shirelle fuller here jenny hagstrom here terry pavich here joanna vazquez drexler here nancy kupka here scarlett o'hara here and jade toledano here i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all hey perspectives all right good evening everyone uh as you know we have probably 60 some clubs in student activity organizations and those are constantly changing based on student interest not long before kovid shut a lot of our activities down our orchestra orchesis dance team was for dance club and since that time i think they're up to 60 or 80 members and are doing multiple events so as one of our fastest growing groups i thought i'd invite them here to share some of

the things they've done most recently hi i'm renetta jacob i'm a senior and i've been in orchesis for four years hi i'm liana o'rourke i'm a senior and i've been an orchestra three years hi i'm bianca pedoza i'm a senior and i've been an orchest for four years so today we ask ourselves what does orchesis mean to us orcas orchesis for me is a judgment-free zone to welcome dancers of all levels ethnicities genders and so on together we express our passion for dance through all types of music and beats we come together and stand as a team to spread these varieties of dance throughout the community yeah we're noticing it perfectly focuses is such a welcoming diverse and passionate community of dancers i feel it's a place where students can express themselves and really feel

seen especially because we have so many genres of dance i joined orchesis my sophomore year i had been a figure skater when i was younger and was involved in musical theater before but i had very little formal dance experience so i was a little nervous going into it but one of the things that's so special to me is that i felt like i had a place in orchards right away there was always someone to help me out if i was having trouble with choreography or just needed some cheering on it's a super encouraging environment where you can grow as a dancer but also learn so much about other students i feel so lucky and happy to be a part of this amazing community for me orchesis is a very inclusive and fun club that i'm

absolutely proud to be a part of many dance styles are represented here and it gives people the opportunity to express their creativity in the form of dance to be honest i had little to no dance experience when i joined which is why i was really hesitant at first although i started out struggling with picking up choreography i pushed through my limits and seeked ways how i could improve eventually i discovered that dancing was an ultimate passion of mine orchesis will forever hold a very special place in my heart because it helped me grow so much as a person and develop many valuable skills and lessons i wouldn't be the person i am today if i didn't join orchesis so for now for how and how and why it started so as a freshman in high

school i felt like something was missing there wasn't a space where all dance forms could express themselves there were people who didn't make the dance team yet still had the urge to dance and there were people even on the dance team that wanted to dance even more i felt like something was pushing me to create a club that nobody had ever seen before at dgs a place where everyone belonged and was welcome so together my friend blessy and i approached mrs hendrickson knowing her dance her love for dance we created this club called orchesis our idea of orchesis focused on being inclusive so we made auditions no cut and welcomed all styles of dance as a bollywood dancer i finally had the opportunity to show and teach the community my culture so now there are

more than 50 students involved in the student-run company and we create a wonderful annual showcase when i was a freshman in high school i knew that i wanted to get involved in an extracurricular at dgs i just didn't know exactly like what clubs or sports that i wanted to join luckily mrs henriksen was my p.e teacher at the time and she told my class about the new dance club called orchesis where anyone can join regardless of their dance experience she encouraged us to sign up for it despite being new to dancing at the time i would look forward to rehearsals every tuesday because i love the positive environment that orchesis provides for everyone and now we will talk about this year's showcase this year's showcase was very exciting performing in front of a large audience

once again felt so amazing and i'm beyond grateful that we have the opportunity to have a more normal show before we graduate high school yeah i agree the stage crew also did an amazing job helping us out during tech week and they did a beautiful job with the lighting as well we love getting to share what we have been working on all year and like biaka said it was such a great experience to end off our senior year in orchesis so now about our previous showcases um besides my passion for bollywood i was able to try out other styles of dance which i thought i would never be able to do so it was interesting to see other students come up with such creative ideas behind their dance pieces one example i remember was one

dance had a message such as not having to follow this beauty standards of our modern day society i started out in orchesis only knowing how to dance hip-hop but eventually i also was able to try out different dance styles such as jazz and contemporary the previous orchestra showcases have helped me become more open on trying new things and express myself through dancing i was also amazed at people's creativity passion and inspiration seeing on their members is purpose on why they choreograph and dance is what makes every show special and meaningful now i'd like to share about how we stayed connected through the pandemic specifically during remote learning at the beginning of junior year i started running the orchesis dance company instagram account i'm so excited and thankful mrs henriksen gave me that opportunity i wanted

to highlight different dancers recognize seniors and things like that as i started posting i began to realize i felt a lot more connected with both students in orchesis and my own friends and classmates i realized that connection was something i really needed and i wanted to give that to everyone else so that became my new goal with managing the social media some other things we did to connect with each other during road learning is a secret santa gift exchange on the screen you can see some pictures from zoom and then some officers last year choreographed a valentine's day themed dance so everyone learned it we compiled the videos and we were still able to dance together now i will talk about the addison trail diversity show so in march we were invited to perform our

photograph dance in the diversity show this was an amazing opportunity to share our piece as well as watch other students from schools in the west suburban conference there are a lot of performances for example there was spoken word in all girls mariachi bands singers and other dance groups including the dgn steppers we got to ride the bus with them and they were so amazing and it was just a way to celebrate unique talents and stories through different forms of the arts so now about the spirit assembly so about a week ago we were asked to dance for the bollywood for pep assembly and it was amazing to finally be able to show my own peers what my culture looks like we had a sludge on the background to explain each type of dance in the

bollywood world and which area the dance came from so essentially it was a history lesson but in an entertaining way we also included a group of boys who to dance with us so they took in a dance which is something that they thought they would never be able to do and it was just an amazing feeling to be cheered by my fellow peers and know that we all support each other as a community besides this diversity show at addison trail it felt very exciting to be able to perform photograph at the spirit assembly in front of the whole school and perform with the most amazing people i've met it was such a wonderful and memorable experience this spirit assembly was definitely one of my favorite memories from dgs i loved the enthusiasm from the staff

and students and i thought it was so cool when everyone started waving their phone flashlights and singing photograph together it was just such a beautiful moment for us as dancers but also for us as seniors and getting to have one last assembly together at tgs thank you so much for inviting us to speak about the dgs orchesis dance company and share our experiences does anyone have any questions so are any of you planning to pursue dancing after um i will definitely be doing the dance club at my college yes clubs yeah yeah um are there any guys that want to join your computer yeah we do we have like about [Music] two or three oh just two or three [Laughter] all right let's encourage them is this photograph the name of a song yeah it's

a photograph by ed sheeran but like the concept behind the dance was like the memories yeah right we're def leppard it was a no-cut club that is so cool see even i could dance with them that's what's really frightening well what also is neat is that you've got dancers from the dance team the you know the school dance team also participating because it's giving them another outlet which is which is really well i mean they're not tired enough how many how many members did you say you have for more than 50 yeah different dance groups and like different dances too like we come all together for the annual showcase okay and how did you pick the name it was just it's like a greek and yeah um i think it's a greek word for the

art of dance okay oh okay it's an educational session for us and um you'll have to be sure to uh pass along our thanks and congratulations to mrs henriksen because i you mentioned her name i don't know how many times here she must really be special because i'm guessing that this is a little above and beyond what she really has to do right so terrific well thank you for being here [Applause] all right uh student board members our final four number one wait a minute yeah [Laughter] is that just us it's been such a drab year yeah i wish there'd been more going on yeah you know what i know it's a little boring a little black faster it's fine um okay no in all seriousness this has been an awesome opportunity i think both

me and scarlet can agree on that but north okay so may we are starting the end of the school year seriously two weeks left for seniors three for uh everybody else starting in our fine arts our dgn theater is doing their last play the spring play it's called the curious incident of the dog in the night time it sounds very interesting very intriguing i know they've put a lot of effort into this as they always have and i'm really excited to see how it goes and all their efforts to be seen on the stage also in our fine arts last week we had our spring art show and it was incredible to see our visual artists have their work displayed their efforts displayed specifically i think something that was really cool to see um was

our art history class because we only have one section of that i have a combined manuscript on display which i thought it was really interesting to see it's something unique it's something that you don't see every day uh moving on to sports we've had our spring sports do amazing so far they are doing so well for our seniors we've had many senior nights already as they start to wrap up seriously the school year and specifically i want to give a shout out to our volleyball team our boys volleyball team who have had a game at home recently to honor mason who passed away earlier this school year it was amazing to see the community come out and support our team and see how our community really unites in these moments so that was touching for

journalism we have the state champ in news writing kate rose at north she plays in sectionals and she is our state champ which is so exciting congratulations to her [Music] um as you can see by scarlet nice shirts and north and south we celebrated decision day for seniors which is so exciting as we decide where we're heading after district 99 because district 99 has prepared us very well for our future wherever we're going and it was so it was really real to see everybody all my friends with their college grade i'm like okay it's real we're leaving um but i'm so excited to see where life takes us and it's important to always see the positive and everything and see yeah see where life is heading and it's going to be good it's all about

perspective so we also had our academic awards starting to come out so our teachers are able to recognize those students who go above and beyond in their classrooms for math science awards and it's amazing to see those students be recognized for their efforts and everything that they do in the classroom and beyond this week we have started ap testing today which is so much fun we started today with ap gov this morning it's going on this week next week and as always i feel like i'm i say it very often a test score doesn't define us but always all the luck and so much effort that is put into that last week we had the recognition of national drug awareness week our c triple s department uh sent down many emails and many announcements about

how to avoid drug usage and reaching out for help in those situations which i think is something very important for us to recognize and this week we have staff appreciation week for all our teachers and everybody else in our buildings and it's something so easy i know dr thiele you tweeted about it it's something so important it's so simple to say thank you and i think it goes a really long way for some people so i think saying a simple thank you to our teachers is always worthwhile and like i said it's may it's very exciting uh it is mental health mental health awareness month this morning erica's lighthouse did a healthful is your cup activity out in our main street lobby uh to see for us to be able to reflect on how we're

feeling right if we're stressed if we're overwhelmed if we're overflowing and it was a really nice activity to start the month and right around ap season and we will be continuing that this week and it's something that i'm very passionate about so yeah that's north in a nutshell um i committed to ie university it is a really good university in spain so i will be leaving very far soon espana um no district 99 has prepared me very well for an international education i'm really excited it's going to be three years for my bachelor of laws which is great and they have a partnership with northwestern so i'll be taking their north western track okay come back for my jd in two years so at 23 your girl will be a lawyer very good very good

i'm going to be highlighting a lot of the same things that jade highlighted from north so all of our spring sports are still telling them as their seasons progress i want to shout out our girls softball team they have a conference win streak of 89 games so far so it's been going on for a couple years i know they it's very important to them and every conference game they keep adding another win to that streak spirit week was a ton of fun i mentioned that last week last time i gave an update we capped it off with our first indoor assembly since before covid we saw performances from our orchesis dance club and the variety of the styles bollywood and contemporary our caribbean soul club also performed and our cheer team taught us a little

roller coaster cheer after classes competed against each other the senior class came out the winners we won our coveted spirit jug so that was very exciting and i want to thank our ace club for hosting this really awesome week we're really glad that it was back this year it's always a ton of fun as jade mentioned yesterday was may 1st so our seniors have decided where they're going post-secondary as a celebration all our seniors wore something to represent their next steps whether that be college the workforce or the military i just want to wish all of our seniors good luck as they begin this next chapter of their lives we all know they'll do awesome things and this wednesday will also be our senior awards to highlight all the achievements of the class of 2022.

today also kicked off as jade said ap testing so good luck to all the students who are taking those tests they're long but you know if you take the class you're prepared for them i also want to congratulate five of our journalism students who meddled at state and how hard they work for to all their different events i don't completely understand everything that they do for journalism but i know that what they do they're passionate about and that's all that matters our spring musical was also fantastic the cast and crew of legally blonde did an amazing job over the course of the two days with teacher cameos which was also a fun little touch and this week we are celebrating staff appreciation week so from all of the self students thank you to our teachers

staff counselors and everyone who helps us be successful on a daily basis they really make a difference in our students lives and with only a few short weeks until school is over for the year our students are working hard to wrap up their school years as they look forward to their summer and we're in the home stretch and we're excited to see what the summer and next school year brings thank you and you are going to i'm going to ohio state um i'll be majoring in biology on the pre-med track fantastic that's right thank you both fabulous board members thank you don't celebrate yet they've got one more one more meeting we'll be here may 16th oh goodness no there's a whole thing there's a whole thing coming i thought there was a homeless we

have a whole thing okay [Music] this is just their last report yeah this is our last report they're not getting off the hook that they've got another meeting we'll be here one more meeting wonderful nevertheless you bring up a very good point we would be remiss if we did not reiterate and that is it is teacher appreciation yes an administrator and for all you guys do and uh there is uh opportunity on our website that's what i tweeted out earlier for anybody in the community to go and leave a personal note for any staff member that has impacted their students this year or any time in the past it's always nice to get those kind words of thanks it is but let's not forget you're all teachers too yes and we appreciate you all right

we won't make you wait till we'll sleep all right we have any reception or visit nope nope okay um here we go strategically i'm getting there i'm not going to do it in three minutes but i'm telling you all right all right uh at the next board meeting the board will be asked to take action on the strategic plan uh this has been an engagement process for the entire year involving a variety of different uh committees our last step was putting together uh the mission vision and value statements just like before it works through a variety of committees those that involved students family members staff members just like each step along the way did today i'm going to bring to you kind of how that strategic plan turns into a strategic roadmap and guides our

work moving forward so as i said throughout this i remember we hired a consultant to help lead us through this work they did a wonderful job of gathering feedback from many different audiences so we've talked about the strategic plan which is really those pieces on the top which is the mission vision values so the mission tries to describe in a single sentence what we try to do every day the vision tries to talk about in a single sentence kind of what our product is what we're creating as a school district the values are exactly that the values that we use as we do that work and then the strategic directions we've talked about in several board meetings in the past that's the actual work what we're committing to do those are kind of the overarching

ideas moving forward and then each year as the board is aware we set tasks and outcomes that the board tracks throughout the year as we do that administrative work at the end of each year i bring the border report it's our end-of-year proj progress summary now that will change to end-of-year strategic plan progress summary uh now that we will have an updated strategic plan in place and then after the board receives that report we go back and set new tasks and outcomes for the next year we just keep going in that loop until we feel it's time to come back together and write a new strategic plan all right so after all of the work with all of the groups this is our recommended mission statement every day the district 99 community works to provide

a foundation for students to confidently pursue a future of their choosing our vision so what we're do what we're producing right district 99 will graduate students are equipped to realize their potential and positively impact their community and the larger world and then i won't read all of these to you the board is humans in advance but uh really i i strongly like these statements you know that these are the values that we have right we care we trust we belong we prepare and we evolve all of those feed into those strategic directions and expectations right so these in the past we called like gold domains right it's kind of this is what we're doing uh to accomplish those mission that mission and vision while we stay true to our values the board has seen these

many times before um but just to reiterate i'll give you the top piece which is so when we talk about it right it's the direction is that main heading and then the expectations of how we accomplish that strategic direction are listed underneath so we'll do this one just to kind of give you the format and to give everyone the format so the strategic direction is an equitable and supportive environment and then the expectations are what fall underneath that okay so what will happen now the board remembers in the past i would bring you tasks and outcomes for each of the goals underneath that you'll receive the same thing now the kind of overall domain as it was in the past would be an equitable and supportive environment and then for each one of these expectations

underneath we'll provide the board an idea of how we're what tasks and outcomes are we working on over the course of the year to meet each of those expectations to make those things happen all right so in an equitable and supportive are equitable and supportive environment in growth of student ownership and agency in the area of increased student engagement in post-secondary planning and in the area of recruitment retention and support of high quality teachers and staff so the next steps at the next board meeting i will bring this to you as a recommendation that the board accepts the strategic roadmap this is like the final review so if there's something in here that a board member has concerns about please reach out to me immediately so because i'd like to go back to the committees

and talk about it if there's something that stands out that you're concerned about otherwise this will come back as is at the next board meeting for approval and then after that we'll start getting to work as we always do in may and june in setting those tasks and outcomes for the next school year so that in july we can bring you the plan usually in august we approve it and we're up and running for the next school year any discussion questions regarding the process have you taken uh for lack of a better description these domains and overlaid them on top of what we've been doing and have you not yet that would be kind of the next okay step uh we were we talked about that early on with the committees that were coming together

and they were very cautious about like this isn't just rebranding this was from like the parents and the students that were in the room like we don't want come up with this and then you just figure out how to fit what you're already doing inside of this we're giving you the directions for the next five to seven years there might be stuff there's likely stuff that you're doing that fits into this but we don't want you to crosswalk it they gave us the directions of start clean start with this and as you work through how you accomplish those things sure there's stuff we're doing but don't reverse engineer it from here's what we're doing now let's try to squeeze it into the new so certainly um so it just i'll be really curious to see

how this impacts what we do going forward because i'm guessing that when you do that overlay that there's some places where we're doing where we're too heavy with something not enough focus on something else and um that's what you'd hope would happen since we didn't reverse engineer it yeah i think as we look at those strategic directions we talked about this a few board meetings ago one of the key words in there is ensuring that these things happen right so there's a much more focus of providing evidence of completion of those things which we've done in the past but it's different of overarching as an organization of doing it versus ensuring that you did that for each individual student right we talk a lot about in general as a school district this is what we

do this kind of takes the next step of are we making sure that we're doing these things for each and every student right so when we take um when we take a look at what our on here where is it our our vision right the vision statement which was to realize their potential and positively impact their community in the larger world one of the problems we've always had is is how do we measure our success you know district 58 for instance you know all they have to do is look at what's happening to those students as they matriculate to district 99 or other schools and see what you know how well they were prepared how are they doing whereas we don't get that ready feedback right and so and when we're talking about not just

from colleges but also from the workplace from the military you know so i'd be really curious to know how how we can measure our success with this um i think that's a real challenge with this vision i agree with the vision but measuring that success is going to be difficult it will be yeah that continues to be an ongoing challenge for all high schools but definitely we will be working at that okay i had one concern and it's a small but under on slide 13 and recruitment retention and support of high quality teachers and staff the word ensure always makes me pause and the first bullet ensure that staff represent and reflect the diverse students and families served in district 99 laudable we've been trying to do it for years i don't know that you

can insure that just because we know that the employment base just isn't there correct so just maybe some thought to like strive towards or because i i well you can set a lofty goal right and and and sure indicates you're going to accomplish that you're going to accomplish it and while it would be ideal to have our staff reflect the diversity of our students we have not no school has really been successful yet in doing so just because it doesn't it in our defense it doesn't say proportionally so all right we can make in-route inroads in [Music] yeah it doesn't say proportionally it would be impossible to do that with what the the workforce is out there available to us well i've often thought i mean it's impossible to achieve perfection but it's not unreasonable

to make perfection your goal in something knowing that you're the only way you're going to get there is if you aim for it you know so i i guess once again thinking back to the measure right do we consider it a failure if we fall short of ensuring that every staff right no not if we go into it with the understanding that this is a goal right uh and while it may be difficult or even impossible to really achieve um we're this is what we're aiming for i can agree with strive ensure like the shorts that stanford's responsibilities adapted not that they we shouldn't strive for all those things i'm not trying to i just i don't i i think it's too easy for us to be off the hook if we're not saying we're

going to ensure that i i strongly believe that every student that comes here should be able to find themselves somewhere at school and that's what that first one talks about so you could say staff shall represent and reflect the diverse students and families served in district 9 and i read that the same way as saying and sure right you know it's this is this is what we're aiming for this is our goal and you know we don't just because we don't we can't necessarily achieve that 100 percent doesn't mean that that's not we we strive for yeah but ensure i think is a much stronger word than we shall well it's a measure of importance right i mean how important it is correct that when i bring you tasks and outcomes that will that'll be

when the board can say well is that really an achievable outcome okay but i think these statements need to be lofty they need to be these strong standards that's what this community expects that's what this administration expects all right so uh at the next board meeting this will come forward for approval all right hybrid block schedule i know it's already approved but uh this last week we had drop-in q a sessions dad and i were at south uh gina and courtney were at north as well as some of our teachers teacher leaders helped in these sessions and i just thought it was appropriate to share with the board you know we just get better at explaining it and explaining it and after meeting with the staff for a day that the board would benefit from

seeing some of the key slides we used with the staff so with the community so we just thought we'd bring it back here plus as we talk about the strategic plan inside of that access period and resource periods is where a lot of this material will happen that's inside the strategic plan so we shared with everybody once again the key benefits of the hybrid block the board has seen this many times i really like this graphic that the team came up with for uh the staff to see this is just pretty much the skeleton right there's no classes in it there's like this is really a clean way of looking at it and what it helped a lot of people understand is right now when we look at our current schedule people think about here's

what i do first period for the week here's what i do second they think about the week very horizontally right and the new schedule as we talked about it with staff it became very apparent like if you just think of it more vertically than horizontally the week makes a lot more sense right so monday tuesday friday are obviously all the same one through eight you know so you're thinking about those days from beginning to end one through eight when you move to wednesday you're thinking about your odds you move to thursday you're thinking about your even periods and when you just kind of change that mindset of horizontal to vertical all of a sudden the schedule became a lot more simple for people to digest especially as you stripped away kind of what was rotating

inside of here like what am i doing this day here it is right uh we talked about how the different lengths and durations of class periods lasted and then we filled in for an example for like here's a stu we did for a staff example a student example now to say like now look at it vertically day to day how that feels how that flows you know it it's different than what it is now but it's not as complex and when you just look at here's what i'm doing today uh it gets pretty easy as you move from place to place we talked about how access period is going to work how we'll take attendance that students will be grouped by grade level that staff members will so we talked in our group ed and

i as an example that this year or next year maybe ed and i are partner teaching a group of students we have 24 students between us they are all 10th graders the next year we'll have that same group of 10th graders ed and i together as 11th graders and then we'll have that same group then again as 12th graders and those students will graduate and then ed and i pick up a new group of ninth graders together and go through four years with them and how that's a different dynamic of getting to know students in a different fashion where i'm not grading those students and i'm meeting with them to support them and i'm meeting with them year after year after year and we're seeing each other grow through this process is a very different

experience for our students and for our staff you know i'll probably be meeting and partnering up with a teacher that's not in my department right and you know it just will change a lot of the dynamics and relationships in our schools we talked about the programming the board has seen this in the past of the actual things that will occur during access seen this slide as well we talked to them about specifically at the beginning of the semester there's a lot of coaching up on how all of this works and expectations for the year we have some different things in there that occur every year at the uh throughout the year and then as the semester goes on students get more and more opportunities to go out and get help from teachers we talked about

resource period which is when their lunch period rolls through the block schedule if you remember in some of the large group activities that we'll do opposite some kind of study hall time and then some of the activities which the board has also seen that we're talking about doing second semester and then into the future as well we talked about how remember professional development rotates into this new structure so when the teachers launch period shows up they're participating in in professional development one of the key things rob and our team has been working on is teachers in their first three years what their experience is in professional development and then how that differs then from our veteran teachers here on staff so what you're looking at is kind of a rough very rough draft of what

that might look like for our first second third year teachers as they work through kind of learning the district and our expectations all right that's it for schedule any uh questions anything new i popped up in your head that you had to ask about in there a couple of things we heard in the government class yeah yeah sure yeah uh well mike and uh and i and had the opportunity to sit at south's government class was it last week yeah week before yeah last week and uh well we had two good questions that came up one of them was about uh a student came up and and put a map on the on on the screen of bus routes and there was a specific bus route uh that he was concerned about that i don't

know if you remember it the bus drops them off the students farther away from where they all live off but and it goes past all of their homes when it doesn't drop them off and he made the argument that the bus should drop them off there because it's close to all their homes and had a map and like had mapped out the entire route and from our perspective it seemed that assuming that there was no reason that the bus couldn't drop them off at that spot pending like uh dangerous situations for whatever reason that that they should be able to be dropped off closer to their homes because i guess he said it's like uh it's like a cul-de-sac and they drop them off at like the bottom but then most of them live up

like the top and then it the the bus goes like out around he had a map i told him to come to the department the board meeting bring that to the main office have him see mr davis but yeah some of the cul-de-sac are not big enough for a bus to make a radius turn yeah it depends on which one but tell them to come to the main office and ask for mr davis and he'll go through it okay we have kids make suggestions yeah yeah well there were there were some some busing questions related to how that was gonna work with the hybrid schedule yeah so several things related to busing remember we're adding additional routes in the morning to shorten up the length of time that students are on buses we shifted arrival

and drop off times and then district 68 adjusted some of their start times in coordination with this to make routes work better and then we actually had like a bus summit like we spent an afternoon together with 58 68 and 99 so that their team could work with our team to look at areas where we could improve some of our routes and busing and think a little differently about a few things so they've continued to work on that in the second half of the year and i imagine that we'll see some improvements come next fall as a result of that work we heard some apprehension too about the length of the of on the wednesday thursdays uh the the longer periods and and uh and we must have reiterated oh it was we were there

for well you were you were there for the class before i got there so you for like four classes um but we heard in the three that i was there just this same sort of theme about how can you expect us to sit you know in a classroom what's expected yeah and we kept answering that that same way um so i i'm hopeful that once once this gets launched change is difficult people are concerned i tried sharing chris tried sharing i mean been really be really easy for us just to do status quo here right i mean why go through all this if we don't think it's going to be better if we don't think learning's going to be improved students are going to be better supported and and grow in this uh the easier

solution would be just to keep going the way we're going everybody's happy you know but that's not what we're about here is it you know we're about doing things better and always looking for ways that we can improve so we try to share that with the students as well i don't i think you know i thought some of them were receptive to that and others were still pretty skeptical it's all right let's see what happens i hope it happens really well and and also the you know concern that well what if this doesn't work you know and i said well you know first of all we're expecting students to share with us their experiences and we've been expecting it we're yes and we have you know we've shared that we have an independent group that's

going to be helping to evaluate the success of all this and and that we're hoping with continual feedback that this can get refined and improve but if it's not going well at all we're not gonna keep doing something something that's bad we're sure that we aren't that proud you know i mean it's i i mean seriously this is you know you have to you know it's easy to keep things going the way they are right but um if you want to achieve greatness it means you have to take some level of risk you know you have to venture out into something that you maybe you haven't done before we're not reinventing the wheel here no this is something that other districts have done as well so to say that it can't work here is a

non-starter because we know that it's worked in other places and we're not that different we're so um hopefully we can get people on board i i really felt like um in listening to the students that the pandemic really it kind of hurt us here a little bit right people had uh a poor experience we asked how many thought that you know remote learning was great and nobody raised their hand shocking um and i some of our students right are remembering from remote learning that we we we were doing things on a hybrid block schedule and they're relating that to this and meet with students and remind them that their teachers in that setting were planning primarily for their students being virtual the majority of students in that setting were virtual now you're planning for all

of your students to be there with you it's a you're not you're not planning to do the same thing at all right so when i remind students of that they're many times like yeah you're right that that's very different you know so it's just reminding them that yes it was these longer blocks of time but most of most everybody was virtual at that point so it's a very very different experience as we all know yeah yeah yeah it was fun yeah it was it was a good experience all right we have one action item this evening and an exciting one it is uh we are in hiring season so quite often in may at our may workshop we'll throw in uh approving some personnel this includes many teachers and an administrator um he's here this
