mike davenport here christopher espinoza here jawell fuller here jenny hankstrom here terry pavisic here nancy kupko here scarlett o'hara here and jade toledano here thank you we have a quorum let's stand for the pledge i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay i believe we start with student perspectives from south high good evening everyone we're excited to have mr zona rega here with some members of one of our newer clubs we've always had different versions of gaming clubs and these guys do a lot of video gaming and they their club is called smash brothers and if you're not a gamer like me you might not know that's a specific game yeah

they will be our first group to compete in the illinois high school association esports in the video gaming club so we've invited a few of the members of the team to come and talk to you today so i'm going to turn it over to them hello my name is edmund lucas i'm in i'm a hospital i'm a sophomore in downers grove south and i wanted to talk to you about smash bros and specifically um why join every day you know it's funny as it sounds like as good as smash bros i am you know before i come into this club i've never actually you know played against the real human before okay always like play it against like you know the computers and like you know you know i like to come to smash bros

because like smash bros is um my first competitive game you all like you know the skill ceiling is really high in the game you know it's really you know fun to play against real people and like different types of people you know there's like good players and there's bad players you know there's so many different you know types of players and also you know about ihsea and you know we went to our tournament in naperville too you know you know there was a lot of you know good players and bad players you know but um we all had a fun time we all learned a lot from it too and um with the future of this club in particular i wanted to be like more than just smash bros i want like different types of

clubs you know all like sponsored by like esports to like you know come to life i want like fortnite rocket league and different types of games to come to school too uh hi my name is edwin rubio i'm a junior at donuts real south and the reason i would go to the smashers club is before when i was a freshman i would always see other people just pull out their switch and just play with their friends and sometimes i would like to join in but there's those people that are that are like anxious you know they can't take no for an answer so they're just shy and don't want to like feel that embarrassment or just telling someone random hey can i join you and they're like no it's fine oh okay so going to

smash club just brings me like i guess happiness saying that all these people are just like me i don't have to be scared and i could just tell someone hey want to play and they'll be yes and we have a good time also at the naperville tournament there were some really nice moments like they projected like projector every every single person's name you could pick your own nickname if you want to and then they will call you up they will call you up by your name that you chose and they will act like an actual tournament it will be all fun and we participated we lost the first round but that doesn't matter we still had fun and it was enjoyable and like to see the future of this club would be nice something i

think would be nice is since it's esports i think it would be nice if maybe we could put in a few new games just in case other people want to play join esports but just aren't into smash bros or like aren't good at it but still want to have a blast hi i'm alex aguilar i'm a freshman from downers grove south basically why i joined the club honestly i decided ever since i heard about there's clubs in this school the first thing that come to my mind if there was a smash bros club in in the school so i decided hey why don't give it a try till basically it was fun for me to see other people who like playing smash bros like me so it was kind of a good time i did

not went to the tournament honestly because i was really busy at the time well i hope for the um feature of the esports thing to like they said have more people to like play other games to join the tournament sort of that way they can show how good they are thank you you guys have any questions for us now what is tell me i can't get the whole the entire name of the game it's called smash [Laughter] so you know smash bros is the game is the name of the game oh yeah the game like we're talking about it's called super smash bros ultimate there's five games in like the title and like smash bros ultimate is the one we're talking about that's the newest one okay and what's what's the premise our candy crush

yeah the premise of the game is like um different games different nintendo games like you know the main characters from different nintendo games come to like one game and they all like fight each other and like you know sometimes nintendo will branch out and like you know they'll have games from the xbox or the playstation for either dlc characters you know like characters you have to find or like you know they'll find because like nintendo will branch out because you know how nintendo was really child friendly yeah you know they will bring out characters like i know you haven't heard of this game before it's called solid snake it's yeah it's like it's not child friendly as you can yo you see you know in the game it's like a whole bunch of like it's

like call of duty essentially you know i'm shooting guns and killing people and you wouldn't think they would like bring it in smash bros but he's in the game um calling in the game yes donkey kong is in the game always always relevant donkey kong is indeed a nintendo game so yes he is in the game now do you um have a certain time that you're on it so that other high school students can play you at a time or do you just play within your group or um how does how does that work exactly because you know with it being the internet it could be you know me you're playing against i doubt it i don't think it is [Laughter] so in the club we all play in person yeah like because not all

of us in the club will have nintendo switches so we all have to play in person but like you know if we like sometimes if we feel like it we can all like um like link up on nintendo switch because they have like a whole like friend base on there too and we can play online there too if we feel like it but i mean do you do you um invite like uh let's say hinsdale south uh do they have a club like that that you could play against them as kind of a a practice maybe for them i'll jump in here as well we went to naperville north that had over 80 high schools all the way from down south um hintonsdale south was there for instance um and they brought different players to

play in this tournament okay so it's all in the building and then they just maybe could sit across the table from you and okay i'm i'm just trying to i would set up in like you know in the neighborhoodville north tournament that we went to they would like sit there what um they would ask all of us in different schools to bring our own switches there and they would have monitors and like tables and chairs to sit up and then we would all be like placed at like certain tables like to fight against each other in the game oh okay so you know that if you're let's say you and i are going to be facing each other we would probably be at the same table so that you can see my expression [Music] it's

a modern take on chess club you know i'm just i'm just trying to visualize you know what what's going on because it it sounds really cool you know how many members in your club oh every meeting we get about 20 to 30 students um all guys or do we get a few excellent all right excellent to hear that um and then uh uh you guys you're aware that this is something that's i mean it's gotten really big the some of the schools that my kids go to colleges that they go to have esports teams um and there's even like scholarship money absolutely for that sort of thing too it's got to be a really big deal yeah so we'll have our own t-shirts and jerseys too i've actually just joined an organization this year where

um some colleges have reached out about scholarships oh wow that's cool my um 10 year old son just became a gamer that's why i'm trying to know here i'm trying to get it to know yeah would we host anything like um i so it looks like next year um the ihsa is going to start to allow different schools to kind of build their own region and host more matches that i think are associated with you know bringing in hinsdale south here for a day um and so it's looking like we're hoping to be able to bring some schools in and get it a little bit more competitive between each high school rather than one term does north during the process of building one and um a couple of months ago our conference met and talked

about all the gaming they had a whole thing i think it was lions township right and lions township is a big gaming room i mean like the lounge chairs and the parkas and everything so i mean sometimes we're like yeah oh it's legitimate yeah i saw that one at trine university a couple weeks ago wow so you're saying forget basketball let's just let's do this it's just one more don't forget basketball there's many another thing yeah i know but you know what i'm saying so i have a question do you guys um it doesn't go as far as to start to if you're interested in like building these games is that something too that is down the line because yeah that that would be good these may be our future game makers or whatever or

working at one of these companies that make these games that probably is cool the other part of the organization that i uh know who spoke about this said that there are other outlets um specifically because it's a multi-billion dollar industry that we're looking at here um where we had students shout cast or kind of like talk through a match as it was being played at the last tournament um there's advertisement there's graphic design and there's a whole bunch of different areas that students who might not be great at the game can still find their behind their area every branch of sports is in esports so the guy's real quiet i actually just learned some of the black ones um rappers in my era a few of them are voices on some of these gangs that's

the best i could relate to we all have a donkey kong [Laughter] so that's a really cool thank you so much all right we know it's only been a week but this is the board meeting we typically have updates is there anything in the last week you feel like jade or scarlet you need to desperately share at this point we have a couple things all right yes all right i can go first you can go go for that sure okay so yes as dr haley just said it has been a week so um respect week has wrapped up um it was such a fun like experience to see our different students with different abilities interact and just learn to embrace those differences and our deca team also went to state i believe over the weekend

and many of our students placed so jenna m was the state champion principles of marketing mary g and sema finished in third in professional selling and hospitality and tourism professional selling prospectively and the team of nala and mara finished in the top ten in innovation plan and robert g finished in the top 10 for human resource management so our deca team had a very successful state tournament i'm not sure if any of them are going to nationals i'll find out in the next couple of days and then our fine arts department is still working hard to perfect everything for the spring musical this year spring sports are in full swing this is the last week of tryouts so we wish all those teams luck as they start their seasons and then finally a little plug

the senior class board is hosting a fundraiser this week and nothing but cakes it's to raise money for our prom so if you could stop by order some bundt cakes that would be greatly appreciated by us thank you is there is there like a slip or something a lot of these fundraisers you have to show them something that this is part of them just mention it but i can also get the flyer and send it okay because any excuse nothing is it in darien do you have an excuse and you can also order it ahead if you're having like parties in the summer and it'll still benefit so like you can so like i know for us it's like ordering graduation cakes ahead of time they'll still benefit that that's awesome okay all right send

us a slip please yeah yeah okay are very important here okay okay so to start off it has been a week but there's always so much changing at north there's always something going on so today is the first day that we celebrate a national school social work week which is very exciting i know it's so exciting yes i'm very thankful for all the ones we have at north our retired one as well we have amazing licensed professionals that are there for us to help us process everything that we go through and i'm very thankful for all of them we each have some on our alpha teams both at north and south so it's a special thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of them uh next like scarlett said we did have

the deca competition for state last weekend and from north we had 21 people uh qualify for state and one of our students is going to nationals in the spring in april which is so exciting we are so proud of all their efforts and everything that they've done next heading into something more academic we have the national language contest coming up in the next couple weeks the german one took place in january but the french one is on the 15th and the spanish one on the 22nd so i think it goes to show the enriching opportunities that north provides the students and the commitment that the students put in by taking these languages and learning beyond the classroom so with that we also have the spring musical mary poppins it's very exciting this weekend i think

it's gonna be fun i think it's gonna be cute a lot of people that i know have been working very hard on it the crew the cast making everything look absolutely so cool i've gone into the auditorium and it's just i'm so excited um sunday we have our pretty and purple fashion show which is for our boss varsity athletes as they us spread philanthropy and help fundraise for our boosters which which is also always something so important for our schools and for athletics we have our winter guard placing second this past weekend in our circuit show for our division which is so exciting we're so proud of their efforts everything that they've done and finally for our special congratulations to our cauldron yearbook staff last a couple weeks ago we found out that our dgn

students earned several awards from the ijea which is the illinois journalism education association they placed for their yearbook a whole new world third place in the overall excellence category which is so exciting and the place in the following categories third in copywriting second in sports coverage honorable mention for best of use of photography third for graphics second for layout and design and second for theme development so we placed very high on all of those which i'm so proud of them i know all the editors last year tried so hard it was such a trying year to try to put a yearbook together right when we were mostly remote learning or we were in some sort of hybrid but they tried so hard as long along with our advisor dr smith she worked very hard as

well and i'm so proud of them and i'm proud to see what us editors can come up with this year for our yearbook as we aim for spring delivery so very good excellent very good great report all right moving along other reports for this night uh for tonight uh returned in person learning really it's just the metric update from the last week uh as everybody knows we are following our guidelines matched up with the cdc guidelines and it all came together last week without any issues everybody's kind of doing their their own thing right now at school our case numbers have dropped down to two in the last week so uh numbers continue to drop down and uh close contacts uh we're not tracking anymore so that'll just be zero from here on on out

so uh but pretty much getting closer to school is normal all right uh hybrid block schedule update so we're at the point now where we have some real good details gina has been putting in just so many hours on pulling all of this together the one of the key pieces of this hybrid block schedule is this access period and what's going to fit into there gina has a whole schedule that the team has been putting together putting that whole schedule out at this point we're not quite ready to you know week by week tell you exactly what's going to fall where but we're going to bring to you some themes here and i'm going to have gina talk through that but just for a reminder that that's what we're talking about is this access period

that's two days a week every week wednesday and thursday uh for about 25 minutes of time all right so we've uh broken it down first into just you you'll see that it's like first semester we have some good specifics second semester uh there's some things we we figure are going gonna happen we'll share with those with you in a second we're waiting for strategic planning to wrap up because some of those ideas are gonna fit into second semester and there's also we're gonna just hold some spaces because i'm sure we'll learn some things first semester that we'll need to do second semester and we don't know what those things are yet because they will present themselves as the school year starts so i'll turn it over to gina and talk about some of these things

so the activities that we've outlined in this presentation both the ones for first semester and beyond were basically thought of or discussed suggested recommended by a group of over 50 people so we had over 50 people working on the access committee and in processing and in meetings came up with a host of activities that we could do during access we will not be able to do all of those the first year absolutely the two concepts the the main concepts behind access and can you go back to the last slide please as you see that it's two days a week conceptually and certainly not starting the year out but as we move on the idea was that one day a week students would be able to get support academic support help from teachers okay and hopefully

from their specific teachers and hopefully from there yes from their teachers and one day a week would be more for programming right for things that we do now some of which we do for example in our monday like pbis mustang way positively north schedule some of which we go into classes and take time to do could be done during this time okay so it's kind of one day a week for that programming one day a week for student help from their teachers in the beginning thank you in the beginning we have a lot to do in the beginning to set that up right we're going to focus a lot of our time on executive functioning for example helping students to understand and look at their grades so that they can determine where they should go

for help so it's going to take several weeks for us to get get started where students are ready to go out and get the help that they need so some of these lessons are going to be front loaded so the beginning the first three weeks month give or take is going to be front loaded with some of the lessons that you're seeing on here so for example the executive functioning lessons and i just listed a few and some of those will be simple things that are done now in classes but not necessarily done in every class so we're talking about some strategies just to give you one that's not up there that many of you can relate to like helping students to write a professional email when they go to college they will need to

write emails and oftentimes we see students write emails that look more like a text might look with abbreviations and those kinds of things some of these things are really simple things but things that we really know that all students need and that access period provides us that time so this is not meant to be an exhaustive list by any stretch but these are just some of the things that we plan to do in first semester so the counseling in both buildings they push into classes now and do a lot of post-secondary planning work on a four-year plan with students what courses should they take they talk about college they talk about tcd they talk about the trades those will go into the access periods uh i mentioned some executive function functioning let's add on to

those so just a reminder part of this schedule change is tied to the dga contract that we entered into right so they pair together there's some features in that contract that we added beyond this this access period for students to get help from staff one of those is office hours which every teacher posts when their office hours are available whether it's in person or virtual for students to just drop in and get help that's when a teacher is either physically or virtually waiting you know for a student to come and get help so some of this is teaching students building in intentional like this is how you advocate for yourself here's the menu of ways that you can go get help teacher office hours access period the resource rooms the resource period before school after

school we also in this contract entered in wrote down that if a student gives a teacher 24 hours notice that teacher needs to find a time in that next 24 hours whether it's in person or virtual to meet with that that student right so when we negotiated the last contract that contains this schedule change that was really built around students being able to get help in real time from their direct teachers when they needed it it's all wrapped together as part of that right it's part of this whole package that the board negotiated with teachers focused on students getting individual help from their teacher when they in real time when they need it well as close to real time as possible the bell schedule is the final piece of all of those resources that we

pulled together but we haven't had this access time to teach the baseline set of skills to all students as to how to use that time how to advocate for that time you know how to reach out and arrange for it you know it's just resources that are out there and students that know how to tap into it do and there's students that don't really know how to advocate for themselves in that time yet having this built-in time that's where it shows up as like executive functioning that's really what that means it's the skills like note-taking and writing emails and those kinds of things but it's also building in the skills for how to be a successful student how to get help when you need it how to advocate for yourself you know how to check

on your grades and to monitor your progress all of those things are skills that right now if you have the right set of teachers and the right experiences and the right parents and the right like the right set of ingredients you get really good at doing those things we want to make sure that every kid is good at doing those things okay i'll get off my soapbox would there be would they have choices in that like if there was a let's say there's a resume writing seminar would they have the choice of attending that or going to see a teacher are they going to have that kind of flexibility to decide so we haven't built out one one aspect of it in terms of what will be optional in terms of the student help time

but we've talked about different opportunities for students so there are other schools that do they might not call it access but they do this where they might uh for example open a gym right so students who want to play basketball i don't know why we're talking best i don't know basketball it's insane we've talked about different options i could also see something like that and we're we're not talking about that tonight i know but i could also see something like that during resource and that is that time where students on an eight-period day so on monday tuesday and friday would have a lunch so period four five or six and for about half the period we're we're planning to put in some programming to assist students the topics on those days might only pertain to

a group of students and it and in some cases might be optional so where you know you have a couple of choices if you want to go for this you can go here if you want to go for that so we're still working through some of that um so if we look at what we were talking about before access is kind of thing the way we're looking at it right now are topics that every student probably by grade level needs to get right because there'll be certain things that we know that ninth graders need but seniors don't but a senior probably needs something like writing a resume or you know that kind of thing so there will be stuff targeted by grade level where the resource period which is when your lunch period rolls through

in the block will be more like what gina was saying likely be more things that are you pick the thing that you go to rather than every student at a grade level is getting the same kind of skill and the counseling lessons are differentiated by grade level and they built so what students do in ninth grade obviously they build on that for tenth and and so on so definitely when like the colleges come would that would you try to target that might time or is that right more in research right because maybe not every student wants to go right right or you'll buy but but that would also be things like trades local businesses those kinds of things could fit into that space and we we do a lot of that now okay even during

i mean during the lunch break so um the difference is it will be more time built in where students aren't having to miss lunch to be able to do it or class but certainly built into the schedule to provide greater flexibility doesn't mean that we wouldn't necessarily do some of those things either on the eight period days there might be some things that are you know specific to a date that we still might want to do but at least this provides greater flexibility the schedule provides flexibility not just in terms of access but in terms of resource so it's 25 minutes long yeah it's about 25 30 minutes long is that going to be enough time all together because you know it from the sound of it you've got some really neat things to present

to ourselves it's a good spot to start and and to be honest with you i don't i wouldn't mind seeing something like that every day of the week so that you can um really present some of the things and and that so i'm it's just how much time are we going to shift away from instruction to do these things yeah but those are instructions and running them right i know we know you know something's called the home room or was it wasn't there wasn't there kind of a 15 minute thing built no currently no no historically no no not anymore my schedule i know has been for at least a couple of decades i'm not sure exactly i like where you're i think though but hank's got something he wanted you were i was there

something more you were saying no i was just saying that to start with this this is the model we're recommending to start with and then as jenny you asked last week you know what happens down the road we evaluate every year how it goes and if it looks like 25 minutes isn't enough time then we'll discuss how is that looking how is that working we do believe that this model puts those skills in every student's hands so there's many of these skills that a teacher might like your english teacher might teach you i don't know what cornell notes is something like a note taking skill or whatever so you might learn that in your english class but then your social studies teacher might show up and reteach that and then later on another teacher might

reteach it where our teachers will know like we've taught this skill to all of our students you can use this skill you don't you can assume yeah the kids will know it so when we talked early on in the year about access will give time back that's how it works now i want to prove it out and make sure it's doing what before we take any more instructional time into these kinds of times well i guess i'm just looking at it as maybe first semester would be the more intense uh training let's say first few weeks of the first semester right because that's that's knowledge that they're going to use their entire four years so you hate to gloss over it for 20 minutes because by the time you get your passing period and all

that kind of thing um you know to me it seems like it would it would be better if we could put some first semester in some second semester and you know that kind of thing that has been clearly a challenge because every group i meet with so we have a list of i don't know 40 50 different lessons and everybody wants every different group has different focus and of course that lesson has to be week one all 40 of them have to be week one so that's obviously not going to work right um so we are in the process of determining what students need from from the start i think you raise an interesting question in terms of number of days i do believe this is two days a week is the right way to

start i do think as we move on and students have a baseline and the way that this complements with resource the way that it complements with student instruction in their classes you know whether it's doctors mentioned english but global connections any class i think i think it's the right way to start but it certainly will be a challenge and that's part of the challenge we're going through right now to determine exactly what needs to come before and remember this is year one right so what will start to happen is it'll ninth grade you'll get a certain set of skills and then 10th grade we build on that and then 11 you know and it goes on where right now it's we have this backlog of things we'd love to see every kid have this skill

set right and now you want to do everything all at once and that that's not how it's going to work long term it'll be here's the things that we know that 9th graders need coming in to be successful and then here's what we add on year 2 and just like we do in our counseling department but it will be that way around all of these other skills that gina is talking about on the board where this will build through your high school career next year will provide the baseline for us i was going to ask so so what does access period physically look like that's my question too what is it is it like mandatory is it it is mandatory where are the students i'm sorry can you go back again no thank you go

ahead bouncing between that's all right um we strategically placed it um not the first period of the day so that students will already be at school right so it's basically placed between first and third on wednesday and second and fourth it's not like lunch where there are multiples well that's the thing everybody wants everyone will have an excellent assignment every student and every staff member so we say assignment you that you'll have a place you're supposed to be right so that's where you might be in room c267 with 24 of your closest friends and a teacher or two okay good probably two attendance will be in most cases it should be two and attendance will be taken it's not graded so students will not receive a grade a letter grade or anything like that but

attendance will be taken students are expected to go to access how do i make it up if i missed it so we're actually and it's interesting that you say that because we've been talking about that not just in terms of access but in terms of resource so we're looking at and this is a lot to take on but we're looking at putting the resources from the access lesson resource and resources but the materials on a website so right now a lot of our counseling resources are on our website we're on our website right so you can go in now can we force students to go in can we probably not but we can certainly send out reminders the access teacher can let them know the next time they see them that oh you know you

missed this just a reminder you need to go in and take a look just like we do for the counseling presentations now okay so it would be a webinar is basically well it might just be resources that they can click into and take a look at so access you can be in other places or you can be in this room and it's not it's not like a home room used to be right not necessarily no it sounds similar in a way there are some aspects that would be similar to a home room in another school but it's um i'd say the programming here is what makes it different different yeah so you because we've taken home rooms out of schools correct right yeah right totally used to serve as like an attendance period because it

used to be that you that's where your attendance for the day was taken and recorded but that's not what we're talking about yeah like one room was show up announcements check in yeah you know get your attendance taken and that was pretty much it right and then you were off for the rest of your day this is actual programming that's inside of there but one of the things you touched on shirelle is there's going to be some of these that are program planned and there will be others in which students can leave that room and go over to their teacher that they need to see in their other room so there'll be this trading of kids at the beginning so like i need to go see mr wugaiser you know in his class because i'm

having trouble in social studies so we've worked it out where i'm going over to his class for that 25 minutes and he's going to have somebody in his class that's going to go to mr lang's class you know because he needs help with spanish right so well i don't know i just gave you a book it's like physics is there anything you can't do i'm just picturing you know some kid he okay say he misses a day and it's something that he really needs you're gonna tell him to go to the website and find out i think about special ed add kids adhd kids do you really think they're gonna go well but that's where their other support system kicks in what is that other support system that's their iep and their alpha team yes

or their teacher yeah yeah it sounds like a lot of accountability yeah it does well i mean we check kids in every class period kids are supposed to be somewhere every class period we do it every every period throughout the day all year long so this the getting kids to where they're supposed to be and checking if they're there is something we're really good at that's a logistical thing that we we have worked out pretty easily so is there any staff development in that time or are no not in access okay no access is just focused on these student things with our teachers all free at that that time and then on those days is that lunch the same amount of time as the regular the monday tuesday friday shorter it's a little bit shorter

on that day because they have the access time and on one of those two days the resource time to come through so lunch is really focused on eating okay on those days because you you that second half of the lunch period that you have on monday tuesday and friday that time for you is worked into those other spaces okay chris what's your perspective on this oh i was going to ask since you've got a number of different lessons that are going to be offered to these students and they're probably going to be in different rooms and if you've got like a resume building thing for a couple of weeks in one room and then you've got other courses how are you gonna make sure that student like i anticipate that you're gonna have a lot

of location changes how are you gonna make sure that these students no not for the programming that you're talking about yeah that programming yeah for resource yes there'll be a spot where if you want to go if that's something you want to go learn about you would go to that location and do that right but access is every student gets it in their assigned room okay by and it's really grade levels that are getting targeted pieces so it's guaranteed right and there could be some exception so for example let's say that a counselor is meeting with her freshman let's say she has 60 freshmen well that's not going to fit in one room we might move students to a larger location or we have some like double rooms you probably remember some of those but

that will be few and far between that's not a weekly type of thing okay on most days you're going to your your actual your access room and then it's either depending on what's going on at that point it's a time for you to go get help or or to work like a study hall or it's uh us determining your content in that space okay and fourth period isn't um i mean in this particular example the person has sixth period lunch right yeah right so right if you had and you could leave at the end of the day if you're junior senior in good standing yeah so that would be good and the choruses that would be five that would be five and six on those yeah so on the block days if you had if

your resource fell fifth period and you're junior senior in good standing and your parents have agreed to it and all you've checked all the boxes you could leave early yes it provides great flexibility what time for example we have students who do internships really helping them pull up that time schedules for those students like in our internship class so that they can have that open so that would provide some flexibility and scheduling for them as well and other programs as well but internships is an example hold on hold on we got another question sure no it's just a lot of first one you said fifth and sixth so that's toward the what's that an hour early they leave or hour and a half i think uh 80 78 minutes so i'm pulling up the exact

time yeah so they would be able to leave at 202 p.m that's pretty good i'm so i'm excited about the counseling piece of this um we have uh we actually have i know we our student-to-counsel ratio here in our district is better than most but it's still i've expressed before not enough um and and i've i've had conversations with you before hank and probably a few others just everything i went through with my kids trying to identify a college for them to go to you know and um and now i'm helping my niece with with that and there's just so much more most you you mentioned if a student doesn't have the parent and doesn't have the school really needs to be that um for them and there's so much more we could do with

guiding our students to their post high school life whether it be the military whether it be trades whether it be great in the workforce college um i think that there's so much more we we can and should be doing with that and this is going to allow us to do more right there's going to be a lot of pathway yeah work inside of here of helping each student understand there are all of these pathways or combinations of those pathways like you could work and go to school right and helping them pick the right pathway understand how to enter into that and how to be successful one of the other things we hope to teach over four years is that many people move between pathways right you might start in college and then need to go

to work and then go to the military and then come back to work and then go to college right and that's fine life you know you might start in community college go to a four-year college go to work you know it it could be could be a four-year college and then something else right who knows so it's helping students understand that there are all of these pathways that the career choice that you're having has a variety of pathways of getting there some of them will come at a greater cost than others but either way it's helping each student figure out what is that pathway for them so that they're ready to enter into that post-secondary well i'm really excited about that because and i know that this is something that you have wanted as well

so um and i know our counseling staff does as well they you know there's only so many hours in the day um and this will lead to that now what about our students that are in the tcd program how how is that going to work with with this so we send students to tcd either in the morning so what we call am am tcd or pmtcd unfortunately no matter where we place access it's either going to be in the morning or it's going to be in the afternoon we tend to have a smaller group of students in the amtc's so that was part of our rationale and placing it in the morning and we will have those resources available too to all really to all students but certainly they can they can reference that it's

interesting that you asked that because this year at least in scheduling and in registration it looks like we have more students that we will be sending to tcd next year than we have at least in the nine years that i've been in this position that's great news um you know we'll follow through with the paperwork and all those kinds of things more have registered than have registered in i don't i don't know how long i have a question it's a little off topic but kind of mike mentioned like the kids where they're going to go and knowing and then hey um dr thiele you mentioned this way you may go that way i i had suggested a while back but i know we weren't there to do it but one of the things with the

kids that are getting ready for college the one of the biggest complaints i heard was not being able to do the fafsa and have we had i mean that was something i was willing to volunteer for to come would have the parents sit down and and well i helped kids and ended up helping him do it even though it wasn't horrible and right now we do hold sessions where students can come in for help and they even see some information system or in the in the evening part part of the the challenge with the fafsa is that you need your parent information and that's often one of the challenges we face so we get the students to where we can oh sorry but i could definitely see that being more of a resource activity so

if you need help with your fafsa this week coming into the college career center or wherever yeah i'm talking about more like a community night where you have we do that now volunteers that will help because the parent could come there because the parent is yeah their work during the day the counselors run that now okay all right because what i found when my daughter was going through there were there are some great counselors but what do you have you don't have i mean you can't hire 40 right so it's just the bandwidth against that's right how many students and there's nothing they're working their butts off i'm not right i'm not you know i'm just saying that you don't it's not enough well but this should help the efficacy of our current counseling staff

because we build in this time where every student is getting these baseline skills and some of these cross over with the things that counselors are providing support for and then you have that built-in resource time where students and we have programming going on so the idea is that a single counselor doesn't have to do everything with each individual kid right is that you get some some scale here that you build into the process so that now when a teacher when a counselor is meeting with a student they might have already identified a career path right and maybe already have identified i'm looking for a small liberal arts school and okay now i can jump past a whole bunch of things and jump right into what you need right now rather than i need to meet

with you and work up to the point of this is where we're at right so it makes the time that our counselors have with students you know we i said at the beginning about being students being better at advocating for themselves that means teaching students to be better at saying what they need what they want and yeah and that they know more so when they that time that is spent one-on-one with a counselor is way more effective than what it is right now yeah because i just find one of the detriments to success is access to information everybody does not have access to information so yeah but i mean i know everybody's doing a great job it's just how do we go in this is how we do it people that could lend their time

to have talent and time to you know it's up can you skip to the next do you mind if i was just going to grab myself but don't touch them so one of the things i want to mention that goes along with that is we became an avid district almost a decade ago well this was good and as you know that we have one avid class at each grade level freshman or junior senior yes one of the goals of avid avid as the organization but also our goals here in district 99 is to implement avid strategies as much as possible in what is called school-wide so across the curriculum right and a lot of that occurs already dr thiele mentioned uh cornell notes for example and that's an avid strategy when i say it's an

avid strategy avid are best practices their strategies they're taking from all different places but they kind of package them and train teachers and train avid schools on how to implement these strategies one of the really exciting parts to me of access is we'll be able to do more of that school-wide and part of what avid is really good at is getting students prepared and thinking about college and thinking about what comes next and in some cases it may not be college although avid is more focused on college than not but it does help students to think about post-secondary in general as well and so we certainly are planning to build in avid strategies and i put like beyond first semester but in years to come as well we already do some of that but it's

we might do it in global connections but we don't do it in any other classes or we might do it in our strategies for academic success classes or we might do it in this class here we want it to be school-wide so all students learn how to use those strategies and so that they'll have those strategies with them for whatever is next so i think that relates to to that part did you have a question yeah how many years did you say that avid was had been a program probably five years no boys i think it was one year when i was still in the building so i believe it's about a deck give or take a decade but it's one class of students there was one year at south that we did have two

classes at a grade level yeah but that was okay not typical yeah i i know i had some friends who took happened do you guys ever um like get feedback from graduates who went through avid and then went to college and were like hey these couple of tips helped and things like that absolutely in fact uh some of the alumni have met in the summer yeah um and some come back we've had avid graduates come back and tutor for us so you know part of avid is tutorials not to give you too much detail but their tutorials and in a perfect world they would be led by college age tutors that's really challenging for us because they have schedules that don't always mesh with ours right but some of them have come back and tutors

were tutored which has been great awesome i'm going to go back and slide to make sure we get i just wanted everything yeah all right so other things that we're already planning on falling in first semester of next year include social emotional learning skills our pbis lessons so instead of an alternative schedule on mondays that would fall on an access period we have our required training that has to happen in the first 90 days of school shootings that's alice safety training we have a variety of surveys that we need to give and then obviously we talked about the student help and support so that fills up kind of your first semester uh of skills you know it when you sit down to start building out a schedule it seems like how are we going to

fill all this time and then it's full yeah so uh then we have this as gina said this long list of other skills for second semester and beyond um that we've talked about some of these tonight uh i guess i'll turn it over to you you've been in the room but that's one other question so yeah i appreciate all the work that has been done on this but i know i asked early on what metrics will we have in place to make sure that this is working or not working because i think we talked about doing it and i don't know where we are at on that to be honest at this point but almost like a trial period for this but if it's full-fledged what metrics are we going to build and make sure

this is or have we considered that yeah that's why we're bringing in a third-party program evaluator that's why meg ormisin is coming in and white and company our architects are paying for that study that is the stuff that's going to give us yeah that's all report back yeah they will meg will be reporting back to the board on the progress uh periodically for the next two and a half years uh as to how the progress is going the feedback that she's hearing the data and metrics that indicate that we're making progress and if we're not then it'll be our job to come to you and say all right this came back that this wasn't successful so here's how we're going to fix that so the board will get real-time reporting uh on how effective these

changes are and um and of course we would be doing that as an administration anyway but it's always nice to get a you know an independent third party to come in and talk to people and give you feedback that isn't you know our view on it but you know somebody who isn't connected to us to come in okay so connect on that i actually forgot to the ninth and tenth graders during that time would they be in the commons like the resource on the long oh on their lunch period on the long lo yeah yeah yeah for half of that will be resource will be programming where they can either will go to do things or can go to do things depending that's the next thing that gina is working on after access right um

and then the other half of that is like a study hall and then that's where commons library all of those resources the counselors you know everything that hangs off the commons is available yeah yeah so it's like gives them a you know lunch you have to eat and then you have that short back half of it 20 minutes or whatever to get help this gives you a little longer period of time one day a week to take advantage of all of those things well they so the the well they have the entire lunch period to like they could choose to eat later in their lunch period now yeah yeah that's what's going on this year right and that's why meg's going to come in the researcher is going to come in in the next couple

of months to just do some feedback from students on how that went this year and then next year it's kind of like you're still going to have that monday tuesday and friday then on wednesday and thursday you'll have a little lunch period inside of a class right where you go and get lunch but instead of two longer lunch periods on those two days instead you get this resource on one of the two days it's a little longer chunk of time right so the idea is that you're giving students a variety of different shapes and sizes and teachers a variety of shapes and sizes to build in what they need in those spaces like right now if you need to go make up a test that's hard to do on your lunch hour to go eat

and go make up a test but on a resource period like i could go make up a test on that day and i don't have to stick around after school or miss a practice or you know miss getting home on you know at my normal time on a bus i can go make up a test during a resource period i got plenty of time right so it's giving different windows of time and then it's up to us in that access time especially at the beginning of the year to set expectations and teach students how to use that time appropriately right that that doesn't just become 40 minutes that i i blow off and then oh my goodness i could have made up this right and it's it's building some expectations and then help our teachers

doing that as well like hey mike you have a test that you missed this week you should make that up by next friday and your resource time would be a great time to do that right you have that nightmare again now so are you asking if they could have eaten during that later i'm saying there's still time to eat there's still time to eat there's still the time yeah so if we go back so if we look at this sample like they're not going to eat in that six right so this student if it's thursday right they're gonna show up in the morning go to english and then go to their access period then they're going to go to their social studies class and then this specific student has b lunch so they're going to

go to the first two two-thirds of their elective class so let's say that's art they'll go to like two-thirds of their art class their whole art class will break go take a 38-minute lunch and then they all come back and finish the last third of that class where another student might start in lunch and then go do their whole art class another in a you know an ad or a arts of you know it doesn't have to be art right it could be a different class of spanish right and then another student might start in their french class and then in the last chunk of that go to lunch right but so this student is in the b lunch period right so they start their class go through two-thirds of it go eat lunch and

then the whole class comes back together and finishes then this particular student has resource part of that will be either required or offered options which is what gina is going to work through with this team next and we'll come back to you with here are the things that we're offering and this is where she said like maybe it's the top four universities that our students go to maybe it's college of dupage maybe it's the four biggest employers in the district 99 area come and talk about getting a job with them or the different maybe the different jobs that are offered there so that they can see they have everything from a custodian to an attorney that works in the building up the street right and or maybe it's we are pushing and pro all all

juniors need to come during this time and do their bubbling for s.a.t exactly right it could be any number of those things that happens and then the other half of that is study hall for some kids for some groups of students every so often that whole block of time could just become you know your time for a study hall and depends on how everything gets programmed and placed out for the the course of the year but or you could have a student that's a junior senior in good standing that then is allowed to to leave at that point so maybe a junior that has to do sat bubbling needs to stick around until they're done bubbling and then they could go ahead and go home right or they stick around for the whole period but

that's kind of how that day kind of flows through i know it when you look at that it's like wow that's confusing but it really doesn't become that way because we have less messed up weeks i'll call them messed up right unusual weeks over the course of the year so monday starts becoming every monday is like this and every tuesday is like this and every wednesday is like this and every thursday and then every friday right so you start to build even though there's differences in the course of the week the week doesn't get monotonous but the weeks get predictable you know over the course of time so by building in time for these things to happen we actually get more consistency over time as to how a student's schedule works i have another overarching

question it kind of goes along with what shirelle was asking in terms of how we're measuring our success with this ultimately i i think that we're we're looking for more success with standardized test scores we're looking for better grades we're looking for i mean what are we you know what are we going to use as the as the yardstick i guess so the initial let me pull up the i'm going to pull up my slide so i can read from it of what meg proposed after we met with her several times to walk through all of this information with her what she brought to the table is recommendations for the initial data pieces and there could be more than this as time goes on right but this is her first take on it survey says

um [Music] potential measurables were number of times students connect with teachers to receive help improvement in student achievement number of poor grades impact on cultural issues related or reflected in the culture and climate surveys impact of the wednesday thursday schedule creating access connection with trusted adults especially in year two because we envision that you will keep the same access period teacher year after year after year right so that you start to build a different kind of check-in with an adult over time and that gives a different perspective you know is it remember i taught science right so there was a lot of students that i had one year or one semester only but i also taught band yeah so i had students that i saw for four years you get a very different perspective of

a student in both settings right sometimes students will step out a little bit more if they know they're only going to be with you a semester right and it's a little different relationship there's a much different relationship of a student that you have year after year after year and you see them grow and this is kind of creates right now there's very few academic interactions banned maybe some of our art students um where you're going to see you know choir where you're going to see the same teachers for four years of your career this provides that opportunity for every student we have an adult that's checking in over time with the kids so you see them when they come in in ninth grade you see them start to develop into what their future you're talking

about college and career pathways with them is they then move into their junior year and they're thinking about what might happen after high school and then as they're entering into those finalizing those plans in senior year that same adult has kind of followed you through that journey over your four years now that same adult is for what class all the questions access this access okay because i'm like if it's not a good fit i wouldn't want to say no it's just access okay so you were that would be non-graded sound great okay so that's a different relationship as well right yeah yes yeah so that that that works for me okay so awesome we were talking about the yardstick though so oh so back to that thanks thanks for getting me back on track mike

uh other things on the list are so impact of the wednesday thursday schedule creating access connections with trusted adults in year two so making sure that we are seeing some of that occur college and career readiness standards so there's a whole list of standards that right and indicators that we're tracking uh things like are students involved in two or more activities or athletics that's right right and those kinds of things uh impact on any attendance data uh and then others that that she comes up with what's interesting is standardized test scores aren't necessarily on here because really what you get on standardized test scores is data that's far less robust and challenging than the types of skills we are trying to build through these like standardized tests aren't built to measure the types of skills

that we're developing in this new schedule i agree but you know the outside world always looks at that right they look at what are the greats you know what are the scores like yeah what are the scores like i believe that if you do all of these things mike you will see those in that but it would not be serving our kids well to be the point of focus in this work but if we measured it but not necessarily oh we always measure it yeah we always said academic achievement right yeah yeah i mean but that for the higher the greater indicator of post-secondary success and academic achievement is gpa you know yeah i mean that's why this the schools are finally moving you know the colleges are finally moving away they were doing that

before the penalty sort of like in our next four years you're going to see how we're already yes making huge strides in that in the work that we're doing this year that will really get amped up next year so stay tuned we're next where it is making a difference is is helping my niece and looking at things now um discovering that that standardized test score can still help quite a bit though in terms determining whether or not you may get a little higher scholarship yes than you might have got otherwise so it's still in play oh it's absolutely in play we have two seniors here so yeah what did that yeah so those are those are the metrics and then so with the the culture survey that would encompass student satisfaction parent satisfaction staff satisfaction

yes okay yep all right other questions i i i hate to keep bringing up bring it up this is the time most of what i've read you know the pros and the cons it definitely seems like going to block schedule or a hybrid far more pros than clients but then there's always that one little group you know that i that i can never forget about i look at the kids with behavior issues they're in a 90-minute class what's that teacher going to do you know 90 minutes they're it's difficult enough to contain them within a 40 or 50 minute class what happens so first of all it's 78 not 90. okay 78. so but we did hear that from students last year in the hybrid five minutes makes a difference no no but it does

it does it does you know that for being in a classroom 12 minutes and we also heard that from students last year even though this isn't the same as last like this is not last year right but we did hear from students like don't go more than 80 minutes like we don't want to be with the teacher the same teacher for more than 80 minutes so we're at 78 we're less than 80 minutes right so that was a bit of feedback that we did hear from students like don't go any longer than that um and then uh within the the students so students that are truly ed will probably be in their own kind of programming okay so they may not necessarily they may not necessarily or for the whole day be included for that

that whole schedule right same with our multiple needs students our mn students those kids will follow kind of their own schedule yeah i know there's so much yeah you know with ed kids putting them into the regular curriculum but then many of our classrooms where you're going to find more students you're going to find more support in those classrooms as well yeah with paraprofessionals and those kinds of things no child left behind thanks mike you're welcome yeah yeah why did you say that yeah why'd you say that but i'll have words later too soon all it's been about a right right so where do we leave off here so i'll give you a few more chuckles a couple of things on here that we perhaps didn't mention is we do digital citizenship lessons now we

plan to put those into the access period so less pushing into classrooms and taking time from instruction in that sense some of the tech tools some study skills there's some new legislation in terms of needs in terms of like media literacy this will provide that opportunity in that time for those lessons as well i mentioned avid and then certainly and some of this will evolve by grade level beyond the first year and that's why i kind of put beyond there but certainly we've talked about test prep being grade level specific and what does that look like and it might look like online programs it could look like a lot of different things all right so overall there's a lot of benefits we've covered most of these tonight i won't read this all to you a

couple of things we haven't touched on tonight that we need to pull out of here one of the things we're also working on is with the later start making sure that we shorten all of our bus routes as much as possible so we are planning on adding five additional routes in the morning that we're trying to make it not only is the day start a little bit later but the time that students have to leave their house to get to school is also a little bit later so we're trying to make it you know so even if you even if a student doesn't have to walk out for 10 or 15 or 20 minutes later to hop on a bus it's 10 or 15 or 20 more minutes that they get to sleep in the

morning right so it's looking at both of those factors in the morning to allow students to arrive later as i mentioned one of our college and career indicator standards is students a lot active in clubs and activities and sports right uh so we're talking with uh our activities directors and we will be trying to promote that a lot of our clubs meet in the morning because now there is like you used to arrive at eight now you could still arrive at eight and go to a club for 15 or 20 minutes before you go to class right so a way for students to get more involved in those things without extending the school day or cutting into athletics right that tend to happen after the school day um and then we talked about avid college

and career readiness and then the last one i think is the most essential part of all of this is you're going to see me start to use this word a lot i've been talking about a lot with jill in strategic planning that we move from a school district that creates opportunities that students can take advantage of to ensuring that every kid is taking advantage of those opportunities right there's a difference right now historically we're a very good school district we build a lot of opportunities and if kids choose to tap into those things they get them but there are a certain set of skills that we call tier one skills that every kid should have that we administratively uh want to be as intentional as possible of ensuring that every student has those skills not

just they could have if they got the right set of teachers and coaches that they would get it we want to make sure that every single student has this basic skill set and this schedule allows us to do that and then this schedule also is final exams are going to be at the discretion of the departments or teachers or right but they'll have these different times in which they could fit so we're still working on revisiting that for this year and then based on that we'll have recommendations for next year as to how that that falls so we're looking right now and evaluating what'll happen in the last week of this school year based on what happened first semester so that we can improve that experience for our kids and we're we'll know that in

the next few weeks i would think and then we'll use that to model out what we do for final exams next year i just wonder okay it just sounds like with this hybrid block that um this all becomes potentially in theory less stressful on students and teachers and all that but what about the implementation of it how stressful is that because we're coming off a covet and we're thinking of starting it this year is that going to be kind of stressful for you well i think i mean i i i think that this is i've been asked this a lot of times like is next year the right year this year would have been the right year if we had right because all of these supports that we're building in would have been perfect coming

off of kovid right to have all of these supports if this is what's better for kids then now is the right time you know next year will be a change for students no matter what yeah it's going to be different than the last three years hopefully we won't end it two-thirds of the way through and leave for a pandemic hopefully we won't have a year of hybrid and mixed up stuff hopefully we won't have a year of covid restrictions right hopefully no matter what for our students next year our seniors next year we'll be different no matter what we do next year even if we went back to the eighth period day it's going to be different it's going to be a change next year it will be a different school year than what they've

experienced in their prior three years and thank god for that um so i this is the right thing to do for kids then it's the right thing to do for kids now all right so uh that was the biggest set of solve fors between the last two board meetings that we've brought you right gina is still working on resource and probably will be for the rest of the year to get all of that work done in place november we we did seek board of education approval to work on this technically the board doesn't have to vote on it again a bell schedule is you know within the administrative purview to put that into place how the boards voted on it twice with the contract and with um and authorizing the work for it however nancy

and i talked about it we would like to bring it back at the next board meeting to just take formal action on it even though it's not required by the board we just think that it would be a good indication to everybody that we're moving forward with this for next year so at this point between now and march 21st if any board member feels like we have not answered your questions so that you can make an informed vote at that time this is your time to ask those questions over the next two weeks to get them to me we'll make sure we have them for you in advance of the march board meeting remember as a superintendent my job isn't to convince you to vote yes my job is to convince you that you know

all the information you need to make an informed vote of course we've done a lot of work on this and we think it's the best thing for kids we hope that you will vote yes son but we never want you to reach a point where you feel like you don't know enough to make a decision so if there's something and you feel like i got to get this answered before i take a vote yes or no the next two weeks is your two weeks to to let gina and i know like at the next board meeting please bring this to to us um so that you can be informed uh enough to to take action and then we do hope that you uh that we vote and we move forward and we're ready to go

at that point so any concerns or questions that i can answer right now this is kind of a one-off but when you look at like those standardized testing days that we have coming up how do you envision i thinking of placing those on a regular eight period day or you know because it just depends on what the state gives us okay yeah that's determined they pretty much become their own days okay they don't become like this year it'll be it's an announcement on this one or did it go i think everybody was simple we sense it yeah okay well there'll be more announcements yeah rooms and all that information of course but it pretty much they become their own testing days unlike sat that's a set date by the state we don't have any choice

okay and they don't always pick the same day no because that would make sense they want to surprise you so that like you're saying what the ninth and tenth graders it's the testing day being on a different day there's actually a testing window okay same with isa so illinois science assessment excuse me so those tests have a testing window we've often obviously paired psat 8 9 and psat 10 with sat this year coming up the doing a little bit differently in terms of scheduling we have and then illinois science assessment we typically do during the school day as we will this year in like two shifts of students dividing the junior class in half all right another question all right thank you excellent work all right uh this one's short this is the first meeting

of staffing recommendations this is the shorter one of the two meetings the longer one comes at our next meeting that's why we part of the reason we want to make sure we got all of the schedule questions out of the way tonight you know because we'll have a larger staffing presentation at the next board meeting this is the first meeting where we bring you recommendations for new positions that were added i have gina talk about the first two which are kind of tweeners they're not really new but they are so as you may recall from our last meeting i talked about the arp sr3 use the funds plan and you may recall that i had the student success coordinators in those plans they're in the plan so this year salaries are being paid out of

sr3 or s or arp as it's called however moving forward we do not anticipate having enough funding within the grant to be able to fund these positions and we have been very pleased with these positions we have seen that having the student success coordinator as a as an academic liaison between counseling student support services and academic classes and teachers as a great benefit to our students they are working with not just students that are obviously in person in school but students are hospitalized students that may be on homebound and we're hoping that the board will continue to fund these positions but moving to funding out of local district funds this is a position we actually talked about met we've been talking about for years this position as well for as long as i've been here

yeah definitely um but when we saw the opportunity to be able to do that we put it in place and as we had hoped it's been very successful so we're hoping that the board will continue with these positions i have a question when it says potential cost estimate is that all in cost is why are we calling it that way yeah because it depends on the teacher that you hire for it so salary and benefits it's going to be a teacher this is a teaching position so currently the two individuals that are serving in this capacity are certified teachers okay sorry i missed that some kind of way but yeah all of these positions are teaching positions yeah they're not called teacher anymore they'd be a student success court this this position would be a

student's success a certified teacher it's a certified teacher okay you and i are around the same we're finishing each other's system in terms of absorbing the cost you had mentioned something in the uh about how you really didn't see this as in terms of overall so these positions jeri and mark anticipated that they would work out that they would be the thing that our kids needed and when they built the budget for this year anticipated those costs in the projected budget for this next year so the budget for next year already contained these two positions so um but just transparent in what we're doing that is for those following at home yeah since yeah there's hardly anybody here principles joe um how are we going to pay for this that's how it pays it's already

it's already in the projected budget yeah we're wondering what kind of things will the student coordinator do i mean is it taking care of like kids who are hospitalized for emotional reasons is it taking care of the social emotional getting back into school it's all of that yeah all of that but somebody's functioning in this today correct we already have people serving in this role today you'll have a job description for what may need to change about it or whatever based on well the only thing that really changes is that it's students out for other things most likely more than kovid right where this year it's been a lot of covet absences but historically our hospitalization numbers for all kinds of reasons have continued to climb over the last decade we don't see that going

in another direction so um and we're never at a lack of students that need extra help so okay and before we were using these s or funds and arp and now we gotta absorb it you know local funds yeah and when you say local funds we're talking about just our our budget okay yeah and as i said uh mark and jury built that into our budget for next year they anticipated that these positions would be successful and that uh the district would need to pick up the tabs for them moving forward and that anticipation was based on you know past experience knowing that this was something that we really wanted to have and then we have a situation like this pandemic and and the government at large she goes hey this is something we really

need because we have so many students in need and in dealing with remote and what have you and and just because the pandemic ends doesn't mean that the need is going away we we still have students that have to miss school for any number of reasons and have other issues that this this coordinator is going to help with and another preview of our next board meeting we will talk about our as i mentioned earlier our strategic response to students that are failing this position helps cover that gap and make sure that students that are not on track to graduating are in their purview of helping them get back on track so and then i'll let scott talk about t99 social work yeah so we're uh we're asking the board about an increase of of a

social worker so just to give you a little perspective we've increased in in the last four years about 20 some students but we haven't increased social work support in that time we've always had kind of a part-time allocation for the for the social work so with the increase in numbers we're looking to move that up to a 1.0 uh so it'd be a full-time social worker at the transition program at the program absolutely as opposed to yeah right now we have someone splitting some time that's working with our our social emotional side of it but with the increase in students we just feel and typically our our ratio when we look at special ed social work support we're our ratio is usually one in 50 students and we're going to have 70 students at transition

next year so but we do feel the 1.0 is justifies the support we need so that will be in in the group of recommendations that we bring you at the next board meeting overall our enrollment is down and our fte will trend down slightly as well we're putting the final touches on that in advance of march of our of our next board meeting in march but overall we forecast that our enrollment will be down so our number of teachers will be down but we also as we always try to do make that coincide with attrition so that it's either people that are retiring that absorb those positions or part-time teachers that are released every year make up that fte and we don't cut into our established kind of staffing that are here so we always

try to absorb those things through that direction first however you will still see uh at on the agenda for the next board meeting a hearing for reduction in force because any time we're reducing any number of staff through a combination of re reasons that sits on there but when you see that don't get concerned that we're releasing a bunch of of teachers as a result of that so that all will come together at the next meeting the enrollment uh piece uh just how so curiosity how does um how does the effects of the last couple years line up with the casarda model that we've been following forever yeah it's not following right now the casarta model but that is true for all of dupage county enrollment is down everywhere uh in public schools we we

have intentionally built some space in some of our we're down about three but that we could have been down even some more you'll see but we had to build in some space because we anticipate students coming back we had students that went to private schools because of covid because of different restrictions we had students that went out of state because of covid restrictions and not wanting to be in the illinois set of covenant mitigations we are leaving space because we anticipate that some of those students will be coming back this summer so we've tried even though we have declining enrollment leave some key spaces open because we anticipate a move back in uh to the dupage county area and especially especially our attendance area over the summer so a little preview for you do okay

have a deadline or can they just tell you they live in the attendance area they can show up anytime we take them all the last day of school they can show yep we're a public school uh we have no forms right so no reception of visitors all we need to do is adjourn that's remarkable oh what was the last time that happened so moved terry doesn't care a second sorel oh shirelle baby favor hi hi all this opposed we are a journey i'm sorry i like this meeting yeah thank you everybody have a good evening you
