and and our students are incredible amazing human beings tonight we will partner as board members students parents administrators staff and community members to share and develop ideas about what we want our district to be when we share common Vision we can all move together in the same direction and accomplish great things again thank you for being here tonight and we're glad you're here so I'll now ask Dr katti to come to the microphone good evening everyone I'm echoing the comments of our board president I really want to thank everybody for coming out this evening um this is really a important stage in any kind of strategy development we've got to go know where we're going and what's more exciting than to have our students really take the leader leadership ship here and to think about
all the ways in which we want to realize where we want to go and all I ask is that we dream big and we lean into those truths and those authentic feelings and ideas that we have and we are here to listen and to engage so thank you okay all righty well thank you all for coming today how are you guys today good good awesome all right well my name is Luke Lockwood and I'm the student ambassador at iGo high school and I'm Isabelle gishan and I'm the student ambassador at ASO East we're so happy to have you all here for this um public forum and then is this the clicker here let's see there we go all right so first off we're just gonna uh collaborate within our tables we're going to be having
a lot of collaboration time through this event um so first off we want want to start before you guys collaborate uh discuss get to know each other we'll give you guys a couple minutes to introduce yourselves maybe what you do if you're an administrator in the district or a board member uh kind of what you do there and so yeah we'll turn it over to you guys for just a couple of minutes uh just for you guys to have some introduction time to get to know each other and we'll we'll come back here in a minute uh yeah if you want like just like five minutes or so and then I'll go through this one and then I'll go through values if you want to go through the values and that yeah can and then
I can do the belief and goal and then we'll watch the video yeah and then just more leader yeah yeah okay I have it done here too just sit at any table we'll give them to like we give them to like 75ish four more minutes okay okay's that one one one a lot should send someone over so I could go to that table and I can yeah I can float I would do Mr he's a board member okay yeah yeah okay go time. is I love time do is okay we'll give it like more seconds we'll go at 35 should we wait for them though come on okay yeah so then you'll [Music] go perfect perfect all right everybody hopefully within the next couple of seconds here we'll kind of turn it back to the
front as we keep on going with our Forum all right well we hope you guys all kind of get a brief understanding of each other and we'll we'll dive deeper into that in a couple minutes as we as we move on but just we wanted to go over a little bit today um about where our Focus lies for this forum with a little bit of structure here uh we're really going to be diving into um portraits of a learner portraits of an educator and portraits of a leader through this forum each table has um a different one of these uh portraits and you guys should know if you don't know someone will come around and help you out with that um but these are really the three um core values that we're going to be
digging into today today and uh if you see the QR code down in the corner if you want to take out your phones if you have them on you uh and you want to scan that QR code you're going to get a link uh where you can fill out one or two words about what each of those mean to you so a portrait of a learner portrait of an educator and portrait of a leader um you'll get a couple of minutes to just kind of go through there um and if anybody needs assistance we can come around and help you uh but once again with each one of those you're just going to put maybe one or two words on what that means to you and how you view that we'll give you a couple
of minutes to fill that form out [Music] there spe all right so now that you've gotten that set up we oh we got to click that where's the we just wanted to go over the sd308 values so the values that we have decided upon are humanization Integrity dignity courtesy collaboration and empathy and that is what we're trying to Center all decisionmaking on to focus the entire sd308 community and the value that this for is really going to be focused on is equity so we're trying to focus on including everyone especially our student voices and making it an equitable environment for all so that is the lens we kind of want to look at our work tonight with so a little bit about um the belief and the goal for uh today uh we believe that
the student is at the center of our work we are a school district after all and so the student really is the center of that and so you can kind of see on the little diagram up there um kind of the different levels um as it starts with so it starts with the self-portrait kind of yourself where you view yourself and kind of the goals as you go up through graduates systems and eventually you can get up to that educator um and a leader as you go on and that's kind of kind of the path that's followed within education but you can um also put that into perspective in any area of your life as well as you go on um kind of those different levels but these are just kind of the tiers that
we see it as where you might start as a student a portrait of a student a learner and as you go on into uh leadership roles and positions so if you just want to take a look at that right there all right so now we are going to be we'll turn it over there we're going to be showing you guys a quick video about a local school district in the area that um took some of these same values and same approaches with the portrait of a student or a learner sorry A Portrait of a learner a portrait of an educator and a portrait of a leader um and I believe uh we'll we'll look at this video and discuss here in a minute but why don't we watch this real quick students staff well represented
group of schools our what do our gr to have what to suful GRU having specific that's powerful we know that future Market is conly changing the rate of informationally increasing there's a lot of unud having able to I think most important competency to me being able to read write and listen really effectively is really important really pleasing to being able to achieve all the other competencies collaboration essential for us to live Harmon each other it's essential to be able to work productively and effectively with one another C important thing I think students are the most impressive we give them the opp we see that they will well what we expect it's important for student to be self-empowered because when you School you need to be ready to understand yourself what your goals are what you
might help and how to accom everything I think all important competencies but that up most me for many personal reasons is iners learn a lot each other in terms of the world and how it works and how important it is to communicate equally with people of different backrounds andile graduate process that ideas it was really impressive to see how people from all Community GP come together collaborate and do a consensus on what's important for all of our my vision for graduates is that they feel confident in their next steps whether that be more education or entering the workforce or whatever they choose and make posi contrib to their commun wow I'm so excited to work with the progressive board the staff and support Community as we launch trans our profile gives us a vision for
what each of our students need to be successful life and will all right so that came from the glenbard school district as you saw just kind of their graduate program and what they saw with uh different forums like this one um so we're kind of emulating that in a sense um but as we as we go on uh we just just really want to dive into uh the profile of a learner educator and leader and uh we want to build the districtwide mtss the multi-tiered systems of support and sip the school Improvement Day plans uh through this some of those uh key values that we're looking for with those three um that's that's really our goal through that and what what the community and what our students value through that as well and we're really
taking that into consideration so I see some pictures we'll we'll wait for you before we move on all right all right we'll turn it over to Isabelle about a portrait of the leader okay so we're going to start with portrait of a learner which each table is going to have a different portrait so we have portrait of a learner portrait of a leader and portrait of an educator so you can see what is on your table with all the little the like um on the paper it we'll say what it has but we're going to start with what a portrait of a learner should be so and then so this is kind of examples you also have the questions for each each one on your table so we're not going to read through all of
them just because it will differ from table to table but these are kind of examples of what we're looking for we want to think of qualities that we want to see within our Educators our Learners and our leaders and then again these are the questions we're kind of focusing on for our profile of an educator we just want to keep centered on these ideas and then just another example we can go back if you ever want us to go back we can go back and take a look at those examples and lastly our portrait of a leader which can really Encompass our entire community and even as you're looking at these one thing that even when I saw them earlier today thinking of it a learner can be anyone in a district an educator can
be anyone in the district and a leader can be anyone in District so you don't have to focus on what would I want a teacher to do what would I want a student to do I think it's good to have that in your mind but also think bigger scale what can we enable our students our teachers our community to do and then just one more example okay all right so now at this time it's we're going to turn it to you guys within your uh little groups here uh depending on your table uh you guys will be discussing the portraits of a learner uh educator and leader um and so those conversations can happen at each of your tables um if at any point you want us to go around and we can uh go
back to a slide uh that you want to see some more examp examples to bounce off some ideas you can go for that but at this time uh we have questions at each table we'll be bouncing around but the time is yours to kind of discuss and have those conversations and we'll be around Dr you oh yes yes yes um and each of you have um yeah the sheet that Dr Waller's holding up there yeah the ciry poies you guys can uh write all of your ideas on there all right right so happy discussing and if you need anything if you need us to go back to a slide we'll be happy to do that as well yes for sure e spe e for e than e for e spe e I hope your conversations
are going well just so you know we're going to be wrapping up in about a minute and then oh yeah yeah yeah no we're oh what do you what clap three times if you hear me there you go I I'm new at the call and response stuff I'm learning I'm learning um but we're going to be wrapping up our conversations here in the small groups in just about a minute so finish up anything there um and then uh we'll go in and uh kind of share as a full group kind of what we talked about at our table so if you want to pick a representative from your table or maybe a few people to kind of share that out you can do that now as well but finish up any last conversations and thoughts
and we'll get into that here in a minute be do you want to do a attention get her what's one you know I don't the problem is I don't know if everyone's going to know it so you're going to do a people are going to um call out at their tables we'll walk around with a mic and they'll we'll get what time supp what time is that all done I'm not sure okay I want to do I know them but I focus focus focus everybody Focus but I don't know if they're gonna you say everybody Focus all right you need to yell everybody focus when I say Hocus Pocus okay are you ready you're going to yell at those so I don't look D I got you focus everybody Focus I Hocus Pocus everybody Focus
oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah you got it do it again do it again come h Focus Pocus everybody Focus there we go there we go loud got it focus and the mic God I got overshadowed by the class I know we're still working on those attention getters all don't worry don't worry we'll get there next forum next forum they're going to be stronger than ever all right so we're gonna just kind of start with each portrait um and so and uh we'll start with uh portrait of a learner so where are my tables that did portraits of a learner one back there all right so what okay so we'll um go over somebody's from those tables stand up and we can kind of bounce ideas going off of there kind of what you shared
at the tables we'll start over here and if you guys have anything to add you can as well so just anything that you guys kind of talked about through there oh great skills now all right guys my name is Gabriel Lopez I'm a senior out of suis and our portrait what's your name my name is Gabriel Lopez I'm a senior atais and and we did portrait of a learner so one of the things we discussed or here here let me just list it out what we said so we said as portrait of learner they need to have strong work ethic uh listening skills um be able to collaborate well and then use technology appropriately and limit social media and then continu with learning growth and change um basically we just the overall of our discussion
was just how do we you know as Learners how do we just improve ourselves and how do we also just understand you know how do you collaborate with others how do you agree to disagree how to do all these things in a learning environment without you know causing you know a fuss or anything like that and it's just where does that where does this stuff happen where does this learning happen where does this growth mindset happen is it you know at what age does this happen at and we just said that you know I think the biggest thing that you know we took out of this is that students needs to learn how to listen and they need to also have a good work ethic because those two things if you put them together you're
going to have a great student already so that's overall what I feel like what we said and [Applause] yeah okay hi I'm Hannah Gro I'm a I go to oie um uh we talked a lot of the same things that they talked about in their group with like important skills and like we also talked about a lot um like career-wise and like what what is important for like after high school and things that like we should be taking account of in in in education um we also talked about how to like keep students motivated and passionate like in courses and how different ways we can improve like um like uh like connections between content like a specific thing we talked about was like we could combine like a chemistry and culinary class to keep like
students who are more interested in culinary like on board for like learning about chemistry and important things like that all right is there anything else from the portrait yeah Dr Paul for sure yes awesome we'll get the mic over to you all right so we identified several uh things that we would like to highlight trustworthiness um seeking to understand tenacity anything you would add we also said overcoming barriers acceptance conflict managing conflict self-management advocacy adaptability anything and empathy and that is it you go all right so that's kind of the portrait of a learner um and once again a learner can be anywhere from a student like that we have today um or you're I like to say lifelong Learners which is very true you're always learning at every stage of your life whether you're
a leader and educator or in school now so those are kind of some of the things that were talked about thank you guys from the portraits of a learner um now we'll move on to our tables that were um focused on the portrait of an an educator so where were those tables at I know we got one over here one over here we'll start over here and we'll work our way around all right so I'm lyanna and so we did the three e for the educator which are engaged enlightened and education so we think that if students are engaged it might also help um bring people to Enlighten and like understand more of like uh whatever they're learning and then that brings in education for them and that's like our three main points for being
an educ Ator you want to complete those three things for each and every student and then we also had um classroom has to fit all narratives so as a teacher you got to work with them and adapt and reassess every time you have discussions with different students and see how your education and your teaching um fits their narrative thank you right and now we're this table over here over there okay hello I'm meline Hayes and I'm an eighth grader at plank Junior High um so some of the things that we wrote down for a portrait of an educator is that they have dedication and commitment to their job um something else I wrote down just on my own was like they can control the behaviors of the students and they like can like control classroom
behaviors because like that's a big thing especially for like some like schools because Behavior can really disrupt the learning of other students um they want to make sure that their students like Thrive and they're not like trying to like ruin them I guess or like they just want to make sure that their students like learn um they are able to change their teaching to like help the students and they're not trying to like you know fail them um they are aware of the needs of their students they connect like their teaching ideas to like the real world so we at least get like something out of it so we know like how that would apply to us in the real world um allow the students to be like social and interact with each other and
like collaborate um they're empathetic towards what the students need um they uh add more collaboration opportunities um and um a teacher okay I just repeat all the same things thank you [Applause] did we have any other tables for a portrait of an educator I'm not sure no okay all right so once again thank you guys for sharing your thoughts on that I know I was able to sit in on one of those tables and um there were there were some really great discussions going on uh just like being a learner with an educator you can always be educating and uh teaching others um no matter what stage as well so I remember in our table we had kind of talked about how all three have different individual aspects but how they all three do come
together at some point um so kind of making those connections as well you might see some overlap in there and that's that's kind of the point there how all three of those no matter where you're at come into play can come into play in your life and others so thank you guys for the portraits of an educator um and now we'll go on to our final um focus which is Portrait of a leader um so where are my tables at for that one we'll start down here kind of work our way back what were your thoughts I'm Grace Gordon I'm a sophomore out of swo East High School and our table just discussed like a leader really should be constantly growing seeing as how the times are changing so the people who are leading us
need to change with them and we also said that a leader should be approachable they should be willing to hear other people and make people feel heard even if they're not going to follow what they're saying exactly and along with that just being open-minded and being able to respond to criticisms and things like that and we also think a leader should be able to hold themselves accountable and kind of like a practice what you preach so if you have values that you're trying to implement into the community you lead you should have those values for yourself as well all right we're back there all right hi everyone my name is Andrew madano I'm a sophomore at asle East High School um and what we discussed is the first thing that we discussed is a leader
kind of like what Grace said should be um adaptable and agile because um the the situations that we're going to have to be leading in those are constantly changing right the situations that we're going to be in and we're going to have to step up and being leader that's not going to be the same a week a month a year from now right so what's important is that a leader has the ability uh to change the way they communicate change the way they lead change how they respond to different situations um and Mr gate will mentioned a a Bruce Lee quote that I think is Pretty Tough like sser pretty well um says Be Like Water making its way through the cracks do not be assertive but adjust to the object and you shall find
a way around or through it if nothing within you stays rigid our things will disclose themselves so that's an we thought adaptability was important we also thought approachability was very important as well and we kind of talked about the specific actions that build that sense of approachability um the first thing is presence when you see school administrators even just your teachers walking through the hallway it builds that sense of familiarity um and even more than that when you have administrators like just miss Bowski as an example right when you see her you know saying hello in the hallways saying good morning with a smile um whenever you in that situation you got to visit her go to office or something it's not as intimidating because you see those leaders are present you see that um
they're friendly and that they they value you on a personal level um and we also thought that students could be leaders too um just by really breaking down barriers not uh categorizing people in a specific uh group but just being open and accepting and treating people right yeah that's everything oh yeah one more thing I'd like to add I already like I know I know I was like already been yapping for a little bit um but we think it's important to be a servant leader right I I think this applies to us students you know if you get an executive position but it really applies to anything it's very easy for you to use your um position of power influence just to benefit yourself only be thinking about yourself but the good leaders they think
about other people and they use their leadership position to serve other people people they use this no new um position uh new influence that they have to help people even more than they could before and yeah well thank you guys for those um just like all oh we had one more a you okay uh well just like all three of those um whether you are in a leadership position whether you're an educator whether you're a learner all three of those um you can be and um whether you are whatever position you're in you can be a leader and uh lead a team lead whatever lead a group um and you can also be a lifelong learner and a lifelong educator as well and using all three of those is really important and especially as we
go along with school so thank you all for sharing your ideas I hope there was some good overlap in there and we we got our brains moving and flowing tonight so awesome and Dr Waller would just like to share a couple final thoughts such a surprise um thank you all so much for being here um I want to make sure that I think um the the individuals in this space they're all scattered through whether it's a student or a leader um or support just a lot of great thoughts and intention into tonight and I really also want to thank Dr Paul Miss cellario they came together and created the the presentation and put together the different questions for all of you um if you don't mind we would really like to um collect those curvy
bodies from you yes we would we would like to get your thoughts and ideas and so um as you all are doing that I would like to actually call Dr Paul up here because she's going to just share a couple of different things so we can add context to the the reason as to why we're doing this work um and then they'll share the minty all right thank you everyone for coming this evening it's so helpful to hear um your perspectives as students parents and leaders as we continue to build out what our profile of a leader an educator and a student is this is helping inform our work within our district to continue to look for individuals who can cultivate these skills in our students and you can see behind me this is initially
before we even engaged in the work these are some things that have risen to the top the words that are larger are actually the ones that were repeated over and over again and the things that we're looking for um in regards to learning for kids and we're looking for experiences for students that are relevant and engaging challenging differentiated fun Innovative and this is so powerful for us as uh leaders in the district to hear from you and engage in this work together so thank you so much for coming this evening Dr katti would you like to close us out with any final remarks as we end our time together no I mean I I would say the only thing that I don't know about you by sitting at your table um not only did I
feel like the future is bright I felt like the future is now anybody else agree with me the future is now and the work we're doing was just so inspiring for me so kudos to the organizing team uh uh uh let's give them a huge round of applause um just this is not again the future is now because those efforts to get us to today is what made it happen so thank you secondly to the Board of Education your leadership in prioritizing student voice brings those who need to represent those values to the table and if if it wasn't for that I know this is the third this counts as the third public form with student voice centered is that correct second so I just think that's important not all Boards of Education very few
Boards of Education are doing this so I'm not just paying lip service I'm just stating a fact when we were at the I iasb conference this past year it was said very few boards and the reason why we have why am I doing this because I'm excited so I'm excited excited and I really appreciate everybody coming out this evening um we've got work to do and this is how it starts with a Clear Vision together Madam president you okay so we got a couple more things we need to do so public comment so on behalf of the Board of Education I would like to thank you all for coming out and attending tonight's meeting we value the feedback we receive from our members of the public and encourage everyone to take an active interest in
