to order this meeting of the school board of independent school district 624 with the clerk please call the roll Fahey here Kimball Mullin here new Burt here new master Wilson here chapman here yeah would you all please stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance all right we have before us an agenda for this evenings meeting is there a motion to approve so moved motion by mr. Mullin is there a second that's mrs. new master by a nose any discussion all in favor say aye aye opposed the agenda is approved we also have before us a consent agenda which consists of a number of items of a routine nature which appear before the school board on a monthly basis included in the consent agenda every single month is a resolution to accept gifts which
have been made to the school district this month is no exception we do have a resolution to accept a gift very generous gift in the amount of $3,200 from Jim Lake City of gem Lake to support Willow Lane elementary school so we appreciate that greatly having said that is there a motion to accept the consent agenda to move a motion by mr. Chapman is there a second second second this calls for a roll call vote Fahey aye Mullin aye Newberg I knew Master Wilson aye Chapman are you right and now it is time for public forum and that is an opportunity for any members of the public to address the board on any issues of interest or concern to them is there any member of the public who would like to address the board this
evening right seeing none we'll turn to our first information item c1 and that is our communication audit dr. Casimir check thank you madam chair like to invite Marissa vetti and Arie Babcock to present on the recently completed communications on it welcome is vety hello welcome well not welcome sorry thank you for having us to the board man board meeting madam chair members of the school board again a marissa vetti and Ari Babcock and we're here just to give a quick overview of a communications audit that was conducted this spring we worked with barb Nichol a barb Nicki public relations and I know that that you've probably read the the communications on it already as well but we thought we would come this evening and give a few highlights from the conversations and the process that
we went through with barb so we'll start with just the audit goals really was to create a baseline really look at what we do with our internal and our external communications and then look at what we could do for the future so in doing that we also wanted to look at what we do currently our existing communications tools and then how we could do things differently tweak what we do for the future and so the process consisted of can discuss engross and I know that she talked to board members as well as parents and community members and staff members we did an online survey both to staff members and to our parents we had a review barb looked at what we currently do some of our current communications materials and then looked at other surveys
that we've done in the past as well looking for that communications lens and then she had discussions with our leadership team as well one of the things that was was different maybe about the audit process here in White Bear is that it was really at the end of dr. Lovitz tenure and then at the beginning of dr. Kazmir Tech so both of them were involved in the leadership discussions and really trying to set dr. kazmo check up with a full knowing what's happening in the communications realm so that he could really take it to the next level and we could take it to the next level together so that was that was the the audit process that we had gone through in summary what barb came up with was that we do have a solid
program which is terrific and in kudos to everybody in the school district who is communicating with our families and with our community and that we do use a community I'm sorry a variety of communications methods and that we do have a strong team some of the things that she came up with as next steps were to look at some strategies and we've got seven of them here that could really help us take a program that we've got that strong and make it better and then to really of course exists on what we've got and fill in some gaps so we'll talk through some of the recommendations and then go in detail in in a couple of the fun ones not that they're not all fun but I do do a sort of a commercial for
what we do as well but the recommendations that she had was the first one to develop a communications strategic communications plan and really that is in line and it should be in line with our strategic plans so as our strategic planning process is wrapping up then we'll use what we've learned there and really tailor what we do in communications to really mirror what what we're doing in the as a result of the strategic planning process so additionally then refining existing communications tools to simplify prioritize and enhance and we'll talk a little bit more about that as well Ari and I will cover some things that we're doing and some things that we'll be doing differently in the future I'm and then just streamline and help our schools and our classrooms to reach out to our
community and reach out to our parents in different ways and so what we would see we know that our schools and our programs are really working on this as well but this is another way for us to recognize the work that they're doing and then help to support them in doing what they're doing as well and then maximizing the superintendent transition we've done a few fun things with Wayne stepping into the new role I mean we'll continue to do so as well strengthen it expand the existing district brand we were excited to hear and again it's it's the role of all of us and the work of all of us but barb had said you know I don't know of anybody who has a bigger or a stronger brand the orange the Bears everybody gets
that everyone walks around saying go Paris so that was really fun for us to hear but then to help others incorporate that into what they're doing in their schools and programs is important and it will be fun work for us in the future as well and then working on our non parent outreach some of the things that we already do include our activities past for our seniors our senior program in general with our communications I'm sorry Community Services office has a huge outreach both to our senior population and to the population in general in offering different courses and classes in that so just continuing to help support them in their efforts will be important as well as doing some of the things out of our office or out of the superintendent's office especially as we
have some initiatives coming up here in the near future so that'll be a really good way for us to bring in different members of the community to look at what we do and help us reshape reshape the future and then identifying additional ways to listen and engage again our community and our our schools and our programs are really doing a great job with this if we think about Izzie's and just other ways that we are having two-way conversations with families and with community members with students but just continuing to look at that and and do that from a communications lens is really important as well so as I promised we thought we this would be a good opportunity for us to do sort of a commercial for the waste that you all probably are already
engaged or are looking out for what's happening in the district but then also for any of our viewers to get a feel for the different ways that they can link into what's happening at the school district and the ways that we share things out so we'll go through just a few in terms back to the refining what we currently do so our website is from the feedback that we've gotten from people it's good and we know that we've professionally been asked by colleagues in other districts you know who do you use how did you go about doing what you do and the flip side though we do know that it is something a website is something that you always are tweaking which we're doing but it's always up for redesign really and so a short
wishlist for us would be to look at that it makes sense in the districts initiatives and it certainly would be beneficial to do responsive design into I know we always think that it's it's just innate and you can figure out where you get where you need to go by the conversations with people that we had it maybe could be a little more intuitive or we could try to make it a little more intuitive so I think a round two of our website when we get to it will be bigger and better than it is right now but we do really have a good base on social media is something that we have a good base with as well if you follow the district on Facebook or Twitter you'll know that we have of six to
four fact that we share out every morning that's a fun opportunity for us to share out either articles that the the school or the alumni students have been featured at upcoming events things that are coming things that have happened already just updates fun photos that we've shared and look for a few more to be coming as well but that's been a really fun way for people to be able to join us for the journey as the district and we have another project of our sleeve I'll let Ari talk about that now so coming up here back to school we're gonna be doing a hash tag back to school bear's face book challenge so we're gonna is it just it out okay and we're gonna encourage parents and community members to share a picture either if
it's their back-to-school pictures or if they're from their office to just kind of express why they're excited for the 2017 to 18 school year and they can do that for a chance to win a special delivery and we won't tell who is delivering we won't tell what they're delivering but stay tuned for that one but we think that that will be a really fun way to get some engagement and just get some fun again around the bear and celebrating the back to school these two would be together our e-newsletters that we do our bare essentials e-newsletter is internally right now and then the community e-newsletter of course is our external newsletter we are thinking about shifting around some things with that continuing to do the by weekly e-newsletter in a text version and then we
would also do the alternating video edition that we show we heard that staff members wish that there was something more tailored to them and so right now we have a little section of that tailored to them we're looking at opportunities to change that into a weekly a weekly send out through email that would be to staff so so look for that to possibly be changing starting in September with the start of the school year as well but the the e-newsletter itself would also continue to be mailed to families and mailed emailed to families and to staff members and be a lot of great information for our families one of the sort of a good problem to have is that we have so much great information in there because we have so many people who are
willing and excited to share with us the updates happening in their schools and programs that that people said I love it but it seems so long so we're trying to figure out how to balance the need of letting people read some quick tidbit but also being honoring of the work that people have done and they're excited and we're excited to share it out so we we have that delicate balance that we continue to seek and and we'll continue to do so so digital backpack is something that came up in conversations with with barb as well and it's not out of our communications office but it certainly is a communication that the district is sending out to families so we got some great input that the digital backpack the community services office when they do the
electronic fliers process can have some good feedback for that as well our calendar a barb literally wrote don't change it people love it so that was a good kudos to all of us into to our students for for just being so cute and the pictures really tell the story and I think that people appreciate that it's a lot of work I know for buildings to really land on the dates and and say okay this is what it is and and before we're thinking in that but it pays off our families do really appreciate our hard work and the printed project that comes out as a result of that and then last but not least is our parent leaders forum that is something that that dr. Leavitt had started and dr. Cosmo check is continuing to
meet monthly with our parent leaders so our PTA PTO leaders and other parents who are interested in joining us for a parent conversation once a month and and will continue to do that as well and they saw that that came out as beneficial as well and and again these are some of the things that we do we're looking forward to using the input that we had gotten from the audit and ideas that we had as well and and just doing it a little bit better which will help to grow our program and help to serve our families and so the evaluation of this process and and the the work that we do will be to continue to repeat every so often the online surveys that we've done and just as a tidbit kudos to the
community we just recently at the yesterday's a newsletter we sent out a survey asking related to the back-to-school bears and related to Facebook engagement and as of this morning we had 12 people who had done it already so it was sent out at 5 o'clock or 6 o'clock last night and we already had people who are doing it and it was not necessarily buried but it's really I'm I'm proud of our community and I'm excited that they are so willing and able to get back to us when we look for input and I appreciate that and it certainly helps us to do all of our jobs better additionally just again like we said aligning to the strategic plan will be important as we go and then just monitor continue to monitor what we're doing in
relation to the audit and the feedback that we've gotten and so with that we are open for any questions thank you for letting us share well thank you ms vetti mrs. Babcock I really applaud both of you for for recommending and going through the communications audit and then being committed to implementing the recommendations that they have made I also want to say I mean our the publications that that you have put out on behalf of the district have won multiple awards I mean they are just fabulous and don't change that calendar we won't write we promise does anyone else have any questions yes sir that's miss penny also mr. you're looking at wold power we were talking a lot about you know reaching out families get is paramount that we you know maintain effective communications
with families one thing I didn't see in any of the recommendations or any of the study was homes that don't speak English we actually do and so when we when we contacted Barb sort of a phase two of our plan we had very specifically let her know that we would be interested in doing that understanding in in sort of doing an audit in in that realm and how are we reaching out to all parents we didn't want it to get lost in this initial communications audit but it's on the docket for her she knows we're looking for for doing that yes and it would be sort of a Phase two and we're we're staffed now with our liaisons we're good to go I think for this year and that could be something that we do
going into this year thank you for asking so you have a broader net serving the entire district area so you might have to go through like community advocacy leaders or cultural group leaders or something like that we work with those same folks that Marissa will work with as well as any of our ell students and Families through our early childhood programs they need help and then on top of that targe evan sing with our senior program we also have the senior voice that gets information out as well as our housing guy transportation guide and then I believe our senior voices are quarterly and then this Paul we do have translation services available at the school conferences okay good I presumed we did but I have never heard a word about it you know so I
wasn't quite sure next question is going to immediately rebound a dr. Casimir check so everyone here can you know breathe a sigh of relief it was in the recommendations that he identify as quickly as possible his public persona and is this is somewhat tongue-in-cheek but have you decided on that okay if you if if dr. Casimir checker dr. Cawood would defer to us I will let you know I this is sort of like the the Treat in the delivery it's a secret but I can assure you that in uncut in the morning of convocation you'll get a glimpse into what dr. Kaz marchek's persona is and will be and then that after that is shared at our staff convocation event it will be shared out more broadly with the district as well so we're on
it and then a tiny little personal peeve we're not a corporate entity we don't produce products we don't manufacture we have no brand we have an identity and not a brand and I would I would like to see the use of the term brand for school identities you know drop that's just me speaking that's it thank you thank you anyone else have any questions or comments for Miss Betty in this Babcock mr. Mullins vertical first can mr. Mullen Oh mr. Chapman whoever starts talking first right miss very first of all I want to thank you very much I I enjoy getting all the information and follow follow the district on my Facebook and I really appreciate that the question I have it might be geared more towards dr. Kaiser ejector or our mr. garrison but
one of the things that I continue to hear about and we've seen in the report also was the the I don't want to say it's a dislike but the understanding that some teachers use Schoology some teachers use Google classroom some where's the skyward is there any talk about trying to figure out this piece I know one point we were talking about trying to work one password for all of them or something like that is that how's that coming along or where's that mr. garrison hmm yes a multi-phase process in part because we still have specific teachers that have really bought into specific communication strategies and so that kind of to move back into one it's just a longer process than I think maybe we're comfortable with but but really important for the staff to feel
like the effort that they put into learning platforms into building content is viable we do have the single sign-on solution for parents which we think it's a really good initial step and then we've got with the with our new data system illuminate that we're bringing in I think that's can help to be a single place where people can see their student data so I think a couple of things happening this fall that'll help we still have Schoology and Google classroom out there and they're gonna work with buildings to kind of come up with a consistent voice about what's happening but we're not prepared to get rid of either one at this time and as a maybe as a follow up than you and not to say hey listen it's got to be this time timeline
but do you have a kind of a timeline where we can expect to be into something just one or in also is the information getting out there about the single sign I'm not saying nailed down just give me something that as parents come to me and they ask hey we'll win right that way I can give them at least an answer and say is it if it's next year than its next year I just need something to hold on to yeah the single sign-on will launch this fall for parents we have already had teachers and students using it we had them using it throughout the spring and summer in terms of a singular solution I can't give you a decision up here but I think part of that will come through the through our process
this fall of really looking strategically about how we want to communicate as a district and part of it is just going to come with working through individual buildings to see what works best for them that won't be a decision that comes out of the tech department to say this is the thing it's gonna be a cooperative decision about how to best communicate with families from a building level well first off I want to thank both of you Ari and Marissa and and Barb Nichol I think she did a phenomenal job of the three of he did in terms of pulling this together I was pleasantly very much surprised to see just how in-depth it was I wasn't sure you know initially if it was going to be more touching the surface or how in-depth but
it really got in there and I think it does address a lot of the issues both what's what's working what parents like what the community likes and also areas for improvement so first off I want to just thank you for that piggybacking on what mr. Mullen had talked about or asked about yes mr. garrison if you could back to you relative to the process of determining what kind of applications are going to be used you'd mention you know what the individual buildings want is this gonna be on a building by building basis or I guess you know a little more feel and I and again I'm not necessarily looking for everything tonight but just some idea of what your thought process if you've had a chance to think that far what what the process is
going to be like as far as you know whether it's gonna be Schoology Google Docs or something else or some combination if you could just speak to how you're gonna arrive at that a little bit if you've got some ideas specifically related to Schoology it seems to be breaking out by level where elementary schools are using Schoology less and less middle school seems to be kind of in the middle and high school is using Schoology quite a bit and so you know I think it I think it would be okay if they came out by level like that but part of what's going to help us make that decision is one of the reasons that a lot of high school teachers are using school G right now is that they've got a lot of content
in there there's the possibility to migrate some of that content over to illuminate and and we see a lot of strength in that program we need to wait to see how the year gets underway and how teachers react to that and if it is as easy to use as we've perceived it to be from the get-go if it is and that's an easy transition I think it would be I think it would be an easier transition for us to move away from a Schoology at the upper level I know there's a lot of sea of North and South teachers that really depend on that for and they built they've spent years building curriculum in there so it's it's a it's a harder thing to pull away at Elementary where I was more like a classroom
website and there wasn't a lot of content built in at the elementary level it was an easier thing to step away from and move into something like a Google classroom so I envisioned the way it sounds this is going to be very heavily weighted by staff input and recommendations and suggestions rather than kind of been a microcosm from administration saying this is the way it's going to be there's going to be a collaborative effort most certainly his new master I think you're next well that was sort of my feeling I was encouraged to hear that it was not going to be a technology decision and we that it's based on curricular needs and my only thought as I'm listening to this discussion is that neither Schoology nor Google had everything or was a good fit
for everybody and whether or not this new product is who knows yet you're doing a beta version or test of it I assume at some point so people can really make some judgment but I'm hoping you know maybe someday something come out but until that time the thousands of hours of work I know North Campus people put on and the push to have a quote robust presence in Schoology was there from the get-go top-down so it was expected and people got used to it and the kids are used to it so I can see that it's a different maybe parents have a harder transition going to a different grade level and they might understand it better if they understand that the content is different thankee yeah a little having used skyward in Schoology and retiring
before google classroom and I was just starting to look at it I mean originally skyward I was one of the original people trained in skyward and then trained staff and it was basically first used for attendance grading and then we could upload assignments to it and it was something that you only had access to your classes and then when Schoology came in you could collaborate with your colleagues on it and share and put information in for the kids so I could work much with my seventh grade colleague and at one stage we were told stop uploading assignments in skyward only do it in Schoology because we want to train the parents to access Schoology and then we were told mid-year oh sorry go back and use skyward too because some parents are asking you know
and I was just doing both I was uploading in Skyward and working on Schoology because I wanted to find out how to use it so Matisse um you know staff choice in this also in terms of what staff members are comfortable with because there's always going to be something new coming down the tubes and sometimes it's like oh look at me what I can do where I was always what's going to be best for the kids in the classroom and often at conferences i sat with parents and showed them how to access it and then they said oh great now I understand how to do it but there can't be I know as you're talking about can't be one decree that everyone will use this there has to be some choice in it in terms
of whether you can collaborate with colleagues and then the skyward is still there because we're using it as our grading system our attendance system our referral system etc so any other questions or discussion well miss Betty MS Babcock thank you and thank you to our mystery guest on list asan this discussion item mark garrison thank you all right we have no discussion items tonight so we'll go to our first operational item e1 Oh superintendent's report second month and I'm already blowing you off that's not a not a good sign dr. Casper check I'm sorry all right thank you madam chair I think all right we are excited to soon begin the 2017-18 school year school supply lists are available with the end of summer comes the start of school supply shopping season and the visual
school supply lists are currently available on the district website that addresses WWI sd6 to four org finding information about open houses welcome back and transition activities on the individual school websites the skyward annual online family update will will open this week so on the 18th for elementary students and on the 15th for middle school and high school students this is an important thing to note as we march toward the first day of school so we're excited to welcome students in September with days of school beginning September 5th or middle school and high school students September 6th for our students in grades 1 through 5 and September 7th for our incoming kindergartners I want to emphasize that again our the first day of school for grades one through five is on the 6th so that that
Wednesday so parents should pay particular attention to that that's a change from previous years right our middle school students have a new after-school option this year as the district is kicking off a flex middle school program find information about the program on the district's Community Education website and enjoy a taste of the students experiences in this fun video that debuted this in this weekend's enewsletter [Applause] [Music] Thank You mr. community members age 65 and older are invited to apply for our senior activity pass which allows free entry into a variety of activities for entertainment home athletic contests concerts and theater productions to name a few if you'd like to be added to the list call the superintendent's office at six five one four zero seven seven five six three to request a free activity pass
and a 2017-18 district activities calendar White Bear Lake area schools is currently hiring a variety of positions for the 2017-18 school year find employment opportunities on the district's website enjoying white bear nation Minnesota comprehensive assessment results were released recently by the by the state the district continues to outperform the state and MCA results and we continue to implement long-term initiatives committed to success for all students additional information will be shared at future school board meetings and last but not least I'm happy to report that the calendars are in the final the calendars are in the final stage of production and will be arriving in families mailboxes very soon community members who would like a copy can stop by any of our district schools in September or call six five one four zero seven seven five
six three to request one to be mailed to their home alright now we'll turn to our first operational item e1 and that is action on Northeast Metro intermediate school district 916 long-term facility maintenance budget and proportionate share dr. Casimir check thank you madam chair members of the board so this is an annual approval item for member districts of intermediate district 916 the white bear lakes proportionate share of project costs for fiscal years 2018 and 2019 is twenty six thousand two hundred ninety six dollars and forty three cents the primary cost driver with for this particular for this particular year is the asbestos abatement at Capitol View as part of the larger facilities projects going on with 9/16 in future years we expect this figure to be considerably less because of the the older facilities are
being taken offline and being replaced with newer facilities so in the future you'll see this figure go down considerably so with that I'm open to any questions about this but again this is an annual this is an annual approval item that allows members school districts to levy the amount of their proportionate share for them for the past the long-term facilities maintenance maintenance costs for Intermediate School District 916 thank you dr. Casper check I won't ask the clerk to read the whole resolution into the record it's quite lengthy but I will entertain a motion to approve the resolution as it appears in our board packet approving northeast Metro Intermediate School District number 916 s long-term facility maintenance budget and authorizing the inclusion of a proportionate share of those projects in the district's application for a long-term
facility maintenance revenue as presented is there a motion moved motion by mr. Wilson is there a second second by misny master any questions for dr. Cosmo cheque or any discussion mr. Wilson yeah just as a point of clarity this is maintenance only so when you were saying that the older buildings will be replaced by newer ones we would not share a portion of the cost of new construction would we that's a that's a different that this is a particular way of financing long term facilities maintenance maintenance things things like roofs and parking lots and things like that you know so when when the facilities are in line there will be a few years before significant facilities maintenance issues arise that would that would cause our costs to go up again so you're saying we would
share a part of the cost for a new construction there yep that but that was under a separate that that isn't part of this static but not this yes agreement correct yes they mechanism by which 9/16 raises money for new construction is different than what it is for the independent school districts but it really it would require all 14 of the member districts to vote unanimously to approve the funding for the new construction and that's what we have done with both Karner blue okay eight facility up in blaine and in the new k-8 facility in Lake Elmo Penkala yes yes 9/16 does lease part of South Campus for use in their in their programming any other questions for dr. Casimir check all right we have a motion and a second this is a financial matter
so we'll ask for a roll call vote Fahey aye Mullin aye Newberg I know master I Wilson aye Chapman aye the motion carries we'll turn to the next item e to and that's action on a resolution relating to the election of school board members and calling the school district general election on November 7 2017 dr. Casimir check thank you madam chair mr. Mauer we'll cover this particular item yeah good madam chair members of the board so we contract with Ramsey County to run all of our elections last week we had Joel Ramsey the county elections manager come out to meet with us just to connect and reaffirm our responsibilities both on the district side and the county side as the upcoming elections are coming up and we want to make sure that we have everything
in position and ready to go last week he reaffirmed that we are all on the same page were in line and the timeline for what we have to complete the one notice that what an RN that we have to take care of was I need to contact which I have left a message for him last week Chris Samuel the county auditor to supply us with a list of the property tax payers in our district is we need to send out a property taxpayer notification sometime between the dates of October 18th and the 23rd so once we receive that list from him we will do our part to send all those mailings out within that time period other than that the county will take care of all the notifications with the local newspapers supply all the
election judges and all the other components that to go into running the election on November 8th they will send us the the abstract of the results of the election and then we will canvas the results on our November 13th board meeting thank you mr. Marr any other presentation or all right well let's get the motion on the record first so we it's recommended that we move to approve the resolution relating to the election of school board members and calling the school district general election as presented is there a motion to approve so motion by Ms Fahey is there a second I'll second that any questions for either mr. Maurer or mr. wold who was waiting expectantly behind him yeah his new master had one and it came up the last time we had an election
what does someone do before an absentee ballot because that never got figured out last time well he threw a lot of dates at us I just closed my book here absentee voting is that begins on the 22nd of September if I recall correctly yeah big question the last time and I know because we had a family member that wasn't it down and wanted to vote and the big question was did you have to go down to Plato Boulevard and they said no but no one vocally had a place that you could pick up a ballot and vote so that was the question do people need to go to Plato Boulevard to the Ramsey County Center there there's two different timeframes so the answer is yes and no if I remember correctly dr. Cosby check you
correct me if I'm wrong there there's two different time periods I don't remember off the top of my head but they should be on the county election website so there is a time frame where the absentee voters will have to go down or can go down to the Ramsey County Building at st. Paul there will also be a believe you said three locations you know by October 31 through November 6 is a voting early option which isn't quite the same as absentee but the voting early option one of the sites is the White Bear Lake library downtown it's one of the sites so all of that information will will be shared out we'll make that information available so the information about absentee voting and a voting early option will be part of our informational materials
that we share out the community I just wondered because I didn't read it in the description there's not too many things on this particular right but they do they do have the absentee and the early voting he anticipates a larger they said they've been seeing more more community members and citizens going out voting early now than they ever have before so any other questions for mr. Moore yzma's Reber does she have um is River reports that you can also do it by mail that would be requesting the absentee ballot ahead of time they send it out if yep yep she laid out the process good from the cheap seats thank you misery burr any other questions for MS Reaper or mr. Barr all right seeing none we have a motion and a second let's just
to be safe let's do a roll call vote Fahey aye Mullin I know Burke I know master I Wilson aye Chapman our net motion carries Thank You mr. Mara we'll turn to our next item III and that's action on a resolution relating to renewing the expiring referendum revenue authorization of the school district and calling an election thereon dr. Casimir check or mr. wold I will welcome mr. wall to the Bremen he will take this one thank you madam chair members of the board at our July meeting you reviewed parameters for an upcoming levee renewal authorization and that was 1538 dollars and 31 cents per pupil unit the levy total of total value of the levy would be 14 million two hundred fifty eight thousand seven hundred thirty-five dollars that constitutes about thirteen just over 13%
of the annual budget for the school district the levy has an inflationary adjuster that's that level is indicated to us by the Minnesota Department of Education using the Consumer Price Index just so happens that that level has dropped a little bit this summer and so the wavery the levy amount per pupil you notice is just a slightly lower than what we had anticipated the length of the levy as discussed in July would be 10 years and the tax impact of the level of the levy there'd be no negative tax impact as this is just a renewal of an existing operating levy Thank You mr. wold before he put it open for questions we do have a recommend recommendation that we approve the resolution relating to renewing the expiring referendum revenue authorization of the school district
and calling an election thereon as presented in our materials is there a motion to approve no moved a motion by mr. Wilson is there a second second by news new master any questions for mr. wold regarding this yes mr. Chapman mr. wold could you just mention again what the why the short or small reduction was from what was estimated in July - now what accounts for that yes when when estimating the value of the levy per pupil unit consumer price indexes is used when that level drops a little bit the value of the level of the levy will drop a little bit and it just so happened to drop just just slightly yeah any other questions for mr. wold right we have a motion and a second let's have a roll call vote on this
as well Fahey I Mullin all right Newburg I knew master I Wilson all right Chapman oh that motion carries thank you mr. wold our next operational item is action on the MacPhail Center for music partnership dr. Casimir check I thank you madam chair local syrup all that's in it as well again and then if there are questions miss Perrone Manella help answer some of those if there are other questions so this is a partnership that dates back to 2006 MacPhail provides piano lessons and violin lessons to various grades at Birch Lake Elementary School this contract is consistent with what we've had in the past and the net cost in the district is about $26,000 so come back to you have a recommendation that we approve the partnership the renewal of the partnership agreement with macphails
Center for music for 2017 to 2018 consistent with the agreement in our materials is there a motion to approve they'll move motion by mr. Mullin is there a second that can second by mr. Fahey any questions for I'm is Paul regarding this or for dr. Casimir check yes mr. Chapman last year what was the do we recall what the amount was the net amount to the district was compared to it was it was very close to this and once I don't know exactly what it wasn't year ago was very close to this though then we adjusted the coast last year and I believe we mean it remain the same if you I don't know that I could find it in 30 seconds but I could get I could follow up with you it's very similar
oh yeah very close any other questions then we have a motion and a second this calls for a roll call vote heyhe aye Mullin aye Newberg I know master I Wilson abstain gentlemen why that motion carries we'll turn to our final operational item and that is the approval of the nutrition services grants dr. Casimir check Mr Wong nutrition services apply for and received three quipment grants all of which are described in your board packet like to just acknowledge our director of nutrition services bridget lane for actively seeking out these grants and securing three really important grants that that total eighty six thousand seven hundred seventy five dollars the first grant is the National School Lunch Program equipment grant from the USDA that's a 25 thousand dollar grant it's used to purchase salad bar serving land
equipment for Central Middle School the grant will cover 80% of the cost of that project so Central Middle School will and be enjoying new serving equipment for their salad bar the second grant is the Winston industries equipment grant from Winston industries and the new school nutrition foundation that will provide ten pieces of Winston industries hot holding equipment that's a grant of fifty one thousand seven hundred seventy five dollars so in the kitchen they'll prepare foods and they'll hold it in the in the holding equipment it also some of it will be used for transporting food from site to site maintaining just the accurate temperature as required for those foods equipment from this grant will go to Hue Elementary Willow elementary central middle skeletal school in both campuses south and north campus of our high school
and south and north we'll have transport pieces the third grant taking advantage of the Super Bowl coming to town is the super school breakfast grant from the Minnesota super bowl Legacy Fund and Midwest dairy that told us ten thousand dollars and that grant will fund implementation of school breakfast outside the cafeterias at north and south it'll provide equipment for point of sale so students will be I'll enter the atrium at self campus and have an option to purchase breakfast food just as they enter the door there at North Campus that have an opportunity to purchase breakfast food after first hour between the first and second hour classes and so our hope is that we'll make an adjustment of about five percent of our high school students accessing breakfast on our campus our goal is to
get that number up to fifteen percent which is still below the number of free and reduced students that we serve and so we're hoping that students would qualify for those services we'll be assured a good breakfast when they arrive to school every day so that was a ten thousand dollar grant and we'll be starting that program right away this well thank you mr. wold operational items to accept grants are my favorite kinds to vote on so we have a recommendation that we accept three grants the National School Lunch Program equipment grant for twenty five thousand the Winston industries equipment grant for fifty one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five dollars and the super school breakfast grant for ten thousand dollars is there a motion to approve so moved ocean by mr. Chapman is there a second
second second by mr. Wilson any questions for mr. Waldrop regarding this all right we have a motion and a second this calls for a roll call vote Fahey aye Mullin all right Newburg I knew master I Wilson aye Chapman aye and the motion carries so our final item on the agenda is board forum an opportunity for board members to share with each other and the public any information about upcoming events or anything else that their heart desires does anyone have anything for board forum tonight mr. Wilson no one laughed too loudly but I was doing some track work Sunday at South Campus and I told you and I gotta tell you the condition of white bear Stadium the plank is absolutely stellar it's a very accommodating entrance when you arrive it looks comfortable I'm sure
it is as much as bleachers can be but it is so attractive the field I thought was artificial until I saw a couple of weeds growing in it but I mean it's absolutely manicured I think there's a new bear logo on the west end I don't ever remember seeing one on the grass but on the other side of the track from the football field and soccer field but it is it like I said an absolutely supreme shape the new press box looks great can't wait to get up there sometime and take a little tour of it but kudos to the grounds crew you know in the South Campus absolutely great performances there there's a very impressive stadium and field anyone else yes yes no it's not they had some weeds coming up I have some
green trim along the edge I do remember approving artificial turf okay yeah I mean it's great and I know when we approve putting that artificial turf and it allows so many teams and individuals to be using that field on a much more frequent basis we don't to worry about damage to the grass and the grounds song that was cracks in great shape as well oh yeah excellent does anyone else have anything for board forum mr. Mullen first of all I want to congratulate this year we had 12 students go through the Minnesota Trades Academy and their achievement ceremony is this Friday so I want to congratulate all of them and say job well done and then in in the absence of mr.
