001Republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Just a reminder of the board that our mics are this is that system where the mics are hot all the time. So >> at least watch mom. >> Yeah, man. >> Really though. >> They work really, really well. They're very sensitive. I was on the other end listening in the last meeting and they're very loud. I'd like to welcome you all this evening to our first meeting in January of the Laurel Public School Board. Public participation is encouraged in the Laurel School District. All meetings of the board will be open to the public except as provided by law. Scheduled meetings of the board may be recorded. Audience members may address the board during public comment for non-aggenda interests
002or during the discussion of the relevant printed agenda item. Your attendance is welcomed. If you plan to speak to the board, please look over the information on the agenda, then complete the public comment section of our signin cards there at the back and hand that to either Superintendent Tors or myself. Public participation is a right that carries certain responsibilities such as informing oneself in advance of the issues being discussed. Voluntarily being as brief and germanine as possible, not unduly repeating remarks others or you have already made and showing respect at all times for the rights and opinions of others, whether citizens, board members, school district employees, or students. Do I have any public comment for non-aggenda items? Hearing none, we'll move on then to our next section, which is correspondence. And again, as always, the
003board and the district are ever appreciative of all of the donations that are made to the school district and its various activities. Um, especially would like to acknowledge all of the donations in memoriam for the baseball program this month. Thank you very much. Moving on then to our consent agenda. Do I have a motion? Do we have discussion? I I make a motion to approve the consent agenda removing letter C the 2526 books for board approval LH LHS they were on the agenda asformational previous to this >> correct >> and I do think that moving forward though all of our votes need to be separate action items or is that am I on the wrong thing I'm on the wrong thing I'm ahead of myself But I I was going to table that. So you
004are appropriate. >> Mhm. >> So no no exception. >> I don't have Let me amend my motion. Make motion to approve the consent agenda. Uh as presented. >> As presented by Renee. Do I have a second? >> I will. >> Seconded by Jenny. Any other board discussion? I do have comment. >> So on the substitute list, it doesn't show that there's any removals from the list, but down in resignations, one of the aids, I believe it is, has resigned. So just I know it's a timing thing, but just wanted to make sure that that person got removed from the sub list. >> They will. >> Great. The only other question I had is in reading through the minutes, some of the stuff is like bolded in the minutes. Is there a reason why we bold
005things? >> Um, just because I have I have help with AI and it bolds things. I just need to take that out. >> Oh, okay. I just didn't know if those were things like you needed to follow up on. I was like, is this new cuz I don't remember >> that way, you know. >> Okay, >> great. Any other discussion items? Audience discussion hearing? None. We'll move to vote on the motion by Renee to approve the consent agenda as presented. Seconded by Jenny. All in favor say I. >> I. >> Any oppose? Motion carries. Did this include any of this? >> Yes, it did. >> Yep. Okay. I thought so. I I saw these as a hint to not move forward. >> All right. I appreciate you. We just have some introductions of new staff.
006So, if they're here, I'd have them uh stand, please. Uh is Kayla Keane here? Okay. All right. Kayla, please join us in wel welcoming Kayla Keane to Laurel Public Schools. She is a new bus aid. Kayla brings experience working with students across a wide range of ages and is known for her calm, supportive, and safety focused approach. We're happy to have her joining our transportation team and supporting students each day. And Kaen Torbert. All right. Met the other day, didn't we? >> Yeah. >> Please join us in welcoming Kaen Torbert to Laurel Public Schools as a long-term substitute teaching first grade. Kaylee brings 22 years of elementary teaching experience and deep commitment to creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging learning environment. We're excited to have her supporting our students during this time. Now, did I miss anybody else? It seemed like I got six standing. I got six I wrote. All right. Thank you guys. I really do appreciate you guys being
009here. Thanks for stepping in, helping kids at Laurel Public Schools. Thank you. >> All right, I got some of these little bags. This is Pollock and I have six people that only need five bags. >> So special. >> One of you is not going to get one. Put together. >> Thank you. >> Then we'll uh get that to this young man. We haven't forgotten. I promise. Promise. Okay. Thank you guys very much. >> Thank you all. Now, if you'd like to stay and watch the entire board meeting, you can. >> They left so fast. >> Yeah, they run. >> Can if you really want. >> They did what all of us want to do. >> That was fast. I didn't even get up here. >> Yeah, they did. >> They really emptied out the place.
010>> Yeah. >> All right. move the board. >> Yeah. >> So, board, I'm going to make just a small adjustment to the agenda, which is just to move action item E to action item A, and that's just in the interest in respect of Shane for Shane's time if we have questions. >> Well, I mean, we can vote on it. He can pay BY THE HOUR. >> YEAH, JAKE CAN PAY BY the hour. So, he needs TO COME UP A FEW more times. I hope we get a couple bunch more years. >> Yeah, I do too. So, we'll go ahead and move, if that's all right with the board, with the exception of Rene uh to number we'll move to number E just uh which is our additional bond expenditures wish list. >> Great. So, our
011capital planning group has talked about this at a few different meetings and they've tried to uh create a list in about as best order as we can. Uh though a few things u in my recommendation I I say we approve um maybe a little bit out of order. Uh and I and I have Shane here because if we're talking about oh for example the graph javelin runway that's something we know has to be done uh it'll be done with this extra money and we'll work on that. We're talking about AC units for the intermediate and the elementary school. Uh the the group wanted to look at the middle school uh intermediate uh school boat extension, the one that goes in that middle school to we feel like that would potentially be a great uh bus
012drop off for both LIS and the middle school at the same time and one drop off and that would give front of the middle school and the front of the intermediate to the parents for drop offs. So doubling their drop off areas. I think that might be good. Uh yeah, the kids got to walk across the street, but we have the good crosswalk there and we'll have a crossing guard and all that. Playground improvements are at Laurel Elementary School. We cannot go any other school than Laurel Elementary because intermediates already been done. And the um ele school qualifies for the bond money. So that would be at Laurel Elementary School playground improvements. Um some Laurel elementary school bathroom upgrades where we didn't really have the money. We weren't sure at the time, but we did
013some basics in those bathrooms, but we were pretty sparse on what we did in there. Um, I I don't personally recommend we do the Laurel Elementary second floor window shades. I think if we have the uh air conditioning in there, we'll take care of a lot of our problems there. Same with the blinds. Um, uh, I don't remember what eight and nine were. Do you guys remember, Jenny? >> Oh, yeah. Marquee sign. >> Oh, the marquee sign. Yeah, that was an ales. >> I don't remember what that was. Julie, when you typed that up, do you remember what that >> old wings? >> I'm looking at it and I'm trying. >> Is it just things that need to be done in the old wings that we just kind of >> Yeah, I think so. >>
014Extra bulletin boards and like >> that. Well, maybe that's what it was. It was some extra bulletin boards. It's not something we need to do, but it's something we we could look at. That's what it was. uh not a marquee sign. We just don't feel it's necessary at this time for the elementary. I feel like we can spend that money somewhere else. Um I don't and again I'll ask Shane to talk to you guys about this. We also talked about a salty dog and a side by side for spreading salt in sand. Salty dog is a spreader. Uh >> so so there so that >> that would be the next question. Yeah. So, those would be uh uh for facilities to spread uh on all the sidewalks, new sidewalks we have, they'd be spreading, you
015know, your your sand and your ice and salt and all that type of stuff. Uh is that pretty accurate to the basics of it? >> Yes. >> All right. So, I guess I got Shane here. He wanted to come in and talk a little bit. He he insisted on being here tonight and uh no, he came at my request and he said he would drop by. We're going to talk a little bit about that. Maybe some time frames. Uh if there's anything on there that you just feel like from the committee doesn't qualify for the bond, now's a good time before we approve it. Uh there's anything else you want to add. We're listening. >> Okay. I I would concentrate obviously on your priorities. Pick your priority first. We held the reason we pulled AC
016out and being if you remember, we were worried about our budget. I do want to point out looks like we have a ton of money but at the time almost every bit of that is actually interest right so we had dollar values and nobody bets I won't bet on what we think we're going to get we don't have no clue what the interest rate or what the market's going to do so that number actually is right at about what the amount of interest we made so we hit all of our projects I don't say perfectly but perfectly on budget it got them all done. We're able to check all the boxes from the bond. Um, and now with the interest, you have obviously some choices that you guys get to make. Um, the AC units,
017we we had guesstimated that was roughly 2.5 million. That still doesn't mean we haven't taken it to full design and bid yet, right? We have the buildings prepped for it. We made sure that the equipment was capable of receiving cooling. We had the the coils, the cooling coils put in the equipment. Um, we had the structural already upgraded in all the new buildings to allow for the additional weight of the equipment. Um, but we just didn't, you know, make that step to bring the AC in. So, we still have to design it, take it out for bids. So, the 2.5 is a guesstimate, right? We're just guessing. So, I would pick two or three of these as your main priorities. Let us take it to design. let us take it out for uh pricing and
018then we'll be able to bring it back and say yep we're right within this budget or no we're going to be 3 million so we're going to have to take some of the other ones off the list. Um that would be the priorities I would recommend you probably look at if if AC is at the top of the list. I guess that's the way I would look at it. So these aren't hard again these are estimates. So we still have to we don't have any design for it. So, I can't even really put a a hard ledger to, you know, every piece of a a piece of pipe and all that to actually give a super accurate until we get it designed. We're feeling pretty comfortable that that should get it, but we still need
019to take it to full design. So, we need approval to take it to design and which we will spend some money doing that. Um, then we'll come back and say, "Okay, yeah, we're within budget or you guys have to augment, you know, it's going to be 3.2 2 million of maybe it's 2.2 too. I doubt it, but >> anything we approve tonight doesn't have to be done, >> right? >> Just simply saying the board's approved that to move forward. >> Yeah, we need that approval. So, because we are going to spend money to do the design, we have to pay obviously the design team. Um, and we'll go through the pricing exercises and >> I think I think the AC would be the one that would be the kind of the driver of all the
020other projects. So, if you comes out to be 2.4 4 million and that's great. Now we have a little bit of leeway. Uh you though I know you're always very conservative on these things but he's been dead on on a lot of different things. So I feel very comfortable with his estimates when we give that gives that he feels very comfortable with those. Um and again I can come back to this board in two months you know and say all right looks like the EC is good. Uh we got someone coming in for the javelin. Uh let's go ahead now and maybe we can approve the road extension and the playground improvements if we feel like we can have the money. We don't have to do it all tonight. Just need to do it on
021uh you know on something where we can move forward on. I think the AC drives it where we get those numbers solid and then we can because I don't want to send do a vote for a road extension tonight per se and then have that. You can, but we can just say hold off. Don't take anything civil until civil engineer until we get done with the AC. So, you can approve things, but we may not take them and move forward on until we know that AC comes. >> Said the only issue there, and I don't want to get us into a sunk cost piece, but if we wait too long on the civil, the problem is we'll never make this summer the the the right schedule. So, that one makes me a little nervous of
022not to at least get it designed and see where we land in line with the AC. Um, or we're going to miss our window, if you know what I mean. >> Well, we're going to trust your judgment on what you think we can move forward on. >> I I would suggest those two if if the road is a priority. I mean, I don't know if the road's a priority for you guys over to your playground or things like that. Um the civil piece though if we don't hit early get the design let's get it at least priced out ready to go if our AC comes in good and then we can move right to that turn that loose that way we can actually get it done during the summer window um our summer season windowing
023with kids out of school not having all the heavy equipment there um the javelin I would suggest I mean that's close enough let's just get it And we know what that cost is cuz we actually had that bid out in the bid documents. So, we just did it as an alternate, but we were nervous on pricing obviously. So, we did not award that piece of it. Um, you know, we did we did the $25,000 worth of building the base of the runway. We just haven't done the the Mondo and the surfacing. So, so that one I could say I I would suggest we just do it. And that actually might be able to fall right into the contingency that we still have at graph because we have been very careful with the contingency usage we're
024doing. Again, knocking would we've done very well. We haven't had to spend uh much in the line of contingency there. So, I would say let's get that one wiped off and just do it. Um so, do you feel like we could approve the first four? >> Yes. uh approved the first four and then the playground wouldn't be as big a deal, I guess, but the road extension and the air air conditioning is what you would recommend we have. >> Yeah, cuz we got to get designed and then then we can get it priced out. If it falls within our budget, then we've still got enough time to be able to get equipment ordered, get we'll get bids out. Of course, we have to bid it, publicly bid it, and then then we'll have enough time
025to get equipment ordered. Then give us a little bit on the playground improvements. Those were elementary school. What do you feel like um what would be that process? Would that >> we would need we need help from A&E to build a design cuz you have all the ADA standards now that continually shift year to year that you guys have to stay up with. So anything new that we bring in has to be those standards. We'll have to do a design. Um and I would recommend with that one, it's not an overshoot. We tell them that's the number. and say you design your playground to that number versus design a playground and then we'll see where it lands. It's we say here's $100,000 or uh >> 400 400,000. >> Did I come up with that number?
026>> That was That's right. >> But that's that basketball. >> That was cuz we wanted to do the basketball courts and redo all the asphalt. Yeah, that's right. Um, >> don't ask. >> Well, I was thinking playground equipment and I'm like that's a big and I remember we talked about all the asphalt. We wanted to redo the basketball court. So that's why that number is so high, right? Yeah. So that's something we should those those top four >> y >> top four and let's get them designed and then but we'll put a number on the playground and say okay playground equipment >> you can have a $50,000 playground that has one little piece of equipment to you could spend half a million dollars in very short order. We'll just have to pick a budget, figure
027out what our asphalt is, figure out what the basketball courts are, and that'll be the remainder of what we have for the right >> for the playground is what I would recommend, I guess. >> Okay. So, that's a pretty hard thing. >> That was kind of what I was wondering, too, just because of number three. I was over at the middle school the other day and just kind of looking at that spot. It's not as easy as it would seem to cut a road into there. There's a drain smack dab right in the middle of where that road would drive. And I started thinking, how is that going to work? Because it's like a low it's like engineered to be the low spot for that drain. >> It is. >> And so it's going to
028be it's started making me wonder if that actually is the one that is the most out of scope up there just because of some of the extras. >> I you know it's it's still tying directly to say security and moving kids >> budget wise. 50 going to get it there. >> No, I actually added to that budget. The the estimate from the civil uh civil engineer was about 280. >> Um what I added to what I was worried about was actually getting the kids from and he didn't look at it the way I did getting the kids off onto a off the buses onto a large walkway that could go either to the middle school. >> Yeah. or be able to get over to the cross crosswalk that we put in to get over to
029the elementary in case you know somebody's dropping kids off or if they have to split on a bus. I wasn't exactly sure how you busted. So, I added to it because of the the walkways I wanted to add. And then I also I was figuring I was pretty worried about that being such a swampy area if we have to do any um mitigation to the soil >> which we had to do quite a bit of that on our parking lots. >> So, I was trying to take that into context too. >> Yeah. Okay. That makes you feel better because I was I was staring at it >> probably 10 minutes the other day and >> got a little nervous. >> Yeah, we want to make that a oneway too. Remember we it needs to be
030a oneway and only >> um or you're going to create a ton of chaos with the exiting. Um it needs to be for buses only. So it shouldn't be looked at as >> we even talked about some sort of >> we need to have control some sort of gate that would be closed during the day. It is not it is school property. It would not be a street. >> Y >> and uh we it's not somewhere you just go up and down to cut cut off a block. >> It's going to be tough now getting those buses out to turn right or left because of the two entrances we have to in elementary school. Right. That's right in the middle of those two entrances. You have all that traffic and we're going to be dumping
031something out in the middle of that tea is going to be tough. So, it needs to be buses only. So, >> yeah. >> Yes, Jenny. >> If we just approve one through four, number five, the bathrooms, how much time do you need to get the equipment if we're going to put those upgrades on the summer schedule? >> Good question. >> A few months. So, if we come back in March after we have a better idea, >> that's not quite as bad cuz most of that stuff you can, you know, like the piping, the plumbing you can buy at the >> at any of the supply houses. >> Sure. >> Toilets you can buy at the supply houses. There's not a long long lead pieces of equipment in that one. So, I feel like we probably
032have a little more time with that one. >> Okay. Um, >> so if we came back at the first March meeting or even the last February meeting, >> yeah, I'm not going to have enough time to design. Um, cuz I'll have to turn in. >> What I mean for those things like bathrooms, if the first if the first four get approved tonight, if they get approved tonight, >> we can say tomorrow, all right, let's start moving forward on things. >> Yeah. And our only cost at that point would be the design costs, which are going, you know, pretty pretty small. get through the design and then say, "Yeah, or or we feel comfortable with these budgets." And then come back and you guys can turn loose what else you want. >> How far are we
033from designing bed on the AC? That seems to be the longest. >> Couple months. It' be probably two months >> cuz we are like under the gun to decide the rest of this stuff. >> Yep. >> Just so everyone remembers, we have till May to get the rest of this money out the >> ear. Not the door, but >> earmarked. And it's 85% encumbered, which I'll I'll work >> through that. We have a little bit of leeway >> as long as we're 85% encumbered, which we are to be honest. We already are locked in on our 80% 85% encumbered. >> Yeah. >> So, you have a little bit of leeway, but Dan Simmons is going to give us he usually likes to see it completely spent within a year. So, >> but I'll I'll obviously
034backwash that very closely. >> Yeah. So, we do have we have some time, but not a lot. >> Not not a lot. >> Y, >> that's Jenna. >> Okay. When we were developing this list, items six and seven we put on. I know we're going to have the AC, but the idea behind the window shades and the blinds was to reduce operating costs for future years to reduce the cost of the AC. In your opinion, do you think that's necessary? Do you think it's We don't want to leave money on the table, but if we don't want to just blow it either if it's >> This is mostly at the elementary large >> Mgan and West on the south facing the south facing on those big windows. >> Um usually getting I don't know. I've
035seen it go a couple different ways. Once you get air conditioning in the space, it does help. But your equipment will run more. >> Sure. >> Because you are bringing in that solar heat gain. >> Um couple different ways. one blinds or you actually do the the coating >> coding >> you can code them um I'd say it's half a dozen one six of the other to be honest once you get into the blinds and are maintaining blinds and you have to be op operating blinds eventually they wear out and then pretty soon the district's tired of messing with them so then they just leave them either down or up and then it makes it look not very nice so I don't know >> I yeah I'm >> there's a coding solution >> that would
036for us. >> I would probably coating or >> push that way. Yes, they have film that they put over it that can even lower the UV. >> It does change the aesthetics a little bit. So, we're going to want A&E to kind of weigh in too, I guess. >> Is it necessary even, do you think? Does it reduce operating costs that much? >> He's going to say no. You can tell he wants to say no. Um, I don't know that I believe as much of that. >> Okay, >> that helps. But I'm not going to say I'm against it. So, I'll just put it that way. Try to walk the walk the line the edge here. >> Do I think it's worth it? >> Even if you weren't putting in AC. Yeah, absolutely. If you
037put in AC, I don't know. >> You're not going to put You're not going to run your AC during the Well, you shouldn't be running your AC during the summer anyway. Kids aren't there. >> Who cares if your building's 85 in the summer when there's nobody there? You turn it off. Then the rest of the year if you're already operating at lower outside air temps makes it a little I don't know your payback's there to be honest. So >> are there glare concerns principles? Are there glare concerns that would why would we want blinds? >> Bathroom. >> Sorry. >> Is there glare? Do you guys have any concerns with glare or anything? Simply a heat. Okay. And you know, if you do put any type of of a window covering on there, then you lose
038your solar gain heat in this winter. In the winter, >> so it's six of one half a dozen of the other. You lose your solar gain heat in the winter, then your heater's got to run more. So >> yeah, I I feel like we don't put it up there because, you know, from the time the teachers leave to the time teachers return, you know, air conditioning will run minimally or not at all. So >> yeah, you know, it's those shoulder periods that we're struggling with. It's those four weeks on each end. That's truly where we were struggling. It's the four weeks in the in August, September, and then May is obviously the times that we strugg outside air attempts. this one on a little longer I guess this year, but for the most part um
039you know that's where schools always struggle is just those little shoulder seasons cuz you should just be turning it off cuz you're not occupied in the summer, right? So >> cuz blinds are window coverings a safety thing like to be able to put down blinds. >> I think this is second level only, wasn't it? Yeah. I don't see where it's a safety issue. >> Oh, it's second level only though. >> I just like where it comes from the side. >> Oh, yeah. I was just thinking >> Yeah, I'm not too worried about that. Like like you need them to >> Yeah. >> break the you know visual. I think that's a big deal. >> I think we should go down like the start with number one. Does anybody have any input on that and then
040go to number two? any input on that >> and then from there then I think it'd be easier to make our motion as far as does anybody have any concerns about any one of these things in particular things we need to discuss? >> Yeah, >> then it makes it easier to decide, I guess. >> Yeah, let's do that. Let's just start with one. Any concerns or questions over the Javelin run? I just I just think that's a no-brainer cuz we're fixing everything else over there. Like, let's just get it right and then we're not doing it later and having to drive on stuff that we have already. >> Mhm. >> So, I that to me is just >> I will throw one caveat to that too is when we bid that um big cost driver
041was actually the surfacing on that because it was it's a specialty. We had to bring somebody in from out of state and we were hoping we're hoping something else was going to happen potentially that somebody would be here in that time frame. Well, we're bidding this week. So, potentially that number could go down too because we're going to have a a big surfacing contractor, you know, bidding a large project here. So, we might be able to piggy back off of that. So, >> that's good. But yeah, I would suggest we do that because you could even by the time we get through with graphics because we're getting along the road pretty well and our contingency is holding, we still we probably would we'll have enough in contingency >> that may not even come out of
042the may come out without contingency potentially. >> So I would just approve that one. We could play it either way off the bond >> all the same pile of just >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Anything on the AC units? We feel like we cover that pretty well. Mhm. >> the road extension. Any thoughts on that? >> I just feel like that is a I mean, we know that the drop off pickup situation over there is something that keeps coming up in the community and I feel like that that along with the AC units are things that I feel like the community wants and would solve some problems that we know we have. Um, I think it is something that they're they're like obvious guesses as far as community support goes, I guess. >> Yeah. And highly
043visible. >> Yes. >> Especially Yeah. >> Yeah. I'd say that's the same as the playground. If we were going to now that construction is completed, getting back to opening those during the summer. Um, it'd be lovely to have a new playground on that side, too. That'd be another very visible community asset. So, I think number four is the same way. >> And the bathroom upgrades. Any questions on that? >> So, is that mostly just fixing like upgrading fixtures or are we like remodeling >> some ADA? Yeah. Putting in some ADA stalls, upgrading the restrooms. Um, >> we're not cutting a tile job or anything. >> No, that's like not that much money. I mean, really for bathrooms. >> Not cutting. It'll be more bor, you know, the toilets that are that need to be replaced,
044we'll replace them. Sinks that need to be replaced, we replace them. >> Yeah. And the labs, we did replace a lot of the the water closets. Um, but we did we did not replace a lot of the the laboratory stuff. So, the water closets, we got most of those um within the project. It was just the labs. We just kind of held back on replacing all those. That was just kind of we had some contingency available. I know that Wayne had to go start changing some out, so we thought we better address it as best we could. So, the labs just didn't get addressed and some of the repairing tile and stuff like that. >> Shades and blinds, I covered that, too. uh leases old wings that would be mostly u >> I think that's
045white boards and uh where we need it and u >> so that's more fine yeah >> on on that would be more on the district side you choose what you want there I don't I don't know that we need to sign anything for that >> design mark you sign I would say the only thing with this one is that they every school had one now except for That's I mean and if there's money left I know it's a bigger number but if there's money left I mean >> that's all prepped right for >> Yeah we got we got a conduit over there for power but >> so >> I don't know it would be kind of a completion of all of the schools having somewhere to communicate to people as they're driving by things that
046are going on which I don't think is a bad bad thing. I mean, there is one there now, but it does I mean, we've done all these upgrades and we still have this old sign. I mean, I guess >> sign's been that sign's been upgraded. >> Do we do we >> Yeah, we redid it. We redid all the plexiglass and the frame and it says, >> but are we talking about with this one being like digital sign? >> Yeah. Digital marquee is what that would be. >> New mascot for the school. anything. >> I I just want to do anything we can do to make sure make sure that Wayne's way can get things done with only two uh full-time maintenance people with him and and facilities director. anything we have that can that can
047do the jobs and and we got the tractor last year which makes a huge difference on the sidewalks uh for speed and and quality work but anything we can do would be would be good for that. >> Yeah. And keep in mind, we just we did, even though we're taking old graph off your books, we still added additional new footage um that now you guys have to maintain. >> More sidewalks. >> And there's more sidewalk. Absolutely. There's more sidewalks. It's better accessibility. So there, you know, obviously there's more to take care of daily. So >> I just feel like that's less than $30,000. >> Like that's like a no-brainer to me. And I think we move forward on those two items along with >> whatever we choose from above >> because to have those items
048as soon as possible would be nice. >> Yeah. >> And to be honest, making those that's not going to make or break our our AC. If if if that break makes or break it, we shouldn't be moving forward with it because that's too close for me to >> Yeah. >> for comfort to recommend doing one of those. if that makes it or breaks it. So, >> yeah, >> I I think you're fine on that one. >> What is your feelings on us sort of approving all of them with the exception of holding back the other two really large items, which would be the road extension and the playground improvements as far as um so we could authorize this list and say that those two are contingent upon the completion of the AC and the civil
049I'm I don't have a >> Would you be okay with something like that? >> Yeah. >> You know, a big the pivot one is obviously going to be the AC. >> Yeah. >> If if that if that lands, you're going to get all the rest of it. If it doesn't, we're not that that that's really the pivotal one is that I see. >> Yeah. >> That none of us none of us want to go out on a limb taking the Oh, yeah. No problem. Go ahead. We're not I'm not okay with that yet. So, because we don't have the design. So, >> and if we drop lines and shades, that puts us at about $150,000 at that bottom line number instead of 55. >> So, that kind of gives us a little bit more confidence
050in that AC coming in wonky. >> Yeah, I'm fine with that. Again, the big pivot one is for me is >> Yeah, the AC. Just make sure we're landed. Okay. Fingers crossed it comes in there or below. >> Good discussion. Anything else for Shane? Anything else we'd like to discuss? >> Wayne. Yes. >> Shane, how long do you think the me time is for those units? >> Yeah, they're 10 to 12 weeks. Pushing outside of that. Yeah, we didn't really have I would have liked to have done it. We had to do our reconcile. We had I had to reconcile with Julie before I could even I needed to know we needed to know that that three seven was a real number, right? Um so she had to reconcile with me knowing I have all
051of our contract values. Not that she doesn't, but she accounts for stuff different type of accounting than what we do. Yeah, he is different. >> Yeah, >> different, but it has it has to run like I have to run my side like I do or it doesn't work cuz I have contract values. Um, she has a pay as you go right here. >> It's just a completely different way you have to look at it cuz I have to go out three years. Like when I set these budgets up, that was three years ago if you remember. So, I'm I'm projecting 3 years and and I've got to hold that line and then once we get through all of our contracts, all the design, all the permitting, all the stuff, I just got to go back
052and forth with her going, "Yep, I've got that covered. Got covered." And we finally reconciled and and we're right, we're very close. So, that makes me pretty comfortable with the numbers. But would I buy that? We couldn't do that until I actually had that. It would this wouldn't have been real if I wouldn't have been able to reconcile with Julie >> to me to bring anything forward. So that's that's why we're a little behind the gun. So >> and what exactly is that Wayne that you were just asking about? >> Actually the air conditioning unit. >> Oh the Yeah, the supply. Yeah, the actual deliver of that equipment, you know. And what I would probably do at that piece would we would try to get everything in ready to go. That we're just setting those
053pieces of equipment at that point is the way I would approach that project. Um even if they're laid, at least the last thing is just plug and play. You know, we'd have all the pieces and parts in. So >> Yep. I've already prepped the design team and when we met last week, I told them that this potentially could be coming and to get ready to to turn and burn as fast as we can. The nice thing is the same designers that originally we were talking about having it in there and then they had to design around, hey, what if this does eventually get put on? Do we have structural? Do we have the equipment, the right equipment? So, we've already thought about how we would design it and build it. So, we're not starting from
054ground zero. >> No. >> Anything else? >> All right. I'd entertain a motion on this action item. I make a motion to approve wish list items 1 2 3 4 5 10 and 11 contingent on the funding for the AC units. >> So a motion by Jenny to approve one 2 3 4 10 and 11. Uh pending the bids from >> Yep. >> the AC >> or >> pending the pending that three and four pending the bids the bid from AC or all pending the bid from AC? >> I think the rest of them are pending the bid. >> Yeah, we want AC to go through. Oh, you're right. >> It's a long motion. Well, it's like you have to be really >> I think you're okay to do it that way from the perspective,
055we still wouldn't award even let's say the AC does come in or >> um we still come back here for approval to to award that contract. So, >> right, >> we would still be coming back for approval. Each one of these are going to come back, no matter where we're at, >> each one of them will come back and say, "Okay, playground, we're at this. The AC, we're at this." That still comes back to you guys to approve. So, we say it comes in forward on top and is side by side. >> Oh, 10 and 11. No problem. >> You can just do those. >> All right. >> But that's why I wanted to make sure we don't want to contingent the whole thing. >> Correct. >> Yeah. >> I amend my motion. I approve
056items 1 2 3 4 5 contingent on the funding of the ACS. And I also approve items 10 and 11 outright. I make that motion. One >> 10 would be approved >> and one's not one and then do another motion and do the second I think that would be easier. I move to approve items 1, 10, and 11. >> I second. >> Okay. So, we have a motion to approve items 1, 10, and 11 immediately by Jenny, seconded by Renee. Is there any other board discussion on those items? >> Is that >> Wait, >> does that include the um engineering civil engineering? >> I take it as it does cuz one through four, right? >> We'll run a second motion just to make it clear what's what we can do right now. Okay. >> And
057then what we can Yeah. So we'll do >> 110 and 11 right now is on the table for immediate approval and execution. >> Good. Any other discussion? >> Public. >> Any public comment? Hearing none, we'll move to vote on the motion by Kenny to approve items 1,0 and 11 immediately. Seconded by Renee. All in favor say I. >> I. Any opposed? The motion carries. And then the second motion I believe was wanted. Do I have that motion? I'll make it if you want. Did you know I can do that now? It's a change. >> Yeah, we changed that a little while ago. I'll make it cuz I would motion to approve um 2, three, and four contingent upon >> about five. >> Two, three, four. >> Five. Thank you. Two, three, four, five. >> Not
058as easy to look this. I know it's not contingent on uh successful completion and acceptance of a bid for um number two which is the AC units and the civil work done on number three. >> Beautiful. >> I'll second this. >> Seconded by Kayla. Any other board discussion on that audience discussion? Hearing none, we'll move to vote on the action on the table by myself to approve items 2, three, four, and five contingent on the completion of a bid and acceptance of that bid for the AC units and the civil engineering work to be completed on action item number three, seconded by Kayla. All in favor say I. >> I. Any opposed? >> Motion carries. >> Great. Thank you. >> Got some orders now. All right, let's get going. >> I'll contact Annie tomorrow and
059>> Awesome. >> Thank you, Shane. We appreciate that. >> Thanks for walking us through that. >> Great. Nice to see some of that money, that last money disappearing. And what a great problem to have, by the way. >> Hey, the guy just walked out. >> Yeah, we certainly we very much can. Yeah, we wouldn't be in that spot without him. All right. So, now we'll loop back then to action item A, time for kids, DPA. Do I have a motion? >> A question. >> Yeah. Done. >> Do we have a recommendation to go with that item? Oh, >> is it not on there? >> No. Well, time for kids digital privacy agreement. Um, yeah, it got put on there instead of the recommendation, but Devin can attest to uh uh this. It's just you guys
060have been approving these all year. >> It's actually sitting on my table for Chris to sign on Wednesday should it be approved. uh just another digital privacy agreement that we're required to to uh read out those every 5 minutes or something like that. >> So is this a program we use or >> what exactly is this? >> Can you hear us? Um, so specifically it's uh time for kids is something that students in the district will use and because of the Montana privacy laws um we're required to sign with them that says they're not going to sell our information and they have to delete it after this many days. And so this is something that our students will be directly using. And then this just states that >> website I think your question is program
061>> what the actual program. So, Time for Kids is like a career exploration um platform that we can use to meet indicator 13 for transition planning. So, it has like we have very very outdated like a form that we've been using with our AP students. So, this platform um lets kids explore jobs. It has lesson plans that teachers can look up, utilize if they want, re for resources, but mainly it takes those pieces that they need to have their uh skill building quizzes done. So instead of us using like the one that's like from 1980, um this is a free platform that we can utilize for those pieces of the IEP. I guess my only other comment is is that the date on this says December 9th or something. >> Do we need to adjust
062that date? >> Well, that's the date that we send it to them. These contracts take forever to go through because they have to get it vetted by their legal team and then they send it back to us signed or with like minor adjustments. Um, and then we go through and we vet them again. So, it's more of we we can update it with the actual signature date. We just that's the copy that they'll have signed filed as part of the agreement they have to sign it. >> So just as long as we renew the I mean I just want to make sure the timing so that when we have to renew this that there isn't a month. You see what I'm saying? Because we're not signing it until the 12th of January. They signed it
063on December 9th to make sure we sign it next time before that date so that we don't have a lapse. >> Oh yeah. We we digitally track it all. So we'll be off the off the December day for >> Thanks. Thanks, Devin. Any other discussion on that? >> Okay. Uh with proceeding with a motion. >> Make a motion to approve the EPA for time for kids. >> Have a motion to approve action not made by day. Is there a second? Second. >> Second by J. Any other board discussion? Audience discussion? Hearing none, we'll move to vote on the action item A. A motion by Renee to approve that action item. Seconded by Jenny. All in favor say I. >> I. Any opposed? Motion carries. Next item B, anou for testing aid edition classified CBA 2025
064recommendation. >> Make a motion to approve theou for the testing aid edition. >> Motion by Rene to approve action item B. Is there a second? >> I'll second. >> Seconded by Kelly. Any other discussion? Audience discussion hearing none. We'll move to vote on the action to approve action item B by Renee, seconded by Kelly. All in favor say I. >> I. >> Any opposed? Motion carries. I am going to table number C based on the fact that it is uh should have been just a review item and not moved to the actions. Yeah. information only. Um, so we will we will just table that. >> So it will serve this is theformational. >> Yeah, this should serve as itsformational period. >> It should it's more clerical than it is. >> So it should have been
065on the agenda but only um under section seven instead. >> So it table would just be moved to items. It just be moved to seven. >> I think we need to take action to table it >> certainly. So, I think you can make a motion to table if you want to do. I mean, whatever, but I think we need to take action on it. >> Fair enough. >> I'd motion to table it as an action and move it to section seven information items for this board meeting. >> Seconded by Donnie. Any other discussion, audience? Hearing none, we'll move to vote on the action to table uh action item C and move it to number seven, information items for the duration of this meeting by myself, seconded by Donnie. All in favor say I. >> I.
066>> Any opposed? Motion carries. Action item D, LIS, donated books for approval. Is there a motion? >> I move to approve LIS donated books for approval. A motion by Renee to approve action item D. Is there a second? >> Seconded by Jenny. Any other discussion? >> Question. >> Yes, Donnie. >> Did we ever find out who donated? >> That's what I was just about to report on. So, these books were donated um by dozens and dozens of families during the move. We got books donated to us uh to add to the bigger library. She said we it's just a list of families all over town donated things from their like teachers donated books that they were uh going through. She went through teacher books that they were getting rid of in their classroom selections like
067their personal selections. Uh Miss Slanky went through there and grabbed books that were good for the library that would be would work. So she said there she said I couldn't give you a list. There's just dozens and dozens of families and teachers who donated books back through. She's gone through them and these are the ones she's going to add to the library. >> Great. >> Thanks. >> Wonderful. Anything else? Any discussion from the public? >> Hearing none, we'll move to vote on the action on the table to approve action item D by Renee, seconded by Jenny. All in favor say I. I. I. >> Any opposed? Motion carries. We'll move down to action item F, a budget amendment proclamation recommendation. Is there a motion? Would we like discussion? We'll discuss. >> Go ahead, Julie. >>
068Well, okay. So I'm just going through this procedure right now as of just to make sure that next year we are able to go through and collect all those um protested taxes from 2425. But um I mean you can wait. I mean, budget amendments have to be done prior to June 30th. So, if you want to wait on this till I get more information, one of the things I could do is I the more Donnie and I looked at the law. Um, we could potentially go back to the commissioners and say, "Hey, actually, we are entitled to that money." So there's no reason why they took it back from the school. So I just need to go back to talk to probably the commissioners because I think there's this the county needs to build us
069for it and then we have one year to pay it back. >> So they shouldn't have taken the money per our discussion we had. Mm-m. >> That's what >> because it says the treasurer shall build in the taxing jurisdiction shall refund to the treasur the portion of the taxpayer refund including tax payments and costs for which the taxing jurisdiction is pro probably responsible. So basically we have a year to pay it back. So we could potentially budget for it in the 26 27 year >> there be permissive levy on top of >> Yeah. >> So this is a formality. If you want to do it, we could wait on it till I get more information or we can go ahead do the I mean it's up to you guys. >> It's not committing us to
070anything if we if the board approves it. It's not committing the board to any action or anything. >> No. >> What's the um ramifications on this? Would this mean you would not run them? >> How would that would that affect the tax thing coming out in April? >> No, different. >> That's a different section. >> That was on the valuation them messing up and not taxing enough initially to cover what they're supposed to. This would be for the portion the 300 and some thousand that was the protested tax. >> So this is just for the protest >> schools are entitled to we set our budget. What happens is they they get they get the protesting tax entity they get money back and then their taxes are re or redistributed amongst everybody in the district. So
071they'll this protest this entity will go ahead and pay their percentage of the that payback. So they may say get a, you know, maybe they got $500,000 back in taxes. We'll end up paying a portion of that back to us, uh, is it gets reallocated. They'll just have a a smaller percentage than what they had before. So uh, >> okay, >> Donnie Chris. Yeah, Donnie, >> this is kind of my fault that we're stumbling over this right now, but this was really bothering me why we were doing it a budget a budget amendment because what you're doing then is for asking for additional budget authority and our budget authority hasn't been >> hampered at all. We still have the authority. Our problem is we're not collecting the revenues to fund that authority >> that are
072due to us. >> Right. So, I think there's a little bit different process we need to be following here. >> I kind of get when Donnie explained that tonight. I get what she says. >> The problem we're going to have >> if we don't get these protested taxes back, we're going to have cash flow problem at the end of the year, >> right? A big >> Yeah. And we talked about going back probably if we can't get anywhere with the treasurer, we probably have to go through the commissioners to force their hand at anything. And I offered to go with Julie to visit with the commissioners and the treasurer if everyone is in agreement with that because I've lived through this multiple times before. So I just >> I would really like to help through
073the process. Donnie, in the past when when protested taxes have happened in this district, they the county the county treasur didn't come in and take their money back. They they took it without our permission. They just took it out of our accounts. >> Yeah. >> Plus, so so that's never happened where they've come and just taken the money. So that's what's thrown a wrench in. >> And that's the other thing Julie and I want to do because every time this happens to us, it's a little bit different. When I was dealing with it, it was a 5-year settlement. So it was a huge amount of money, but it was only 20% each year. This time they what awarded them 80% of something up there. >> It's just totally different. And I wanted to Julie said
074she found my file from previously. I wanted to review exactly what we did and what we agreed because everybody at the county is new now, too. Everybody at the department of revenue is new now. So we have to work start over with everybody getting everybody on the same page. We've received poor or no guidance from OPI. >> She has shared those emails with me and just horrible. >> Yeah. So, and the other thing is I did talk to Lee Deming about this and I think it needs to be in legislature that yeah they protest that's one thing this whole new assessments coming out. It needs to be in legislature that they are not allowed to lower the taxable valuations after the budgets are set. If they're going to lower those taxable valuations, they could do
075it later, you know, in the year towards June June 30th being the cap date and then in affect the following year. Then we were able to budget for those lower taxable valuations. So that I I put that bug out there. I really think that needs to be a legislative issue. Um where they're just, you know, just going making deals with some firms like we can one year taxable valuations. We can't do that after the budget is that in my opinion. >> So they can't get the money back either like they did. >> I feel like my opinion is not to pass the proclamations only, if only for the fact that it shows that the board would stand in protest of the process that the county has gone through to recall these taxes and that they
076need to go through the correct channel, meaning the >> meaning that the county does >> to rectify this. That would be sort of that's kind of where my head is after having this conversation is that maybe we should just sort of put our foot down and say no, we're not going to declare this and when especially when it's not appropriate and that they have to take these though they need to be taking the appropriate steps. >> When can you go to the commissioners? >> I'll try to set something up right away. >> Probably go to the county treasurer first. Is that what I got? >> I don't know. was like, >> well, we they should know what we're doing. They should know. County treasurer should know if we're going to go to the commissioners. I
077would almost say we meet with them, but I I'd like to be a part of both >> and we meet with them first and let them know here's what we feel like. >> And I think you express the board's extreme disappointment in the way that they've handled this. And >> if I mean, if as an absolute backs stop, I think I'd be willing to do this by June or whenever that declaration dates possible in my opinion. >> But I mean, as far as this proclamation goes, I'd be willing to >> will have to be done before June 30th cuz >> Right. >> I Yeah, >> that's right. >> Yep. >> That's kind of how I feel. I don't know how the rest of the board feels about it. >> I also want to get this
078done before we lose Julie because she has I mean, Donnie is irreplaceable. you have all the history, but I also don't want to stick our new >> person with this 100%. I agree with what you're saying. I don't >> want I want them to get the message that we are not going to just roll over with this, but I also >> want to do it while we have Julie and her >> background. And so I think for now I I would support tableabling this for now until you guys can at least talk with the county and the commissioners and see what we get out of that discussion is where I'm leaning towards. >> I think we even need to include county finance because they were a big player last time too >> and we've worked
079with them too. So department of revenue and all that. >> Yeah. You worked with J You worked with Jennifer Jones? >> Yes, I do work with Jennifer Jones. >> Not that Jennifer Jones. >> And when I email Jennifer Jones, I have to make sure I have the right Jennifer Jones. >> I appreciate you guys just working through this. It's such a nightmare. And you too, Donnie and Matt. I mean, >> it's it's a lot. And I do appreciate you reading the law, going to brethal, understanding it, and advocating for the district because it's frustrating. >> Thank you. I would disable this until we have more information. We have a motion to table by Jenny. Is there a second? >> Seconded by Renee. Any other discussion? Audience discussion. >> Yes, I got a question on Could
080you come to >> Thank you. I guess >> state your name. >> Jeremy L. >> Um I'm curious about is this one entity that's distributing the taxes or is it multiple entities? And if is this a normal thing that we get to disputed taxes or contested taxes, however they say that. And if it happens all the time, are we budgeting for this money that's always incon always being contested, then why are we adding that money to our budget and it's not added as an extra, hey, we finally got that money. We still fight for it. We still go for it. But if we're budgeting and blowing our budget because we should have it, but we it's always under being contested, then are we really budgeting our money correctly? And it would just be an extra,
081hey, it came in, now we can spend it at that point. The the answer is probably probably a little simpler than your question, I think. But no, that's good. Uh the answer is yes. We have to have that money to operate. We're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is in this case, it is one entity, which I don't think we need to lash them over publicly here. >> I'm not going to. No, >> it is one entity, but we get we get protested taxes by community members. I mean, just it's normal and usually the numbers are very small. This happens to be just hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars, >> right? Um there's no way we could uh cut that. I would have to cut to a dozen staff to make up for
082the the cost. We we know we have this many kids. We have this, you know, we know what we need to operate with students and class sizes and all that. And then we know what we have to operate with. We know what it costs approximately to heat the buildings and do all that. >> Sure. Um, so this is the kind of money when you're talking hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars. It isn't money that we just it comes out of our a little bit out of transportation. It's all percentages out of the general fund, out of all of our funds. So some of those funds you're Yeah, we could uh we would be okay not getting that money right away, but for the general fund and all those types of things, um that is
083one option when when protested taxes are returned to the public or returned to the entity. Um, we could just say, "Well, we're just not going to collect those taxes." >> Well, I'm not suggesting that at all. >> Yeah. >> What I'm suggesting is it seems like over the years I've heard this happen frequently. So, it must happens a lot here in where you have industries. >> Sure. When you see it >> and they're usually big numbers, it's not the small stuff that we usually hear about. It's the big ones, which seems to be happening on the regular. So, I guess if you get the taxes paid back, that adds to next year's budget. Hey, and you know that sort of thing because if we're operating in if we're always in a negative position on this,
084is there any way we can get ahead of it? So, it's not such a what they did was is they we're able to by law request to protest the taxes. So, the the the entity pays those taxes to the county. Then they sit in a account. Well, anyone who's owed those taxes has the option of requesting them and then when there's a let's say they had their taxes reduced, the entity had their taxes reduced, right? So, we have a year to pay back those taxes. So what we do is because we need that money that right away for operating, we would collect those, we take those out of that account that they put it into and then we would those those taxes would then be reassessed the next year and go to them. So it's
085a lot more seamless for the public and seamless for us. But what happened was as soon as the this entity got a tax break, the county came in and just swooped the money out of our accounts without asking us. So then suddenly it's like wait a minute here. you just took hundreds of thousands of dollars out of our accounts. That's really what we're trying to deal with. Had they left it in the accounts, we would have said, "All right, we're fine. We'll reassess next year." Uh, and then pay them back within that calendar year, we would have been fine. But the county came in and swooped. So, we're going to meet with the county and try to get that money uh put back into our accounts. We feel like we're legally able to ask that.
086Sure. >> And then go back. So, so it's not an effect. It's not a big board discussion every time. It's not a a problem with us having to meet with the county and department of revenue and all that. So, we're hoping to to make that better. We just feel like that we feel like the county dropped the ball on the way they operated this and they're causing everybody a big headache in particular schools. >> Okay. >> Well, this is about our budget authority too, right? >> Doesn't change our budget. >> That's what I'm saying is meaning that but I think that's the other side of the coin, right? that this is still within our budget, right? >> It's just that they pulled it the timing of it then creates. So then when you say reassess,
087that means that money gets respre. So it's not like the entity just gets away with it and then permanently we're just out that. >> No. Yeah. We're not. >> It just gets respread. And so the timing of it if that's why we get to hold on to it because we can repay it next year when it gets respread out amongst every other business and homeowner and property owner in our district. So what is it's not like they get out of that money and then the rest of the district just gets out of it too. It's like that so that 300 shortage gets spread out between you and me and the Albertsons and everybody else. That's how >> and even the entity that protects protest is going to pay another reassessed part of albeit lower than
088what they previously paid. >> So, it's not like that money's permanently gone. And that's why, like you said, it seems like when we're talking about budget shortfall, it's because, well, it is right now cuz they pulled it all back, which what they should have done is left it with us. When the reassessment comes next year, then that entity gets reimbursed. And so that way it keeps like he said keeps the public's interest which is this school district um stable and um uninterrupted. Well, the other part the other part of that question is is this a regular thing? And I mean, yes, sort of in our district because of what we're dealing with as far as industries, but we never know what they're going to negotiate and we're not privy to that negotiation process until it's
089essentially over and we find out what they what deal they made. So the districts aren't involved in that process when someone protests their taxes. Even if it's a I mean somebody that pays 40% of our tax base, we know it's going to affect us. We're never a seat at that table and we never have a voice in that conversation. >> It happens in buildings too because you have big entities. >> Sure. >> You know these big multinational companies are or are in Laurel and in Billings and then they, you know, they're just trying to save themselves money. >> Yeah. >> So hopefully that answers it a little bit. It's that's one of those things that even after all these years like I'm still like and I'm in banking, you know, like I can't hardly ever
090I can't figure it sometimes. It's school finance is funky >> to say the least. There's a lot of new people at the county in the department of revenue and I think they just did what they thought was right and I think if they had just breathed for a few weeks and gone through and okay what's our options what do we do included us in the conversation um I think it would have been a much >> better much better situation instead it was you know we just wait they just took the money out of our account didn't even call and tell us nothing I mean >> and that's my argument for eventually I think moral need to move to uh uh their own account and not be tied in with the county >> similar to what
091we Yeah. what came up a year ago. >> Bank account. >> What? >> Bank account. >> Yeah. Leaving us alleviate. >> Yeah. Maybe >> they just wouldn't have the quick access to us at that point. >> They wouldn't be able to just take it out without if we were in a bank as opposed to we bank with the county. So they have access to our accounts and they just took it out. >> Yeah. >> Which is a totally separate issue. >> Yeah. >> We all know about. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Now let's not rabbit hole down that one. >> We spent some hours on that one already. >> Someday. One day maybe. >> Yeah. >> If you'll come out of retirement, we'll talk about it again. Otherwise. >> No. Okay. Yes. >> Any other
092questions or comments from the public? Thank you for that. That was a great question. Anything else? >> If I remember correctly, Jenny motion to table action item F. That was seconded by Renee. >> All in favor say I. >> I. >> Any opposed? Motion carries. Thanks again for all the work on that. Hopefully it hopefully that's a productive conversation and we can just proceed on and not worry about declaration or anything. >> Yeah. >> Action item G always exciting the 2026 27 school year calendar. >> If uh if you guys don't mind, I'll just present a few things and actually something that just came up uh after the agenda went out. We'll make one little change to the calendar. Um, then you guys can decide what it looks like. If you look at the calendar
093voting, we had two calendars, A and C, and they're both listed there for your reference. But C received about 2/3 of the vote, just a little over 2/3. Calendar A was at 32.9%. Calendar C 67.1%. So, a little little over 2/3 of the vote went to calendar C. Now, if you go down to calendar C, I won't go through the whole calendar, but I will answer any questions you have about it. And then I want to make one uh change to what's listed there. So, the motion would have to include the change. If you go to January 22nd on calendar C, January 22nd, it's a Friday. Uh that is the day off because we're hosting the divisional uh speech and drama and debate meet. >> I'm I'm ahead of you now. We're hosting that for
094divisional speech drama and debate uh in 2027. Now that is no longer I was told by the head speech drama and debate coach in RAD that they found out that that'll just be a one-day uh tournament. So that will actually fall on the 23rd of January, 2027. Okay. So that day uh will be a school day, the 22nd. So then what do we do with that day off? Well, that day off, I propose that we use it as a snow day. meaning uh we just go to school that day and we stick that day off somewhere in April or May or the last day of school, something like that to where if we do have a snow day then um then that cuz right now this will give us 188 days if we go to
095school on the 22nd. So, it just allows us to have a snow day that we put somewhere and uh if we if we don't use a snow day, then we we schedule where are we going to take it off at the beginning of the year? It's like, okay, if we don't use that snow day, we're not going to go to school on May 27th. We'll just we'll our last day of school will be Wednesday the 26th, for example, or we're going to take um uh May we're going to take April 30th off that Friday and have a 4-day weekend for kids. uh or something like that. So, uh this board can go ahead and stick that snow day/ day off anywhere we want to put it in the calendar. Uh because we will not have
096to be there on that Friday. It'll just be a one-day meet on the 23rd. Now, we can add anything you want. >> Oh, I didn't know that we're hosting divisionals next year. >> We're hosting divisionals 2027. Be fun. which I love hosting those things. Uh get number one is we do a very good job with the speech drama debate team but also it's just nice enough to have cost of hotels and >> that's a lot of kids put on bus hotels andrew budget looks a lot better with their home. >> Yes, she does. >> We also are hosting state speech and drama. So C gets us out on the 27th of May with she had track. So, we host state track on the 28th uh 29th and it actually starts in the afternoon of the
09727th. Do a few events, but uh uh we get out for that state there. Great. >> Um so it gets us out in May. We start a little bit earlier, four P days to begin the year. Uh kids start on the 24th. One of the other ideas I got was to take um a three uh that day off the first week of August or that first school week of August so we don't have a full 5 days on the first week. I certainly understand that but then we lose our snow day ability. So the snow day gives us flexibility and if we do have something then we don't have to worry about anything. >> What's anformational event? uhformational event is it's means that we're going to school on that day it's uh if you if
098you have the other page of the calendar for example um August 24th theformational on August 24th is first day of school for kids >> November those are not days off >> no they'reformational they're just they marked the calendar with information it's on a different sheet that I didn't want to confuse anyone but November 10 is uh parent and teacher options in the evening uh March 11th is uh parent teacher conferences for the high school and middle school in the evening. So that's just information out there that if you have the other sheet that will eventually be attached to this once it's approved it would just have some things listed on those school days but they're just >> do we have to assign that 22nd tonight? You don't you don't have to, but just be aware
099that um when I put this calendar out and I got to put it somewhere. So, uh I did send out an email to the calendar committee, I got some feedback with multiple ideas. Probably the best idea was to just go to school on the 22nd, assign that day to maybe somewhere in April or, you know, somewhere in in April there >> or somewhere around. Another idea was to put it on March 25th, which gives us kind of a longer spring break, Easter break. So, it gives us five days instead of four, that was an idea to put it on March 25th. Usually, we're done with big snows by then. So, if we haven't used it uh by the So, if we did have a snow day in January, not, you know, 58° like today, we
100have a snow day in January, then I would say, "Oh, we had the snow day, we used it up, we're going to go to school on March 25th." So that we would advertise that and let everyone know that school's on March 25th because we used our snow days. If you don't use a snow day, boom, take out Marsh. >> I think it'd be a lot less confusion if we just dealt with it now. Plus, we don't have to deal with it later. I mean, when people see this calendar and then later we change a date, they're like, "What was that all about?" >> Exactly. Yep. So we we will mark it on here as like the 25th of March as an example if we want a longer Easter break. And what we would do is
101we would uh mark it as a snow day. Uh and then explain what that is. >> It's about the final board time, right? >> Um usually April 3rd. Yeah, I'd be second. >> April favor. >> Okay. What about taking the Tuesday after the Tuesday instead of the Thursday? >> Tuesday. Yeah. >> What are we dealing more time? >> That'd be March 30th would be the Tuesday. Uh March 30th. >> This week's Yes. >> Hi. >> Hello. I'm Bethany Fuches and I represent the elementary. And something that I've learned really quickly this year is that kindergarten and the first week of school is really intense. And five days when they have not ever had to attend to that in a row is really really interesting. Um, so I would like to propose because I know of
102it like the first day of school, right? It's just freshmen. It's their transition day, right? Same at the middle school. Well, I would like to throw out there that maybe K12, we don't go to school until Wednesday because we don't need the hours. >> That'd be separate from this snow day thing. That would be >> correct. BUT I JUST TOOK FOUR DAYS. I KNOW. I thought you guys had decided on that. So, I just was like pushing you along a little bit. Anyway, >> we've never had a delayed start, have we? But between school districts, >> but I I I don't know that I mean, well, since I've been here with construction, we started quite late, right? So, that sense of immediiacy to get going and get started has been there. Um, but starting August
10324th, I think that that gives us quite a big bumper and then allows my staff to get ready and prepared. It also helps us in terms of kindergarten screening if anybody's late arrival. Um, so there's quite a few benefits I would say to having a little bit of a delayed start for K12. >> K12. So the whole Yes. >> the whole everybody. >> The whole school. >> Yeah. I will say this is something that's never hadn't been discussed and wasn't discussed in the calendar committee and hasn't been discussed from a we I mean it's been mentioned we've talked about it in the past never really in a in a official sense though but >> I think maybe we table that discussion till next year's calendar committee but um just so we can actually consider it
104appropriately instead of right now and a board meeting >> and this wouldn't have to wait till next year if we wanted to attack approve a calendar for example tonight as is with that move to snow days and then if the board wants I could immediately start discussions and we can come back in a month with an alternate uh some alternate ideas for for a late start if that's what the board wants to do we could hours wise it wouldn't be an issue uh you know I think it's K K3 three is um quite a few less hours. >> Mhm. >> Uh four and five were always right on the cusp of of what we need and we will be with every this calendar as well. Um, >> I guess I would like to see the
105calendar committee address that because I think that's a legitimate concern for our little list people, especially kindergarten where they're I mean 5 days. I never considered that until I was really on the board and hearing calendar committee discussions is the elementary piece of having those kids go from summer to 5 days in a classroom is very very hard and I guess I never considered that but it is. They went from running around sleeping in taking naps to now they're in a classroom for five whole days. Um, so I I would I think we should approve a calendar tonight, but I would like to see it go back to calendar committee just for that discussion. And if anyway, yeah, it doesn't have to wait till >> it relatively quick, you know, like in the next couple
106weeks. I can put a calendar committee meeting together, >> address it, invite AB into that, for example, uh, address it and u, and then bring it back to this group. Hopefully I could potentially I could do it all the next board meeting. Yeah, I love that. I think that'd be good. >> I think we've made adjustments before >> and we make adjustments. >> Correct. >> That seems to be totally fair and >> probably would have been nice. I don't even know >> my kids ever started on a Did we We never always started on full day on a happens once in a while then >> because I feel like my girlfriend went this in kindergarten like we started on like an oozing. So the reason the reason that >> Jenny might be able to expand
107the parent/board member on there, one of the reasons uh we put in calendar C any at all is uh we had we had some ideas from the calendar committee and they said all right we'd like to see this things in this all these things in one calendar and all these things in another calendar. So that was A and B. And then one of the things I wasn't able to get into A or B was is we're out. What does the calendar look like if we want to get out before Memorial Day weekend? >> Yeah. >> So, uh, I went ahead and said, "All right, I'll put something together and work backwards. So, if we're going to get out before Memorial Day weekend, then here's when we would have to start." And that turned out to
108be August Monday, August 24th to to make the 1080 hours for the for the upper bids. So that's really the what happened with the calendar C is it has a lot of other things that A and B had in it. It just got out a week earlier. So then what does that do to the front side of it and that's that's the result of it. >> I I mean I super like this calendar. I'm just I was just trying to think back like if we'd ever I'd never considered because I think like all my girls started >> kindergarten on the middle >> start after Labor Day or end by Memorial Day. But Labor Day in 27 is so late. So that was just kind of a non >> No, I love I love this calendar,
109but I think Bethy's points are well >> taken because I don't think that the district has ever cracked. That's what that was my point is that I don't think we've ever really started on a full 5 day week that I can remember. So, I think it's a great idea to >> we can kind of have our cake and eat it, too, because the littles could go to school starting on Wednesday and the rest of the kids can go, but then we still get out before Memorial Day. Yeah. Donnie, >> can I just throw another food for thought out there? >> Hitting it 5 days the first week is hard for everybody if you ask me. What if we mark the start of school and bagged the snow day thing? We get one free day in
110a year anyway for snow days. >> And I do get a superintendent emergency day every year too, which was what we used last year when we had that big snowstorm. So we don't have to make up a superintendent emergency if I get one. >> So that's always >> So start Tuesday. >> So just start everybody Tuesday. >> You could move the kindergarters on Thursday. I think we can still consider them. But >> yeah, >> there's five days for everybody. >> So, if I could just throw out an addition to Donniey's idea. Um because on Tuesday then would be that transition day, right, for freshman and sixth grade, whatever that is. Um I I would still lobby for us to still have only three days. Um just because day one it's pretty exciting. Day two there's
111a few more tears. Day three there's even more. But we can kind of convince them that it's going to be okay because you got the weekend, right? So there's there's a little bit of negotiation that goes in with that. Um, I mean I Yeah. Anyhow, >> is three days better or two days better? >> That's what I was saying. Should we do Wednesday or should it be Thursday, Friday? >> Well, I think I think we'd be okay with three days. I do. Um, especially because if Wednesday is the early day, right, then it's it's a a decent amount of time to kind of ease them into that, which is kind of why I'm lobbying for starting on that day. Um, and then you know, and even on the first day, we could probably run a
112separate Now I'm really all about ideas. >> Well, I wasn't even going to run a shorten day schedule, but I was just going to have just kindergarten parents bring their kids to school and then they could run through what that looks like. Instead of trying to do all my orientation in open house at one time, I could just do a separate kindergarten >> because I think that would really help parents, >> me compartmentalize what that looks like. But >> so that'd be on >> that would be on that Tuesday, >> your first day >> with everybody else except everybody else, but then your official start would be Wednesday, >> correct? >> You call it a kindergarten open house. All right. Kindergarten kids. >> And I like too. >> Thank you. >> Um I would have
113to say that I agree with what Donnie said about moving the start day one week because as much as we >> one week or one day >> one day one day >> shortening I my brain my brain mushed that together. Shortening the first week one day. Uh, as much as I love the idea of snow days built into calendars because that's what I've known all my life, the best place we feel to put it probably is that moving that first day because yes, five days in a week is a struggle and we don't have a transition day. So, everybody's there first day. Everybody's we're all in the pool first day. Freshman have theirs. They come the week before for their kickoff. But um yeah, it's it's pretty heavy and we took that lift on with
114this calendar because the payoff of getting out before state track was worth it. We thought we can we can make it through the first week when the energy's high, but if we can get one day back and even just make it a 4 day week, it it's it's probably worth the payoff there. that especially if we get a snow day and an emergency there or two that days we get that >> one. >> Now what do we want here? >> It's my turn now. Uh I just want to say I like the idea of snow day. It's kind of contradicting to every what everybody else said, but I think that we should be um going back and listening to the calendar committee. The calendar committee met. They uh met numerous times. There was many discussions.
115There's a reason why we have a committee. We had three different calendars. They voted. I don't care when we start. I don't care when we finish. I think I think there's an argument on on having five days, three days, four days. I've been doing this for 20 some odd years. Uh there's pluses and minuses on all of it. But in the end, you had a group of people that met numerous times before this that talked about this. We all could have been on that calendar committee. I could have been on the calendar committee. If I felt strongly about one thing or the other, I decided not to. I decided to let it to the calendar committee with the people that were at the calendar committee. Uh for whatever reasons, they had their own reasons for
116that, but they were the ones that were speaking uh for the district and for the teachers. And so I think it's smart to listen. I know what ends up happening if we don't listen to the calendar committee. It's why do we have a committee? Why did I waste that time with them? So, at this particular time, I would suggest the board listen to the calendar committee. Uh I think on the kindergarten that could be a further discussion because they have over hours and stuff like that. It's pretty easy with the kindergarten. Um, but as far as when to take your snow day and when we start and stuff like that, I think we listen to the calendar committee and we re meet this day for the snow day probably around March with the board on
117when appropriate in 2027. So, when an appropriate time is to get that day back. Just my personal my personal uh view as a calendar committee decided when came up with different start dates. So, Am I a little too cents for it? >> So, just to reiterate, we do have the 22nd of January, which we'll go to school. So, we do have that flex day. We could move back to, you know, take the Monday off. Um, give a 4-day weekend prior to starting school on the 25th as it's currently in there, unless we want to change PD, do whatever, but that's that's currently uh what it would look like. Hi, I'm Aaron Leveled, um, second grade teacher at Laurel Elementary School. Um, I was on the calendar committee and no offense, Mr. Tors, the calendar committee
118didn't have a lot of say in that, but you did that and then you brought it to us and we said, "Oh, yeah, >> we can throw that in as an option." >> So, the calendar committee really didn't. >> It wasn't It was only presented on the last day. All of them were presented on the last day. This one was added to that group um because I wasn't able to do any calendar meeting those other requirements that got out before Memorial Day, which they wanted one option. >> Exactly. >> So, I said, well, I'll throw one together that does have that option. Turned out for whatever reason it was more popular. I don't know why. Uh maybe it was because of that. >> So, my point is, Mr. Mr. Coopy, I appreciate your comments, but
119my point is is that the calendar committee >> looked at it and said, "Oh, yeah, that that looks good." and we we decided to run with it. But we did there wasn't a lot of discussion >> about it. And so to to start a day later, I don't think is a huge deal. Um cuz I agree with having a kindergartener myself this year and um also being a teacher at that school, it's it is a struggle for kids to go five five those five days, they're done. They're done. So that's just my two cents. >> Would you then support Aaron? Would you support just starting a day later and moving the snow day to that Monday the you know the 24th of August starting on the 25th or do you like the idea of the
12025th is no K2 then the K2 starts on Wednesday the 26th. >> I think what I would support is starting on like the school district starting on Tuesday and then K2 starting Wednesday. >> Yeah. It's a little serendipity that we even have that 22nd pop up. Just happened to be I was talking to the teach coach and >> we were saying, "Yeah, we didn't take the day off. It should be good." She said, "Well, we can do it in one day. That's what we're going to do it." I said, "Oh, that helps." >> Yeah. >> Didn't know it was going to cause 45 minutes worth of discussion in the board meeting. >> I just wanted to briefly support what Aaron said. I was on the calendar committee also and we we were interested strongly in
121one option that would end before uh Memorial Day. The other two options did have a first week start that that was not a full week. >> Yeah. >> And that was that was kind of an important thing. So by making this change, it would actually give some concession to the other two calendars that we didn't approve because everyone in the room kind of was aware of that fact that a 5-day week is a tough go the first. So it that's how it did come up in discussion. But you're right, it was rather serendipitous the change. So, can this just go back to the calendar committee along with the K2 >> or do we have to decide that tonight? >> No, you don't have to. But what I would suggest is we go ahead and approve
122the calendar >> with that date. For example, if we want to yeah, we want to move it take off the 24th. That's what we want to do. Then we go we approve the calendar as is with that change date and then we go back to the calendar committee to discuss uh and I would include all the administrators at that time to discuss that um potential uh additional late start that one day late start for K through two we want to go K through three all of the air all of the years or all the grades that don't require the 1080 hours or we just want to do K2 let let them bring that back to the to the group. >> Nice. Great. >> Sounds good. >> Anything else? >> I'm make a motion. >> Okay.
123>> To approve calendar C moving the day off from January 22nd and placing it on Monday, August 24th, and then then we can discuss other options later. So, do we want to instruct Matt to send to send it back to the calendar committee for those additional changes? >> Okay. Yes, Matt, please send the discussion of the late start for additional >> bring that back to the calendar committee. >> I'd bring that back to the board. If the calendar committee makes a recommendation to do the late start, I'd bring that back to the board uh just for approval and that'd be a calendar change. >> Okay. >> Which we do all the time, so not a big deal. So, we do have a motion by Jenny to approve the calendar as is with the exception of
124moving the current holiday on January 22nd, 2027 to a Monday, August 24th, 2026 and then with instructions to send the calendar back to the co calendar committee for further review of a late start for K2. too. >> Does that sound good? >> Okay. >> Yes. >> Do I have a second? Have a second by Kelly. Any other discussion? >> Donnie, >> is that confusing? Why Why don't we just remove January 22nd holiday and make the first day of school the 20 >> That's what they do. That's what they do. >> I know. But that >> is it just moving it >> to the start of the year. Just moving a day off. Yeah. An an off day to the beginning of it. >> I just think if somebody's reading it, they're going to go, "What?"
125>> You're moving a holiday. >> I was here. I'm going >> to read the go. I got it all written down. >> Just tell everybody they had to be here. >> You had to be there. You had to be there. >> Tune in to the 45minut calendar discussion. Any audience discussion about that? Thank you. That was great feedback, by the way. I think that would be a good idea. So, if there's no other comment from the public, we'll move to vote on the motion. And I'm not going to repeat it by Jenny >> to approve the calendar. And her motion is constituted, seconded by Kelly. All in favor say I. >> I. I. >> Any opposed? >> Motion carries. >> I'll do what I my best to get that back before the next meeting. That
126would be helpful to the people who are doing the scheduling for next year while I was working on this. >> Action item H, additional mentor recommendation. Do I have a motion? >> I make a motion that we approve the recommendation of Diana Koi to the mentor list. >> Excellent. We have a motion by Kelly to approve action item H. Is there a second? Second >> seconded by Kayla. Any other discussion by the board? >> It's prorated contract just so you guys know. >> Audience hearing none. We'll move to vote on the motion by Kelly to approve action item H the additional amentor seconded by Kayla. All in favor say I. >> I. >> Any opposed? >> Motion carries. Now we're cooking it fast. Action item I new job description recommendations. >> Yes. So under student
127intern, that's would be what I end up correct. So in the summer over the summer I would I was getting paid and under student intern it says unpaid. Would that would they move to a different position over the summer or >> It is different in the summer you'd be summer help versus student intern which is during the school >> and you just switch between the two. >> Yeah. >> Okay. that require the application or anything or do they just kind of >> um yeah it's a it's a it' be a process because you'd be going from okay summer health um which is designed just as summer help you your contract is just for that summer and then we would uh if you want to become a student intern maybe something would change a little bit
128you were working eight hours a day on the summer whereas the student internship it only be >> yeah I work >> three hours or whatever it >> I work from like 155 to 3:30 or something. But then >> that's almost as good as my hours. >> I know. >> I'm supposed to be working 8 hours a week for school work. >> That doesn't always happen. But >> yeah, >> Chase, use the term work loosely. >> So, are we starting with discussion? >> Yes. Yes. >> Okay. In that case, on the grant writer position, >> is it full-time, part-time? I'm confused. That's there's no confusion because it hasn't been decided. We don't know what that looks like. Um, this more than likely, well, not even more than likely. We don't have the money for grant to
129be a full-time grant writer. >> This would this I I my vision for this was it would really start out as a as a part-time uh maybe even a period. I know we've had a a grant writer at the high school, a teacher that was in charge of grant writing probably years ago. I talked to her about that. Um, she said that the grant writing back when she did it was more or less, hey, here's four grants. Go and write them and here's your time to do it. This would be more of a a position that would have a little bit of that, I guess, if we found a grant we wanted. But, um, but they they would be going out and finding grants as well through various websites and, uh, uh, uh, what do
130you call them? warehouses and grants online where you can go and see what you qualify for and all that and then uh obviously I would have to help and I'm sure other administrators would help and find those grants and then give them to this person. So I don't know if it's something from the high school, could it be an elementary person? We we haven't made any decision as to the time that we would need uh to to to do this. So that's not in >> opening the door kind of to the >> right. There's nothing in here says full-time, part-time. It's what it's what can we afford to do and what fits in our schedule. I would love to do some sort of grant writing that doesn't cost us anything initially. >> Donnie. Yeah. >>
131So, how are you going to advertise it? >> Not sure. >> Okay. >> Not sure. Not sure if we're able to do it or what's it going to look like? >> Do you have a thought? >> Could it be like an add-on? I don't know how many hours this would be a week but be like a stipen for >> we we talked about it being like an activity stipen you know hey will you know football coach spends you know 500 hours you know what would it would we expect them to do 500 hour whatever the hours are I don't know what it is we expect them to do something similar well maybe we make it a head coaching statement we talked about that >> or some other version of a statement uh that wasn't in
132the you know that's not in the CBA for example But but if if >> maybe it's an administrator that wants to do it for the site and do the extra time. I don't know. >> Can this then in light of that can this the way it's written accommodate it as a stipened >> or is this more because it's listed exempt? Would this be more or less like a job duty? like how do you how do you make it so that it could be flexible enough that it's a it could go to an exempt person like an admin or it could go to someone color covered by the CVA. How do you write that into one description or is it two different descriptions or how how does how does that work? >> It's one if you
133have any opinion but >> is that kind of how the head coach is written? Is it kind of written that way? >> Right. >> So okay. Yeah, >> I don't think it'd be. It doesn't matter. >> You wouldn't want to make a grant writer hourly because if they spend 60 hours writing one grant, then we're paying them by the hour. So, they would be exempt from overtime. So, if they were a teacher that we potentially would um give them this position, then we wouldn't have to pay them overtime for writing the grants. >> They'd be stipened. >> Correct. Mhm. >> And that's how our head coaches are written too, >> just like this. >> That's how they're written >> as like an exempt time, >> right? Because a head coach >> pays exempt >> a
134thousand hours. >> Yeah. >> And so we would want this grant writer to spend as much time to be effective just like a head coach would to be effective and then that way it's not costing the district more money. >> Try to give them a fair stipen of some sort. >> Absolutely. uh that would be >> it would be worth it for them to invest the time in. >> So you write it as exempt so that this portion of their income is exempt >> whether they're their full-time position is exempt as in an admin or if they're covered under the bargaining agreement as in a teacher. This portion of their income is exempt either way, >> right? And it's exempt if they're a teacher or admin or anything else. I wouldn't recommend hiring a classified
135person to do this because then you're then paying by the hour. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Because they're not allowed to have stipens. >> Correct. >> Okay, that makes sense. >> They're allowed. You just have to pay them by the hour, >> right? >> Would this So then this would this would get added as a byou. >> Correct. >> If we would we have to kind of proactively do that even if just to get it added to the list of stipen. >> Yes, sure. >> If if if we choose a stipen, >> right? Like that way we just keep the door open to ourselves a little bit >> potentially. Now the way it was done years ago by high school teachers, they had a period where they worked on and they said, "Okay, here's the
136grants." She said, "I was given these four grants to work on." And that's when I worked on those periods. >> Then we wanted to be a little more involved. So it' be >> Well, I think I think a little more involved, but it's maybe it's in conjunction with, for example, let's say me and the grant writer sit down and we find four grants we want to do right away. >> Yeah. and they would work on those and we find another one down the road. And so I think it's kind of a group effort. It's not going to be, hey, you're on your own, figure it out. I think we'd have to uh we'd have to sub subscribe to some of those grant sites uh that I that I uh got information on and worked on
137for, you know, when I was at the CTE conference. That's what all these schools do that have these grant writers. Some of them have grant teams. They they subscribe in these sites. you know, 500 bucks a year gets you access to all this grant information. >> Anything else on that? Well, I would motion to approve um the job descriptions uh for the grant writer and student intern, but I would like to add that we begin working with the union to add that as a stipen just so that it's opens that option. >> We would have to have it in the budget. I mean, right? I mean like if we think we want to hire that at some point if Matt decides that that's some I mean they've got to figure out where they're going to
138fund it and at that point it would have to be anou I would prefer that we we were able to give someone school time to do it so then wouldn't cost it all be within their within their bud orin that's the way Billings does it have a teacher that works on that and they're paid off the teacher scale um you know to to be able to say we want to make a stipen, I would say I don't know how many hours it would be. I think it has to be a fair cycle. Uh if it's going to be the same as a head coach, then it should be a head coach cycle. You don't want to pay him $2,000 for a head coaching job and you know should be 5,000. So I I think it
139would have we'd have to decide just what exactly the job's going to look like and then what what exactly is going to be the time commitment. Not that we couldn't move forward with working with that, but honestly, I don't know what it's going to look like. >> Okay. Well, I would resend that portion of my motion just to approve the grant writer as presented and student intern as presented. >> second by Kelly. Any other discussion? >> I my only question with this unpaid internship. So, is this going to rectify our where we have some I don't know if we call them interns that are doing some of the work that's listed on this or is this consolidating all of those positions under one job description? >> Yes. >> So, we'll no longer have like I
140don't know whatever we called the >> student worker but these sorry We'll still have student worker, but these individuals like Chase would not be paid. It would be like the school to work program. So, they would stay within the district, get a grade for it, but they wouldn't be paid for it. >> But then we have some that are paid for it. >> Yes, that is correct. But this would >> this would formalize the unpaid internships under a process. >> Correct. your internship at the school. It will be unpaid internship. >> So the next step would be to turn, if you guys approve this, would be to turn this over to the high school so that they can work their program out on that end. >> Chase, >> am I currently like actually employed by
141the district or am I just like here? >> You're an intern. >> Okay. >> I don't know. I probably signed something at some point >> and hidden underneath like food order or something. >> It actually says that I have to work the rest of my life for them. >> I mean, if that's what you want, take that. >> Not as an unpaid intern. I'm okay. >> But we do have a any other discussion, relevant discussion, anything by the audience. >> Yes. Sorry Jeremy again. Is this internal to the school employees only or is this external to community members as well or outside the school >> student school to work? So see >> not school work that grant writer. >> Oh grant writer decided that >> if I had extra money we might employ a you
142know a teacher for full-time to do grant writing. >> Sure. >> But that's all all the discussion though has been internalized in a job. No, but I know people I I know people that do grant have written grants for people and so I didn't know if this was strictly internal to the school and the employees or if it was >> it's not set yet. It's really about what we can afford, what we think they need. I mean, I'd hate to employ someone full-time and then they don't have much. >> It was sound like a full-time job, but like a per grant basis possibly or something. I don't know. I was just the way you're talking was that wasn't an option. I was just curious if you had thought about that or not. We've even thought
143about like a freelancer, you know, who could get hired and um doesn't get paid till we get paid type of thing. >> Um so we we've thought of a number of ways that this could look uh and of course we want to go with the lowest cost option that we can first and then >> if we need more we look at how we could ramp it up >> or if it's a success. If we're finding if they're writing $500,000 worth of grants a year, well, there starts to be justification for maybe having somebody doing that full-time >> or even dedicated halftime or something. So, that's kind of the thought. >> Can you say one more thing to Rene's question >> on the student intern? Um, this just legalizes our So, Chase can't come back later
144and make a wage and hour claim against us. I worked for the district. This just legalizes us not to have to pay him is essentially what it is. >> He's on his way to do that. So that was >> not enough until now. TOO LATE, BUDDY. >> Do you like these new projectors? >> You don't get a vote on this one. >> Not that you get a vote at all. >> I mean, Deon did most of the work, but >> when I was here, >> Yeah. He was here. He was support. >> Oral support. Yeah. Okay. Any other items to discuss on this from the public either? >> All right. Well, I'll move to vote on the motion presented by myself, seconded by Kelly to approve action item I. All in favor say I. I.
145>> Any opposed? That motion carries. Okay, let's move through some information items. Thank you again for everyone who does put these together. They are super helpful and always exciting to see uh what's going on in the schools. So, thank you so much. uh department reports. Just stop me if we want to discuss any of these further activities, curriculum, food services, technology, which is empty, but if you want to >> Thank you, Deon, for all the work you're doing. We can see it. >> Man behind the curtain up there. >> Transportation >> question. Yes. >> Is Zeta still Oh, she's still here. So, the three A's that we hired tonight, do those cover the three positions you had open on your report? >> Yes. >> Perfect. >> They're not new, they're replacements. >> MHSA proposals 2026.
146>> You guys would like to discuss any of those, we got uh Mr. Ferguson here and uh we go to that on Sunday and Sunday and Monday of next week. So, it's coming up. >> I would like to hear the proposals and how he's planning to vote. >> Mhm. >> Um, with these proposals, um, looking at them, there's not really any big huge ones like there used to be, you know, like the homeschool one, that was a big one one year. Um there's there's been some where um the transfer rules and kids transferring back and forth and stuff. Um a lot of these are you see some of them are proposed presented by certain schools. Um but two or three through seven or five is out by a school. But a lot of those that
147are proposed by the MHSA executive board are things that they've been advised maybe by legal or to get on the board because it's coming down the line. >> It's cleaning up handbooks. >> Yep. Cleaning up those things. So, um, a lot of times when it's proposed by MHSA executive board, um, they've done the background. They've done the checking. Hey, we got to get this in cleaning up the wording. So, I would vote um yes on those ones. Um one presented by Lone Peak. Uh this one's kind of interesting because with this one, it provides those schools the option to have contests with non-member schools. But when you have contests with non-member schools, you are not covered by your insurance that you pay your dues with. So being a member school, everything is covered. So you
148do have that that risk of um not being covered if something were to happen. So, this one will be interesting because what we do is we go to caucuses first and some of these proposals, they might violate a a bylaw. Well, then they're just going to get thrown out and they we can't even vote on them. >> Usually withdraw them, but that the caucus. >> So, so this one I I'm not sure how it'll go. It might totally violate a bylaw. I'm not sure. Um, but based on um, you'll get a lot of votes. We don't see this a whole lot in the class A and class double A, but you'll see this a lot in your class C's with this non-member schools where they're small towns. You know, this is by Lone Peak. So,
149they're seeing some um private schools kind of in their area that want to come to, you know, their their soccer matches or track meets, different things like that, and they want to add them in. So, I'm kind of either way on this one. um >> school is taking on the liability of uh of currently of playing an out of uh non MHSA school. >> So this essentially would say, >> correct me if I'm wrong, Andrew, this would simply say, hey, you're still covered if you're playing a non MHSA school. You're still covered by your insurance that we paid to MHSA for concussion insurance. Yeah. Things like that. >> Yeah. just allows you to >> It doesn't affect us per se because we don't play any of those teams. This is really a small B class
150C thing. >> Yeah. >> Um we we just or maybe they're coming over to play your JBs. You know, when I was at Shepard, we had homeschool kids, the homeschool league in Billings or Yellowstone County would come out and they would bring their kids out and play our C squad volleyball team, you know, for example. Um, and so they just played one night instead of practicing. We get refs and it was a big deal for the homeschool team to come out and play our C squad kids. >> Do we never get those requests from >> We that's an association in Yellowstone County. I just thought >> we do get those requests. um our schedule is is very full as it is with um all the other class A schools, class B schools, even double A
151schools that we play. So I do get those requests. We just don't have >> availability for them. >> Whereas B and C, they'll lose a lot of C squad games or JB games. So these so homeschool team may make up a JV game that they miss. So and so only has a varsity. >> Correct. Um, number two, six player profit. Um, I'd be in favor of this with this. It just helps helps those six-man ABC player. Um, just profits, approves the expenses for the championship games. um to be at hearings basically just saying that they're going to um up their fees and you you have it. It used to be you'd um you know 250 now 300. If you want it, you got it back. Um they're just covering their expenses. Um there's four four
152um executive board members per year. So, a lot of times somebody comes up with a issue that needs to get approved by the executive board and they want it like that. Well, you can still wait to executive board meeting, but if you want it like that, this just covers all those expensive cuz the executive board's made up of um people all across the state. >> Does the executive board ever meet by by teams or Zoom or they >> um that that's what this would be as well online? um academic hardship. Um this is just it's just aligning. There's there's been some special circumstances for um certain situations for academic hardship. You know, a lot of different um you know, full gamut. This is just basically saying you can um appeal to the executive board and
153they can make the decision if you didn't pass enough classes the semester before for some reason. Death in the family, you know, many different things, but the executive board would have that that option. >> They don't approve many of those. >> Not not very many. >> Those are pretty slim. Um, I'd be I'd be for it just to have the option. Um, and then have MHSA make the decision. Uh, number five, I'm for this one. It just lines all the transfer rules. Um, to be completely honest, right now, homeschool kids can technically get away with a little bit transfer rules. Um, so this would align uh sitting out the half number PI days, those type of things if you were to go um homeschool. I was just one of those kind of oversightes. Homeschool, I
154believe, was added 5 years ago. I think it was 5 years ago that homeschool kids in your district can play for Laurel if they're homeschooled in our district. >> Yeah, >> there's there's a few things behind it, but that's basically what the rule is. So this my understanding when this one Andrew was then if they change schools so they go home school to Laurel that they want to change schools because the open enrollment Yep. law they have to sit out. They can't say homeschool right now is able to not the right term to get away with something. That's not the right term but they don't they're not under the same transfer rules that that MHSA kids are. So this would just say if you're going to transfer and play at MHSA and you're going to
155leave bowl to go to Jolliet, then you're going to sit out just like any kid would who transfers to Joliet. >> Yeah. >> Um >> Yeah, but then they wouldn't be in their same district anyway. So wouldn't the rule apply then? >> If they live in Laurel and they're a homeschooled kid in Laurel, they can play sports in Laurel. But if they trans, they say, "No, we want to do sports in Jolliet, they're out of their district." So then wouldn't the rule apply anyway? >> It wasn't, I don't think, >> cuz it was nothing but homeschool transfer. >> So this is right and wrong. >> I think it's just filling a >> loophole loop. This is just this is just aligning it to >> one >> where they're at cuz right now you have to
156live in your school district area to participate in those sports. So this would >> that's the same >> this would be you move into Joliet um you go in that district you're still fine but you'll still have all the transfer rules fall as a home school kids now where before is your home school you're basically eligible in where you started. You couldn't really you couldn't really transfer or move but there was people getting away with it. So this just aligns it. Um six. This is just uh awards rule. They up the awards rule, but this is just talking about, you know, like um shooting shirts, things like that. um things that are really normal for certain activities um aren't part of the awards rule. They're just part of your your general um gear. Um, so
157it's really it's just um kind of upping it so kids can get what they need or the kind some of the flashing flashy things. >> So this is so like they get a practice shirt, they can actually keep it. Is that what we're saying here? >> Yeah. >> Okay. So it's not part of the uniform. Right. >> Yeah. It's not It's not considered towards your momentary um compensation. >> Okay. >> It's, you know, you're playing basketball, you get a shooting shirt. Yep. You keep that. And it doesn't go towards the $500 you're >> posters or something that you're keeping. >> Okay. >> It doesn't go towards their $500 annual limit to what they can accept. >> Yep. >> And then number seven, um just kind of cleans up. They did a a spectator ejection policy
158last year. Um, so this kind of just cleans it up a little bit. Um, because you might have somebody that's gets ejected at a football game where they're three games is a lot longer than somebody at a basketball game or things like that. So, it's cleaning it up. Um, I'd be in favor with this. Um, I think it was very very economous last year when they put this in. It just helps us administrators for crowd control. Didn't leave it up to the school and put it in an MHS. >> No, which we wanted. If someone if someone does something in our school and we choose to kick them out for a year, we still do that. This just says that uh put some teeth behind it for we still we still control our own school
159but does say that you know >> I guess that's my only concern with like the overriding of the the whatever the hardship one is is that as a school we can set limits that are greater than MHSA requires more than the 2.0 know which >> and so now we're allowing an outside entity to make a final decision on a rule that we've set. >> We would have to agree to it. >> I think >> even if the executive board decides it, we would still have to approve it. >> So even we would have to approve it for it even to go to the board. We have to be kind of a co- >> uh >> requesttor. Co- requesttor. Yeah, that's not the word. But co like I think that's how that works. We have to
160the school is the one. >> Yeah. >> We actually request >> we advocate on behalf of the kid. Not like the kid could just advocate for themselves. >> If we don't advocate, I don't believe they can get a >> No. It it has to have administrator sign off from, >> you know, similar to what the the transfer hardship is now. >> Okay. >> Um both schools have to have the administrator sign off. This would have to be Yeah. um your school's administrator sign off as well. >> This one says for the spectator objections, they'll receive a minimum they'll incur a minimum of two week suspension. If we choose to go longer because of what they said or did, we certainly can. >> So, is this like two week suspension at our facility or is there
161some way you communicate to like central and say uh this parent's kicked out so they can't come to your home away? So you communicate to >> other schools. You boot out someone from Hav has to honor. It's an MHSA suspension. So H would honor it for two weeks. >> Okay. >> theoretically. >> Well, that's so lovely. >> We do our part in communicating. >> Yep. Correct. >> And I would imagine most schools would be pretty good at this. This isn't a huge problem. I think I've talked to two people since I've been here. >> My my three years here, I've kicked out one person. >> I saw it. >> I get rowdy at some of these things. Get excited. >> Band concert. >> Don't tell you was it was in the line cuz they ran
162out of Polish dogs. >> Yeah. Did that. Yeah. Seriously, don't ever run out of post dogs when I'm there. >> Any other questions I can answer? >> Thank you. >> Oh, that was good. Thank you. >> Perfect. >> Uh C 2026 2526 books for board approval LIS. >> And we'll add the LHS ones in at this time too if there's questions. Financial reports, the cash report, revenue report, expenditure report, bond expenditures, high school activities revised October 25, November 25, December 25, middle school activities November 25, December 25, letter to Hank Peters requesting protested taxes. Principal's report for elementary, intermediate, middle, the high school. Committee meetings district ops 12125 capital planning 121125 leadership and learning 121825 superintendence report resignation report. Great. Thank you again all for putting those together. They're even though we don't comment, they're
163always so good. We enjoy them. Thank you. Matt, on the resignation report, the math teacher at the middle school, h how are we filling that? >> Um, we're look currently looking for a long-term sub. >> Okay. >> We try to find someone certified. It's always nice if they know their middle school math. Uh, we don't have anyone as of this meeting right now. >> We didn't offer they turn this down. Okay. So, you live out of town. They just tell you what you say. Oh, okay. >> You jumping in. You >> want to do it? >> Oh, do I want to? >> Yeah, that's what he said. What he said? >> Oh, I could, but I can't unless I resign. >> Sabatical. Rene's taking a >> to teach math. >> Discussion board member >> discussion
164items. Uh, food service. We wanted to bring this to everyone just to make sure everyone knows that that contract is coming due and to get some guidance on what we there's several places that we will probably bid out for this as is responsible. And then the other thing that um we thought about was uh bringing it back >> in house again. It looks like we're looks like we're going to get three bids. I've asked Julie to do some crunch some numbers and what would it if we ran it ourselves? >> Um we just kind of initial numbers. Julie feels like that we may be able to run it ourselves. Let's assume we buy the same food, same meals. We we feel like we may be able to to uh run it fairly fairly even to
165what we're already doing, if not be a little bit on the plus side. Is that accurate statement, Julie? >> Yep. >> Um you take on, you know, a little bit of hassle and stuff because now stuff I don't ever have to worry about just gets done in the magic of Sodexo now would fall into us. We would have to hire the, you know, some money we're paying Sedexo. they pay uh a person to run it. So, we would have to hire a person to run it ourselves. And we already employ all the cooks and the staff. And the only one we don't employ would be the food service director, which we would have to hire a food service director, but again, we pay for that food service director through our contract. So, that's not like
166necessarily kind of washed. >> Yeah. Kind of washed. And then you always try to run best you can. You always try to run your food service. So we don't need to make a profit. We just need to break even. >> So right now SEXO, you know, they they have to make a profit to run their business. So uh we wouldn't have to have that profit margin uh which would allow us we feel like potentially that's an option for the board to think about. Now, that's not to say we can't go through the process of looking at RFPs and and looking at all those and then having option two over here is okay, we hire somebody, we don't like it, then maybe we run our own. So, that is an option we looked at. >> Yeah,
167Donnie. So when you were looking at the cost to do it ourself, I'm sure there's probably some costs something we would owe Sedexo because I know they've made some significant investments in us. Have we ask? >> No, we we literally just started talking about this a day ago of okay, we know what it costs us is we we're just going to relook at it as an option for the board. Um, I don't know. I I haven't talked to anybody about that. So, you're >> I just think that's something to consider if we're really thinking about doing it on our own. >> So, you're prop you you would you would suggest that if we drop them to go to US Foods that we would XL money back. We could potentially exempt in billing when Sedexo when
168they gained the contract to Chartwells. When Sedexo left, they said all the small wares were theirs and they took them. >> They took them with them. So Chartwells came in and when school starting and we have no small wares, it's going to cost you $250,000 to replace them. Granted, Billings is way bigger, but just I think there's probably some things that they purchased for us that either they would take with them or they would want us to buy from them. >> Well, this conversation really was between Julie and I and has never gone any further. >> Just something to keep in mind if we're if that's what we're really considering to do. Are there any costs involved for us to >> Well, that's fair. Maybe we need to part of this research then should be
169to reach out to Sedex and be like can you itemize for us but you've paid and >> I mean they're in their business. >> I mean I non renewal people all the time like it doesn't mean that we're not going to go back to Sedexo but we're putting them on notice. So >> exactly >> what what would it cost us to exit you? >> Everyone knows there's an RFP out there. >> Yeah. >> And and it doesn't matter whether we were to go on our own or or they didn't get the uh they didn't get the contract. Either way, it' be the same for them. They still can't find out what an exit cost. We have a lot of sports or something they would want to take. >> Yep. >> Bunch of sports. >> Yeah.
170>> We don't have any sports in this district. >> I said you go on that. >> I'd like to bring that up. >> That's a complaint. >> It's an underutilized utensil. We'd save so much water if we use sports. >> It's getting late. Let's get out of here. >> Yeah. any other any the current discussion on food service. We just wanted to make sure you guys all knew that we were that this had kind of come up RFP will be coming and um if you had any feedback on what we should look for specifically I think we're all on the same page about >> better option more holistic food um things that the kids are going to want um that kind of thing. So that's kind of been put into it. Was there anything that
171we maybe had missed in that? >> I mean, I just think Donnie brings up a good point because even if we're leaving Sedexo to go to Airark, I mean, I don't know what'll happen, but that's still something we have to consider. >> I had never considered an exit cost to food service. So, that was a great point. I had never thought that before. So, >> we don't want to get caught in this No, I it's only fair that we have those conversations to special district whoever. >> It prepares us and it prepares and it could shape the way the RFP goes cuz you could say, "Hey, Sedex is going to D. They're going to ding us for 100 grand worth of equipment or whatever, >> pay you company, >> we need a $100,000 signon bonus
172or whatever it is, right?" So that that way we negotiate that replenishment of whatever it is that they think they are owed >> into the new programs. A lot of solar prim if you come to their presentations. Yes. They always feed you. >> Do they bring cheese all the time? >> Like we need to have each of the companies. >> We should bring the same thing. >> Yeah. >> We should have each company bring cheesy bread. you need to be in the >> RFP. A good market of school lunch will be on their prime. >> They can make a good primer. They can make anything. Anything else on this thing? >> No. Okay. Is there I I have one more question. Is there any kind of timeline or we're going to start the process? >>
173Well, I was waiting on a date like calendar start date tonight. >> I was waiting on that and I've already sent it to OPI's once. I got to change all my dates now and then I got to send it back to them and they've been pretty quick at their turn around. So, I'm hoping to get it out, but it's probably going to be our April >> before we make a decision before they come back. We'll get it out, but we got it's like 60 days out. >> Yeah, we got it with the timelines. April, >> we can make a decision. >> So, I guess maybe could we get a timeline once you have it more solidified? So we know what to expect for the problem. >> So she when you we can take the dates
174out of the RFP and say sent out on this day on this day. >> It's all Yeah, it's kind of on >> Yeah, they'll be like anyway >> and I've sent it to me change the timelines and I and I'm fine with that because I was waiting on this. >> We can definitely have this something. >> Yeah. Okay. >> Uh the next one is a boardroom. So this one was something I put on here. I I did check into uh as we were completing, you know, the boardroom finishes. Uh one of the things we did have a modest budget for some activity in this building. Um, you know, whether it's it's community chairs, uh, if we're okay with the tables, you know, we can look at tables. The tables are right around delivered anywhere from
17513 to about $1,600 a piece. Now, we wouldn't need as many because I can get a 6ft table, which would fit two people comfortably. You'll see Kayla and D, for example, are okay at this one. If we got one just a little bit longer, it' be a little bit easier. So, we would order less tables, uh, six tables as opposed to how many you see here. Um, but again, that's that's money spent on, you know, tables and not on on things. We also have the option, okay, what would be some different stack of chairs as opposed to the uh, you know, the rainbow that is our community chairs. Um, Those would run about um I I you know I have them quote me 36. They would run right at around 170 160 to 180 depending
176on what model uh delivered and then uh obviously then there's task chairs for the board if you're comfortable with what you're sitting in sitting sitting in right now wouldn't have to order anything. Uh, but overall, I mean, it's it's something I wanted to inform the board and get a little direction on it. I'm not, you know, I'm I'm generally a stingy human when it comes to monetary expenditures like this, but I just wanted to open that up and let the board understand uh, you know, what those costs would be if we choose to move forward with something like that. So, we went with all the tables, all new chairs and chairs for us. What >> you're probably looking at um you know, if you're not going top of the market, you're just getting the basics,
177you know, something very similar to what you're sitting in or maybe a little taller backs or something, you're probably looking at anywhere from delivered to price anywhere from 18 to about 21,000. That's conservative. gets conservative. That's that's going with the the non top of the line. Obviously, there's stuff all the way up to whatever anyone wants to pay, which we don't have that kind of money. Uh if we just choose to go tables, you're probably looking at the six or six tables we would need for 12 people. We'd go two in a table, but they would be a little longer. Um, we'd probably be looking at right around uh 5,000 plus a little bit to get them here. Uh, just for the tables, the chairs, like I said, depending on we want two dozen chairs.
178We want 36 chairs. I've been having them quote me 36. And for a nice stacking chair, a little wider, not a student chair, but more of an adult chair, you're probably looking at right on the, you know, without shipping about 130 shipping. It's a little bit extra. >> The other tables that we're looking at or that we have, they're powered. So, there wouldn't be all these >> that would not exist. We would have one plug in to the end of the cable and plug in would be say right by Julie for example, but then they'd all be connected and they'd all be powered off with the one plug in as opposed to the bevy of plug in. Uh they would have um a little thing here you would have for plugging the in >> the
179chairs would be and probably more like what Chris is sitting in as an example as opposed to uh you know the regular office chairs >> and they're um correct me if I'm wrong but that was part of the south school >> takeover have a modest yes epfany budget >> so it would not it's it's the bond stuff we contemplated earlier, this wouldn't be adding to that. >> No, >> this money is already accounted for within the south remodel. >> So, if we choose to stick with what we got, then that the budget I had for FF8 at this building would be would go back into the bigger pile. >> I guess my opin I I don't like things that don't directly impact our kids. And so that's my struggle with this whole when I mean
180Matt had sent that to Chris and I just the bids from and it was like holy cow like what could our teachers do with $20,000 like I I just like struggle with that a lot. I think that $140 for chairs that people sit in twice a month. I mean I understand that maybe there'll be other things over here. I like really really struggle with that and I think bringing it to this meeting although we >> Matt didn't have to bring it to this meeting because it's with it it's something we've already essentially approved with the budget that's for this building for this project and >> but I I think as a as a um show of transparency and um fiscal responsibility I think it's important for this board to have that discussion What do what
181do we really need in this room? And you know, the tables obviously, in my opinion, have to be replaced. I mean, they're literally like falling apart. So, we have to do something. It kills me that they're $8,000. Um, but they're commercial tables privacy >> and that's the way I mean, >> that's the way it is. I I just I mean I think it's I appreciate the fact that it was brought to this meeting and for this discussion um because I it's just a lot of in my mind a lot of money that is used twice a month in this room for us. I don't know I don't know what anybody else thinks. >> I would agree, but I would say this is is the face of the board to many community members and when I
182look out on those chairs that's just pretty sad. I feel like >> the least we can do is give this better option. Like I'm in support of that. Getting new chairs out there just >> they look so comfortable. >> How long have these been around? I I don't think any of us can even imagine how long these have been around. is there. >> And and to me, it's it's a one-time capital investment in this building that will outlast every single one of us here by a large margin. >> I agree. >> So, that that would that's the only thing that kind of reconciles it with me is like, okay, well, $20,000 over the next 30 years, 25 years, how much is that really then in the end? Do you have to buy them from these
183vendors? >> You have to. >> Well, not necessarily. I mean, I' I've gone to multiple vendors to get quotes. >> Are you proposing stealing them? >> Um, cuz I was just thinking back like they have those like how they auction stuff from graph. They do that for a lot of commercial buildings and they end like I got my classroom got tables and they were nice and so I know it would be a pain and somebody would have to click on like you know it would probably be but you could probably get them for a reasonable cost with nice stuff it might take a little bit more time and effort I know that has to be spent I haven't looked at any type of auctions or anything like that >> that is just a great way
184to find commercial >> 72 I just wanted to add these are actually the second life of all these tables. It's kind of interesting because these tables came out of the computer lab for graph. So we we snatched them from there, moved them off the boardroom when we took that one apart. They've already had a blended life and now >> we could go back to the plastic folding tables we used to use. >> There's at the high school over here. plastic chairs, too. >> Perfect. >> Yeah, >> not those white plastic chairs. >> Yeah, those are real real stable. >> That might be good. >> You might fall backwards, but it just looks a little taller, too. My shoulders are so bad every time I leave. >> A little shorter. So you can >> either my
185chair needs to be shorter or my >> shoulder I had shoulder surgeries but >> well I didn't ask but I would assume there's an adjustment on the >> I would assume but I never asked >> and when they're like you know >> I'm not a big fan of uh buying things without having said it just because of my weight. I like to be able to sit in things and see how it feels because you have, you know, the heavier crowd. No offense to Chris and I, but that's the, you know, and then we have the rest of you. And and I think that um we need something that if it's going to match, we need something that fits, you know, you know, your Donnies of the world, but it also fits the crystal rations of
186the world. So, um >> yeah, >> would be nice to I've asked for some samples. For example, I know one company had brought a few out that hopefully you guys got a chance to take a think. >> So, does everyone feel about proceeding with a modest update for these? >> I would support that. >> Yeah, >> I would. I think we have two great looking new schools. You know, the work that's been done there. >> Well, even here has been >> nicely touched. I think >> it's it's Yeah, Mr. Mr. Cleer. Yes. >> So, um it doesn't like that. >> Uh Mr. Torus had a great idea and I thought that >> I thought I would share this >> is >> I know the middle school would do an awesome job at making the tops
187for the tables. >> Oh, >> and it would be really awesome. The high school makes the welding class. I mean, you can do some really awesome things with steel. >> That's a cool idea. >> And these things are not that complicated. I I know at Elder Grove I made uh carts for our school, welded it, and I'm not a great welder, >> but as a class of making something that's going to stay here, and having the middle school and high school make something, >> that'd be fun. >> You could you could make some an awesome design. And it's not complex. Tables are not complex. I can make a dining room table. I'm not saying me make all these, but you could have a class easily make these that's for the class that I think fits
188into CTE. I just thought that that was a great idea Andrew had that I wanted to share with everybody that I think would be pretty awesome. >> You can wire them just like >> you could buy you can buy those wiring kits, too. >> Yeah. I mean, you could do and it' just be pretty awesome cuz if you make them these are all particle board. You make real wood ones. >> Oh, yeah. They're never going to >> They're You'd be here 50 years. They're going to out myself. >> Yeah, >> that's great. >> So, I plan on being actually >> How cool would that be to have >> stuff the students built in here? I super at least that gives it purpose because that's a that's a school project. That's a learning opportunity for those
189students. That serves a dual purpose. >> Good idea. >> Actually, really, that's a good idea. >> Then we can get some really cool He's just gutted for paddic chairs out there. They probably have these. >> I just think it'd be really awesome table. >> I agree. I think >> that look nice table or something like that. their uniform and I know the welding class at the high school and I hate to bring that up for the high school but and I hate to say it for Mr. Nicholson's wood shop but I just think it'd be pretty spectacular to see tables that our students built >> that idea. >> So could we I mean can we use money to purchase the materials for them to build them? >> That's a fair question. I wonder if that's
190>> a fair question. I'll ask I I would I would think we could, but you know what? I don't know that. >> I heard if they don't know, they don't care. >> I mean, we're talking 20 grand in a $65 million. >> Well, that's what I'm like. I mean, but I guess just I don't know. Make sure, but I don't know why. I mean, we'd have to buy it from somebody else if we cuz I mean, >> I would imagine we could, but that's I think that's worth asking. >> And I think we could document how we did it and what was done. I think you'd probably be okay. >> That's a cool idea. Thanks, Andrew. >> Oh, yeah. >> Get you a big bean bag. >> Yeah. Yeah. Can we all Let's just all
191sit in bean bags. I think it make us all more happy being here for 3 hours. All right. Well, thanks for the feedback on that. I really love that idea. We'll explore that. I think >> uh then number C, the high school bond. Just wanted to let you know that um those meetings have been going really well. We're having Annie will be here to visit with us the next board meeting with some they'll present some different ideas some different levels y of uh expenditure what is what is uh kind of hey we just did this here's what room cost we want to do that you want to do the whole entot you know meeting uh u well committee still talks about that they'll present so they'll have some handouts uh and some items Um I
192would recommend that after they present that we're going to put it on the first meeting in um February and then that gives us a buffer meeting. So if some there's more discussion or whatever then it goes it has to be approved by was it February like 28th or something like that. >> Um it has to be approved. So we we would be able to approve it at the second meeting but it's always good to have it on an extra meeting. >> Yeah. Just so something happened, we go to the second. So the board would be making a decision uh much like we saw in Billings where they had okay, we're going to do three bonds in building. So this board's going to have to decide just what exactly do we want to put down that
193bond? We want to go with option A, B, C, D, and here's about what it'll cost. So just so you guys are prepared for that at the next board meeting. >> Yep. It's been going good and exciting and I think you'll be pleased with the the progress and the direction that that committee has been taking as good. A lot of good feedback and input from the high school um and from the students. So hope we'll make sure that they include that piece too that student discussion that they've had um because that that's been very interesting to hear. So great. Are there any items we need to put on a future board meeting agenda? As always, if you have one, just shoot it out. We'll get it out of it as soon as we can at
194the next meeting. So, please do that. >> All right. That shirt
