about being on the warrior news is that i you know can learn stuff along the way and learn new things with my friends on the news team what i also like is that this is going to help me in the future with sports journalism because you know reading scripts and you know making videos off of them is really helpful for me all right so thank you for your time and i can't wait to be back at school [Music] i'm sorry very good you guys this uh this work that you're doing has been it's really brought like i feel like it's brought a lot of community to the school you're doing a great job with it and uh we just wanted to highlight that tonight and we just thank you for all the work and mr

shores to your leadership over this is has been phenomenal so thank you very much do any of you want to say anything to you're always so eager to say stuff on camera and you want to say anything right good mr shoresh oh okay mr shorts the mvp 2022 mvp cheers to mr shorsh all right yeah good stuff thank you so much guys i appreciate you all coming tonight all right uh next we're gonna do academ or accomplishments and uh first we have student of the month can i call up lance lavajo lance come on up congratulate you can you shake your hand all right so there's the so maybe turn around here so lance was let's give lance around applause i'm gonna read exactly what was said about lance i thought i thought it was

worth reading uh lance is the best of what it means to be a big hollow warrior in addition to coming to class each day ready to learn leading small group discussions and offering to share his ideas during whole class discussions he spends his time during breaks and after class to make big hollow a better environment for all of us he routinely stays after to clean his classmates mess on two separate occasions he noticed graffiti in the bathroom and asked for for a time to clean it when perform when informed that it's not his responsibility to do that he tells us that it's the right thing to do his daily display of empathy is truly an act of courage mr buckwalter so that's a pretty good testament to you and your family can we get a

picture here thank you lance [Applause] and then mrs olney can you come on up congratulations mrs olney and greta can i have you come up and uh do you mind first of all let's give miss only a round of applause miss adam's uh recommended gret or recommendedness only so i'm share well she got the primary building together to support mrs servant and if you've ever had to do anything for with a bunch of teachers we are not the easiest crew to organize and get something done so aaron took care of making sure that we were very supportive and got ourselves together and they actually looked like we looked like a collective unit so good job aaron aaron uh really took it upon herself to help a staff member who's in uh going through a challenging

time and it's really what makes big hall a pretty special place that you have people that support each other and care for each other outside of our daily activities at school so we appreciate it and this is very very well deserved for this month so thank you very much aaron get a picture thank you and sorry to make you wait all again all right item eight board member code of conduct gary i will strive to keep my board focused on its primary work of clarifying the district's purpose direction and goals and monitoring district performance all right does anybody have any questions on the consent agenda nope okay please have a motion to approve the consent agenda potion second very vivian yes peter yes yes we have any public comments no superintendent's report mr gold all

right i'm gonna i'm gonna be a little bit brief since we ran late so far tonight um the covid impact update i wanted to share i'm just going to go through a few things real quick we're at the midpoint of the school year and uh i want to hit a few important topics we've been dealing with first of all masks is a big issue but in the community and actually in the state not necessarily our community i would say all in all that has not been an issue with our with our students obviously we have uh there are some cases where uh we're dealing with it daily but not not a large issue for our administration at this time in our staff i think in the coming weeks it's going to be a challenge across

the state and i just want to give you the heads up i don't see the masked mandate lifting after i was on a call with dr with the element department of public health this last friday with all superintendents in illinois and they did not give us any inclination that that was going to be lifted but i do see this is what i want to give you heads up on because it's going to put us in an awkward position at some point i do see some districts stemming mainly from downstate teaming together and probably jumping ship off the mandate i think they're thinking that they do in large numbers that there's not a lot that can be done so we're going to see how that plays out but you could see that coming and if that

starts happening it's going to cause right now i don't have a lot of resistance in the community because we're under a mandate so it's just kind of we're all dealing with it if if if a large number of school districts across the state start ignoring the mandate there could be some pressure on our end to make some decisions so just so you know that's out there uh about six weeks ago i would have told you i thought maybe mid january early january we'd be able to like not require masks with all the cases in the last month i think that it's going to be harder to do sooner than i thought it would be so or at the time that i thought i would be able to to lift that off so that's that's kind

of where masks are at right now the quarantines in our district have been minimal we're trying everything we can to keep kids in school that are kids who are not symptomatic we try we're trying to keep them in school so our nursing staff and our administration is doing a very good job of the buildings and uh so we we've had i would say our our quarantines are mainly because students are either tested positive for covert or they got a close contact at home that's got coveted they did acknowledge that the idph they did acknowledge that they're seeing very little evidence of conversion happening at school which that's the case we're seeing here is we have very very little evidence of students transferring covid to students or staff very very very mental we have maybe two

situations this year that we can attribute to that the test to stay program has been really helpful to keep kids here we currently have 70 students testing voluntarily every week we have about 40 staff who are not vaccinated or also testing every week the idph is going to be releasing something but it's a slow process they're going to be releasing some new guidelines i think in january about letting us test to stay more individuals we're already experimenting with some things ourselves but there's probably new guidelines coming i i am concerned about our staff and that includes the whole staff across the board uh just there's an exhaustion level and and uh there's a lot going on um they're they're working very hard and i'm very appreciative of it um kids are doing really well i'm

trying to get into a lot of classrooms and i'm really seeing it's just for the kids it's like like things haven't changed i mean they're doing really well in a lot of aspects there has been a you know with every school district it's been the transition was hard but i think it's getting better but our staff we're dealing with a lot of you know there's mental health issues there's learning gap issues um and just to deal with the transition you know through this pandemic but they're doing a great job with it but i just be remiss to say that you know there is some exhaustion that we're trying to find ways that we can kind of relieve stress across the district um you know the only you know on the call with the idph i

would just tell you there's really no in-game plan yet which is kind of discouraging but there's just no in-game plan so we're just gonna have to uh you know right now we're just kind of rolling with it and uh things are functioning well right now we have 22 as of today i think we have 22 cases on campus of covid uh that's a pretty high number from where we've been usually we've been between zero and five uh and then the last few weeks we've really ticked up so 22 cases today is where we're at and we're just hoping to get through this week and not see anything too drastic and as long as we're not seeing transmission or conversion on campus then i think that we're doing everything we can we can't help what happens

outside of school so if we start seeing a lot of conversion on campus then we got to really look at what we're doing here and see what we can do better but right now we're seeing very very little evidence all the kids we quarantine kids we do test to stay they're not coming back positive we've had like i said two situations that could possibly be drawn back to school that that we know of now there could be something slippery cracks but what i know of does anybody have any questions on that anything that's been stirring in your head about all the covet stuff and want to ask me about all right um custodial services update very briefly i just want to let you know we are in the process of uh i'm in the process

of working with our cleaning company on getting out of the contract uh we're we've got one more year in their contracts uh they're not it's it's been poor performance um and uh this is the third cleaning company in my seven years here and and we haven't been satisfied with any one of them so i think we're talking the building grounds committee we're at the point where we want to try to take over our own cleaning so that's going to require hiring our own custodial staff nighttime employees and going into next year so i'm working with the current company on just on getting out of that contract and we're going to look at transition and i'll work through the building grounds committee on that process too so i just want to make the whole board aware

though any questions on that one so we would start that next year yes and then how many custodians were you looking to hide i don't have that number for sure yet that's part of the uh process but i i'm gonna say anywhere between six and eight probably to get both buildings cleaned every night right now they're sending maybe four and uh it's not doing it there's just no way that's not what they they're not able to meet the requirements of the bid because with four people they're not able to do that four people total for all three bills wow four people a night is what i think we're getting and i'm not sure the four people i'm pretty sure they're not even eight hours so it's just there's just no way to do what we

need to get done every night with what they're sending us so we got some tough negotiations coming up because i'm still paying uh i'm trying to negotiate lowering the bill because we're not getting all of our requirements met we've had to add a few requirements because of covid stuff so they've kind of justified it that way but we're going to have to work on that coming up so discussion on the recent recurring issue recent and recurring issues with the fire sprinkler systems this was asked to be put on the agenda we had an issue last week at the prime at the elementary building again um with a what's what happens is our sprinkler heads will freeze and here's the two issues and i we did i did meet with uh someone from the fire department

today to talk about it as well but we've got the way that built when the buildings were built there's four foot overhangs i'll be brief on this but there's four foot overhangs on each building and with the with a four foot overhang you have to have a sprinkler out outs out under the eave so those are the sprinklers that get cold and uh they'll freeze the other issue is that the way it was designed usually a sprinkler head would be the pipe would come in and the sprinkler the pipe would go up and the sprinkler had to be at the top ours are designed and it's it's a little weird but the pipe comes in i looked at it today over at the other building the pipe comes in and then it kind of elbows

around and then it goes down and the sprinkler heads down so condens even if we do drain the lines which we are changing some things on that when you drain the lines you're still there's still water that's going to condensation that's going to get in those pipes and when there's freezing and cold and there's condensation gets in there and it gets down on that head and it's in the eve and that kind of it gets water down there and it freezes and blows the head and when it blows the head the water just that's when we lose it so it's happened three times since i've been here um all in the elementary one thing we're going to try to do is we're having the guys now drain the lines every two weeks in the cold

so from october till march they're going to drain lines every two weeks but i still when i look at the design of it and this is what the fire department pointed out to me they said that they think that's a bad design when i look at the design i don't know how even drain the lines how that's going to get the water off some of those heads but we're going to try it the other option is and i did talk to them about it today if this doesn't work we can go the guys who work on our sprinkler systems said agree that these eve these uh fire or these heads that are out the sprinkler heads out in the eaves are doing no good at all there's no reason to have them there it's just

we have to have a four foot overhang and that's the that's the code at four feet you have to have it so but they said they're doing no no there's no positive having them out there so they want to our our company that works on these wants to cap all of them off we just want to shut them all off so there's no water going out to those um and the problem is we would not be meeting fire codes so i got if we do that i've got to get the state fire marshal to sign off on that so i am going to work on that if the draining of the lines doesn't work i'm going to work on going that route because we can't keep having these problems can we just fix it so

it's done right tap them off or what i mean i don't don't want to violate oh violating code is a good idea turn them all over whatever yeah fix them so they're all facing the right i mean i don't know anything about this but it needs to be common sense that if they're facing the wrong way we could pay someone to him yeah for some reason the design was was weird and uh and the interesting thing is i don't know so there's other schools around here that have the same architects and one of them is gray's lake and they had a pipe bus last week same day we had ours because our adjuster came out and he also was at their building they had the same i just don't know what the root of their

problem was but i know they had a sprinkler problem in their building too uh so yeah kevin uh if this drainage thing doesn't work then we're gonna have to fix it well i mean god forbid like somebody takes off a day and then it's not drained and then it blows again i mean i would just at least get a cost and see what it would cost to fix yeah at least for me yep i'll do that means that was a i don't know if we lost any chromebooks or the amount of damage was pretty substantial and i can't imagine kevin was over there he was in my we were meeting and he had to go over there it looked like a shower was on in a classroom yeah how is it that they end up

primed in the first place that you have to drain them what's that how are they ending up primed where you have to drain them in the first place when you say prime do you mean full of water oh they think it's just uh like condensation that gets in the lines from heat and cold from the design yeah and the condensation the water is going to find the lowest spot the lines are set up so that there's places where we have drains yeah and they're set up to but then but then if it doesn't make sense because i looked at it today you look at it and and they got the drains but then over here the heads down here so the water is going to find that spot yeah so 16. how many times has

this happened well it's i just i know that specifically sprinkler head bursts have happened three times since i've been here so seven years i know you had a bigger issue over here one time it happened in the office where we had to replace all the carpeting it did happen it happened in the office it happened right outside the cafeteria and then happened in this classroom before i got here it happened in middle school but i don't think that was a sprinkler i think it was something different they had something below though it was like a big one is the company that we had design it the one that manages it right now no no that architect is no longer by the same people that did the roofs it is yeah yeah i'll get a cost

i'll get a cost for fixing those heads though and the the last item i have is is exhibit 11 a proposal for the uh tech insurance plan um i'm gonna flip over that real quick we have a uh as matt mccully can testify we have a lot of issues with uh students who break tech break the chromebooks and then we have to kind of argue with parents about whether it should be their responsibility to pay or not and ends up taking a lot of our time we've been talking about doing this for a couple years we haven't pulled the trigger and then matt i'll feel free to jump in here matt and share what you'd like to share on this sure so just as bob was saying you know it's one of the biggest things

that our department deals with um as far as kind of time consumption and we want to be as fair as possible with everyone but also it's hard for us to be detectives on every single one and determine whether or not you know there was intention and all that so we've kind of marked it as any damage accidental or otherwise we're putting it on on families with the insurance plan the hope is that parents don't have to worry your families don't worry about any unexpected expenses we've laid out how that how that plan would would happen from first break second break and third break and even laid out um you know what constitutes an institute of a break where we're actually going to uh call that a claim um and then we've laid it out for

if the families don't take the insurance plan this is what it costs the districts to pay with having the bags available to the students and the insurance plan available to the students we're not going to argue with families if you don't take advantage of having the bags you want to take advantage of the insurance plan here's what it costs so everything's out there in the open right now the proposal is for uh january to the end of the school year um and then you know we can continue to look further on that so it would be 10 bucks for the rest of the year if you want to join the plan and then that would be it and then we'll talk about how when we do the student fees for next year which probably march

we'll talk about how to incorporate that next time for next year but for this year would be an optional we put it out there we'll put this document out there parents will give an easy way to sign up and uh once they pay the 10 bucks they're on the plan can we make sure that the documentation because i just rerun it now and it's not very clear that this is only optional right now it kind of looks like it's going to be optional every year going forward the way it's written um so that's that will be decided when we do the fees for next year whether it's optional or not next year right but reading this now it makes it seem like i sent this out to everybody that we're going to have an optional

plan going forward forever it doesn't make it clear this is that's what we're doing right now okay yeah by all means make any edits that you will see fit with our proposal the only other question i had for you is was there any plans to just inspect the computer after they sign up because i could just see you know where we've got a couple weeks off coming up my son drops the computer down the stairs i go and sign up for the ten dollars and bring it into you right away like do we know that the computers are in working order before they've signed up for it yeah i think we're gonna have to trust communities honestly i don't know that we have the manpower to inspect if a thousand kids sign up for us

to go around and inspect a thousand chromebooks it's not possible well if we get a thousand sign up that's great because then we have plenty of money to cover them up that's the whole yeah we can uh we can look and see how many we got sign up and then we can kind of play that and maybe just do a check on them as they go yeah the one thing that we would you know you can't sign up after you've turned it in and given the and i think we did try to make that clear that if we get the we get the ticket or we get the question like this is broken we're going to send it in to fix it oh and by the way i'm going to buy the insurance that's not

gonna happen so that's why you have the sign up date would be specifically just as of right now december 14th through january 17th and then after that point number for the year yeah yep yeah the only exception would be new students so we want to give them an opportunity exactly i was going to suggest would be worth having like you know a two-week window from the day you sign up two weeks before it's effective so you can't just sign up and then tomorrow bring it in and say hey that just happens my motherboard's dead for some reason uh i mean we could do do anything like that you know i'm just the big thing for for me is i want to try to to ease the burden on on the families i know right now

it's just that's the one thing that i mean we'll get one break and it'll be a screen which is very clearly you know something happened to the screen there's puncture marks on it and it'll be four hours of back and forth on the phone mr gold went up getting involved and now you know we we've spent the money that um we were going to spend on on fixing the chromebook on personnel having conversations with the parent um about the situation do you have a uh a large number uh repeat chromebook breaks by the same student so this year to date we've had two uh repeats um for those situations we've handled them individually this year's been much better with the chromebook bags that we purchased so we haven't had as many breaks so and we

have a lot more back and forth too so last year for the most part for most of last year you know they were they're sitting in the bedroom sitting on a kitchen counter somewhere at home and not really moving around a lot and we had a lot of breaks this year we've had a significant drop the bags have really really added to that protection for the families repeat shouldn't be as much of an issue because it's only the first claim that's really fully covered here so that repeat offender who keeps breaking their hinges or paying after the first time yeah you know kind of that first one you know we can definitely chalk it up to age but after that um you know there's and it's at least a discounted fee too the second time

so i think it's great all right so i guess i if you guys are good with it uh i've got an adjustment that i'm going to make that it's we'll highlight we'll make sure that it says it's optional for this year only and other than that we'll put this out probably in the next day or two what actually says this for the remainder of the school year but that's just further down it's in the second sentence just to maybe bold it okay or you can put through the last day january third through the last day yeah yeah i was just going to ask we we kind of open ended it with the last day or um the end of the school year you know since we are allowing them to keep it over the summer

do do we want the plan to go till the first day of school um that was something that i don't think we thought about in the that's going to bring up inspections and stuff again so i think it's going to have to go through i mean go through the end of the summer unless you're going to inspect all the notepads but you get the 8th the graders graders would be different the eighth graders will turn in so that would go until they turn it in at the end of the day otherwise they keep their notebooks into the next year kindergarten through seventh is gonna keep them in the email are you also gonna specify that this will be part of the registration for i was going to hold that until we have that registration discussion

yeah and talk about that that makes sense that's right it wouldn't necessarily be the remainder of the school year it would just be to the beginning of next year right if they're keeping them all summer can they understand that they can still turn around to get fixed um yeah i mean we will be here all summer so if they did bring it in to get it fixed but for those who did end up keeping it over the summer i mean they didn't bring it back until the first day of school and the first day of school it was oh i can't do my school work because it's broken so you would know because if they didn't come at the end of the school year then obviously it broke over break so i guess yeah that

would i don't know what would we say um you'll probably still cover all right i think we should do summer covering it for the summer too the whole point was yeah you're paying so that you don't have to worry about yeah what little kitty does yeah all right okay we'll do that all right thank you so i just need a motion to prove that can i please have a motion to approve the self-insured plan for student chromebook repair coverage with the editions discussed motion second ash and jerry yes did anybody have any feedback on the newsletter the big hello newsletter and you can just i know really what i'm looking for is are you the the content like the um i put on the first page because i think money is important to taxpayers so

i i want to provide something that's going to be readable and so i tried to make this as readable as possible so that's why you see pictures and um so it talks about the school bonds on the first page i just want to make sure there's no information on here that you don't want me to like put out there so the school bonds we have that our goal there is to get that bond levy to fall off on 24 or that 2024 levy you see on the there's some energy cost savings graph and i just put in there the strategic plan and the goals accomplishments over the last five years in a very summarized short way to do it so like i said i don't expect a lot of taxpayers going to read this thing

completely but i was hoping that it said it draws their eye enough that they will read a little bit of it well i think the first one the text bond is going to draw a lot of readers what was that i'm sorry the first um section the taxpayer bond i think people would really be interested yeah in reading that and then what do you mean payments will be significantly reduced do you have like a how much they might be significantly reduced oh so just be more specific there yeah okay yeah you know how like we do uh if your home is 150 000 you know your potential savings could be yeah i can be specific there also is this going to be folded in something like this so it's going to be a uh 11

by 17 i think is what she said this is uh we have somebody else doing this 11 by 17 it'll fold over to um how did she say that it's going to be mailed to every residence i was just thinking you may want to have this oh because if it's on the inside they're going to see yeah i got you this technical information that's kind of just going to look like yeah so you may want to figure out how it's going to be folded and then put that school bond i'll see if we can make that happen yeah because the financial improvements is kind of uh i mean it's an important detail but i don't know if it'll drive people to open it up in the copa19 update right yeah yeah i haven't seen it

in its actual 11 by 17 version and how it folds okay okay i'll see if she can do that and there's some other editing that's that i haven't done on this yet that's this minor editing but uh this is the general concept otherwise it looks good okay if you see anything like tonight or tomorrow that you want change just email me all right that's it cool uh the tax levy resolution so this didn't change from last month it's the same uh documents in there um if you want me to review any of that again i can't do that for you um but uh it's the exact same information last month didn't receive any uh questions from the public on that i'm open for any questions you want from me right or have for me right

now and or clarifications one thing i will share is that i i know the levy says that it's a 4.79 increase but current taxpayers don't see that increase they'll they're going to see the tax capped increase which would probably be around two and a half so that 4.79 will go on all the new property that came just comes into the district this year so not all taxpayers would see that then i'd like to know we're last in percent funded adequacy right what was that our attic we are adequately funded is last yeah out of all the elementary school districts in lake county yeah and those are all the elementary districts yeah we're on the bottom of that list does anybody else have any questions okay please have a motion to prove the tax levy resolutions
