Okay. I didn't know cuz of the music and stuff, but I think it's okay. What is that? >> All right. We are recording again after the power. >> You want me to pass those? Yeah. I want to see. I kind of read through these. Okay. Look at that. >> Okay. These are when you got a little bit. >> So on the last page is their recommendation, right? >> Um which I think is probably the quick way to go and then um if they're like no, then you can go back and look at the at the um comments to see what their comments were. Does that make sense? Mhm. >> So, I don't know. No, >> I was Are we also each going to go through our >> I was just going to say, do you

want me do we want to do this like you um >> you guys tell me what each of the panels said? I can document that. >> I'm just trying to keep These kids are so grown up. I'm so proud of them. >> Okay, so for the student panel, >> also this kid has way better permanent ship than I do. >> Who says the Steelers? >> It says student. >> No, but the Steelers on it. >> Yeah. >> So, what did you decide? Do you want us to go through our reference checks first while we're reviewing those discussion? What how would you like to do this? >> Um, well, I mean, you guys tell me, but I guess if you want to look, let's hear from each of the panels and then we should go candidate

by candidate. >> Maybe I'm just offering. >> So, how do we hear from each of the panels >> or like whatever the their suggestions are? >> What's the main what are the suggestions? >> That's what I meant. Didn't you say they each have a recommendation? >> Yeah, >> that's what I meant. >> She's at the very last page >> of that pamphlet will have >> four recommendations. >> Okay. >> We go through >> I don't feel like >> What do you mean it has >> like a second page back it says strongly recommend? >> So you have all of the >> Does each student make a recommendation or does the panel decide as >> each student makes the recommendation? So there's not like Sorry, I misunderstood. >> So student panel didn't say we like candidate

A the best is okay. >> That's what I was. >> Yeah. >> I mean I guess we can still hear each student's recommendations as well. Do you want you just want to kind of read out? >> Do you want me to just read them out or do you or Yeah. So Katie, you've got one in your hand. >> Read that loud. >> Okay. What the answer is? This one was for FA. >> Um, supporting students in sports. Doug Foul. Yep. Um, align with Malta, they gave a four. Um, offer more classes. Leadership approach and problem solving, they gave a three. Uh, motivate students. For anyone else, the score is one through four. if you haven't seen one of these. Um, facilities and operations leadership, they scored a three, wants everyone to stay safe. Professionalism and

fit, they scored a four. Some um, strengths, they listed encouraging, educate students, drills for school, areas of concern, no examples of student influencing decision. Um, a fit, why they'd be a fit for multiple public schools. They want students to succeed in life. Um, additional notes. He's had 11 years of teaching and cares for students future. Wants active learning. >> So, what's the recommendation? >> Is that all we need? >> Strongly recommend. >> Yeah. Let's go to just the recommendation. You >> want to do that? >> Yeah. >> Strongly two strongly. Um, one recommend. >> Is that Yeah. So, you said there's one strong >> two strongly recommends. >> Okay. uh to recommend another strongly recommend and another strongly recommend. >> Okay. So I'm given strongly recommends a four and recommend. >> So then that'll give

us a total score. >> Okay. So Dylan has >> So this is McQueen. >> Yep. He has four strongly recommends and one recommend. Is this still? >> Yeah, >> there should be one more. >> Yeah, there should be two. There should be one more. >> All right, let's one two three four five. So, five and one. >> Oh, five. Okay. I still want to read them individually, right? We can pass them around. I just wanted to >> and does someone have um Mr. >> AR three four five recommend and one strongly. This is all Chris. Okay. Uh, teacher panel, >> you have them. So, >> for Chris Art, uh, they didn't fill out a recommendation on one of them. >> Okay. >> Strongly recommend. Strongly recommend. Yes. >> And then NA. >> Yep. >> And

who was that for Kyle? >> Arms. >> So what was the total? >> Well, he has an NA, right? >> I know. One's an A. >> So four strongs. Three strongs. Sorry. >> There's four. There's four for teachers. >> Yeah. >> Uh, Mr. Fowl is recommend recommend with reservations. Recommend with reservations. recommend with reservations. >> So there should only be 1, two, three. >> Recommend. Recommend with reservations. >> Recommend. Recommend reservations >> because there should only be four. No, Mr. Luke was the one went out, too. >> He didn't do it. But he has >> cuz we're the ones where I can I'll be able to four. So, there was actually Chris Art has four strong recommends and then one that's not filled out. >> Is that Steve? >> Yes. >> And so then That's

a lot there. >> Yeah. So then what do you have left then? >> Recommended reservations. >> I'm giving that a two. >> Reservations and a recommend. >> Okay. All right. Then we're on to >> So there was only four submissions for about >> and only um four for AR. One was NA. Okay. Got it. So, we have to pull Steve out of this one, too. >> Yep. >> This is >> And there's an NA for Dylan. >> Okay. >> Recommend. >> Strongly recommend. Can they recommend >> another in Wait, how many were firm? Milky >> four, but one was an NA. >> What were they? >> So, I'm looking at the NA right now. >> Two, three, and four. >> Okay. Fascinating. doesn't make a lot of I was just curious. Are there notes on

the teacher one? Oh, that's just the Dylan. I'll just give you Dylan and then I'll find him at the end. Okay. >> No, the problem with the not One student did mention that Chris actually wrote down what they were telling him and I did like >> he made you know a surprise for us given the thing you know >> yeah but I mean students work on the the Gmail. >> Mhm. There's more than one student. He said he actually made notice of what >> we said back to him. So obviously um so for the student panel, Mr. FA has 22, Mr. McCain has 23, Mr. Art has 19. For the teacher panel, Mr. Art has 16, Mr. FA has nine, and Mr. McClean has 10. Say that again, please. Just the teacher one. >> Teacher

Art was 16, FA was nine, and McQueen is 10. Okay. So, um, now let's go to the to yours. Oh, I haven't even had time. >> Yeah. >> I need to finish that. But I have all my notes and everything. I just need to >> Yeah, basically. >> And this isn't the decision maker. This is just a way to >> Oh, you just want the overall recommendation though, right? You just want to strongly recommend or recommend. That's all you want. >> Do you want our numbers or do you want the back? Because this the back feels like a vote. >> What do you mean coming from the boards? The overall recommendation. >> I see what you're saying. >> That feels like a vote. But if you want our tallies, I'll give you my tally. So,

let's do your tallies without you giving a recommendation yet. >> I have mine ready. >> Okay. >> Go ahead. >> 20 for Chris, >> 19 for Dylan, and 19 for Doug. Okay. the student scores again. Do you have handy? >> Yeah, that's from the um that's from the strongly recommend etc. Yeah, found 22 19 23 aren't uh 19. >> Okay, thank you. What was the first one? What was that? >> 22. Okay, thank you. >> 21 for Dylan. If I find the rest of them, I'll let you know. >> Okay. >> Put 23 for Doug and a 24 for Chris. Like a harsh scar. Well, I think I'm Janice is my problem. >> I hear the more you feel. >> Everybody's going to score just a little different. >> Which is the whole point, right?

>> Yeah. Exactly. >> Um, for Chris, I have a 24. Doug, I have a 20. Dylan, I have a 19. >> Uh, Dylan, I had a 19. Doug, I had 16. Chris, I had a 20. Okay. Chris 23. Dylan 23. Doug 18. Um, so if you guys agree, do you want me to add everything all together and see kind of where we are or >> I'm okay with that. >> I think you should maybe narrow some things down. >> Okay. Okay, Mr. Foul is 127. Uh, Mr. McQueen, it's 134. and Mr. Art is 146. I'm almost done with that. >> So, I'm going to let you guys keep looking through everything and then um once you're done with that, then why don't we take a look through the references? >> Okay, this is done complete.

If somebody needs a lot from the teachers, >> yeah, I'm just collecting them here. This is >> Oh, this is just Heat. That's what we have. Please presentation. He says Heat. Heat. Heat. is not. I do long term. Oh, okay. Sorry. I just figured I'd start. >> I'll take Dylan. Whoever's Dylan, I'll take >> the student one. >> Uh, teacher Dylan. Can I take that? >> I have student Dylan. >> I think that's, you know, I have the You know >> when I read that I wanted to change >> but really fulfilled. >> This is crazy. How many kids do you like? >> You did a good job. >> They did good. I thought >> I thought you picked a very good job. I was curious to show you they understood the responsibility. I think

they did. >> They got it. 8 through 11. >> Did you go on? >> No. 12. >> No. Yeah. >> Ultimately, what did the students think of the process? >> What's that? >> Sorry. Ultimately, what did the students think of the process? >> I think they enjoyed it. I think it wasn't, you know, they didn't really know what to expect going in. >> Sure. >> And they said it wasn't, you know, wasn't as the time didn't take as long as they thought it was going to was one of the comments, which I thought was that's a good sign. >> Yeah. >> And uh I thought it was interesting. >> I thought one of them thought it would be a good experience for when they're on the other side of the table. >> I thought Yeah,

it will. Yeah. >> Mhm. >> Well, reading our comments, I think they understood the >> Yeah, I think they did. I was pleased with how they handled it. Y you need to breathe faster. >> I need to have this discussion with me. Now, if you would just go over that with me, I'd be like, "Okay, breathing not >> skimming." >> There was a lot of information there. >> Yeah. And I do want to take that into >> Absolutely. No, you want to give that the weight it deserves. >> Especially if they're willing to put that down. >> Yeah. >> You said next time you choose the teachers, choose the ones that don't think everything. >> That's what you need though. This one is >> Oh, I know. You guys must type or write a lot

faster than I do with how the candidates talk because I'm like I have to finish my thought apparently. >> Did you want to fill one Heather off? Did you feel? >> I actually did. That's what he did. >> Did the admin? >> I guess we have one. >> Yeah. >> Sorry. You're okay. And I wonder. Um this one that was not uh did you read? >> I did. >> Okay. That said this is my topic. So strong. >> I think everyone's got the same concerns. supposed to be stressed. You're not smart as hell. How's your arm? That's what I was thinking. You look like you're in pain stretching this. >> What do you do? >> Worst thing is sit like if I can move. It doesn't bother me. >> What you doing? >> I don't

know. >> Woke up one morning and hurt. >> Literally. I woke up the next morning and I've been doing physical therapy. They think there's a rib out that's touching a nerve that goes down my arm and my fingers are numb. And >> that's fun for you. >> Yeah, it's a real good thing. >> You should melt off to Bridget before you go to bed. >> Wonder why I woke up on the floor. >> Off the first time. >> What's that? >> Shut the alarm off first time. That'll help. >> Eric told me you could sleep in eight. >> Oh, I already read this one. Eight days. Katie hasn't done that. Teacher on >> We don't have Angel. >> Yeah, but she'll read hers. Don't have my what? The reference check. >> Oh, yeah. I have

them, please. Heat. Little Power. This is random, but Kristoff or not Chris talked about he's a bus driver. Does he have a CDL? >> He mentioned that, but I didn't know. >> I imagine he's probably driving an expedition. >> Oh, okay. >> With the size, I don't want to screw your system here. >> Put it where you want it. >> I'll just have like back side up so you can see what they are. Thank you. >> Can you show >> I wanted to read what he had to say. So I separately and keep them separate then. like she had already tied the points so I just made sure they were right. Now, the order that is that he will wake up on at 5 a.m. and go drive every bus route in his own vehicle

to see if they're passable before he has to make the decision >> to not do the bus routes. That was the example that his recommend. >> Did you get that from your >> recommended letter? My letter I had the letter. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> But the way I write it on there, I can see that. That's confusing. Wow. >> He's not driving a bus. >> I was skimming. See what happens when I skim. Heather, >> you miss crucial details. >> Yes. >> Let me do that. >> Missing important things. >> Also, I appreciate you moving us along. Shoot. I didn't want to hurt you. I don't know. I didn't mark my back, but I just have to talk. >> I do too. Yeah. But what do you like? When I see kids forms, they're all

right here. These are the three students. Make sure that's not just a car. You don't want us to take this decision lightly. >> I don't. >> No, I really really don't. >> Okay. So, um, now the reference checks you guys have. >> Oh, okay. Sorry. >> Cuz I'm the last one of the run. >> Okay. >> And I don't want to miss anything. >> Thanks. >> Okay. >> Get a cook. >> Carry on. Go get more food, y'all. >> Sorry. >> Don't be sorry. I don't think it's going to be a decision. We have a power outage. >> We've already had soup. >> Kyle say cookie. >> Got too excited. >> I fell for the chocolate chip and foster ones. >> I I do too. So I'm okay. I'd rather the only cookies I take.

>> You said the chocolate chip imposter. >> Yes. She stood over there for like three minutes debating if it was raisins or chocolate chips. >> There you go. Um I don't like too actually not my cookies. I have this pile left on these left. network. Okay. We're just awkwardly looking at each other. I was watching Kylie, >> making it weird. >> I'm making it uncomfortable. >> It's working. level. >> And it'll be public discussion as well, right before there's a >> the very end. Yeah. That's what I was thinking. >> Might have to shred those pill. >> Actually, I will take everything. And when you're all done because it will talk >> I go from not eating and then eating. >> Yeah, that's fine. >> Celery is the same. Right. >> Well, everybody's reading so

nobody would be talking about anything carrot over >> here. >> No more cookies. Jake, >> he's expecting Don't worry about >> No baby yet. >> Still none. No baby yet. No baby. No baby been in labor since this morning. >> I mean it is a long time but >> it feels to her >> that is a long baby said she's not having fun. >> Alice's answer to the question. Yeah, >> this is not fun. >> We need more details. >> We all know we all know it's not fun. >> We know it's not to be a hall of our buoy, is it? >> Like call the midwife. >> I need more. But my niece, so Emma should was supposed to have her baby today and then my niece is supposed to have her baby tomorrow

and have her. She'll be here. >> So that's what I was thinking is I wonder if Don will have hers before Emma. >> That'll really make Emma. >> She'll be she'll be ready to push even though she's not ready. >> So two babies hopefully by Wednesday. >> Okay. Okay. No, you're fine. >> We all know how to start. >> Yeah. >> Um, so do you want to read your reference check then? >> Sure. >> And then I feel like after that it's a matter of going around and you guys saying strongly agree. Agree. Right. And then saying where we are. I ended up talking to two people for Dubs because you just call until you get someone and then sometimes they call you back. So, um I ended up calling two talked to Alex Cummings

which is a current board member at Broadview which is where he currently is. Um Alex has only been a uh board member for the last for the last year. He spoke very highly of Doug. Um, I asked them why is he leaving? Um, and said he was kind of out the door before he got on the board. So, but nonetheless, Alex has a good relationship with him. Um, Doug is very well-versed in school policy, state law. He's never seen anyone do it better is Alex's um thing. It was kind of Alex's take on it. Um, I kind of pushed a little bit. I went off the cuff. I didn't ask all your questions, Heather. Um I I sorry. I said, "Okay, but can you admit when he's wrong?" And he said that's a struggle for

him. Um maybe uh but maybe not uh very gracious about it. His communication style is very blunt, very black and white, not a lot of sugar coating, plain as day. These are kind of the words that this um individual used. Um and sometimes can be viewed as rude by some people. Um, I said, uh, I think was this maybe a question? No, I think, well, I said, "How how have things changed?" I asked, "How have things changed since Doug became the um the superintendent at Broadview?" Uh, he said overall things had changed for the better. Overall, it was a positive change. There was a lot of things lacking policy-wise, which I think is what we heard from him today. um he was able to implement and update a lot of policy very quickly. Some of

that was hard for people to change and adapt to. Um uh I asked how how does he deal with uh people who maybe aren't following rules or I'm going to use the word toxic. Um and Doug is someone who weeds those people out, holds people accountable. Um his overall leadership style is very direct. there's not a lot of gray area. Um when there is conflict, he tells it like it is. Those are the words from this reference check. Um I asked about any large projects or initiatives they complete. They're completing this small expansion project on the school. The wait room worked on the budget with larger contractors. Um also doing something with school housing was some of his experience. Um overall the project has been successful. Doug is someone who really wants to see progress

and pushes things along. Um kind of reiterated some things around communication with the staff parents community. Um who likes to deal with things in house. Um but the board had expressed um his need to be communicated to and he he was able to adjust a little bit. He was able to flex with some board requests. Um I asked a little bit about conflict or difficult personnel situations. um expressed issue with a teacher. Um he was recommending a non-renew. The board didn't want to take his recommendation. He came back to the board, laid out all his reasons why, asked the board to reconsider, um, laid out all of the performance related issues, proved all of his, you know, this is what Alex was saying, showed all of the ways the teacher was not um, meeting expectations,

and um, ultimately they did not renew the teacher. like that that decision was made the night before I talked to this board member. Um I asked how was that received in the community and he said I don't know yet. So that was one of the things his strengths are his drive and his work ethic. He is very results driven. He pushes a lot can do it all um do does a lot himself. Um the concern is the directness almost too blunt at times like he said rude. um district operations, not a lot of issues. Problem when the uh Alex said that some of the problems that have come up is when the board has not taken his recommendations. Alex believed his recommendations have always been very solid and that you could follow his reasonings. Believes

Doug to be very trustworthy and ethical. Um people don't get along with him, but it's not because he's unethical. It's just they don't like his personality style is kind of what Alex uh alluded to. And I said, "Would you hire him again?" He said, "Yes." I said, "Is there anything else?" And he said, "You'll understand very quickly the kind of guy he is. He doesn't have an agenda. He's hardworking and straightforward." And um I also talked to um Greg Weaten, which was the other letter, uh from Welen Valley High School, and he pretty much reiterated the same things. I was driving in a car, so I couldn't take his thorough notes, but nothing outside of what Alex said. So then who did the other D? >> You did. >> So we do finished Doug. You

do like your >> Oh, are we I just thought we were going over the ones we didn't get to read. >> That's okay. Go ahead. Um Okay. I called Bill Wilson that had previously worked. That was one of the references actually cuz I tried finding other ones and they didn't. Okay. Um uh Bill had known Doug for over 10 years working with him outside and within the district. Um he was his boss for five of those years and I when I asked him if he would hire him again his answer was yes I would hire him right now if this instant if he applied here. Um he described Doug's overall leadership to be eclectic, straightforward and ethical. He listed his strengths to be knowledgeable, experienced and willing to learn from his mistakes and others. Um

he Bill described a scenario with why they had initially hired Doug and in his words to straighten up our elementary school. There was staff there not willing to work with others, non- cooperative and thought they ruled the school. I asked Phil how Doug addressed that and he said Doug approached it in a knowledgeable nononsense fashion. He pulled staff in, showed them the data on hey this is what's happening. This is what what's not working and this is the step forward that needs to happen and if you don't think you can work with us on this then there needs to be a different discussion. um he I think mentioned the same or he had talked um about how Doug had clashed with a previous board member and you had brought this up Katie >> on that.

um >> Mhm. >> he had, I think, decided to not rehire a coach and I think they um buted heads and I I think it was just a a personality conflict and he ended up leaving that district, but that was the only issue that um Bill had known about. Um he did say if something needs addressed, talk to him, let him know, bring him up to speed um and then just let him do his job. Um, these were my words. I said, "Well, maybe he just doesn't like does he not like to be micromanaged?" And he said, "No good superintendent does." To add to this, uh, Bill said, "Uh, again, no nonsense, but also not condescending or arrogant about it either. He just came across to some." >> So, what other ones didn't we see?

>> Just angels. >> Yeah, angels were the only ones. everybody else if we're in the packet. >> Okay, >> sorry next. That's okay. >> I guess I can go. Uh Chris, >> so I reached out to two of the three. I had a letter, so I reached out to two of the three. One didn't get back to me at all. And then um the other one did get back to me. They were a little hesitant to talk to me, but once we got going, then they started talking. So, I had Joe Nichols. He is the board chair and he was the he's been the board chair for the last four years and Chris has been the superintendent for the last four years at this school. So, um the first question that we had on here

was how would you describe the candidates's overall leadership style? And he did not want to answer that. He thought it was a ridiculous question and he was like no. So, I said okay. So, we started off real good. We kind of changed the question. Um, on number three, I just said, you know, did he bring something to your school that you felt like was lacking? Like, what did he do that you remember as a board chair that was so significant that you're so glad you hired him for it? and his thing was that he brought work study for the juniors and seniors to the school and he built the FFA program which he talked about the FFA in the interview. Um I did ask him, you know, how do you communicate with the staff, parents,

community? And he said he's all about the students. The students are his life. That's who he relates to. That's who he talks to. That's who he supports. He's very approachable. He's at every school event. And then he said, "I honestly don't know what the staff really thinks about him because we have never got any direct complaints about him." He said, "There's always someone who doesn't like their boss." He understood that, but he said, "We've never had any true complaints about him." Um, I said, "Um, how has the candidate handled any conflict or difficult personnel situations?" and he said as far as we know he does his job and we have never had those sorts of complaints to us either. So he very much in the end he said a good superintendent makes a board job

easy. Manages it well, sets a budget well and then presents it well. And that is exactly what Chris does. He knows what he's doing and he knows he works for the board. He is an outstanding financial superintendent. um loves the students, everything for the students. And then I said, "Are there any concerns we should be aware of?" And he said, "None. I think you should hire him right now. We shouldn't have conversation." Later he did say, "I don't have a negative, but he could wear himself out." and he wished as the chairman that he had maybe told him sometimes like go home like you don't need to do that because he is so involved for example when people quit to save money he'll just say like I can be the bus director so an example

he used is Chris will get up like 5 in the morning go drive the bus routes in his own vehicle to see if the in a storm to make sure that all the bus routes are passable possible before he has to make any kind of announcement to cancel the bus or bus. Um, he said he's filled it in the kitchen before. >> I can see him in a hairet. >> Yeah. >> How does the candidate manage school or district operations, facilities, budgeting, and staffing? And he said he's great with financials. Both the buildings are from the 1950s, and he has done plenty of projects on both of them. Um, do you consider him trustworthy and ethical? Yes, 100%. Without a doubt. If you could hire him again, would you? Yes, every time. Very sad to

see him go. >> That was the end of mine. I don't know who else did. >> I did. >> Okay. >> Um, I got a very good report from >> Did you write, Heather? I mean, >> what did I write? >> You typed it up a lot. >> I wrote a lot of notes very fast. And I couldn't even read half of them, but we got them put onto this piece of paper here. >> Typed. >> Yeah. But uh No, I got a really good report from Andrew Barber, I believe it was. He was a superintendent at a school after Chris. And uh he had kind of followed him around the state of Nebraska. Had worked under him at a school prior it sounded like, and then went to this school that he was at

currently to work under Chris. And then Chris moved on. Uh, and he was disappointed he didn't get to work with Chris. Um, he was, yeah, just he had nothing but good to say about him. He said he really meets the public well and just well admired by the whole state of Nebraska cuz he was out. He's he done lots of stuff at the legislative level for this for the schools and stuff. So, I mean, if you want me to read that, I can, but >> it's okay. But, uh, one thing I did find that I don't think we put in here is I think he was administrator of the year once or twice in Nebraska. So, anybody else do Chris? >> Okay. Dylan, I did Dylan. Um, you guys had a coffee. The gentleman I

talked to was very open. It was uh Tony. He was very friend with me, very honest. I don't think anything that he talked with me about is any surprise after reading it. You guys can read the details. I did tell him we had some very frank conversations. I said, you know, it'll be kind of between you and I, you know, conversation. So, if you guys want to read, you know, it have questions from there. But nothing was bad. He had nothing negative to say about him. Um, he would hire him again in a heartbeat. So, I mean, there's more details in here, but it was all positive. He's a very hard worker. He jumps in just like you could gather from his interview wherever it's needed. Um, just a great hometown guy. Um, passionate about

Highline and his students. Um, I did make a note on here on my deal because I do think that one thing that he didn't touch very much on in his that his um, reference did um, trying to find how I word that. Um, in his interview a little bit he talked about the lack of push back. I think maybe on from he gets from the community and his reference uh said, you know, he's probably going to underplay that basically a little bit, but that the reason he doesn't get a lot in his opinion of push back is because he's very good at communicating and very even keeled um and working hard to have good relationships. Um, so that was the one thing that I really wanted to mention cuz I don't know that I think

he did say that in his interview, but the rest of it was all very positive. So, >> yeah, you had talked to another reference of Dylan's over the phone. >> Talk to Larry Crowder. Yeah, >> he had nothing but good things to say. >> Yeah, very positive. >> Who wants to start that in the >> Hey, you had to move. >> Back to the audience. What are we starting on? What are we doing? So, I think now is the time for you guys to say whether you strongly recommend or recommend or recommend with reservation >> With each one >> and I mean because this is it, right? Like you've looked at all the stuff. We've read we've looked at all the references. >> Now it's time to kind of >> narrow it, >> start deciding.

Well, I will say that Doug really wasn't on my radar at all until after the you said your reference checks. So now I feel like it's just worse cuz his references were very glowing of them. I feel like so I don't know now. I don't know what to do. I guess for me taking into the teachers and the students account the scores as well and everybody's thoughts. My thought is Chris kind of came out ahead of the game um with Dylan being a very close second and I'm going to just call it out right there. I think my only reservation was with Dylan being a little young. Um I think that they are both very solid candidates and I feel like they both did an excellent job of talking about their positives. Um, I think

any given day if there wasn't the other candidate in the same room, I can very humbly say I would be okay with taking one over the other. Um, and I think with my only personal reservation with Dylan is just I think he'll do a very good job no matter where he lands um, with his commitment and he'd be a great addition to this community. My concern would be that he is such a go-getter that he would wear himself out. So, I think we really have to watch with him that, you know, it's okay to go home. It's okay to, you know, not drive to the bus. >> Yep. >> But I don't think that's a bad thing either. >> I think he was trying to tell us in his interview that I'm ready to focus,

>> right? Like I'm ready to be this one position >> and kind of watch >> my >> those positions be filled elsewhere >> on Dylan. I have links that over. >> So, can I um you're saying that Chris is a strongly recommend and Dylan is a recommend because you have way for me right now. I think we're just >> I'm not ready to discuss. >> Can we just discuss without putting a label on things yet? I think my reservations Dylan were he he's very we need somebody >> very firm I feel like right now >> but also we've gone through enough people I'm ready for longevity and I'm sure the teachers are too and that's exactly how those forms read >> like some of the same teachers were saying strongly recommend on those too and

I think probably maybe for those same reasons you know but I could also will be swayed. But I think for the situations that we have going, I think that Chris would be a very good candidate, a firm candidate. So I first advocated for Doug to be interviewed because of some of these results that he put into his resume. I wanted to hear from him and I still I still stand by interviewing him%. Um, I I still fully understand why his references suggested him. I have some hesitation of being too brazen. I think you can cross the line of being unprofessional. I I understand being clear and concise and I I can appreciate that in a lot of ways. Um, but when I look at the three candidates, what I what stands out to me the

most is um the ability of longevity between both Dylan and Chris. And so for that reason, I would set Doug aside and look at Chris and and Dylan. >> So now you're looking at Chris and Dylan. >> Yeah. >> So let's see like where >> Yeah. So, and then when I look at between the two of them, I score them the same because I think for for very different reasons and for very different experiences and skills that they have, they just bring something different but score the same to me and it's a really hard decision. >> Agree. I think on if we were looking at the scores I think um yeah scored felt lower for than Chris >> I guess. Yeah. Dylan to me I think of as more like he's going to get here.

He wants to be a superintendent and he's going to stay here. And that's what I think we need. Chris, I'm a little bit worried about the longevity and there's nothing tying in here. >> Family in Glasgow. >> Yeah, family. But that's not like they're not necessarily tied to Glasgow either. So, I just that's my concern. He's retiring out of one state to come to another state. Just not quite sure. And I think the same could be said for Dylan, though, too, right? He's moving closer to Shinook, I guess, if they're trying to get home. But there's nothing to say that he can't go to TA or >> Harlem or, you know, something like that. >> I do think Chris obviously has more experience with maybe things that we're dealing with or going to be dealing

with. >> Um, I think Dylan has done a lot of things in Westby, but maybe just doesn't have a lot of experience >> yet, you know, in the years. >> But same thing. It's a hard decision. I don't know. He is and the reference I talked to um he did talk a little bit about that that he is very much a go-getter. If he doesn't know something, he will research it and figure it out. Dylan. Yes. Yeah. So, cuz I had brought that kind of conversation up of what his thoughts were about that, you know, if he felt like that lack of experience would hinder this kind of a move from a smaller school to a bigger school. Um and he said that there is some you know lack of experience there in areas but

that because of what he has seen with him so far he has no doubt that he will research it. You know it just to your point is he and my concern was is he going to have the time to research and become knowledgeable in a quick enough fashion for the issues that we're going to have right now? And are is the community and the board and everybody gonna have the patience for him to learn for a little while with the understanding that we're gonna have to maybe offer him a little bit of learning grace maybe a little bit in there? >> They'll have to. >> I think they do because I think we've had such a turnover that I think we're >> I don't know. I feel like we're willing to put the time there.

>> Yeah. I think you have definitely has the possibility to be very longterm. But also, we have to look at why we've been having turnover and we need to figure out who's going to fix that problem. >> Yeah, I think strength is an issue there. >> I think so, too. >> I think strength is an issue there. I mean, I think we need >> somebody that's a superintendent or principal, whatever. there's a common denominator somewhere and we just have to >> I think maybe between Dylan and Chris we can go back to the question of like why Malta, why now? >> Mhm. >> Um so my notes on Chris's answer to that was the family in Glasgow, but then he spoke at length about the shared values, shared belief system and his commitment to rural.

And then for Dylan, he spoke um at length about like he's never applied anywhere else. Like this is the only other school he would have has has ever even considered. So >> I think for both of those reasons, which I would say are the same, is um maybe something worth considering as well. The one thing I really personally, this is a personal preference that I really liked about Chris is he talked a lot about the students and academics and there was a lot of like there wasn't there wasn't that mentioned with Dylan maybe like twice. It was like more sports related which is also important. I'm not saying that but personally for me I really liked the academics mentioned all the time in Chris's. But um he also um let me look for it for

a minute. I mean >> in my interview with Chris that was mentioned that the kids will absolutely love him. He's just a big teddy bear. Kids will just gravitate towards him. So very involved with kids. handmade. >> So, am I hearing that um there's a consensus that >> it's Chris and Don? >> Yeah. >> Okay, >> we've gotten that far. >> So, we've gotten that far. >> Just let us take this one step at a time. >> I'm not rushing. I'm just I'm just looking for consensus, building. I guess the other thing to kind like I don't personally know how hard it is to become an admin in Montana but you know Chris doesn't have any of this Montana stuff. I don't know what kind of process that is. I don't think Mr. Boops did

either. >> He did not. >> Yeah. So he had to do that process as well. >> And everything I hear so positive about OPI is >> and I kind of remember when Mr. groups was trying to get all this stuff back. >> I think probably the long lead item unfortunately is the background check thing the same as it is for us. Yeah. So, same issue. >> Um, >> but I guess what I'm saying is learning all of our Montana stuff. Like he's administrator of the year in Nebraska and he knows it like the back of his hand, but learning all the Montana stuff now. Are we concerned about that about our Montana laws? I just don't know if they're >> the nuances of Montana versus another state >> so consecutive across the board or were

completely different. I don't know. >> And the amount of money he has to play with at his schools compared to the amount of money. Yeah, both of them actually. Well, I think actually um >> but I'm sure Dylan's is a little bit his was more. I saw that somewhere the number that their budget their yearly budget >> I had it I think both of >> those which he showed us in his presentation his cash on hand was 1.7 million right now >> right >> which is what comparatively >> well the thing is is that I didn't really understand what he meant >> by cash on hand >> because cash on hand can fluctuate >> because drastically we have close to that on hand as well between all of our funds and our steps right >>

um but It it sounded to me like there may not as be as many restrictions in Nebraska as we have here in Montana. >> Yeah. And also I mean what he was trying to demonstrate was growth >> which is why he was showing his growth which I understand but three years or what >> his total budget he mentioned was 4.5. Ours five >> five essentially >> pretty similar to what I keep. >> Okay. So they're the same. Okay. >> Yeah. Um Dylan was talking about they he's just now having to deal with levies, right? Is that what you say? >> Because of oil because they >> But I don't think Chris has no Bond or Levy experience either. >> No, >> right. Neither of them would have that. >> Neither of them. >> I don't

think any of them did. >> Yeah. No, >> I think both Chris and Dylan were excellent communicators >> in their presentation and >> which I think is really important. Kyle, what are your thoughts? >> Well, my thoughts are we picked the best one and we hired >> Oh my gosh. wanted you to pick a name, Kyle, >> or give something about each or whatever. >> Well, no, my feelings. I feel that I guess Chris would probably be the guy I would go with because of this. Um, I just guess I had a good feeling. He just had a lot of experience. And >> before we start saying our answers, does anyone else in the room want to make comments about the last two candidates? I think both of the candidates are good, Dylan and Chris.

Um, I really loved Dylan's presentation and I really liked that he got up right there and he talked. He was super calm. Um, >> were you here for Christmas? >> I did not. >> He was too, just so you know, did not get to see that on Chris. I think I really like Dylan personally. I think he's someone that would stay here in this community for a long time. And I think at some point you have to give somebody a chance because yeah, he doesn't have the experience, but how's he going to get it if he doesn't get a chance to get hurt? >> Cuz he's only been there, >> right? I I don't think and I'm worried how long Chris is going to stay here. >> Understandable. >> That's what I was thinking as

well. Yeah. >> Do you think that he has Dylan has a a strong enough personality to take I do >> asked her said, "Do you think they'll eat him alive?" And she said, "No, because his demeanor would like >> I like how calm he was and he wasn't quick to answer. He thought about everything >> and then he gave an answer. >> And I'm tired of a revolving door. I would love some stability. Um, I'm not so calm, so I do like calm. Am I crazy? >> Um, I like experience, but I like I mean, we're all about helping people grow. That's what we do. Um, so him building, >> are we willing to give grace to someone when they mess up? I give grace all the time. >> I just want to be clear.

>> No, I mean >> because sometimes our community doesn't do that well, >> right? I I agree. We're not always >> very gracious. >> But I think he said he was made a point about building relationships, too. And I think that is super important. You've got to be out and you've got to be building those relationships. >> And Chris, I really wish you that one, too. >> Chris said that a lot. Yeah, I think that is really important. >> Um, I know that these two are my top two choices also. I mean, I like Chris's, like you said, the years of experience. We need somebody now like that bold like this is what it's going to be. It's going to be this way. If you don't like it, it's my, you know what I mean?

But it's the same thing I'm worried about. He's already retired. He didn't say anything in the teacher panel about family because like that was one of my biggest concerns as he was talking about his family in Nebraska. He didn't mention anything to us about family ties in Glasgow. >> So that was a big concern of mine is like >> you know what I mean? And like I told Mr. Boops, no offense to you, but that's what you're going to be in your family. Like how long are we going to have him? Especially since he's already resigned in Nebraska about but because he didn't say anything to us about having family in Glasgow, you know. So we get to hear the why Malta, why do we want this place? You know what I mean? Um I

loved how he was Yes. very student driven. He told us he asked us the exact same questions he asked the students just to see what connections we have. And he said our student answers and what the teachers answered were almost the exact same answers. Like he goes like it was like what are which are you afraid about? Are you serious the biggest challenges? you know, like that type of stuff. He goes, "That shows that you guys are connected, you know, which is good, you know, and but like Dylan, I'm like, Katie, I'm tired of the every 3 years a new superintendent or a new principal or everything. I'm ready for the stability." And yes, I think Dylan would be the longevity person. I told these guys when he first walked in, I said, "I thought

it would remind me of what Chris Kewin probably looked like when he very first started his job." you know, but I mean it's I feel with him he would be the longevity which >> I guess I'm looking at how long my longevity is probably left. I'd like to see a superintendent outlast me right now. >> You know what I mean? Like I I mean I know I'm not going to be here for the next whatever years. But we need the longevity equals consistency. And that's what sometimes what we're lacking right now is that consistency because a person comes in, they stay for 3 years, then they're gone. And then we're learning the new consistency again. About the time we build the relationship and the consistency, they're gone again. >> Whereas I feel with Dylan, you

would have that longer thing. But with Chris, like you said, with things that are going on right now, it's like it's gonna he's going to come in. You know what I mean? So I'm six in one hand, half a dozen in the other. I could I see myself working for both of them? Yes. I mean, Chris said he's not the woohoo cheerleader and Stephen's like, "Well, Terry can be your woohoo cheerleader. We can try ideas, you know, but he's willing to support his staff and anything." And I think Dylan would be too like, >> but I think Dylan could shake us up too, just a different approach. >> Well, he said he doesn't often get fired up, but >> but that doesn't mean he doesn't hold boundaries, right? Yeah, >> it's kind of all the

same thing that you guys have been saying and then this isn't going to help you at all, but I thought so like when I scored them, Dylan was one point higher than Chris. >> Okay, >> is that right? The right points. And >> and so then I was just sitting here thinking about the leftover pizza and thinking, you know, I think we're going to be in good hands whichever we decide, >> right? >> But I'm tipped towards Dylan and it's the it's the longevity. It's the it's the the the hope of longevity. There's no guarantee for anything. >> No. >> My concerns are the same thing though. Even if we get someone with intentions of longevity, if they're not strong enough to deal with any staffing issues that there could be or have been, what's

to say he's like, I'm out. >> Like our staff can email admin, not all. >> Not all, >> and spit them out. And that's That's what I'm concerned about. >> Yeah. >> I think we're pretty nice. >> You're a badass. They're probably not allowed to say that. >> Amen. >> But is he responsible for our staff? >> Really? >> What do you mean? Ask that principal is more responsible for >> taking care of the evaluations and >> Sure. But it's still the town at the top, right? It's still the culture building >> trickles down. >> Yeah. It's culture building. I think Dylan can do that. >> Yeah. >> Because we never really saw Chris and we didn't really see Mr. Luke's that much, you know, I mean, unless there was issues. Um, so I want

to say my big thing is this. And when he said it's really important about the basketball, even if we offered and there's no basketball, like we say sorry, like is he going to say anything? >> That was the one last thing that I was going to bring up as well. And I I I hate that we have to as a board ask the same exact questions to all of them because >> in the references and in his speech and everything, you can tell how passionate he is about coaching >> and being involved. And um yeah, I think being able to focus on just the superintendent position will be helpful to him and it will be learning to him. But uh I'm a little concerned that if we don't think that with everything going on in

the learning right off the bat that he's going to have time to coach you and I want to, would he be willing to maybe take if it worked out like a volunteer or a middle school or something that maybe was less time than a high school? Is is that still something he really wants to do? So, it's more of a volunteer with less time to be able to handle the superintendent. >> Well, is that going to be okay with him? >> He's been doing 20 jobs. It's going to in his mind maybe that's all he's ever known. So, it's going to be harder to do that. He's almost off the record. >> No, we are being reported. >> And I guess >> I know too one thing that um like Dylan said his wife is

a teacher. What if we don't have a position for his wife? I mean, I know there's positions and stuff, but you know what I mean? Like, is that a make or break? Is that a make or break thing for him? Whether or not we have a position for his wife, >> you don't know. I don't know. >> I know that's for him to, you know, for me, depending on how picky they are, looking at some of the personnel conversations that we've had, I guess I don't feel super confident that there will be something. >> Right. Agreed. >> And I mean like >> she might be willing to do, you know what I mean? Even if it's temporary, if they really are committed to this community and maybe wanting to give this a world, she should

be a full-time. >> I mean, we've talked about that in personnel. We brought that at the last meeting of possibly Mr. Brooks had brought something like that up of having >> possibly looking at a permanent sub or something somewhere to move in. I'm just saying, you know, we can't guarantee that there's not a position for her, but I'll be floored with what we've seen on personnel committee the last few years that there's something and if they're committed it being in this community, >> you know, even if it's for a while, maybe it's something along those lines that she might be willing to take on if that's at some point. I would think with all these notice babies. >> And Heather, you'd be working with them every day. >> Do you have any add more on

the >> um I would say that it's going to be really tough to choose between the two of them. I would say probably I'm going to have to support Dylan a lot more than I would have to support Chris just because of a um of an experience. Right. >> Right. and all of Dylan's experiences at a single school, a very small school, um, which, you know, has positives and negatives, but I think I'm probably going to have to support him a lot more than I would Chris. That being said, I'm probably have to support Chris more in things like Montana legislation, >> um, Montana law, you know, that kind of stuff. while he gets up to speak. Um, so Terry lipsticks one, it happens when the other, right? I think either one is going to

take some sort of brand of support and just smash. >> Speak up, gentlemen. I know Mr. >> Yeah, I hear behind me. >> I would like to hear cuz you were in on all of them. I don't know if Mr. Norby, if you got to go ahead and listen to all, but I know you got to hear them all being the student. Do you have any insight? Um, I would say I kind of agree with what you guys have said in terms of the top two. Um, those two being the two that I thought stood out. Um, I don't know. I mean, I I think both bring certain things to the table. Certainly, I thought all three of them I commented to the teachers. I thought that they had three very different personalities. Um, I

think I understand. I mean, I'm not I don't want I understand the concern about, you know, worrying about experience, but I wonder how long someone has to do a job before experience isn't a concern anymore. Um, I know we've hired quite a few administrators in the last couple years that had a lot of experience and they're not here anymore. Um, so I don't know that necessarily years of experience is automatic guarantee of anything and I don't think lack of years of experience is automatically a guarantee of anything. So that said, I don't think that Chris would do a bad job. Um, so I just think that, you know, yeah, I mean, no experience is different than less experience >> and less experience isn't always a bad thing. >> And so, but I do think that

>> Sorry. >> Yeah, I thought both candidates were pretty decent. Yep. >> Okay. Nor, did you sit in on anything? >> No, I didn't. Um, but I guess when I when I hear the experience thing, it >> right >> kind of sets me off cuz I'm so young. >> Um, and if you don't give a person a chance, you know, you're not you're not ever going to be able to be anything. So, not saying that I've done a great job or or anything, but I'm still here. you guys keep hiring me back. >> I had zero experience coming into the position and I hope you guys are happy with that hire and I'm not saying that Dylan's the exact same as me, but I think that there's the possibility for growth and like everybody else

is saying is longevity. In my opinion, I think that is a bigger p picture deal for Malta and the culture of the school moving forward. And I would say Dylan has an inquiring and eager mind >> and the experience doesn't >> and he's not afraid to go and find the answers. >> Mom said he was hungry >> and to get after it and the experience thing doesn't bother me as bad as like just the personality. I'm just worried he just doesn't have a strong enough. >> We got some things we need to clean up. >> So I have one more question. It's kind of more of the coaching aspect and it's more of just in general when we have a superintendent. Do you feel like after having been at AG in this town that it's

even a possibility that we would have like a superintendent be a coach of any higher position in it be able to be successful? This is very hard town to coach in. >> I don't I don't see it being a problem. I don't think right off the bat. I think you got to get your feet wet and learn the community and learn how the school operates. Um, but I think with experience and and and learning how the school operates that you'd be able to step in on something as far as assistant coach and maybe even later on in the career head coach. >> You would kind of see how it goes and how it was perceived. You don't see it causing any issues internally necessarily. I mean, there's always a possibility for that >> or there's

going to be an issue. I mean, let's just throw that out there. There's always, it doesn't matter who's coaching or whatever sport or anything, there's always an issue. Something will come up eventually on Sunday. But >> we've gone through a lot more administrators than coaches in the last 10 years. >> Um, that's kind of my concern when you combine the two. My concern is the time. >> I think it really is up to the person themselves to figure out if they have enough time to do it or not >> and the staff working with them, right? Cuz would be >> delegate. We had coaches that were administrators before. >> Yeah. Mr. Shy was >> Shai was Kane was I was Chris did some middle school coaching I mean so we've had that before >> it

all depends on >> it >> a lot of it depends if you're at a superintendent I think a lot it's going to depend on who your principles are >> honestly >> okay >> and if they if if they're taking care of their stuff then the superintendent theoretically have enough time to do that >> thank you that's always some additional input in that department because you can tell how >> ultimately it's your guys' decision if they're going to be a coach or not >> while they're administrators. >> But I guess in the past too, you know, and our current baby's thoughts around that of knowing how passionate Dylan seems to be about basketball with that especially being the followup question that he asked us as a board, you know, that's helpful at least for me. >>

Are you ready for a motion? I'm going to make a motion. Is everybody go for it? Because if I do it and you guys wait too long, then it gets knocked off the table. So, I already >> Everybody's got their >> Yeah. Okay. >> Yeah. Everybody knows who they are. What are we doing? Is everyone just going insane? >> I'm going to make their vote and don't sit there and make it kick off. >> You tell me what to do, guys. >> I make a motion to hire Dylan as the superintendent. Now, in part of that, are we going to say if he does not take this, then we give Mr. Brooks or whoever the opportunity to offer to then Chris the position? So, we did it before. Okay. >> And right then, does it

also go to finance to negotiate like we have in the past? >> Yes. Okay. Yep. So, I make a motion to hire Dylan as a superintendent with Chris as the followup. >> if Dylan turns it down, Mr. Boops can make that phone call and then goes to finance committee to >> negotiate. >> Motion from Jessica. Do I have a second? >> I'll second that. >> A second from Katie Marcus. Ready? >> Yep. >> Just making sure you keep that. >> Yep. >> Uh any discussion? Any discussion? All those in favor say I. >> I. >> All those opposed, same sign. >> I just not ready to vote yet. Angel, you're a no then. >> I'm No, I'm not. You or nay? I'm just like ready to >> vote. We're abstaining. >> I know. >> Well,

it just stays here for discussion. >> So, I'm going to I'm going to pull. Kyle, >> you want to vote? >> Yes or no? Do you have to vote? >> Oh. Are were you and I the first time or were you on? >> I'm kind of like Angel. I'm still on the fence deciding. >> Keep talking about it then. >> So that's discussion. >> Yeah. >> But >> yeah, >> but we've called for the vote. So you have to vote. >> Then I'm a no right at the moment. I was >> wait but can we can we revote later? That's what I don't understand. >> Yes, of course you can. >> Okay. >> This is on the motion that's on the table. When we called for discussion, nobody wanted to discuss and we've called for

the vote. That means you have to vote. >> Now you can vote no and someone can redo the motion. >> Jessica, you're a yes. >> Yes. >> Katie, >> no. >> Katie, >> yes. >> Angel, no. >> So, the motion fails. >> Okay. >> What more? What? What more? I just want the teachers to know I really do respect and there was good things on both of them is why I'm I'm having a hard time. >> Absolutely. I'm >> I just and and I don't the the the longevity thing keeps getting brought up and I just have a really hard time because I I need to know why we haven't been able to keep anyone. Why we can't keep a superintendent. Why we can't keep a middle school or elementary principal. It can't be that

all of the last six applicants were that bad of people that they like couldn't just last. What is the common denominator?
