for any public comments or delegations. We'll hear a presentation by transportation coordinator Mike Nelson on our bus routing software. That might have to be pushed back because he was ready to go and then he ended up with a visitor who's doing some maintenance on our gas pumps which requires him to be there at the time. They were supposed to be here at 11:30 or so and they showed up just before the board meeting. So I told him that as soon as he's done, if we're still meeting, he can come and do his presentation. Then if not, we'll have to push presentation the next board meeting or some other board meeting. After uh that we will review the latest reports, including a report on finance and uh enrollment. After that, we'll move into the consent agenda,
which includes approving the minutes from the September 24th board meeting, followed by a motion for one resignation, one motion for a retirement, two motions for new hires. The board will then approve additions to the sublist as attached. There's no need for a close session at this board meeting. The board will then move into the only action item on the agenda which is approving the bills and wires for the month of August. Prime start September. That wraps up our board meeting. Thank you. Okay. Approval of agenda. >> Motion to approve. >> Okay. Motion by Tom. >> I'll second. email approve the October 165. Further discussion hearing none. All those in favor say I. >> I just didn't call anybody or anything. Yeah. Okay. Um, we got a visitor for public comments. >> Yeah. >> Public comments
and delegations. Um, she explained Mike might might be here during the meeting. If not, the next one we have it. >> Y >> would you want to share something or are you just here to listen in or >> you're welcome to speak if you'd like. I do uh before you start though if I could read something. Uh thank you for participating in the public participation portion of the meeting today. Please share your thoughts. We allow up to five minutes for thoughts. I'll monitor that for you with a timer. And if your time is up, when you're in the middle of a sentence, feel free to finish your sentence and and then we can wrap up. Please bear in mind that the public participation portion is not a conversation. It's your chance to share your thoughts.
>> Also, an employer's reputation is important. So, if you're here to criticize an employee, please refrain from a name. If you use names, we'll have to ask you to to hang it up. Finally, since boards are not administrators, they're not involved in the daily administration. So, if you hear about a concern or a complaint but haven't pursued the chain of command, we ask that you speak to a teacher or principal first, but I think you're just here to talk about the program, right? >> So, go right ahead. Thank you. Uh, >> let me introduce myself. My name is Daryl Kingird. I'm from the Kona district. uh considered an elder I guess but um I am a uh teacher in the cultural language. I don't know if you guys I did put in an application to
be a teacher in Ponya. I was applying for that and I wasn't going to bother with it until we've had some el other elders coming up to me asking me to join the team in NEA as a language speaker and a language teacher and I wasn't going to do that because I am working on a two three other programs off the reservation but what I hear is that she's not appropriately speaking to the children and fluent accent way and the kids are not learning anything in the language itself and me myself I'm a language mover. Uh I don't know if you guys seen my resume if they gave you guys one or not but I wanted to show you my resume and pass it on the other way. >> Just so you know the board's
not involved in hiring. So yeah but uh but >> just in consideration that's why I was wondering uh why am I here? Why are you here? >> Yeah, >> that was my question for you. Um, >> why are you here? >> I put in an app. >> That was last week, right? >> Yes. And next thing you know, they said I got to be at the board meeting. >> Oh, why? >> Oh, that's a misunderstanding. >> Sorry about that. There must have been something we said or somebody said that >> I thought I was in trouble already. >> Oh, no. >> Thank you for being here. No, we're in the morning. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. But um I did apply for the teacher position >> and um I have 40 years of experience >> of cultural
coordinating and I was hired to the Michigan state. I was able to work at any institution in the state of Michigan, school, colleges, whatever they wanted me to do. and um I was certified through their state and then I come home. I've been working out of uh the surrounding reservations and North Dakota. I was hired in North Dakota as a master speaker for the Turtle Mountains Community College. And I just wanted to elaborate a little bit about that because um I what I know is that my children been going to school for the past three four years. They haven't learned anything in our cultural language department cuz I come home, they come home every day and I ask them what they learn. They said, "No, we don't only do flashcards and they don't tell us
how to say it." And they give us films. Oh, I'm going to step in and help move that language like I've always did every place I look. And if you see my resume, um, I've been to a lot of places with the language itself and that's what they hired me for. So, my resume should speak for itself. Being a teacher coordinator starting out 41 years ago in the area of Minneapolis, Southside, I started out there called coordinator and I had a I had a team of 19 students, male and female, as a dance troop. And that ain't the only one I've built. I've also built drum groups from the school I work with right along with the language. So me as a speaker and as a language holder, ceremonial holder, I would like to see
our children and learn the same thing. >> We've uh sat on the phone with you, right? We called a couple. >> Yeah. Yeah. We open a little way together. >> Remember now? >> Yeah. Right now. Go ahead. >> That is um that is why I'm here. And the package that I use would be simple. We leave it on the learn repetitively. Making sure they do have enough sentences through the month to learn and they have learned like that is the process and by the time the end of year comes the students are able to stand up and speak to whomever addresses them in the language. That would be a guarantee if you set me in Paneima and that way they learned who we are and who we are in Ponya as a community because I
was born and raised there and that's where I got the language from too was from our elders in the psalms. So I'd like to be five minutes. >> Oh, just just start. >> Timing is good. keep this. >> Oh yeah, you can. >> You have references? >> Yes. Go ahead. >> You have references we can call from the community. >> Oh yeah. >> Where are they? >> Um I didn't bring them with the with the thing there because I thought they would already gave you guys one. And the references that I have, they're more more or less on the application I >> Yeah, board members don't generally get uh references or applications or resumes because they don't do the hiring other than hiring principles and superintendants. But our program people OLC application >> do the
hiring. >> We get applications. We get everything. >> Yeah. After the process, but you're not not before the process when once you are like today now there's two people we're hiring. We take a look. So >> I can >> thank you. I I'd like to remove that individual from the sublist. He's on the addition for the sublist and I'd like to have him removed from that. Okay. When we when we get to the consent then we'll get to that. >> Okay. We're doing report. Uh Mike Nelson isn't here yet. So, >> nope. Uh when when Donald came in, he whispered an update. He said he's still in his meeting. >> So we'll go and meet. >> So u refer you to uh the reports section the enrollment report and u the enrollment report pretty much
reflects what we expected. If you remember last month, I mentioned that we were up and if you look at the the uh 2024, the very first column 1565 and then when we we came out with our official October 1st report by the 10th it was down 45. It always does that. We always have a falls reading. Willy can tell you that or Sherry can tell you that. We see that every year. This year the same thing happened. We were at 1567 on September 18th column before the one that's yellow and then we dropped 54 down to 1513. So we're still three more than we were last year at this time. But um >> that's uh the good news is that we're we were expecting this and now that 1513 is the number that we will
work with and hope to hold on to. Last year we lost a couple here and there each month and then by about March or April we began to gain some back but with the work that we're doing with our peer leadership and PBIS we hope that the numbers will stay steady again like they did last year for the most part. >> Yes. >> Um last year and this year it's like uh the drop from September to October it's the majority of it's in the high school. Is there are you able to I guess elaborate on that? Um >> I'm not quite sure. I think it's partly due to the fact that there's false readings or students saying they're going to come and then they don't. But uh I can try to find out where >>
possible that it's like a thing where we have uh students enrolled and then come to find out they're actually going to a different high school, right? Situation. >> Yep. They uh they may enroll just to get their name in here and then decide before the school year starts. >> Yeah. >> To go somewhere else. But we >> just curious if it's like if for some reason we have a ton of high school kids dropping out personal or if it's more of like a administrative thing where they get the numbers more correct. >> Yeah. It what I'm told every year and Willie tracks this with his budget because he wants to it all affects our income. He said it's always that way and it's usually administrative what we call phantom numbers at the first month of
the year. Then by the time things set the dust settles and we actually can account for the students takes about a month to figure that out then we know who's really here. It is generally administrative. >> Right. Thank you. >> Yeah. Thank you. >> So good question on that. So, this has been an ongoing issue with the when did those reports go into like Minnesota State High School League because that's got a big big impact on our placement within sports. >> Yep. October 1st. So, see, and that's >> that's the official date, but it doesn't affect the high school league. It doesn't affect us >> for a whole for a couple years. It's down the years, but I know that happened last time because we got moved up because the enrollment numbers and then >>
as the year went on, those enrollment numbers dropped and it still affected us as far as having to move from single A to double A and it does hurt, but >> Y right >> I think our our 100% reduced helps us now. It does. It did in the past. But what happened was was because the numbers were so high. >> We got moved up and that it it it caused a big deal where I know Nola was having to go down and talk to them because numbers that got reported that weren't the right numbers. So we got moved up to doublea for a couple of years then moved down then moved back up because th those reportings that were coming out to them was affecting that. >> So >> kind of a double-edged sword. You
want numbers that you don't want end up playing teams like >> Morehead. >> Yeah. >> Well, it's not I mean not just that. It's just the fact that those numbers when they come out like that because we don't know what the true numbers are until after like you said after October 1st it affects us in a major way as far as well I don't want to just put it all athletic but it just it affects us >> big time >> but if we uh generally by once we get to October 1 then we know that we're number accurate and Okay. >> But you you mentioned it might have been something that happened that was total snap with numbers. >> Yeah. Somebody dropped the ball and the correct number >> cuz right now I think our
numbers are still 2A but you can pretty soon go down. >> Right. >> That's where we're at. >> Yep. >> Still 200. >> Well, see that was the thing was we were at I know originally we were like at 279 or something like that. right around that number, but because of our free and reduced, which was 100% it, it dropped us down the single way. But now that when they're reporting the numbers as three or four something, even when I free and reduce, it still puts us away, but it should still >> something else. >> But that's something >> something else we need to be talking about. Something else I can mention here is that um principal Shelley at the high school did indicate that some of the numbers if we go down are because
of a transfer or a switch from the high school into the ALC. So if you look at ALC 912 row about five six rows down ALC 912 that actually went up 12. So, we really didn't lose those 12. We didn't lose from our district. They just switched from the high school general setting to ALC. And so, when you see numbers at the high school going down 47, it's really only 35. And then the other 35 that 35 is probably is part of that 54 bigger number and that's more administrative. But that's a partial answer for your high school question. And related to that, if you want to jump over to the next report, the finance report, share with you that our numbers are still solid. This is a month when our beginning balance is a
little bit higher. Our ending balance is dipped. We uh have about a little over $4,000 dip in the ending balance, but that's simply because of expenditures for this month outweighing income. For most of the uh summer, we had income outweighing expenditure. Now that we're in school, our expenditures are picking up a little bit more. But that's not anything that's alarming. Next month, we'll be back in shape again. It's just that we go up and down, up and down, but our ending balance is still very solid. $30,617,000 and change. So, we continue to be the uh the envy of many school districts that have these kind of fun. So, everything is in order there. Um then if I could throw in one last couple of items as a report. Um Chris had asked that I share
a little bit about what we did as a district for Indigenous People's Day. So I want to show you a couple of pieces here that uh fill you in on what was done largely across the district. the elementary and uh and some of the high school classes did this and uh this PowerPoint is sort of a an outline of topics that was that were covered on that day. So uh of course we have the date there and then a discussion for many students what does it mean? What is being what is indigenous? What does it mean to you? And uh then we had several videos. That was one discussion question. You know, again, what does resilience mean to you? Um exploring resilience and being indigenous. Then some cultural information about the four directions and what
they mean. Uh four medicines, four walks of life, four colors of man, four seasons. an opportunity, an option to make a medicine wheel with your class. Some hands-on activities, why dance styles are important and what those different styles are. Opportunity for students to learn that at our uh APEC meeting last night when we asked parents and guardians and grandparents, what would you like to see? that came up several times of course is more language and more knowledge of culture. So this is an example of of what we we're doing that um cultural identity questions spiritual and healing purposes storytelling and history community celebration learning about the eight indigenous dances. Couple more slides here. What is wild rice and how is it harvested? Of course, we've already gone through that part, the Manumaniki experience here outside.
So, that was all it's always good. Lessons about again traditional foods and fruits. And then a YouTube video students could watch if they want. Then at the high school, in addition to some of this, uh, Rob May, and by the way, this is something that Mr. West put together as a guide as a culturist and a language teacher over at the elementary at the high school. Rob May put together a couple of the YouTube videos on on birding, hunting and uh the cultural traditions and how to hunt birds. So lots of things happened that day in different uh different times and different classes and different opportunities. So it was uh when people ask you know what did you do? I say, "Well, we always every day do indigenous people's day, but it was an extra
dose on that day." An opportunity for students to reflect and learn about their culture. They were proud of you. >> Understand? >> This was everywhere. >> Yep. Across the district. So, >> I I asked you because I got a question. I said that NEAS did a better job than we did uh indigenous So >> I said they only brought Thomas. >> That's why I was better. >> Well, we did a better job. My little girl, she come home. She goes, "Mom, I want I'm going show you." I did smoke dancing. >> Yeah. >> And she started doing the new dance and the other girl started singing >> and then she kept dancing and the other girl got up and danced and they were doing the smoke dance >> spinning and and she's a third grader,
third and fourth grade. And so I just want to share we did really well cuz I never teached them smoke dancing. >> I wonder if they got it off that. >> Yep. They got it. Yep. And she was just going spinning and like she knew how to do the moves. >> So I just want to share >> I seen kids our teachers hanging up the medicine wheel thing. >> Yeah. >> Back there. But but see I didn't know what went on over here. And that's where the comment was from. >> Oh >> yeah. We did that. So next year Tom's number will be >> I just got a quick question on that. So like with the culture and I know it's hard but I was just um we had a game guess probably not Manomomen
Manomomen. So when I was heading to that game it was just during their rising season. So I was asking because I didn't know what was going on. I just seen a bunch of canoes heading to a white earth. But I asked about that and I didn't know that these schools give those kids that time because it's considered a cultural activity that they that they uh celebrate. And I'm wondering how do we introduce like for Red Lake like fishing or things like that without that effect in school? I was just thinking about that because like they were it was a lot of kids out there doing that ricing whenever they were doing the ricing and that was like a week long thing but they got they got credit for doing it because it was a cultural
activity >> but I don't know how can we introduce that like when hunting season comes up because of certain things that they need to know. I mean, not all the kids are going to go, I'm pretty sure. But the ones that do need to be out there, how do we >> I can tell you that we do we do that, you know, we take kids and do canoe ceremonies. Um, offer them the opportunity, you know, and come sugar bush. Kids go out and collect and see and watch it get distilled down. They have those opportunities. The the challenge is yes, they're gone for half a day or a day or maybe two days. >> But if we plan for that and make sure they stay up to date with all their other homework, >> then
they can be gone for a day or two. And then sometimes what they're asked to do is to give a report or write something up. And then they they're still learning some traditional things like how to write how to do a PowerPoint. So, they're not only learning about the cultural activity, they're learning about how to write a report or maybe how to do some math where they can quantify here's what we start with with the uh this app, here's what we end with, how many times reduces that >> basic math questions. That's more elementary, but >> but we do a lot of that. Okay. >> And try hard to make sure we introduce that because that's so important. I've learned. >> Yeah. I think lost a lot of kids because of that. Once they get
out and they start hunting and fishing, >> then they're learning the lake and learning those cultural deals. >> Yeah. >> They kind of school ain't for me after that. >> Yeah, it was just a question. I'm sorry. >> Oh, thank you. Good question. Okay. Um, I wanted to mention one other thing this morning heading for work. I get a call about 6:45 that there's a gas leak maybe in Pima School. So, if you happen to hear anything like that or if you happen to drive by see firet trucks at 7 in the morning, there was a uh not even sure if it was a leak, but there was a new heater put in. And sometimes when you do that, it smells like propane. So, we called the fire department. They showed up and they shut
off the gas and they went around the building with their gadgets that measure natural gas or propane and every reading came up as a zero. But based on the information the fire department gave us, we were able to have school. But we were prepared to initiate our first ever probably in a long time evacuation and have school somewhere else or just cancel school. But it's better to have school somewhere else. So we were going to maybe initiate reaching out to the club up there, the whole school there and maybe it wouldn't have had to be for the whole day for the first couple hours till the building cleared if there really had been propane. That's another example of why it's helpful to have a plan in place and to have these partnerships where you know
if you can't have school because of a threat of some sort in the building you can go to some other place and evacuate to that building. So um Tom I might be reaching out to you sometime in the next week or two because there were two places the tribe did identify for this building. One was the club and the other one is humanity. So, >> would it be possible to to connect with you and maybe walk to see the club building looks like? I've been in the entryway, but I've never seen the whole building. So, see if it would be suitable. Might not be as big as humanity. Not going to be any past humanities. Okay. >> Yeah. talking with other um people about this. It might be a a dual thing. One one chunk
of kids in the club, one chunk of kids in the humanities, but our building is I guess square foot wise smaller, but we do have four bathrooms as opposed to the two over at the humanities. So, yeah. >> Yeah. Maybe middle school at one, high school at the other. >> High school smaller, so maybe they go to the club. Yeah. Okay. Thank you. wraps up my reports then for today. >> Okay. Consent agenda for October 15, 2025. >> I have a question on the addition to the sublist. I don't know if we can vote on that separately or I want it removed. So you wanted one one of them removed from that list or either voted on it separately. I >> think the traditional best practice would be to >> and yeah >> have an
amendment that says we'd like to change the sublist. remove a name. You vote on that first and then once you've voted and agreed on removing the name, then we continue with the sublist as amended. It would require either you voting to not accept anybody on the list or taking one name off first voting on it and then taking care of the list from there. >> But can we even do that because we have will be mentioned in names. That's my only question. Well, so far we haven't mentioned the name, right? So, >> no, we haven't. >> So, we could just say the first person on the list or the second person or the fourth person. >> First person >> I would like removed from the list. >> And that doesn't necessarily mean that's maybe forever.
We maybe need to explore it some more, right? But uh >> well I mean I I can't just not say I mean I I don't know anything about what what what you mean you know I I don't know you know >> hard for me to make that kind of decision not knowing any >> background behind it >> you know I mean I'd have to know something more >> and that's fine that's how you choose the boat but I I want that removed So is that a motion to have number one removed from the additional office? >> That's something you can do in Poland. >> No, because you can only close session for negotiations or for formal evaluation of some sort. Yeah, >> we we could we've done it before. I mean, we we went into
close before, >> but if we go into close, we have to announce it 72 hours ahead of time that we're going to have a closed session. If you've done it before, it's not been legal. Um, so this Okay, so this is what's going on now. So, we have a mo Okay, we're not we're in the consent, but even before we get into the consent, we have a motion by Nicole to remove number one on the sublist. >> Yep, that's correct. So now we need now we need a second then. >> So this is would be seven or seven motion to we have a second on that. So, I think if we're doing that, we'll have to move it down to our action action item, right? So, we will still vote on the consent agenda as
is with her. >> We can Yeah. >> You know what I'm saying? That way we can and then it becomes an action item, right? >> We actually are making this an action item by taking action on it right now. So, doesn't have to be a separate item. We're taking action, moving it out of the consent and acting on it right at this time. So already is an action item just by acting on it separately. Okay. So this is the third time I'm asking for a second. Then I have a second. >> Good. I want it documented that I stood up. >> Yep. It will be in the middle. >> We're not done yet. >> Oh, yeah. Well, you guys can vote for your own, but I stood up. >> so the motion failed and >>
it remains on here then. >> Yep. We are back to regular consent agenda. So, now we just need a motion for the consent agenda as is. See, >> that's why I'm saying I don't understand that because then if it was an action item, then we could second and open up for further discussion so we can figure out what's going on because I don't >> we did that. There was no second. So there's no discussion. >> Yeah. Then you guys could have voted A or >> Well, I mean like me, I don't know. I don't have no idea what's going on on that. >> Can I blindly vote? >> Okay. My recommendation is that we vote on it and then if you have concerns, you talk to HR, maybe we go utilize that individual right away
on sublist if there are valid concerns and then down the road we could always remove that for anybody from the service. Well, that is a route we could take. But there was a similar situation like this and a schoolboard member had reached out to me prior to the meeting and gave me some background on some stuff. And that was another situation where there was a motion. No, there wasn't even a motion, you know, and then it it ended right there. >> Every scenario was different for him. >> Yeah. Yeah. So, I don't know. Like I I'm just saying like we don't you don't necessarily have to get into a vote because >> right >> because even seconding and going to that part still I don't know why >> right >> that's where I'm just not
you know >> for the sake of the others on the sublist we should though pass it along with the rest of the agenda and then if you have specific information not at the board meeting but at other times afterwards you can talk to fellow board members individually talk to HR, get them in the in the loop as to what the concerns are. You know, like I said, I'm blind as far as the reason. And I mean, I'd like to know more. I mean, if there's more, I'd like to know more. I mean, wouldn't you wouldn't you want to know? Why? >> Most definitely. >> Yeah. I mean, >> I I you know, I talk to other leaders in the community a lot. I'm well aware. >> And he I think he kind of gave it
up, you know, just by speaking for himself. So, my motion stand. I still stand on that. >> And I don't know if I'm willing to just say no for everyone because of that. >> No, there's nothing wrong. There's nothing wrong with, you know, wanting to pull. But I do agree with everything else, you know, but just number one, >> what we've done in the past is we pulled action and we voted on it separate. >> Yeah. >> We took care of these other ones that are flying, but we voted on the questionable one separate. That was illegal. >> We've done that so many times. >> Broken the law. You cannot close a meeting at the spur of the moment. What was that mean? What did you say? >> No, once we open up our meeting,
we can't make that kind of move. We can have a discussion prior to the meeting ahead of time and make a change if we want to. >> We're just at it now. We're we're just talking about the consent agenda now. We are discussing it. Well, yeah, we're discussing, but we can't make an change to make this one person an action item that goes against their equal opportunity rights. >> As far as I understand, >> and we can't close the meeting to do that on the spur of the moment. If we have if we want to have a closed session, it has to be about negotiations or an evaluation of the existing employee if they choose to have it closed. And then if we have that code meeting, it has to be announced with the regular
agenda 72 hours before the meeting. We can't just say, "Okay, we're going to exclude all taxpayers and all stakeholders and have our own little quiet meeting." >> It's 72 hours ahead where you got to make the change >> to go into a closed session, right? What about just changing the agenda? >> You can do that anytime you want. Open meeting >> the agenda, you know, like show five minutes and make a change before we open. That's okay to do. >> Um, yep, you can. >> That was okay to do. I just don't know if there's like a time limit. >> Yep. You can make that request as long as it's part of the public meeting afterwards. The actual process is public. So, what Nicole did was proper and we've gotten a second. It would have
been proper and you could have voted on it. Um, but chose not to do that. That's fine. >> No, we're blind. I mean, we don't know what we don't know why. >> See, I thought we s I'm just going by what Maggie told us previously on our meeting. If there's a like a name that we want to omit, we pull that name from the consent and make it an action item so that we can discuss >> that action item separately and then we make the decision from there. That's what that is. >> The way I've always understood it. >> That's the way the attorney told us, the school attorney. >> As long as it's a public meeting. >> Yes, I I did move it as an action. >> Yeah. And that's what I was saying.
So, we could have voted on the consent and then came back to this action item. >> It didn't need to be an action item. You could have done it right now, but you didn't. >> Yeah. >> You didn't have a second. So, there second it. >> If there's no second, there's no discussion. So, we move on. Let's move. >> But I wanted you publicly know I stood up. >> Yep. And the other way around it is after the meeting share your thoughts. Not as a group if that's a quorum. Share your thoughts. If somebody asks you go to HR and share your thoughts, then we still don't need to have that individual submit. They may be on the list. Doesn't mean you have to have that person submit. We can always revisit it. But one
of my jobs is to make sure we do everything properly and not get in trouble. >> Yes. Pink witch. >> So motion a motion to approve the consent agenda. >> Thank you. I'll second >> as presented. >> Yep. >> Okay. Okay. A motion by Tom, second by Chris to approve the consent agenda for October 15, 2025 as presented. further discussion. Uh >> I just want to say I don't agree with the sublist. I look out for the safety and wellbeing of the students of the Red Lake Nation and the Red Lake School District and I highly disagree with number one addition to the sublist. I want that publicly known. Okay. All those in favor say I. >> I. >> Well, I don't oppose the >> I oppose also. >> 52. >> Yes. >> Four. >>
Oh, yeah. Chris is here. Right there. Yeah. I mean, like I said, I'm blind. 52. >> Okay. Okay. Approve bills and wires for the month of September 2025 in the amount of 3.2 million and change. >> Thank you, Chair Barrett. And everything is in order. And I believe uh our esteemed treasurer has also been in chatting with willing any questions he had and hopefully he had them answered. >> Oh, we just need them open. >> I move to approve. I got my question high. >> Well, yeah, that's what I was >> kind of concerned about too. And then um >> well after we make a motion on public discussion on it. >> I'll second that motion. >> You're making a motion. Yes. >> And then Nicole. >> Yes. >> Next months might be a little
high too because we have six attendees of NIA. So >> did you make it out there? >> Report. >> I learned a lot. >> I'm I'm do my miscellaneous portion, but uh further discussion on >> Hey, further discussion on the action item. So on the action item or on this bill approval, I would like for Willie to be included in our next board meeting just to kind of go over some of the stuff that I just been catching from the news. Um especially with the impact a being affected. Um I think we as a whole group need to be made aware of this stuff because I think it's going to be to the detriment of our our district big time. Um, this is just a bad place to be in right now. Um, I mean
that that's just my u request to the superintendent to see if really can attend the next board meeting to kind of go over this impact funding and because of like where is >> Yeah. What we can do is contact our representatives. >> Yeah, N has put something out. Nissa has put something out. Uh, so I've been following that pretty closely, too. Um, I need to get in contact with Mr. G. But yeah, I think our state legislature is me and um at NIA. He and Tim actually were at a com or a session where our state was on front street. So I think um yeah we can discuss that other >> thank you. >> Yeah. >> Okay. All those in favor say I. I miss. Anybody got anything? Mus. >> Yeah. So me and uh
me Jackson and a few other members went to NIA which was actually really outstanding. Um there were some really good uh sessions, breakout sessions. Um but I was just listening to like a lot of educators that were there. Um, it kind of had me in two different frames of thought because of what the educators talking about their students from their districts and how they're using chat GBT to do their papers and the teachers are like they don't even know what that word means and they got it written on a paper. So, I'm like, dang, you know what the hell's going on? So, they're using AI outside like big time. Um, which is I don't know. It's kind of concerning, but then again, it's kind of good that the kids are already getting used to using
this stuff. But in the same token, I don't know exactly where our kids lie in that atmosphere. >> Remember, AI was playing a big role with our um special education lesson planners. >> Yeah. >> So, our you know, our teachers are using it to help with lesson plans. I've used it to help. I like to do it's called the 8020 rule. >> I have it start something for me and then I change it. But I I'll look at it and I'll go, "Oh, that's way better than I would have written it, but then I personalize it for what we need to do." Another area of concern and we and our teachers and administrators are already working on this to make sure we don't let kids get away with this, but is also staffing. Um, a
lot of times people apply for a job and they're actually, if it's a remote interview, they're popping the question into AI as it's being asked and then reading the answer the way AI says it should be. We haven't really seen much of that yet, but I think that if there's ever any doubt, you want to make sure you have an in-person interview. >> This person isn't in front of a computer. >> No. for u on to the topic of students using chbt and AI universities have software to detect these kind of things if if the whole paper is just like a thing from >> GBT because you could write a paper you know with all your own like you know thoughts and sources and you could utilize chat GBT to clean it up you know
that's that's okay >> and that's what and that's what I was getting at is are we are we getting to that level where our kids here in Red Lake need to be aware of this stuff. >> I I think so. >> Just start educating them on it and how to properly use it. >> Um >> I was just actually listening to >> what is that? U rock the bills radio this morning and TI or Timberland just put out a pretty much a whole AI song >> but it's 80% him 20% AI. So people are kind of getting confused about it. But that's where, you know, this stuff is, you know, it's it's pretty main it's already mainstream, but I think it's getting to the level where our kids may be able to benefit from using
it, but how to properly use it, I think that's a topic, discussion, like I guess that's for you educators. Uh I was just being noble listening in at NIA, but there was some really good topics that uh came up and what everybody's really focused on is this impact aid and the way things are going with that. Um my personal thoughts is I think districts are northern states will be pretty good, but the southern states I honestly believe they'll start graduating them 10th grade. And I'm just going to be honest because they're going to lose a lot of money because of the impact they the funding is just not going to be there. And I think all of this comes into effect and that's why I want to be here. But I would also like to
influence every request everybody at least think about attending Nissa. This is where we're going to get the updates from what's been going on in DC. Uh and then May is next year. So, I think we need to Yeah, I think we really need to make ourselves available for that if we can. And I understand everybody has family and we all have jobs and we have to look out for, you know, our district, our kids, and ourselves, but I think we need to start stomping the ground with the rest of the >> federal tribes. That's all I have. Thanks. >> Thank you, Ronald. >> Anything else, M? >> Um, the sound system. And then we get it fixed over to summer and and see fine yesterday. >> All right. >> I don't want to go through
another >> another basketball season without >> the volleyball game. >> What were they using? >> No. No. Just that they were that they were using the PA there. >> Yeah. might >> a simple fit up where the soundboard can be up front would fix it because you know the sound is the way that speakers are kind of a naturally it is going to have where it tear but it what it is is like you got to have the music at a certain level so the speakers don't blow out and then when that's at that level the microphone's really low so you turn the mic up and then but the thing is you got to keep running back there and forth and >> sweet there was a soundboard which if you seen cast lake They got
that right up from there on iPad. They can control everybody. >> Yeah. >> So, remember when we did the floor, I asked if we could get it set up up there at the table. Remember, we just redid the floor that was in the middle. Did we do that? >> Yeah. The floor and we got a new um table, but we didn't get new sand. >> But we didn't get that hook up. Remember that. So worst case scenario, you could hire somebody like Bessler or NLFX and now that the floor is in, you could run a cord, you know, out from that main hookup behind the bleachers and straight to the table and, you know, you could have the little boxing to cover the cord if you want. Doesn't look as professional, but it is an
option at this point. >> You could still run the court under the floor, but it's not under there. It's not the biggest deal of all our things we should be talking about, but for the sake of when there is events there and we want to like, you know, be like I don't want to play the national anthem from my phone into the microphone and it sounds crappy or, you know, the music blowing out when the kids are, you know, >> you know, you get excited on the mic. >> Yeah. Yeah. You know, it's like it's part of the experience. It's for the kids and it's a real simple fix and >> yeah, >> couple phone calls away from getting an LFX our best way to set it up. >> All we need is the same
soundboard. Just got to get the hook up closer. So, >> yep. LFX can do that easily. A little wire they got to connect to. >> Yep. >> Thinking about all of this. I I do want to mention this. So, when we were there, they had somebody from my god the treasury department. They were giving out shredded up money. But then they also had a education deal for grades K through 12 for financial literacy. >> And I'm thinking that's something that we may want to try to look into. >> It was actually really it was pretty smooth. But I tried to steal their book. I didn't know you had to take a picture of the little code thing QR code. But it's actual K through 12 for financial literacy. And I've just never seen that before
anywhere. So they starting on them in kindergarten. But that's all I got. I'm sorry guys. >> Well, that's interesting. Very something that we should be looking at. >> Some other stuff too that you guys >> you didn't you go to >> Yeah, I went um there's a lady name. She's really into this plant-based education. Mhm. >> I think we need to be looking into something like that, you know, like right now you're going to have your hunting camp coming up and all that. Is it riding around shining? You know, maybe they should be doing some uh gun safety on target practice and all this instead of what what's going on. I I'm a big I'm against this shining and everything. I always have been. I don't believe in that. But that was part of uh
I thought maybe that they should be teaching them some gun safety or something instead of just taking them out and riding around shooting the deer from inside their truck and all this and calling it hunting. That ain't hunting. >> Nope. That's more shooting. >> That's just shooting. That's all that is. >> Shooting and cheating. I call it easy way. But I think we need to look into more landbased education stuff like I know we do some of it with our maple syrup. I don't know if we did with the wild rice, you know, >> wild ricing, birch barking, um some of the other going out looking for sage and sweet grass. >> How many of kids are actually getting in a canoe and pulling it around, knocking up knocking the rice down and getting acquainted
with the environment that's out out there? How many of them know what a manic in is? How many know what that is? >> Do we not have many rice beds though around our community? They're all like H Lake and wider >> pretty much does make it does make it challenging way >> but uh we can do that. >> You have one in Northwest Angle, right? That's kind of a trip though for our students. know you got one and you do have a rice bed in the almond creek up on the upper red lake and you do got a couple in in a secret spot that I ain't going to tell you about >> first second third fourth lake >> lot of help you are >> well good rises don't don't uh give everybody the information
they want you to go out and do it on your own and do your I'm scouting and all this. You don't >> Uhhuh. >> drag anybody along with you and >> Yeah. And they don't know what they're doing. They come in there and grow and everything, you know, and you like usual, you know, stuff like that. >> Yep. >> We'll work on that. >> Yeah. And it was another one there too that did what Jack is talking about, but they had like automotive cuz what what I also noticed in there too is there's a lot more of those handson jobs that people are now looking, you know, they need, but they don't have the people with the education to get it. Nobody's trying to get them. So it was like a forklift that was ricing
uh not ricing but farming just teaching them how to farm. But was a lot of interesting vendors there but I grabbed a lot of stuff and I just forgot my bag to bring it in for you guys. But yeah Nia was it was actually pretty solid. >> It was good. >> Best one. I'll I'll add on to that too where uh recently Cash Lake has done a lot with their with their kids where they're taking them out, setting nets, cleaning fish, hanging nets, doing uh hides, you know, they're really uh they're really advanced in what they they got some good instructors over there that do do an excellent job. That is not the only place though. I'm just not singling out Cast Lake. There's a lot of every place for Pondac and L LDF, LCO.
They're all doing this kind of stuff just uh adding to a person's all around ability and their education and their knowledge. >> We did that a couple years ago when we had the bison hunt. Had a chance to learn about a lot of that. We've been nice to do that every year. >> Remember they did the deer cleaning? >> Yep. too. >> They brought it in and they did the cleaning here in the building. >> Yep. >> Those are some helpful. >> Yeah. But >> going next month then I'm going up to Misa. >> Oh, I got approved to go. >> That's in December, ain't it? >> In December. >> All right. Is that one that we're talking about that we need to be going that meeting or somebody mentioned it was in spring? It's
the one in December. >> The one in December because it's going to be the follow up for what happened this past March. They're going to let us know. But the way it sounds not good from what I just been reading, but think we got to start attending these meetings because it I think it affects us more than a lot of other fally recognized tri. >> Yep. Exactly. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> I have to go run to the peer leadership class. >> All right. And I need Rebecca to come see my laptop. Rebecca, >> we have celebration today because we have gone now seven weeks without major bathroom damage. >> That's great. >> Treats in the cafeteria. Told all the kids, thank you for respecting our bathrooms. >> That is National School Week. See? >>
Oh, >> yeah. But I reached out to Andy last time a shout out. >> Great. Yeah. >> Encourage me to do Rebecca. So, >> thank you. >> Can you come see me? >> I'll run down and make sure she's here. >> I'll move, sir. I'll second. >> Motion by Chris. >> Rob second. Robin Robbie >> Tom wanted to say all in favor say I
