Good evening and welcome to North High School as we celebrate the graduation of the students of the class of 2018. At this time, please stand for the processional as the band conducted by Mr. Ron Pansich plays pomp and circumstance. And please remain standing for the pledge of allegiance and the national anthem. [Music] Hallelujah. [Music] Hallelujah. [Music] Illech. [Music] Hallelujah. [Music] I [Music] am. Happy birthday. [Music] Dr. The members of the board of education, faculty, and staff, parents, families, and friends. Welcome to the graduation commencement ceremony for the Downer's Grove North High School class of 2018. My name is Janice Schwarz and I have the honor and privilege of being the principal of North High. Tonight's ceremony is a part of a rich history as we gather this evening to celebrate the graduation of the 90th
class from North High School and the 140th in the history of Downer's Grove High Schools. To begin our ceremony, Bridget Degan will lead us in the pledge of allegiance. While at North, Bridget was a member of the Orchestus dance team, positively northstars and choir. She also was involved in our theater program and served as a PE leader. Bridget will study at the University of Kansas next year. The pledge of allegiance will be followed by the Star Spangle Banner performed by our North High combined bands under the direction of senior Jennifer Casey. Jennifer has been involved in many activities while at North including art club, book club, German club, German national honor society, national honor society, triumph music honor society, DGN band board, and baritone section captain of the Trojan marching band. Jennifer will double major
in euphonium performance and music education at Butler University next year. Gentlemen, please remove your graduation caps. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. [Music] Please be seated. Graduates, please replace your caps. My name is Sarah Jorgi. At this time, it is my honor to introduce the platform guests. As I introduce each guest, I would ask each of them to stand and for you to hold your applause until all guests have been introduced. Dr. Dr. Hank They, Superintendent, Board of Education members, Mr. Michael Davenport, Miss Charerelle Fuller, President Dr. Nancy Kupka, Mr. Daniel Nicholas, Vice President, Miss Teresa Pavisich, Mr. Rick Pavanado, Mr. Donald Rener, and faculty members, Mr. Demetrius Papa George,
English and drama teacher, and Mr. Breer Teague, fine arts department chair. Thank you for your participation in our ceremony. [Applause] The North High A Capella Choir will now perform two selections. The first is entitled Thankful. The lyrics in this piece speak to the importance of showing gratitude as we move through our lives, even despite the many struggles in our individual lives and in our larger communities. The piece reminds us that though the world is far from perfect, there is so much to be thankful for. This is a good reminder for our graduates today as they move forward to new experiences that will continue to shape them in meaningful and positive ways. Dr. Frank Pecars will conduct this piece. After that, the choir will sing our school's alma mater. It will be conducted today by senior
Lindseay Labida, whose performing arts involvement at North High School include a four-year participation in our band program, where she was also captain of the color guard and winterguard team, numerous stage appearances in plays and musicals in our theater program, and a four-year participation in the DGN choirs, where she twice earned membership in the ILMEA All State Chorus. Recently, Lindsay was named as the outstanding senior in music by members of the music faculty. At the end of the first selection, we will ask you to stand for the alma mater and for the men to remove their graduation caps. Both selections will be accompanied by Miss Rachel Sidel [Music] us. Some days we can see the joy that uses [Music] we take what we should give tonight what we can be. And on this day, we hope
for what we still [Music] do. [Music] There's so much to be Thankful for beyond ourselves. It's way too late to say I'll cry tomorrow. [Music] We pray for what we know can be and we hope for what we still [Music] can do more. and still do more. There's so much to be thankful for. Even with our differences, there is a place we're all connected. Each of us can find each other's [Music] [Applause] [Music] So for tonight we Pray for what we know. And on this day we hope for what we still [Music] need [Music] to be thankful. So much to be thankful. There's so much to be thankful. So much to be thankful. [Music] [Applause] Please stand for the alma mater. Gentlemen, please remove your caps. [Music] town to thee. We raise [Music] our songs
of praise. With love sincere, we pledge to thee our last royal. Thy wisdom learning faith and truth shall ever guide us in our youth. The coming years will ever prove the greatness of thy watchful love [Music] in heart, soul, and and bless thee in thy [Music] shall forever be Queen. [Music] [Applause] Please be seated. Gentlemen, please replace your caps. It is my pleasure to introduce our student speaker, Grant Tyson. Grant has been very involved in service, activities, and athletics in his four years at North. He has volunteered his time as a tutor in both the math and science departments and has been in investment club serving as president this year. Grant is also a member of National Honor Society and was a leader for both elite and snowball. He plays lacrosse and will continue to
play next year at Dupal University where he will study economics and math. [Applause] Good evening students, teachers, family, and friends. Tonight, we are gathered here to celebrate the graduation of Downers Grove North class of 2018. Although there are 568 of us graduating tonight, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the three students that will not be walking across the stage with us. Mark Bliss, Richie Zamura, and Alex Brutin may not be here today, but they were as much a part of the class of 2018's journey as the rest of us. It's going to be a few months until any of us have to turn in any projects or meet any deadlines. So, I want you all to think back to the last assignment that you turned in past the due date and think
about how your teacher react to it reacted to it. He or she probably told you that it wasn't a big deal and that you could just hand it in the next day without consequence or simply with a minor point deduction. Many of us graduating today are or were athletes for Downers Grove North. Some of us extremely gifted, some of us not so much. Think back to the last time you competed for your team at Downer's North. Just because your coach may have put you in does not mean you deserved it. The two things are independent of one another. High school is a time of growth and change. The adults in our lives know this, so at times they can be more accommodating to our needs. At Downer's Grove North, we have been handed so many
things from the people who care about our success. Unfortunately, this is not the way that it works in the real world. Nobody owes us anything. Bosses, professors, and superior officers will not be so likely to accept, "I just need one more day." And they will not care that you are late because of traffic or whatever excuse we decide to use that day. They will only care that the job did not get done on time or that you were not there when you were supposed to be. Although the working world is different from high school, one way or another, each one of us has been prepared for the coming challenges. Sitting in class, filling out busy work, working on lab reports that nobody understands. This type of stuff is what we call the grind. Pushing through
things that you don't want to do. Working in your off season to be able to run faster, jump higher, and throw more consistently is annoying and repetitive. Having to go to the hospital or to therapy multiple times a week is hard, but to get better, you have to put in the time. Grit is defined as courage and resolve, having strength of character. Each one of us has had to have shown grit in order to get here tonight and receive our diplomas. We've all had moments of turning in late work, being tardy, or wanting to stay at home. I get it. School can be a huge pain sometimes, especially when you're dealing with other life challenges. In the real world, we have to work for what we deserve. Just as we have been working for the
past four years, but now greater things are on the line than a grading class or playing time in a game. Everything we do for the rest of our lives is our choice. We have the freedom to pursue our passions and our interests. We can all do something meaningful to ourselves and to others. Go out in the world and earn what you deserve. If there is something you want, dedicate yourself to make your dream a reality. Class of 2018, whatever it is you choose to do with your lives, go all out and you will succeed. Thank you. Thank you, Grant. The class of 2018 is grateful for the guidance and support all of our faculty members have given us during the past four years, for their dedication to providing us with the best possible education, and
for preparing us for the road ahead. We would like to extend a special thank you to Carol Cornelius, who is retiring after 18 years at North High. I ask the faculty who are here with us tonight to stand for recognition, including those who are seated with our graduates. Please join the students in giving our faculty members a round of applause. [Applause] Thank you faculty. Thank you, Sarah. In Sarah's four years at North, she has always exemplified our positively North motto of being respectful, responsible, and engaged. Not only is she kind and passionate, she has dedicated many hours to serving others. Most notably, Sarah has actively served her peers while at North by being a member of Circle of Friends and Student Council for all four years. This past year, Sarah was the student council president.
She also has been involved with class board and is a member of National Honor Society and National French Honor Society. Next year, Sarah will continue her studies in the direct admit occupational therapy program at St. Louis University. Please join me in giving a round of applause for Sarah. [Applause] At this time, I am honored to present the class of 2018. During the last four years, I have watched these students pursue and attain excellence in a number of ways. Many of them earned state and national recognition in music, art, journalism, DECA, speech, world languages, and FCCLA. There are simply too many medals and trophies to recount here. The class of 2018 showcased their athletic skills as well. During their time at North, these seniors earned multiple conference, regional, and sectional championships, including a girls soccer sectional
championship just about an hour ago. Congratulations, girls. [Applause] 33 athletes competed at the state level and experienced success. Two individuals and one entire team took first in the state and several other individuals and teams achieved elite 8 status. In addition, the class of 2018 earned many academic honors. 14 students were named National Merit commended students and three were named National Merit finalists. We had 111 Illinois State scholars and 277 students achieved a GPA after seven semesters of 3.4 and above. 42 of those students earned a GPA of 4.4 or above on a 4.0 scale. Indeed, our students received so many academic awards that we dedicated an entire night to recognizing those students in May. Certainly, this is a class that has experienced great success. However, they also have experienced challenges. As Grant mentioned in his
speech, they lost three of their classmates. Losing even one student is not easy. Losing three is unthinkable. And I know many of the students in the class of 2018 continue to feel those losses. Still, this class has managed to overcome this challenge as well as their own individual challenges they faced and are ready for the next step in their journey. Class of 2018, as you leave Downer's Grove North, I hope you will take what you have learned here and make a positive difference in our world. And when I say what you have learned here, I do not mean just the skills of reading, writing, math, and the other skills that you were tested on while here at North. Of course, those are all important, but just as important are the lessons you learned about character.
Indeed, while I am very proud of your academic, athletic, and extracurricular successes, I am most proud of your efforts toward improving your character and toward coming together as one. The opening song, thankful, sung so beautifully by the AC cappella choir, states, "Even with our differences, there is a place we're all connected." And I believe this is very true for the class of 2018. Therefore, I urge you to find those connections in your new surroundings. Use the skills that you have learned here and find those connections in your new surroundings. Use the character that you have developed here at North to find each other's light and be the change that our world needs. I also urge you to take heed of the other message of the song. Be thankful. Often when we are caught up in
our challenges, it is difficult to remember all of the good things in our lives. Yet, gratitude is empowering. It strengthens us when we take the time to reflect on all that we should be thankful for. And it inspires others when we express our gratitude to them. As Melody Bey noted, gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. Class of 2018, I hope that as you look back on your years at North, you find many things to celebrate. And as you sit here today, no doubt a little anxious about the future, you also are filled with peace because of your accomplishments. Finally, I wish you the best as you venture out into the world, bringing your vision for tomorrow to life and looking for joy even when life
is challenging. I will miss you, but I know you are ready to leave and that you will make a positive impact on our world. Thank you for everything you have done to improve North High and congratulations. [Applause] And now, Dr. The members of the board of education, it is with great honor and pleasure that I present to you the North High School class of 2018. As principal, I certify that the graduating class of 2018 has met all of their requirements as set forth by the state of Illinois and the board of education of district 99 and are hereby granted all the rights and privileges that correspond accordingly. It is now my pleasure to introduce the superintendent of Community High School District 99, Dr. Hank Thely. Thank you, Principal Schwarz. I'd like to start out by
congratulating the class of 2018 on your accomplishments during your high school career, culminating in today's graduation celebration. This is always a big moment for each of you as students, but also for your parents, family members, teachers, and staff members who have helped you along the way. Before you start your next chapter, please take a moment to reflect, think about all of those people who helped you navigate those school years starting all the way back in kindergarten. Think of all those people who supported you, cared for you, took you the places you needed to be, and made it possible for you to be here today. And if you look around and spot some of those people in the crowd or staff members around, this is your chance to wave one last time and thank them. Go
on, wave. You can do it. Class of 2018, after having the guidance and support of these parents and caring adults and staff members shephering you forward through and through life's challenges, you're now entering a new phase where you begin to lead your own life. Today marks the turning point where you are now leading the way. As a parent of a graduating high school senior myself this year, I've lived through a similar year as you, preparing for change. It was a year filled with uncertainty, difficult choices, and lots of joy. And I'm sure you're starting to see through all of those experiences that being an adult can be hard. You have learned that things happen that you don't expect and things that you don't even imagine were possible sometimes occur. Some of these will be challenges.
Other times they will be opportunities. Either way, you are now responsible for getting through each of those situations. Sometimes it will take every bit of energy, knowledge, and determination that you have to make it through. But know this, you will make it through. I know you have already faced challenging situations in your life and in school this year and in school for the past four years. You will continue to overcome future experiences and roadblocks and explore opportunities by using what you have learned from these experiences and by relying on those around you. There are a lot of people in this world you have yet to meet. And I encourage you to continue to value positive relationships as others as one of your most precious resources. We are in a world that offers limitless opportunities to
expand ourselves and moving forward continue to grow by being open to others and by learning from their experiences and their perspectives. In the words of world traveler and author Gina Greenley, "Experience is a master teacher, even when it's not our own." The parents, family members, and teachers in your life trust and believe that they have prepared you for whatever comes next in your life. We are confident that you will join the ranks of successful graduates leaving Community High School District 99. And most of all, we trust that we have instilled in you the power and desire to learn, to reason, and to take positive actions for others throughout the rest of your life. In the future, please come back and share your successes with our students. Let us know how your high school experience prepared
you for the next set of adventures. I can't wait to hear about the positive differences you are making in the world. To Dr. Kupka and to the members of the board of education, it is my privilege to recommend the members of North High, class of 2018, for graduation from high school community district 99. It is now my pleasure to bring forth Dr. Nansky Kupka, president of the board of education, who will now represent the board in presenting the class to the community. Congratulations, graduates. Good evening and congratulations. I know for some of you this day could not come quickly enough. For others, especially us parents today, it is here way too soon. Today you're different. Today you're a high school graduate. Your teachers, administrators, and all the staff, your parents and families work very hard
to help you get to this point. and I'm sure you won't disappoint us going forward. Like Grant, like Principal Schwarz, I would like to take a moment to recognize both the students and family members who we wish who are here with us today, but who are not. Representing the board, we are proud to recognize the 2018 class. We offer our congratulations and wish you all the best in wherever life takes you. Now go out and do some good in the world. Thank you. Thank you, Dr. The Dr. Kovka. At this time, we will begin confirring the diplomas. I ask that our line leaders move into place and prepare the graduates. For those in the audience, I respectfully request that you remain in your seats and hold your applause and other acknowledgements until all students have
been awarded diplomas in order to provide the appropriate recognition that each of our students deserves. Just as you want to hear the name of your son or daughter read, so too will other parents and families. Any loud noise can drown out the reading of a student's name. Please do not be responsible for preventing a student's name from being heard. We thank you in advance for your appropriate and respectful behavior. Will the class of 2018 please come forward to receive your diplomas. Kaylee Aum.
