e e e and Julie would you mind calling the RO please Cara Caston here Ken Dawson here CHR esposa here Terry pavich here and Don rener here and Jan hun here and Nala M here thank you having a quorum let's stand for the Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all all right Hank I'll turn it over to you for student recognitions all right and I will turn it over to Arwin because we have a bunch from South High this evening good evening everyone I'm so happy to be um back this month celebrating student recognitions I was just getting a chance to share this is my most favorite part

of my job is celebrating the success of our students so thank than you again for allowing us the opportunity to do this um we're going to start tonight um with ID DEA which is Illinois design Educators Association you can see that we had students placed both first and second in this highly competitive competition so to introduce and explain the success of Zach and Alex I'm going to introduce Mark mulinari uh thank you for having us once again um I think this is an awesome opportunity for our our students to um be recognized and um I have the opportunity to watch Stu athletes compete but I think watching students compete in academic competitions is they're typically not some of your best athletes that you have but they really you see their competitive juices coming out and

so Zach and Alex you guys can come on up real quick um I've known Alex since he was been in like fifth grade and uh I live right next to his grandma so I knew he was going to be taking my classes at some point and Zach is a very bright young man and so um I'll let those those two talk talk about the competition a little bit but there was a regional there's 19 regionals they took first and second out of cood and then the top two from those 19 regionals compete at Illinois State and they got they were able to take first and second out of there so go ahead wow very good um hello I'm Alex um I'm a senior at South I'm planning on going to uh Huntsville Alabama next year

uh to make major in Aerospace and uh I've been architecture has been a major part of my life like I've I've loved it I've thought I was going to go into it from when I was little I was always super interested and honestly I've been struggling to choose between Aerospace and architecture and you know mon Ari's class has really helped me choose and it's been a really amazing time competing in skills and idea um the opportunities are just absolutely amazing just some wonderful people my name is Zach and I'm also senior at South I'm going to University of Illinois at Urbana champagne next year to go into civil engineering and I'd also like to thank Mr nari for this great opportunity and great class of architecture it's been great to explore career options before you

actually delve into them into the real world and just helps to make sure that I'm prepared for whatever Next Step I'm taking in life so you can see I talked both of them into not going in our the profound impact that I have but uh Zach didn't tell anybody but uh Zach is going tuition free to University of Alabama so or Illinois so it's a pretty big [Applause] accom before they run away wait wait wait um our uh villages got in on the ACT for Zach and Alex um I have something from the village of Woodridge and then Downer's Grove it's production it's on the way so I'll turn those over to you when they come in Mr Molinari so for uh for Zach here I have a proclamation from the village of Woodridge that

uh recognizes that Zach won first place at the Ida championship in the category of 3D architectural modeling uh would not have been possible without the exceptional sponsorship of Mr Molinari um says that Zach's uh achievements highlight the commitment spirit and pride of the Woodridge community and uh mayor Cunningham has declared today Monday May 6th as Zach Muka day Alex as a second place finisher Woodridge recognized you as well for your second place finishing at Ida in the category of 3D architectural modeling uh um also recognizes Mr Molinari uh thanks uh everybody else that's involved in representing uh this program and the mayor has also declared today as Alex burck [Applause] Day could you uh gentlemen just uh describe a little bit about your projects that were submitted for uh this competition all right um so

the projects are normally like you're given like so it's time based and so you're given like a a template kind of like an idea of what you're supposed to do they'll give you like a rough idea so in this one it was like a museum like a car Volkswagen Museum and so it gave you like a really rough outline of like the different um details it needs and stuff and you kind of have to work like around that and try to like like they'll give you like a floor plan but you kind of have to like incorporate everything that inside of it and stuff and so you need to know a lot of the like software um a lot of small features that normally you don't you use and stuff and so once you obviously

once you put it all together it will I mean it's just whoever can do it better but it wasn't something that you prepare prepared ahead of time it was it was something on the spot yeah wow ni they an hour and a half they're giv The Prompt they have an hour and a half to do a floor plan elevation in a couple 3D views wow wow that's a lot a lot of pressure sounds like and congratulations Mr Mullen Ari one of the best things about workplace learning is helping students understand what not to spend their next four years doing and their money on job well done appreciate [Applause] it next up we're going to celebrate our ihsa short film contest team they play sixth at the ihsa state meet um and I'm going to have

will Elliot come up and speak on behalf of the team um Mr Blum is not here tonight he's homesick so hi Mr Blum if you're watching um and will is going to come uh represent the team and talk about short film hello the board I hope you guys are having an amazing day uh for those of you who do not know me my name is will Elliott and I'm a director of editorial for the ihsa short film I also did sound design and I also did a ton of other little tiny bits and details before I start and start talking about the ihsa short film there are a few people that I want to recognize that are here that help the process and help make the short film a short film and not a long

film so we have uh the director of writing Nick Sadowski please stand of Applause we have our production manager uh Brianna Zigler and then we had this fantastic lighting person come in and help operate the lights in the studio theater uh Nick gamsky can you please stand nick uh you're coloring uh other Nick blue nick uh you're short you got complimented on the color choices at state by a em neon so congratulations for that but the significance of IHS short film we played six in the state which is I believe the first time that we podiumed on the actual ihsa Podium Podium which is a huge achievement and in order to have this outlet for students is really important because not a lot of schools have Outlets of creativity where students like me who are

interested in film and television and everything can really Express themselves our short film story was taken from the mind of Nick and his struggles with accepting that the goals that he placed freshman year weren't really the goals that he completed senior year which is a struggle which a load of high schoolers face and a load of people come to terms with I wanted to go to state for swimming and as you can see now I'm not a swimmer anymore but that's okay because we all change and we all morph ourselves into beautiful wonderful people and being able to tell this story at a very very prestigious event and get feedback from Emmy nominees people who work in the business people who drive to make film film that is something that I can remember for the

rest of my life but also something that I can remember for the rest of my life is that I got to share this moment with my role model yeah my dad drove all the way up from the middle of nowhere down SC grr to come see my film and it was a beautiful experience because when I was little I used to sit in his office chair and I would play around with his coloring board and I would say I want to be you someday and then my dad was like do you want to rethink that decision but now I got accepted into his aler Mo Southern Illinois ghost Tois and the fact that I was able to share my short film with my father and to complete someone's goal of telling a story within the

span of a week yeah I just say push this back like two weeks we did this in a week so that's really impressive as well but I also want to thank the board members for allowing me to come up and speak allowing everyone to experience the film and allowing us to tell a little story that probably would not have been told without our director Chris Blum who is sick so thank you boor so [Applause] much you'll get us a link to that video so I can share with yes I can get it to everyone I will do that I can do that tonight all right so next slide so I'm excited about this one there are two um very high-profile Awards about ihsa State journalism and our blueprint so for our blueprint advisers Miss Long

Miss lore and Mr Andrea they are celebrating two significant Awards tonight they are celebrating our state champion Sebastian Blanco and our state champions will Elliott who you just met Grace Stapleton and Micah Olsen along with third place winner and two fifth place winners at the ihsa state competition and then they also received the the Golden Eagle Award from northern northern Illinois student press Association so I'm going to have Mur come up um she'll talk a little bit about both things and introduce our students hi thank you so much so like my students I'm sure some of you are like what is a journalism competition and what does it look like they were so confused but this is really exciting so essentially it's very close to what Mark was talking about they have an hour and

a half they get a prompt and they have to write something something and our journalism team plays third in state tons of schools all over Illinois come and it's such a PR like they did such a fantastic job and should be so proud and that doesn't even represent all the students that went up to State and made it to sectionals we also play first in sectionals so we are so proud of the commitment some of them spent hours upon hours training with the various coaches in order to get that achievement so will was once again going to come speak about the experience he was part of the uh what is it technically called broadcast TV I got no clue yeah it's they made like a little 90c video no it was longer than 90c they

made like a news video and they got first place so will Grace and Micah our state champion in TV news Sebastian got radio news Anthony uh Dante third place uh headline writing Sabrina Crowley who I don't think is here right now but she got uh fifth place newspaper design design and Maya Hamburg fifth place in copy editing will would you like to speak a little bit about the experience about being a part of the competitive journalism team and what it means to you yes I would love okay thank you hopefully you guys didn't miss me I'm back uh for those of you who maybe have forgotten my name is Will Elliot and I do I'm a freelancer for blueprint I do a ton of media stuff media is my life but it's time to talk

about ihsa journalism ihsa journalism was a very interesting experience as someone who went to a few journal or not journalism competitions a few ihsa competitions this was the real deal we were placed in a three-hour time Block in order to get stuff done which is very like real life you only have three hours to get a story get it working and then put it up or it's not news at all but it's not really about journalism it's about the stuff and the people and the friends and the experience I got to sit down in a Starbucks with people who I never thought I would sit down in a Starbucks in my life with and it was such an incredible moment and we were all supportive of everything every single one of us like even if

we got called up for a medal which you know medals are cool and all but friends are better it it was this loving supportive environment and even if we didn't get a medal we still loved each other we still told each other it's okay because you got here because you got to experience what it was like to be a real journalist and that's incredible journalism provides an outlet for our school that allows us as people and writers and future photographers and future you know writers and ramly experts to sit down and talk about something without the fear of being censored and having this great great great power to actually inform people about informative topics like I think one of the topics at state was canine units I didn't know a thing about can9 units until

I actually sat down and recognized the topic but there are a few people that I want to thank while I'm up here again um Mrs lore um M slong Mr Andrea who um apparently doesn't know about emails which is cool but but we also want to thank Mrs Martinez who is one of our biggest supporters our number one fan and of course readers like you who sit down share our stories encourage Us in the hallways in order to strive and keep doing what we're doing and most importantly the board for recognizing us for our achievements thank [Applause] you um yeah it's really and I'm glad I work for a district that really supports the journalism program we the next thing we were going to talk about is the Northern Illinois Scholastic press Association which is

a bunch of Illinois schools uh that come together and there's a competition but we also go to a conference and this is kind of a side bar one of the things we learn during the conference is not all school districts are supportive of their students newspapers they don't give them the funding they don't give them the support and we just feel so grateful that we get to help the students and let them pursue their passions with the support of all of you and you and Miss Martina so we're super excited about that and that helped Miss Long's journalism class who is in charge of the blueprint which is a print publication and an online publication get the golden eagle the golden eagle is like the best of the best so like all the newspapers in

Northern Illinois submit and this is like you did the best journalism it was the most ethical it was the most interesting it was the most entertaining it's a huge award and we're super proud of the students for getting it so like everybody in the classes in here we do have some people should you stand we'll have people stand why don't you stand if you're in Miss Long's advanced class and get some recognition for your awesome JM Sebastian Anthony uh Kate I know your name it's not your class these are not my student like this is not my class class can we can I clarify that please these are not students in my class but I am a co-sponsor does that make sense so like I know your name darling because you were on the bus

with me but what van Vana the photographer Vana and I actually don't know you Grace Grace thank you very much so they did a fantastic job and then there's obviously a ton of students who aren't here that also did congratulations I have a couple of recognitions uh for are State journalists so the this is from Village of Woodridge and I believe Downers Grove will be sending over these are in production as well so um this first one recognizes uh will Grace and Micah for winning first place at the state championship in the category of TV news at Normal Illinois uh recognizes uh miss alore Mr Andria and Miss Long uh as the sponsors and and uh has named today in honor of will Grace and Micah and then in recognition of Sebastian's work uh the

village Woodridge has recognized Sebastian in the category of radio news uh recognizes that he's been on the speech team since his freshman year and his competed in multiple speech categories throughout his time including radio speaking humorous duet acting dramatic duet acting Duo interpretation original comedy and radio news um recognizes the sponsors as well and his also name today is Sebastian Blanco day [Applause] congratulations and just congratulations again to Anthony Sabrina and Maya for your top placements too we're really proud of everyone so congratulations all right now we get to orchestrate photos so let's uh you can just decide who's going to come up and we'll kind of get board members around for a picture so we'll start in Reverse so why don't we have all of our golden eagle winners who are here come on

up whoever's representing come M you too please after you young are we just G be [Music] like where do you want us to go get out Terry and Chris are still coming up from the back too the all right right here one two three very good let parents take pictures before you run thank you all right thank you team come up and [Music] all figure out all right ready can you see me all right 3 two one 3 two one thank you all right parents get your wa wait Don't Run Away Let the get their photos sorry I don't know to zoom say journalism journalism fin I can help you zoom all right good all right so will can stay and we'll do short film all right for next picture my short film team one

two three two two my parents photo I forgot that congratulations let's bring up our Ida Ida it's much easier smaller group but no less than all right there we go Terry all right all right one two three say engineering engineering wait wait wait thank [Music] you all right all of our students that were recognized your family thanks for coming you're welcome to stick around for the public portion of the meeting but you're also welcome to thank you so much for us it's riveting I was wondering I was like I pulled up and I was like where's the parking that I was on the phone my yeah because there's a baseball game going on so um you know do you remember have she's in our daughter's grad isn't she the all right marn you're still up

with students perspectives like oh my gosh all right so um also tonight um we are recognizing as part of our formal student perspective presentations um our research Club so um their sponsor Michelle sacken is just going to wave and be the cheerleader so shout out um but I'm going to turn it over to Nala and our team who are going to talk about the work they did with research Club Nala would you like the clicker oh oo can to have the power oh power there you go mhm yeah if it goes backwards click the other one got it okay we have like a formal presentation like slides that we're about to pull up but just an introduction so we're the research Club um I'm the president this is Mara huk vice president I'm Taylor Mitchell

and then this is n no secretary vice president and then Nala you know her obviously she's the vice president so we planted a prairie on April 6th in like at the corner of norfol and Dunham um yeah we had a really good turnout a lot of people came to help and so we're kind of just going to do an overview of our planting day and our inspiration and stuff like that so yeah that's us um so our inspiration for planning our grounds people came to the research Club sponsors Mr Howard and miss staven and told us that they had a problem mowing this area because it is a detention Basin so there is some runoff that gets collected in there but it's not like enough that it gets full it's just always super muddy so

they always still have to mow it it's just more of a problem with like getting the like the mowers stuck and any Machinery they have down there gets stuck in the mud so that was our main inspiration or the concern that we had that started like us brainstorming what we were going to do with this area so we also talked about like urbanization and how that's led to a loss of pollinators and how we wanted to do something to increase the biodiversity of our campus um just because there's not a lot going on in this area it's just grass we wanted to do something to make it a little more beautiful so there are many benefits to this Prairie the first is that it will beautify our campus our campus does not have a lot

of plants or trees or that I know Miss Martinez is working with the arbor to plant more trees and stuff like that but right now we were focusing on increasing biodiversity and beautifying the campus with all the pretty flowers and things like that we also wanted to provide some more research opportunities to research club members but also to classrooms like the Apes classes and things like that it's always a valuable opportunity and there's lots of possibilities for advancement and we also wanted to reduce work for maintenance crew like Taylor previously mentioned because it was a muddy area and it was getting dangerous for them to keep going down there and Machinery was getting stuck so it was also like a safety hazard and we also said that we did a research on the positive impact

of prairies and it's a good space where people can connect in nature and we and there's many mental health positive mental health effects and yeah we just thought it was a great idea and a good project for research Club to take on so this is a picture of the seating planning that we have we ended up only doing half of the area that is shown here and the the watery part is more so on the left side um so it I mean it's it's wet on the whole detention Basin like on on the bottom but it's more so on the left side so we only ended up doing half the Prairie so it' be more accessible so people could actually get down there because if there was plants everywhere it would be kind of hard

to like go down there especially once they grow and the grasses get tall so we did the left side and at the top we had to focus on issues of visibility and so we did a short grass eonia mix which is the first one and there's a lot of pretty flowers and things like that but we made a custom mix so that the grasses wouldn't grow Too Tall and it wouldn't block any visibility for cars or and we wouldn't face any problems with that next we did a pollinator seed mix which would increase biodiversity and there's also a lot of pretty flowers but it's great for attracting bees and just wildlife in general which you know that's obviously a problem that our world is facing today so we thought why not and it's good for

um like things to study and stuff like that and then at the bottom we did a detention Basin seed mix which is really good for the wet soil that we have at the bottom of the Basin and it's going to soak up the water and the grasses will be a little bit taller but since it's at the bottom of the detention Basin we won't really run into any issues with visibility and so we met with seating experts we got different uh quotes and things like that but that we ended up going with Prairie Moon and these different seed mixes and yeah that's what worked best for us yes and then we had planting day so before before we get on to planting day we just wanted to say that this planning all this planning took

around four years so Taylor was actually the one who started this project like she was one of the people who was who realized this was a problem and then um she started her freshman year and then Mara and I came in our sophomore year to help out with the project and then we finally got to planting day which is which was April 6th and there we had a lot of people show up we had a lot of our me a lot of our research club members came so we kind of like a few weeks before we kind of warned them saying like Hey April 6th at 9:00 a.m. like be ready so then they all of them came and a lot of our parents came as well so here are a few pictures of like

what the planting looked like and how many people showed up and then there's a lot more pictures cuz we had a few photographers too like our moms like Mara and I's mom so if you need any more pictures or videos there's a lot of those and then we also had uh like a we wanted to provide snacks for our helpers too so we had a table full of a bunch of like cookies muffins hot chocolate water so that way they can be hydrated and with all this help throughout we actually finished in around an hour so with the best part of our group was everybody was willing to keep working so once they finished their side they were like what's next so that really helped our group with just around 20 people to finish in

an hour and then after that around a week later we kicked off our ribbon ribbon cutting ceremony on Earth Day itself so that way to celebrate our achievements and then also the people who helped out and we just got a we got our first ribbon cutting ceremony got a Taylor got a get the big scissors and then cut the middle of it so that was a good experience for all of us and then future work for the club so with this we still have like there's still a bunch of stuff we can do with the reconstructed Prairie right so with that we're thinking of making like a plaque with our names and who helped out with this so that way like we could also be recognized with years to come not just like driving past

and being like Oh look that Prairie that was me we want like a kind of like a proof so like on the right is it's not going to be that big but something like similarish to that and then we also were thinking of some like signage with QR codes so that way like once the plants start blossoming people can figure out or can see like oh this is what this mix is and this is what this mix is so it's everybody else can be more knowledgeable about it and then Pathways we were we were thinking about Pathways but that's like in the future aspect of it and then we also want more like history about the plants and why these plants are useful for today's day and then we also were thinking of a 24-hour

camera so we were actually like in the beginning of researching this we were talking to our head of the science department about this like if it was feasible and if we were allowed and she she seemed up for it but we still gotta go through that and then there's also the factor of like hopefully this does work but like in 5 years if it doesn't like grow then the research Club can have that to learn off of and see our research on that and be like okay this didn't work the first time let's try again so research Club there's a lot of opportunities for us to research with this reconstructed Prairie okay before I go on to the acknowledgements I'd also like to mention that we talked about incorporating it into like the classroom setting

so I know I talked with my AP environmental science teacher because we do a whole unit on soil and we talked about how Native species improve the soil chemistry so we were thinking about doing a research project on that and my AP environmental science is really passionate about soil so she said she'd be willing to help and there's just so many things that you can do with it and then going on to our acknowledgements we would really like to thank the people that showed up to help plant the Prairie we had a really good turnout which I don't know if we were expecting but it was definitely like a pleasant surprise and everyone had a great attitude no one probably wanted to be up at 9 or 8 on a Saturday morning digging in the

dirt but everyone had a great attitude so we just wanted to say thank you and then obviously thank you to miss sck laen and Mr Howard Mr Howard is not a sponsor of research Club anymore but he was our first three years or yeah um and he really helped us so even though he didn't get the end result he really helped us through the Dirty Work and the process and then obviously thank you to all of you for providing somewhere that we can plant this Prairie and just like better our knowledge and show our passion for science in a place where we can actually like demonstrate it and have Hands On Learning um and then thank you to them because they've been there for me and I recruited them because I was all alone after

my firstman year and I was like this is a lot I should probably get some help so yes thank you to you too and then thank you to miss clip and Miss Martinez Mr Reyes and Mr Davis because they helped us with the whole planning process process and ordering and all of the nitty-gritty stuff with the quotes So we just wanted to say thank [Applause] you can you describe the research Club it's you know a mission I guess and how many students are involved so we have a couple of projects every year we are sponsored by a couple of colleges and people come and help us organize projects so miss sth claven does a lot of that like getting in contact with people that provide projects but you can also bring any project that you

want I think right now we have like 16 people in a research Club yeah yeah yeah we have like 16 so I think we had three or four projects this year so some are sponsored by colleges and we get help from people at like I know we've had like Lewis University and Midwestern and places like that but our project was kind of just random like we just made it so it's really you can do anything you want with it you really get out of it what you put in into it but we're trying to grow the numbers right now so yeah we we recruited people we went to freshman access classes to try to get more people to join but we're small and mighty thank you yeah great [Applause] work you did well all right

next up Nalan giana's final reports oh M do you want to go first dgs is kind of on a roll right now I could okay so last time we talked was before SATs right so there's a lot happened from then to now and then also there's 5 days left for seniors but who's counting right and then so let's start off with right after sat week so we had our culture week and that was that was actually I thought it was really well like planned and there was a lot going on like there was different activities All Around The Commons like there was one I think on Friday was like a passport day so kids got to like they got a little passport and then they would go to like different sections around the commons and

each section was like a different Club so there was like Latino uh Latino student union and then there was Asian Student Union so then they got that little passport and they got to go to each club and they got a little stamp and then from that stamp you got put into a raffle and then you got a prize if you want right so then that was that was a really good experience so other people can go to each club and then learn more about that club to earn that stamp and then we also on Tuesday we had our food trucks and the food trucks was actually really cool like a lot of people were really excited about that like they didn't really expect like actual food trucks to come like obviously they saw the email

but they were like yeah so like but then it was good weather and they got to just try like a bunch of different foods that they've never tried before and I know like pricing was a huge thing on them but like still kids were still buying this food and sharing with their friends and also like I know the lemonade from one of the like Hawaiian food truck or some like was really popular that we like sold out the food truck like from the lemonade so like some periods were like I want lemonade and they were like never mind we can't get lemonade but that like that itself showed how popular those food trucks and everybody just like I could just see the food and smell the food throughout the day because people just like they

still got so much for the like they got a huge quantity for the price so like you could I like I had food too and all that okay and then after the week after we had our Earth Day celebration by research club and on that day we had a like we had our so we had one big activity which was during our lunch periods and that was to like kind of like planting a tree so like each each period that we got like okay sorry so we cut out little um leaves and then from there during the commons like especially us three we were there and we were like and other research club members we're like writing down what what we do to help the planet and then also their name and then we had

a different section where it was a huge poster and you would take that leaf and then we would tape it onto this tree so by the end of the lunch periods it was like a blossom tree so kind of to show like how we support the Earth and then with that we also had like a shoe collection day so any shoes that you weren't using you would donate them and then we donated to a local running shoe store so throughout that we had a bunch of like Earth Day Celebrations and we also passed out little seed packets with like a fun like Earth Day saying and then like fun seeds which was like broccoli peppers and then obviously flowers and then with that a few days or weeks a week after we had our prom

celebration for seniors and that was a good experience everybody seemed like they were having fun there was a lot fitted the to the theme of Paris and that was like really cool cuz there was a chocolate fountain and then a crepe station so it was a lot for others to look forward to with fireworks at the end of it and then access has been good like there's been a lot of like knowledge accesses which is like senior Focus Junior focus and then there's also the senior softball seniors versus staff softball tournament coming up today or not today this week and then there's also AP testing this week so that is a really stressful time but I know to like help everybody's nerves we also have our Mustang way celebration coming up this week cuz it's

the last time the seniors will have a block day right so during that time there's going to be a bunch of different activities like kind of to really set the summer mood up and hopefully that will be an exciting time just to keep those 5 days for seniors left and then those other days for junior senior Junior sophomores and freshmen so overall we've been having a good year and yeah this is the end of it and thank you so much for letting me speak and being here thanks um similar things going on at dgn right now um we have had something fun that just happened um was it was decision day for seniors which was super fun so what the College and Career Center did is um they moved it to May our decision National

decision day is May 1st they moved ours to May 2nd and um it was all the seniors in the College and Career Center and they we all got to like write down where we were going to college and then they had all this merch for us we got to take pictures there was like a little photo area it was super fun there was a lot of super fun stuff there um we had our senior awards ceremony and that's where all the seniors were able to get recognized we were able to receive scholarships which was awesome um and we were also we all a just celebrate our achievements together and it was really really great to do that and just be able to celebrate everything that we've done over the past four years now that it's

all coming to an end um our excess classes has also been very similar it's been a lot of surveys which is actually really nice because my counselor at least and I know I've been talking to my friends my friends counselors they've all done a really good job of making sure they're like hey you need to fill out this surway because of XYZ like this is really helpful for us and um I was talking to my sister who's a sophomore and she said that her those access sessions have been super informative for her and preparing her to be a junior my junior friend said that it's super helpful in preparing them to be a senior and um overall um prom was just this past weekend for us so it was two days ago on Saturday and

it was super fun um there was really really good communication with it um that was a a little bit of an issue last year with like communication around prom and like tables and like all this stuff it was very clear very concise this year if you messed up signing up for your table um our Student Activities would like pull you and they'd be like hey like you got to do this so that was actually very helpful cuz we were able to make sure everything is ironed out there was Zero confusion on the day of prom prom went awesome the band was super fun um the food was really good Bowling Brook was a good venue and um yeah it was um AP testing right now so just keeping an eye on where to be and

when at what time I just got all my emails today about when to leave class for all my AP tests so yeah just wrapping up the end of the year we have our senior Spotlight ceremony coming up and yeah thank you for letting me speak to you guys all right thanksg all right we have another uh starting superintendent reports now although it'll transitioning to other helpers this evening so we're going to bring up some representatives from t99 earlier this year they came and presented during student perspectives and the board was interested in learning more about the vocational training program at t99 so they're back to share a little bit with us so I'll let Carolina kick it off hi my name is Carolina shach thanks for having us back I'm the transition 99 program coordinator

um turn slide do you want the clicker sure you can have the power too power so joining us in person tonight is Trisha broy our transition 99 vational coordinator as well as aav Briggs and then we are also spotlighting Kyle and Israel and video and Jada was six so um TR is going to read her presentation so a big piece of t99 is getting our students students out working some of our students will be competitively employed some of them are volunteering um it's a big piece I talked about last time how it brings meeting to our life fills our day creates friendship so one of the pieces of our vocational program is connecting families with adult agency so after we get this asked a lot after our students leave t99 where do they go well

it depends on each student some of them will be working full-time and that will fill their day others go to an adult dat program um so we need to connect that with our families a big piece is career exploration just like the students that we heard from South our students as well have to try things and see what they like and don't like so we will have them at job training sites and they get to explore different experiences um we support them throughout the job finding process so that's creating a resume completing a job application going on an interview we just had our interview workshops Jill and uh Scott were in attendance interviewing students so they got to practice skill development so practicing those hard skills soft skills interviewing skills working with others um we

just want our students to be reach their full potential soft skill development I think a big piece that we work on is time management getting students like one of our students was stuck she wasn't going back to work after her break so how do you set a timer put your phone away like stay on task those types of things um um career planning so some of our students they might start at juel but the end goal is not Jewel um so kind of where you going setting goals how are we going to get there talking with managers getting feedback so they could move up maybe they were the card and then they became the cashier so things like that um our we have four job coaches so they provide on the job support and training

and Trisha as well is out job training um I've done some job training so what we all pitch in when needed just to make sure that the students have support and we do a nice job a lot of it is one to one and then in small groups two to three students um and then the last big piece is creating those Community Partnerships so we want our students employed or volunteering in our community because that's where they live and that's where they'll work so really networking meeting with businesses business owners um and really developing their Partners saying like hey look at our students these are some of the skills how can we help your job and how can you help our students um so this is kind of like the the spectrum of services so

micr business is things that we do at transition 99 in our building for students who may not be able to go out and work then the next part is volunteering so they're not getting paid but they are doing something meaningful in our community helping others then job training is where they're out with a job coach or Trisha our vocational coordinator in the community working and then the finally getting them competitively employed where they're paid by the employer for their time um so the micro business just a little advertisement we do custom mugs and custom stickers with using our Cricut we got a grant one time and bought all this stuff um we also make dog treats so if anyone has an animal feel free and then shredding so that's a big piece too um our

students love to shred and helps everyone out so if you need any of those things let us know um last time we were here Jerry smik talked about her entrepreneurship class she is actually hosting our spring Makers Market they had it in the fall at Lake Park and so now she's hosting it for us we do a lot of like the transition programs kind of network with each other we actually just had a formal with a bunch of the schools last Thursday at Chucks um so this is another opportunity for transition students to meet with other transition um schools and highlight cuz other transition programs have micro business as well so we're highlighting we all kind of do different things um so we'll be selling our items Mary passed out at bracelet she's going to

be selling those um Ray has like a flex don't stress thing that he's selling so some fun things that our students are doing um in our community so it'll be at the Linkin Center so if you're not doing anything on Wednesday between 10: and 1 stop by see our students um a cool thing is Ryan who is a student at dgn has a backpack project that we found out about so we're asking for donations his backpack project supports homeless individuals so when you see an individual who's homeless on the street you're able to give them a backpack um and help them and it has like gift cards and snacks and all kinds of various things so we're excited to partner with him and his amazing work highlight our students so if you can't come to

the event and you want to support Ryan's backpack project the link is up there um but our students will be there they'll be selling things we also sell the business items at Downers North and South we alternate Fridays when we go visit so downers Ro North and South students support us they ask they love the stickers we get tons of requests for their the stickers and what all the dogs everybody's dogs lots of dog stickers you need one for your laptop hey um and then so volunteering these are the places that we've volunteered this year kind of changes based on interest in our connections so um Meals on Wheels is a big one we've been feed our Starving Children people's Resource Center has been great partnership we help with their food pantry and we've had

we've um partnered with them to help a lot of our families who need resources um project here freed My Starving Children we volunteer at college educ paage and the cafeteria and sharing connections Mia has been a fantastic partner with us um she like comes to the graduation and she came to the interview Workshop so we like working with her and all the hard work that they do to support family amilies so just a little bit of data cuz everyone loves data we have 16 of our students who are competitively employed 27 students are currently job training volunteer um we have 23 Community Partners 41 students participate in the micro business and 100% of our staff support our student outcomes so and I'm going to turn over to um so a huge part as Carolina was

saying of our programming is developing connections with businesses in the community which has been a big part of my role this year um so this process is this my hand um to develop connections with Community Partners um I go into businesses all the time and I say I know these jobs and these jobs that our students can do and we work on like carving out jobs um for students to do really developing like job training or interning kind of proving how valuable and wonderful our students are um and then moving to competitive employment um so the downers gr Public Library is a really great example of this we had a student who began job training at the beginning of the semester um and in the last few weeks was just offered a part-time job to

be competitively employed and when we started there it was is like very much a like we're just going to job train um so they really saw how valuable our students are and how many skills they have and bring to the table so it's been really fun to explore those connections um so we have an immense amount of business partners and we're so grateful for them and this is lots of them it's constantly changing and evolving as we find new partners um some big ones that we've added this year are MOD Pizza which we'll highlight in a little bit Anderson's book shop in downtown Downers Grove is a huge one it's such a like core part of our like downtown business area so to be a part of that has been phenomenal they participated in our

interview Workshop a few weeks ago um and are now looking for additional ways our students can participate and work in their store so really cool um just to see so we're always always looking for more and we're so grateful for these Partners um and truly cannot say thank you enough to them for all they do for our students and now we're going to highlight some of our students so we have zav here and we'll have him talk in just a little bit but we had a couple of students who couldn't be here that we made some videos of and then a another student who just couldn't make it tonight so I will read her presentation um see if I can use this so MOD Pizza as I was talking about was a like previous partner

like preco and I may have brought them up at our last presentation um but we went into them again at the beginning of the school year and their manager very wonderfully said we don't want anybody here if we're not paying them so they have competitively employed our students this year to fold pizza boxes do some cleaning do some dishes fold those noname cakes that are really hard to eat just one of um and our students just love it they're they're able to work in the morning when it's quiet it's routine um so we're going to highlight Kyle today um who is one of our seniors graduating this year and has just done an exemplary job and he will be able to continue there after he leaves as part of his long-term goals I'm kle I

like to hold for [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] boxes so K Kyle loves it they're um really cool to watch him like learn how a new task and like once he gets it he just like runs with it um and a rockar all right um the next student we're going to highlight and he has a video in a minute um is Israel who I have been fortunate to know since I was a teacher at donor Grove South so I've known him for a very long time um he works at Marianos who has been a really great Community sponsor um and partner he bags groceries he does some sweeping which he will tell you all about in his video um but I think a really great thing to highlight here is

that another staff member sent me a selfie a while ago seeing him working and just how excited our staff members are seeing our students working in the community um and this is a job Israel can walk to it from his home it's accessible and they really just love him there every time I call and what can we work on what goals can we set and they're like nothing it's perfect like great what can we um but he is really an outstanding employee for them so I'm going to let him talk and you can also tell that this is the video I edited and the last one our wonderful Communications Department edited so um oh all so this is he talks about this but he created this presentation so hello my name is z I am

a junor 1999 and I graduated from D South in 2021 I worked at Mar in Weston my job is to BU groceries sleep floor and Pa drinks in the cooler up front I right with a lot of customers I got my job by John train firstes time and I did so good that J helped me apply for the job at Mario I got the job and started working parttime in front end of the store d99 helps me by preparing my intering skills giving me job training support supporting me with speech and talking to customers and checking on me at work my favorite thing about marel is sleeping the forest and making sure the store looks clean I also like going coworkers because they are friendly and helpful Mar is a great place at um so

Israel is obviously a very great example of um one of our workers in a great Community partner um so another thing he highlighted there is for many of our students interacting with customers at a job site is very challenging we have taught everybody for a very long time that strangers are not people we talk to um so I thought it was really cool that he highlighted like I've learned how to do that through t99 um and he has been working on this long before I got here he had this job before so a testament to the teachers who have worked with him for a while long time um so Jada is who could not make it tonight she is competitively employed at cers and is another student I have been fortunate enough to know um

since her freshman year at South so some of these poor students like really can't get away from me um but she is a food runner at Culver's and she does a really exemplary job she's another one that I just get rave reviews about um when I call they just tell me the skill she needs to work on to take the next step to maybe be a cashier um or do other jobs in their store so it's really um amazing to see her grow um she's a freshman in our program and I'm going to just read her speech so I'm gonna pretend to be Jada for just a moment so hello my name is Jada Henderson switched to her next slide that she need I am a freshman at t99 I graduated from Downers Grove South

in 23 I work at Culver's in Downer's Grove my job is to be a food Runner this means I serve customers at their tables and the drive-thru I get to interact with customers and make sure they have a great experience at culs I got my job through school I interviewed with the manager at Culver's my job coaches helped me prepare I did a few short trial shifts where a job coach helped me learn the new skills so I was ready to start I have been competitively employed since November of 202 23 t99 helps me make sure I have transportation set up I take Pace to and from work they made sure I had the tools I needed to be safe and ready they made sure I had a phone and knew how to pay my

phone bill with my new paychecks a lot of t99 Staff check on me and get some food while they are there wor place my favorite thing about cul is my co are my co-work workers they are supportive and nice they are helping me reach my goals and learn new skills I want to learn how to be a cashier and they are helping me by making sure that t99 knows what skills I need to work on so I can practice and the food is really good those are her words um so Jada's worked really hard she's set goals and then she comes into school and she's practicing making change and counting money back which is a very nerve-wracking experience when there's a customer in front of you um so I have learned in this job that

there are 1 million ways cash registers work um and that is a big part of the skills our students need is like really differentiating that training so that they know the skills they will need in their setting um to be successful using the monitors and some count the change for them out and lots of different ways so technology is a wild thing um and last but not least um our of the show today is going to be xavy Briggs um and he's going to talk all about what he does but he is job training currently at Midwest strength and performance which is a gym in weaton on Roosevelt Road um it is a partnership I'm very proud of it's the gym I go to um and it's just a very inclusive kind wonderful place um

I walked up to them one day before class and said hey any interest and they said yep when can you start um and it's been really amazing so I'm going to let Ze talk about his experience you ready Born Ready hey my name is C breaks I am a at9 iate from D go south in 2021 i s add M and performance my is the queen and make sure that Z is clean for customers my G me or so I I know exactly what s I need to do to get all my work done my favorite part of of sub doing my attacks and talking people who there her owners Mike S and today are rock stars day talk to me about work is like in M this place to work me when I need

to learn a new task they so me to take Pace to from work so I can't get there apparently my goal is to learn as many subs for them soon as I can I want to work in AIM or B a one day my skills are awesome yeah do you want to talk about some of the pictures up here and what you're doing in them yeah okay I I SCB that's know what that is you know one miss I take a picture fxing with my companion I Max and and and today thing what's in the bottom um it's my second list and I need to do I get the L box oh yeah gives you a reminder to clean all those little spots right yeah yeah it's helpful and I really appreciate it great job

[Applause] excellent um so again our business partners are something we are really proud of and really grateful for and we are constantly looking for new ones I have know like cards stashed in like every purse I own at this point um so anyone interested can certainly send me an email um I'm really happy to talk about this with any anybody and everyone orever so thank you very much thank you any questions from board members I just like to say I mean you're impacting lives that's what you're doing and uh it's fantastic and it's uh very moving and touching to hear about the individual stories and zav thank you for coming tonight I know it's not easy to up and speak in in public so you did a really nice job thank you thank you and

as much as I know you want to stick around for the rest of the meeting you're welcome to but you're also all welcome to go at this point thank you for being here thank you thank you very much thank you thank [Applause] you all right I'm going to turn it over to Jill would you like the clicker you're going to tell me to click we'll surrender the clicker to that's a tough act to follow all all the whole night so um yeah so it's good to see everybody um if you'll recall at the last meeting Ryan um shared the results from the spring survey and he his presentation was focused on those questions about the schedule um but there were also questions in the family survey surrounding Communications and engagement so that's what I want

to cover so we kind of inserted and piggybacked off of the spring survey um because we do issue Communications surveys very frequently because it's so helpful to identify where we need to focus and how we can improve so um so these questions this time focused on um people's preferences and ideas their overall satisfaction with our Communications and the engagement and as he shared over 400 families responded and that's a great response rate that's like 10% so very indicative of how people are feeling and what they are interested in I need to remember to click um so kind of put this up here our overall Communications um grades um 90% agree and believe that we communicate in a timely an effective Manner and I think that's very encouraging because that shows that people trust us I

think um 82% are satisfied with the type of information they receive um such as calendar information um Student Success story stories and academic information and then uh almost 80% High see um are satisfied with the frequency of information that they receive and I think there's an opportunity to improve those numbers of course um we know that many people are on information overload we send so much information to people so I think that that's reflected in those um numbers and so we're always looking to of ways to consolidate streamline simplify so that people can find what they need the most valuable community Communications listed were number one emails from the school and from the district um second were the daily announcements and this is the first time this year that we automatically sent those dat Sent

send the daily announcements to people in the past they used to have to subscribe so it's um good to see that people appreciate having that daily reminder of things that are going on and then of course back in the back in the back of the room the Mustang memo and the notes from North the principal messages um that come out every Friday are an important component of how will hear from us um and then you can see the other channels websites and people could click uh or select as many as were valuable to them so less so the websites social media board highlights and the common connection is our new um external newsletter that we send out monthly um and then board meetings don't be disappointed 7% 7% rely on those um I'm surprised it's

that high yeah yeah yes um again have they did the surve that you took the survey okay shout out to yourselves yeah um uh again 37% cited the website as important which was kind of surprising um that it wasn't higher on the list I think for people um it's it's not the First Source that people check um only not the majority but only um 41% sometimes visit the website and of those 59% sometimes find what they need or 34% always find what they need so obviously there's a big um opportunity for improvement to be a better service to our families um this was a common refrain um I find it but there are so many places to look it's not very user friendly and part of the challenge with that I believe is that we

have a separate site for payment we have a separate site for athletics a separate site for the the Home Access Center so accessing grade so it's difficult to to put all that together so that's kind of the result of the different platforms that we do use if I can just add as a parent I I think it's very helpful that the teachers and coaches whenever I get an email about paying something they always tell you how to pay it it gets me actually to pay faster because I'm like oh I'm going to do it right now because I'm going to forget the app or I'm going to forget so you every company has that issue of multiple systems the teachers and and coaches and all that are really good about guiding parents so that they

can do it efficiently so good um well despite the challenges um but we do know that our website is the portal to everything so we want to make sure that it's simple and clear um so kind of on our to-do list is to refresh the current site that we have do an audit of what we have um paying particular attention to the calendars because that's number one reason why people come to our websites um and see what we can do to improve the navigation um but this whole exercise has also caused us to consider What alternative platforms are out there um we've been on our current platform for 9 years now um so there's there's some Limited in what we can accomplish because it's template based um so we're researching what other tools are out

there and what is kind of Best in Class for other school districts so that we can be a little more Progressive and look a little more sophisticated than we are and we also asked about engagement and the confidence in leaders that people have because I know all of us here want to make sure that everybody knows we're available and willing to listen to people um to their concerns and 88% believe that the Board of Education and the leaders provide sufficient opportunities to meet and engage and then the majority are very confident or confident that if they do have a problem or a concern or suggestion that that you'll listen so there are many events um held this year to promote access better access to the Board of Education members and we promoted these on all

of our channels social media email Etc um the first of these was I'm just going to do a high high review to remind you of what we did this year um the community sharing sessions there were four of them two at North two at South in the evening um and in total there were probably 19 people who came um the first event we think probably 15 of those were at that first opportunity and that's pretty typical we find that more people attend in the fall they're more engaged and um want to engage with us um but then it tapered off and other um sessions were sparsely attended but it was fun to meet the people right we also held um two open houses um to celebrate our 100-year anniversary and commemorate that one on a

Saturday and one on a Sunday it was not a big turnout either 15 people I think um came in at north um there were nice groups there was a group of a family of three generations of graduates from North High which was fun the woman with the yearbook was in the class of 1960 something and ran into a classmate of hers which was fun and there Char's husband he wanted to be watching the Bears game uh the transition 99 ribbon cutting um was a fun way to celebrate the t99 renovations um that was very well attended because students and and parents were there and um excited to celebrate the new facility and have cupcakes so we we saw about 70 to 75 people there um the realtor breakfast we held in January and that we

invited all area Realtors to come to South High um and promoted that with and presented with our Affiliated districts um and provided uh just general information about each school district and the schools so that Realtors could have more information to provide to their clients to identify where their families might like to be located um we had very positive feedback on that and we think strong attendance with 60 or so people attending so kind of Lessons Learned learned from this year it's definitely a challenge to get people out and um come to an event when their student isn't involved people are busy and have other things on their calendar so um we brainstormed of what might be a good approach for 24 25 um and one is to restart the lunchtime live um so Hank um

puts that on or used to for years um this the first year that we didn't do it it probably was so um so it's an online um meeting where people can come in on a zoom call and Hank provides a short presentation and answers questions and it's more frequent so we can be more timely with our updates it's virtual and therefore recorded um so the the qu highlighted question mark is kind of thinking maybe the board members um would be interested in participating in that um and being featured if if that's of Interest so um maybe just one or two board members so something to think about um we also recommend continuing with the the student recognition just like we did tonight um it's an opportunity to engage with families um but we'd like to

be more intentional with how we engage with them so after we have the program kind of pause have a refreshment or two so you could interact with people and then resume the meeting which is how we have done it in the past and that's been successful and then finally we' just like to continue with the realtor breakfast but maybe include other key audiences so reach out to our Chamber of Commerce the Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation rotate them in so that the schools could present to them um also maybe invite our villages in so that we can develop some relationships um with them there and just Mutual understanding of what what everybody's doing in the community um and then just rotate that every few years as the idea so we'll coordinate with the Affiliated districts

about that idea but we just wanted to bring it to the board and for your input so is breakfast a good I would assume breakfast people can sort of break is the attendance typically good at breakfast meetings we've had like 60 to 70 the for the Realtors and we think that the the last time we held it was right before Co um and but many of the same people came to it so we think by rotating it it'll just um have more opportunity to reach more more people so that's all I have about the communications if anybody has any questions or thoughts I'm excited about the lunchtime live prior to being on the board I attended those and I thought they were really good they're right over the lunch hours if you do work I

would often have my lunch and be listening so I think that's a great good thing to bring back good yeah we tried you know based on the conversations with the board last summer tried to create more like inperson contact opportunities but they just I mean it didn't pan out we saw much more had much more interaction with people although virtually in the old format of lunchtime live even if it was 10 to 15 people a month when you add that up over the course of the year it was far more than this new format although we we didn't have much Community engagement in the community sessions it sounds like from the those that are surveyed they feel as though we are creating opportunities for them to be heard and or learn about the districts so

even though I'm sure you would have liked to have seen more engagement um I think the survey indicates that at least we're trying and um they the public believes that there are opportunities if they have issues sure right and I think by promoting the lunchtime live will generate more interest and a more regular Cadence of that too so um so that will continue to accomplish that goal maybe the community sessions in the future could be targeted on a subject a topic um that might drive more interest um rather than just a general presentation and that's what the principles do um you know with the parent clubs too so that might be another Avenue to pop in and um you know piggyback off of what they're they're doing and and interact with people there we have

found that parents are far more likely in District 99 to attend their school events than a district related event you know so uh this year you know we tried you know to go to some District events with the open houses with uh those Community engagement sessions and it they just didn't grab traction right so I think we're better off leveraging the connections that are already there in the schools and uh kind of hitching our wag into their events and then we can just go back to this this like Jill said this monthly Cadence people kind of are on the lookout for those updates uh and and bring people information that way and we also know when people have questions of us they reach out they find us you know we're accessible that way we're prompt

in our responses to people we give them accurate information we don't always give them the answers they want but we always give them answers in a timely fashion I think piggyback I really like your idea of these piggybacking on like the inperson when the families come to these events I think piggyback on the things that draw people I mean every every company is struggling with engaging people in person so I think it's it's beyond a d99 education issue it's yeah two birds and one stone totally yeah if Courtney and rwin are okay with that if going back this might not be yours but 8 to 18 is kind of crummy platform to did did the survey touch on those websites there there were lots of comments surrounding that and I know from our athletic directors

that were kind of tied to that based on just the whole conference and that's where the they get their referees and it's a whole backend system where um we're kind of tied to that so but I I think that providing them with feed back um and pressure to improve so it might one way to go yeah maybe just help to to work with the coaches to keep them up to date sure I guess yep I think parents prefer to see you know what's going on with their current season Sports and you know it's sometimes really you have to dig through that site to get to what you want and it's hard hard to find it so not very user friendly I guess right so and we might be able to put a cover on top

of it you know with our own website and South did a good job of that so we we there are ways to to navigate so to speak around that yeah or even like a way to share it like with grandparents or you know other family members that want to come and watch sometimes it's hard for them to navigate the the schedule links and things like that so I agree some of that yeah we'll work on it work in progress continue to try to evolve yeah all right anything else for Jill thank you Joe thank all right our last agenda item is recognition of gaana and Nala for their service this year this is their last official meeting because they will graduate before we have our next meeting they're of course welcome to attend might have

one last meeting but at the next meeting we'll uh uh recognize our incoming student board members so uh thank you both for the job that you've done in representing uh what's going on in the schools I think you've both done a wonderful job in reporting both acad mically what's going on but also the full student experience that's happening in both schools and I think that's a piece that the public like they drive Jill says this all the time people drive by our schools and they think they know what happens in there because they went to school once but school's very different than it even was a few years ago so uh we appreciate that constant student perspective of what's going on and for being here for when a board member wants to put you on

the spot and asks you uh about what you're doing and how things are going around a topic uh and then I'll follow in that tradition put you both on the spot and have you share what you're doing next after you leave us so Nala you get to go first okay um I'm going to lyola University Chicago and then majoring in public health on the Premed track oh good for you congratulations good very good uh I'm going to University of Virginia to major in politics and and minor in computer science oh wow all right so Cong ulations and job well [Applause] done thank you thank you you guys do important work too cuz when we go to the conference it's not this is not the norm to have student board representatives and so it's I think

it's really like Hank said you don't always know you know what's going on in a school and so it's it's I think it's great to have you guys and and hear what's what's happening and so that's a good thing I think you guys just did a phenomenal job I know personally I look forward to it every month hearing what's really going on in the schools and getting that student experience and I mean it was just invaluable so invaluable for us to understand what's going on and for us make decisions that reflected what the students really needed and it's just it's been fantastic you guys really did an outstanding job thank you so much well it makes me jealous that we didn't do those kind of things in in the high school when I was there
