0015 30 now an update on school libraries in spotsylvania county virginia the county school board is meeting right now about their plan to remove books deemed explicit the school board's attorney let board members know what they voted to do is unconstitutional our colby satterfield joins us from outside of that meeting tonight the school board could be forced to reverse its decision on banning books i talked before the meeting with school board member baron braswell and he tells me that that is the plan after last week's school board order to remove sexually explicit books from school libraries after a parent complained to finding shocking titles on sexuality faith and race during that discussion two board members even advocated burning the offensive books days later the school board's attorney came forward to say that move to remove
002books was unconstitutional since then there has also been a strong call from some students parents and community members to leave books on the shelves an online petition garnered nearly 5 000 signatures and students protesting ahead of the meeting it's such a disservice to our students to remove books in which they can see themselves in because i know the school board doesn't want to believe it but sex exists people of other identities other than themselves exist and when we remove the ability the ability for people to see themselves in books and in media then we remove the ability for people to accept themselves it's so so important that children have an outlet to see themselves in and it's so it's just so disappointing that the school board has made attempts to take that away the school
