001hello west chicago this is uh nick calteroni i'm a social studies teacher i've been here for 20 years i've been thinking a lot about chess lately i've been thinking a lot about chess lately in terms of everything we're going through and i think it works to help explain a lot of what we're facing right now when i when i think about chess i think about really four concepts i think about possibility i think about preparation i think about beauty and i also think about improvement when i think about possibility chess is near infinite in its possibilities there are 10 to 120 different possibilities in terms of how a chess game can play out that is literally more than there are atoms in the universe the potentialities are near infinite but because they're not quite infinite

002when we think about chess that way then we have to think about preparation in anything we do anything we want to be good at we have to be prepared we have to think through possibilities a move that i make early in the game is going to pay dividends in the long game it's going to pay dividends in the end game and we have to think about that not just in chess but in everything we do the causal connections of our actions prior will play out down the road and that patient preparation makes a difference and that's where the beauty of the game emerges it comes through that preparation the beauty can only come after at least for me in the way i approach the game it can only come after i've prepared and after i've

003practiced and then finally and probably the reason i love chess the most is the never ending rabbit hole of improvement it never stops the more you play the more you have to learn the better you get the higher you can achieve and it's like anything else we do the more time and patience and practice we put into things the better off we get at them so i know that we are are facing some real challenges right now well there's nothing more challenging than trying to become good at just and with enough patience and resilience we can realize the possibilities the preparation the beauty and yes even the improvement
