a group along with them you don't necessarily have to be at the forefront right but you definitely need to be part of the discussion and in the fold so you have to be able to be demonstrating these learner profiles sorry i i
170don't know if you had this the conversation of you start with a question does everyone have to be your leader and can everyone be a leader and your answer to that drives this and i don't know you guys would be able to tell me if this practicing leadership piece revolved around that conversation at all help solve complex problems and work collaboratively with others yeah so you don't have to be the yeah you're not the the ceo necessarily leadership was one of those words that came up at the strategic summit and i've heard from many people a lot of feedback that if you say everyone has to be a leader then kids who have an iep who might not be able to be a leader might that doesn't include them the leadership piece was attached to
171kind of what you were talking about earlier was attached to the global piece of developing global leaders and understanding the world is a lot bigger than barrington so your impact on the world depending on your your choices and your path post high school could make an impact locally or you know in the nation or the world maybe it's about the impact piece we suggest this because we still have one more presentation right that we need to get through tonight he's fine actually i'm about to go get my charger because if i'm not a battery but yes actually no charge that was fast presentation if we're if we're i was going to suggest this if we're all good with with adding leadership and character to the core beliefs some way could we ask dr hunt and
172team to go back and do that and they bring their facts less character than leadership i don't know but they talked about leadership in a bit different definition than even what i came in with and it's the same question that you're going to ask can hearing that that concern about leadership can you ask them to take it back and come back to us on the core beliefs we'll look at this again i'm just we've got to get or we're going to stay past 10. what do you guys want to do are there four of us who are interested in leadership or maybe there aren't i don't know i'm interested in leadership i think the adding is that adding it to the core beliefs well i mean i think there's something to be said about leadership
173and reaching your highest potential you know and whatever that means to you we're already talking about leadership and learner profile [Applause] you want to say i i agree with reaching your own your your you know your personal personal your personal excellence that's in the mission statement right right so yes [Music] can we work on the character piece for now then are there four for characters i think there's four for character i'm gonna give a character you're okay with characters are you okay with characters we know angela so steve's shaking his head so character for sure okay can i ask a really quick question about why did we say appreciate and respect diversity for core beliefs and then embrace and celebrate diversity under strategic priorities is there a reason why we chose different verbs from the
174exercises that we used at the community summit that's what we wanted to stay as true to the community feedback as possible and this is what came out of that they're like great verbs they're just yeah one's a little bit more engaging than the other just curious okay just to finish off incorporating for people that want to um add something about leadership and or personal excellence or however character for sure i wanted to hear ask leadership well i'm sorry you're asking i thought you were telling me asking do we have four people looking for thumbs up three okay we got four people so you guys will come back and give us what that looks like so that we can i have a request to just kind of you know maybe flesh out leadership a little bit
175more so that we're not thinking you have to be this like type a corporate scientist i think we've covered that yeah you guys heard that right somebody's gotta follow on certain things and someone's gonna lead at certain things right like you can't you can't have all leaders and everything so we're okay with okay so we are not finished the presentation you guys had next steps next right yeah dangerous ground at 10 o'clock at night this is how you guys i like it it depends what time of day it is so four next steps uh obviously we'll take you in your feedback or make modifications i will circle this back to you probably through a weekly okay um prior to the board meeting and then i'd like to bring it to the board for approval on
176uh at the june 21st meeting if the board is amenable to that okay we'll bring it back two weeks before that so we have time to look at it and give it today that's today sorry that is sorry that's involved i apologize i'm gonna go home so sorry i'm so sorry so funny so he'll have an update on thursday gotcha so the week and then this we can put it on the agenda for the 21st as an action item for approval or you can push or if you if we have strong feedback that we need more time then react to his his updates gotcha okay how's that i think we should empower personal excellence in all of us all right and every learner so the last thing is these will go to um obviously our
177district leaders do have uh reviewed these they will go to uh building principles as they're setting vision going through their vision cycles as they're setting goals the work although we have action plans to create and bring back to this board the work that happens next year will start to align with the strategic vision so when will we start to see that action plan drafts that'll be september just remind me yeah we will kick that work off in september so yeah it'll be it'll be you know december january before you get all those and those will be much more specific and clearer much more less less broad okay cool thank you all okay thank you thank you thank you so much great work a lot of work so now that dr bine has power he's going
178to exert his he's going to use leadership and character and accountability and give us an update on sustainability so there's two they have to do semi-finals on finals yeah wow i'm just giving you a memo that's really related back to facilities it's not directly related to their presentation but it's it's for your review and something to think about if you also consider some of our sustainability options any presentation that starts after 9 45 gets a free coffee or something tomorrow we do have it in front of us are we gonna spend ten minutes let's let's just get started and see if we can the tv's went off yeah the tvs went off uh so thank you for this opportunity to talk with you about energy sustainability um i have here with me uh nicole cetera
179who's our director of facilities we also have mark lewis you may not know mark but mark works for nicole and if you recall a number of years ago we were engaged in an energy program to minimize the use of energy across the district we were using a company called synergistic at that time that contract ended and you approved hiring a staff member to continue the efforts using um using uh the software that we had and mark is the individual that we hired to do that so i've asked nicole and mark to take a look at what are what are we doing in regards to energy sustainability and what might be some options that we have to consider here in the district so as we go to the you know the second slide you can see
180the agenda that we've got tonight and we're going to work to try and get through it fairly quickly but we've got four items mark's going to step through those uh and leave the presentation you may also hear from nicole and from me as well if we want we can also try it on this device here to see if all right thank you now we know okay all right so mark take it away perfect uh so hi everybody thank you dave i'm mark lewis i'm the energy specialist for the school district and uh we'll start with some sustainability concepts and answer the question why is it important so we pulled this quote from the u.s environmental protection agency because it does a great job of summing up how why we should look forward into forward thinking
181on and regarding energy and the consumption in our district uh now trust me the humorous context of a long-haired millennial speaking to you about the need for sustainability is not lost on me but i'm going to power through that anyways there are a lot of different ways that we can support our environment and we'll be discussing a couple of those ideas today so in terms of this sustainability discussion there are four main concepts that we're gonna that we believe are important and we're gonna bring those ideas hopefully to district 220 the first one being the renewable energy sources that are available and these renewable energy sources will use reliable efficient systems to aid in the daily operation of our buildings and provide us with additional sources of energy uh district-wide the next one the next
182objective is for grid independence which means that our district would not have to solely rely on our utility companies to support us in our utilities i bring this up because as i'm sure as uh as you've gone throughout your days you've seen the utilities yourselves have probably been increasing so this would just give us a little bit of a buffer on our utility increases that we're observing here as well grid independence is also helpful for extreme weather events so you might remember last year february of 2021 we had a massive pipe freeze in texas which was hurtful to our therms our gas services we were okay because we had contracts put in place but that's just another occurrence there additionally incorporating a sustainable system can be used in our district's curriculum so we can have
183hands-on learning experiences for our students and these projects can educate our students on the importance and functionality of green and renewable energy these three these three points are important but the fact that cost savings is also included in these measures and are associated are also making it more desirable to us so now we're going to move on and talk a little bit about a couple different options for sustainability that might be feasible in district 220 and keep in mind using less energy is always the best option however there are additional measures that we can take to aid in this process so to help us get started and understand about the different types of renewable energy generation types i'm going to reference one of the best bands from the late 70s which is earth wind and
184fire and i guess they're distant cousin water so the four main generation tactics being used today in the sustainable fields are geothermal systems wind turbines solar and hydroelectric geothermal using the earth's core temperature to both heat and cool our buildings wind turbines using wind energy to power our systems solar using the sun to power our systems and hydroelectric using water sources to power our systems these are all great options but some of the options might not be viable for our district for example district 129 in west aurora installed four geothermal systems at their schools however these processes can be expensive and also require a lot of land and for a suburban area like us might not be as feasible wind turbines same thing good idea if you have the space suburban areas like us again
185probably wouldn't make too much sense exactly and unfortunately i don't think we're gonna be putting any hydroelectric systems over in flint creek across the street another option that we might have that's possible for our district is the incorporation of a battery so the main idea behind battery systems is to house additional energy on site for times during emergency use or when energy demands and associated costs are high so similar to the generation side there are a couple choices when it comes to storage like using kinetic energy in a flywheel to maintain an energy system however the method that would make most sense for our district is the use of chemical storage through the use of a battery so now that we've decided now that we've discussed what the options might be let's take a look
186at some of the systems that might be feasible for our district and to do to do this we're first going to inform you on some of the work that we've already been doing in district with our district wide energy program so back in 2015 you guys you guys might remember that we hired a third party company to do our energy management program so since that their contract has terminated and as dave mentioned earlier we hired mark as our energy specialist because the program is important to the district so there's been a lot of work that's continued since that third party source was in district and mark has done a great job scheduling our hvac systems and our lighting monitoring our utility usage as well as working on utility sourcing contracts so mark's going to go
187through some of those uh achievements uh so back in 2015 of april was when this program started just to be better consumers of our energy and find ways to save on our utility costs so in the data provided above for utility cost and utility usage the observed savings would have otherwise otherwise been used for utility consumption and instead was able to be put toward the betterment of our students their through their education around the district as we look at our district as a whole before before you go there just uh note uh board the amount of utility savings that we have is really significant really a couple years of powering our schools is what we've saved since this program went live i think that's really important for you and our community to understand and that's
188good it's good for the world we're using less and it's good for us in terms of cost savings that we're using less and that was through the hard work of all of our staff across the district to implement the guidelines and to be able to really focus on the day-to-day week-to-week basis on energy conservation so like i said as we look forward through our district solar seems to make the most sense so uh previously mentioned the other sources and generation might not be as feasible for our district so let's talk about what solar might look like in district 220 so the just the description description and the program or the picture that you have up here is just a very quick and easy sample of what solar does and how it works so the first
189process is taking the sun's light and absorbing it into the panels and converting it to dc current which is then gone through a through an inverter which converts it from dc to ac which is the usable electricity for our buildings in our homes and then the last step any additional energy that is not used in the buildings is then sent to the grid so in our case comed um yes we would still be connected to combat regardless of if a building is at 100 offset or not that's a program called net metering which basically sends that additional energy to the grid on any times that we have we're absorbing more energy like summer times when we have high peak sunlight to then also be used in winter time so if we're not producing as much
190during the winter time we can pull from the grid because it's used as kind of like a banking system all right and we get compensated for that for feeding the grid so we uh right here i have provided a couple examples of solar in other districts as you can see there's the huntley ground installation on the left and the glenbard east campus roof installation on the right other districts in our area have already completed installations for solar so this is not a new concept for school districts and we've done our own research to see what solar would look like at each of our schools and the initial assessment looks very positive so right here we've got three pictures for you again we've done assessments at all of our schools however we want to just give
191you a couple quick snapshots so we have one of barrington high school one of prairie middle school and one of lions elementary school and all of them like i said look very viable for solar board you might notice there's not necessarily solar panels everywhere on a roof it really depends on on how things look on the building uh but and these are not final in that we're recommending that solar installations look exactly like this this is a mock-up of what it it possibly might look like if we were moving forward with the solar install at these buildings so some buildings would have more coverage on the roof some a little bit less depending on the building so as we look forward at these systems and discuss whether or not it will work for our district
192financially there are a couple main points we want to discuss so the first one being system size and energy offset so this information is determined by the number of panels in the system and the efficiency of those panels so the combination of the two specs tells us not only how much of the building usage we have that will be offset by solar but also how much the system is going to cost the next one there are a couple options for owning a system or doing a couple agreement options so of those two the first one would be full ownership with the district by buying the system outright and the second option would be called a power purchase agreement or a ppa so we wouldn't have any upfront cost with a ppa however instead we would
193pay a third party company a discounted rate for our electricity that we produce so now i'm sure that as much as dave bond would love not paying for things uh you know the long-term savings of a ppa would be significantly less because we wouldn't have an upfront payment and instead that third-party company has to make a profit somehow the next one and the last piece of financial information uh and the reason why solar is viable right now for school districts like ours are the incentives that are currently available so the main one and the biggest one is called a solar renewable energy credit or s-rec and that's provided through the government as an incentive to go green they're through an adjustable block program right now uh which is somewhat time sensitive so as i see
194it and as i've heard recently the adjustable block program is going to be put on hold or just a pause for uh on july 1st and moving forward as they determine what the next aesthetic values are going to be so if we want to be moving forward with one of these projects we want to be one of the first in line to make sure we get those s truck projects in september um and no i'm not going to shoehorn another earthworm and fire joke in here so another one uh there are ins uh inverter rebates which is the next one on on the list and so in inverter rebate there are currently comet inverter rebates like i said that's that mechanical piece that transitions the dc energy into ac current usable for our buildings lastly
195there's also a 22 federal tax credit from the government for those that move forward with a solar project however we would not see that federal tax credit since we don't pay federal taxes and instead the third party that we went with if we did go forward with the ppa would instead instead receive that that federal tax credit so here are some numbers for our school district and to give you a rough idea on what the rough cost and estimated savings of purchasing this system would look like we provided barrington high school a combination of the two middle schools and our eight elementary schools so for this data just for your knowledge mw means megawatts the offset of the middle schools and the elementary schools have been averaged for convenience and then the rebates and the
196incentives shown are a combination of the s-rex we talked about and the comet incentive we would also like to note that some of the elementary schools in our initial assessment did show viability for uh building offset of a hundred percent um if not a little bit better and by offset what that means is that we would be able to generate what percent of power we could generate through a solar array that we use in the building so 100 offset means we're able to generate 100 of the of the electric needs for that building on an on average basis and uh the last thing i want to note on this page is that the payback on these uh projects is fairly quick um if we were to choose to outright buy the system obviously there are
197some other considerations that we have to think about so things like installation location and timing so we'd have to think about roofs which roofs we want to put them on there are also in connection with the next bullet point their village ordinances uh we'd have to be mindful of the villages that were a part of certain ordinances will assist in determining these locations for example south barrington does not allow ground installations so that's something we'd have to keep in mind um the next one that says cost savings versus decarbonization this is kind of where we get to pick and choose what we want to do so are we trying to lean more towards cost savings are we leaning towards uh being more or better stewards of the environment so it's kind of something that we
198get to decide it could be a bit of both um and we just kind of have to choose where that sweet spot is going to be we're looking for the sweet spot the next one the comed energy buyback that's kind of what dave mentioned so comed will buy back any energy that we produce over 100 however again another consideration is we have to be mindful that during those winter months we have enough energy that we can pull from the grid um if we do need that during times where we're not producing as much and then obviously the last thing we'd have to do some engineering assessments of our buildings to make sure that our roofs are viable that we can put them there again we've talked about mentioned quickly ground installations if they're in ordinance
199does that work out with us and with our buildings so for the conclusion there are kind of four main pieces that we want to leave you with we are actively pursuing energy efficient systems and continuing with the current work that we're already producing and using around the district we believe that sustainability can be a large can play a larger role in district and upon our initial assessment so looks solar looks like a viable solution for for sustainability in our district and will allow us to continue to be good stewards of the environment while observing some additional cost savings and energy savings as well lastly oops sorry and lastly uh timing for this project and for solar in general is ideal at the moment because of the available uh incentives and the fact that we are
200also renovating some of the roof that we have around the district for our referendum and capital projects so a board there's a lot of information we want to give to you so this is a conversation that we started with the facilities committee and we want to bring that here in front of you for consideration and we think that one of the next steps is to try and get some direction from you obviously there are costs associated with this either in paying upfront for a system or in giving away savings that we would potentially accrue and benefit for this through a ppa um the you know if you're interested in us continuing to work on this um the first thing that we would do is engage in some engineering studies to make sure that we can
201come back with good proposals that would be reflective of what we we can do now mark has already spent a fair bit of time with a number of different vendors and walking our buildings and talking about what's feasible so we've got a pretty good idea but if we really wanted to get some firm uh from proposals we would need to do that step once we had formal proposals we'd have the opportunity to review those and come back to the board with a recommendation about how does this look um how do we fund it what's you know how does this all uh all play out um and at that time uh board if you're interested um you probably don't know this about mark but mark actually was the uh national award-winning lead for show choir when
202he was in high school and just recently won the karaoke contest on a cruise he was on so i'm sure that if we come back with a recommendation for the board we can probably get him to sing to a earth wind and cyrus fire song and maybe do a little dance so to go along with your tic-tac-toe there we go perfect [Laughter] oh samantha already recorded my tick-tock stuff so so um so with that um you would certainly um you know welcome any of the questions that you might have um or we would be happy to you know i understand it's getting late uh we did try to get through this in a pretty short period of time for you but we would we'd be happy to answer questions now if you want to think
203about it we'd be happy to respond um to other questions for you um as we uh seek your feedback how soon is the energy saving on the chart on page 15 that was my one question so the so when do we start to accrue energy savings they're big numbers sure you know so savings happen immediately so upon interconnection which is when we flip the switch and we turn the solar on so um we would observe that that offset immediately upon installation and upon energizing our system um and then the paybacks that were listed there i guess that's where more if we did outright buy the system that is the the payback time on when then we would be net green the system would be paid for and all of the energy savings would not be
204you know i guess refunding our money if that's a if that's how you want to place it and instead would be our pure energy savings okay so it's the years at the bottom of the paybacks right yeah so it's basically you know how like every year yeah how long until the savings have equaled the investment that we did up front and so when you get to that six seven eight years out we've we've recouped so if we were to fund this out of capital projects for example uh or through a bond issue for example it would take about that long before we would have recouped our investment now that payback is a basic calculation it doesn't take into account time value of money and some other things but but it gives you an idea about
205when the savings equal the investment and then everything after that as mark said any of those savings just accrue to the benefit of the district because we're no longer trying to recover our initial investment they're just pure savings on you know that benefit the district and it's a good question because as i mentioned there are two ways of of paying for the system you can either outright buy it which again once it's on our land if we out if we outright purchased it then it's ours and from there on out we don't have to pay anybody else once we hit that return investment everything forward is ours with a ppa usually you sign about a 20-year contract 25-year contract and you don't own the system so after that contract is over the company will come
206out and either remove the panels or you sign another contract with them for another 20 25 years or they'll give you the option to outright buy the system at that point and you're buying it at market value so um solar panels at as they're said right now anywhere between 30 and 40 years however they keep getting extended because the panels that were produced 30 or 40 years ago are still working so but they lose efficiency correct yeah i think the average is about 0.05 per panel per year so they do degrade um and obviously the technology is increasing every day but for the most part longevity is pretty good on on solar panels there's no maintenance for solar panels which is nice there's no moving parts so we wouldn't have to be changing out any
207gears or anything like that rain and snow are natural cleaners for the panels anyways so it's kind of just place it let it sit you might have to change out an inverter here and there maybe a panel here and there but pretty much you kind of plug and play and let it say you mentioned that that some of the elementary schools might have 100 offset is is the 56 that's on slide 15 the average across all of them so some of them must have 20. correct so in our initial assessment most of the schools if not all the schools have have viability for solar so like you said there are some that are lower however any solar is good solar right um basically the return on investment even that payback is average to about 8.3
208but most of them that we saw were anywhere between five six years to eight maybe nine years the highest ones being an offset of about 100 percent if not more and the lowest ones just depending on roof pitch roof direction uh size of the roof shape and all that stuff is what depends on on how many panels we could put there and what the offset is so given the fact we're putting in all this money and we're doing a lot of roofs what happens if our roofs aren't compatible with solar is that possible or i mean there are we incur more costs if our roofs can't hold the amount of panels we need so there's that that's a great question that's where we would do the engineering study to determine where we can put these
209so you need to have the structural integrity and strength to be able to support the weight of panels so if for some reason there's portions of some roofs that it doesn't make sense and you even saw that on the mock-ups that we did where there are some we said this doesn't make any sense based on what we know already then that changes the size of the system that you would have we just wouldn't put them there when it's a great time to put solar panels on after you have done a roof replacement because now it can sit there for the life of the roof when you have to replace your roof you can remove the panels replace the roof reinstall the panels you're happier to do it right after you've done the roof because now
210you're putting out 20 plus years before you've got to do that again if you do it a few years before you replace your roof that sort of stinks because you just put them in now you gotta invest in the labor to take them out and then reinstall them yeah is it feasible to do some partially on the ground and some on the roof if it doesn't all fit absolutely absolutely so subject to village ordinance and then it's also a matter of what is the look and feel that we want of systems like that at our schools so that would certainly be at the discretion of the board if we to decide do we want to look at ground installs or not once you put a ground install in though that really limits your ability to
211use that space and to adjust in the in the future based on needs and a good addition to that is the initial assessments that i did in the pictures that you saw i asked the companies to only install on flat roofs and so what i did with that was to make sure that nobody could see them from the ground if that's you know something that some people are against is seeing the actual panels up on the roof so these numbers in my opinion are actually low because there are roofs south facing rivers are the most profitable and the best for solar because it's the most direct sunlight so um perfect example is the high school that i had would you be able to show the high school picture really quick so the high school obviously
212the front section of it um that's got south facing um on it so it on that one it is um and that would be obviously the best direction but there are some south facing roofs that don't have it so it's kind of we get that's where the considerations would come in on which rooms are we putting them on do we care if they're facing street views do we care if people can see them from the ground um do we want to put them on every roof that is visible or or not and just stay with the flat roofs that'll all be part of the other considerations this banking the unit banking now can you spread that to other buildings say we have a building that doesn't have a roof that works to do this can
213like the high school share their things with the elc sure i mean go ahead well so one of the other one of the other things that mark has looked at and we've had some conversations to talk about are how do you expand on energy sustainability and so there actually are thoughts around building sort of a mini network sort of like what we do with some of our internet connections where schools are connected in different ways same thing with power so that you can actually build i want i don't want to say the wrong phrase that's what i was going to say so micro grid that really does do some of that sharing among buildings well the other thing is if we've got over 100 offset in one building we're selling back to com ed you
214know from a district perspective if we're under somewhere else and as long as the cost works i it ends up being it can be about the same we just have to look at the investment costs of building a microgrid but part of what we have talked about is how do we make sure that a system that we would do would accommodate future expansion in different ways and that might be by the addition of a basa a battery energy storage system a micro grid you know if there's other technology that comes out what can we do that would plug in and allow us to leverage what we already have and build on it so those would all be considerations in anything that we would recommend i think this is really exciting i'm super excited it looks
215like great work we just talked about how our community is interested in this from all the work we've done so yay i hope it works ecological stewardship so are you looking for some direction tonight that was part of your next steps are you looking for us to say okay go do the site engineering study yes if the board's interested in us taking the next step um that you think hey this this is possible come back with you know really more hard and fast details and consideration around what it would really look like what the proposals are and options for funding and approaches then we'll take the next step on that we're not looking for you to commit funds to this right at this point in time so but we would do the next step and
216come back to you with additional information a little more concrete design options and proposals and refine that slide 15. yes so yeah with the with with the pictures absolutely as mark said that the the he's anticipating that the srec program will go on hold for a short period of time and open back up in september uh it's great to be at the front of the line because it is an allocation methodology so if we're taking the next step um board mark will actually be working on this uh probably starting tomorrow and we'll be looking to quickly come back to you over the next couple months with some information so some of that's going to depend on some of the partners that we would look at we've received some preliminary proposals from a number of companies
217there was one that stood out for reputation and cost that we think would be a likely candidate that we would uh we would really want to take the next step with uh but we would continue evaluating that and i think that over the next you know the next couple months we'd be coming back with options we would prep you so that it's not a you know we know how we'd like to get you bring you along with the process and not just drop it on you at one point and say okay well now you need to make a multi-million dollar decision so we would look to be able to try and get information as soon as possible and um and be able to move this along so that we can make a timely decision as
218appropriate it could be potentially within the next couple of years we could be making a recommendation in the next next few months which would then lead to a project happening um shortly thereafter upon approval of the srec program so this could be something that could potentially be as early as next summer that there could be some work going on insulation during the school year or not probably probably best suited for the summer depending on how referendum projects are going we already mentioned the roof installations and things like that but there there shouldn't be any problem with with getting panels up onto roofs um the only thing i could think that might be an issue are craning issues um buildings and noise but um otherwise as a dangerous factor of installing during the school year i
219don't believe there should be any like i said minus the uh the operation of a crane if necessary which we we couldn't do while we've got people in the building will you listen to earth wind and fire as you start to study tomorrow [Laughter] are we good do we have four folks that oh sorry so i i just wanted to understand this terminology here on slide 10 it says total cost avoidance is that is that truly avoidance or is it actual savings yes so it is actually so so the the way that we that we do that is you take a look at what were the what was the energy consumption at at the time that we were starting that program and what were energy rates and where are we now and okay so so
220you you say if if we for example had a 10 reduction in our energy consumption times the cost of that power those are true savings that so we avoided that cost those are true savings to the district so it's pleasurable is what you're saying yes okay and that's also in combination with the contracts we signed with third-party vendors for our utilities where we get a discounted rate for both electric and gas yeah and we we did in fact adjust budgets lower based on energy consumption now next year is going to be a little different because as you know from your home bills um you know rates are starting to go up but we're protected on our contracts so but those are starting to come to an end so we're having conversations already about how do
221we extend those next time we extend it will be at a higher rate so there will be will be upcoming future budget impacts on that um if however we we move forward with solar and there's an offset that may well help mitigate that so the bit so the baseline was created over a 12-month trailing period before this initiative began is that right yes and then and so what we said was based on that run rate we're going to factor in what the incremental income increases in cost word per whether there's theorem or kilowatt hour and apply it to the number of redux reduction in those various metrics over the over the subsequent periods correct and does the savings take into account what we pay the consultant to or no the um i would have to
222go back and take a look at at that i think that we had those savings as pure utility costs um we did have the cost for synergistic that the district incurred um i tell the truth i have to go back in and double check that steve against the you know that was prior to my start in the district as to how that was what the conversations were and how that was planned that may well have been um the intention may have been just to use the savings to cover that cost we did have the option to extend that contract which was going to be at a you know they weren't looking for a big revenue reduction but we had negotiated at the time a perpetual license to their software um and so then we just
223needed to make sure that we had a staff member who's helping to manage that much like we had assigned with synergistic programs and then and i help me understand the program the program was just um what's where your process changes not necessarily like investing in you know automatic turn uh light shut off systems correct it wasn't anything like that for example primarily people people um which is an ongoing effort including audits that mark does in walking facilities managing schedules for when we we have air conditioning on or heat on you know across the building working on equipment assessing equipment condition repair and replacement so diagnosing some of those we actually have sort of an uncaptured benefit with our maintenance team because of the work that mark does that actually assists a much quicker identification and
224repair for equipment within our buildings uh that are our hvac technicians would you know do on a regular basis so um so that that is the bulk of what what we have done so no so i guess my question is no other facility investments are made like you said smart timers or smart you know light switches anything like along those lines i i think i don't know if there's been anything on any district-wide basis that we've done although we we have done some like com ed we've had some comment programs we that we've taken advantage of yeah so i've i've brought in some teams from comed and from nicor just for incentives and things like that so we've gone around the district we've done for water assessments you know changing out taps that are more
225efficient lighting fixtures we're actually going through with the referendum right now and getting money from comed with incentives for uh the referendum that we're getting back on stuff that we were upgrading anyways right um so we're getting incentives on different pieces like that um but as for timers and things we do have astronomical timers around the district but it's not necessarily stuff that we bought from this program or anything most of the stuff that's done is through our hvac scheduling which i do from our computer and working with all the schools on scheduling on when they have people in the building um when it's occupied and when people will be out and i guess along with that is also we're not like investing in i don't know fluorescent bulbs versus your typical uh i've got
226what it's called leds yeah thank you yeah so we're not even paying more for balls that will last longer and use less energy right so right and so what we would love to do is larger re-lamping projects i would love to see timers in all of our bathrooms a variety of other places that automatically turn off we've we've not had i don't i would say the funds available that we think that have been that has been the highest and best use at this point in time but i think those are future opportunities for us to be able to continue to be good stewards and to promote energy sustainability okay and through the referendum work um there is an objective anywhere we're replacing fixtures through common areas um restrooms things like that we are replacing with
227led fixtures as well as occupancy sensors and all of those areas like bathrooms and common areas classrooms oh that's great thanks and then on slide 15 i just want to make sure so for the middle schools and elementary schools those are per school figures correct it's an average so the the first number where it's the 1.2 megawatts for the middle school and 0.7 megawatts for the elementary school those are actually the combined uh of sizes of all of the schools so the two middle schools they're roughly about 600 kilowatts the elementary schools can range from 45 kilowatts to i think like 100 and something kilowatts so those are the numbers there the offset was the average so for the two middle schools i think one was in the low 50s one was near 60 and
228then the elementary schools the offset like i said some seemed viable for about some were a little bit lower lower near the 20s uh maybe even 30s um so those those were the numbers that were at right let me clarify it's not going to be a 1.8 million investment for all the middle or elementary schools it's a 1.8 million eight million investment per elementary school for all elementary schools oh really it is for all oh you got smaller buildings think about that okay okay yeah and then those numbers are cumulative for all buildings together all the elementary schools both middle schools and all of the elementaries okay got it and then again baseline is now savings established based on what we have as our rates today or was this study done some because i think
229you know as you know there's been a lot of fluctuation in energy prices just the last three months so i i did my assessment pre-covered because for covid we had uh dialed back our hvac settings because nobody was in our buildings initially at the start of 2022 um and so we had um some energy savings that on our utility bills would not be realistic for a normal school-day setting so that's a great point i actually should have asked that question earlier too that's what i was thinking so much of that savings between i think it was april 15 and june of this year right so i guess this month i mean how much of that was from contributing we did bring back students last year though so that and also and there were other coveted
230mitigations that i had to abide by so uh since students were back in the building actually since teachers were back in the building i've had to run our buildings four hours extra a day two hours before and two hours after occupancy um for flushing periods so making sure that the area air circulation that the air has been flushed out two hours before any any space in district is occupied we run it for the time that it's occupied and then two hours after any space is occupied to flush all air which drove up our our energy consumption so and it actually does average out pretty well so the savings that we did see during covid when we were not in the building has kind of leveled off for when we were and now these mitigations have
231uh caused us to run our buildings longer than we normally have to okay okay um awesome yeah thank you awesome awesome so i think we've got we've got we're going to give them to be able to move forward right move it get lots of thumbs up okay um any you guys can look at the agenda items is there anything you'd like to add to the agenda we've got a couple actions approved the 220 documents we just talked about paper bid first reading board policy uh update on academic achievement and sel and a demo on the new district website do we have a um motion to approve the confidential closed session minutes don't move second i'm sorry before we go there i thought we said after public comment that we would consider adding some discussion or
232even based on some of the questions that were brought up these are quite a few questions brought up that i guess we're not prepared to address today so dr hunt said he would take those questions and get them answered and share with us and he'll share it with us if we've still got questions then let me know is that something that we can share with the community then in a in a in a distribution because i do think these are not just questions that are isolated to these you know seven folks who were six folks who shared a public comment maybe we can ask dr hunt to include some of this in his update yeah yes okay that's fair thank you since the framework 220 documents are an action item and we had a little
233bit of discussion we're adding things is it possible to get that a little bit before we said we were good he's going to put it in thursday oh thank you okay i blame the time yep yeah so this so this coming thursday put it in a thursday and then we are going to have that that week and then we'll vote on it perfect thank you for the okay so i i can't remember do we have a first and a second on the yes we did okay but i did not get a second exactly you okay thank you all right so roll call angela wilcox yes aaron chan ding yes steve wang yes leah collister lazari yes katie carrum sandra bradford yes barry l schuler yes all right do we have a motion to adjourn all
234in favor all right thank you you
