001night in Alexandria, the debate over officers in schools will be front and center. The school board is revisiting its existing police agreement and families have an opportunity to weigh in. Our Jacqueline Quinn live in Alexandria with the opposing arguments taking shape. Good morning. Yes, so the school board meeting is taking place at 5:00 p.m. again at the school board. Now, this is something that they've had in place, but they periodically have to review it. Though, some of the changes here is what have parents fired up. Now, we were taking a look at some of the latest safety data that just came out in February of this year and it shows that 167 incidents were reported across the district in the first half of the school year. The majority were classified fights, assaults, and injuries, but

002just last month police recovered a loaded gun from an 8-year-old student's backpack at Samuel Tucker Elementary. Now, the current policy called the memorandum of understanding states that school resource officers are not school disciplinarians. Their role is limited to criminal investigations, safety threats, and required statutory reporting. Day-to-day discipline is the responsibility of school administrators, but one group, Tenants and Workers United, specifically take issue with changes in what's known as the triad model, which they say would expand the role of officers to allow them to serve in the role of mentors and educators inside schools. We already have um trained professionals that um give out these services and are trained to be able to support the students and we don't think that um that should be a role that be that should be given to uh a

003police officer within school grounds. And the group also points to broader disparities when it comes to black and brown students when policing is brought into schools. Now, this agreement is expected to be adopted uh next week, April 23rd, but again, that meeting tonight at the school board. Back to you, guys.
