001and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you very much okay so we have anything to add to the agenda nope nope i need a motion to approve the agenda motion second cheater yes yes why is it gonna happen when i'm running things uh academic spotlights is art are you taking this sir sure i can take this [Laughter] for our academic spotlight we're going to start with heather fisher our middle school math specialist and courtney wegren from our middle school as well ladies yes yeah turn it on [Music] sorry this is heather fisher she's the math specialist here at big hollow middle school i'm courtney wager and the reading specialist all right so we are really excited today to highlight what we have
002been doing this year at the middle school some of the implementations that we have made this year supporting that mtss framework so one of the things we want to focus on is those tier three interventions that's a lot of what we do um our tier three interventions is really supporting the students and the teachers in that framework but really into those smaller groups we look at approximately about five percent of those who fall beneath the um 10th percentile using our map data and we give them theirs are the ones who receive those tier three services it's small group it's very individualized we work on building their confidence we work on those relationships um with them so we at the middle school run that during our epic periods that's um and we focus on tuesdays and
003thursdays with those small groups about 80 to 60 minutes per week for math we use the bridges program as well as soar so just a little kind of overview of what those are for math bridges what it is is really focusing on using visual models a lot of manipulatives focusing where the kids skills are needed so we don't just model what they're doing in the classroom only or we don't just do re-teaching we really take a placement assessment to find out where that skill gap might be and that's what we focus on with those students in that small group bridges also uses a progress monitoring tool every five sessions so that we can really look at if the skills are growing if we need to kind of take a step back or not soar does
004something similar with a placement assessment and focusing on that skill rather than just what they're doing in class really source giving them more of a how do we see this in the real world we break it down into why are the relationships in math the way they are it's all about explaining with those manipulatives it's a lot of talking about the math that they're doing which we've seen a lot of kind of good feedback from the kids because they just get to talk about what they see kind of go through misconceptions and why they're misconceptions based on what they're noticing it's not just a bunch of practice activity and games we have those too but it's really getting into those kind of stone pieces of math that they may kind of have bumped over missed
005over the past few years so then our tier three program for reading is called read naturally live it works on fluency vocabulary and reading comprehension the goal is for students who are struggling to read to work on their skills with me one-on-one i listen to them read we work on multiple choice and matching and different kinds of questions to show their comprehension and vocabulary growth and overall our goal is to take readers who struggled and readers who hated reading and to show them success and therefore joy in reading so within those small groups like courtney said we want them to enjoy maybe that subject that they don't always feel so confidently with and we get a lot of that through those small groups working one-on-one with those small groups or one-on-two within that skill and
006hopefully feeling that confidence so we kind of get to see that to show some growth but we also use easy cbm as another tool to kind of monitor how they're growing easy cbm they take at tier three every eight to ten school days and it's really tracking the patterns in their performance and then we can kind of go from there once we get those results seeing do we need to kind of take a step back are they showing good growth we can use that along with their map data as well so tier three gets easy cvm so i need to take a moment to brag about our fearless leader dr king she had this wonderful idea zero hour zero hour is an opportunity for our students who struggle to participate in band and choir during
007epic instead they come to school early 7 a.m to 7 30 i'll also take a moment to brag on our transportation team who has been excellent in communicating with us and communicating with families and then picking up our students who need to come to school early they make a morning pre-morning trip come back then go pick up all their students for the day and then do it all over again for elementary and primary so we are so thankful to them and for dr king coming up with this wonderful idea it allows our students to be in both band and choir and receive tier three services that dosing is still two to three days per week so if you're coming in for reading you're coming three mornings we say it's about 20 minutes once they get
008here and get logged in so there's still a dosing of 60 minutes per week and if they're in math they're coming two or three days based on the skills that they need we reached out to miss julie d after she was bragging on us for allowing our students to come in for zero hour i'll give you a moment just to read what she has to say so i think that misty and our band instructors are very enthusiastic about the program um and students are are glad to be able to be a part of the things they're passionate about while also learning to read and do math skills effectively this is so exciting so we reached out to some of our students uh some former math and reading haters and the first one you'll see insisted
009that his name be put on his quote because he's proud of it he feels good coming to epic he has fun while he's working i'm just really proud of our students the progress that they're making and the joy that they're showing in coming um i let our current students know that their last day will be on april 28th and they said what can we come in during recess what all right we also do quite a bit of work with our tier two interventions that is a lot of the teacher support though too not just us working with students because our tier twos are ran with the teachers so we really help support in those trainings with the programs that we're using finding them resources if needed communication helping them with that data helping them roll
010out their program but we also help with the planning and finding who needs that tier 2 support so with tier 2 we're looking at the about approximately 15 percent of students who fall beneath the 25th percentile in that nwea assessment so for math we do imagine math and tier two we also um also use imagine math facts but it's both part of that imagine math program imagine math is able to link up to our students nwa scores for math which is awesome because nwa breaks math into four different like skill sets and categories so students are given pathways based on where they scored so if they scored really high in one then they're given the kind of supports in that area but if they scored low in another it's going to give them at that
011skill level where they need support for that pathway so it's neat to see that it allows students to kind of move up and down fluidly based on how they're performing and how they score for map and then when they take it again in the winter or again in the spring it'll kind of reset for that it has games it has lessons it has this awesome online teacher feature where they can click and it's a live teacher who's willing to help them too and then since it is a smaller group again the teacher running that epic in for that tier two they can be there to support those students as well so i'll take a moment to explain what imagine reading is that we're using at the tier 2 level imagine reading provides our teachers the
012opportunity to work with students one on small group we limit those classes to 12 students and i will also take a moment to brag on our teachers imagine reading is an extra curriculum it is it is a full class to teach students however it is less dosing than a tier one classroom so about half their epic time is spent reinforcing reading skills and our teachers are doing an excellent job they're doing an excellent job reinforcing literature with our students going through reading comprehension questions listening to the students as they read for fluency and just really allowing our students to embrace and enjoy reading again so all of the praise goes to them we're really just here to support our teachers at the tier 2 level we provide insight and resources and any support that they
013might need in the classroom but that really comes back to our teachers so again as we said that's run during our epic time it's still two to three days per week that 40 to 60 minutes um and then we have incentive for those students to get through those minutes because then they have those other two days or so where they can some use it as a study hall or they play like board games or cards or they drop whatever the teacher has found their little niche is they kind of have that choice activity time too so you won't believe it but i went and i found the students with the worst data and the worst behavior data and the worst attitude about reading and i asked them what they thought of their tier 2 classroom
014and their teachers and this is what they had to say i never liked reading before but now i'm learning with mrs wolframski i feel excited to go to epic because i have a teacher to help me when i'm struggling i feel like it's fun because mrs wilhelm has us work on reading for 20 minutes then we're allowed some free time so currently we have 176 students that have participated in math or reading tier 2 interventions and we have 85 who have participated in math or reading tier 3 intervention then at the tier 1 level that is all students so 100 of students have access to imagine language and literacy within their classrooms as well as imagine math we rolled out an incentive cart to help motivate students to get this timing done throughout the week
015they do have time throughout class in their small groups throughout their centers to get this work done and their goal is to get 50 minutes a week completed on either imagine language and literacy or math so when we pull that data and we talk with teachers and kids about the math imagine math that they've been doing their lessons passed or their reading minutes we put them on a wheel and we spin and they can be a winner on our fun cart we have given 368 [Music] incentives to students for tier one um we changed our card up a little bit for you all but this is a sample of what you might get excited for when it comes by and they cheer for us they call us the imagine ladies well that's they cheer for
016the cart but they get very excited every week to know like that they're getting rewarded for those goals but thank you i did like the stewardess on a plane and if we miss it for some reason and we're like oh make it up tomorrow they hold us to it oh thank you if you have any questions please email us we nerd out about data with our fearless leader dr king she's been so supportive to us and so ready and available to answer all of our really silly questions so if there's anything that we can do to help you or your kids with reading writing math please reach out thanks guys thank you thank you ladies next up we have our specials and pe teams from the primary elementary building [Laughter] let's try this again see
017oh mr mccully is on it awesome thank you all for having us tonight we are here to represent the primary and elementary specials and pe team so we're going to begin with a quick introduction of the 10 of us these are 10 incredible people that serve this community from ages preschool all the way up through fourth grade so we'll start with an introduction of our art department and i'd like to introduce brenda weiskopf and here with us in the present is don lucas they are art on our tech and pltw team we have michelle kelman and peggy silverblatt representing the music department is myself katie schiller and new to us this year barbara wreath in our physical education department on the primary side we have chris chikovic and live with us here we have linda
018heman and representing pe on the elementary side we have carrie miller and live with us casper provo oh that's me i'm sorry so since specials aren't usually high on a parent's priority list when it comes to conferences they sometimes don't know a lot of what we do we always see them in the hallway when we're there to greet them for any school events they don't really get to see what we do so we created a google website for parents to be able for them to get a look inside of what we do in specials and pe the website will feature different videos different pictures of students k through four and it'll show them what they're doing when they're engaged they're learning having fun and at the end of each trimester it is set out for
019the parents and families to view and enjoy so a quick look on the webpage the it goes out and it's pretty laid out you can search by your child's grade level so when you click their grade level it will take you so if you click kindergarten there's about a short paragraph from each of the specials about what was covered that trimester along with different pictures and activities so these are just some of the pictures you may see in different videos highlighting the different classes and what's going on in each special excuse me this website also lets us take a look and see how many hits we've had when we have them um it was sent out with the newsletter along with through skyward um and we're able to track how many people view it and
020we learn that the majority of our viewers use mobile devices to view our link which is not all that surprising um but it's kind of neat to see you can see the spikes there i think we had decided that on the day that we actually set the links out was the day that we get the most hits and then after that it kind of goes down but it's there for them for whenever they want to look at it our team is very proud of this website that we created this is new for us this year um given the pandemic and the times right now we are so just so incredibly thankful and so blessed to have a community that supports us and in all that we do we're just so thankful for all of you
021and our for our community for mr gold and our administrators as well so we wanted to extend that thank you for letting us continue to do what we love and one thing that just touches the kids so much and when they may not be succeeding in other areas we find that light in them and that is such a joy for us every day so we wanted to extend our thanks to you and we'll leave you with a favorite quote of our team and our quote reads when we nurture a whole child's being we open the doors to endless possibilities thank you all have a wonderful night [Applause] hey thank you next up we have our accomplishment recognition and we're going to start with our student of the month ryan rivera our fourth grader ryan can
022you please come up former teacher has some nice things to say about you so i nominated ryan because i've seen him grow so much over the last few years and i have to say my office is where he comes in every morning and i make it a special trip to make sure i'm out there so i can see him because he's so kind and caring to all of his classmates and his hard work and devotion to everything just makes me smile every day we're all really proud [Applause] all right next up is employee of the month monica stromberger [Applause] and i believe uh dr pittman was gonna was it you dr pittman that was gonna come up and say some words about her oh is it dawn i'm sorry no that's okay i don't even
023know where to start with her because we've known monica for so many years at our school and she's just amazing she rolls with the punches she does whatever is asked of her she does it with a smile on her face but i will say that now that i'm teaching art and monica comes with mrs roller's students to our i get to see monica firsthand and this is it this is her calling to work with students she is amazing [Applause] thank you [Applause] okay board member code of conduct athletes okay sorry uh big hollow school district will recognize student athletes who receive high honors straight a's for the second trimester certainly if all of you that are here if you could please come up so we could have your picture taken that would be great our
024athletes [Applause] right so you guys are gonna have certificates we just don't have one yet okay all right [Applause] board member code of conduct all right we're there yeah um how about vivian i would recognize that a board member has no legal authority as an individual and that decisions can be made only by a majority vote at a board meeting excellent are there any questions on the consent agenda no no i need a motion to approve the consensus motion second pleasure yes public comments excellent superintendents reports okay first on the agenda exhibit number six is the staffing plan for the 22-23 school year do we not have a copy of it yeah we have we have it on our chromebooks we have oh yeah okay so it doesn't need to be up there then okay
025basically there are three new positions compared to this previous year and they are a bilingual teacher position a social worker for the elementary building and a math interventionist position for the primary elementary so those are the three new proposed positions that we would be adding for next year does anybody have any questions about those positions or the staffing pattern no so we need a motion to approve the first draft of the staffing plan motion second down there bennett yes okay moving on to item b presentation of humanx uh silvana popovic is here and she's going to be presenting the district's data hi everyone how are you nice to see everybody hi everyone left in the crowd okay so i'm just going to very quickly um we already saw it in september the staff culture and
026climate so i'm going to go right through that just as a reminder here are the dimensions for staff staff satisfaction here is the staff satisfaction and engagement percentile 70 percent um highly engaged highly satisfied out of 153 uh voices that were heard so this is the staff culture and climate survey as we move forward the student engagement student engagement and parent engagement surveys were conducted end of january and beginning of february and then we have the data back so we're really going to be looking at this student engagement feedback as a reminder the student engagement is participants third grade through eighth grade it is written at the third grade readability takes about one period about 30 minutes to take in a class period there are 13 dimensions you'll see that on the right hand side
02713 dimensions four of which are in red are maslow's hierarchy of needs there are four different three different question stems they ask about the student themselves so i responses the students responds toward teachers and toward principals so three different question stems when we take a look at the um the participation first and foremost we had 978 students participate in the survey third grade through eighth grade those highlighted in red were dimensions that are consistent in that same order as they were last year so when we take a look at our students what our students are telling us is that they feel a great sense of self-esteem and belonging to of um maslow's hierarchy of needs being met this survey is out of a likert scale of a five-point scale so we're sitting right in that
028a little bit above that average uh rate with that 3.94 so a very nice standing for self-esteem again the lowest if you will in that order relatively is choice choice and learning has remained the bottom for the last three years the the last one i'm holding steady at the 3.9 we'll see what those questions look like in a moment when we take a look at the students satisfaction and engagement and how they are feeling grades three through eight last year we were at 29 percent uh highly satisfied highly engaged and this year we are at 27 highly engaged and highly satisfied what we're looking to do year after year is to make sure that we're moving our students and changing their climate and culture so that the lower left that eight percent um we're shifting
029people uh and students out of that lower left and into the upper right currently we don't see that trend we see the opposite trend we see some a little bit more gain in the lower left quadrant and so what we're going to need to do is look at all of the squares and say okay what can we do to improve that satisfaction and engagement for all of our students grades three through eight this is participation by building again participation is really what gives this perception data its integrity this is uh more i believe you have it in your packet you can see it a little bit better better than on screen but this is the trend um blue is 2019 student data red is the 2020 and this year in green is 2021 by grade
030level and then also elementary middle and then the full district in the end i don't know if this oh no never mind i was looking for the uh for the red oh there it is so this is all of elementary this is middle school and then this is the whole district right here the trend um and then these are by grade level third grade fourth grade fifth sixth seventh and eighth okay as we move forward now you can see what those question stems here are the five um top questions the highest questions at 4.22 i have friends at school who care about me so you can see those categories and dimensions the top three are self-esteem actually four of the top five questions are in self-esteem one from belonging all both of those are maslow's
031hierarchy of need extremely important but also fantastic to know that our students are feeling that they have that level of self-esteem and that they feel a sense of belonging lowest questions lowest question on the survey is 2.73 i have a lot of energy at the start of the school day very common especially for junior high students to be reporting this and then we have three questions out of the choice and that is choice and learning we know that when students are given the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in multiple different ways and that they have choice in the way the rules are established in the classroom that that benefits them as they engage in the classroom so you can see the three questions of choice and then the one for safety i feel comfortable sharing
032personal information with my teacher that's at a 3.4 so that one stays pretty pretty consistent where we were last year any questions before i move on into the parent i have one can you go back to the slide that shows by grade level the dream box this one yes yes is this typical what you see with other um districts as far as as the is the mature and grade level the sloping downwards of yes unfortunately there is a decline from elementary to junior high and uh unfortunately even lower for high schools high school students that's just junior year particularly is the hardest for students um is you know i we the data can't diagnose it can't tell us why or what um but we have some fantastic conversations around why that might be in the
033schools and i think that that is something that we start to understand all the challenges that middle school presents to a child plus the fact that in grade level in the elementary districts typically elementary districts are k5 so they've had a longer time together the transition into sixth grade and then a short time of six through nine is something that also presents itself so there's a lot more complexity that goes into our junior high and what our junior high students are experiencing um but this data lends itself plus the questions to some great conversations with the teachers in the administration for sure yeah thank you are those so the red but the red bars are the red is 20 20. so that's the homes the cove at home school year yes yeah they all enjoyed
034that yeah they're all happier well in in some grade levels not across the board um fourth grade struggled uh fifth grade dropped sixth grade loved it looks like that um seventh grade actually loves this year more being back to school and then eighth grade uh enjoyed it and then we have all of elementary and then olive middle if you remember that the teachers also uh the dream boxes of the staff also were higher last year and you actually showed growth in the uh staff culture and climate in 2020 then in 2021 any other questions and follow-ups to this okay now we'll move into the parent engagement survey parent engagement survey again in february um for 43 questions um eight dimensions takes about 10 15 minutes it can be taken on any device this is the
035survey that we keep out and open a little longer it was actually open for over a month just because this survey again to elicit more parent participation is really critical this is also the codes are given out by schools so if you had an elementary middle school or if you had a primary elementary or middle school when we talk about participation one parent having a child in each setting primary elementary and middle would have been taking it three times in with the perspective of i'm responding to primary the primary building i'm responding to the elementary building or the junior high so one family one parent can actually fill out the survey multiple times to reflect their child in the three different settings that are here so that's important to understand too when we take a
036look at the um when we take a look at the dimensions so here we have at the very top so we had 424 participants so that's indicative of we really couldn't tell if how many multiple but year after year we've had the superintendent being the leading dimension i have to say that that is extremely unique for the chicagoland area of the 24 school districts that i currently coach that use this survey this is the only school district that has that that the superintendent is at the top so from there we have the school environment and all of these eight dimensions are really a reflection the opinion isn't how great they are the opinion is they are necessary for my child to learn so the relationship with the superintendent the school environment how do all of
037these eight things provide my student with access to learning um and so that's what that percep perception is we even with the lowest of principle we see that we enjoyed 4.6 4.8 right all the way through the pandemic this year in february i really wouldn't call it much of a drop at all we're still around that hovering around that 4.0 which is what we call the uh that's in the zone anything for 4.0 and above is already in the good to great because it's still out of a likert scale of five so this is really fabulous news uh obviously having more parents complete this year after year is really going to be important to try to leave this open there are some months of the school year that are better to have this like music
038nights art show nights you know curriculum nights anything like that so i think that we will take a look to see if we can change that to maybe increase the parent participation but fantastic reflections from the parent community for sure here's the dream box for the parent engagement so we're talking about the two axes are school pride and service quality so really getting their investment on their uh educational uh community and that they feel pride so 55 of the 424 are feeling very good about their pride high pride and high service quality of the district for their child's learning so that's that's really fantastic again i see the typical range to be in the 30 to 35 range for this type of survey here you see the participation year after year so we really see
039that the first year that we administered it was very low we had a great participation in 2020 very high and this year we are sitting just below last year so last year actually was our uh had that data was more indicative has more integrity than even this year's by a little bit and then you see each one of the school buildings the three for the parents that's participation here you see again each one of the buildings and looking at the dream box for that particular building so i believe my eyes are really bad i don't know if this is pointing or not but you see the primary really shot up this year the elementary also grew middle school has slowly been going on a slight decline and then the district overall really is showing a
040really strong parent participation and also parent perception of the school district there it is i was just checking my clicker okay any questions on this here we have these are new to the top five so the top five questions these are the highest 4.46 is fabulous teachers treat me with respect that's a wonderful a wonderful reflection to know from our parents to our teachers i'm comfortable approaching my child's teacher with questions and concerns so that that's just wonderful to see our teachers as the highest questions on the survey out of 424. the new questions are bus drivers are uh responsible and trustworthy you can we all remember what last year looked like with our bus drivers at our transportation this is fabulous to be able to see this year and then overall i feel the
041superintendent of the district is doing a an excellent job so again those two are new to the top five category this these are the lowest five questions obviously the lowest question is about the cafeteria providing high quality meals the new new questions to the bottom five are my child's teachers reach out to me regularly with feedback about how my child is doing in school that was not there last year actually i recall this question last year as significantly high and i think we all had a conversation about it because our students were remote parents did have more access and we're more connected and we're seeing on a daily basis what the child was doing and they saw their teachers more frequently even if it was you know over zoom um and this is uh this
042might be a reflection now where kids are back in the classroom but that's a relatively low it's still at a 3.47 and then the other two questions that are new to the bottom as a parent i actively contribute to the students to the school district's success relatively low uh mean and then my child's um shares with me that learning is fun at school any questions to take a look at here so this is a reflection that these are the same top five questions that were last year and this is what last year's look like and what that difference was i just put it in a different slide any questions on the parent engagement that you'd like to go back to okay thank you very much for your time really appreciate it thank you thank you
043thank you thank you next up is the review of the updated second reading of the board policies anybody have any questions on the board policies no no no can i please have a motion to prove on second reading on the board policy update motion second joe and vivian all in favor motion is read say aye aye any opposed eyes have it okay uh some information to mark on your calendars for the end of the school year two very important dates wednesday may 25th at 7 00 pm will be the eighth grade graduation ceremony and again we'll be holding at the mchenry outdoor theater and friday may 27th pending no emergency days are utilized will be the final day of school and if this will also be an early release day was there any more discussion
044on when they're going to let parents into graduation that we know um i would have to get to get back to you on that and talk to dr king i'm not sure where we are with that okay all right thank you uh anybody any questions on the february employment recommendations can i please have a motion to approve the february employment recommendations motion second gary and lauren yes yes yes we accepted a resignation of kim hansen middle school graphics arts teacher effective at the end of the 2021-2020 school school year we accepted the retirement of donna davincia crutch primary school social emotional counselor effective at the end of the 26-27 school year we accepted the resignation of sienna colebreaker middle school teacher effective march 7 2022 we accepted the resignation of chloe kowtow seventh grade social
