At this time, I'd like to thank our senior class. You have been an outstanding class. You have been great role models for our younger students in the building. Please give them a round of applause. Class of 2026, it has been a tremendous journey. Please give your parents and guardians a tremendous round of applause for supporting you. At this time, I'd like to call forward our superintendent of schools,
Dr. Marshan Warren. [clears throat] Good morning. It is an honor and a privilege to stand before you today as we celebrate the graduating class of 2026. Graduates, you are stepping into a world filled with possibility, purpose, and opportunity. Your high school experience has prepared you not only academically, but personally, building your resilience, character, and vision for the future. Whether your next step is military service, college, or entering the workforce, each path is valuable because each of you is valuable. Our society depends on the contributions of people from every walk of life. And the world needs your voice, your passion, and your willingness to make a difference. As you move forward, remember to be grateful for the parents, guardians, teachers, and loved ones who supported you along the way. Their encouragement helped build the foundation for
your success. Most importantly, believe in yourself and your ability to achieve your goals. Success is never accomplished alone. So, build relationships, seek mentors, and collaborate with others. As you walk through new doors of opportunity, remember to hold those doors open for people who will follow behind you. Class of 2026, you are gifted, prepared, and deeply needed. Congratulations and best wishes on the journey ahead. I also have the honor of recognizing or providing special recognitions. Today, we honor and recognize the retiring staff of Belleville West and District 2011. These individuals have given tirelessly to the Belleville West and District 2011 family. Their expertise and commitment to Belleville West and the community has been greatly appreciated. I would like to recognize our retirees. In an effort to recognize the highest academic achievement of students at Belleville West, we have developed a program to honor students earning a GPA of 4.0 and higher. These students are identified by wearing different colored stoves. Students are also wearing different color cards for the National Honor Society, Student Council, Running Start, State Scholars, National Merit Scholars, Harambe Department Honor Societies, and AVID, as well as various medals they have earned during their high school career. The exceptional students who
have maintained a 5.0 0 GPA. Sumakumladi will now deliver the class farewell. Ladies and gentlemen, class of 2026, please welcome the representatives from Suma Kumlad, Adam Bilzing, Mason Blair, Nolan Blair, Thomas Frame, Elena Gardert, [applause and cheering] >> [applause] >> Good morning. My name is Adam Bilzing. For our 2026 Suma Kumlad commencement speeches, we chose to frame the past four years through movie and TV show quotes. Each one of our speakers will incorporate a line into their speech from a movie or television show and build off the meaning behind it. So to begin, I am reminded of a quote from Harry Potter. It's not our abilities that show us what we truly are. It's our choices. Throughout these four years, we have proven that we have the ability to succeed. But the diplomas we receive
today don't define our potential for the future. our decisions do. Every choice you make from here on out is a reflection of the person you can and will be. So, choose to keep going and never hold back from reaching your goals. Everyone sitting here today is deserving of their achievements. It is and is truly capable of so much more. Go choose your own unique path. But first, let's hear from Mason Blair. Hello. When when reaching your goals, don't lose sight of where you are today. As Andy Bernard from the office once said, "I wish there was a way to know that you're in the good old days before you actually left them." And standing up here today, I realized we're living in the good old days right now. Everyone is always looking towards the future,
leading us to Mr. Now, so class 2026, cherish the good old days while you're still in them. This journey we are on now contains my cousin Nor who shows us why the ride is just important as the destination. [applause] Even though these good old days are coming to an end like we always knew they would, we can still soak up these last moments. [clears throat] As I stand here today, I'm reminded of a quote from the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Because even if you know how something's going to end, that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the ride. We all knew that this would end. It's high school. We knew it would only last four years. We knew everything would eventually come to a halt. But that didn't make it any less significant.
We didn't spend these years wishing it would stop. We spent them filling the time in between. We chose to make the best of every season, every late night, every win. [clears throat] So wherever you go next, don't just look at the end goal. Remember to make the journey worth it. To understand who is with us on this journey, we now turn to Thomas Frank. who supports us on this journey is a message vital to maintaining our relationships. Nothing is more uplifting than having multiple loved ones support every step of our journey. However, these essential people are only the supports to the tower of our lives. Don't think, just do. This quote from Miles Teller and Top Gun Maverick establishes that once opportunity is presented, we must strive for it. Chances leave us vulnerable and nervous
about the future. But it is those risks that bring us above the rest. Take that opportunity to improve the world. To learn how to start making that change, please welcome Ellie Ger. All of us have opportunities to improve the world around us. In the words of Officer Judy Hops from Zootopia, "Life's a little bit messy. No matter what kind of animal you are, change starts with you." As we prepare to step out into the world, each of us has a different path ahead. No matter where you go or what you do, you have the power and the responsibility to make meaningful change in your community. As you move through life, ask yourself, "How can I leave this better than I found it? How can I make someone's life just a little bit easier? Because I
promise there is something you can do and it will be noticed and make a difference. As we leave West, remember that it is our choices, not just our abilities, that define us. Cherish these good old days while enjoying the ride of the journey itself rather than racing toward the end. When opportunities arise, don't think, just do. And always remember that change starts with you. I hope these reflections inspire you to make a lasting positive impact on your community in this next chapter. Congratulations, class of 2026. [applause] graduates, families, faculty, and friends. Look over your shoulder for a moment. Just a quick glance. That's what the rear view mirror is for, isn't it? a necessary tool, but one you only check for a second to know you have been and what's behind you. In the months
and years ahead, your time here will recede into the rearview mirror. This chapter, which once consumed your entire life, will become a smaller and smaller part of the road you are traveling. And like a driver, you will have a choice. You can wonder what's behind you, or you can keep your eyes on the wide, expansive road ahead, your future. Here are three things to remember as you drive forward. Your past is your perspective, not for living. We all make mistakes coming through high school. Some of us have all failed a test, missed a deadline, or maybe even gotten fired by our best friend. But just as every plan looks good in the rearview mirror, we sub celebrate the success without always showing the winding, messy road that got us there. Remember these moments, but don't
dwell on them. They were lessons. They gave you grit and determination. They are the armor that will protect you from the next bump in the road. So glance back, appreciate how far you have come, and keep moving. Your windshield is bigger than your rearview mirror. As you leave here today, you will have more control over your path than ever before. Your choices will no longer be dictated by a syllabus. The path ahead may seem hazy and even a little scary, but remember what you learned in driver's ed. The windshield is a lot wider than the rear view mirror. The future is a lot larger and more important than the past. Embrace this uncertainty. It's time of hope, fear, accomplishments, all rolled into one. And by embracing it, you will uncover and develop the true wonderful
self that's been waiting to emerge. Lastly, someone is always watching in the mirror. Look in the mirror again and don't see the past. See those who look up to you. Maybe it's a sibling just starting their journey or a younger student who sees you as an example. As you forge your own path, keep an eye on those who follow. They will witness your triumphs and your failures. Show them what it looks like to be bold, to be resilient, and to keep going even when things don't go as planned. Today marks the end of one chapter and starts a new one. So turn your gaze forward. Openly embrace the future with wisdom you have gained and courage to take risk. Go forth and write a new bold story. Congratulations class of 2026. Now go full speed
ahead. My name is Coley Copper and I am your senior class president. I just want to say congratulations to all of you for making it to this point in your life. We did it and we did it well. Standing
here as your senior class president is something I'm very grateful to do because this moment is different for each one of us. But yet, we're doing it together. We spent four years counting down the days till this moment. And now it feels kind of weird to be here. We didn't just grow up here. We became a part of who we are here. From the first day of freshman year trying to find your classes without being tardy to senior year knowing exactly where your classes are, but choosing to be tardy. And somehow between all of that, we learned, we grew up, and we lived. All those things didn't happen at once, but in small moments. Through the friendships you've made, the challenges you've overcome, and the memories you will never forget. Before we all go our
separate ways, and high school becomes just a distant memory, I have a few things for you to remember. Take chances. You only get to do this once. Do things for yourself because at the end of the day, it's your life. and never forget where you came from. In all seriousness, I'm proud to say, class of 2026, we made it. And that's something no one can ever take away from us. But this is just the beginning. The world doesn't need us to be perfect. It needs us to be bold, to take chances, and to become everything we're capable of. So go out there and make a difference. Thank you and congratulations. [cheering] >> [applause] >> Ladies and gentlemen, please remain seated. And now we will have the recessional for Belleville West class of 2026. Thank you
all for joining us today. >> [cheering] >> Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Heat. Hallelujah. Heat. Heat. Hallelujah. Heat. Heat. Wow. Come here. >> [cheering] >> Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Before we move forward, I'd like to thank this senior class. You have been awesome this year. You have been a tremendous role models for our younger students in the building. Please give them a round of applause. And because of that, class of 2026, you have not gotten this far without the support of your support staff, your parents, guardians, and friends. Please give them a round of applause. At this time, it is now my pleasure to introduce Khloe Deets, student council president, who will give the senior proclamation. [applause] Good morning, parents and guests. And for the last time, good morning, maroons. As much as I wish this were a thriving Thursday or
a winning Wednesday, we're in uncharted territory. I guess it's a spectacular Saturday. But before any special announcements, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Chloe Deetsz and I've had the honor of serving as the executive student body president this past year. When the 8:30 bell rang on Tuesday, it marked the beginning of our final announcements, the first of many lasts in a routine we have followed for four years. Hearing the date May 12th over the speaker made it real. It meant the end of something familiar and the start of something unknown. That feeling was a mix of excitement, sadness, and a little bit of nerves. So, take the picture, soak up every moment when everyone you know is just 5 to 15 minutes away. And do not rush past what it means to
be the class of 2026 because we only get this for a little while longer. >> [applause] >> At this time, I would like to call forward our superintendent of schools, Dr. Marshon Warren. Please welcome the representatives from Suma Klad, Chloe Deetsz, Bren Flannery Melson, Jay Naylor, Isabella Fifer, Morgan Seagull. For our 2026 Sumakum LA commencement speeches, we chose to frame the past four years through movie and TV show quotes. Each one of our speakers will incorporate a line into their speech from a movie or TV show and build off the meaning behind it. Growing up, my journey was guided by Barbie because she could be anything. a software engineer, a tennis player, a teacher, or even the president. Barbie may not be everyone's past, present, or future
like mine. But the idea that someone can choose their own path is something we all can relate to. I think that's why her story resonates with so many people because it reminds us that we are all still growing into who we're meant to be. As the class of 2026 leaves Bubble West, our paths will all look different. But that's the most exciting part because if Barbie can be anything, we can be anything. Now, as we reflect on growing into who we're meant to be, I would like to welcome Bin Flannry Melson. Learning who we are meant to be, as Chloe said, This is what high school is all about. If these four years were a 2000's teen movie, we would currently be in the final montage. Hopefully with better hair and less awkward moments in
the parking lot. But before the credits roll, remember the wisdom of Patrick Verona. Don't ever let anyone make you feel like you don't deserve what you want. That goes for your career goals, your happiness, and yes, your right to be just well. People might tell you your dreams are too loud or that you're being difficult, but if high school taught us anything, it's that staying true to yourself, even if it's a grand musical gesture in the bleachers, is what actually matters. Go out there, be bold, and never be reigned in. As you prepare to face the world and stay true to ourselves, let's also remember the support of our community that lifted us up. Next, it's my honor to introduce Jay Naylor. [applause] While we're about to become parts of different communities, I want you
to think about the community we've created at West. I'm reminded of a quote from the 1987 comedy Space Balls. You're looking at now. Everything that happens now is happening now. Space Balls is one of the best comedies in my opinion. Definitely watch if you haven't. As our lives pick up postgraduation and reach a ludicrous speed, I hope that all of us can remember our time at West. the friends and memories we made and the things we were a part of. Remember the now as you have it now. Look around and see the friends next to you and realize we all have made it here. That's what's happening now. As we cherish the now and the community we've created, let's remember that our next step is an adventure waiting to happen. It is my honor to
introduce Isabella Feffer. [cheering] [applause] As you all look at the friends next to you, I remember walking into West on my first day and having absolutely no idea what I was doing. And I'm sure many of you relate, but we still figured it out by just doing it anyway. As the Cheshire Cat said in Alice in Wonderland, "Every adventure requires a first step." I think we can all agree that the best memories weren't the planned parties, the dances, or even the Friday night football games. Rather, the best memories came from all the spontaneous adventures that fell between, like the random Target trips or going to Denny's until 2 a.m. Looking ahead, none of us truly know what our future holds. And if I'm being honest, I think we're all a little scared. Just remember to
do it anyway. This new chapter of our life will lead to so many more adventures and memories. All you have to do is take the first step. As we prepare to take the jump into our next chapter, it is my honor to introduce Morgan Seagull. [applause] Some of the best adventures and memories of life are unplanned. Spontaneous hangouts, heat of the moment ideas, finding something at Target you never knew you needed. But jumping head first into life without knowing what comes next is kind of scary. And today is the day that we take that jump. In the show Adults, my favorite character Paul Baker says, "You don't need to have a five-year plan. You just need to survive until Tuesday, then make a plan for Wednesday." So, class of 2026, it's okay if you don't
have your life figured out. Let's just try and make it to Tuesday. Then we can worry a little as we leave west. Remember that it is our choices, not just our abilities that define us. Cherish these good old days while enjoying the ride of the journey itself rather than just racing towards the end. When opportunities arise, don't think, just do. And when always remember that change starts with you. I hope these reflections inspire you to make a lasting positive impact on your community in this next chapter. Congratulations, class of 2026. [cheering] [applause] >> [cheering] >> All right, graduates, families, faculty, and friends, look over your shoulder for a moment. Just a quick glance. That's what the rear view mirror is. It is a privilege to stand before you today as we celebrate the
graduating class of 2026. Graduates, you are stepping into a world filled with possibility, purpose, and opportunity. Your high school experience has prepared you not only academically, but personally, building your resilience, character, and vision for the future. Whether your next step is military service, college, or entering the workforce, each path is valuable because each of you are valuable. Our society depends on the contributions of people from every walk of life. And the world needs your voice, your passion, and your willingness to make a difference. As you move forward, remember to be grateful for the parents, guardians, teachers, and loved ones who supported you along the way. Their encouragement helped build the foundation for your success. Most importantly, believe in yourself and your ability to achieve your goals. Success is never accomplished alone. So, build relationships, seek
mentors, and collaborate with others. As you walk through new doors of opportunity, remember to hold those doors open for the people who will follow behind you. Class of 2026, you are gifted, prepared, and deeply needed. Congratulations and best wishes on your journey ahead. The National Honor Society, Student Council, Running Start, State Scholars, National Merit Scholars, Harambe, Departmental Honor Societies, and AVID, as well as various medals they have earned during their high school career. the exceptional students who have maintained a 5.0 GPA. Suma Kumlady, who will now deliver the class farewell. Ladies and gentlemen, class of 2026. Please welcome the representatives from
Suma Kumlady, Alexis Seagull, Hannah Sternau, Julia Stock, Henrik Stubberg, Gabrielle Zang. For our 2026 Sumakumla commencement speeches, we chose to frame the past four years through movie and TV show quotes. Each one of our speakers will incorporate a line into their speech from a movie or television show and build off the meaning behind it. Now, I personally love the show The Big Bang Theory, and the main character, Sheldon Cooper, once reflected, "It's a heart-wrenching realization that a place that once felt like home no longer does." Now, look, I was using my resources to prep for this speech, and Gemini swore that quote was from Sheldon. Turns out the AI lied to me, and Sheldon never said that. I have no idea who did, but I'm keeping it because Sheldon is right. Change can hurt. And
today, it means realizing that we've outgrown this place that we once called home. And that may sound like a tragedy, but really, it's a triumph. So, as you come up to receive your diploma, see it for what it really is, your permission to never stop growing. We now have the privilege of hearing from Hannah Sterno, who will share her thoughts on cherishing the memories we've made. Hello everyone. First, I want to start with a quote from Winnie the Pooh. How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard? Today we are moving on from the people and places that we've once called home. If today were easy, it would mean that these past four years didn't matter. But saying goodbye today is hard because the friendships and the memories we have made
actually meant something. So don't be sad it's over. Be grateful that you got the opportunity to experience something so special that it hurts a little to leave behind. Take a second to enjoy this moment. You've earned it. Congratulations. Now, I'm going to pass the mic off to Julia Stock, who's going to help us move past the moment to address what lies ahead. As we take a second to enjoy this moment, we are lucky to have had this experience and these friends in high school. You probably remember hearing from dozens of people that your time in high school is the most formative time of your life. That you figure out what you are and what you're going to be for the rest of your life. Personally, I find the sentiment very overwhelming. So, I look to
one of my favorite books turn movie, The Outsiders. Johnny tells Pony Boy, "You still have a lot of time to make yourself be what you want. There's lots of good in the world. Now remember now that you always have the potential to grow and if you put your mind to it, there's nothing you can't do. To talk about facing the challenges ahead, please welcome Henrik Stubberg to the stage. I would agree that we are all feeling a little overwhelmed here today. But I also truly believe that the support each of us have received from our friends, family, and faculty have has helped us prepare for our next chapter. In the movie Miracle, legendary coach Herb Brook said, "Great moments are born from great opportunity, and that's what you have here today." Class of 26, that's
what we have earned here today. So when you see that next opportunity arise, make sure to go out there and take it. Finally, Gabrielle Zang joins us to reflect on the next steps we will take and the choices that lie before us. Graduation isn't just about completing our journey and finishing school. It's about deciding who we want to become. We're all going in different directions, but we all have the same opportunity to live fully, to take chances, and to not waste the time we've been given. Time is the one thing we can't get back. So don't wait for the perfect moment to start your life. That moment is now. Wherever you go after today, I hope you remember one thing. Don't just settle for a life that works. As Robin William once said in Dead
Poet Society, make your life extraordinary. The world is waiting for only you can offer. So carry your unique voice and everything we learned these four years into every room you enter. As we leave West, remember that it is our choices, not just our abilities, that define us. Cherish these good old days while enjoying the ride of the journey itself, rather than just racing toward the end. When opportunities arise, don't think, just do. And always remember that change starts with you. I hope these reflections inspire you to make a lasting positive impact on your community in this next chapter. Congratulations, class of 2026. graduates, family, faculty, and friends. Look over your shoulder for a moment. Just a quick glance. That's what the rearview mirror is for, isn't it? a necessary tool, but one you only check
for a second to know where you have been and what's behind you. In the months and years ahead, your time here will recede into the rearview mirror. This chapter, which once consumed your entire life, will become a smaller and smaller part of the road you're traveling. And like a driver, you have a choice. You can wonder what's behind you, or you can keep your eyes on the wide, expansive road ahead, your future. Here are three things to remember as you drive forward. Your past is for perspective, not for living. We've all made mistakes coming through high school. Some of us have failed a test, missed a deadline, or maybe even gotten fired by our best friend. But just as every plan looks good in the rearview mirror, we celebrate success always showing the winding, messing
road that got us there. Remember these moments, but don't dwell on them. They were lessons. They gave you grit. They gave you determination. They are the armor that will protect you from the next bump in the road. So glance back, appreciate how far you have come and keep moving. Second, your windshield is bigger than your rearview mirror. It is a time of hope, fear, and accomplishment
all rolled into one. And by embracing it, you will uncover and de develop the truly wonderful self that's been waiting to emerge. Last, someone is always watching in the mirror. Look in the mirror again and don't just see the past, see those who look up to you. Maybe it's a sibling just starting their journey or a younger student who sees you as an example. As you forge your own path, keep a eye on those who follow. They will witness your triumphs and your failures. Show them what it looks like to be bold, to be resilient, and to keep going even when things don't go as planned. Today marks the end of one chapter and start of a new one. So turn your gaze forward. Only embrace the future with the wisdom you've gained and the
courage to take risks. Go forth and write a new bold story. Congratulations class of 2026. Now move ahead.
