001e e e yep good all right we move back into Open Session can everyone please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible liberty and justice for all all right does anybody have anything to add to the agenda can I please have a motion to approve the agenda second Ash and Joe yes yeser yes yes yes academic Spotlight Mr Gold all right I'm going to welcome up the elementary PE team Dr bian colana come on up okay good evening um this year in our physical education program we've made significant strides in promoting student health teamwork and lifelong Fitness habits our students have engaged in a variety of activities from traditional Sports to Innovative
002fitness challenges fostering um not only physical skills but also social connections and resilience um we emphasize the importance of mental health alongside physical fitness ensuring a comprehensive approach to student well-being primary objective of the program is to equip students with the necessary skills and confidence to independently navigate and resolve conflicts so Mr bab and Miss Miller are going to to share with you a little bit about the PE program and how they're expansive of uh curriculum uh will be incorporating more diverse activities such as outdoor adventure sports to cater to interests of all skill levels so I'll introduce Mr bab and Mrs Miller hi I'm Miss Miller this is Mr bab um there's just a couple of things that we've done so far in PE um we're bringing back some of the uh parachute old
003school stuff that we haven't done in a little while um some new things that Mr bab brought to us from his school where he came from in Wyoming um we have some Rhythm some drum fit on the bottom um cup stacking this year we've been doing this for several years now um we have our stack of pla event that we uh do one of our community events had a good turnout this year with a lot of uh lot of parents that came and stacked with the kids um we do that for about about a week in class and then um we'll bring it back again the kids stack for for time and um we have records so they come back for year to year and see how they improved um as years go on um's
004so right he what you're looking at is um it's called human Checkers kid in the red jersey is it and every time uh the tone beeps if you get in the same hoop as a kid you're out another thing we're working on are Cooperative games so the kids are working together to achieve uh directives here if you flip the cone and you land it upright you go steal a ball from another Kola hoop um working on cardiovascular endurance just having a lot of fun this one one of my favorite things is Invasion games so Invasion games would be like basketball hockey soccer games that are back and forth and so we're teaching here we're teaching our um third graders about um tactics and strategies for going down scoring on a goal and then also coming
005back and playing defense and the transition that happens in between we created something called the dubs wall so when kids win our in-class tournaments dubs stands for w or a win we take their team photo we're gonna hang them up in the hallway and this is just a way to kind of celebrate Excellence um kids are really excited this is from our cup stacking I had never done this before i' never cup stacked this is a big deal at Big Hollow I learned a lot I learned a lot this year about cup stack another invasion game so the kids were supposed to run around the circle and then they enter through the gate the child in the middle it's their job to defend uh the bucket and if anyone is able to take the item
006off of the bucket then they win if you get tagged with pool noodle you leave the arena and the next kids come in and then this one was new to me this year too this is called drum fit and so what it is it's kind of a synchronized lesson there's music and there's a video the kids have to move in tandem uh working on movement patterns cooperation um and it was neat it was fun part music class Part B that's us that's what we've been doing so some of our uh Department events so you said we have sack pla uh Family Fitness night coming up in February um we have a PE idea share coming up in February that's our uh next Institute day where we host I think it's over 50 teachers coming this
007year PE teachers from around the area and we get together and um share ideas things that we're uh that we were doing at our schools we're bringing back Field Day this year second through fourth grade uh third and fourth grade this year we're bringing on a bowling field trip after we do our in school um bowling unit um and this year we've had um several opportunities to host um after school programs open gyms things like that that we'll continue to do throughout the year I think they kind of they kind of skimmed over the idea share I want to let you know I've never talked to the board about this they they do really rk4 PE is a model program for the area and schools they get teachers coming from all over that come for
008a day and spend time in our gyms and they show them all the things that they do and there's some idea sharing happening but I think they're modeling after what those guys are doing so you're doing a great job sure very cool it's not listed in the slides do we have more okay it's not listed in the slides but one of the things that we're moving to is what's called The Weekend Warrior and it's going to be once a month once a quarter a host an event where we meet the kids at a location in the community on a Saturday for riding bikes or going on a hike or just trying to get them the Volo bog uh just some of the things that are available to us that we can include as part of
009our curriculum outside of the walls of our classroom it's awesome very cool thank you very much thank you accomplishment recognition Mr Gold think Miss mullen's G to come up and start us off thank you I'm excited to announce that our primary student of the month is Elena Elena can you come on up and Miss jany is g to come up as well [Applause] so I just wanted to share a few words about Miss Elena um she represents what it means to be a big Hollow star she comes to school each day with a big smile on her face and a positive attitude she's such a ray of sunshine um she works hard throughout the day and always puts forth her best effort Elena is a kind and caring friend to her peers her goal for
010the new year is to help someone every day I thought that was very sweet and so far she has been keeping up with that resolution um she is a trustworthy responsible and respectful student and I am very proud of her and so lucky to have her in my class this year so congratulations G to get a picture right here have you stand right look right there drul and Dr Bean colana okay well I am very excited to introduce Miss Ella ax who is our elementary student of the month so Ella kamana and then her teacher Mrs Lancaster who nominated [Applause] Ella I'm just gonna share a few words of why I nominated Miss Ella here um she is one of the most enthusiastic and positive Learners I have ever encountered at Big Hollow um she's
011got a great growth mindset she always wants to learn she's so brave and not worried about making a mistake because she knows she can learn from it um and she shares that with her peers by encouraging them and Al always supporting them um she shows respect in all parts of the day and she always reminds hers to do the same she's a great friend we had a new student who came in and Ella stepped up and became her friend and a go-to person and we chose one words for our 2025 resolutions this year one word that we were going to try to live for the year and Ella was very thoughtful and reflect reflective and said she chose the word practice and when I asked her why she said well I want to get better
012at everything I do and the only way I can do that is to practice and with football and math yes you did I thought you were did practice oh I made a mistake enthusiasm well same thing both but I thought we t talked about practicing all right well practice too yeah sometime sorry but she's also very enthusiastic and she's going to continue to be so and be a positive influence on her friends so that is Ella and I'm very honored to nominate her [Applause] Mr corma all right so we had a tie for our building for this month so we actually have two student of the month winners we have Arena trania and parvarti come on up H stay up I'm gonna embarrass you by saying all the nice things that your teachers had to
013say about you all right so about Arena this is what was written I Believe by Mrs swierski on behalf of the sixth grade team I would like to nominate Arena cha for student of the month arena is a true gem in our sixth grade class while she may be quiet in demeanor her positive attitude and dedication to learning are truly inspiring Arena consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic she is always prepared for class maintains a neat and organized workspace and consistently provides outstanding examples of her work arena is not only focused on her own success but is also a valuable asset to her peers she willingly assists classmates who are struggling with Concepts demonstrating kindness and patience Beyond her classroom work Arena consistently goes the extra mile she often completes extra work on her own
014time time driven by a genuine desire to deepen her understanding and expand her skills this dedication to learning sets a wonderful example for her classmates arena is a kind respectful and conscientious student who comes to school each day eager to learn she's a true role model for her peers and a valuable member of our class I highly recommend arena for District student of the month and this is what pva's teachers had to say about her parva is a role model for her peers she goes above and beyond the school expectations of being safe responsible and respectful she participates in class comes prepared and is willing to help other students she is a leader in class and takes ownership of her learning she often asks for more challenging assignments in her classes especially math she was
015elected seventh grade choir president this year and writes all of the scripts for each concert she is an active member of njhs and also a member of the principal Advisory Group and parva is a model student in the big Hall [Applause] community and Dr bian colana again so I'm really excited to be able to um announce Michelle Connelly as our employee of the month this is Michelle's second time um being honored as employee of the month so we'll also have Don Lucas come up who nominated her for this award and so both will need to come up [Applause] so I've had the honor of working with Michelle for many many many years um I've also had her son in my class before so I've known her for forever but uh Michelle goes above and beyond
016not only for her students but for her colleagues she puts her heart and soul into Big Hollow on a normal basis you will see here her here while before school starts and still here while after school is ended and a lot of times it's not for her to to work on her own stuff but to help others she naturally takes new teachers under her wing and is very realistic with them helping them helping to both encourage them and to give them constructive criticism in order to help them grow not only that but she notices when other teachers both new and seasoned are struggling here at school or in their own personal lives she takes the time to check in with them to make sure they're okay and to see if she can help in any
017way she is a natural leader Direct during school hours as well as our Union co-president she is fair realistic and honest when it comes to both I have watched students sore in her class and make a tremendous amount of growth she just knows what they need both academically and emotionally they know what her expectations are and how much she loves them her communication with parents is tap- Notch they are never surprised when it comes to report cards or conferences they know exactly where their student stands their strengths and their areas to improve upon I could honestly go on and on about Connelly but if you've ever had the pleasure of working with her or your child has ever been in her class then you know exactly what I'm talking about Michelle bleeds blue and white
018and always will [Applause] oh wait Michelle one more thing oh yeah that's right got the the traveling student of the month belt created by the tech department you have to wear it proud this month that's good all right got Kevin all right p member Court of conduct review Doug I will recognize that a board member has no legal Authority as an individual and that decisions can be made only by a majority vote at a board meeting all right thank you anybody any questions I can send oh in case you guys are wondering you can more than welcome to stay for the rest of the board being which by no means do you have to take care I would leave that's it all right does anybody have any question on the consent agenda no can I
019please have a motion to approve the consent agenda motion Second Joe and yes yes yes yes yes superintendent report Mr Gold okay I'm going to start with the uh item a is exhibit 7 the human X data that we uh we annually give this survey we do it in December um early on when we started with humanex we would do it first thing in the year but we found that data was uh not as reliable um we wanted to get teachers here for a while and staff here for a while before we were give them the survey so we've been giving it in December the last few years um and you have the full district report on exhibit 7 I'm just going to highlight a couple P three different spots you have that report to
020look at it goes through every question shows you how the questions were rated by the staff it's a one to five rating um with five being the highest rating for each one of those I'm going to point you to page 21 of the exhibit so Matt if you could oh I'm sorry it's okay uh page 21 of the exhibit um seven uh show what we call the dream box and you'll see a box with Nine Circles in it and uh the dream box is the top right that would be the percentage of Staff based on the survey results who have high engagement and high satisfaction with their work at Big Hollow and uh this year that number was at 79.9% and you look in the box there's a small box in there that says 79
021.17 that's what the rating was last year so very similar to last year's rating and that's a very very strong number I think in education they tell me human X tells me that the average score in an education institution is usually 65% in the dream box so um this would tell me that we have staff that uh are really uh engaged and satisfied with their work here um the there are three black boxes that are around that red circle or I'm sorry black circles around that red circle those are the next three best spots to end up and you can see the the remainder of our staff are mostly in those three areas um if you look at the bottom left there's 1.03% that are in the uh bottom left that's low engagement low satisfaction
022that 1.03 would be two two or would be two individuals we don't know who those individuals are but there were 194 individuals that took the survey uh so 1 3% would be two individuals um right next to that is uh you know 1.55% that's three individuals are uh low satisfaction and mid engagement so that's kind of how we read that but um everybody else was inside the uh top right corner which was uh you know very good for us um the next page page um I think that's the right one yes this ranks the questions by order uh and uh the highest the highest ranking question or statement was I'm fully engaged in the work that I do and then the next was I feel great pride in the work I do the next is
023I'm committed to achieving my potential through learning and growing the next highest was I'm driven to contribute to the success of the organization and the next one is in my role I have the opportunity to do things that I both do well and enjoy so those are the top five and I think those are really five strong statements that I'm I'm glad to see our staff values here at Big Hollow um and then the next page I'm going to point you to is Page 27 which uh shows the bottom five questions actually it's about the bottom seven or eight on that page but the bottom five um and some of these have been repeated in the bottom five um there we've we do set goals around trying to improve in these areas even though these
024numbers are not bad a score of 3.8 is our lowest and that's the that states I've received meaningful recognition in the past 10 days and uh that's been consistently our lowest and what what human X shares with us too is that it's it's it's low in most organizations it's a hard thing for us to uh um to address but we you know we try so we're we're still working on it went up a little bit from last year but it's basically the same score um our organization selects the right people for the right job is the next one um that's gone it's been in our bottom five the last few years but it's slowly gone up from where it was um I am provided an opportunity to spend quality time with my supervisor the next
025one and then you can read the others come going up we do again they'll each building leadership team will set goals they'll pick a couple of these and set some goals to uh address them to see what they can uh do to try to make those go higher for next year but that's the data just doesn't go in a closet uh we do take this data and we try to um you know work on areas that that we see our deficient so but all in all I I have to give some credit to the building leadership for their work in the and and seeing such strong scores across the board there any questions on that no all right all right next item is our school calendar exhibit 8 um so this is developed I uh
026what I do is put out a draft uh to start the process and I pretty much just uh create account calendar that models what we had this year and then I take that to the administrators we kind of play around with it a little bit they throw their ideas in and then I take it to the union leadership as part of our contract we are to work with them on this as well and uh both uh actually both Don and Michelle um uh are who I talked to on this and we they had some great ideas and we threw those ideas in here and based on the feedback from all three groups we developed this calendar I also brought this up with our uh um one of our board committees I'm not sure which one
027human resource committee maybe okay yeah and uh kind of give them a heads up of some things we're thinking because there are some differences here the start date is the same corresponding week as this year which uh should line up with Gavin should line up with Lake Villa is a week behind Grant Fox Lake Fox Lake varies sometimes they'll go with this week sometimes they'll go with the week before so that's where those are at um the here's the big changes for this year that we've not done since I've been here one is uh we moved so we have two teachers in two to start the year kids come in on a Wednesday uh the the 20th so that's that's the same as what was this year the next teachers Institute day moved to October
02810th and it's the same it's a Friday October 10th will be a teachers Institute that weekend will be a 4-day weekend for students because the Monday is a Columbus Day usually we've put that teachers in November um the reason we moved it out is because we did we are trying something this has kind of been a trend in schools right now um so we're going to give it a shot uh we moved our parent teacher conference to the MonDay of Thanksgiving week and then we uh so we our teachers will be here on Monday from 11: to 7: and then uh students and teachers will be off Wednesday Tuesday Wednesday and Friday so of that week so uh we won't have student attendance that week of Thanksgiving we'll have par teacher conference on Monday night
029and then that's pretty much it for like changes uh you know the next teachers Institute is Friday February 13th and that is follow also a long weekend with the president day on the following Monday uh the last day of school is in May uh May 29th Friday May 29th so it's the uh just the Friday after Memorial Day so that's the calendar if you aren't any questions then let Kevin take it over for approval anybody have any questions on the calendar okay I please have a motion to approve the uh 2025 2026 school calendar motion Second Joe and Doug all in favor I any POS ISAC all right the next one is the uh second reading of a board policy I just want to make a side note before Kevin takes over on this one
030uh we still have recommended recommendation in there of uh of not touching the title 9 policy or grievance procedure and and just just this last Friday the federal a federal judge struck down the title 9 so um all of the changes that press made are going to have to revert back possibly unless there's so I'm kind of glad we didn't do anything with that because it's already changing but uh so we haven't changed since the 2020 uh uh law uh right now the federal judge has uh taken 20 the 24 law down so I I don't know where it's going to go from here but we can just let the dust settle before we do anything so all right everybody have any questions on the uh press plus okay I please have a motion to
031approve on second reading the Press plus Bo board policy update second Tiffany and Vivian all in favor I any oppose I have and the last item I have is just a reminder of 8th grade graduation it's on the Wednesday May 28th if it's not on your calendar so all right uh anybody have any questions on the uh annual review of Clos session meeting minutes um the motion that we make is to keep all these closed meeting minutes and closed status so could please have a motion to uh keep all closed meeting minutes in closed status motion second Ash Joe all in favor I any oppose I have it security window film okay um I want to share a few things with this project this was written into the Federal grant the school violence uh prevention
032program Grant we received a half a million dollars for that Grant we also not knowing that we were going to receive the grant we also wrote These funds into our health Life Safety bond that we received so um but we will be paying for this out of our grant um the project itself is something I've been talking about for a couple years and one of the reasons it came to my attention was we were looking at replacing our door lock systems in our classrooms because we couldn't we can't lock the doors the inside and we were concerned about that we were looking at door lock systems and and uh one vendor said to me you know if you do buy new locks and somebody did have a weapon inside the school they're just going to
033break break the window that's next to the door reach in and unlock the door so that's a very good point so um and then that's when the the whole security window film discussion started for me and that was probably 3 years ago I'm going to jump to this presentation um real quick and this is uh National glazing Solutions assisted me with this presentation so this won't take long but I want to share a couple things with you um this this shows that uh you know where active shooter events are located uh Commerce School government worship Health you can see school is pretty much up there as number two um that's not a surprise to you uh the casualty you know weapons are handguns and rifles um is what we what they primarily see um this
034is something that I I want you to be aware of six out of 10 of the deadliest school shootings occur when a shooter was able to enter by shooting glass out so um specifically I think this picture might even be from the Nashville incident the one the most recent that I remember is Nashville Covenant School uh this the person came in shot the window walked right through and uh they did have police on site very soon because there it's in the middle of Nashville uh but the shooter still was able did kill a few students in that uh shooting but she got she walked right in just by blowing that window out um what I want to be really clear before you vote to approve this or not approve this um we're not putting Bulletproof
035window or uh film on Windows this just doesn't exist um what we are doing is we're going to be buying time um for somebody if they wanted to get into the school if they wanted to break into a classroom uh we're buying time and we will have police officers here uh in a matter of minutes and we're just buying time especially what a building that concerns me is the primary Elementary because we have Florida ceiling windows in the classrooms all around the building so we're putting in this is says tier 2 mitigation 14 to 15 mil we're putting in 15 mil uh window film on every interior and exterior window with the exception of second floor Middle School exterior we're not doing that obviously because nobody's going to climb in the window but all the
036windows that would would have access from ground level or when you're inside the building to get into a classroom all of those windows will have this window film on it um these are uh um institutions that recommended or reports that recommended security films Sandy Hook was one after their report they recommended the security film as a safety measure um the federal Commission on school safety in 2018 uh the the margerie stowman Douglas High School Public Safety commission the Texas educ ation agency you can see all of these uh um have recommended the move towards safety film I will say um so let me go on I guess we're choosing a product called Mano safety Shield 1500 that's a 15 mil product the product goes on the inside of the glass and then there's a glaze
037looks like a bead of COA that goes around the product that holds it that basically molds it to the window frame you won't even know that it's on the window you can see through it you'll be fine it won't even know it's there other than you'll see a little bead on the inside of the window that's what keeps the safety glass on the window or on the the attached the the frame so I'm going to show a uh video and in the video I'll explain it first there's going to be four different windows that a guy is going to shoot at one of them is going to be no window film at all and you'll see it just shatters and you walk right through and another one is going to be the next Laver up
038is going to take him a little time to get in a couple minutes but it's still that's not as thick as the window film we're putting on the next one is actually a little thicker than what we're putting on but it's more comparable so I'll let let Matt play this you can see it just takes three minutes yes [Music] so this is a window film with nothing on it can walk right in just kind of take your foot kick it out go in the building this one would be with a film that's about half as thick as what we're putting on he'll be able to get through it a little quicker than what they would here but you can see the bullets do go through so we're buying time we're not making it Bulletproof he's
039getting a little tired so again that was about half as thick as what uh the the stuff we are putting on and this next one is a little thicker than what we are putting on but I'd say it's probably more comparable for the time to breach it as you can see they bullets will go through it I mean it's actually sad that we're sitting at a board meeting and talking about this but it's real it he gives up but uh and then I think we could probably shut it off the last one is not really comparable to what we're having they're putting on both sides so so we can go ahead and turn that off sorry thanks Matt um myth number one is that this is bulletproof and you can see that it was not
040bulletproof so I don't want to anybody to think that's what we're putting in um they do leave behind a bullet hole in the glass uh myth number two is that it's impenetrable you can see there that they can gain access eventually it just takes some time I think if we were buying five minutes of time we're going to have a pretty significant police presence on campus within five minutes um I don't think they would just I think they'd be coming from wherever it's around here I'm assuming Kevin would you say yeah five minutes yeah um so this is just an I think what when I talked to MGS I said I just need to reiterate with people that we are not putting bulletproof windows on here I don't want people to think that and so
041they're just making a statement that it's it does not represent this doesn't stop the bullets we're buying time um and then this is just a statement from the Tennessee uh state legislator um there are some there are some uh vendors out there that are promoting their products as being bulletproof it's just doesn't exist we're using a company the recommendation is going to be a company called National glazing Solutions uh they've got some information here they've done a lot of work all over the country I think I saw 470 schools they've put in I will say that um 4 and 42 4 and 42 since 2019 primarily down in Texas um I will say when we went through this process um I've I've probably talked to four or five vendors myself but then three vendors came
042to bid the project um one of the vendors came from Las Vegas and flew up here and uh then their bid was the lowest bid you'll see it in the bid pack but they really did not instead of taking our architect we had our architect draw up design the project and so that we knew exactly how many windows how much square footage all that was on there and they chose to go off their own measurements and they messed up the bid so they were at $170,000 000 um if I could go to the next exhibit Matt sorry in the packet yeah I can go to the packet now sorry exhibit 11 um so the lowest bid was 170,000 but I did call them right away talked to their owner and I you know I said
043I think you need to double check your numbers um we could have could have held them to it and said you got to come here and do it for this but I'm afraid they'd be cutting Corners because they're going to lose money on the project so I don't want to done uh I want it done right I think we we all want to make sure of that so um and then they they did confirm that they had the wrong measurements because they went off their own measurements so um so I let them out of the bid and then uh I'm recommending to you that we take NGS which was the which was the second uh bid I anticipated the project to be about 3 350,000 and they came in at 276 so um under what
044we budgeted for it and then uh exhibit 12 is just going to be a so that's the that's the three bids 276 348 and 170 the 348 was actually the company we were working the most with thinking that they would probably get the bid and they were the highest but um then the exhibit 12 was just a letter of recommendation from our contract from our architect saying they recommend that we use NGS they vetted NGS as well and are confident that they can do the work and do it well so that's the that's the project any questions on that oh wow that's a way wrong date thank you good catch Warr there's no maintenance there's a uh like there's a just a one-ear um installation warranty and then that's just for their installation piece of
045it but uh there's a 10year like product warranty that it stays on the window it does you know there's 10 years for that so yeah yeah it will be on the inside of the window so it won't be but it will be exposed to the sunlight obviously but it won't be exposed to any elements yeah and I would guess the uh so you know like if a window breaks if you know the brak's going to look different now because it's just going to crack it and but we will have to have them come out and put a we'll have to replace the glass then have them come out and put a new one on yeah what's the longevity have they tested how long it holds its they gu do they guarantee it for a certain
046amount of time because yeah Sun breaks down everything yeah that's where they they said the 10e is what they gave me was a 10-year warranty on it so I'm not sure if it's been out much longer than that some of this product so then what do we do at 10 years well I don't know I don't know honestly I don't think it's going to peel off I think it's just um I can't can't imagine it would peel off CU it's going to have that glazing on it so I I really can't answer that um I me I wouldn't be surprised if it's discolor and stuff we have to do something okay yeah plastic yeah it could be I mean they did say that um every contractor said that most of what they do is at
047Main entrances and then uh so I and they said so they acted surprised like you're doing the inside too I go yeah but I said here's why I go should we not be doing the inside and he goes no you really should be but just people aren't doing that you know and it's usually you know financial reasons and I say well we wrote into a grant we got the Grant and I'm I'm concerned about somebody having a weapon inside the school and then you know at that point having that on the main entrance isn't going to help us so I was more concerned about the classroom safety for kids but so that's where this all came from anybody have any other questions all right can I please have a motion to approve uh the contract
048with NGS for the installation of security window film throughout each building uh of the bigall school district campus motion second Joan Vivian Sasa yes keer yes Lions yes Pon yes Bennett yes enters uh does anybody have any questions on the December employment recommendations with the addition okay I please have a motion to approve the December employment recommendations with the addition second Tiffany and Doug enters Pon yes Lions yes Bennett yes sesca yes and keer yes uh we didn't have any resignations for the month of December yay any public comment uh any questions on the fory your request any requ questions on the monthly reports for the board I did have one yes on the APAC U meeting it said that the district might is going to provide child care I want to know if we
049would do that for any of our other committees like CAC or anything else we oh so we are not actually it's on there I would just ask we remain consistent and our yep got it thank you anybody else have questions the next regular scheduled board meeting will take place on Monday February 10th 2025 with call session beginning at 6: PM I can I please have a motion to adjourn second Tiffany and Joe all in favor I I any oppos
