001good evening roll call please Mike Davenport here Christopher Espinoza here shirelle Fuller here Jenny hagstrom here Terry pavisich here Joanna Vazquez Drexler president Nancy cupka here Luca plauskas here and Caitlin Vincent here thank you thank you let's stand for the pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all start off with some recognition yeah we have several recognitions uh this evening uh the first is that uh last week we had a school board member appreciation day which recognizes our volunteer board members and for all of their service that's greatly appreciated by all of us here in District 99 and of course our two student board members for all of their time uh volunteering as
002well so there's a little token of gratitude there for you that is designed to give you all the calories you need for this evening but uh thank you all for all that you do well thank you also our board members received a variety of recognitions recently one is from the board leader recognition program for the Illinois Association of school boards and this is for professional development that board members engage in so Dr kopka received the established board leader recognition and Terry also received the established board leader recognition thank you I'll get my steps in here and uh my Davenport received the distinguished board leader [Applause] also uh this past week was the joint annual conference uh and their District 99 was very well recognized we received the as has been shared at prior board meetings
003the award of Distinction for our Master facility plan projects at both North and South High this is the highest level of award that is offered by the Illinois Association of school boards for architectural projects for excellence in the design of educational environments so the board received this award last Friday along with white and Company for that project and our own Julie nydek received the Holly Jack award which recognizes uh the most outstanding board secretary in the state and was well deserved and in wonderful things to say about our team and our district so congratulations [Applause] all right with that uh we have the opportunity for our students perspectives so I don't know who won the arm wrestling match but Caitlyn oh student oh I'm sorry student perspective it says it right there student I Courtney
004they'll give them time to decide who goes first everyone if you guys have representing North High School so a number of years ago bass fishing was made in ihsa sport and as ihsa recognized and so I'm here to introduce Ethan Mia and Jack um and our sponsor Mr Chris guerreri um who are going to talk about bass fishing at North High School so guys go right ahead all right um I don't know if you guys have any questions but come up to the mic please so we kind of have a slideshow back there and kind of what bass fishing at North is all about um so this is our bass fishing team and Club at Downers Grove North High School just tell me when to advance here um so basically anyone can participate if you're
005freshmen seniors anyone who loves to fish is Welcome to our club are we open to all uh Diner North students um so some of our notable achievements uh we are the 2019 and 2021 ihsa sectional champions um we are the 2019 and 21 2021 and 2022 ihsa state qualifiers uh this past year we won the ibfca state champion chip and um we got a bid to the Bassmaster national uh Championship as well and these are just some of our pictures so this was uh me and Jack at State uh we won this one with a two-day total 29 pounds where do you fish at State I was like okay yeah it was uh roughly 66 teams out there representing teams all over from Illinois so it was pretty cool experience for us um so this
006was Nationals down at Lake Hartwell um it was a basically a whole week experience where we got to showcase our talents and our abilities to everyone Across the Nation so it's like just a big thing oh really cool and these are just some of our sectional pictures these are two former students who actually kind of really helped uh bring this club up and found it so these are Max Netty then this is with them with their second second sectional trophy um the photo on the right is from this past year this past sectional this is Mia all the way on the left oh it's me and Jack all the way in the right that's Spencer Eli and Danny um we managed to get second and third in our sectionals and all the way on the
007left is our first sectional win ever for Downers Grove North and these are just some more pictures from this past year at sectionals me and Jack are on the left Spencer Eli Mia and Danny are on the right and um yeah [Music] is good [Music] yes that's pretty much it if you guys have any questions how do they um determine winning numbers of fish or pounds of fish so it's your best five fish she'll fish all day and you get to keep five fish in your liveo so they stay alive we're not trying to harm them or anything and then at the end you bring them in and you weigh them and whoever has the most pounds all combined so it's pounded winds yeah it's poundage yeah and then also they usually give an award
008out for the biggest fish caught as well so that will help you out a lot as well okay and then do you have any uh sonar um things to find the fish yeah so usually on the boats that we fish off they usually have the graphs and stuff that show the fish and they're starting to come out with more and more technology where you can actually see the like blurs of fish moving around and stuff so we do use that yes during the tournaments but it's regulated you can't just use whatever you want they they monitor what you use uh you can kind of use whatever you want there's no really regulations on it because there's only so much technology that you're allowed to use basically whatever you could what kind of bait do you
009use oh that's a hard question there's like a bunch of varieties whatever the fish are biting yeah yeah so do you make your own flies or do you use uh like I I used to fish a lot yeah yeah yeah so we usually just like go to the store and buy the lures we do have some friends that do like handcraft lures himself but yeah mainly we used to go to the store and pick them out yeah they're pretty cool yeah so but no it's how did you get interested in fishing uh for me personally it happened during covid quarantine that couldn't do much anything else so went out fishing I've always liked it but I really started to get into like the whole High School fishing thing during quarantine for me my whole life
010grew up fishing because my dad's side of the family fishing and hunting was just the thing to do in Pennsylvania so I've just been salmon fishing bass fishing trout fishing my whole entire life fly fishing too just everything and when I got to high school I realized that other people around here actually like fishing and stuff as well so that's when I started getting more back into it because I didn't really have any friends growing up who liked it but yeah I've been a fisherman my whole life really so very good all pretty much similar to both of them I uh I pretty much grew up fishing with the fishing rod in my hands and as uh I got into Junior High in the high school I got more serious about it and it was
011really cool to see that it was already a club started for me to uh just be a part of and just get to know other people who share the passion and um yeah share the love for the sport like I do so if we have students who've never fished in their life can they come out for that oh yeah absolutely and how many students are in your group .com usually and then on the team we have about like 10 solid people that could like that want to fish tournaments and really have like a desire to help other people out and learn different things fishing wow that's really great you guys are doing really great because it's not always easy to fish patience patience patience yes Ethan what is the fishing season for you guys um
012so kind of our fishing season would be a majority of the fall and spring obviously the winter it gets too cold out here to do any of those tournaments on the open water but in the fall and the spring we compete in various tournaments all across Illinois and that's kind of our season very good they have a very robust Instagram too all right yeah so all right well thank you thank you thank you all right now student board members do we decide who's going first this week you can go first all right so at South we've had a lot of exciting new changes um starting with we've heard from student like opinions on access and resource periods so instead of just having straight up presentations during resource it has been changed to be more of
013a free time for students and there's been a lot more activities added for students to make it a little bit more fun um over the past few weeks we had a time where students can make paracord bracelets celebrating Veterans Day and we watched a whole video about Veterans Day and was I think we were able to write letters to Veterans serving also which was really a great thing to do for our veterans there's also an opportunity during French week to watch Ratatouille in the auditorium people if you wanted to so nice the brain break in the day just watch a movie with your friends and with the World Cup going on there's going to be some activities doing Resource as well just to give students a nice fun thing to do but the nice thing
014about it is it isn't mandatory for all students so if they want something fun to do during the day they have it for them but they also can still have that student um like autonomy with how they spend their time which is really nice we also had a lot of Celebration with sports we won conference for football which was really nice and a nice thing for our players and we had a lot of State Runners for our cross-country team that did really well for state so that was a really good thing for our school just some school spirit in that winter sports is starting up which I'm a little bit biased but is my favorite season because I am a basketball player so we have our first home game tomorrow so we're excited to have
015more basketball games and kind of shift into that season of things and we just had our snowball Retreat this past weekend which is a really fun event for students to kind of get away for the weekend and have some team building um I wasn't able to go but I was a leader last year and it's just such a fun event for students to kind of meet other people in their school that they may not already know and have some pretty cool keynote speakers there and all in all uh people are just kind of getting in the groove we also started Coco in the Commons every Friday so there was in the morning there are staff members handing out hot free hot chocolate on your way to class which is really nice it's a nice way
016to start off the morning and we're just in a group at South and it feels really good I know people are really excited for Thanksgiving break kind of a good point of the semester to have a little break from school so it's been good Caitlyn yeah so I couldn't help but notice I think Ethan's shirt in the sticker on the back of yours so are you into fishing as well um my dad more so is into fishing okay but I want him to take me like all in the winter like ice fishing that's what I want to get into more wow but we'll see if that happens I tell you I I've done that before yeah too cold stuff so I want to use it but I know we have a bass fishing team I
017don't know a few I know a few people on it but I'm not that serious about fishing very good um so starting off with all the fun stuff that have been going on um I want to give a great a big congrats to our boys cross country team for getting third in state um I know there was a celebration this morning for it um I saw Miss demet with our Trophy and it was great to see it um some other fun stuff I know that obviously previously we've had some issues with Wi-Fi but to try and cut that down we try to incorporate it in a fun way so instead of having all the students on their phone watching the World Cup today we had it on a few of our TVs so that people
018would instead watch the TVs provided instead of using their phone so maybe cut down on the issues during other class periods um also like going back to Halloween um we had fun stuff like a pumpkin contests and um there were definitely some very cool projects that people came up with and it was nice to see that people actually enjoy um incorporating themselves in those type of activities in school there's also celebration for a macho man who graduated from Downers Grove North and there were different um surveys and Gifts such as Slim chips um cake was passed out socks shirts and stickers just to make it a little more fun during the school day and then for our coffee shop for breast cancer awareness month also taking it back we were selling um pink cupcakes to
019help bring awareness to that once again and that was definitely a big seller because people obviously like the way they look but also the taste was quite amazing and then bring it to I am on the student advisory Council team so I was able to listen to a few people's feedback on the schedule and how they're adapting to it and according to everyone they're very enjoying the autonomy days because they're able to get their work done and obviously with sports starting up once again the winter sports people are able to get more of that time to focus on other things after school than their schoolwork so that was definitely a big win are you into fishing is the night of fishing I I like fishing I'm not once again I'm not like the person who
020would joined the bass fishing team but I definitely I've gone fishing during the summer with my dad and that's definitely been a part of me but I definitely have other hobbies that overtake that it's the worms that get them every day [Laughter] thank you both thank you thank you thank you okay we'll move on uh to uh the minutes we need a motion for the Board of Education to approve the minutes of the October 17 2022 business meeting and the October 17th 2022 closed meeting the November 7th 2022 Workshop meeting with action items and the November 7th 2022 close meeting so moved sect Terry and shirelle thank you thank you Terry pavesich aye Cheryl Fuller aye aye Jenny hagstrom aye Joanna Vasquez Drexler aye Mike Davenport aye Christopher Espinoza aye and Nancy cupcuff hi uh
021the minutes are approved do we have anybody for first okay was there anybody who did wish to speak during the first perception we have no slips okay hearing none we'll move on to five Labs overview oh you're getting there all right yeah so I'm uh I'm happy to go over an overview of how we're using five Labs which is our kind of data warehouse um uh overview how we're supporting students so I think you can go ahead and so the first thing we're going to kind of look at is um we'll talk a little bit about how we're currently using five Labs we'll go over the data that we're pulling to help support directly students and then we'll kind of talk a little bit about how it aligns to this strategic plan so for current
022uses you'll notice on that you can go ahead one more you can notice on the left hand side we have so five Labs we basically build pages and so these are the different pages that we have these are some of them um and um all these Pages then on the right hand side is our staff that who have access to five Labs so for example um and I'm not going to go through each one of these of what they are but we will show you a little bit later some kind of case studies and how we're using it but like case management pages to give you an idea we we have a page that our counselors our social workers psychologists even our special ed case managers can load on their computer and it kind of
023gives them their caseload so if I'm a counselor I can see my 260 students that are on my caseload and get a lot of different information it kind of synthesizes that information so you can see we have a lot of staff on the right that are involved in there you can see like Mustang weight and positively North coaches have access to a certain page that gives them data for what they're doing but on the next two slides I'm going to show you a little bit about our individual student report so on there if you notice um there's and these Pages obviously have a lot of data but the top arrow is kind of pointing to just an overview of a student I did obviously gray out so we you know don't for confidentiality reasons but
024you can see the different areas in color up on the top shifting your focus more to the the Third Kind of red areas the tenants and discipline the right side far right is the activities and GPA kind of a summary of a student of where they're at so a quick look so the middle Arrow we identified some key things that we wanted to look at quickly so for example if a student was failing a course you would see that number show up on the far left this student happens to not be failing any courses currently we're building all our College and Career ready so right now you see those as not applicable but those will be things that we're building anything from e-school that we have there in our student information system we can build
025them out into five Labs so this this is kind of a continual process of what we're doing the bottom Arrow points to achievement data that we're putting into five Labs so for example if you look at the Blue Bar the first one is um the SAT reading score that's the student score so you can quickly see a visual compared to the collective group that took the assessment so you can see that the student actually visually the blue bar is obviously taller than the gray bar right so this student in Reading is actually scoring higher than the average and then if you look to the to the right you'll see the math scores there you can see that if you quickly just look at the visual the students comparing right to the to the average of
026of the student body so again that's comparing you know Juniors last year all the Juniors that took the assessment that's what you're comparing to that student was a junior last year that took the assessment so and then the next slide um Still Still I had to divide it into two screenshots for you but still on the same page of the student report um a lot of it's grayed out but I'll give you kind of just an overview of what it all means but the the top arrow is pointing to our notes which we use as kind of like our interventions so you can quickly see how many interventions have been provided to students I left two on there the first one was administrative contact and then the second one down is a college plan so
027we have different note types that we use that are part of what our interventions are and so they're all listed in there so teachers also have the ability to add what we call as tack notes and then they show up here too so imagine if you're a counselor you could look at this and kind of go through and see quickly how many teachers engage with students who other in the district is in great engage with students all through that top Arrow kind of box area and then this the middle arrow is all the grades so you'll see current grades of students so quickly snapshot of students and how they're performing and then the bottom Arrow looks at the activities and remember as part of you know our College and Career Readiness we want students to
028be in activities so this student happens to be in two activities and that was on the slide before up in the top right but they would list what the activities are so another area to if a student wasn't in activities we'd be able to see that quickly we'd be able to do things to try to engage students to get involved you know we're we're about belonging and being a part of the school system and schools so and then on the next slide we are fortunate to collaborate with our partner schools what we did with that is we have an intergovernmental agreement to share data so um and I'll just kind of take you through the example this is kind of what you're seeing up there is a a visual of what our partner schools can
029log into and see they're looking at District 99 students but how they're performing from their school so there are current students but it gives say um if you're looking at say Jefferson Jefferson would log in they would see how Jefferson students are doing in District 99 so our current students but they get to kind of see various data so I think if you go to the next slide it kind of outlines they can look at freshmen on track or the you know Grade 9 on track they can look at attendance they can look at GPA they'll look at just like you saw the blue and gray bar they can see how their school district and school is performing against the collective Elementary District just to get a sense of um you know how they're doing
030and then obviously course grade distribution so again it's all based on current d-99 students that attended those schools but like Jefferson cannot see you know Herrick students or anything like that they just can see their data they each have a page oh so they can't compare whether their students are doing we only see their students oh so they can't see that you know their students are excelling in math over all of the other um senders but they can actually see their students names that's that's our integration right but they just see an average okay all right that's a man you can see their students so anyone from Jefferson of Jefferson's logged in they can see actually The District 99 students that attended from Jefferson so they could see John Smith as yeah because like I
031meet with them three times a year and we talk about different things about articulation um you know what kind of data do they want to see I know Jefferson reached out a while back and they were looking at um they were looking at data to decide if they should um they currently teach Spanish for two years but some of the other partner districts only teach it their one year and so they wanted to compare some data to the collective so we ran some data for them and shared it out so I mean it's been a great relationship and we're continuing to build it this year I'm going out to each school if they would like me to um to just kind of work with them about their data we meet obviously three times as a
032collective but we're also now going out and meeting them individually so we're excited about it it's a great thing there's been a a lot of you know good feedback about it and so we're excited about the future with our working with our partner schools and then kind of looking at the data we value these are where I'm going to take you through a little bit of a kind of a case study of what we're doing um so we have a page that shows up that's a dnf grade report and you know Dr thiele's been obviously talking about you know strategic and systematic of how we support students well this is one way that we can quickly identify different demographic of students and then we have access to Administration to Department chairs our counselors have access
033so it's something that we can run a dnf report we can look at different groups of students so the one I'm going to take you through on the next slides is looking at the dnf report and then I'm going to show you how we drill down to say ninth graders and then students that have a disability and when I ran the data we have 46 students that are identified in that so I think if you want to go to the next slide so I would go into five Labs I'd go under the dnf report I would click on you can see the blue bar on the top there is ninth grade I know it's hard to see if you actually click on that on the screen it repopulates the page just to be the ninth
034graders and then if you click on over here is special education if you click on that bar graph then it repopulates ninth graders and special education only and so you can drill down to see those students and as I mentioned there was 46 students when I ran it that were getting a drf in the district that are specialized but the positive on that is that we now have really quick ways for people to just look at the student list I'm not showing you that part of it but this The Next Step would be we could run a list just by a click of a button and so we can then sort and filter things like that um and then the next um kind of case study or the process that we do is um and
035you've seen the reports that we've given to you I know Dr thaly's presented you with kind of a at the end of the year all the student um you know at what uh Athletics and activities students are in um obviously part of College and Career readiness we again have a quick way to identify students so this year we we had um the previous years we had we were looking at students that were in activities this year we've created a new system to actually identify students that are not in activities as well and then we can obviously look at the different uh demographics and then we can make some decisions on how we might intervene with those students that are not in activities obviously we can look at those that are in and see the different
036demographics but our goal is to obviously have students belong and be a part of the school and engaged so what I'm going to show you on the next slide is kind of taking you through this what the Student Activities page looks like but then looking at it from those that are not in an activity that are also qualified for fee waiver so just kind of adding variables to show you how quickly we can get information so in this case we ended up when I did it running it through that with a couple clicks we ended up with 343 students but the nice thing is again we can export those lists to get the actual student names and start to work on how are we going to get students involved so we have like our athletic
037and student directors you know working on that to see who we need to you know work on and market and and get involved in activities so the next slide again you would load the Student Activities page um you could see in the red rectangle it's not an activity so I can again click right on that bar graph it'll repopulate the page then over on the the right you can see there's a filter called Low Income if I select it's basically our yes or no when you click on that you would select yes and then that would repopulate your page again to be students that are not in activities that are part of our fee waiver so we can get a generated list and if you remember that was 343 students so we can you know
038then quickly engage with those students with that um kind of aligning to our strategic plan if you recall Dr thiely and Gina talking about on the left those State indicators if you remember we were talking about the state has those percentages for um um giving us kind of our our score so we have the SC sat if you remember was the the English language arts and math they were seven and a half I just combined it just for this slide sake we have graduation rate the ninth grade on track the absenteeism College and Career ready all those percentages that the state's looking at we've aligned five labs to run data on all that and we're building out the graduation rate right now for for longitudinal data so we're excited about the fact that we can
039really carve anything out to start looking at data um in a meaningful way and how to really directly impact students on a different level so we're you know excited about that obviously there's many more ways it aligns the Strategic plan I just wanted to show you this to start with so and I think the last one is any questions that you have right and how are you doing yeah like our so both John and Mark and both buildings have access so they can run reports I mean you can even do filters like if you want to look at say the students that are experiencing homelessness you can do that as a filter under Student Activities and then you can drill down to that but yes then what happens is that our team is then um
040you know working on doing different things to encourage students to get involved um it you know could be as simple as just identifying that list and then sending something out to the student and the parents right to say Hey you know is there clubs and activities I know like our counselors have access as well so they can see under the student page if a student when they're meeting with the student if they're involved in an activity real quickly and so they can actually then encourage students to become involved so it's these are all pages that our staff are are now able to access so kind of we're working through all those things of how are we going to then engage the next question I have yeah no it's a great question yeah those are right
041that's absolutely as a leadership team uh we meet about every other week and one of our opening activities all of us have certain uh questions about what's going on in the district Trends patterns uh you know is something we're doing actually making a difference so each administrator in the district has one of those questions that they're pursuing and every two weeks we partner together and Report out in it report out on progress we're making either towards understanding that issue or improving whatever that the thing that we're working on so for example all fall my project has been around ninth grade on track so every two weeks I have a data sheet I update the whole leadership team on you know what progress are we making on getting students that aren't on track back on track
042in the buildings they're tracking that information as well and they're working with their counselors on those specific students making sure that we understand why they're not on track making sure that their parents are informed you know intervening with individual teachers so that's kind of but finding them and isolating that group and making sure that we're you know keeping track of it and it's not just falling through the cracks is what you know this kind of tool allows us to do very quickly and as you see as you saw it puts it in a way that's very visually you know able to understand you know so it's not just tables of data it's interactive and it's easy to digest and it opens up the ability for both us to have conversations about what's going on but
043also then to identifying intervene with students as we need to yep sometimes the data will tell it to us before something elsewhere so is this partitioned internally can everybody see everything or no like okay no we have a security role-based yeah yeah well um I was like four or five years ago that you brought this to the board and and I've been excited about it ever since learning about it at the triple I conference I think in maybe 2018 or something they had a you said hey go down and look they'll be there and so really powerful tool tool um are we so the the data that's getting in there is that a I'm assuming it's a like a living document so we're not just looking at grades and things at the end of a
044marking period as so it seems it's it's it's pretty dependent on those inputs getting in there right away so um the you know so important that teachers are getting that data in uh I know that's been something in the in the past yeah that's it but that's been an expectation for right really strongly for the last several years and it seems to be working in a good time because this is I mean now it's really important um so that we've got the right data and I'd be interested um going forward in hearing more about those um you know the progress and the outcomes uh from our feeder our partner districts um how this is being you know how this really leading to really good outcomes for them it's it's pretty easy to imagine in ways
045that it would it would just be great to to hear some even at just you know four examples um to help emphasize the importance of of the impact that the state is is making and so because that's I mean it it seems like a Great Loop right it helps us deal with what we're dealing with in the here and now and how to help those students forward but helping our our partner districts better understand how their students are performing as they as they matriculate to our to our high schools helps them better you know align their programs and and so the students can be even more successful in the future that's just it's a win win-win yeah the the bridge is a gap that usually exists in school districts where K-8 is in separate districts
046from 912 so this allows us that the data Insight that a unit district would typically have yes so and to me this is just this is a a piece that is really needed because this that's a major disadvantage of these diff when we have these different districts like this and so so exciting stuff thank you yeah all right moving on um Capital Improvement plan uh Jim's here tonight to provide some of the overviews of this this has been developed over the fall the board has seen some draft versions of this moving along and uh Jim's going to explain how some of the projects are going to remain in capital and some are going to move into life and safety that we need to do good evening everyone one thing I do know is I'm not
047going to be able to top bass fishing tonight but I'll try okay so we have capital for 23.24 uh there's the Matrix and as Hank just mentioned we have some Life Safety I'll get to that after I go through the capital Improvement uh remember that these numbers that are estimated costs are really concept budget numbers we will go out to bid and the true numbers we'll come back to you for approval so just to to remind the board these come back project by project for approval large RMS is repairs that we have district-wide that come up throughout the course of the year that we uh and in the summer we also do some concrete and asphalt repairs that are smaller so this is a line item that we put aside for the school year the
048next three are annuals bleachers we inspect them and do repairs accordingly each year and ffne is for furniture tables student desks chairs and turf is for our grounds at North and South for turf field and green spaces next up is the girls softball field I was at North when we built this field in 2011 and many of the ADA requirements were Grant fire grandfathered in at that time uh it changed a few years later yeah so we noticed that we've had this on the list for a couple years now we want to get this work done next summer so including this will be improved elevations uh some storm water control sidewalks to the bleachers and dugouts and 88 bleachers on both sides and last but not least we're gonna have a batting cage on the
049right field line so these will be improvements and all of them will put us ADA Compliant good deal the roof at North this is 1994 just a small section about 3 300 square feet it's on the southwest side of the 28 Wing So Right Where Prince Street is on that corner uh it's a tear out of the and removal of the single ply new insulation cover board and membrane to be put on next is the roof at North as well this is a part of the roof that was not replaced with the mfp that was from 1993 again small area 3 500 square feet again bringing it down to the roof deck and then providing insulation and cover board and membrane next is the billing automation systems for North these are new controls for outdated
050obsolete controls they uh there's two big Air Handlers that these are are for they control classrooms and office areas on second third floor of the school so a pretty large area and Jim the key change from this is moves from monitoring what's going on in those areas to actually controlling that is a croissant in those areas so the vaos when you put controls on it when you first get a system if you don't have the controls everything's manual you set up 72 degrees and that's where it's run you can't really look at it throughout the course of the day Winters the seasons change uh air flow obviously we've been putting more airflow from outside air into our our schools so this helps control it right from a computer pool scoreboard at North I actually put
051this in as well in 2007. uh actually we did this at the same time North and South so this board has a lifespan of about 10 years and we're getting close to 16. what we're seeing especially at North but South will also experience these problems is that things are breaking down and the parts are not they're obsolete we can't even find them anymore so we're having a tough time so we want to upgrade this we want to replace it with new boards for north and south and you'll see that on South line item as well they also do not have a CAT5 cable line so really with an improved line and improved board we're going to be able to do much more moving things for our pools visuals and for our teams who are excellent
052teams at both sides of style shift them South this is the music Suite flooring area and chairs rolled carpet about 4 500 square feet and the tile is about 6 700 square feet so we're going to replace with carpet squares on the carpet area and on the tile two by two quarts there's no asbestos in Syria so that you know brings the price down dramatically experienced that enough in the mfp yes uh additionally there'll be some plastic chairs that will replace what's existing there student parking lot at South this is a big lot 81 000 square feet so it's complete removal of the current asphalt some have to even go further down the stone base so there's a lot to this one But ultimately there'll be a new layer of two inch asphalt and then
053striping after it's completed building automation at South similar to North these are two different Air Handlers over there that control a fair amount of the building so uh these will be replaced as well and upgraded and taking you back just a little history of our BAS system years ago when we bought our units we were with Johnson Controls and you go back 20 years now and they were really the proprietary person and they had control and it's changed so much over the years these systems now and we use precision and that's what we've pretty much replaced Johnson with in all of our buildings we're almost there as you see every year I bring this back we have another hundred thousand but all this money is well spent because we're saving so much on the control
054side of the climate in the classroom in areas but also are Gas and Electric which really just just comes down we have that much control of it so it's important to do these things and and being able to see it on a computer when you get a phone call from a classroom on the second floor you can pinpoint what's going on with it right away and then you can see things that are breaking down way before you notice it in the field okay okay oh I think it was last let's see if there any questions on the Capital Improvements before he digs into Life Safety I just wanted one thing sorry the Grant I I know jury had brought to the board for approval you approved the ISB fifty thousand dollar Grant we did apply
055for that we will use that towards the north Bas uh controls if we get that so that would cut that down fifty thousand sorry Hank no no I forgot we're going to talk about that okay all right so questions for the capital part before Jim dives into Life Safety improvements is the is the student parking lot replacement uh based on a a actual number I mean it's almost the estimate there seems a little more precise and it's actually a little less than I thought it might be so I contacted three companies that I work with and said you know if I was gonna do this tomorrow how much would it cost how much no I added you know a little bit here and there and that's how I got to that okay yes some were
056at 200 000. yes the two of them were 148 156 so okay like I'll use the 148. I was just asking where is the student parking lot because I didn't think our students really parked that much in art our parking lot is packed yeah but a lot of them are not students yes they are so that's why um my kids never got a student parking lot oh we we did about as many as we can every year yes we have a student lot that's alongside the football field and we've worked with the um the villages turned over street parking to us to manage as well around the school so that adds to well that's good uh our parking available 15 years since they were here anyway so things have changed a little bit sure but
057they're we do run out of spaces there's more people that would like to park than we have spaces well I would rather see the faculty get the first spots anyway staff yeah we have to get the staff here yeah that's important I think that's true yeah yeah all right safety Jim yes okay so caveat to this year um so about a month or so ago I was brought to speed at some situations that were happening at North and one of the was the uh a pipe leak a galvanized pipe in the underground track that was visual that you can see uh and in the elbow there was a split um just a little background this is old galvanized pipe we replaced the galvanized pipe in both of our buildings on our hot and cold water
058sides this is just a small section that's left and when I say small that's compared to the size of the school which is you know 500 000 square feet Jim when you say old pipe how old is this pipe 38 so yeah 1939 yeah yeah not 38 years not 38 years 1938 yes so the dinosaurs were very 85 years ago my plan all along uh was to our life safety survey is up every 10 years we did it in 2015 it's due up in 2025 we usually do the survey in 24 and start to work in 25. this was one of my higher priorities to be done at that time because I knew what passed right through and you know it's something that we needed to do but if it's not broke don't fix it
059it's still working but now it's breaking so I called our engineer our plumbing engineer he came out walked with me and we looked at that section and other sections and we both agreed that being more aggressive and getting this done especially this first one which is phase one which is that area in the underground track that's by the driver's ed classrooms should be done as soon as possible so we would like to do that for next summer and then the rest of it which is phase two and three would be done the following summer uh and that's much more complex because it's piping that goes to the white gym locker rooms it goes to the pool um so there's a lot of blowing out wall ceilings to get to it a much bigger project that's
060why you see a big number there um depending on how copper is in a year hopefully right we'll know more so that number May fluctuate down hopefully I'll be a little higher uh so air conditioners with that I talked with three Mark and Hank and we came up with a plan you know why can't we try putting this on Life Safety now as an add-on we've done that for other projects in the last two or three years we've been approved and we can use that funding towards this which would be ultimately the funding we'd be using in 2025. and then we'd get a head start and be aggressive getting this done so I certainly wouldn't want to shut down pools or areas of buildings if this got even worse and it would be hard to
061architecturally put together in you'll do it in your school year we got to do it in the summer yeah you can shut down a big area here so that's our plan we've put the application in goes through Roe first and then it goes down to the state for approval but talking with experts at White and my experience with life safety I think we have an excellent chance to get this approved I'm glad that I for I was concerned at first that it was going to be coming out of our Capital so yeah so is Mark yeah so um yes well and this at a at a time when inflation is running so high and and our our ability to keep up with that is so limited so um so we've got some stresses coming forward
062um yeah I know it's a hit you know I well it's hard to look at a big number like that and say wow you know he did all this work in mfp you know and now we're doing you know all this other work it never ends uh it really doesn't in my career you know you you do a lot of work and keeping your buildings up and I'll say I I know a lot of districts our buildings are in phenomenal shape and that's because of support from the board and from our Administration that put money towards projects that need to be done before they break down well anyone who owns a house knows it as soon as you get one thing fixed so we had hoped to make it you know until 25 to replace
063it but this is also like a pipe burst in the indoor track is not a great outcome you know much more expensive yeah plus then you have the cleanup and the repair and everything else so um we're just going to move the timetable up for work that we expected to do anyway it's just yeah well it's just the the risk is getting much greater that we can incur much more cost in terms of Damages as a result of a major major failure you can't always put a Band-Aid on it yeah so um so anyhow I'd say we got I got our monies out of the pipes yeah 38 to now yeah not bad like 85 years yeah we need to go find those people do they even make the galvanized pipe anymore no it all
064goes in as copper now well I'm sure too that you know we've probably got several connections too because tuned to similar metal Metals as well that that that's a that's always accelerate the process yeah so um yeah yeah and it's not this isn't a surprise this is something we are aware of but we were hoping hoping to get another a couple more maybe get to 86 or 87. yeah so if you get one last item that I want to um bring up and um yeah and Mark may join me and the careful Improvement list there's two uh scoreboards one from North and one for South um I estimate 200 000 that might be a little high may not be I know that the schools have been looking into some that are you know quite nice
065that could cost that much certainly would want the bus for our school district for the right price we talked internally we want to ask the board if you're comfortable with us spending some time looking at POS possible alternate Revenue sources to fund these two projects uh I personally I'm a yes and I will also say that this is something that I mean we so 16 years with the previous board or with the scoreboard 2007 so 16. so you know keeping in mind too that this is something that you're trying to as much as possible have it's going to make sense to buy a nicer you know the better boards because we're going to go another 10 15 years again before protect I mean this this needs to be something that's going to last so it
066doesn't make sense to cheap out now but if we could get some alternative uh financing resources on this I'm not so I know we've had some discussions about this in the past so some may at this point we're just asking is the board interested in us coming back later and presenting some options around alternative Revenue sources such as advertisement or branding or those kinds of things for uh a scoreboard especially with local business and what it is no I'm yeah we'd have to work through the processes but I'm saying do you want the administration to spend the time to put together something some options to bring the board later this year kind of a delay s it wouldn't be wouldn't be gonna affect that no no that shouldn't you know I we've had discussions in
067on passports about that I an opportunity for local businesses to potentially help offset costs and it benefits I mean I it seems to me to be a win-win I know we've been concerned in the past about advertising and this sort of thing but there's no agreement these are just this is just do you want to judge options to you with some options anybody who's opposed no no no okay well then the administration will start working on you know bring you what your options are and what we'd have to change in policies and some other what other local districts have done just to give you some ideas of what's out there and then we can kind of shape uh if there is something District 99 would like to do and if so what well wouldn't it
068be nice to take uh some of that two hundred thousand dollars at salotted and put it towards other things where we don't have opportunities at that sort of with that sort of cost sharing so well let's but then I guess of course in the details so we'll put together the details come back to the board with what some of those details and options are and then we can have a more robust discussion about that once we once we're ready thank you for asking sure yes we're looking to be creative to try to cut that down to one million and just a reminder as the board is aware there's going to be other significant athletic improvements including Fields flooring scoreboard inside the gymnasium spaces and the stadium spaces that are all you know staged to come
069in the in the near future as all of those current well you might be able to package some of that together you know that would be a possibility so yep for future all right so that's any other questions on thanks Jim hello thank you all right uh Jim has another one for you again hey this is an action item later on with me okay so on November 7th we had our bid opening we were thinking that we'd get bids out early so contractors would be looking to get something before the holidays to get on the schedule for next year uh and overall pretty good uh outside of me reading 92 Beds which took me an hour and 10 minutes pretty good uh 92 bitters which is great and to get that many uh we had
07023 different packages so roughly you know four to five per package um I know I listed in my memo all 23 um contractors that were the low acceptable bidders again the timeline for this work is starting in the spring and completing by the start of the 23-24 school year leading up the construction we have closed on the house you already know that and the Tenant that's living there and he's anticipating to be out by March of 23. in addition to that I attended the village plan commission two weeks ago I believe where they voted to approve this project and move it towards Council and that's for December 7th and we're expecting that to be approved by Council as well so we did a scope review and all of these met our proposals again I just
071want to go over the budget with you um I know that that was presented uh maybe a month ago where we had 4.9 and some change uh that included the purchase of the home so this bid with our costs for architectural construction and the cost for the home were slightly under a right at our targeted budget number that said in these contracts all 23 of them I put in a mount that equaled 360 000 which is 10 percent of the overall Construction to be in there as well for contingency so with a 5 000 square foot building add-on in a parking lot I certainly think that we won't even remotely go through that so I feel confident that we'll have some money come back so we'll be under budget but um all in all I
072I think pretty good and so tonight out of these 23 vendors the aggregate amount is three million five hundred seventy nine thousand one hundred thirty seven dollars and that's what I'm asking you to prove so that for me the shocking thing is just knowing that site utilities and excavation are is the most expensive part of this project okay okay and and that's a lot of that's I'm assuming some things we need to do with storm water well if you've been out there there's a pitch plus we did some borings and we have we're gonna have to put a lot of Stone in so we already know that and I'm glad that we know that's why I do those testings here too so we don't start digging and say oh my gosh you know where am
073I going to find another 500 000 uh so we're we've we've got to level it out because there's such a pitch going from South north per Village so that's part of it and some of the stone will be every bit of six to seven feet that we're gonna have to add so that is a lot and this yeah and I I know there was there was like a strike at a quarries not too long ago that drove up the price of stone and and so we're feeling some of that I'm sure still um yeah and I did see that that um what there were are there two bids in here that were from um companies in our district I think more than that more than two I know the electric is Richmond and signage yeah
074with Signs Now basically from Ogden Avenue um but a lot of the neighboring ones there's not many that are really far away right but it's nice to see some of the some of the money going to to businesses in our district so I'm happy for that so if my memory serves me correctly we had a lot of trouble with the ground when we built out t99 there was chemicals it was like a lot of chemicals yeah that was in the back of the building yeah do you remember so we got all that out of there there were no unsuitables in the borings that I took on the side of the building because obviously we're tearing that out as well uh so we could put the building there uh so it was all in the back
075we took care of that those came out good the ones on the side came out coated everything on this property came out pretty good this property has just always been a house it wasn't industry like but just imagine what the number would have been like for saying improvements if oh all right any other questions for Jim this is an action item later on this evening thank you thank you for your requests we've received them we've responded to them and as always they're posted up on our website so we'll move on to the consent agenda um before I ask the board for the motion I would just like to once again recognize District 99 Education Foundation I believe there's six grants in here yes there are let me see I got the interesting total um six
076thousand dollars in Grants yeah but they're but they're six I think it's like five teachers six grants yeah yeah so I just like to once again recognize the foundation and thank them yeah they're being so supportive does any other member want to pull anything out of the consent agenda for discussion hearing none we need a motion for the Board of Education to approve the consent agendas presented which includes the Personnel report leave of absence classified transfer of position classified appointments classified the Personnel report retirement certified resignations classified the financial Pages the intergovernmental agreement for reimbursement of nursing services with Hinsdale Township High School District 86 student tours and acceptance of donation for the District 99 education hi Chris it was Chris yeah I know well you know okay okay Espinoza Jerry pavisich aye Joanna Vasquez
077Drexler aye Mike Davenport aye Cheryl Fuller aye aye Jenny hagstrom aye and Nancy cupka aye incentives approved we'll move into the recommendations for Action first we need a motion for the Board of Education to approve contracts for the t99 build out 2022-2023 to the specified vendors for the aggregate amount of three million 579 3 million 579 thousand one hundred thirty seven dollars so moved second Mike and Joanna thank you Mike Davenport aye Joanna Vasquez Drexler aye Christopher Espinoza aye Cheryl Fuller aye Jenny hagstrom aye pavasich she stepped out and Nancy cupka aye the question carries next we need a motion for the Board of Education to hold the December 5th 2022 board meeting entirely in closed session for the purpose of the appointment employment compensation discipline performance or dismissal of specific employees specific individuals who
078serve as independent contractors in a park recreational or educational setting or specific volunteers of the district or legal counsel for the district including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee a specific individual who serves as an independent contractor in a park recreational or educational setting or a volunteer of the district or against legal counsel for the district to determine its validity so moved Mike and Joanna thank you very much Mike Davenport aye Joanna Vasquez Drexler aye Christopher Espinoza aye Cheryl Fuller aye aye Jenny hagstrom aye and Nancy cupka hi the motion just as a reminder to the board um it is entirely in closed session so it is not a meeting open to the public nor will there be any action taken at that meeting okay we'll move on to the second reception

080appreciated all right we have one comment slip for Laura hoist good evening everybody and thank you for giving me the chance to speak my name is Laura hoyce I want to First say how happy I am for the boys cross country team that they took third in state I see them running all the time from North High School past my house and they are charged up and working really hard so that is great news thank you for that I'd like to ask a series of six questions tonight that I'll follow up with an email I understand that in these settings there's not back and forth dialogue but these are things that are on my mind and and I think many parents and students Minds number one what is District 99's plan to improve student math
081and reading scores I believe during the pandemic the state reporting of District scores was waived or postponed and um would like to know whether those school performance grades will now be back up post-pass pandemic I guess that's question number two number three it's been said that JB pritzker and the State Health Department may be planning to impose covid-19 vaccinations as a mandatory requirement for students to attend school this is perhaps under discussion phase but it has been brought up and on next door neighbor I saw one parent receive a comment oh no please be assured that that's not going to happen but in any event we're pleading with this District to please get that word out as soon as someone hears whether that is a true statement that those vaccines may become part of the
082mandatory vaccination schedule for students number four have District 99 administrators and superintendent been fully vaccinated and boosted to date a lot of information has come out since that occurred equal to teachers and number five if a mandatory vaccination requirement is imposed on students will the same requirement be imposed on teachers administrators and the superintendent um I I don't understand that's yet to be determined if such a thing would come to pass and finally has District 99 continued with white supremacy and anti-racist teachings and classes classrooms at Downers Grove North and South as they did last year or has this been continued on further consideration based on the objections that we made in the past that's all I have as I said I'll follow up with an email looking for answers to those questions I do
083appreciate you thinking about those thank you okay no additional comments okay moving on to Communications and announcements uh report of the legislative legislative education network of this page I don't think there's anything from the last no we met with local legislators yeah I wrote that down that was November or October that was since the last time we met yeah I think I already read read yeah but maybe and really uh they don't expect the veto session to be much going on so we'll Circle back uh lame duck session will be the next time when we could have fireworks happen with the legislature excessive okay um adds acid we continue to discuss the impact of lower enrollment on tuition costs concerning Financial structure deficit and it's a Cooperative cost and the sustainability of current programs and
084services at present enrollment levels the board was provided with an enrollment report that tracked the enrollment numbers from the school year 2018-2019 to the current school year District administrators will be provided with a weekly enrollment dashboard report for the reviews starting in mid-november so that may have already started because we're behind teams uh the dashboard will assist with conversations around District needs and how sansad can serve each student and district sassad will monitor actual and anticipated student enrollment referrals and anticipated needs to help facilitate the discussion for staffing needs and program efficiencies before the January budget meeting Terry um well as we just approved the six thousand dollars in Grants and um so that's what we were working on and we're going to be doing some may and may is mental health month and we're
085going to be working with a group called Grit 2. and um working on some webinars and different activities and we're bringing in District 58 and we're going to be seeing what 66 and 68 have to say and bring some of those students in because a lot of it is Junior High and um you know if we can you know maybe catch students that are having issues and worried about things at that age then it's easier for us to you know deal with some of those situations when they get to the high school level and also we've decided that our next year on the foundation we are going to be focusing on building our board we need more people on the board so if anyone wants to volunteer for that you can talk to Julia Beckman
086and um it's all on the website and we want to make a plan for our board and where we're going to be going in the future so we're going to be focusing on that for the next year so um you know we we do need help right now we only have seven members on our board and um to do some of the activities that we enjoy doing we need we need help so I'm going to be very honest if you have someone yes reach out to Julia she'll be talking with them and explaining what their responsibilities would be well we have no deadline on that oh yeah yeah it's all on the website let's try to get it yeah yeah so um uh you know if anybody knows anyone who would be willing to step
087up and and that I know it's a tough time for that and um so we're really not bad people we're kind of fun and we usually have cake or cupcakes every meeting well we do we do our thing Chris iasb yeah so I attended the delegate conference the assembly this weekend the highlights were Simon kemporth Jr the president was re-elected as president of the ISB Mark harms was the voted as a vice president so both serving uh there were in the continued to serving all the recommendations that we looked at by the ISB passed accordingly based on the recommendations so good amount of dialogue back and forth there was some issues with some of the rules during the convention there was a procedural like back and forth where some of the members had issue with
088figuring out how to how to vote on certain things but other than that it was a pretty smooth conference did anybody want to share anything they learned at the conference I will oh yeah you want to go ahead Terry well well it's not our muscle for it yeah I mean does uh so the first General Session um I was uh that was pretty terrific um seiku Andrews spoke he talked a lot about yes and um you know it's good to say yes but then you know and here's what I'm going to do here's what I can do talk about telling stories to Foster commonalities and purpose and identify the things that Bond us together so that second generation the second General Session does anybody else who was there want to say something about that yeah
089yeah um that was Amanda Ripley and she talked about conflict entrepreneurials entrepreneurs and uh who basically As I understood it people who like to humiliate others for their own gains and humiliation and fear are at the root of most conflict so talked about dealing with that and encouraging empathy and identifying the root cause of a conflict and not overly generalizing about people who you don't understand and think differently than you you know we all have a tendency to do that and you really she made a point how you really can't generalize about 75 million people you don't agree with you know I mean all on you know the country is pretty split and you know those are it's so that's a big mistake we make uh what else do I want to say i i
090attended a few I attended several several workshops one about post-election covert recovery um talking about dealing with uh more issues with unfunded mandates funding for special ed outplacement some people brought up issues with supports for migrants in their communities and what a what a what a tremendous challenge that is and how wonderful it is for the communities you know that are stepping up but one of the things I didn't understand is that that these migrants have to be here for 150 days before they're allowed to work but the money runs out before that 150 days gets here and there's people in the community that would love to hire so you know it's so it's it's a real it's a real problem um and uh yeah so uh also uh the state superintendent Ayala was actually
091in in attendance at that meeting didn't uh didn't uh participate in it at all but they acknowledged that she apparently she just announced her retirement so it'll be interesting to see um you know who lines up to fill that spot so um I attended another Workshop called you can't make this stuff up so it's a legal review about crazy things that happen and uh and uh another session about right what you write and say may be used against you you were in that one you want to say a few things about that one oh I don't mean to ban this on the spot I keep I did keep one thing from that that I wanted to yeah it was an open meetings act review one thing I just I took away from it they said
092in the words of Norman Schwarzkopf the truth of the matter is that you always know the right thing to do the hard part is doing it and so you know generally um if you think you really shouldn't be putting something in writing the answer is usually pretty clear too yeah yeah I was um I was at a legislative Round Table um employment shortage came up there's 2040 open positions this year twice as many support staff openings open yeah 2040. in the state of Illinois and then there's an Ever decreasing number of teacher graduates and uh and then it was also pointed out that I mean there's employment shortages in every industry um so it's this isn't unique to schools right now however this is a problem that's been you know in the making for several
093years and and I think these last few years have really exacerbated that that problem and then uh third General Session oh Terry and I were at that you want to say a few things there about Chef Jeff he was it was great Jeff um is a self-made man and uh by the time he was 19 he had sold enough drugs to be a millionaire and um a little bit after that the FBI came knocking at his door Ten Years to Life and 10 years to life in prison and uh one of the things that he said is he was very fortunate to have gone to a federal penitentiary rather than State because he was there with a lot of white-collar criminals um you know the Bernie madoffs of this world and um he learned a
094lot and how to um present himself in a in a better Manner and he found that he loved cooking and so he worked his way up from um you know the sous chef all the way up to the executive chef at the Bellagio in um Vegas and um he wrote a book he had Will Smith produced his movie and um and he was on Oprah which was the highlight of his life he's now 58 years old and it just went to show that you have to get that out of your mind how you were brought up in certain situations and how he improved himself and um he even learned to walk differently so that he could present himself um to I'm going to say backers probably because and now he has four um shows on
095the Food Network and just a really Dynamic guide and he's helping um kids in the South Central LA area find what they need to in themselves and passions and um so just taking kids that are getting suspended and put in alternate alternative programs he's one of those alternative programs so he's really yeah doing a lot for the community yeah and it was just really very inspiring and um what he said was those closest to the problem are closest to the solution so you know he felt it was incumbent upon himself to you know he'd been given this gift and um so and he started he opened up by apologizing you know for the harms that he he did I mean that he he recognized that and owns that and it feels it's his life work
096to to try to help others not yeah not follow that same path and and he also talked a lot about focusing on strengths instead of weaknesses you know and how some students no matter what are just never going to be great at math but that shouldn't hold them back from being able to get into a good culinary program or something like that which is you know um something I I really struck me because I thought here was another example of how you know we you know just using you know we had a question tonight about sat tests again right so um you know we spent so many years teaching to the test and trying to and making that be the that's the that's the Benchmark and well the fact it is you know we all
097have different strengths and weaknesses and and and to hold some student back just because they didn't do so well on a test doesn't mean they can't be incredibly successful so we've talked about this before but he was just another he was he's a living example of that um but uh that that was the third General Session it was so it's a really wonderful well worth very inspirational so yes yeah thank you anybody else I went to one about amplifying student voices with seats at the board table that I thought was really interesting there was a panel of students and teacher or staff from Oswego High School District and they had um they have done a lot of you know they've expanded not only the role of the student board members but they've created a student
098advisory councils at at each of their schools and then those students sort of you know report to the student board members what their concerns are and they they also then on some occasions let the students vote at the at the board meetings although the vote doesn't necessarily count it's it's good to see sometimes what the students perspective is on some of the issues that we vote on um and so they just did they did a lot they focused on um I think they called it ylpar which is youth-led participation in research and tried to you know look at things like mental health sexual harassment between students and school they do a lot of surveys and gathered data so it was just really interesting to see if looking at an expanded role or you know even
099giving more roles to the students in the schools and bringing it to the board many others I'll go ahead I just wanted to say one thing is I think one of the most important things about the conference is is that we get to know each other much better you know we we break bread together we we talk about things that are not board related we talk about you know our families and our what we're doing and I think that um that is one of the most important things that we come away with and I think all of us you know enjoy talking to each other and and that sort of thing so I just wanted to say that as a yes I enjoyed being with you as well too thank you and those of you
100who missed it we did have milk and cookies Saturday night so that was kind of a nice thing just us so it's good I'm sure I'll hit something oh yeah yeah okay I went to a session about kind of digital organization so you know the administrative part of being a board member right so beyond just all the reading but how to organize and it was all around Google kind of how to use Google because we use Gmail and how to organize create folders so I thought that was a good one because we do have an administrative piece of theater board member too with all the emails we get and emails about different subject matters so I enjoyed that one in fact it sounded as if in the room quite a few people were struggling with
101different parts of managing our kind of administrative usual life so one of the things I learned is that could say I kind of know what you say things on our phones but you can open those a few clothes the same on the phone the problem was I I always had the hardest time trying to find it where is it where is it yeah kind of learned how to even file it once I did it kind of stored manage it from my phone as well as well Place we've got to get them quickly from my from the mobile so I enjoyed that one I my time is a question and it's one that I attended the international Global scholar and I believe it's it's a certificate um I think Naperville is a 203 uh is doing
102this and it's kind of similar to something we have here where the students work on their own projects this is like an independent study they pick any topic that they want it's their responsibility to contact two experts in their field um like one girl was very interested in the Ebola virus she contacted um experts who were from Africa and South America and she went to work on it now she's going to and she did everything herself but and she even went to Africa for this when she is finished with this and it is supervised by a teacher throughout the whole thing but they do all the work they just have the support of the teacher but when she graduates she gets a certificate certificate and she can go on to work now she is going
103to opt not to go to college first but she's going to go to Africa to work and um I I thought it was really impressive I don't know intend to do something like that here but it seemed like a very worthwhile certificate to have for someone who does not want to go college but they even can go to college with it and and perhaps even get some college credit sounds really interesting it was an interesting you know I don't know about their specific program we can look and see what they're doing but um I think you're going to see a lot of high schools in Illinois with the new College and Career Readiness and the service learning component that you're going to see a lot of schools dabbling in in a variety of different Service
104Learning opportunities yeah well I'll take a moment to recognize the fact that we are one of the few school districts that at some point in the weekend all seven board members attended uh portions of the con of the the conference this is you know the premier professional learning event for school board members and the fact that our board gives up their part of either a work day or the weekend or the whole weekend to to go and learn is uh you know a great valuable tool for us as a team that you continue to learn and push your skills and see what's going on in other school districts and I greatly appreciate your efforts in professional development for yourselves and setting that example for all of us in the district so thank you thank you
105I had a great time good learning is fun yeah yeah okay anything else upcoming board meetings December 5th will be the workshop meeting at 6 30 p.m here in the administrative service center yep December 12th will be the regular business meeting again 6 30 here at the administrative service um Center so do we have a motion to adjourn so movement Mike and Terry all those in favor aye aye all those opposed thank you
