013started to see the information from our panorama surveys our sel surveys is we really needed to step in and help support our students and so we looked at ways that we could create leaders in our building and so what you will see tonight is our amazing sixth grade students that are part of these different clubs how they have impacted the community and how these clubs have had an impact on them and so we are excited to share this information and i'm going to say to all of our students here and staff i'm so proud of you and all that you've accomplished this year and thank you for being here tonight so time to hear the amazing things that are happening [Applause] good evening dr mooney and members of the board we are so excited to
014be here with you tonight to present some exciting things that are happening at emis at the beginning of the school year dr mooney presented on an idea of rigor and relationships we knew this year was building relationships were not only important but essential due to the fact that our students were becoming were coming into our building regularly which is something they haven't done in quite some time due to to the pandemic we wanted our students to feel safe when they walked through the double doors at emis but we also wanted them to know that they were loved and they had supporting adults in our building that were rooting for them and their successes so this year at emis we wanted to ensure that we look as many look at as many opportunities as possible to
015not only build relationships with our students but also work hard to push them to the best versions of themselves while fostering great leaders we took time to think long and hard about what this might look like and the and one of those ideas we have was to create leadership groups for our sixth graders we decided to create three different leadership groups which include soar guys and ties and girls and pearls all three of these groups focus on the idea of leadership we also wanted to give our students the chance not only to build relationships with some of the staff in our student in our building but also with one another soar team is built on the idea of students who are great leaders inside and outside of our building these students have also been given
016the opportunity to participate in community service events for our school and our community guys and ties is a leader leadership mentor group which was created to help foster leadership but we also wanted to make sure that we worked with these students to foster confidence as well as the idea of our young men supporting other young men to be the best of the the best they can be our students in this group are provided with a button down shirt which you've seen some of our guys wearing a tie that they wear throughout the school day every other friday as a way to not only dress the part but represent the guides and ties in this program our girls in pearls leadership group is our young lady's version of guys and ties in this group our sixth
017grade girls work on what it means to exemplify good character leadership skills as well as the idea of young ladies supporting one another to be their best authentic selves our ladies are also given purple girls and pearls t-shirts and a string of pearls to wear on fridays to represent their group in all of these groups ms tidwell mr oral ms charlotte and i check in with these students regularly to ensure that they are meeting their academic behavior and personal goals throughout the year we also want our students to know that they have support and not only their successes but also when they face challenges we have told our leadership students throughout this year that if they were to take two ideas away from this experience that we want them to remember that they have staff
018at emis that love and support them but also that they are allowed to make mistakes we tell them that we don't ever expect perfection but we expect them to try their best and if on any given day that they were not able to give their best that they would be we would be there to help them learn and to grow from those mistakes we tell them that from the that growth from those mistakes helps to foster exceptional leaders all this in mind we have a few students that would like to speak with you tonight about their experiences in these groups and how it has impacted them this year so first we have three students from soar that are going to speak first [Applause] hello my name is amir this is katana in savannah and we
019are members of the soar team sora stands for safety ownership acceptance and respect sort is also a leadership group where we not only focus on leadership but community service events within our school some of the events we have had this year include the emis christmas toy drive this drive supports emis and children in need throughout our community for christmas we asked the emis students to bring in new or gently used toys and to be donated to the christian mission as a soar team we not only helped to collect the items each day but we also are in charge of counting the organization the items we are excited to see that we have collected 1 307 items for children for the for christmas [Applause] hi i'm savannah and we have also decided it would be helpful
020for store to sponsor emis food drive all proceeds of the food drive would go to the feed and see program during the week of the food drive so our team collected items each day from every classroom we would also unload the items and organize them based on what kinds of foods that arrived we were able to help with the feed and see volunteers to load the feed in c van the volunteers from feed and sea then told us that we had raised enough items to feed the community members that came to phoenicia facility for a little over a month needless to say we were able to help the community and we're happy about that [Applause] i'm katana sewer also is in charge of our emis sunshine community the soar sunshine community is something that we
021do every month as a way to show our teachers and staff members how much we appreciate them we usually load up carts with fun goodies or we set up things in the pd room for teachers to enjoy during their lunch break we also serve treats such as coffee and mini pies for the month of november cookies and cocoa for the month of december cupcakes for january and february say patterns day cookies cupcakes and soda for march we also help out teachers and staff with different tasks throughout the school day if needed the last drive we thought might be helpful because it's not only helps the humans in our community but also our community pets this month we thought it will be fun to sponsor a penny award for pets the idea is that students from
022mis will bring pennies which count as classroom points the students are also encouraged to bring quarters nickels and dimes to play in other class buckets to keep their class other classes from winning all silver coins are considered negative points at the end the winning class will receive a snow cone party and all coins will be collected by store and donated to the local animal rescue for food and other necessarities like beds and toys this is my impact statement this year soar has helped me become a better leader because in so armenians we talk about leadership qualities and what makes someone a good leader i have used these leadership skills to vet to develop new friendships with students i wouldn't normally speak to i have learned that i am example for other students which means i'm
023not i'm not only have to be respectful but also kind it is important to me that i am also an example for fourth and fifth grade students because they are potential sore leaders so i want to make sure that i am being positive a positive leader leader for those students as well most importantly i have learned that it's important to think before i act for example when i see others others not doing what they shouldn't i try to step in to make sure they are making the right choices i also try my best to think before i act so i am making a positive choice for myself [Applause] sora's helped me so much especially with being a leader and getting my grades up it has been helpful to me because miss tidwell comes to check
024in with me and make sure that all of my work is done and all of my grades are up and ready for next year for example i've been able to raise my grade in ela social studies math this is this has also motivated me to become because i have to do all my work completed by the end of the week to be able to participate in all the fun events for soar and i really look forward to being able to participate during the week i feel like i feel like this has helped me me to prepare me for the leadership opportunities offered in middle school and i'm really looking forward to being a future leader in middle school [Applause] sora has helped me with socializing more with people and making new friends because i didn't
025know many of the 6th graders or the 6th grade teachers and now i know almost all the 6th grade students and teachers and i have learned that not only should i show the teacher as much respect as they show me i should show more respect because they are taking time out of their day to help me learn and that i know that soar has helped me with school and in my personal life and that's just some of the things that sora has done to help me soar has done a lot more for a lot of other people [Applause] and now we hear from girls and pearls hi my name is mariah and this is elena we participate in the girls and pearls leadership group at emis as ms allen smith mentioned girls and pearls is
026a leadership group to help us become our better leaders and also help us with confidence self-esteem and important life skills usually we meet once every other week for about 45 minutes and go over our lesson or activity for the day this year girls and pearls we are given the opportunity to explore our future dreams and passions by creating a magazine cover to represent what we do and who we hope to be when we grow up we've also taken the time to learn about the importance of being great leaders in our building and coming up with ideas as a group we took those ideas and created a banner to illustrate our thoughts and put it in one of the hallways at emis in our girls and pearls meetings we have also discussed the importance of teamwork
027as a way to practice our teamwork skills ms allen and miss charlotte have divided us into two teams which we had to work together to bake brownies they had given us the ingredients and the recipe but as a team we had to work together to follow the directions on how to make the brownies this was definitely a challenge because not only we had to figure out how to communicate with one another but also we had to assign who was helping with each step the rest in the recipe recipe process it also was difficult but we also had a lot of fun [Applause] at the moment ms smith and ms charlotte are helping us learn about the idea of proper etiquette and as well as we practicing those skills we have learned that there is a
028time and place for specific actions and behaviors we have learned how to make proper introduction with adults for example how we introduce our parents to miss predictson might look a little different than how we would introduce our best friend to our parents we have discussed and practiced proper communication skills and how our conversation might look different if we were at home with our parents versus being at a job interview with the boss we are also learning how about the importance of proper table manners and how it might be more laid back at our kitchen table at home versus being out to dinner at a restaurant currently we are practicing specific skills relating to table etiquette and how we are going to use those skills and lunch on held at school where we are going to
029given the opportunity put in action on what we've learned in our girls and pearls meeting [Applause] and girls and pearls i have fun doing activities like making brownies role-playing scenarios and learning about ways to help me become a better leader this group has helped me keep to keep me motivated in class because i have to have all of my work completed for the day before i can participate in fun activities and this also helps me keep me focused since i stayed focused and complete my work some of my grades and class have actually improved by 10 points which makes me feel happy and proud i have enjoyed participating in girls and pearls this year and plan to take the skills i've learned from this group to middle school with me next year [Applause] girls and
030pearls has been a huge part of my school life it is such a loving and accepting community it has changed me as a person it makes me feel like i can take on the world i have made so many new friends and a lot of them are like family at this point i believe that things like soar and girls and pearls can change future generations my leader miss allen is a part of the reason i am who i am today and she has no clue how much she has made an impact on me and i and i love each of these girls in the group like family the things that we have learned i will keep for me then longer than a lot of you know this group teaches an important lesson like how to
031act like a lady but also how to be a good person every day in this group i learned something new i am so proud to be rep here representing girls and pearls [Applause] and now we hear from guys and ties [Applause] hello my name is daniel guys and ties guys and ties is a mentoring and leadership group we go to mrs tidwell's room on fridays to get our shirts and ties then go back during lunch for our meetings then gr then group the group is is more and is important to me because i get to see all my friends from past years and meet new people things i have learned in guys and ties is to be more of a leader and role model to the kids that are going to be in sixth grade
032next year one way is i have learned self-control with others i have also learned leadership qualities [Applause] during guys and ties i have learned to be responsible one thing that has really stood out is when we met chris from unc charlotte he is a he is a quarterback he taught me never to give up like when miss t i like when miss tidwell shares in inspirational videos and quotes [Applause] hey my hey my name is drew and i am a part of guys and ties guys and ties focuses on developing young men into tomorrow's leaders we work on setting goals and making not only us better as a person but also the people around us some of the goals i have said this year were being a leader not only in school but out of
033school too i've achieved this goal by doing extra stuff like going to walmart and the buggies that aren't in the buggy return get put back by me i live close to the neighborhood walmart so it's easy for me to get there i don't want any cars running into the into buggies or the buggies getting damaged and them having to buy new ones godzing ties has helped me develop conflict resolution strategy i was on i was in a fight online with my friend because we were getting mad at each other when we got killed in the game and kept blaming it on each other after i joined garden ties i figured out how to solve this and every time we died in the game i would just say good game or gg and now we have
034became better friends one last thing i want to add is guys and ties is a great program for leadership and a great group for solving problems in your life and if you get the chance to join it make sure that you do [Applause] this evening you've heard several students present soar girls and pearls and guys and ties we would like to extend our thanks to our students staff parents volunteers and district for your support we believe fostering relationships is the key to building a successful student when students are presented with goals life lessons and leadership positions they develop purpose and accountability we believe these are just a few characteristics that lead to academic improvement while at school and you can see we have wonderful students and we love them all thank you guys [Applause] so
035i want to do something real quick this is not that if anybody that's left with a percussion group if y'all could come up on stage board we want to get a picture this has been a fantastic beginning to this meeting let's give everybody a round of applause so percussion group if y'all come back up on stage and the guys and ties and the sore and the girls and pearls if y'all come up here let's get the board right here and y'all get around the board and let's get a big picture so parents get your phones ready if you want to take a picture everybody right here you go it's going to line up right here in front of the board yeah might have to have some on that end go down on that in a
036little bit there you go all right mr clean you need to tell everybody what to do yeah come right here does this look good mclean fight on three everybody say boogers one two three boogers everybody keeps monitoring lots of phones out so ms pratt dixon thank you very much for all the work that your school is doing and all the staff members that are here tonight this was this was amazing this was awesome and thank you boys and girls young men and young ladies uh for being awesome role models and examples [Applause] [Music] [Applause] stage lift thank you scotland that was awesome as we get ready to come back to order i will tell our friends at the middle school and the high school you better get ready cause good things are coming thanks again
037for being with us our friends from emis this evening our students and our staff members uh good things are happening out there and we appreciate you being with us this evening as we move along in this evening's agenda i would remind everyone that our next regularly scheduled meeting of the board is may 10th but as we move later in the agenda you may find opportunities for additional work sessions and other activities pursuant to the superintendent search process process and we'll talk about that a little more as we get to it moving on in the agenda dr mooney i think it's time for staff reports yes we'll begin with a construction report from dr royal good evening mr hyatt dr mooney members of the board for my construction updates tonight first i bring you updates from
038both parkview and south if you drive by both campuses you continue to see with the warmer weather the spring weather the masonry and block work continue on the gymatoriums at both of those sites we will start seeing the concrete floors being poured at parkview for the gym and the stage area starting in the next few weeks concrete will hopefully be poured near the end of may in the same areas for south roughly a month behind but if you've driven by south is doing a tremendous job catching up as far as those walls being erected by gates construction walls are also being erected in the kitchen at south and they will be ready to pour the new epoxy floor there in the next few weeks the kitchen at parkview has been painted ceiling tiles have been
039replaced and i met over there this afternoon with kim mccall we are in the process of receiving the new cooking equipment and all the furniture for that kitchen and dining area there's a couple more drops that they need to put in from an electrical standpoint and that kitchen at parkview is well on its way to being reopened in the very near future salmon burke middle school had concrete slabs poured last week in the gym and athletic wings so the auxiliary gym the main gym the athletic entrance as well as the locker room area at salmonburg now has concrete floors masons are on site the walls are starting to go up in the same athletic area and they're continuing to work down towards the cafeteria as well as the academic wings the work that continues there
040throughout the floor plan is our underground piping and conduit and you're continuing to see the walls and the foundation coming up they'll pour concrete again the cafeteria space probably within the next two weeks site work also continues when you look at the campus starting to see the athletic fields really come to fruition the tennis courts the driveway so again a lot of exciting work happening out there on reinhardt road and lastly i have a couple athletic updates as you know with spring brings a lot of activities from the athletic world both at mooresville middle school and mooresville high school that also brings challenges when it comes to weather so we we do like the rain when it washes the pollen down but does make scheduling sometimes a little bit difficult the middle school athletic programs

047the january board meeting i provided information about letters the purpose and the intended outcomes and letters is the acronym for language essentials for teachers of reading and spelling and it is an instructional set of courses that will provide teachers with the skills needed to master fundamentals of reading instruction we are currently in cohort 3 for summer so as we prepare for this journey we asked our office of early learning consultant from dpi to provide a brief training and overview for our principals reading specialists and instructional coaches last week the purpose was to make sure our leaders had a better understanding of what to expect so they can effectively assist our teachers when they begin their journey it has been recommended that principals reading specialists and coaches begin earlier than teachers so they can anticipate questions
048and answer and address concerns therefore our school leaders our elementary curriculum coordinator and myself we do plan to begin this course work in the summer so we can help our teachers to be successful yesterday we did meet with our teacher leaders that went across the district to provide them with the same overview of letters to answer questions and give them access to a recorded cohort one teacher panel that dpi sponsored throughout the state and the teachers it will give them the opportunity and a chance to hear from other educators in cohort one who discuss tricks and tips and strategies to be successful last month our principals and their school improvement chairs had the opportunity to attend two nc star training sessions these training sessions were facilitated by dpi nc star reps who reviewed the school
049improvement planning process as you know school improvement planning is a continuous cycle and we should continuously review on a regular basis we want to make sure that our schools are proficient in the nc star platform based on the work that our schools have already done with their school improvement plans our dpi consultants they praised our school as well all of our schools on the quality of plans submitted so a big shout out to our principals for a job well done last but not least our sixth grade teacher leaders met to finalize gateway requirements and they chose to focus on research writing a digital product and oral presentation mis emis moa topics will be ancient civilizations emis gateway dates are april 21st and april 22nd at nine o'clock am mis gateway dates are april 25th and

052and and look to move forward with that for the at the secondary level as well to visit some of those classrooms as well right and as our principals will say you are invited at any time okay be careful what you asked you very much seriously we did enjoy our time spent with in our school next on the agenda dr mooney student services report yes dr albert good evening dr mooney mr hyatt members of the board so each year the north carolina department of public instruction monitors each public school unit regarding improving educational results and functional outcomes for all children with disabilities and ensuring that the public agencies meet those requirements some of the indicators that they do monitor are in suspensions of students with disabilities disproportionality child find in 90 day timelines early childhood transition
053into preschool and secondary transition planning and i am pleased to report that our ec department met all the requirements for the 1920 school year and just as a note every every time that the dpi monitors us the data is two years in arrears so it would be very interesting to see what happens moving forward but i am pleased to reporter that we met all the requirements for the 1920 school year on april 7th we had our virtual resource and transition fair and we had about 20 people attend online guest speakers included nancy popkin from the autism society stephanie terbifield from vocational rehab and kelly butner from abound health we are planning a fall conference so that we can finally have all our vendors and parents interact in person and they can actu access the resources
054throughout the school year many years ago we did a fall fair and a spring fair and that the fall fair was very successful so we're very excited to be able to to provide that again hopefully this fall and finally as as you all know this is a very busy time of year for students as they prepare academically and socially to graduate to prepare for some summer opportunities or just to plan to transition to a new school our ec staff and student services teams have been busy preparing and meeting with students small groups as they prepare for the end of the school year and that concludes my report members of the board you've heard the report do you have questions anytime outsiders come and whether they're auditing our financial records or our ec records and they
055leave with smiles it's your fault and thank you because that's a that's a a tough thing to do and we appreciate your efforts on our behalf thank you and speaking of business services report dr mooney yes davis dr mooney mr hyatt members of the board so it's hard to believe that it is now time to start shifting focus and planning for the next fiscal year within the past week the state released information on estimated average daily membership numbers for fiscal and position allotment planning purposes with that in mind certain members of the executive team will participate in upcoming allotment conferences with each school principal these conferences will begin in may and provide a platform for school leadership to discuss personnel and program needs also in looking ahead finance has been collaborating with the departmental leadership
056to plan for the upcoming summer events with various programs and their corresponding legislative requirements budget and payroll planning although complex will play a big part to ensure compliance a special thanks goes out to dr pratt dr royal dr albert and their teams for all the assistance thus far and mr hyatt that concludes my report any questions for ms davis i know that there's some consideration at the state level of changing how positions are allotted what i understand is going from average daily membership to basically time served um yeah full time yeah have we had an opportunity to kind of look at how that would impact us um not really it's really brand new information dr medlock at is currently at the paint conference since she has been receiving updates on that and sharing information that's
057just then been provided to her so we really haven't had time it's it's really in talks right now so until the legislators move towards that direction you know we don't really know what to expect but that is definitely something that we're going to be considering if there's some way that we can try to get the handle on that so that if it looks like it's going to adversely affect schools we would have the information to lobby our legislators yeah absolutely and i think that the um there's still a lot of uncertainty as to how they would even roll that out okay um so the plan's kind of out there but the logistics um yeah have devils always in the details yeah yes dr marshall we will closely monitor that and i know that other groups
058you know that are advocates for you know the public school units will be looking at that from the association of school educators i mean uh school administrators and that kind of thing catherine joyce and those groups are keeping a close eye on that okay as well thank you and since we heard dr medlock is at a conference is someone bringing her report or whatever we're just going to go right to ms mclean let's move right ahead to the public communications report ms mclean good evening dr mooney mr hyatt members of the board i'm going to start with the easy one we have our coven 19 numbers we have right now one positive and that is a staff member moving on [Laughter] we are as you know um going to be holding what was a picnic
059in the park it is now going to be picnic in the stadium that will be on the 28th of april we currently have 804 parents and students who have signed up to attend um so as i said we're moving that from the park to coach joe pop stadium at mooresville high school i think we're moving to vienna sausages is that right that may take the numbers down a little bit no no we're gonna have good hot dogs please continue ms mclean i will um send out on monday or tuesday just asking everyone who has rsvp yes that if they have changed their mind to they will have the opportunity to go back in and switch that to no just so we don't have too much food waste if you need some extra cooks just holler
060thank you we may can't wait to see that um but we're excited about it we're hoping for good weather so as you know because you were there but last night we had nathan harmon with your life speaks he was at mooresville high school on monday and mooresville middle school today but then yesterday evening we held our community event here in the pack we want to thank those who took the time to attend this event that our district offered we've received excellent positive feedback from both students as well as the parents and community members who attended last night we are starting to pilot the moorsville motivators that will begin wednesday april 20th when we come back from this mini break over the easter holiday we held two training sessions last friday and had good attendance with
06122 volunteers attending i have an additional six individuals on my calendar to train over the next week i'm also reaching out to individuals who use the interest form but have not completed their background checks scheduled a training or both to see if they are still interested i quickly figured out that there's going to be a much easier way to actually do all of the scheduling so i'm decided i'm going to move towards sign up genius and that first lineup genius went out today i met with mentor n.c and mr atreus goode he's the director of mentor nc which is the state branch of the national mentoring resource center this program falls under the office of juvenile justice and delete delinquency prevention i applied for technical assistance in setting up a mentoring program that will use
062best practices and we qualified for the full 50 hours of technical training and that will be free of charge for us and we can potentially apply and qualify for an additional 50 hours after october 1st i will be meeting with atreus tomorrow afternoon to discuss next steps i'm excited to see how they can assist mgsd with building a sustainable community-wide mentoring program as well as help us potentially partner a mentoring program with other local organizations and agencies we had our regional nurse consultation visit camera show did a site visit on april 6th that is our regional nurse consultant and we received excellent feedback and high marks our school nurse to student ratio is one to 836 students this does not include the three temporary nurses we have for this year with covid um this is
063slightly better than the state average of one to eight hundred and ninety um mgsd has 9 out of the 10 recommended school health policies the only one we are missing is a do not attempt resuscitation policy many districts do not have this policy at this time but it is strongly recommended and moving forward they want schools to adopt one so we've reached out to ncsba for examples and plan on bringing you a policy for consideration at the mayor june meeting and i already went over our one covid number so are there any questions just to clarify you said a policy do not attempt resuscitation would be one of our school health we had all out of ten we had nine which was they were very impressed with but they said if we might want to
064consider that it will be up to us and you whether or not we honor dna ours or not as school as a school we do not have to honor dnars so that's something that we're looking at we're getting feedback from some other districts so just so that we know a dnar do not attempt resuscitation so basically it's up to the school board to determine based on our policy if someone in our school has a do not do not resuscitate order then we do not have to honor that we can attempt resuscitation regardless if it happens on our campus because we might not know that they don't have a do not resuscitate and so that kind of removes us from liability is that correct right well it removes us more from liability because as schools even
065though our we have school nurses we're not considered a medical so like one of the one of the policies that i'm looking at is where what you can do is have a dna r on file and when the ems gets there you hand it to them and they decide what to do we would go ahead and attempt any sort of resuscitation until they were arrived however but i would say well we will wait on guidance from the school boards association before we bring anything to the board having uh elderly relatives i'm familiar with the dnr for shall we say our more senior citizens but this first i've heard of it for students so please keep us advised as that process goes forward we will thank you mr mclean real quick um i just want to
066say uh on the behalf of last night event um talking to mr brown i can't remember the exact number but he said that a lot of students attended could mr brown you mind sharing that number how many students you said attended the set in session for students or how many opted out yeah so i just want you to you know that's big for the community as we are even though a lot of the community didn't show last night getting our students involved and having those extra curriculum activities is actually paying off so um that's how about the middle school how did that look today all of them okay thank you guys next on the agenda dr mooney is the superintendent's report yes mr hyde members of the board very briefly as you've heard there are
067lots of activities and preparations being made across the district uh for the end of the school year this is always a very exciting and busy time of the year and so i know your calendars were are if they're not yet will be full of all these events at the different schools from from spring concerts to graduation activities to honor um honor ceremonies all those kinds of things that are going on so we encourage you to be um at as many of those as as you would like i know that the um all of our all of our kids and i would probably say adults too get very excited about this time of the year and and but it's with with good calls and so with that being said i will um assure you that we
068will remain focused and as dr larussa i see is out there we're not counting down the days but we're making every day count between now and the end of the um the school year um and that concludes my report mr thank you dr mooney you talked about several things i was going to talk about so i won't repeat them i would remind board members that in your packet is a plethora of possibilities for you to participate in school events over the next few weeks as has been said already folks in the building like to see us come and we very much like to see and participate in these activities so do make yourself available as you can next on the agenda is an opportunity for us to hear from a representative from the north carolina
069school board association those of you that were with us last month we did come into an agreement with the school board association to guide us through the search for a new superintendent so sam thorpe is here he's coming to the podium representing the school board association he has some information to bring to us and some decisions that we need to make during the course of his presentation so mr thorpe welcome to mooresville thank you and good evening board members i appreciate you having me here tonight i know you all are busy getting ready for the end of the school year um i am very excited and our team at ncsba is really excited to work with you on your superintendent search there are a number of documents like your board chair alluded to we call
070them initial documents that we need you the board's feedback on input on and then ultimate vote and approval of in order to officially get your uh search started get the application live the vacancy posted etc um i understand that you have hard copies of those in front of you right now okay yes uh so if we could just walk through them one at a time starting with the timelines there are two sample timelines and the primary material difference between the two is timing the one on the back sample timeline two is a little tighter it's a little quicker it projects a september one uh employment start date whereas it's an october one start date on the sample one timeline just so you know the onl and i mentioned this in the memo but in case
071you missed it the only fixed date on the timeline is the application deadline we can move any of these other dates around and oftentimes do for various reasons is there any discussion or members of the board you received in your packet as mr thorpe said copies of all these documents and i think it'd be pertinent as we we move through to review them and approve them as we go we saw some of these things last month when the other rep was with us is there any discussion pertinent to the timeline documents that you've been given just for clarification yes ma'am with the application deadline yes ma'am hypothetically if we were to choose the earlier deadline and then go through the interview process could we then decide to reopen applications is there a point at which
072you can reopen applications yes ma'am okay there's there's flexibility we've had unique circumstances arise where we've needed to to reopen it or we've needed to adjust the timeline yeah it's it's really just so there's a date and time search right where the applicants know they have to have stuff in so that we can get the materials to you if we wait too long or that's too fungible other questions regarding the timeline do we need we need to go ahead and choose one correct uh we need to go ahead and choose one correct is there a recommendation i guess we need to have a formal motion second and approval i see i mean if there's questions you're welcome that was a perfectly reasonable question you know but i don't want to belabor the point if there
073are no further questions we need to move along is there no further questions concerning the timeline i mean there's a two-week difference in the deadline application deadlines but a month difference in right about yeah and we can always try to move that start date up okay it's just you never know what the contract assuming someone has a contract what it's going to say and and sort of how they're going to be in your experience i mean the short do you see one being more beneficial than the other we don't draw them up to the ex to make one less advantageous so they're both perfectly sufficient it really just depends on y'all's timing some feel really strongly about getting as close to the beginning of the school year as possible you know it sounds like y'all
074are going to have a really stable interim and so there might not need to be a push for a september one uh start date but that it's really up to y'all so basically we could we could pick the one with the application deadline at june 6 but end up having the employment to begin on september 1st you sure could spot doesn't yeah so it doesn't really i mean like you said those are all fluid and work around that's our schedule yes sir yes sir but the important thing is once we advertise a due date for applications it behooves us to honor that deadline right and i think what everyone's talking about is maybe changing these these end but the other things can can go as as things flow that's right we've been told by leadership
075at the association that looking across the world at potential candidates the bench is not deep so there are interested folks out there and we i think would be an attractive uh destination for some folks and as i i told the person last month we only need one but we need the right one and we're not in position to settle just to have somebody take that chair we want a good one to lead us forward and i know i'm preaching to the choir you know that so i'm gonna stop talking and i would point out that um sample timeline two the week um for initial interviews to select finalists is the week that we will all be um at summer conference but you said we could move some of those we can't that's right i'll be
076at carolina beach too so i would love to move that right yeah and for those in the room we're not going to the beach to se to eat shrimp and lay in the sun it's the annual meeting of the association in which we take renewal courses during that time which we are legislatively required to do and the board brings those appropriate training courses to us it just happens to be in a room close to the shore and uh can't see the world you can't from where we sit you can't see the water smell it but you can't see it other questions pursuant to the timeline i move i move that uh we do may 23rd which is which one which is sample time earlier the earlier date earlier deadline date which timeline timeline yeah there's
077a motion on the floor to use timeline number two which has an application deadline of may the 23rd for prospective superintendents is there a second to that motion second motion and second for what i'm calling sample timeline number two any further discussion hearing none all in favor of sample timeline number two indicate with an eye any opposed it is approved unanimously mr thorpe please continue okay the next document is the vacancy announcements um we pulled some of this is is form stock information which starts at about three quarters down the page on who should apply and some of those those characteristics uh on the back as well as applying online um the district and community specific information is in those top three paragraphs the first one that's shaded then the next one that's about the
078school system and the next one about the community we pull all of that information from publicly available sources mostly online but we're happy to to change it we really just want to give a general idea of the district as well as the community it is our understanding that that folks who apply will investigate us using other opportunities whether it's through the internet or word of mouth or whatever so we're not trying to hide our warts from anybody but uh i think we're a well-known entity in the education field in north carolina so yes sir uh members are there any feelings about the wording of these of this particular document should we look at it further or is it okay to go with it as it is in reading the first paragraph if there's a change
079to the structure of the schools that we offer um if we have something now and we might not have it later online yeah i didn't know whether or not to put that in there i thought it was unique that you offered it so i so i put in there but i can take that out i don't should i do that i don't know how to answer that question okay we'll know at the end of the month oh wow okay um it's it's an extra sentence we can just take it out if that would be helpful i mean you can find that online that you offer it right now certainly in a month you could find if it since we are pushed against the timeline crunch here uh i would suggest taking it out and if
080someone investigates it they will see what we're doing as time goes down the road is that okay with everyone yeah remove that sentence sure i've done that any other suggestions before we pass muster on this particular document hearing no further questions is there a motion to approve with a minor correction this document which describes our school system to prospective superintendents so moved second motion and second all in favor aye any opposed it is approved unanimously mr thorpe please continue yes sir so next up is a list of places where you can advertise the vacancy that you just approved so there are as you can see a number of unpaid free places that you can advertise and then one at the top and then on the back are all examples of places where there's a cost
081associated with advertising it is entirely up to you the extent to which if at all you want to pay to advertise the vacancy the only place that folks typically pay to advertise with any kind of regularity is the one at the top on page one the american association of school administrators and and folks typically do 30 days of that but again it's really up to you whether or not you want to target any of those paid advertising uh places on the back members of the board you've seen the handout and heard the comments regarding opportunities to advertise our vacancy any comments from you regarding this process do most do most uh candidates use that service or how how favorable is that service that 30-day trial i would say that as a superintendent most sitting superintendents
082are going to be members of double agenda and so from the the different emails that i get on a regular basis from double a essay i would suggest that that we look at that 30-day posting that's what candidates have told us and that's why we recommend it to you and that means if we were going to spend some money we would spend some money on that one and maybe not spend some money on the ones on second page it's up to y'all whether or not you do the ones on the second page what we've found from candidates is that it's that top one that they look for and of course all the free ones we will take advantage of those opportunities as well absolutely yes sir okay members of the board a recommendation to proceed
083in 30 days 30 days there's a motion on the floor to approve the advertising options on page one including the paid one for 30 days for the american association of school administrators is there a second second i hear a motion in a second all in favor aye any opposed carries unanimously mr thorpe please continue okay so uh next document is the application um this is how it would print out and if you'll turn to pages 9 and 10 that's where we would put district specific questions and ask for some district specific responses uh from the applicants so what we typically recommend on page nine there are ten uh short answer essay questions and we ask that you pick somewhere between three and five depending on how strongly the board feels about some of those questions
084any more than five and you believe it or not these application materials can become really cumbersome to review so so we need to choose between three and five of these at this point yes sir okay ladies and gentlemen we've had a chance to look at these i didn't know we had to choose three out of five three or five so uh are we choosing only from page nine correct on page nine so right on page nine we need three to five on the next page we'll pick two to three feel free to shout out some number one i hear i hear a motion for number one number six five number five number eight that's four number three personnel relations with administrators okay i show one three five six and eight everybody sit okay with those
085as i'm thinking about this i mean the application will serve in some ways as a weeding tool certainly and so um it doesn't mean that we can't ask questions during interviews about these things so um that's right it it it might be in our best interest to um you know kind of go to some of the basic kinds of questions that if someone can't answer those satisfactorily correct you know it's that's a starting point yeah it's a starting point yeah so you said one three five six and eight yes that's the ones i have one three five six and eight is everyone okay with those that gives us one two three four five that's perfect i'm not hearing anything is there a motion to approve those specific questions to be included in the application form
086so moved second all in favor all right any opposed then we have our five questions mr thorpe perspective if you'll just turn to page 10 there are six long-ended uh long-form essays and we we recommend only picking two or three of these again it's a it's a screening tool so you don't have to feel like you're limited to just those two or three five excuse me five number five you said two or three yes ma'am two okay i like number six talking about leadership style but i'm not that's not a hill i'm gonna die on but toss that out there that would be three number two number five and number six i don't know two or three i don't know it was how's the board feel but i'm sorry i can't hear you either two
087or three of a choice between two or three one deals with uh board and superintendent working together number three talks about student achievement which seems to be job one can we i mean the question how would you raise student achievement levels i want to know how have you we can we can change those words sure how have you or what have you done to raise the achievement levels am i hearing a movement away from two and toward three yes okay that move we uh except three five and six there's a motion on the floor to go with questions as possibly rewarded a little bit yep number three number five and number six is there a second second all in favor of these three questions indicate with an eye any any opposed then we have the
088three there again with the understanding we can ask some of these oh absolutely first of these days oh absolutely and you're going to ask about students right achievement we certainly about board superintendent relations yeah in the interviews probably question number one and number two uh so the last item uh involves the surveys we haven't uh i well i guess we did in effect approve with those two votes this yes sir okay the changes to nine and ten okay the rest okay uh we'll stay as excellent we'll go on then to the next item which again as mr thorpe says are the survey possibilities please continue yes um i assume jim explained to you that this is an optional uh part of our search process but one that a lot of that a lot of boards
089uh participate in to solicit feedback uh from the community and the staff on what types of characteristics what types of issues are really important to them and they would like for you to consider uh during the search process um there are two different versions of the online survey um survey one and survey two some boards feel really strongly about which one um obviously you're you're welcome to use either um and just keep in mind that there is an opportunity at the end of each survey for people to provide um open-ended responses and that's without with all of them that's that's correct and that's where sometimes you get quite a bit of pointed feedback correct from the community correct do you have you seen better responses off one or the other oh i would say that
090in the searches i've been on i've seen better responses to one uh survey number one but you know in every search there are folks that start a survey that don't finish it certainly and when you say survey number one that's both community survey number one and staff survey number one yes sir other questions concerning the potential survey opportunities we feel it's very important for our community and staff to let us know the characteristics that they would find favorable in a in a new leader and this is one way for them to tell us and it does provide some structured questions as well as open-ended opportunities to talk about any number of things the important thing is that you folks will collect all this data tabulate it put it together and send it to us so
091we don't have to shuffle a lot of paper we just get the results is that correct that's correct and we would also come to one of your regularly scheduled board meetings and present since it's all publicly available sure uh anonymous but not confidential correct so we would correct redact it for any confidential personnel information that's in the comments and then present it to the community as well as to the board um and actually at that board meeting we create a custom leadership profile it's basically an opportunity for you all to share with your staff and community what kinds of things you're looking for in a new superintendent as informed by the feedback that you've gotten and reviewed from your staffing and the results of the survey come directly to ns to y'all ncspa yes ma'am
092board members in reviewing both those surveys um personally i think i like survey number two um because it's asking you out of the list of things to kind of rate your five that are most important whereas on the other survey you have all the things and then it's either slightly moderately very and so you could have a lot that might be marked the same whereas on the the second format you kind of have to think a little bit more about okay these are important but what is the most important thing that i'm looking at so it requires a little bit more um thought and then not to say that all right well i got six or seven things that are very important to me you still have the the open ended where you could add
093some of those but that's something that you know something to think about other comments concerning the survey opportunities does this go live this goes live tomorrow as well that's the goal yeah i think we would have it up and share with your pio and get it up on your website and um pushed out to the various media outlets and stuff like that if there are no further questions does someone have a recommendation i i also like survey too um just because of the the format of the questioning based on the selection process can i take that mr brawley as a motion yes i would like to recommend survey too we have a motion on the floor to go with the survey packet number two is there a second second all in favor of using surveys
094under sample number two indicate with an i any opposed and survey number two is the winner and what else do you have mr thorpe fantastic well that uh concludes everything that i need from you to go ahead and get things started tomorrow you will hear from me at some point tomorrow uh once the the application is live i'll share with you survey links as well as with your board assistant your pio so they can get it where it needs to go and then for now as long as there aren't any questions that sort of concludes what i need when you say you're going to share with us that means all of us yes all five of us plus the other individuals that you talked about it's all publicly available okay does does the board attorney
095need to have these items as well i don't want him to feel left out would you like me to copy you on it okay sure absolutely any other questions for our representative from the school board's association beforehand how long will the survey stay open they will stay open so you approved timeline it's in the timeline sample timeline number two two two so they will be up from april 13th to april 29th and then i'll come on may 10th to present those survey results to you but we will share it with the board well in advance so you have a chance to read through all the comp you know i don't want you all to be seeing it for the first time and ms martinez would you be sure and include his visit on may 10th
096excellent and now you know where we are so [Laughter] i suppose we'll see you next month yes sir you will continue to be our contact and feel free to call me or email me in the meantime and very well individually very well thank you thank you any other questions for mr thorpe before he heads back to central north carolina safe travels safe travels to you and we'll see you thank you we'll hear from you soon and see you later yes thank you sir moving on with the established agenda and this too deals with our superintendent search process we talked last month that the timeline would probably extend into the fall and dr mooney has announced his decision to retire effective the end of june so that leaves us without leadership for a little while in
097closed session because this is a personnel matter we've discussed last month and again earlier this afternoon the necessity for an interim and while the interim is an important one to us the interim is just what it says it's a person who will be with us to provide leadership until the new superintendent is in place it is also customary as we said last month that the interim not be a candidate for the current or the soon-to-be vacancy we five discussed numerous opportunities and we have come forward with a recommendation at this point i would like to recommend to the board that we offer the interim superintendency to dr michael royal and i will open up the table for further discussions if necessary personally i would like to say i i totally agree um just looking at
098the relationships and leadership organization that i've seen throughout the district that dr roy has presented so i totally agree with that and agreed to the recommendation other comments ms pannell i'm excited um i look forward i think it'll be nice to have somebody step in that's been here while we go through this process so i was just going to add that i think it's really important if you can to find an internal candidate so there's not a learning curve dr royal has assumed numerous roles in this district and um and i think that planning coordinating getting school started for the whole district is really in your wheelhouse he is the most organized person that you'll find and he knows he's served in um operations as well so all the different pieces of the puzzle that
099you have to put together to start school and it's a lot you think that you know hey we do this every year it should be easy but there's a lot that goes into starting school and i know that he can handle it i also would like to say relatability so i'm good no i was just going to say that he is exemplified through his entire experience here in school district i mean from being at the at this being a math teacher to being an ap being a principal being here when all this was being constructed the chaos embracing the chaos the construction that's ongoing now over the next year and a half he's exemplified what it is to be a true leader in our community and most importantly in our school district and i couldn't
100be uh happier and prouder than to have him as the as the interim i can only say i totally agree with everything i've heard uh we we had this same conversation in closed session a couple of times as an administrator he knows what to do and how to do it we all know recently he's a graduate of the superintendent's academy that's probably not the word for it but the the future superintendents academy uh and we may have other conversations down the road but for right now uh i would like to make the motion that uh dr michael royal be our interim superintendent during this next period of time second there's a motion and second on the floor any further conversation hearing none all in favor any opposed i hear none so it is unanimous dr
101royal welcome and [Applause] [Laughter] and we're not done we're not sarah we're not quite done with our agenda we've got some other business to do here i would just like to also say if i could uh go ahead um thank you sarah thank you ma'am we don't usually entertain comments from the floor but we'll take that one thank you mr brawley you had a comment yeah i would just like to say i i mean when it comes down to relatability and community relations um i think the process will be smoothing a smooth transition based on the fact of how we transition from you know interim to a new superintendent because i've been involved in the community conversations based on you know what you know what the expectations are and so i think this was smoothing
102out the you know transition so congratulations dr royal let's move along to some other business that we have to deal with next item on the agenda dr mooney consideration of school start and end times yes mr members of the board each year the board approves the starting end times for the upcoming school year normally when you approve the school calendar which we did a couple months ago this year we did not include the start and end times on the 2022-2023 school calendar because we were looking at the possibly the possibility of adjusting some of those times due to a couple of factors one was the increasing the need to increase the amount of time between start and end times between the different school bands so from between the the high school and the middle school
103and the start time of the intermediate schools and then the intermediate schools and the start time of the elementary schools in order to allow more time for our buses to complete their runs and arrive at their at their second or third destination schools on time at the beginning of the day and that dismissal another reason that we looked at adjusting the school times was to equalize the length of the instructional day at each school across the district to seven hours currently our k-6 schools are in session six hours and 45 minutes and our seven through 12 schools are in session for seven hours and so the proposed start times for the coming school year 2022 2023 you have there in your in your board packets would be for the high school middle school and nf
104woods to begin at 7 20 which would be 10 minutes earlier than they currently start their day would run until 2 20 which is seven hours uh moore's intermediate and east moore's intermediate would begin their day at eight o'clock and end their day at three o'clock that would be 15 minutes earlier than they currently um start and they would end at the same time that would give them a seven hour instructional day and then for our three elementary schools parkview rocky river and south to begin school at 8 40 which is five minutes earlier and end the day at 3 40 which is 10 minutes later that would give them seven hours of instructional time and i do want you to know that that we realize as we've been going through these and um and
105discussing these start and end times and and getting feedback from the calendar committee and the calendar committee getting feedback from from the staff that we understand that this will cause um you know this is a decision that impacts everyone in the district from the the staff to the kids to the parents and so we don't take that uh you know adjustments like this lightly but we do think that this will be the to best serve that this would be the best option for morsel graded moving forward and it is sharing the the change in times between all the schools not just the the high school having to bear the the brunt of the the start time and the end time or the elementary school since they're on kind of both ends but this is shared
106um across all the all the different grade configurations members of the board you've heard the presentation you have questions for the superintendent so when we're looking at this new time for this year are we anticipating a change when the middle school opens as well um at this point uh no we're not anticipating um uh a change in in school times um but again that that will depend on on several things um i mean it's possible that that could happen but that would be based upon uh like numbers of drivers and things like that that we'd have to look at dr royal do you wanna have do you have anything to add to that uh nothing in particular but it would come down to ridership the once we redo the attendant zones you know how many
107fleets we would need for buses to cover all of a k-12 um so we can't make that determination definitively right now but i think we go into this with the goal of not making adjustments moving forward that this would be that this would hold us through the opening of the new school i know some some folks have asked because of lots of reasons why we start with the high school and not the little folks i was working in the district some years ago and we started one year with the elementaries first to allow our high school students to sleep a little extra so they would be alert when they came in a little later in the day it did not work because we had little chaps in the dark in the cold six o'clock in
108the morning beside the road waiting for buses and folks raised sand so that we tried that one time and it didn't work so what you see here is looking at safety and all aspects of what we do are there other questions or comments concerning this proposal i would just add that those of us who have been in the district for a while have been in the the educational field for a while we have to change start and stop times periodically it's just it happens and i would ask that we could we pay attention longitudinally so that any one change is never a lot but i don't want us to creep into you know okay the next time we change you know we start the yeah we move everything back another 10 minutes and all of
109a sudden in a 10-year span we have a 30-minute difference right be aware of those kinds of things and this is a goal like i think a lot of parents think about now the the end time is that let's just say if it's at 3 40. our buses are running late right now because of the distance they're having to go but ideally this change will help the buses to be at the school at 3 40 rather than them showing up 10 15 minutes later so they will get out of school get out of school faster we're thinking some people think about it wrong like it's automatically going to be running late but we are trying to stop the running lake part correct and you know and and currently we have 30 minutes between our times
110between middle i mean between high school and middle school and the intermediate schools and then 30 minutes later the elementary start and end and really by the time that you load the buses especially i mean when we started at the high school at at 2 35 or whatever time um when that bell rings the 30-minute clock starts right when that bell rings to when they need to be at the at the next school well realistically we can't load buses in 10 seconds you know especially with this many many riders and so you know the buses i think they do a very good job when they're pulling out eight you know eight minutes after the bail so it at 2 43 they're they're rolling off of you know rolling on the magnolia street from the from
111the annex but as as we all know if you've driven around town you can't really get anywhere in in morsel and back in 20 minutes right and um and so especially if you have to go out near highway 150 and so you know that that additional 10 minutes and you know i will say i know it's been a very difficult year with a lot of frustration on the on the part of parents and kids and staff members too but our transportation department has made multiple adjustments over the course of the year uh to try to improve things and as i look at you know what our what our pickup times are now and what our our last riders are getting off the bus now it is much better than it was in the first quarter
112of school and that is in no small part to uh to miss mooney and transportation and dr smith and and working with our administrators but you know and that in the in the course of that we you know we have had multiple um increased vacancies in the transportation department buses going down um and you know just a lot of things that are that are going on but they've made some adjustments which unfortunately having increased the rider times and the number of kids on our buses but it is something that we've that we've really had to to do and i will say you know this will be a you know something for um for dr royal and uh the new superintendent to really consider but looking at which kind of goes what you were saying mr
113hyatt about you know if we if we were to to follow more strictly or adhere more tightly to the state guidelines for stops um that is something that could uh that can make us a little bit more efficient time wise um kind of like you said mr the the the other side of that is is that there will be or that there is whenever we change stops or somebody has to walk the the state says that kids can walk up to a mile miss mooney is that to a bus stop yeah you know up to a mile i mean that's a that's a long way and you know right now we're walking if you know i would say the majority of our our kids are walking less than a tenth of a mile probably to
114their stops but that's something that that we could look at as well if if need be but but yeah i think this is going to be the best the best start and end times for the district for moving forward and there's a lot of neighborhoods that we can't get into with a bus simply because the width of the street and the parking on the street makes it impossible to navigate with a bus so we have to have loading points at certain times and hopefully as the economy begins to warm up a little bit the county can attract additional bus mechanics so we can get some buses returned to us that are in the shop for repairs and we get additional drivers that would help us as well so it's a it's a complex and complicated
115situation that you are very much aware of any further questions concerning these starting ending times hearing none is there a motion to approve so moved second there's a motion and a second to approve these new starting times for school year 2223 all in favor all opposed it is passed unanimously so we'll make those plans accordingly next item on the agenda is consideration of board policies ms davis is coming to the podium please share with us uh dr mooney mr hyatt members of the board the first set of policies are for approval um last month was the first read again these were policies that were presented by the north carolina school board association all except policy 4135 tuition for discretionary admissions which was modified due to the need to clearly define employees of marshall graduate school
116district members of the board you've had an opportunity to review these board policies we've had them for a little while you've heard the clarification from ms davis are there questions from ms davis concerning this group of board policies hearing no questions is there a motion to approve so moved second all in favor any opposed hearing none that group of board policies that approved unanimously ms davis and i see that you've got another group of policies to bring to us yes sir these are also from the north carolina school board association fall policy update um all these recommendations and these are for first reading and most if not all of these are current policies with minor adjustments based on legal recommendations from the association is that correct correct some do have more adjustments than others they
117are we're not in the technical corrections section but yes sir okay so you've got some homework members of the board we will come back and visit these next month ms davis thank you thank you dr mooney the next item on the agenda agenda is an opportunity for public comment and i think we've got a couple of folks signed up so i will call upon mr donaldson our board attorney to monitor this next section of the agenda thank you mr hyatt we do have two two folks signed up to uh speak tonight um you folks are both on the on the agenda to speak you um have spoken for so you know the know the rules but um you got three minutes i'll give you the one minute sign and um just no personal attacks on
118anybody no call anybody out it's not a question answer session just your time to present whatever you'd like to present to the board for them to hear and just use all good manners as you have done in the past and we'll all be fine so the first person on the list is kristin bellinger good evening dr mooney and board members i believe this country is in a spiritual bad battle as evidenced by recent current events a biological male winning a women's college swimming event a biological male being nominated as woman of the year a now nominated supreme court justice not being able to define what a woman is and even disney doing away with the term ladies and gentlemen and boys and girls at their parks so as not to offend anyone across our country
119we are seeing a generation of children being shown and taught that they can choose something other than their god-given gender it has even started to creep into our small town of mooresville i was recently shown a photo of a big hairy-legged high high school boy sitted sitting at his desk in a dress i also had a conversation with a fourth grader at mis where she stated that there was a boy in her class that thinks he's a girl and wants to be called a girl how do you explain this to a nine-year-old i believe this is a pivotal time for the future of mgsd as the search for a new superintendent begins mooresville is a small town with small town conservative values we have the benefit of being able to focus on our own small
120town and the students in it without worrying about being being part of a bigger board with multiple towns or big cities like charlotte while you go through the search for our new superintendent i'd like you to think about what direction you want mgsd to go in we need a morally strong superintendent who reflects the values of the people here in mooresville and one who's willing to take a strong stance on social issues so as not to go down the slippery slope of supporting gender dysphoria excuse me starting with upholding the mgsd dress code which states clothing and general appearance are not to cause a disturbance or interfere with the instructional program which i believe a buoyant address does being slack on small things will only lead to more gender dysphoria acceptance which will be to
121the detriment of our young girls when we start to bend then we start allowing boys to identify as girls in girls locker rooms or bathrooms or allowing boys to identify as girls to compete against girls and girls sports where do we draw the line i sincerely hope that the new superintendent that you choose will know thank you next is alan richter good evening dr moody's board i'm here tonight to express my concerns with the direction the school board has led this school district a standalone district with great schools and a great town has been falling and continues to fall we have a chance now to correct that with the hiring of a new leader this summer you've all heard me speak of these concerns in the past i have been outspoken with my disagreements and
122the current leadership this is soon to be in the past you as a board remain as elected officials you are responsible for the hiring of the past and now the future herein lies our concerns and our untrust we asked what what are you as a board looking for in the next superintendent are we going to continue down this road of lowering our standards and letting this great district fall even further you as a board and as a superintendent have a difficult job to do we realize that it's also a job you signed up for lowering standards and expectations is not an option or an answer we've watched as you as a board and a superintendent make decisions that certainly were not based on facts numbers or even sometimes common sense masking is not the only
123issue a couple of others are critical race theory which is racist in itself and unacceptable social emotional learning our teachers and administrators have enough to do let's put that back on the parents where it belongs a higher bar accountability expectations discipline these types of actions will solve most of your problems they're an ingredient for success in many ways this school district has done great things capstone outdated but great my ways awesome program ran correctly trades a good program that needs more funding and opportunity enough with overworking our teachers with critical race theory social emotional learning surveys and endless hours of overtime pay them and let them teach making the wrong decision and selecting a new superintendent will not bring this district back to where it was we as a family will make our medical decisions
124we will teach our children the social and emotional skills they need as a board it's up to you to make the decision to hire a leader who will lead us back to the district of choice academically one comment on the interim you said the interim dr royal wouldn't be a candidate for the job what if he's the candidate for the job has he stated that he's not doesn't want it or could he possibly be hired if he's the man hired thank you that concludes the public comment period thank you mr donaldson yes sir next item on the agenda dr mooney is our our monthly visit according to the north carolina general statutes with the school board policy concerning face coverings do you have a recommendation yes mr hyde members of the board as required in
125senate bill 654 school boards must approve a face covering policy each month for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year um at last month's meeting the board approved a face covering policy that made face coverings optional for all students and staff in grades k-12 and that there would be no contact tracing or exclusion of individuals who are close contacts to covet positive individuals you've heard our latest covet numbers as of today which reflect only one positive case and so my recommendation is that the board approve our current masking policy for the next month members of the board you've heard the recommendation of the superintendent do you have questions or comments hearing none is there a motion to approve the recommendation so moved second this motion and second to approve the superintendent's recommendation concerning face coverings
126all in favor any opposed it is passed unanimously and we reached the point in our meeting where it's we need to go into a time of closed session according to the north carolina general statutes 143-318.11 section a6 and section a3 the board will need to go into closed session to review personnel and to consult with the board attorney is there a motion to go into closed session so is there a second second all in favor any opposed it is unanimous thank you all for being with us tonight [Music] if i had to lose my [Music] [Applause] i don't have to think i only have to do it the results are always [Music] perfect would you like to hear my voice [Music] i can't see [Music] deep inside me [Music] the way i do don't have
