Fairfax County school board considers longer summers, more 5-day weeks

001Just about two hours the Fairfax County School Board is meeting to talk about possible changes to the school calendar. Board members say the current calendar has too many holidays and early release days. Data show just over half of the school weeks this year have been full five-day weeks. The board said it wants to keep things more consistent to help families stick to a routine especially when it comes to child care. We're left scrambling and struggling to find care on these random days given that many employers including the federal government are requiring their workforce to be in the office every day. All right, so another possible change extending summer break. Right now the school district has one of the shortest summers in our area. The board says it will make decisions tonight about the calendar for the next two school years.
