two new teams one from Garrett Morgan School of Engineering and Innovation and a districtwide all girls team these young ladies say they are ready to show their girl power girls can do anything yeah anything a man can do a girl can do as well a group of young ladies from six different District high schools joined the first cmsd all girls robotics team they are using their skills and passion to build and operate this robot this rookie team named lady voltage aims to prove that girls can build robots just as well as any boy dominated team I wanted to join the All Girls robotics team because it seemed like a very open and welcoming group to join and I was very excited to gain experience and knowledge with my peers all righty pop it out lady
voltage has mentors to guide them in all aspects of the process including electrical mechanical and business mind is that these are actually generating I'm very very proud of them um not even just from like robotics some of it's just been even on like a social and communication level because they have to speak to people they have to get you know judges are going to question them we're drilling them on questions about how the robot works and to watch them start to gain the confidence because they know the answers it's having that confidence to answer and so watching them build that and then you know making the decisions um you know the mentors are there to help guide and support them but they're ultimately making the decisions on the robots just turn it over would that
be easier well this may be a rookie team they have experienced members Daniela spent the last two years on the Davis robotics team they place second at State last year and she hopes to bring home a trophy with her new team I decide to join a new team because it was all girls team and I really like to give what I know my knowledge and to other teams that I really need because um they are rookie teams so I want to like give my what I experienced the last two years to them they are not the only ones new to the competition this is the first year Garrett Morgan School of Engineering and Innovation is competing as well bringing a total number of Robotics teams from cmsd to seven many of these students spend their
time at the Great Lake Science Center after school to work on their robots Kevin is the team captain for Garrett Morgan he believes this is an excellent hands-on experience for anyone interested in joining the stem field luckily we have mentors and they are free to help you out uh cuz we do have we do have our ups and downs and we do make mistakes I actually um I want to focus more on my education now cuz how I see how they already know the stuff and like second nature for them and I just want to have that same experience both teams enjoy working with professionals and learning skills that they can use beyond the competition we've also had had the ability to be put into leadership positions that I feel will be very beneficial for
our future especially since most of the team H plan on pursuing a career in the stem field um so that's been really great really fun being able to have the ability to supervise and given a sense of responsibility at our age the name of this and Status lights and it'll probably give us that and while you two are doing that let's me and the we are gathered here today to not only get insight on our candidates but to also get um their responses pertaining to the questions that our peers do have today just before Ohio's primary election students from Civics 2.0 invited candidates for the office of kyoga County prosecutor to colinwood high school for a conversation County prosecutor has a more effect on your everyday life than the president ever will um the Supreme
Court of the United States ever will they have a more effect once again on your everyday life than they ever will so it's so great to see the kids realize that realize the importance in getting to talk to the candidates and express their concerns within kyoga County incumbent prosecutor Michael omalie and his opponent Matthew an answered questions prepared by the students from several different high schools on topics including gun violence the prosecution of te and victims rights do either of you have plans to address the racial dispar disparities in the kyoga county legal system and if so how will the plan be executed what measures will you take to provide people of all Races a chance of Justice what would the county Prosecutor Office do to rehabilitate the youth to prevent reentry into the justice
system early intervention is the key to making sure that um the children do not come back into the uh into the justice system under my leadership working with the juvenile court judges we started an early intervention Center that on the front end evaluates juveniles who come before the court Owen a sophomore at Cleveland School of science and medicine served as the moderator of this conversation with the candidates so the questions they were very um I would say personal you know they they didn't they didn't hold back the candidates shared with the students the key role a prosecutor plays in the community and these firsttime voters appreciated their cander and thoughtfulness when answering their questions I really appreciated the transparency that the uh questions provided it really gave me an understanding of how the candidates feel
about certain issues that are really important for the public to understand this event a prime example of how these Civics 2.0 students are making sure their voices are heard and not only learning about democracy but living it get out and vote yeah go ahead Cleveland except that doesn't even make sense if Mel had locked the keys in a car during lunch these students at Facing History new Tech High School are providing nourishment for their minds Oak Ridge is probably the safest neighborhood in Atlanta they are reading dear Martin by Nick stone is power in the book and the book has a a ton of good information about real world problems the book is about a traffic stop that turns violent with police officers and how a young black teen grapples with racism and what it
means for his future while writing letters to Dr Martin Luther King Jr the students read some chapters together and then discuss during this lunchtime book club I don't disagree with everything he's doing like you know I have a heart like I would help too the goal is for them to break down each chapter to see how they see themselves in each chapter chapter with Justice and um how they can relate so here at face in history we like to bring and connect the outside world into the things that they're reading here inside of the school dear Martin is on the band reading list in some school districts it is a violation of our intellectual freedom and allowing students to think critically and decide what they would like to read but books are not band here
at cmsd principal Melissa swedo wanted her students to read a couple of band books this school year students should have opportunities and access to materials that they want to read that they we shouldn't keep them from it um they they are given materials to read in their English classes and everything but they should have the opportunity to find out more about their world and um and themselves by having access to a variety of different books and we shouldn't keep that away from them the students could choose from dear Martin and the hill we climb an inaugural poem for the country by Amanda Gorman that's the poem she read at President Joe Biden's inauguration some students are stunned this book is banned tells us to it's crazy I don't understand why is it banned all it
does is just explain like you know like what we should really be doing as people and not you know like not liking people just because of whatever is going on or they're different from us to hear that they were not allowed to read that book they wanted to read it even more it just gave them more of a edge like oh they're saying why like why can't I read this book what is this book going to tell me that the world don't want me to know I think people of higher power are afraid of truth and reality and they're afraid other people are going to be educated about reality um I think they're afraid that will be educated in a way that will help the world realize the wrongdoings use my language these students are
not only reading banned books but learning why those in positions of power may not want others to read them they are also learning how to find their voice and to advocate for themselves Miss F say a whole L there is a line in this book I believe it says um because to put our future first we must first set our differences aside and difference scares a lot of people it's scary to because it's different and I think if people learned more about what's so different they wouldn't be as scared but that's the thing like people need fear to stay in power cuz we know to put our future first we must first put our differences aside we lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another we seek harm to
none and harmony for all Let The Globe if nothing else say this is true ready 1 2 3 four Valeria starts her day with movement which she says is her favorite part of the morning I feel focused feel focused she and her classmates focus by breathing and out stretching and lifting weighted objects after that they take a walk let's go let's go around Wilbur Wright prek through 8 school to find landmarks they created to find certain rooms main entrance good J julan the exercises take about 20 minutes each day and will have a lasting effect I've seen like it's almost best when we start our day with it because I have students who are Wiggly and um starting our day with movement helps them come back in they're Focus they're centered identifying our emotions through
this and how it helps our emotions and making those connections ight up Mrs Bert says this is a significant accomplishment for the students third grade fourth grade fifth grade I actually have a second grader this year too um and I will get them for typically a threeyear span and I teach students who have um significant cognitive disabilities and other varying abilities and they have varying strengths as well in order to incorporate movement into the students day Mrs Bert says she had to call in her Village I think the biggest part is it can be intimidating to introduce a new program to even begin the courageous Pacers program both the Educators and Scholars had to take a step out on faith so the objective of courageous Pacers is to challenge students to walk 100 miles and
lift 10,000s now we modified those for the particular class that you saw um to make it attainable for them and uh the goal is to integrate uh healthy uh attitudes and healthy practices and habits with students to get the students engaged they first got them involved in making the map talk about symbols we talked about location so those were kind of our big vocab words and then the students um decided how to act out a location so like the cafeteria or um the music room they were clapping and I brought in a camera and a green screen and lights and reflectors and they acted out the different locations in the schools and chose a color that represented those places as well and tweak the program to accommodate any limitations I observed the class as they
first started and we determined that some of the exercises could be changed a little bit you may have noticed instead of doing the tricep extension this way we just had one of the bottles and we did it that way Mrs Bert says first some students were relunctant but eventually they came around a lot of the students who are resistance are now leaders in the program and are helping me count our reps are standing up in front of their peers and leading probably the only time in the day that they're leading throughout the day and it's just wonderful to see do you like the shoulder press bicep curl shoulder piss good job Hi Five DJ all right buddy and just like the school's motto the Educators watch the students soar as they Pace courageously around the
halls of Wilbur Wright with each step they are learning life skills and habits that they can use at school and at home I love to see them working together I love to see them um bonding with their peers and the students are becoming more confident how do I look you look great you look great to try new things like answer questions for the story what's interesting about the school that you like to see well the I see about the downstairs we go downstairs and then who's our principal that we see sometimes I see Mr a I see Mr Aid mhm I like it like um my CR new good job Julian these courageous Pacers are learning skills that will set them up for success with their feet firmly planted on the [Music] ground jul we
did it by guys e for e this meeting of the Board of Education of the Cleveland Municipal School District will come to order Mr Stockdale will you please call the role miss elod here Mrs hudnell here Mr Briggs here Mr herd here Mrs lebrone here Mrs link here Dr Shar here Mrs welsha there are seven members present thank you I would ask everyone who wishes to rise and participate in the Pledge of Allegiance stes thank you the chair will now entertain a motion to approve the minutes of the board work session of March 12 2024 the other thing that I'm most P do I hear a second second thank you all in favor signify by saying I I any opposed the eyes have it the minutes are approved next I'm pleased to introduce Dr Warren
Morgan to present the CEO report tonight Dr Morgan thank you so much Sher elod uh we're happy to be here for our second board meeting uh this month uh for our board business session uh one of the things you'll notice uh during the CEO report we always do our school Spotlight uh today we are not going to do the school Spotlight because we are actually going to do a core measure activity uh one of the areas that we want to always remain focused on is the instructional Excellence of our Scholars and um one of the things you may have heard me talk a lot about is the instructional core and why that's really important so in December I had the opportunity to present uh to the board some of our data and actually realistically where
we are some of our students the proficiency levels are low suspension levels of black and brown kids are 80% higher than those of their white counterparts these are the types of data issues that we are really collectively focused on and we as a community we need to continue to think about Solutions as we move forward and so I'm so excited to not do the time necessarily that we would do on a school Spotlight but but for us to actually look at where we are as a system and collectively come up with Solutions you'll see that in the agenda during the CEO update but we're actually going to do the core measures up activity on our instructional excellence and really keeping our North Star on instruction after once we do public participation so stay tuned you'll
see lots of information you see our tables we really want to engage in the instructional Excellence of our Scholars uh with that said there are a couple of announcements I want to uh share uh during this time before we move uh to a couple of our updates uh one is we are uh so excited as I mentioned last time that uh March is women's history month and uh we want to take this time to celebrate all of the women not only in cmsd but the women leaders throughout history the women in our lives to uh just celebrate and thank uh them for the accomplishments uh they continue to do and also the great Excellence uh that um they do for our system uh a as we did last month with black history month we acknowledged
and celebrated uh some of our most senior black uh Educators across our system uh that are in many different departments from teachers to support staff to our school leaders and it was a great celebration of all of our black Educators and the wonderful accomplishments that our black Educators do for our system this month we want to do the same when actually thinking about women's history not only within our system but across the board within our history so we have a little teaser for you tonight a video uh celebrating women's history that we want to show you that teaser but also know that the full video uh that our Collective cmsd Community worked on together uh will be in the CEO weekly Focus uh this upcoming week so with that let's look at the uh teaser
that we have for women's History Month other thing that I'm most passionate about is the well-being of young people so the opportunity to marry the two together is what inspires me every day to continue my career in Communications for school district for anytime that I have an opportunity to connect with a student a scholar we're reminded how important our work is and I just want to be part of that being a tomboy from a young girl I mean just being in sports as a young female athlete was a challenge in many cases dealing with coaches who didn't realize that you could wear high heels like I'm wearing today and wear tennis shoes on my other foot the biggest challenge I face in my career is being able to find my voice as a woman what
empowers me is knowing that I have the opportunity to make a difference the sister Accord is a movement designed to inspire 1 billion girls and women to learn how to love themselves and each other [Music] and that's just a little teaser of what will be to come in the CEO weekly Focus uh where we're just honoring and uplifting the voices of our women Educators across cmsd and thanking them for their continued contribution so thank you and be uh stay tuned for uh what is to come uh before I move on to the the next uh section one of the things I would also uh mention I'm uh happy to know that we have several people that are here uh from our community uh that I know we're looking forward to hearing from several uh during
our public participation um uh regarding uh the the school at um in cadell park and then also uh the the issues that many are are raising there uh what I'll say before we actually go into the public comment which will be a little bit later is we are absolutely committed to making sure that our families and our communities get the school that they need and deserve I know I had the opportunity uh to go to the school and visit a couple of weeks ago and seeing all the great things that are happening there but also seeing the building condition that it's in place um but also we're committed just as we're hearing from our families and we have heard from our families and students around a new building um we are also committed to hearing
from the community and that's one of the things as a a a leader of i as I've come in and people I've talked to about we want to make sure that we are listening and hearing a path forward so uh just know that there is consensus there are a uh an idea of actually hearing more uh Solutions as we move forward and we look forward to um uh finding a path forward so looking forward to hearing those comments and also just letting you know that uh we are in a space where we are actually looking for Solutions in a path forward uh with that I'll turn it back over to chair elot thank you Dr Morgan next next the board will hold within this meeting a public hearing as required by state law on the
0272024 2025 school year calendar the board will not vote on the adoption of the calendar until our April 23rd board business meeting which in compliance with state law is more than 30 days after this public hearing I want to note that there will be opportunities to sign up for public comment for that meeting as well for anyone wishing to comment specifically on the calendar after it's presented and Dr Morgan I know that you will share um ways for Community to give input to the district with regard to the calendar presentation as well so um up next would you please present the proposed calendar yes at this time I would like to bring uh Dr Florence who's our chief academic officer up um to share some of the things we found during our calendar analysis a
couple of things I want to let you know uh that's at the core of what we do we said that the instructional course is at the core of our decisions in everything that we we will do uh when we first presented some of the Sol Solutions uh given our financial reality we shared uh some ideas of which the district can have cost savings but we also said we were going to effectively engage stakeholders that meant engaging School leaders it meant engaging uh teachers where we could it meant engaging our uh education Partners in the union itm hearing from parents and uh from students and with that we have heard uh one thing I want you to know as you continue to uh learn about uh my leadership and also the leadership that is at this
table for the board leadership but also uh from uh the administration we are a team that we will always Center our work in student decisions instructional the core instruction we will Center it in data but we will also seriously take stakeholder feedback into account and with that I'm so excited to bring Dr Florence up to share what we've learned during this time and talk about the calendar recommendation for next school year good evening board chair elod VI chair hudnell Dr Morgan and board members this evening I will present to you our 2024 2025 calendar proposal CM oh I have the clicker cmsd currently operates with five different school calendars both students and staff get different instructional experiences depending upon their unique school calendar it is unclear to us if the investment of additional calendar days
and daily minutes to school schedules have a demonstrated evidence of academic returns in addition substantial Financial commitments separate pay schedules and differentiated Transportation supports are required to support these models we have always kept students at the center of this decision our conversations have centered around the number of instructional days and minutes that are provided to students in contrast to the number of professional development days provided to our teachers as you can see on this slide the professional development days for our teachers and staff members vary greatly ranging from 6 to 22 days there is variation in the number of instructional days for students also however the instructional days for students at on the extended year and year- round calendars more closely aligned with the instructional days for students on our traditional calendar so as you
can see from this um graphic traditional schools have 176 instructional days for students you see for our year round schools 179 days for in for instruction for students 196 instructional days for extended year schools with 205 day Calendars our extended year schools with 195 day calendars have 181 days for students and then our new tech extended year schools have 176 days the same as our traditional schools so there's a little bit of variation in the days that are being provided for students for instruction as well as for PD here are some of the benefits of transitioning to one unified calendar one C would provide cost savings to the district and create a more unified and Equitable School experience for students and for staff transitioning to One calendar would assist with operational efficiency and coordination of
school related activities finally we know that that we have a significant transiency rate within our district so the transition to one calendar would decrease some of the challenges that that are caused by student and staff Mobility across the district some of the challenges to the transition to one calendar include a decrease in salaries for some staff members MERS due to a reduction in the number of days they are working transitioning to one unified calendar would provide fewer instructional days for some students and fewer professional development days for some teachers on this slide you see the schools that would be impacted by a transition um to one unified calendar these schools would be the most impacted um you can see the student days range again from 176 days which is the same number of days in
our Traditional School calendar all the way to 196 instructional days note the number of professional development days for teachers and staff range from six days which is the same number on our traditional calendar all the way to 22 days the next two slides represent some of the data that we reviewed as we were making the calendar decision our goal in reviewing the data was to determine what impact if any the extra days and extra minutes would have on student achievement or currently have on student achievement one of the metrics that we revie reviewed was school ratings schools receive an overall rating of 1 to five stars from the state department the school rating is composed of five different components achievement progress Gap closing graduation and early literacy as you can see the average school ratings
for each calendar type range from 2.5 for the high schools on our 195 extended year calendar to 4.1 for the three high schools on the 205 extended year calendar please note that the two high schools or two of the high schools on the 205 extended day calendar are criteria schools which means that students must meet certain criteria to attend the schools aside from the high schools that are on the 205 extended day calendar the average rating for our high schools regardless of the calendar type is less than three stars our K8 schools do show a slight difference between those that are on the 195 day calendar extended year which have an average of 3.3 stars and those on a traditional calendar which have an average of 2.7 stars as you can also see here we
have our math and Ela data and there is variation between schools and school types depending on the calendar type the additional data that we reviewed um to make our decision around the transition to one unified calendar was also around average attendance rates the rates range from 63.4% for our 195 day extended year calendars to 90.2 for our K8 schools that are on the 195 day calendar and 90.4% for those schools on the extended year 205 day calendar there is also great variation in chronic absenteeism rates across the schools and calendar types when looking at graduation rate the data shows that the average graduation rate is about the same for our high schools on the traditional calendar and our high schools on the 195 day extended year calendar our yearr round high schools with 179 instructional
days have an average graduation rate that is just three points higher than our high schools on the Traditional School calendar so again lots of variation in student performance in absenteeism rate also in graduation rate so some of our engagement opportunities that we we' had so far we have talked to principles and gotten their feedback about the calendar and how it might impact instruction throughout the school day we've talked to our CTU executive board members teachers and staff members through let's talk parents through let's talk and then also community members through let's talk future engagement opportunities include parents in collaboration with our faith Department families of impacted schools partners that are connected to Unique School models continued collaboration between principles and chapter chairs and also teacher staff and community members through let's talk so again the
decision about our calendar for next year has always had the instructional core at the center as you heard Dr Morin said say in reviewing our district data by the individual School the the additional days and minutes within our yearr round and extended year school days has had VAR impacts on student performance the district recommendation is to continue with the five calendars that we currently have for the 24 25 school year throughout the course of next year we will continue to research the varying school calendars and school models collect and analyze data for our schools and meet with stakeholders the district would like to in the future move to One calendar that calendar that provides all students with more days of instruction and all staff members with high quality opportunities for high quality professional development the
calendar will now sit as you heard Chair elod say for a month for feedback tomorrow on the district website you will see a button um that allows you to get feedback for the calendar through let's talk any questions is there any any discussion from board members Dr Shar thank you Dr Florence for this uh for this presentation um uh I I I I want to thank you and and the district leadership for uh for taking the time to do this work um I have u a question related to what we will do over the course of the next year um so when you say um you'll collect data and and do the research um I think it would be helpful for us um on the board as well as the community to um to see
uh the framework for what kind of research you're going to be doing what kind of data you're going to be collecting and and how you will make these decisions um at the beginning of the school year um so that um so that when the when um you are ready to make decisions and take action it is clear and apparent that it was a process that was well laid out and and followed through thank you for that feedback yes sir yeah similarly um appreciate Dr sher's comments want to second that also um appreciate the considerations being taken around Equity of opportunity for students and teachers I know that the numerous calendars are cumbersome right but I think that it's important to understand what the impact is on kids what the impact is on the people that
are responsible for the education of our kids and um just want to say I'm glad to see that information um considered and represented and look forward to learning more over the next year thank you Dr Morgan yeah one one thing I'll share there and this is great feedback and things that we'll go back to to uh reiterate uh in my experience whenever we I've been in a system and we've radically moved instruction there's been three things at the core of that strategy high quality curriculum more teacher professional development and a high quality assessment framework as many um know we're working collectively not only with our leaders our teachers our teachers union on what a unified curriculum could look like so we're one step there we also need to be in a place to look at
what does professional development look like and when we look at this model one of the things that'll be at the core is what does it look like not only to streamline but to give more to some of those schools that don't have um uh the additional professional development so we'll come back to look at that but those are the things that we want to be in a space to do to actually look at what are we adding to the system and not just taking away thank you Dr Florence thank you anything else okay next we will have public participation for a period of no longer than 40 minutes during this segment of the business meeting we will hear public comment on either agenda or non-agenda items the public participation period will be for persons who
previously submitted the online request to speak form and each May address the board for up to 3 minutes each the timer will be visible on the screens on either side and I will let you know when you have reached your time we expect everyone to respect the time limit to ensure Equitable access to the podium and so that we do not have to limit public comment in the future first up we will have um Stacy sagert Stacy sagert uh thank you Dr Morgan and uh the board and everyone who's here this evening um my wife and I are Cleveland residents and we have three kids in cmsd schools and uh right now we are deeply disappointed with the misinformation that Dr Morgan has been presenting as fact in some public statements including the comment reported
in signal that the Mackenzie Scott Grant and the get more opportunities fund had not been distributed equitably that most of the dollars had gone to just seven schools and that campus International had won many of the grants so far this is a serious mischaracterization of how these funds were distributed and appears only to serve the purpose of pitting cmsd schools against one another we've seen this move from the populace Playbook before in school districts around the country when the goal of Administrators is to distract from poorly conceived policy Maneuvers one reason that many schools did not realize their projects funded was due to the massive amount of red tape teachers and students had to Wade through in order to actually see any dollars from this program but a bigger issue is why our own CEO
would denigrate one of his own schools rather than celebrate a program that delivers on one of its major state of objectives teaching students to take action within their Community rather than implying that teachers and students who had successfully applied for Grants had been given some unfair Advantage why not leverage their skills to hold teacher-led student-led workshops to build capacity across the district CIS serves students from all over Cleveland and has the same number of students eligible for free and reduced lunch as every other school to imply that there is something unseemly going on is just well unseemly I am encouraged to hear that the board and Dr Morgan are going to consider additional Data before making moves to cut extended school day and extended school year because this is a substantial change to from the
Cleveland plan and I wonder if this body is still committed to the Cleveland plan we recently made a decision to enroll our oldest child in a non-public High School due in large part to the uncertainty around what the school day will look like in the future our daughter is accepted into Cleveland School of science and medicine but this Flagship school that admits graduates to HBCU and IVs and fantastic institutions right here in Cleveland will likely be unable to continue to post those kinds of numbers if their school day is reduced and sorry um I'm I'm imploring the board and Dr Morgan to skip over the obvious unforced error here and improve upon what we see already Works which is more instructional time for students and finally we've heard the board propose cuts to central office
staff as a cost-saving measure but I'm wondering whether any of these Cuts will come from positions that are currently filled or if these Cuts will come primarily from Central Central office positions that were posted in the fall but remain unfilled at present which are cuts from these zombie positions that aren't actually consuming any budgetary resources I strongly urge Dr Morgan and the board to carefully consider how they want their legacy to be remembered by the city of [Applause] Cleveland and just wanted to I know with most of those things Miss Edgar will uh have a response to you but one of the things I wanted to share we absolutely agree that the uh we you know the way that programs have actually utilized the funding that is great I just want to make sure all
schools can actually have that opportunity as we mentioned before and we're going to look at the data across our system you just saw even from our last calendar presentation data varies um one of the the metrics we're going to be looking at our suspension rates right now where 80% of our black and brown kids receive suspensions over the their white uh counterparts and so we need to be a system where we celebrate and I celebrate campus International I love the IB model it's one of the ones we expanded when I was in Indianapolis Public Schools but we also have to we have to be accountable for all of our systems and all of our schools and so I just want to make be on the record of saying I celebrate the schools I celebrate the
success of our schools and I want to make sure we can distribute that wealth and Equity across the board and Excellence across the board so thank you thank you next Mr Quenton Davis sorry principal to our esteemed board members cmsd family and community members I am Quinton Davis proud principal of gar Morgan School of Engineering and Innovation and president of the Cleveland Council of Administrators and supervisors I have the pleasure and important role of of being the voice of this amazing group of people as we navigate the complexities of Education in today's world it is crucial to emphasize the importance of equity in our schools Equity is not just a buzzword it is a fundamental principle that guides Us in ensuring that every student has access to the resources support and opportunities they need to
thrive academically socially and emotionally within cmsd as we plan for the upcoming academic year or next academic year it's in it's in excuse me it's essential to ensure that our school calendar reflects our commitment to equity and being inclusive creating an equitable School environment for all students requires a collective effort from all stakeholders including administr ERS teachers staff parents and students themselves let me repeat and students themselves here are some key principles and considerations for creating an equitable school calendar cultural sensitivity recognize and honor our cultural and religious diversity uh within our community when scheduling holidays and breaks avoid conflicts with major religious um observances and consider in incorporating cultural celebrations into the school calendar to promote understanding and inclusiveness family engagement consult with families and stakeholders to gather input on the school calendar consider
the needs of working parents caregivers and families when scheduling parent teacher conferences open house and other important events to ensure maximum particip IP ation and engagement balance breaks design a balanced schedule of breaks and holidays throughout the year to support students well-being and prevent burnout consider the impact of extended breaks on learning and provide support for students who may experience challenges um through during who may experience challenges during transition periods lastly Equitable access ensure that all students have Equitable access to educational opportunities by scheduling important assessments exams and academic events at times that minimize disruptions and accommodate the diverse learning styles and needs of our students this is also uh this also includes you go ahead and hit it if you want to take two seconds and just wrap thank you this also includes the
decision to keep or release extended year year round or extended day all schools must be on the same playing field when educating our students professional development days allocate professional development days Strate strategically to provide principles the opportunity to provide growth collaboration and training to staff by prioritizing Equity inclusion and thoughtful planning in our school calendar we can create a more cohesive and supporting learning environment for everyone I encourage feedback and suggestions from our school Community as we work together to finalize our calendar for the next academic school year thank you for your dedication to promoting equity and excellence in education for our kids here at cmsd thank [Music] you next Susan merer good evening I'm a teacher at campus international school and not that long ago maybe three years ago in 2021 I actually did
speak about making all schools Equitable and making all schools like campus International because it's not fair to our children it's not Equitable so I'm glad to hear other folks saying that um thank you for considering extended day and extended year for this upcoming year we have a stay and I hope that the data proves that we can continue in this fashion um regarding District responses to public comment I was going to speak a lot about that tonight but just before this meeting I saw the district responses so I appreciate that as well personally I would like them to be more detailed and maybe responsive but I do appreciate the fact that they were there and I'm hoping that the board policy on this matter has followed going forward I'd like to also talk about the
teacher and substitute teacher shortage and I have another proposal that I'd like to make I don't have it written but I have have it here I understand the district is not actively hiring teachers and we have a tremendous shortage we're hiring Subs but not teachers so the problems we have will continue teachers will continue to leave Student Success and students will suffer currently because of the teacher and sub shortage cmsd suffers from overcrowded classrooms a severe lack of consistency and continuity for our Scholars and increasing violence in many schools as has been spoken about here I did it three years ago we heard Garfield parent not long ago and grandparents at the last meeting it's heartbreaking it's increasing um the chaos and violence is astounding at some of our schools and it leads to burnt
out teachers and suffering students and it again exacerbates your teacher shortage all of this of course leads to stagnant student academic growth and success so I propose that the staff at 11-11 and East both admin and teachers on assignment such as those in the early childhood Department go on some sort of rotating schedule an official schedule that you could put in place to teach and show up for these students in these classrooms that are missing a permanent teacher I think it could be done it could be a very specific thing and you'd be doing your part then in helping these children find the success that they need in light of this shortage um there's a lot more I could say on that but I'm going to go to my last point but I would like
you to seriously consider it and if you're wanting me to talk to you more about it I'd be happy to do so um I I know friends of mine would like to say it too finally board on April 3rd this year it is par professional appreciation day and I am suggesting to you at the bequest of one of my dear friends who is here that we officially add this to our academic calendar we have whole weeks to celebrate principles we have whole weeks to celebrate assistant principles volunteers and teachers there's a whole month to celebrate the board an actual whole month board recognition month in January so adding this one day to our calendar would be a real easy fix and would along with increasing paraprofessional pay to a living wage as has been spoken
about before show tremendous us tremendous amount of appreciation and respect to our hardworking caring and underpaid par professionals thank you so much I look forward to your responses thank you next Miss Samaria rice and Mr Paul you are next after her hello everyone um superintendent and the CEO thank you all for having us um I'm here in solidarity with the cadel community to um stand in solidarity with them in reference to the um New design and uh we want to work together I am agreeance that uh Mary and C seler needs to be new rebuil and things like that um I just wanted to um voice um just a little concerns as I already talked to you Dr Morgan um in reference to the plan um we want to work together and I just don't
believe that uh the the CM CM cmsd School District um considered the community aspect I know you all talk to the teachers and the families uh but the community aspect the people that's there daily every day that has to uh be in that Community I think that should have been considered as well we also talked about it Sara as well so I just wanted to uh let y'all know that we want to work together and see a design works for everybody in the community myself my son's Memorial is there I want to see it um excuse me I want to see it this new school um you know complement the memorial also the Watchtower over there the clock tower I'm sorry um complimented so we want to work together and you know have that input
for myself and the community as well as the teachers and the families um that attended in school so I just want you to keep that in mind keep that in consideration and things like that um so that's really all I had to say and I thank y'all uh for allowing me to come here and if you all don't know who I am I'm Samaria rice the founder and CEO of the Tam rice Foundation I am the mother of Tam rice this is also Tam rice 10th anniversary year I was also um going to be doing a 5K run over at the park this year at cadel Park but I got a call from Johnson stating that it could have been um under reconstruction so um we'll see how that goes down the line and the
community reached out to me as well that's another reason why I'm here and um Dr Morgan as I told you before I hadn't heard from you all in over two years so I'm just here to be in solidarity with them and myself and you know with the hopefully to build the bridge and the Gap thank you thank you Miss rice next hawaa Paul yeah thank you uh Miss rice um I'm Hawa the pow um I live um at 1744 um East 30th Street um you know I'm just really happy to to come here and you see all the different um Dynamics and ethic um people who who who came to the school board today and everybody came for um different reasons um to voice the concerned they want their voice to be heard um but
we're here for the kids you know we're here for the young people you know Cleveland is one of the fewest U cities that have uh uh Cleveland's remembrance page and um it's I have five kids so uh to be able to see our young people um some of the devastating things that happen happen out in the community that that's concerning to me um and like Mrs Rice said we we have to work together someone said that together uh we can uh move mountains you know and so we got to look at how we um can come together to collaborate work together uh just like we're here in support um for the the park let's be here in support for the kids so we make oursel available to the school district to the superintendent we got
a chance to talk to Mr Morgan um and everybody needs an opportunity you know um he wasn't here um and he just came here so we have to give him opportunity um to um to make change I would just like to say this one thing with working at an atris um Charter School um and just to say about when we came here the first interaction that you have as a student uh when you come to school is you know it's your building security the people who open the door and how they greet you you know um we we have to keep that in mind you know um that's the first interactions the kids have uh we need to have more of a customer friendly um uh atmosphere for people to come in uh we don't
have to agree uh we can agree to disagree uh but you know uh let's show that we you know we have to lead the kids and show them that we can be better you know um and we have to be mindful on how we treat one another how we talk to one another um and how we able to come together um to to bring changes um in the school district so I um look forward to um providing my level of expertise I worked in the charter school um I I work for the small business administration as a construction analyst I was on uh planning uh city um uh zoning and planning so I offer my level of expertise uh and experience uh and I'm also Mrs uh Rice's advisor U to her foundation so we're
here um to offer uh our our support and try to help and like she said before we want to build a bridge thank you all right thank you Mr Po next Danelle Chappelle Danelle Chappelle okay Becky Gaylord um ma'am if you have any materials to distribute to the board would you mind giving them to Mr beroff over here thank you very much board members Dr Morgan Community teachers and students I'm Becky Gaylord I'm the parent of um two students cmsd students one who graduated uh from campus International High School and one who's still at the high school and what I want to speak about tonight is the high school because it's a k to2 school it was Enis as a K to 12 school and the the aspects that make the diploma program a diploma
program are the theory of knowledge the creativity activity and service and the extended essay which is a a s a research project that is a self-directed 4,000-word essay and campus International High School has cmd's only diploma program so so when graduates of the K8 who by the way still have two more years of the middle program go on to the high school there's no other place for them to go that's a public school in Cleveland except campus International High School why is that important we know because the international Balor organization has these data that show that of the students who attempt they don't even have to earn the esteemed and and coveted diploma the ones who've attempted more than eight in 10 go on immediately the next fall to four-year universities which makes an amazing
difference in their lifetime earnings and it comes back to their to their regions to their families to their next Generations and this school has never ever received in the 14 years that this was envisioned it's now been six years that it's existed it's had an interim principal for four of those years it's had three principles since February of this year when we found out after the fact that the principal left 2third of the teachers resigned in one week two years ago and we know it cost about $20,000 to retrain a student in an urban high school that's a quarter of a million of dollars worth of teacher training that just walked out the door and they walked out by and large to other Cleveland schools they fled that school it is a disaster it is
a disaster of the scores of students who were able to attempt the diploma last year zero earned it and you know that when students every student in a class fails a test it's never the students this school serves students from across this city it is the picture of equity it more than 90% are black and brown students and I want to just close please by saying this is my question will you the board Dr Morgan back up the rhetoric we've heard and the support the district tonight here and let us know it's not just words it's actions will you dedicate to the professional development that we need and let this community have the high school the diploma program that it was envisioned to have 14 years ago and I'm I'm wrapping up please let me
this is passionate take I understand thank you you have allowed others to finish I have a written statement I will please wrap up with your respect this is the first time we've gone public because we've tried to work within the district until tonight but I come with other parents there is an IB Regional Conference that is meeting in Shaker Heights next month for district leaders no one from cmsd is signed up and it's in our backyard show us you will give us the respect and not just the rhetoric but the action by attending this event and by meeting with the parents to tell us how you are going to let this High School which is up for recertification next fall it's not meeting any of the requirements it will up thank you it will fail
without your support thank you [Applause] and Miss Gaylord Miss Gaylord I want to make sure we get someone from our academics team to follow up with you so thank you and thanks for providing the I really appreciate that the high school has fallen short of the public attention thank you so much appreciate you next we have Jamie braer Jamie Brazier Dr Morgan and board members my name is Jamie braer I live across from cadel park across from Maran Selzer School I've lived there for 22 years I've been the eyes that watches over the park when there's danger I'm the first one to call them I want you to know that I and my neighbors are not against of building a new school we would we were told there would be a refurbished school over 10
years ago and then everything went silent then about 3 years ago Patty chobby and her group says she engaged with us to help uh show us a um a plan for the new school which wipes out most of the park at least 22% I know in our case against the city and the school it says only 5% but we prove that in court it is at least 22% and a loss of almost 40 Legacy Trees close to a 100 years old I also want you to know the fact that because you took us to court instead of talking with the community no you came in during when the fire started but it cost the city and school $486,000 in lawyer fees against us and we could have talk that that's part of the deficit that
what 168 million that is part of it and nobody knows till today there was a land swap done during covid which we were not informed of and it was all done Hush Hush through emails and cudell park a park that was gifted by Frank cadell to be a park forever is being totally ignored and they're just wiping out the park setting the school in the middle putting some new saplings which all the new schools that have them have saplings that are dying there's no evidence that they will grow fast enough to produce the oxygen that's there now I'm not trying to be angry but I am passionate I'm very passionate about all this and we were swept under the rug nobody wanted to talk to us that's why went to court but it should not
have been like that we should have been able to exchange and again I say we are not against a new school we were told it would be refurbished on the same footprint and that's what we would like to help save our park and again thank you for your time thank [Applause] you Mr Don Freeman good evening everyone good evening um Dr Morgan you conferred with the Cleveland teachers union executive board members in November and I'm more or less uh here to inquire how have you responded to their concerns there were multiple times I engaged with them in November one around our financial uh realities but I think you're uh speaking of specifically uh when I met and there were many different uh concerns that were raised around safety and instruction um and those continue to
be things that we discuss as you know we're currently in negotiations uh and those things continue to be top of mind even as we look at our our data and um thinking about ways that we can create the conditions for our system this supports um the academic Excellence we're looking at while also supporting our students thank you very much for your comments and there's more work to do so I just want to let you know there's a lot more work to do so thank you Mr Freeman thank you um next we have Brent eisenbach good evening everyone my name is Brent eisenbach I'm a parent of two students that attend campus International I'm also a resident of the Edgewater cadel neighborhood um I stood before you 7 months ago and asked this body to slow
down the imminent destruction of cadell park for the proposed Maran Seltzer School uh Dr Morgan I'm happy to hear that you're uh ready to come and meaningfully talk and listen with the community over the past several months I've been privileged to receive quite an education from cmsd during my process of researching the history associated with the land swap of cadel Park and the proposed Marian Seltzer School planning uh that education is included learning many different truths about this project I'd like to list a few of those truths the first truth as Jamie brazer had said was that the friends of cadel Park want a new school we also want to preserve the park that's there Mary and szer school in cadel Park have coexisted in the same space for 52 years there's no reason that
a new school and a Preserve Park cannot exist for our future I've learned that cmd's partner in this project the city of Cleveland did not follow its own internal protocols when exchanging this land I learned that cmsd in the city of Cleveland prioritized commercial development of the old Waton Lake site rather than prioritizing School the children having a swing space I learned that the city of Cleveland did zero public Outreach when it disposed of this Surplus property Surplus property is the city of Cleveland's word it's not mine I learned that this land swap occurred during March of 2021 think back that was in the middle of covid when families were fighting to survive before a vaccine was even available to us I learned that cmsd last came to the community in March of 22 and
they presented a plan that was Compact and it preserved the green space and it also followed the city ordinance which allowed for that land swap replacing the Playfield and sharing parking with the cadel rec center I learned that cmd's consultant the Cobalt group during the summer of 2022 switched plans on the community and made an oversized school and an oversized parking lot and they got rid of the replacement Playfield and they did not share parking as per city ordinance I learned that the truth when it's crushed down to the ground it will rise up again I look forward to continuing this conversation with you Dr Morgan and thank you very much for hearing me out tonight thank you next fousy bador good evening Dr Moran welcome to Cleveland um I'm a resident of the kudal
neighborhood for for over 45 years uh when on May 23rd 1981 we moved to this house that blocks the southern end of West 99 the Northern end is blocked by Kell Park so from that house you could see the swings the kids at Kell Park it's only 500 ft apart we had twins on that day 23 months old twins used to take him every day to the swings at Goodell their first swings was at gell Park their first baseball play was at godell Park the first softball was as they were growing up the first swimming when they were four years old it was at Cel Park and guess what the first school was at Marion C saler so to me Marion C salor is in our heart and in our soul same as the codel
park when 2014 we had a meeting at the school and the subject was discussed then was the renovating the old school the existing school and they ask me because I'm a community activist especially in safety and stuff they asked me my opinion about the safety of the neuron and I I put my my opinion in that and we suggest that the entrance be from the s from Cel from the park sry instead of from West 98 then everything is cut off we were didn't hear anything I personally as active as I am in the community didn't hear anything until July 1st 2023 from 2014 to to July 1st 2023 that's when I heard there was a land Swap and there when I heard there is a project can then we then we found out we
start finding out thing that it went from renovating the old building to little exist it expansion outside the building to other more expansion outside the building than to the whole yard to Detroit that would Dr Morgan that would cut that Park is open south to North East to West a community people would watch through the park to oh my God can take a few seconds just to wrap problem so the the park is is a community to to walk through it I mean woman go to work they go through the park to the RPA cross the street uh and they come back from 4th of July firework they come from the lake walk through the park to their homes this park is a community park the park represent a community from Edge Water to the
border with Brooklyn to the border with Lakewood to West 85th 65th that area this all area named Cel after that part I mean there's so many things I could I I don't have time I mean to to the Cel family we Mar and c saler and the and the and the park they're twins to me they're they're in my soul and in my heart my kids start the school at Mar start they represented Kel in championship in Indiana Goldie gloves basketball stuff like that so Dr Morgan I'm asking you let's let's build the bridge between us we don't want the wall that Cobalt Cobalt group try to build between us we want the school we love the we want Mar and S to be the best school and we would give anything we need to
give but we need you to stand with us to save the park and save the school both thank you thank [Music] [Applause] you and finally Andrea doy Murray good evening Dr Morgan chair elott members of the board my name is Andre dri Murray and I am the art teacher John Adams College and Career Academy I'm also the travel advisor for our travel Club I come here this evening to thank you and thank you for reaching out to me last month to share the good news with Dr buck and I the great news that a private donor said yes and that they committed to paying the balance for our trips yes they committed to paying $ 34,7 186 so that our students could travel to Greece in four days we are leaving to go to Greece
this Saturday so thank you thank you and thank you to the anonymous donor I hate that you're anonymous we really want to thank you but thank you this is my public thank you to the anonymous donor and we appreciate the fact that you recognized that when we were leaving and you said good luck on your fundraiser that you recognized the good luck on the fundraiser was really our fundraiser the community's fundraiser so we appreciate that we are so elated that we are we are leaving and that the financial burden and the stress is now off of the families and that they can participate on just what should we pack what do we need how many euros should we take so we're so very excited that our Journeys across the city from board meeting to board
meeting to this board meeting did pay off and that the persistence paid off and prior to my first appearance I did say to someone that I had endurance for this I did not anticipate that it would turn into a campaign and that I was going going to be determined to make sure that the students at John F Kennedy and John Adams had a chance to travel that it was my personal mission to say we're going to Greece and it happened so being told to pause postpone change the date that didn't really work for me it didn't sit well in my spirit because we had already been on a campaign track we'd raised more than $155,000 so I had a personal goal to be an advocate and make it happen happen and hence that's the outcome
so Dr Morgan again I hope that you will have an opportunity perhaps to join us tomorrow we're going to have a final family meeting at John F Kennedy High School at 5:00 pm and the families would be very excited to meet you and or members of your team Dr Florence Dr Mosley anyone who had a a hand in helping this happen because if it were not for you reaching out and helping us with all of the paperwork and everything that needed to be you know um managed this would not have happened so I completely thank you from the bottom of my heart and as I am closing one final ask for the month seconds finish up thank you one final ask for the month of March this ask a very big favor if it is
possible to find someone on your facilities team that would be so kind as to possibly open up John Adams High School on Saturday at 6:00 a.m. because our school is closed for spring break and the remote school will be closed for spring break so I really would not want my children and families to congregate in the parking lot at 6:00 a.m. it would be safe for them to enter the building so that when our van comes we're not just hanging out in the parking lot there are too many of us to just hang out that we could actually be in a safe spot for about 75 minutes prior to leaving to go to the airport so if that is possible that is my last last ask for the month of March and as always um
I invite you to tomorrow's event and also to room 148 at John Adams College and Career Academy and my name is Andrea dacky and I approved this message thank you thank [Applause] you that concludes our public comment period next the board will consider the adoption of 41 resolutions in the areas of Board of Education Finance information techn information technology operations and equity and culture the board discussed each of these resolutions at our March 12th board work session the chair will now entertain a motion to adopt resolutions 7.01 through 7.32 the full titles of which are set forth in the board meeting agenda thank you these are 32 resolutions authorizing the filing of complaints against the property valuation of certain real property Parcels identified in each resolution Dr Morgan any further explanation of these resolutions yes
cmsd like many other school districts in Ohio occasionally file files complaints with the County Board of revisions challenging the County's valuation of commercial property located in the school district when the board of revision decides such a complaint in the district's favor and increases evaluation of such property the result is increased property tax revenue to our school district last year state law was changed to specifically require Boards of Education to adopt a separate resolution for each real property parcel except that a single resolution May identify more than one property parcel if each parcel uh has the same owner the required 7-Day notice has already been uh given timely to each property owner and as required each of these resolutions includes the name of the property owner the base of for the complaint the permanent parcel number
of the property the property address and the taxier of the complaint thank you is there any discussion from board members hearing no further discussion Mr Stockdale would you please call the role sorry Mr Briggs did you have something no oh okay go ahead Miss elot yes Mrs hudnell Mr Briggs yes Mr herd yes Mrs lebrone yes m link yes Dr Shar yes motion passes with seven votes thank you um next I'll turn it over to Dr Morgan to talk through our core measures discussion yes as I mentioned earlier uh this evening we will be presenting where we are currently on our academic uh data one of the things I shared at the beginning of this uh uh school year was that my commitment would be to come before the board look at where we are
according to our current uh core measures we're going to be meeting with the board in a couple of weeks to adopt our district board goals um but in the meantime we have our core measures that are uh areas in College and Career measures proficiency measures Equity measures and also culture measures to see where we are uh this evening we are excited to engage uh with board members as well as our uh community that is here in person as well as those that are online virtually uh to discuss where we currently are on our progress uh we do have some slides that are uh attached to board dos uh and I know Dr Florence I'm going to invite her up in a moment to facilitate this activity uh but we will describe how members who are
watching this virtually if you're watching this from home how you can engage uh throughout this process uh but we're going to do this a little differently uh bringing the classroom a little bit into uh our board meeting and uh getting some meaningful engagement out of where uh uh looking at our student achievement data and thinking about Solutions as we move forward so with that I bring Dr Florence who's our our chief academic officer up to the podium so good evening again board CH elod Vice chair hudel Dr Morgan and board members tonight will be providing you with an update on our cmsd core measures and engaging in a group activity that will allow everyone in the room as well as at home to have a chance to analyze some of our district data and the
strategies we are currently using to address the data so before we begin that we wanted to give you a little bit of a background before we begin so as Dr Morgan said this is the second of three board presentations around our cmsd student outcomes as identified by the C CEO goals in the 23 24 school year today's presentation we will give you an update on previously introduced measures also talk about historical and leading data for our four four four other core measures not discussed previously and then provide updates to the data in combination with some of the strategies and efforts we have begun this year to drive improved student outcomes um I will provide you with an overview of our cmsd core measures and the leading indicators of those measures to ground us all on
the data that we will review I'll give you a quick update on our demographics then individual groups will have an opportunity to do an analysis of one of the newly introduced measures or an analysis of one of the previous measures and then finally we'll have an opportunity for questions so this slide is very familiar U these are our core measures that we are currently um working around throughout the course of the school year we have two College and Career measures aimed at achieving 90% 4year And 5-year graduation rates and 90% of Scholars enrolling in college being employed or enlisting after graduation we have two achievement measures one measure for our K8 schools that is aimed at 65% of students achieving Proficiency in ela and math and a similar achievement measure for our high schools with
a goal of 55% achievement in ela and math we have two culture and climate measures one measure is around the percentage of Scholars reporting social emotional wellness and the other is around measuring addressing the number of serious safety incidents that are happening at our schools finally we have three Equity measures these measures address the percentage of schools exceeding State growth expectations in ela and math how well we are achieving the targets designed to eliminate gaps in our in our achievement data and the proportionality of discipline rates by race and other subgroups and finally the percentage of elll Scholars achieving proficiency goals for tonight's presentation and activity five of the 10 core measures will have updates with the latest leading data available and one of of the 10 core measures will be introduced today with historical
data and the latest leading data available we will review both officially reported historical data for our core measures as well as leading indicators for the core measures official historical data typically comes from our state report card and or other official end ofe numbers leading indicators are data points that are predictive of where we will land on the official measure or show how our progress on a measure from the start of the year to now and then grass and tables will clearly labeled be labeled leading indicators as predictive values so you know um which ones are predictive year-to date numbers or directly as a leading indicator so for each of the core measures on the left hand side you see the updated leading indicators that we will use throughout the year to help us monitor our
progress for example to help us predict how well our Scholars will perform on the Ohio State tests that are coming up in just a few weeks we track and monitor student proficiency on the map nwaa map assessment in the following winter winter the leading indicators help us to know how what's working well in classrooms how students are performing individually overall and by subgroups and what adjustments we need to make if the data is not moving in the right direction on this slide you see our newly introduced core measures on the left and the leading indicators that we are using throughout the year to help us monitor our progress on the right this is an update on our district demographic data so you can see as of March 14th 2024 our enrollment is at 34,9 62
two that is down slightly from the December data that you saw about 160 students you also see the updated demograph demographic data with slight variations up and down for each of our subgroups all right so for our activity we have two goals for the activity that we will engage in for this after this evening we will review and discuss student data for our district aligned to the core measures then also review and discuss some of the strategies that we will use that we are currently using to address the data um important to note these are just Str we're using in this year these are not our final or overall strategies that we'll be using in the future but this is what we've been working on for the course of this school year at this time
I'll ask the facilitators for this session to come down to their tables and then we're going to invite all the other audience members to also come to a table um so we can begin the activity yes okay okay okay we are going to use tables 1 through 7 board members you are going to come to these two tables right here at the front to engage if you are an audience member you may feel free to join tables 1 through 7 at this time okay we can let's get let's get sett not just one probably all right everyone that is participating have a table yes all right we have a few norms for our time together listen to understand respect others and their opinions actively participate stay on topic as much as possible and then when
we want to come back together I'll raise my hand and the the facilitators know this protocol when I raise my hand we'll come back together everyone is quiet so we can move to the next part of the activity so each table has a facilitator at your table first go around and introduce yourselves so that everyone knows who's at the table with them share your name your role what you do in cmsd or if you're a parent in cmsd and then we'll come back back together in just about one one minute so take a minute to introduce yourselves at your table all right I think we're done so for this first round you and your table your facilitator will go over the data that is on the table to give you an idea of what you
are looking at so they will give you an overview of the DAT data set you will have five minutes to review the data with those at your table as you are reviewing the data think about these two questions what do you notice and what do you wonder and have sticky notes you have pens pencils you can write on the sticky notes that are on your on your table or you can actually write on the data set that's fine as well and then you will have about eight or nine minutes for this round so your facilitator is going to give you an overview first and then you will analyze the data that's there in front of you what do you notice what do you wonder as you are reviewing that and you'll have about 8 minutes
for this round if you are watching at home you have access to the data in the board docs document and so these same two questions you'll be responding to as you're watching watching at home all right I'm going to start the timer 8 minutes e for e [Music] e that e this e I mean even so [Music] e oh the front table all right let's hear from a few tables about what they noticed or wondered about the data that they looked at facilitators I'm looking at you thank you Dr Florence uh our table uh noticed that during the 2021 school year there was a significant difference between the white students attendance and chronic absenteeism against all other sub groups it was significantly lower and then it came back up and clustered for the rest of
the years as was the data prior so after the pandemic the subgroups kind of cluster back together for attendance you don't see before and after got it all right what else so our table's looking at student discipline rates and our table uh noticed that in October um there was a a sharp decline in a number of um incidents of suspension that occurred um and hypothetized that around the fact that people realized that we were monitoring and paying attention and providing different strategies for student discipline yeah our table was looking at K8 proficiency rates and we noticed that for ELA we are very close to pre-pandemic numbers with math just slightly below that all right one more facilitator Liz Melissa no um so our table was looking at high school proficiency rate and one of the
things that came up was we looked at where we were pre pandemic and wondering why we haven't rebounded back to our prepandemic numbers and thinking about um should there be more resources around mental health for our kids and families good wondering all right so now we're going to move to the second round during the second round your facilitator is going to talk to you about some of the strategies we are currently using to address the data that you see in front of you so facilitators you will have a few minutes to go over the strategies and then the table will be able to ask you any clarifying questions about what you have said what you've shared and then also help you think through any additional strategies I think might be effective for this data so
again you'll have about 8 minutes to share strategies ask clarifying questions and then get feedback about additional strategies all right I'm going to start the timer now our second [Music] to e instruction pull from like like our math is really good like that performance matters has great things to pull from but yell is is not there and so a would there be something that help looks like four current fourth graders where where in their math are they proficient and is there a fall off at some point between you know elementary math that they're doing to like oh my God it turns into high school math so like how are these kids doing in fourth grade versus where are they now like and and is there is this a CO tale that we're witnessing here that
like literally these kids have to just say Sorry Charlie you had here so you're going to have impact for the rest of your you know and are these fourth graders when these current fourth graders get up the freshman year are they potentially going to be in the 40 50% or achieving where they are now and and how do we how do we intervene in there if they are performing High how do we keep them performing High when all right facilitators this time share either a clarifying question that someone at your table ask or a strategy they share that might help us with this particular data set we have some teachers over here so I heard some good conversation okay get ready so we were looking at on treor graduation and we had a lot of
questions around how our strategies were penetrating down to the lower grade so both the ninth graders what we're doing to get them on track but also eighth grade seventh graders how we're making sure we're sending prepared students into high school to limit how kids getting off track from the start a you got one so we had a great clarifying question around how we use our interventions um to make sure that students who are currently not proficient in math are assisted appropriately and then also a clarifying question on how we are tracking our students moving backwards to see where we have the dips and what we're doing to close those gaps so that when we get to high school we both exceed maintain and exceed where they are when they're younger so we had some great
recommendations at this table as we looked at the uh Co bounce back especially in ela and attributing that to the district has been really focused on Ela and how can we build on that momentum one of the ideas was what does it look like to have a district writing strategy and to focus on the writing part to help the students with that writing piece of the state assessments and then also um as we're looking at adopting a new curriculum making sure it's one that has strong pre and post assessments to help teachers with the data analysis piece thank you good feedback so we had the attendance rates and chronic absentee metric by subgroups and so really great ideas here related to this is a really a hard one um and understanding um lots of different
uh influences that go into it uh but what was shared from experiences and and thinking through is just the importance of relationships and relationships matter particularly with an adult at school and so um shared lots of different even just like just finding a counselor to come in and have coffee in the morning in high school or just someone to touch Bas is really an important metric because that might be the deciding factor of why you want to get out of bed and go see an adult so really talk through some ideas around that anyone else want to share y first I want to sh that we have future teachers here at our table with us so we want to recognize them for being here but they shared they shared a really important um P piggyback
on for Megan said is that the qualitative data that we receive from the student of iry council is just as important as the quantitative data they're receiving and so they know early on to listen to student voice and to engage them in conversations in the classroom all right good feedback thank you for sharing those strategies so all of these slides that we looked at plus those that we were not looking at today are can all be found um in board docs in our board agenda for today um but just in summary for our conversation for today we are seeing some positive Trends in some of our data for some of our core measures there are other core measures where our data is stagnant and you saw that as you were looking at the data especially
across after 2020 and Beyond um we have more work to do to address the differences in performance attendance and suspensions for the students who make up our subgroups that is recognizable when you look at our data especially across subgroups we are currently working on the strategies that we will use over the next few years as a as an leadership team to build those out for each core measure and then we'll share one more board presentation this school year on cmsd student outcomes as identified by the CEO goals if you have addition comments questions or suggestions for strategies you can provide feedback through let's talk the QR code is there you can also get to let's talk on our district website so there are opportunities for you to continue to engage with us around the data
that you see and offering any other additional comments questions or suggestions questions from the board at this time any questions yes please thank you um so board dos for anyone viewing at home I know I'm sure lots of people are here at the end of the meeting but if anyone's viewing the recording are at clevelandmetroschools.org boo and um you go to the board agenda and you go to the meeting that you want to see and then you can view um the documents from today there under the core measures presentation thank you all right thank you you can go back to your SKS okay the chair will now entertain a motion to adopt and just a thank you Dr Florence and thank you to all the facilitators and the community members who participated in the um

business keep in mind is that these are actually generating I'm very very proud of them um not even just from like robotics some of it's just been even on like a social and communication level because they have to speak to people they have to get you know judges are going to question them we're drilling them on questions about how the robot works and to watch them start to gain the confidence because they know the answers it's having that confidence to answer and so watching them build that and then you know making the decisions um you know the mentors are there to help guide and support them but they're ultimately making the decisions on the robots just turn it over would that be easier well this may be a rookie team they have experienced members Daniela
spent the last two years on on the Davis robotics team they play second at State last year and she hopes to bring home a trophy with her new team I decide to join a new team because it was all girls team and I really like to get what I know my knowledge and to other teams that I really need because um they are Rook teams so I want to like give my what I experienced the last two years to them they are not the only ones new to the competition this is the first year Garrett Morgan School of Engineering and Innovation is competing as well bringing a total number of Robotics teams from cmsd to seven many of these students spend their time at the Great Lake Science Center after school to work on their
robots Kevin is the team captain for Garrett Morgan he believes this is an excellent hands-on experience for any one interested in joining the stem field luckily we have mentors and they are free to help you out uh cuz we do had we do have our ups and downs and we do make mistakes I actually um I want to focus more on my education now cuz how I see how they already know the stuff and they like second nature for them and I just want to have that same experience both teams enjoy working with professionals and learning skills that they can use beyond the competition we've also had the ability to be put into leadership positions that I feel will be very beneficial for our future especially since most of the team H plan on pursuing
a career in the stem field um so that's been really great really fun being able to have the ability to supervise and given a sense of responsibility at our age the name of this and then status light and it'll probably give us that and while you two are doing that let me and up we are gathered here today to not only get insight on our candidates but to also get um their responses pertaining to the questions that our peers do have today just before Ohio's primary election students from Civics 2.0 invited candidates for the office of kyoga County prosecutor to colinwood high school for a conversation County prosecutor has a more effect on your everyday life than the president ever will um the Supreme Court of the United States ever will they have a more
effect once again on your everyday life than they ever will so it's so great to see the kids realize that realize the importance and getting to talk to the candidates and express their concerns within kyoga County incumbent prosecutor Michael omalie and his opponent Matthew an answered questions prepared by the students from several different high schools on topics incl including gun violence the prosecution of teens and victims rights do either of you have plans to address the racial dispar disparities in the kyoga county legal system and if so how will the plan be executed what measures will you take to provide people of all Races a chance of Justice what would the county Prosecutor Office do to rehabilitate the youth to prevent re-entry into the justice system early intervention is the key to making sure that
um the children do not come back into the uh into the justice system under my leadership working with the juvenile court judges we started an early intervention Center that on the front end evaluates juveniles who come before the court Owen a sophomore at Cleveland School of Science in medicine served as the moderator of this conversation with the candidates so the questions they were very um I would say personal you know they they didn't they didn't hold back the candidates shared with the student the key role a prosecutor plays in the community and these firsttime voters appreciate their cander and thoughtfulness when answering their questions I really appreciated the transparency that the uh but living it get out and vote yeah go ahead Cleveland except that doesn't even make sense if Mel had locked the keys
in a car during lunch these students at Facing History new Tech High School are providing nourishment for their minds Oak Ridge is probably the safest neighborhood in Atlanta they are reading dear Martin by Nick Stone it's power in the book and the book has a a ton of good information about real world problems the book is about a traffic stop that turns violent with police officers and how a young black teen grapples with racism and what it means for his future while writing letters to Dr Martin Luther King Jr the students read some chapters together and then discuss during this lunchtime book club I don't disagree with everything he's doing like you know I have a heart like I will help too the goal is for them to break down each chapter to see how
they see themselves in each chapter chapter with Justice and um how they can relate so here at face in history we like to bring and connect the outside world into the things that they're reading here inside of the school dear Martin is on the band reading list in some school districts it is a violation of our intellectual freedom and allowing students to think critically and decide what they would like to read but books are not banned here at cmsd principal Melissa swedo wanted her students to read a couple of ban books this school year students should have opportunities and access to materials that they want to read that they we shouldn't keep them from it um they they are given materials to read in their English classes and everything but they should have the opportunity
to find out more about their world and um and themselves by having access to a variety of different books and we shouldn't keep that away from them the students could choose from dear Martin and the hill climb an inaugural poem for the country by Amanda Gorman that's the poem she read at President Joe Biden's inauguration some students are stunned this book is banned it's crazy I don't understand why is it banned all it does is just explain like you know like what we should really be doing as people and not you know like not liking people just because of whatever is going on or they're different from us to hear that they were not allowed to read that book they wanted to read it even more it just gave them more of a edge like
oh they're saying why like why can't I read this book what is this book going to tell me that the world don't want me to know I think people of higher power are afraid of Truth in reality and they're afraid other people are going to be educated about reality um I think they're a faith that we'll be educated in a way that will help the world realize the wrongdoing exuse my language these students are not only reading baned books but learning why those in positions of power may not want others to read them they are also learning how to find their voice and to advocate for themselves say a whole L there is a line in this book I believe it says um because to put our future first we must first set our differences
aside and difference scares a lot of people it's scary to because it's different and I think if people learned more about what's so different they wouldn't be as scared but that's the thing like people need fear to stay in power because we know to put our future first we must first put our differences aside we lay down on our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another we seek harm to none and harmony for all Let The Globe if nothing else say this is true ready 1 2 3 4 Valeria starts her day with movement which she says is her favorite part of the morning I feel f focused feel focused she and her classmates focus by breathing and out stretching and lifting weighted objects after that they take a walk let's
go let go around Wilbur Wright prek through 8 school to find landmarks they created to find certain rooms entrance good job Julian the exercises take about 20 minutes each day and will have a lasting effect I've seen like it's almost best when we start our day with it because I have students who are Wiggly and um starting our day with movement helps them come back in they're focused they're centered identifying our emotions through this and how it helps our emotions and making those connections upright up Mrs Bert says this is a significant accomplishment for the students I have third grade fourth grade fifth grade I actually have a second grader this year too um and I will get them for typically a threeyear span and I teach students who have um significant cognitive disabilities and
other varying abilities and they have varying strengths as well in order to incorporate movement into the students day Mrs Bert say she had to call in her Village I think the biggest part is it can be intimidating to introduce a new program to even begin the courageous Pacers program both the Educators and Scholars had to take a step out on faith so the objective of courageous Pacers is to challenge students to walk 100 miles and lift 10,000 pounds now we modified those for the particular class that you saw um to make it attainable for them and uh the goal is to integrate uh healthy uh attitudes and healthy practices and habits with students to get the students engaged they first got them involved in making the map talked about symbols we talked about location so
those were kind of our big vocab words and then the students um decided how to act out a location so like the cafeteria or um the music room they were clapping and I brought in a camera and a green screen and lights and reflectors and they acted out the different locations in the schools and chose a color that represented those places as well entrance and tweak the program to accommodate any limitations I observed the class as they first started and we determined that some of the exercises could be changed a little bit you may have noticed instead of doing the tricep extension this way we just had one of the bottles and we did it that way Mrs Bert says first some students were relunctant but eventually they came around a lot of the students
who are resistance are now leaders in the program and are helping me count our reps are standing up in front of their peers and leading probably the only time in the day that they're leading throughout the day and it's just wonderful to see do you like the shoulder press bicep C shoulder press good job high five DJ all right buddy and just like the school's motto the Educators watch the students soar as they Pace courageously around the halls of Wilbur Wright with each step they are learning life skills and habits that they can use at school and at home I love to see them working together I love to see them um bonding with their peers and the students are becoming more confident how do I look you look great you look great to try
new things like answer questions for the story what's interesting about the school that you like to see well the I see about the downstairs we go downstairs and then who's our principal that we see sometimes I see M Ain I see Mr Atkins mm I like it like um my CR new good job Julian these courageous Pacers are learning skills that will set them up for success with their feet firmly planted on the ground jul you got this you got this julan we did it we're investing in them and we're showing them that we know that they have what it takes to go to the next level and we want to make sure that we put all the tools that we can into their toolbox to make sure that they can go to that next
level on up not only on the field but as a whole person right to the second baseman that's it game is over Lincoln West wins 7 four it's been an amazing experience chest takes me out from all my stress or any problems that I have it it's just fun you know I like playing chess excellent where he pulls back and then he leaps with that pushes off with that one foot that's called a grab start three pointer up oh wow so today is about y'all having fun showcasing your skills um being good teammates communicating with one another don't be afraid to make a mistake just cuz the bright lights on with the camera all right do your thing do what you've been doing how long you'all been playing basketball long time right little kids you're
well [Music] equipped 3 2 1 go it's being in the arena you know you know being putting yourself out there and just performing Under Pressure those are important [Applause] skills there a lot of people that is is uh rooting for us as a team to bring history back to Cleveland you understand we have no doubt we've been in this thing for 11 to 12 months you know so we just got to go and finish it out steps up throwing coverage is good oh what a crab going up to get it and coming down with it is De Maran Whitten the tight end words really can't explain how I feel you know I'm just thankful that we could bring something to the city of Cleveland and to our communities to our school system so many people
have tried it for so many [Music] years [Music] [Applause] [Music] nah [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] going [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] n [Music] [Applause] when robotics teams from several different states come here to the Wolstein Center to compete in the first robotics Buckeye Regional cmsc will have two new teams one from Garrett Morgan School of Engineering and Innovation and a districtwide all girls team these young ladies say they are ready to show their girl power girls can do anything yeah anything a man can do a girl can do as well a group of young ladies from six different District high schools joined the first cmsd all girls robotics team they are using their skills and passion to build and operate this robot this rookie team named lady voltage aims to prove that girls can

plans to address the racial disparity disparities in the kyoga county legal system and if so how will the plan be executed what measures will you take to provide people of all Races a chance of Justice what would the county Prosecutor Office do to rehabilitate the youth to prevent reentry into the justice system early intervention is the key to making sure that um the children do do not come back into the uh into the justice system under my leadership working with the juvenile court judges we started an early intervention Center that on the front end evaluates juveniles who come before the court Owen a sophomore at Cleveland School of science and medicine served as the moderator of this conversation with the candidates so the questions they were very um I would say personal you know they
they didn't they didn't hold back the candidates shared with the students the key role a prosecutor plays in the community and these firsttime voters appreciated their cander and thoughtfulness when answering their questions I really appreciated the transparency that the uh questions provided it really gave me an understanding of how the candidates feel about certain issues that are really important for the public to understand this event a prime example of how these Civics 2.0 students are making sure their voices are heard and not only learning about democracy but living it get out and vote yeah go ahead Cleveland except that doesn't even make sense if Mel had locked the keys in the car during lunch these students at Facing History new Tech High School are providing nourishment for their minds Oak Ridge is probably the safest

as scared but that's the thing like people need fear to stay in power because we know to put our future first we must first put our differences aside we lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another we seek harm to none and harmony for all Let The Globe if nothing else say this is true ready 1 2 3 4 Valeria starts her day with movement which she says is her favorite part of the morning I feel focused feel focused she and her classmates focus by breathing and out stretching and lifting weighted objects after that they take a walk let's go let's go around Wilbur Wright prek through 8 school to find landmarks they created to find certain rooms M good J julan the exercises take about 20 minutes each
day and will have a lasting effect I've seen like it's almost best when we start our day with it because I have students who are Wiggly and um starting our day with movement helps them come back in they're focused they're centered identifying our emotions through this and how it helps our emotions and making those connections upright up Mrs Bert says this is a significant accomplishment for the students I have third grade fourth grade fifth grade I actually have a second grader this year too um and I will get them for typically a three-year span and I teach students who have um significant cognitive disabilities and other varying abilities and they have varying strengths as well in order to incorporate movement into the students day Mrs Bert said she had to call in her Village I
think the biggest part is it can be intimidating to introduce a new program to even begin the courageous Pacers program both the Educators and Scholars had to take a step out on faith so the objective of courageous Pacers is to challenge students to walk 100 miles and lift 10,000 pounds now we modified those for the particular class that you saw um to make it attainable for them and uh the goal is to integrate uh healthy uh attitudes and healthy practices and habits with students to get the students engaged they first got them involved in making the map talked about symbols we talked about location so those were kind of our big vocab words and then the students um decided how to act out a location so like the cafeteria or um the music room they
were clapping and I brought in a camera and a green screen and lights and reflectors and they acted out the different locations in the schools and chose a color that represented those places as well entr and tweak the program to accommodate any limitations I observed the class as they first started and we determined that some of the exercises could be changed a little bit you may have noticed instead of doing the tricep extension this way we just had one of the bottles and we did it that way Mrs Bert says first some students were relunctant but eventually they came around a lot of the students who are resistance are now leaders in the program and are helping me count our reps are standing up in front of their peers and leading probably the only time
in the day that they're leading throughout the day and it's just wonderful to see do you like the shoulder press bicep curl shoulder press good job high five DJ all right and just like the school's motto the Educators watch the students soar as they Pace courageously around the halls of Wilber wri with each step they are learning life skills and habits that they can use at school and at home I love to see them working together I love to see them um bonding with their peers and the students are becoming more confident how do I look you look great you look great to try new things like answer questions for the story what's interesting about the school that you like to see well the I see about to downstairs we go downstairs and then who's
our principal that we see sometimes I see is a I see Mr Atkins I like it like um my crass new good job Julian these courageous Pacers are learning skills that will set them up for success with their feet firmly planted on the ground you got this you got this julan we did it where investing in them and we're showing them that we know that they have what it takes to go to the next level and we want to make sure that we put all the tools that we can into their toolbox to make sure that they can go to that next level on up not only on the field but as a whole person right to the second baseman that's it game is over Lincoln West wins 7 to four it's been an amazing
experience chest takes me out from all my stress or any problems that I have it it's just fun you know I like playing chess excellent where he pulls back and then he leaps with that pushes off with that one foot that's called a grab start three-pointer up oh wow so today today is about y'all having fun showcasing your skills um being good teammates communicating with one another don't be afraid to make a mistake just cuz the bright lights on with the camera all right do your thing do what you've been doing how long you'all been playing basketball long time right little kids you're well [Music] equipped 3 2 1 go it's being in the arena you know you know being putting yourself out there and just performing Under Pressure those are important [Applause] skills there
a lot of people that is is uh rooting for us as a team to bring history back to Cleveland you understand we have no doubt we've been in this thing for 11 to 12 months you know so we just got to go and finish it out steps up throwing coverage is good oh what a crap going up to get it and coming down with it is De Maran Whitten the tight end words really can explain how I feel you know I'm just thankful that we can bring something to the city of Cleveland and to our communities to our school syst system so many people have tried it for so many [Music] years [Music] [Applause] [Music] a [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] want [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] d [Music] [Applause] when robotics teams from
several different states come here to the Wolstein Center to compete in the first robotics Buckeye Regional cmsc will have two new teams one from Garrett Morgan School of Engineering and Innovation and a districtwide all girls team these young ladies say they are ready to show their girl power girls can do anything yeah anything a man can do a girl can do as well a group of young ladies from six different District high schools joined the first cmsd all girls robotics team they are using their skills and P passion to build and operate this robot this rookie team named lady voltage aims to prove that girls can build robots just as well as any boy dominated team I wanted to join the All Girls robotics team because it seemed like a very open and welcoming group
to join and I was very excited to gain experience and knowledge with my peers you all right pop it out lady voltage has mentors to guide them in all aspects of the process including electrical mechanical and business in mind is that these are actually generating I'm very very proud of them um not even just from like robotics some of it's just been even on like a social and communication level because they have to speak to people they have to get you know judges are going to question them we're drilling them on questions about how they're works and to watch them start to gain the confidence because they know the answers it's having that confidence to answer and so watching them build that and then you know making the decisions um you know the mentors are
there to help guide and support them but they're ultimately making the decisions on the robots just turn it over well this may be a rookie team they have experienced members danela spent the last two years on the Davis robotics team they play second at State last year and she hopes to bring home a trophy with her new team I decide to join a new team because it was all girls team and I really like to give what I know my knowledge to other teams that really need because um they are rookie teams so I want to like give my what I experienced the last two years to them they are not the only ones new to the competition this is the first year Garrett Morgan School of Engineering and Innovation is competing as well bringing
a total number of Robotics teams from cmsd to S many of these students spend their time at the Great Lake Science Center after school to work on their robots Kevin is the team captain for Garrett Morgan he believes this is an excellent hands-on experience for anyone interested in joining the stem field luckily we have mentors and they are free to help you out uh cuz we do have we do have our ups and downs and we do make mistakes I actually um I want to focus more on my education now cuz how I see how they already know the stuff and they like second nature for them and I just want to have that same experience both teams enjoy working with professionals and learning skills that they can use used beyond the competition we've also
had the ability to be put into leadership positions that I feel will be very beneficial for our future especially since most of the team H plan on pursuing a career in the stem field um so that's been really great really fun being able to have the ability to supervise and given a sense of responsibility at our age the name of this and then status L and it'll probably give us that and while you two are doing that let me and we are gathered here today to not only get insight on our candidates but to also get um their responses pertaining to the questions that our peers do have today just before Ohio's primary election students from Civics 2.0 invited candidates for the office of kyoga County prosecutor to colinwood high school for a conversation County
prosecutor has a more effect on your everyday life than the president ever will um the Supreme Court of the United States ever will they have a more effect once again on your everyday life than they ever will so it's so great to see the kids realize that realize the importance in getting to talk to the candidates and express their concerns within kyoga County incumbent prosecutor Michael om manal and his opponent Matthew an answered questions prepared by the students from several different high schools on topics including gun violence the prosecution of teens and victims rights do either of you have plans to address the racial dispar disparities in the kyoga county legal system and if so how will the plan be executed what measures will you take to provide people of all Races a chance of
Justice what would the county Prosecutor Office do to rehabilitate the youth to prevent reentry into the justice system early intervention is the key to making sure that um the children do not come back into the uh into the justice system under my leadership working with the juvenile court judges we started an early intervention Center that on the front end evaluates juveniles who come before the court Owen a sophomore at Cleveland School of science and medicine served as the moderator of this conversation with the candidates so the questions they were very um I would say personal you know they they didn't they didn't hold back the candidates shared with the students the key role a prosecutor plays in the community and these firsttime voters appreciated their cander and thoughtfulness when answering their questions I really appreciated
the transparency that the uh questions provided it really gave me an understanding of how the candidates feel about certain issues that are really important for the public to understand this event a prime example of how these Civics 2.0 students are making sure their voices are heard and not only learning about democracy but living it get out and vote yeah go ahead Cleveland except that doesn't even make sense if Mel had locked the keys in the car during lunch these students at Facing History new Tech High School are providing nourishment for their minds Oak Ridge is probably the safest neighborhood in Atlanta they are reading dear Martin by Nick Stone it's power in the book and the book has a a ton of good information about real world problems the book is about a traffic stop
that turns violent with police officers and how a young black teen grapples with racism and what it means for his future while writing letters to Dr Martin Luther King Jr the students read some chapters together and then discuss during this lunchtime book club I don't disagree with everything he's doing like you know I have a heart like I would help too the goal is for them to break down each chapter to see how they see themselves in each chapter chapter with Justice and um how they can relate so here at face in history we like to bring and connect the outside world into the things that they're reading here inside of the school dear Martin is on the band reading list in some school districts it is a violation of our intellectual freedom and allowing
students to think critically and decide what they would like to read but books are not banned here at cmsd principal Melissa swedo wanted her students to read a couple of ban books this school year students should have opportunities and access to materials that they want to read that they we shouldn't keep them from it um they they are given materials to read in their English classes and everything but they should have the opportunity to find out more about their world and um themselves by having access to a variety of different books and we shouldn't keep that away from them the students could choose from dear Martin and the hill we climb an inaugural poem for the country by Amanda Gorman that's the poem she read at President Joe Biden's inauguration some students are stunned this
book is banned it's crazy I don't understand why is it banned all it does is just explain like you know like what we should really be doing as people and not you know like not liking people just because of whatever is going on or they're different from us to hear that they were not allowed to read that book they wanted to read it even more it just gave them more of a edge like oh they're saying why like why can I read this book what is this book going to tell me that the world don't want me to know I think people of higher power are afraid of truth and reality and they're afraid other people are going to be educated about reality um I think they're AF faith that we'll be educated in a
way that will help the world realize the wrongdoings language these students are not only reading baned books but learning why those in positions of power may not want others to read them they are also learning how to find their voice and to advocate for themselves Miss F say a whole lot there is a line in this book I believe it says um because to put our future first we must first set our differences aside and difference scares a lot of people it's scary to because it's different and I think if people learned more about what's so different they wouldn't be as scared but that's the thing like people need fear to stay in power because we know to put our future first we must first put our differences aside we lay down our arms so
we can reach out our arms to one another we seek harm to none and harmony for all Let The Globe if nothing else say this is true ready 1 2 3 Valeria starts her day with movement which she says is her favorite part of the morning I feel focused feel focused she and her classmates focus by breathing and out stretching and lifting weighted objects after that they take a walk let's go let's go around Wilbur Wright prek through 8 school to find landmarks they created it to find certain rooms main entrance good J julan the exercises take a about 20 minutes each day and will have a lasting effect I've seen like it's almost best when we start our day with it because I have students who are Wiggly and um starting our day with
movement helps them come back in they're focused they're centered identifying our emotions through this and how it helps our emotions and making those connections upright up Mrs Bert says this is a significant accomplishment for the students so I have third grade fourth grade fifth grade have a second grader this year too um and I will get them for typically a threeyear span and I teach students who have um significant cognitive disabilities and other varying abilities and they have varying strengths as well in order to incorporate movement into the students day Mrs Bert says she had to call in her Village I think the biggest part is it can be intimidating to introduce a new program to even begin the courageous Pacers program both the Educators and Scholars had to take a step out on faith

as well and tweak the program to accommodate any limitations I observe the class as they first started and we determined that some of the exercises could be changed a little bit you may have noticed instead of doing the tricep extension this way we just had one of the bottles and we did it that way Mrs Bert says first some students were reluctant but eventually they came around a lot of the students who are resistance are now leaders in the program and our helping me count our reps our standing up in front of their peers and leading probably the only time in the day that they're leading throughout the day and it's just wonderful to see do you like the shoulder press bicep curl shoulder press good job high five TJ all right buddy and just
