001this morning just a few hours ago the Spotsylvania County School Board adopted a new controversial policy regarding transgender students it's based off guidelines Virginia governor Glenn Younkin issued last month Randy Ayala joins us now in the studio to break down what this exactly means Randy for both parents and students good morning yeah good morning to you Annie so this policy puts a lot of power in the hands of parents here at past four to two with one council member choosing not to vote late last night so here's what this means for students who identify as transgender the soup policy is following the quote privacy dignity and respect for all students guidelines the Virginia Department of Education put out back in July Governor youngin calling these uh quote model policy so let's get into this here

002under these rules students will be referred to by the names on their record and the pronouns Associated to their biological sex unless a parent gives written permission saying otherwise all right two kids will only play in sports based on their biological sex not by gender identity D the same goes for bathrooms unless parents choose to opt their kids out and prefer them to be given access to a single use stall for safety concerns here students also not allowed to wear gender neutral clothing the council member who chose not to vote said she had some concerns about abusive parents and what would happen if the school system outed a student and the child was harmed because of that lgbtq plus Advocates have sharply criticized these policies here calling them dangerous politically motivated and singling out transgender

003youth other school districts in the state have publicly said they're against these policies like Alexandria City as well as Arlington Loudoun County's new superintendent last week said they are still under review of the public comment session for this meeting lasted almost two hours getting pretty heated at some points as you can probably imagine so coming up at 6 30 you'll hear from parents on both sides of this Allison all right Randy thanks lots of layers to that report appreciated
